EDITORIAL Velkommen til Hotel Magazine nr. 30.

Welcome to Hotel Magazine No 30.

Spotlighting Danish design, art and culture, Hotel Magazine once again hits the nightstands with a guide to Danish attractions.

Danish fashion and jewellery makes its mark both nationally and internationally. In this edition of Hotel Magazine we present a collection of Denmark’s top brands, including DAY, Shamballa and Georg Jensen.

Med venlig hilsen Tony Bak Vice President Operations Region South First Hotels

- MORE THAN JUST A HOTEL CHAIN

Unique hotels, central locations – and a dedication to giving you a good night’s sleep. First Hotels in Denmark, Norway and Sweden have made a true impact on the market. The collection has grown since its humble beginnings in 1993 and is today one of Denmark’s largest.

HOTEL MAGAZINE NO. 30

At First Hotels attention has been paid to every detail, from décor and cuisine to front desk service. And the hotels seek to offer a welcoming, home-away-from-home atmosphere. First Hotels is represented in the largest Danish cities and each member hotel has been carefully selected for its style, atmosphere and design. Indeed, the collection takes great pride in featuring the most unique establishments, all of which live up to the corporate motto: Your Second Home is First. You’ll be pampered during a stay at First Hotels. The hotels are centrally located, offering the opportunity to experience the local culinary scene as well as exclusive shopping. And First Hotels will also tailor your stay to perfectly meet your needs and requirements.

Your Second Home is First. For man bliver forkælet under et besøg hos First Hotels.

43

HOTEL MAGAZINE NO. 30

EN HOTELKÆDE MED VOKSEVÆRK First Hotels startede i 1993 i Sverige.

44

RAPID EXPANSION

First Hotels was founded in 1993 in Sweden. From the very beginning the collection set out to provide quality guest experiences and the mission has most definitely been accomplished. The hotel collection has grown from just six hotels in 1993 to include 59 hotels across 47 destinations in Denmark, Norway and Sweden. Hotel guests enjoy the opportunity to join the First Hotels fidelity program and become a First Member. Members earn one bonus point for every Swedish, Danish or Norwegian crown they spend at the hotel. Once you have become a First Member, you will enjoy a wealth of benefits and special deals. If you stay at First Hotels more than 10 times you are eligible for a bonus “Local Experience”, which can include exclusive gifts or experiences at the hotel.

HOTEL MAGAZINE NO. 30

HOTELKÆDE MED FOKUS PÅ OMSORG

THE CARING HOTEL COLLECTION

First Hotels’ krav til kvalitet rækker ud over gæstens oplevelser.

Showing care and consideration is also true of First Hotels’ involvement in Tanzania. The hotel collection has for the past ten years funded a development project where street children are given a new start. Over 250 children live at a foster home that First Hotels has helped to build, an initiative that makes a big difference and offers the opportunity for the children to enjoy a better life.

Quality at First Hotels goes far beyond guest experience. First Hotels is all about joy, care and innovation – a value set that applies as much to the welfare and wellbeing of its employees as the satisfaction of its guests, providing the best of quality experiences every time you stay with First Hotels.

45

HOTEL MAGAZINE NO. 30

46

THE PLACE TO STAY

First Hotels reaches out to the wider world, providing a good night’s sleep for individual guests and, more importantly, caring for others, too. Reflecting the First Hotels value set, guests will enjoy sublime hospitality where everything converges to offer a first-class stay. First Hotels is the place for those looking to experience the larger Danish cities in just the right way.

HOTEL MAGAZINE NO. 30

FIRST – ALTID I BEVÆGELSE First Hotels har ikke kun blik for beliggenheden, men sørger også hele tiden for, at hotellerne i kæden fremstår inspirerende og opdateret.

