LOUISIANA MUSEUM OF MODERN ART Louisiana Museum of Modern Art is situated in Denmark on the North Zealand coast in a spacious, old park with a fine view across the sound of Sweden. It houses an exquisite collection of modern art by international artists such as Arp, Francis Bacon, Louise Bourgeois, Calder, Dubuffet, Max Ernst, Sam Francis, Giacometti, Kiefer, Henry Moore, Picasso, Rauschenberg and Warhol. Every year, the Louisiana Museum shows approx 8 major exhibitions of modern and contemporary art, including classical masters of modern art as well as new and upcoming international artists. Louisiana is not merely an experience in modern and contemporary art, but a congenial reflection of the interplay between art, architecture and landscape. The park serves as an ideal setting for displaying the museum’s collection of modern sculptures. Similarly the prominent museum buildings, constructed between 1958 and 1998, offer a fascinating background for the permanent collection of twentieth century art.

Teater.
THE LITTLE MERMAID At Langelinie Pier you will find one of Copenhagen’s most important tourist attractions: The Little Mermaid. The statue from 1913 was originally a gift to the city donated by brewer Carl Jacobsen. The statue is made of bronze, is 125 cm tall and weighs 175 kg. The story of the Little Mermaid is from writer Hans Christian Andersen’s fairy tale by the same name, a story about the unhappy mermaid who wish she goes on shore.

KOLDINGHUS Above the centre of Kolding stands the castle of Koldinghus. Hilton Copenhagen Airport is a unique hotel from every angle – the light, décor and atmosphere. You feel welcome as soon as you step inside. Abuzz with international travellers, the hotel lobby features an interior design that is Nordic to the core, beautifully appointed with furniture classics by some of the greatest names of Danish mid-century design, such as Arne Jacobsen and Hans J. Wegner. Designed in 2001 by Vilhelm Lauritzen Architects, the hotel is inspired by another masterpiece by the same architects, Copenhagen Airport. The lobby is shaped like a control tower and the overarching ceiling in the large atrium is sculpted to resemble the wings of an aircraft. Amazing vistas beckon from the 382 rooms spread over 12 spacious floors. The large floorto-ceiling windows provide a spectacular, multi-faceted view: planes taking off and landing, the Copenhagen skyline, the city’s sandy urban beach and the many ships passing under the Öresund Bridge.

Comfort above all The hotel is interconnected with Copenhagen Airport’s Terminal 3 by a covered footbridge, allowing travellers easy and comfortable access. The metro and train stations are only two minutes walk from the hotel’s main entrance, offering direct rail service to contemporary and historic attractions in Copenhagen and to the Swedish city of Malmö. Hilton Copenhagen Airport offers a tasteful and convenient ambiance for travellers. Monitors in the lobby show flight times and you can check in using the self-service check-in machines. In the exclusive Executive Lounge on the 12th floor, guests staying in Executive Rooms can enjoy tranquillity and refreshments while relaxing by the fireplace or admiring the sea views across to Malmö. ‘Horizon All Day’ is the hotel’s all-day restaurant, serving delicious breakfast, lunch and dinner buffets. Those preferring à la carte can visit ‘Hamlet Nordic Dining’, a restaurant featuring dishes inspired by contemporary Nordic cuisine. And those seeking a little extra pampering can luxuriate in the hotel’s superb spa on the 2nd floor. Ni’mat Spa offers a wealth of spa and massage treatments in addition to a saltwater pool, aroma steam bath and the ‘Golden Egg’ – a unique meditative universe.

