THORVALDSEN’S MUSEUM Thorvaldsen’s Museum is built as a framework for a single artist’s oeuvre, the Danish sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen (1770-1844). Thorvaldsen lived more than 40 years in Rome, where he became one of the most celebrated artists. In 1838, he bequeathed both his work and his art collections to his home city Copenhagen that dedicated an entire museum building to his work. Thorvaldsen Museum opened in 1848 and it was the country’s first public museum. ARKEN ARKEN collects Danish, Nordic and international art with special emphasis on contemporary art, i.e. works from 1990 onwards. There are two unifying principles in the collection: one is art concerned with the existence of modern man, the other focuses on art that via new forms, materials and media explores the very definition of art. A visit at ARKEN should be an aesthetic, emotional and intellectual challenge. With the collectionthey wish to show Danish art in a broader context, presenting their guests with an insight into the international art scene. ARKEN wishes the encounter with the museum’s collection to provide something to reflect upon, making us understand ourselves and our times better.