FIRST – ALWAYS IN MOTION

First Hotels not only has an eye for location, the chain also ensures that its hotels are inspiring and contemporary experiences. This is more than evident at the prized and popular First Hotel Mayfair in central Copenhagen, which has now been merged with the adjacent First Hotel Excelsior under the unifying name First Hotel Mayfair. The refurbishment will be finally completed early this summer but you can already book stays at the hotel. With respect for the historical and original style of the building, the now 203 rooms have been meticulously updated to offer the tranquillity and comfort for which First Hotel Mayfair is renowned. In a beautiful and elegant way, the rooms at First Hotel Excelsior have been integrated into the overall style of First Hotel Mayfair to offer the same unique charm and intimacy that define this Vesterbro neighbourhood hotel. Besides the extensive renovation, the hotel now also offers a new and exciting street-level partnership. First Hotels proudly presents Denmark’s first Boston Grill restaurant. Here locals and tourists alike are tempted by an exquisite menu that includes clam chowder and côte de boeuf accompanied by organic vegetables and much more. With its prime location in central Copenhagen, First Hotel Mayfair has indeed become an even more attractive choice for travellers, including families, looking for the perfect weekend getaway.

First Hotels er glade for at kunne præsentere Danmarks første Boston Grill restaurant.

LOUISIANA MUSEUM OF MODERN ART Louisiana Museum of Modern Art is situated in Denmark on the North Zealand coast in a spacious, old park with a fine view across the sound of Sweden. It houses an exquisite collection of modern and contemporary art by international artists and is continually expanded. For this reason, besides individual features that are almost always on view – such as the Giacometti Gallery, the Kusama Installation, and the Powerless Structure by Elmgreen and Dragset in the Panorama Room - the bulk of the collection is shown in selected, curated presentations.

Louisiana Museum of Modern Art Gammel Strandvej 13 DK-3050 Humlebæk Tel: +45 4919 0719 www.louisiana.dk

Every year, the Louisiana Museum shows approx 8 major exhibitions of modern and contemporary art, including classical masters of modern art as well as new and upcoming international artists. Louisiana is not merely an experience in modern and contemporary art, but a congenial reflection of the interplay between art, architecture and landscape.

64

The park serves as an ideal setting for displaying the museum’s collection of modern sculptures. Similarly the prominent museum buildings, constructed between 1958 and 1998, offer a fascinating background for the permanent collection of twentieth century art.

NY CARLSBERG GLYPTOTEK The Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek presents the largest collection of ancient art, French art and Danish Golden Age art in a frame where even the architecture and the interior is unparalleled in Denmark. The man behind the Glyptotek, Carlsberg breweries’ own Carl Jacobsen, was one of the1800’s big tycoons and patrons of the arts. He created one of his era’s greatest private art collections. The brewer was a passionate collector and nearly squandered his entire fortune to create the exceptional collection of art and artifacts.

THORVALDSENS MUSEUM Thorvaldsen’s Museum is built as a framework for a single artist’s oeuvre, the Danish sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen (1770-1844). Thorvaldsen lived more than 40 years in Rome, where he became one of the most celebrated artists. In 1838, he bequeathed both his work and his art collections to his home city Copenhagen that dedicated an entire museum building to his work. Thorvaldsen Museum opened in 1848 and it was the country’s first public museum. The museum’s architecture and the exhibited sculptures play beautifully together, and the colorful and richly decorated rooms are a very special experience. The museum consists of 900 of Thorvaldsen’s own works - sculptures and reliefs in plaster and marble and designed and modeled sketches for sculptures. Most images are taken from Greek and Roman mythology - but there are also a large number of portrait busts and sculptures of European civilians, ecclesiastical and royalty, all ordered their portrait by the famous sculptor. The museum also holds Thorvaldsen’s collection of Danish and European paintings and his antique collection with marble sculptures, vases, coins and more from Egypt, Greece and Italy.

Tea was one of the most important products traded at the end of the 18th century and many merchants established and obtained their goods from docking ships at Christianshavn in Copenhagen. Among these merchants was Niels Brock Perch the founder of A.C. Perch´s Tea Shop. The idea was to sell the best teas from all over the world and today this is still our most important task. Seven generations of tea merchants have owned the family business and the historical tea shop hasn´t changed much in 180 years. Today you can choose between 175 different kinds of tea in the shop and the Tearoom offers you the traditional afternoon tea with delicious scones, petit four cakes and small finger sandwiches. ARKEN Kun 20 kilometer syd for København ligger ARKEN Museum for Moderne Kunst.