Plads til hele familien
Something for everyone And Hilton Copenhagen Airport has far more in store for visitors. With the ‘My Little Hilton’ concept, the hotel welcomes families with special package deals where children get to feel like VIP guests when climbing a small staircase og stool in the reception to help their parents check in. They also get their own backpack with drawing materials and toys. And with one of Europe’s largest aquariums, the Blue Planet, just around the corner, there is plenty of adventure for everyone. At the Blue Planet you can experience 20,000 sea creatures in 53 different display tanks. Fast-track admission to the aquarium can be purchased directly at the hotel, allowing you to avoid the entrance lines. You can also borrow a bicycle and explore Copenhagen’s 5km urban beach park, just 10 minutes away. True to the Hilton Copenhagen Airport design universe, young VIP guests also enjoy access to a creative new space, which is the brainchild of Danish design studio bObles. The innovative studio has won multiple awards for its children’s furniture designed for the rough and tumble of life. Here in the new playroom children can let off steam while their parents enjoy Sunday brunch at the adjacent restaurant. With its vibrant colours and fun furniture, the room is conceived as a multipurpose space that can also be used by those of the hotel’s many conference guests seeking a creative zone rather than a classic meeting facility.
Med konceptet “My Little Hilton” hilser hotellet hele familien velkommen i forbindelse med hotellets særlige familiepakketilbud.

One big family Hilton Copenhagen Airport is part of Hilton Worldwide, which also owns other exclusive hotel collections, including Conrad and Waldorf Astoria. Hilton Hotels & Resorts was founded in 1919 by Conrad Hilton, the greatgrandfather of it-girl Paris Hilton. The first hotel opened the very same year in Texas, and since then no fewer than 3,500 hotels have been added to the portfolio. Hilton hotels are celebrated worldwide for their high standard and exclusive décor. Indeed, the rooms at Hilton Copenhagen Airport are among the biggest in Copenhagen, ranging from 33 m2 up to the 160 m2 of the Presidential Suite. Appointed with Danish designer furniture, the rooms are bright and airy, making guests feel at one with their surroundings. In 2012, Hilton Copenhagen Airport embarked on the first stage of the refurbishment of all its rooms. The four top floors have now been revived with bright colours and light-hued wood. Headboards and curtains feature patterns from paper cuttings by fairytale writer Hans Christian Andersen. And once again, Hilton has embraced the Scandinavian design ethos, while also adding an international touch. The 15 conference rooms on the second floor have also undergone modernisation to reflect the same exclusive design. Today, they greet conference guests arriving from every corner of the world.

In the Name of the Rose I Rosens Navn
Celebrated for its watches, Swiss company Piaget is also the creator of haute joaillerie – the most prestigious and illustrious jewellery. The connection to the floral world is no coincidence. Yves G. Piaget (b. 1942), the fourth generation of the founding family, originally studied horology at Neuchâtel University and since gemmology in the US – and he’s always been very fond of roses.

Since 1976, Yves Piaget has served as a judge in the Geneva International Competition of New Roses, a contest where the prize is a gold rose in natural size, made by Piaget. In 1982, the winning rose variety was named Yves Piaget Rose. In addition, Piaget sponsors the restoration of the rose garden at Napoleon and Empress Josephine’s Parisian château, Malmaison – a garden that was and is famous for its 750 rose trees and shrubs, representing 250 species. With Piaget’s historical and contemporary connection to roses the rose motif has become synonymous with the company, which in January 2012 celebrated the flower of love with an extensive 30-year-anniversary collection, Piaget Rose. Clearly, Piaget Rose jewellery has been picked in a garden of diamonds; beautiful jewels that can flourish forever, inspired as they are in equal measure by love and nature.

Piaget – Master of Ultra-Thin
Piaget – Verdensmester i Tynde Ure
Only very few watchmakers steer clear of fleeting fads, and Piaget is one of them. Since the 1950s, the Swiss company has championed the art of ultra-thin watches. “It’s no surprise to me that there are few other watchmakers producing ultra-thin movements,” said Piaget’s CEO, Philippe Leopold-Metzger, during a visit to the Danish Piaget dealer Hvelplund. “It is often more difficult to make an ultra-slim movement than one with tourbillon, for instance. And this can only be done because Piaget also produces the tools that our talented watchmakers and decorators use when crafting an Altiplano.”