ARKEN Only 20 kilometres south of Copenhagen lies ARKEN, Denmark’s newest museum of modern art. Søren Robert Lund is the architect behind the distinctive building, which has risen on the water’s edge in Køge Bugt Beach Park since the opening in 1996. As suggested by the name, the building was designed as a metaphor for a ship, and the maritime architecture and the museum identity revolve around the location. In 2015 the sea is set to move closer to the museum when the surrounding nature is landscaped to create an ”Island of Art” encompassed by water. ARKEN offers world-class art. Each year the museum puts on 7 or 8 different exhibitions of modern Danish, Nordic and international art. The collection mainly consists of contemporary art. ARKEN also houses one of Europe’s most important collections from the renowned British artist Damien Hirst as well as a spectacular work by Chinese artist Wi Weiwei.

The exhibition gives visitors a chronological overview of Danish painting by artist like C. W. Eckersberg, Christen Købke, Anna Ancher and Johannes Larsen. In the museum’s beautifully decorated rooms you can explore the Danish Golden Age and enjoy Eckersberg’s studies in model painting and his fascination of the antique or get a sense of romanticism by admiring the ideals in landscape paintingsby J. Th. Lundbye.

THE ROYAL DANISH THEATRE The Royal Danish Theatre has since 1748 been located by one of Copenhagen’s main squares, Kongens Nytorv. Over the years, many famous people have visited the theatre, including Danish philosopher Søren Kierkegaard, who saw a performance of Mozart’s Don Giovanni.

The Royal Danish Ballet is one of the world’s most renowned companies and the caretaker of a unique Bournonville tradition, which is characterised by refined mimetic narrative and effortless ease. The Bournonville legacy is the backbone of the Royal Danish Ballet’s repertoire. Nonetheless, the company also has an eye for contemporary choreography and features a wide and varied repertoire of high artistic merit.

THE OPERA HOUSE The Royal Danish Opera is Scandinavia’s leading opera company with a long tradition and history. In 2005, the Royal Danish Opera inaugurated its new waterside Opera House in Copenhagen, which has given the company a fitting new venue in which to develop its great artistic potential.

MOSEDE FORT What happens in a neutral state during a world war? During WW1, Denmark was caught between its powerful neighbor to the south, Germany, and its biggest trading partner, Great Britain. Balancing war trade, humanitarian efforts, diplomacy and military precautions, Denmark walked a tightrope between the two. To keep the balance, the state also had to bridge growing social divisions created by war trade and war costs. From this, the Danish welfare state model was born in. Through immersive and interactive installations, photos and objects, you can experience this dramatic story at the coastal fort, Mosede.

KOLDINGHUS Midt i Kolding ligger Koldinghus.

KOLDINGHUS Above the centre of Kolding stands the castle of Koldinghus. It was on this site in 1268 that the Danish King built a fortress for the purpose of guarding the border between the Kingdom of Denmark and the Duchy of Schleswig. The earliest parts still standing date from the 15th century. Excellent temporary exhibitions, and impressive silver collections of faience ware and war memorabilia. THE MAGAZINE NO. 30

An extraordinary pavé of 529 scintillating diamonds in twenty different sizes embellish- es the golden elephant pendant. Dangling playfully from vintagecoloured silk strings, the treasured trumpeter fits the bill of uncontrived luxury and bohemian elegance. Much like its creator, fine jewellery designer Ole Lynggaard. Earlier this year the founder of Danish luxury brand, OLE LYNGGAARD COPENHAGEN, celebrated his 80th birthday, and the exquisite pendant was designed to mark the anniversary. The master is by no means ready to retire and still works actively designing bestselling collections. After almost sixty years in the fine jewellery industry, Ole Lynggaard feels as passion- ate as ever about his craft. Indeed, craftsmanship is a key operative word in Scandinavia’s largest fine jewellery workshop. “We take great pride in being meticulous craftsmen. Our credibility as a brand and the loyalty of our customers rely on excellence. We refuse to compromise on quality and design – and are always eager to exceed in both areas. The design appeals to the senses and makes a woman cherish a piece of jewellery. The quality is what enables her to wear it very often or every day – and even to pass it on to the next generation,” explains Mr Lynggaard.

NOTHING LEFT TO CHANCE

OLE LYNGGAARD COPENHAGEN has grown considerably since its founding days in 1963. Today, Charlotte Lynggaard, daughter of the eponymous founder, is leading fine jewellery designer and company creative director. His son, Søren Lynggaard, is company CEO, and the sibling’s two spouses, Hanna Lynggaard and Michel Normann, have also added their professional talents to the family business as Retail Manager and CCO, respectively. Over the past decade, the company has spread its wings, soaring from the position of well-established Scandinavian success to luxury brand of significant international recognition. Dedicated to positioning OLE LYNGGAARD COPENHAGEN in the luxury goods big league, the Lynggaard family has redefined the corporation’s strategic development. Today all commercial activities pivot on the vision to be the Scandinavian luxury brand globally preferred by quality-conscious women with a selective taste of jewellery. OLE LYNGGAARD COPENHAGEN is purveyor to the Royal Danish Court, and retail- ers are carefully selected among the most luxurious jewellery stores in the world, some of who are brands on their own merits. In 2015, international retailers represented brand devotees purchasing 67 million Euros worth of fine jewellery.

I 2015 repræsenterede forhandlerne internationale brandtilhængeres smykkeindkøb for 500 millioner kroner.

AN ALLURING BRAND UNIVERSE

With a rare eye for artistic details, fine jewellery designer and company creative director, Charlotte Lynggaard, creates an aesthetically enticing milieu and a brand ex- perience that surpasses mere spectacular products. The 2016 magical circus campaign unfolds in a seductive atmosphere of uncontrived luxury making the collections stand out as truly unique. The campaign amply brings out the brand’s abiding passion for impeccable craftsmanship, intricate design, and laid-back bohemian styling. Alluring interior decoration of more than 300 retail venues and soon to be five flag- ship stores combines the oriental mysteries of The Far East with the clean lines of the far North. Every flagship store is the result of hundreds of aesthetic considerations, skilfully juggled by Charlotte Lynggaard and her team into a seemingly effortless ex- pression of welcoming luxury. Pleasantly present, staff members are keen to treat store visitors to individual styling sessions. Whether pre-booked or visiting on a whim guests are invited to relax in this cosmopolitan oasis and will learn how to style jewellery across collections for a look of free-spirited elegance. This year’s opening of a flagship store in Paris brings the scintillating universe even closer to brand devotees in central Europe. More flagship stores are to open in the near future, London currently in the planning phase, followed by other major European cities in the primary growth markets, German-speaking Europe and Benelux. Company founder Ole Lynggaard is only too happy to see his life’s work thrive. – Turning 80 is a festive occasion, but nevertheless, this is just another birthday for me. There is always work to be done and a world to be experienced. My creative curiosity is perfectly intact – and as craftsman and designer I feel as strong as an elephant, concludes the golden master and puts away the luxurious anniversary pendant before it is time to return to the drawing board. www.olelynggaard.com

THE NEW CLASSIC 156

THE MAGAZINE NO. 30

Adding a whole new chapter to Danish modernism, the husband-and-wife team behind Erik Bagger Furniture has set out to redefine the essence of comfort.

There is no beating about the bush when Erik Bagger talks of his new venture, Erik Bagger Furniture: “In two years time we’ll be one of the most respected furniture firms in Denmark and in five years time, we’ll be one of the leading quality furniture brands.” But Erik Bagger (born 1949) is no newcomer to the Danish design market. Originally trained as a goldsmith, Erik Bagger has gained an international reputation for his glassware, including such iconic designs as Grand Cru, Opera and Rosendahl, which are featured at leading design stores worldwide including the MoMA Store in New York. After designing glassware for 20 years, Erik met his wife Caroline, who applied for a job vacancy at his design office in Copenhagen. “I’ve never really had the luck to find a designer who suited my temperament and work style, but then Caroline showed up and she shared the same vision,” Erik Bagger says with a smile. Their meeting resulted in Erik Bagger dusting off his old sketches and unrealised projects. With Erik Bagger Furniture the couple have launched a range of product lines comprising 62 individual designs to date. Caroline Bagger brings to the venture a unique sense of detail and not least an appreciation of ergonomics, whereas Erik Bagger draws not only on his accomplished sense of style but also his extensive technical prowess and business acumen. Together they set out to redefine the sense of comfort offered by contemporary furniture for the home and office.