130
CEO’s choice During the interview, Metzger sports a spectacular Altiplano Automatic Skeleton, which offers an open view to the movement. Not only is the automatic movement magnificent to behold, with a height of a mere 2.4 millimetres it is also the world’s thinnest. The ultra-thin movement means that the watch itself is just 5.34 millimetres in width. It seems almost impossible to assemble a movement that is so thin and fine where some of the gears measure just 0.12 millimetres, the thickness of a single hair.
Hotel Magazine no. 25
Powered by aesthetics Nevertheless, Piaget has decided to make their laborious watchmaking process even more difficult to perform by stripping all unnecessary material from the beautifully handcrafted parts, allowing an impressive view to the record-breaking ultra-thin automatic movement. Metzger concludes the interview by stating: “Piaget produces thin watches unaffected by fads. Our Altiplano series is driven by aesthetics and movements of the highest quality.”

Supercharged Success You’ve certainly heard of it and perhaps even seen one – or maybe you’re among the lucky few who have had the pleasure of taking a spin in one. We’re talking about the Tesla Model S. In Hollywood and especially in the world’s tech epicentre, Silicon Valley, the electric luxury sedan Tesla Model S is the new black and the benchmark of high-rolling success. Emanating from the unique innovation culture of the Valley, Tesla is its best guess at the next Apple. Indeed, the six-fold rise of its share price over just one year speaks for itself.
The secret plan In 2006, Tesla’s CEO, the charismatic Elon Musk, wrote a blog entry entitled: The Secret Tesla Motors Master Plan (just between you and me). In his blog, the self-made billionaire and whiz kid behind PayPal and SpaceX explained how he in record time would turn his secret start-up into a booming business. Viewed from the boardrooms of one of the most conservative industries, his vision was simple yet also risky and revolutionary: Step 1: Build a sports car. Step 2: Use that money to build an affordable car. Step 3: Use that money to build an even more affordable car. And while doing the above also provide zero-emission electric power generation.
Den hemmelige plan I 2006 skrev Teslas CEO, den karismatiske Elon Musk, en blog med titlen: “The Secret Tesla Motors Master Plan (just between you and me)”. 1: Build a sports car. 2: Use that money to build an affordable car. 3: Use that money to build an even more affordable car. 4: While doing above, also provide zeroemission electric power generation.

Her tilbyder de Model S-ejere at lynlade deres biler gratis, altid!
144
Revolutionary concept Today, eight years on, Tesla is halfway through step two. The company’s first car, the electric Tesla Roadster, provided the innovative technology now featured in the Model S. And although only 25,000 such vehicles have rolled off the assembly line to date, Tesla is already a raving success. Stock market expectations are so high that Tesla is already worth more than the entire Fiat Group. But what makes the Model S so unique? The first thing that strikes you is the silence. While pressed back in the seat you have the feeling of being swept away by a gust of wind. No audible transmission, no exhilarating roar when engine forces are unleashed – just the luxury of silence otherwise mainly the privilege of German-built executive-class models. But it’s not just the Tesla Model S that’s in a class of its own. The whole Tesla Motors concept and approach is radically different from anything we’ve seen before, not least the company’s current drive to establish a network of Supercharge stations throughout Europe where Model S motorists can charge their vehicles for free! This charging system has been operative in Norway since last summer, and in December 2013 the first Supercharge stations will open in Germany. Before the summer of 2014, Model S owners will also be able to drive anywhere in Denmark – at Tesla’s expense. Arguably, Auto Motor und Sport had a point when posing the question – why do we need any other car?

Tesla foots the power bill The world’s leading manufacturer of electric cars, Tesla Motors has for the past year offered free power charge to US owners of the company’s awardwinning sedan Model S. Now the concept is being introduced in Europe. Motorists can charge their cars for free at Tesla’s own grid of Supercharge stations that links Europe’s major cities. Already this year, you can drive from Trondheim in Norway to Milan in Italy in a Tesla Model S as fast as in any conventional car but without causing tailpipe emissions and without having to pay for the power. Tesla’s Supercharge system is the world’s fastest, able to deliver half a charge in just 20 minutes. Model S has a maximum range of 480 kilometres, which means that just one visit to the Supercharge station will give you enough battery time for a trip from Copenhagen to Denmark’s west coast city of Esbjerg, according to Google Maps, and also save you DKK 620 on fuel.

Tesla Model S Tesla Model S is the world’s first luxury sedan developed as an electric-only car. At the heart of the vehicle is the Tesla drivetrain, which ensures extremely long range of up to 480 km, raising the bar for electrically powered motoring. The stiff handling and balanced weight distribution combined with a low centre of gravity also ensure that the Model S offers both the comfort of a luxury sedan and the road grip of a roadster. With the absence of both internal combustion engine and transmission tunnel, the Model S also offers more luggage space than any other car of its class, including storage under the bonnet/hood. Dominating the interior is a 17” touch-screen with Internet access.

Louisiana Museum of Modern Art Originally a residential home and private estate, the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art is today one of the world’s most soul and eye pleasing museums, truly in a class of its own.
The founder of the museum, Knud W. Jensen, was a renaissance man – an art lover, enthusiast and entrepreneur. In his search for a property to fulfil his dream of opening a small museum of modern Danish art, he approached author Karen Blixen in 1953 in an attempt to purchase some acres of her estate, Rungstedlund, 25 km north of Copenhagen. But Blixen turned him down. “Is there such a thing as modern art?” she questioned.
Men Blixen havde afvist.

Love at first sight One autumn day in 1954, Knud W. Jensen, accompanied by his dog, climbed the fence to an old abandoned garden by the coast north of Copenhagen and found a place he immediately fell in love with – a forlorn white villa with a gardener’s lodge, stables, coach houses, a greenhouse, pheasant pens, a lake, tennis courts, and a wilderness of fruit orchards and exotic hardwood trees. The mansion, called Louisiana, was a place of rare scenic quality. The villa had been erected in 1855 by Master of the Royal Hunt Alexander Brun on land originally belonging to Krogerup Manor and situated near an old privateer’s harbour with slipways and gun emplacements, which had been built in 1814 as a fortification against an enemy (the British) who never returned. Rather than becoming a harbour for the intended 100 gunboats, the estate became home to Alexander Brun, who married no less than three times, each time to a woman named Louise – a popular name at the time, presumably – hence the name of the mansion.

In tune with nature A man of means, Knud W. Jensen purchased the mansion and its parkland estate to create his museum. He decided to keep the “lovely name,” as he called it, “Louisiana.” Architects Jørgen Bo and Wilhelm Wohlert were commissioned to convert the mansion into a museum, with the idea that art should be experienced unpretentiously in a homelike environment. The dream came true and the museum opened in 1958. Over the past 55 years, the museum’s collections have grown to over 3000 works and visitors experience a unique balance between landscape, architecture and art. Despite several expansions to the museum of architectural marvels, both above and below ground, visitors to the museum still pass through the old mansion itself. Once inside you’re welcomed by a wonderful world of contemporary art in its many forms, from video art to photo installation. There are modernist masterpieces by artists such as Alberto Giacometti, Henry Moore and Alexander Calder, all of which entertain a dialogue with nature – the sunlight, scenery, breeze and the crashing waves. Knud W. Jensen’s original idea of creating a small museum of modern Danish art has grown into a place of international stature, but has retained its sense of grace, naturalness and openness, which leads many to call Louisiana “the world’s most beautiful museum”.
Drømmen gik i opfyldelse; museet åbnede i 1958.