Hans ikoniske glasbrugskunst, bl.a. Grand Cru, Opera og Rosendahl, sælges i førende internationale designbutikker herunder MoMA Store i New York.

157

THE MAGAZINE NO. 30

For at imødekomme parrets designfilosofi anvendes eksempelvis en særlig metode, hvorved bordben monteres under bordpladen uden, at synlige skruer forstyrrer helheden.

158

A CALL FOR COMFORT

Caroline and Erik Bagger are very inspired by Scandinavian simplicity with its traditions for harmony and sinuous shapes. “In my world, the back of a chair needs to be as beautiful as the front,” Erik Bagger says. To meet this design philosophy, the collections apply a special method whereby, for instance, the legs of a table are mounted under the tabletop with no visible screws to interfere with the clean-lined design. The couple have a hard time picking out their favourite design but believe their City Chair is especially unique. “I have never seen a chair like this one before,” Caroline Bagger says. “Actually, this chair cannot be compared with anything. It has a whole new functionality, a whole new shape and it’s really comfortable to sit in,” Erik Bagger adds.

THE MAGAZINE NO. 30

forbrugeren er konge

THE CONSUMER IS KING

A seasoned businessperson, Erik Bagger also knows that no matter how well established you are on the design market you can never take your success for granted. “I have the privilege of not needing to imitate others,” he says with a gentle twinkle in his eye. “I can design all the time; I have many boxes filled with sketches. Many designers think they are a divine gift to humanity, but they are mistaken. You need to be there for people. Designing is easy but you haven’t succeeded until you can offer your designs at affordable prices and get them to the market. It’s not until the consumers have bought your designs that you have won,” he concludes. With their value-for-money approach and appreciation of unique comfort and style, Erik Bagger Furniture just may become a new worldwide household name.

ABOUT VINTAGE A CLASSIC DANISH ADVENTURE Scandinavian minimalism and excellence in quality and detail are the essence of the highly popular wristwatches from About Vintage. Since the launch of the Danish watch brand in 2015 they have not only taken Denmark by storm but also conquered the international market. Creators of the popular watch brand are childhood friends, Sebastian Skov and Thomas Andersen. Driving the brand is their great passion for wristwatches and classic design as well as their desire to fashion finely crafted timepieces. Their vision of creating an affordable dream watch – or a standin for the watch you keep in your safety box – has been very successfully achieved. Rather than limiting themselves to selling a pre-conceived story, About Vintage seeks to design watches where the user creates the narrative. Their shooting-star success can be attributed to their passionate approach to design and not least the thorough process of sourcing the perfect materials. Sebastian Skov and Thomas Andersen are uncompromising in their endeavor and will introduce their first collection of mechanical wristwatches this autumn. About Vintage will open their first flagship store on 1 June, which in fine tune with the design of their watches and their penchant for history will be located on Frederiksberg Allé in Copenhagen – one of Denmark’s most classic avenues.

About Vintage åbner 1.

Global knives have become such a popular classic precisely because of the designer’s emphasis on functionality, ergonomics and precision. Created with an unyielding dedication to craftsmanship and design, Global knives fully reflect Rosendahl Design Group’s vision and values. That is exactly why Global and Rosendahl Design Group have worked closely together since 1991. Enjoying great success, Rosendahl Design Group is today the official agent of Global in Denmark, Norway, Finland, Greenland, Iceland and the Faroe Islands.