Typical Danish Typisk dansk
In Danish cities like Copenhagen and Aarhus you won’t find any of the Seven Wonders of the World, nor will you find skyscrapers, mountains or ten-lane highways. What you will find is so very much the opposite: the human scale. Whether it is myth or fact that such a thing exists as a Danish tradition or style when it comes to architecture and urban planning, there is however no doubt that the diversity of architecture and urban spaces and landscapes constitutes nothing less than a national treasure, one anchored in a humanistic approach to architecture and cities that has inspired designers, politicians and planners all over the world. From heritage churches and traditional farmhouses to experimental housing projects and bicycling culture, it’s no coincidence that cities like New York and Melbourne turn to Danish urban planners for advice on sustainability. For the last decade or so, the ‘New Wave’ in Danish architecture has been pre-eminent on the architectural scene. This ‘Wave’ – characterised by an often experimental, user-centred and holistic approach to designing our surroundings, and embraced by architectural studios such as BIG and up-andcoming names like EFFEKT, COBE and Transform – has been given both positive and critical attention in the international architectural debate. Like the style(s) or not, the ‘new kids on the block’, have brought fresh energy to the debate and to Danish architecture in general. It just takes a trip to Copenhagen’s new designer district Ørestad to experience it. In this issue of Hotel Magazine we feature a small selection of architectural projects: from parks and temporary works, housing and urban spaces to the venerable Royal Danish Theatre. The projects are mainly from Copenhagen and reveal a glimpse of the diversity that is ‘typical’ of Danish architecture. Go see it for yourself. Architecture should always be experienced 1:1. Enjoy!
God tur!

By Cæcilie Skovmand
Søren Kierkegaard Lambasted in his day by Copenhagen’s satirical journal Corsaren and earning the nickname ‘Søren Sock’ due to his always stumpy trouser legs, Danish philosopher Søren Aabye Kierkegaard cut a comical figure. But he was also a passionate genius, hailed by posterity as one of Europe’s great thinkers and an inspiration to Jean-Paul Sartre and the French Existentialists. A personal quest through self-reflection to find God in an otherwise absurd and desperate world – that’s what underpins human existence, according to Danish philosopher Søren Aabye Kierkegaard (1813-1855). A worldview, Lutheran in outlook, which would later influence philosophers such as Martin Heidegger and Jean-Paul Sartre, although with French Existentialism the spiritual dimension was left out of the equation. But Kierkegaard’s passion was also his personal cross to bear. For he was an extremely complex person with a vulnerable soul yet also a feisty sense of irony with which he would lampoon inflated authorities, not least the established church. Here, 200 years after his death, Kierkegaardian philosophy still inspires contemporary thinkers and artists. In the beginning of 2013, Arnt Uhre created drawings inspired by Kierkegaard. He found a kindred spirit in Jørgen Strunge who started to process the drawings by coloring and combining them with photos. The idea of a series of Kierkegaard inspired images was born and was soon to be joined by many more compositions. After two-three months the number had reached over 200 drawings and more than 50 compositions. Some of the drawings were combined with sentences by Søren Kierkegaard and have presently been turned into 12 aesthetic posters. See more and order the posters at www.sk-tegn.dk Arnt Uhre – painter, graphic designer and sculptor. www.strunge-grafik.dk/webgalleri/arnt/index.html Jørgen Strunge – book editor, illustrator and graphic designer. www.strunge-grafik.dk
Synspunktet for min Forfatter-Virksomhed, 1859
170
If one is truly to succeed in leading a person to a specific place, one must first and foremost take care to find him where he is and begin there. “The benevolent reader I must once and for all ask in all earnestness to always have this in mind: that the total idea behind the authorship is to become a Christian.” The Point of View of My Works as an Author, 1859

So it is, therefore, in the eyes of the world dangerous to venture. And why? Because one may lose. But not to venture is wise. And yet, by not venturing, it is so awfully easy to lose that which it would be difficult to lose in even the most venturesome venture, and in any case never so easily, so completely, as if it were nothing . . . one’s self. For if I have ventured amiss – very well, then life helps me by its punishment. But if I have not ventured at all – who then helps me? And, moreover, if by not venturing at all in the highest sense (and to venture in the highest sense is precisely to become conscious of oneself) I have gained all earthly advantages – and lose myself!
Geniuses are like thunderstorms: they go against the wind, terrify people, clear the air. The established order has invented various lightning rods. And it succeeded; indeed it succeeded in making the next thunderstorm all the more serious. The Instant, No. 6, 1855