UNCUT CHIC Maya Bjørnsten, owner of Roughdiamonds.dk in Denmark, admits that before she came across her company’s namesake gemstone, her talent as a jewellery designer had lain largely dormant. It was a chance encounter – a look through some of her husband’s photographs of uncut natural diamonds taken in Antwerp, the capital of the world’s diamond trade – that sparked what would become a deep passion. Maya immediately tried to source a piece of jewellery made from rough diamonds, and discovered that there were precious few available. So she set about making her own. “There are few people in the world with access to rough diamonds. My clients benefit from the fact that I’m one of them and can acquire diamonds of different shapes and characteristics,” says Maya. “Every stone is unique,” she continues. “And in their uncut, unpolished state they exhibit a raw beauty. They are as Mother Nature created them.” Maya handpicks every one of the diamonds she uses – all of which are of gem quality, which makes up only 20 percent of the diamonds in trade. She then considers the design, sometimes over a matter of months. “The diamond itself is my inspiration,” she explains. “The design has to showcase its beauty. When you cut and polish stone, you take away its unique story. Even its colour tells a tale – green, yellow and the rarer pink and blue stones are all created depending on the elements that were present when the stone came into being.” Uniqueness is key to each of Maya’s pieces. She carefully designs the housing for every one of her rings, pendants, necklaces, bracelets or cufflinks using white gold or yellow gold. “I go by their natural form,” she says. “These stones speak to you, and I can see that with my clients. They pick up a particular ring and say ‘this is the one’.” Once Maya has completed her design, diamond setters and goldsmiths set about making it real. And the designer insists on only working with highly experienced artisans. “It’s understated luxury that I’m selling,” she says. “Many of my clients haven’t been able to find a piece of jewellery that they can identify with elsewhere, while others are tired of bling and looking for something more authentic.” Maya Bjørnsten’s new Bredgade store may be a bit of a challenge to find, but after turning heads with an exhibition at the royal Amalienborg Palace, Maya Bjørnsten’s unique collection has found a home befitting the natural beauty of rough diamonds. “Along the journey, we picked up admirers while displaying in Paris, as well as in Dover Street Market in London, Tokyo and New York. Come in and see Mother Nature’s handiwork at its finest – lovingly set in the finest gold with restraint to ensure that the rough diamond’s beauty always steals the show,” she concludes. Love it like it is. RoughDiamonds.dk Fine Jewellery by Maya Bjørnsten Bredgade 56 1260 Copenhagen

THE MAGAZINE NO. 30

Danish design company Georg Jensen is renowned for its artistic boldness, superior craftsmanship and collaborations with some of the leading designers of the past century and today. THE GEORG

Citing Copenhagen as a centre for culinary innovation, Chef Talib Hudda, formerly of Michelin-starred Marchal at the Hotel d’Angleterre in Copenhagen, has been enlisted to oversee the kitchens for each venue. The Georg will boast a Nordic interpretation of modern international cuisine with a focus on local seasonal ingredients and simple flavour combinations. The ground-floor dining spaces are designed by Space Copenhagen, a firm best known for the interiors of Copenhagen’s famed restaurant Noma. Space Copenhagen has a long-standing relationship with Georg Jensen, having designed several of the company’s stores as well as the Liquid hollowware collection. Their custom-designed furniture for the Georg Jensen Hus dining spaces offer an emphasis on natural materials – rich woods, metals and leather. “There is something wonderful about the way the classic Asian design meets Scandinavian design,” explained Peter Bundgaard, partner at Space Copenhagen. “We tried to use the heritage of what we have, and imbed symbols that reference Asian design – a Scandinavian filtering of something Chinese.”

DESIGN HIVE

The top-floor design galleries are dedicated to showcasing the best of the Georg Jensen jewellery, living and sterling silver collections. Representing various periods of the company’s rich history, from Art Nouveau and Art Deco to the present day, the carefully curated selection is a visual testament to the company’s dedication to innovation and mirrors the timelessness of Danish design. The company’s most recent collaboration, a silver tea service designed by Marc Newson, has made its debut in the hollowware gallery. Newson’s tea service was created specifically for the debut of Georg Jensen Hus and is available in a limited edition of 10 sets. The tea service shares the space with over 100 objects from the company’s existing hollowware offerings, a curated collection from some of the world’s most creative minds. “Jensen is evolving,” said Georg Jensen CEO David Chu, summing up his vision. “We’re taking the design language, the classical roots, and moving it into a modern era.”

Peder Serverin Krøyer (1851-1909), Boys Bathing at Skagen. Summer Evening, 1899.

188

The famous Skagen painters settled on the northernmost tip of Denmark to paint in the distinctive light of that region – and Danish artist P.S. Krøyer was the most highly acclaimed of them all. This work, showing a typical brightly lit summer night in Skagen, shows how Krøyer was able to create a vibrant composition with very few, simple devices, perfectly capturing the ease and lightness of summer living. The diagonal movement from the ships towards the children in the foreground, lit up by white moonlight, is a simple, yet highly effective composition that simultaneously evokes a sense of depth and intimacy.

Peter Christian Skovgaard (1817-75): A Beech Wood in May near Iselingen Manor, Zealand, 1857

P.C. Skovgaard was inspired by a general trend in nineteenth century art: paintings were expected to nurture patriotic pride, conveying a new sense of national self-awareness that celebrated the Danish countryside. Quite in keeping with the Danish national anthem and its homage to the beeches of Denmark, P.C. Skovgaard’s favourite subject was sunlit Danish beech forests; he regarded such woods as a national symbol of Denmark. However, the inclusion of the children in the foreground and their family in the background means that this idyllic scene is also about more intimate matters – about the family life of the patron who commissioned the painting.

Harald Giersing (1881-1927), The Judgment of Paris, 1909.

190

Thick, black contours, a pared-back palette and a certain coarseness of expression. Harald Giersing was one of the greatest artists of the young generation of modernists from the early twentieth century who wanted to break away from the prevailing naturalist norms of the time. The title of this work is a reference to the Greek myth of how prince Paris was asked to judge a beauty contest between the three goddesses Hera, Athena and Aphrodite. In Giersing’s modernist version, the scene takes place in a studio with the artist surrounded by nude models.

Jens Ferdinand Willumsen (1863-1958), A Mountaineer, 1912

Here we see a modern, strong and majestic woman in a monumental mountainous landscape. J.F. Willumsen’s vitalistic work is an homage to his wife Edith and a depiction of humanity’s conquest and communion with nature. The intense, contrasting colours are a signature trait of Willumsen’s highly evocative works and are part of what makes him such a unique figure in Danish art history. His works often address universal themes and the human condition; this work is inspired by the German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche.

Asger Jorn (1914-73), The Wheel of Life. January Picture of the Seasons Cycle, 1953.

192

Asger Jorn was a co-founder and member of the international avant-garde movement ”COBRA”, which pushed back the boundaries of what art could be with its abstract expressionism. This painting is a modern interpretation of “the wheel of life” motif, a popular medieval theme found in murals in many Danish churches. A traditional wheel of life depicts the stages of life from birth to death in a cyclical movement. Jorn’s abstract version of the theme contains a wealth of colour, and according to the artist himself it demonstrates how his art also concerns itself with every facet of a human life.

THE MAGAZINE NO. 30

Vilhelm Hammershøi (1864-1916), Interior in Strandgade, Sunlight on the Floor, 1901

Vilhelm Hammershøi has become one of Denmark’s most famous painters. He was part of an international movement that used muted, restricted colour schemes and avoided grand, symbolic narratives in favour of subjects that were seemingly devoid of meaning. Even though Hammershøi’s motifs display a minimum of action or movement, they have all been carefully chosen and relate to his own life. In this work, Hammershøi’s wife almost seems to merge with the interior, creating a scene of poignant intimacy.

BANG & OLUFSEN THE EXPERIENCE COMES FIRST How do you give people a sense of magic today? What is a celebrated home entertainment producer to do, now that we have all become empowered users of smartphones and tablets? Can consumers still be wowed in this day and age? The answers become crystal clear when you visit one of Bang & Olufsen’s newly designed stores, which offer a compelling realisation of the company slogan: “Bang & Olufsen exists to move you with enduring magical experiences.” Here Bang & Olufsen products have been given the store ambiance they deserve – and more. Nonetheless, what is by no means apparent when you visit the stores is that the concept was created by a designer whose childhood home was the Thy Camp, a hippie community in North Jutland. Bang & Olufsen’s new store concept is the brainchild of creative designer Johannes Torpe, who grew up in a time when the brand had become a Danish household name. To him there is a clear connection between his very first Bang & Olufsen design experience as a five-year-old boy – a BeoMaster 1900 – to the new BeoVision Avant TV. “Bang & Olufsen has never been afraid to take chances and think radically different. The eternal mission to find the perfect interplay between sound and design has led to groundbreaking new products and a unique position in the minds of the Danes as well as design lovers worldwide,” explains Torpe. With BeoVision Avant this is reflected in the way the television is tailored to the way we live with TVs today. It’s not just a television set but a veritable cockpit that controls all your home entertainment. And, of course, the sound and design is unbeatable.

Her får man en konkret oplevelse af virksomhedens parole: Bang & Olufsen exists to move you with enduring magical experiences.