Despair is a sickness in the spirit, in the self, and so it may assume a triple form: despair at not being conscious of having a self (despair figuratively speaking), despair at not willing to be oneself, despair at willing to be oneself. Man is spirit. But what is spirit? Spirit is the self. But what is the self? The self is a relation that relates itself to its own self, or is so in the relation in which the relation relates itself to its own self; the self is not the relation but [the fact] that the relation relates itself to its own self. Man is a synthesis of the infinite and the finite, of the temporal and the eternal, of freedom and necessity, in short a synthesis. A synthesis is a relation between two factors. So regarded, man is not yet a self. The Sickness Unto Death, 1849

Afsluttende uvidenskabelig Efterskrift 1846
178
What the conception of God or of his eternal salvation is to effect in a person is that he transforms his entire existence in relation thereto, the transformation of which signifies the withering of immediacy. This happens incrementally, but then he will finally feel absolutely bound in the absolute conception of God, for the absolute conception of God is not to have the absolute idea en passant, but in every instant to have the absolute conception. This is the end of immediacy and the death sentence of destruction. Concluding Unscientific Postscript 1846

This is why, rather than taking part in official Christianity with the thousandth part of my little fingernail, I would preferably engage in the following exercise of solemnity. A flag is purchased at an ironmonger, it is unfurled; with great reverence I approach it, lift up three fingers and swear fidelity to the flag. Thereupon, costumed with a cocked hat, a cartridge-belt and sword (all from the ironmonger), I mount a hobbyhorse, and in union with others engage in a charge on the enemy, with contempt for the mortal danger into which I am evidently casting myself and with the solemnity of one who knows what it signifies to have sworn allegiance to the flag. Honestly, I have no disposition to engage in that sort of solemnity; but, if bad came to worse, I should infinitely prefer this to taking part in official Christianity of Sunday worship, the solemnity of the oath-makers. After all, the former only makes a fool of himself, while the latter makes a fool of God. The Instant, No. 10, 1855

PIETER ROOS Pieter, born in 1983, is a self-taught artist from Bruges, Belgium. His current style is defined by organic worlds: figurative, surreal... Drawing is his primary artistic base and he experiments with textures and oxidations. He often also combines recycled items and antiques and uses figurative image styles. Pieter started his artistic career in Belgium in the mid-nineties creating murals and paintings and experimenting with window dressing and interior decoration. In 1995, he turned his artistic focus to graphic art, sculpture, stage design and interior decoration. At the age of 18, his anti-institutional stance inspired him to travel and fuel his addiction for drawing. Then, from 2002-2003, while making a trip to Portugal and Spain, he decided to follow his heart and settle in Barcelona. He now lives in the neighbourhood of Gràcia and has begun to exhibit in different galleries. In addition, he sells reproductions of his works on the streets. In 2010, he also collaborated with the graphic design firm Estudio Gloria Jover on a design of T-shirt prints.

CECILIE WESTH Cecilie Westh’s works depict the human condition, the way we stage-manage our life and our underlying emotions. They portray the masks we put on and take off in our effort to fit in, masks that can be interchanged to reflect who or what we aspire to be. Her works are portrayals of the complexity of humankind, the beauty of imperfection, the quirky and the whimsical. Her characters lend themselves to the public eye with proportions that transcend accepted ideals of beauty. They live in their own world but engage in small, everyday challenges and situations, which are rendered with humour and poetry. Cecilie Westh’s work reflects a woman’s view of herself. She turns her thoughts inside out. For instance – are we humans for sale? Not necessarily for money, but we have sold our souls to society and to the things that are expected of us and to the role we have taken upon ourselves to fulfil – or for different reasons have adopted – in our yearning for the easy life. And so! What came first – the chicken or the egg, the hen, surrogate mother or the housewife? She plays with horns and wings, good and evil, with a battle that is to be fought, perhaps just in the kitchen or perhaps in our inner heart. She toys with global ideas, situations that many of us recognise from real life and with familiar setups that we perhaps see in ourselves.