A RISING STAR WITHIN HIGH-END JEWELLERY The Le Ballon collection is a tribute to life and the result of a desire to create a beautiful and poetic range of jewellery that embodies a pioneering spirit in terms of ethics as well as design and detail. By using 18-karat Fairmined gold, Ole Mathiesen embraces certified mining, bridging social responsibility and Nordic virtues with modern luxury.

In 1962, Danish watchmaker Ole Mathiesen designed his first watch collection, which more than 50 years later has become a Danish design classic. In 2015, the Ole Mathiesen company launched their first jewellery collection, Le Ballon, which is manufactured in Scandinavia. Designed by Alidra Alic, the elegant, poetic jewellery collection enshrines the honest and classic values of the illustrious watch brand. Le Ballon jewellery is inspired by the shapes of bobbing balloons as they gravitate towards the skies. The transparent gemstones in these bold yet feminine designs are almost magically held into place by an invisible, integrated locking system.

The Le Ballon collection charms its way into the heart – so innocent, yet powerful, is its symbolism. The collection speaks to our imagination as a visible reminder of life, love, laughter and effervescent joy. With a wonderful play of light, Le Ballon offers a perfect interpretation of feminine, playful elegance and elevates the almost century-old family-owned Danish watch company to a new stratosphere as an innovative creator of high-end jewellery.

Ole Mathiesen was founded in 1919 and has through three generations been the exclusive Danish representative for the world’s finest luxury timepiece brands, including Patek Philippe, Lange & Söhne, Breguet, Jaeger-LeCoultre, IWC, Cartier and Omega.

I think of myself as an editor of the collections. We have a strong heritage and a significant DNA that we need to embrace in a much more familiar way, which we haven’t done for some years. I am not sure why I believe that I am the person to do this, but I do, and it feels damn good. Now the creative responsibility of the brand is within the family, that makes it harder to debate, from a ‘taste’ point of view, whether it is wrong or right. It’s simply the way we want it. So far, we have had good responses from clients, especially from those who have been with us from the beginning, almost twenty years now. We are a brand with a happy and colorful attitude based on classic ethnic details. This is something we’re making sure not to ever forget again. How would you describe the design move to Italy? I am extremely privileged to work with a group of very talented Italian designers and product developers who create the collections based on the skills they have acquired in Italian fashion. We felt we needed an infusion of something international, something new. We wanted to add new details, a new femininity, and an edge to the collections. We respect the whole idea of DAY being Scandinavian, but, with a view from the outside and the fact that we work from Lugano, only gives us a stronger design perspective. And so far, things have gone quite smooth. For the team it’s not the fact that we work in Lugano, for them it is that the company is Danish and that they have to understand our market and our customers. Where we work; people dress differently, eat differently, have smaller dogs, and in general behaves very different from Danish people.

New responsibilities and commitments: your reflections on taking over as Creative Director? Thank God I am not alone, we are very much a team. Some of the things I do in this job I took over from Keld (Keld Mikkelsen is founder and owner of DAY Birger et Mikkelsen, and Husband to Marianne Brandi), who has always been extremely involved in the product and its DNA. Today Keld is, among other things, behind the complete structure of the collections that we follow in the design team. This structure is based on supplying, not only our own 40 something shops, but also our wholesale clients, with a steady flow of new garments delivered in different stories. The market today is very demanding; the clients know what they want. With 6 collections every year, we secure that our clients always have the possibility to be inspired by new products. How is it to work as a family? I feel very fortunate that Keld believes that I can do this. It isn’t easy for him handing me the reins. However, having participated on the side as the Mrs.’s of DAY for the past twenty years and doing the DAY HOME collections for 10 years, I do have some experience and I have learned a bit here and there. You could say that I am a late bloomer, but one thing, more important than anything, is that I will succeed and that my family will be proud of me. Our daughter Amalie just graduated from Parsons School in New York City. She is in the pipeline, getting herself ready to be involved in the family business. DAY Birger et Mikkelsen is a family business and our intentions is that this it how it should remain. We love what we do, also with all the challenges that it may bring, that’s life and this is what our daughter has seen us do all of her life. So far, it looks like she wouldn’t do it any differently.
