Welcome to Hotel Magazine. We hope that this magazine contributes to a pleasurable and inspiring stay with plenty of articles and information on art, culture, design and local attractions.
Read about Gerda Wegener (1885-1940), a unique figure in Danish art and currently the subject of a large solo exhibition at the ARKEN Museum of Modern Art in Ishøj south of Copenhagen. As a female artist, she portrayed the beauty of women in an unrivalled way, presented with equal parts empathy and desire. Flirtatious damsels, glamorous divas and sensual women are among Gerda Wegener’s favoured motifs.

This year sees the 190th anniversary of Holmegaard, the venerated Danish glassworks. In addition to being beautiful and functional, the worldfamous glass art from Holmegaard has always reflected the spirit of the times, and this tradition continues. New, old, and rediscovered designs come together in an elegant unity that speaks to both young and old alike. The history of Holmegaard is the history of Danish glass art and design at its very best. Holmegaard is not the only Danish company celebrating a landmark anniversary this year. 17 November 2015 marks exactly 90 years since Bang & Olufsen was founded by the two young engineers Peter Bang and Svend Olufsen in Struer, Denmark. Bang & Olufsen has over the years become renowned as an international design icon and a global symbol of audio-visual excellence. You can also read about Aston Martin, which with its new V12 Vantage S takes sports car performance to its utmost limit, delivering exceptional sporting agility underpinned by admirable long distance road holding. At the front of the magazine you will find a comprehensive guide to a wide variety of amusements, museums, galleries and concert venues. We hope that you have an excellent stay with us. Happy reading! Best regards The Team at Hilton Copenhagen Airport

HOTEL MAGAZINE NO. 29
Hilton Copenhagen Airport is a unique hotel from every angle – the light, décor and atmosphere. You feel welcome as soon as you step inside. Abuzz with international travellers, the hotel lobby features an interior design that is Nordic to the core, beautifully appointed with furniture classics by some of the greatest names of Danish mid-century design, such as Arne Jacobsen and Hans J. Wegner. Designed in 2001 by Vilhelm Lauritzen Architects, the hotel is inspired by another masterpiece by the same architects, Copenhagen Airport. The lobby is shaped like a control tower and the overarching ceiling in the large atrium is sculpted to resemble the wings of an aircraft. Amazing vistas beckon from the 382 rooms spread over 12 spacious floors. The large floorto-ceiling windows provide a spectacular, multi-faceted view: planes taking off and landing, the Copenhagen skyline, the city’s sandy urban beach and the many ships passing under the Öresund Bridge.

COMFORT ABOVE ALL
The hotel is interconnected with Copenhagen Airport’s Terminal 3 by a covered footbridge, allowing travellers easy and comfortable access. The metro and train stations are only two minutes walk from the hotel’s main entrance, offering direct rail service to contemporary and historic attractions in Copenhagen and to the Swedish city of Malmö. Hilton Copenhagen Airport offers a tasteful and convenient ambiance for travellers. Monitors in the lobby show flight times and you can check in using the self-service check-in machine. In the exclusive Executive Lounge on the 12th floor, guests staying in Executive Rooms can enjoy tranquillity and refreshments while relaxing by the fireplace or admiring the sea views across to Malmö. ‘Horizon All Day’ is the hotel’s all-day restaurant, serving delicious breakfast, lunch and dinner buffets. And those seeking a little extra pampering can luxuriate in the hotel’s superb spa on the 2nd floor. Ni’mat Spa offers a wealth of spa and massage treatments in addition to a saltwater pool, aroma steam bath and the ‘Golden Egg’ – a unique meditative universe.
HOTEL MAGAZINE NO. 29
PLADS TIL HELE FAMILIEN
SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE
And Hilton Copenhagen Airport has far more in store for visitors. With the ‘My Little Hilton’ concept, the hotel welcomes families with special package deals where children get to feel like VIP guests when climbing a small staircase og stool in the reception to help their parents check in. And with one of Europe’s largest aquariums, the Blue Planet, just around the corner, there is plenty of adventure for everyone. At the National Aquarium Denmark you can experience 20,000 sea creatures in 53 different display tanks. Fasttrack admission to the aquarium can be purchased directly at the hotel, allowing you to avoid the entrance lines. You can also borrow a bicycle and explore Copenhagen’s 5km urban beach park, just 10 minutes away. True to the Hilton Copenhagen Airport design universe, young VIP guests also enjoy access to a creative new space, which is the brainchild of Danish design studio bObles. The innovative studio has won multiple awards for its children’s furniture designed for the rough and tumble of life. Here in the new playroom children can let off steam while their parents enjoy Sunday brunch at the adjacent restaurant. With its vibrant colours and fun furniture, the room is conceived as a multipurpose space that can also be used by those of the hotel’s many conference guests seeking a creative zone rather than a classic meeting facility.
Med konceptet “My Little Hilton” hilser hotellet hele familien velkommen i forbindelse med hotellets særlige familiepakketilbud.

Hilton Copenhagen Airport is part of Hilton Worldwide, which also owns other exclusive hotel collections, including Conrad and Waldorf Astoria. Hilton Hotels & Resorts was founded in 1919 by Conrad Hilton, the greatgrandfather of it-girl Paris Hilton. The first hotel opened the very same year in Texas, and since then no fewer than 4,000 hotels have been added to the portfolio. Hilton hotels are celebrated worldwide for their high standard and exclusive décor. Indeed, the rooms at Hilton Copenhagen Airport are among the biggest in Copenhagen, ranging from 33 m2 up to the 160 m2 of the Presidential Suite. Appointed with Danish designer furniture, the rooms are bright and airy, making guests feel at one with their surroundings. In 2012, Hilton Copenhagen Airport embarked on the first stage of the refurbishment of all its rooms. The four top floors have now been revived with bright colours and light-hued wood. Headboards and curtains feature patterns from paper cuttings by fairytale writer Hans Christian Andersen. And once again, Hilton has embraced the Scandinavian design ethos, while also adding an international touch. The 15 conference rooms on the second floor have also undergone modernisation to reflect the same exclusive design. Today, they greet conference guests arriving from every corner of the world.

LOUISIANA MUSEUM OF MODERN ART Louisiana Museum of Modern Art is situated in Denmark on the North Zealand coast in a spacious, old park with a fine view across the sound of Sweden. It houses an exquisite collection of modern and contemporary art by international artists and is continually expanded. For this reason, besides individual features that are almost always on view – such as the Giacometti Gallery, the Kusama Installation, and the Powerless Structure by Elmgreen and Dragset in the Panorama Room - the bulk of the collection is shown in selected, curated presentations.
Louisiana Museum of Modern Art Gammel Strandvej 13 DK-3050 Humlebæk Tel: +45 4919 0719 www.louisiana.dk
Every year, the Louisiana Museum shows approx 8 major exhibitions of modern and contemporary art, including classical masters of modern art as well as new and upcoming international artists. Louisiana is not merely an experience in modern and contemporary art, but a congenial reflection of the interplay between art, architecture and landscape.

NY CARLSBERG GLYPTOTEK The Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek presents the largest collection of ancient art, French art and Danish Golden Age art in a frame where even the architecture and the interior is unparalleled in Denmark. The man behind the Glyptotek, Carlsberg breweries’ own Carl Jacobsen, was one of the1800’s big tycoons and patrons of the arts. He created one of his era’s greatest private art collections.

THORVALDSENS MUSEUM Thorvaldsen’s Museum is built as a framework for a single artist’s oeuvre, the Danish sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen (1770-1844). Thorvaldsen lived more than 40 years in Rome, where he became one of the most celebrated artists. In 1838, he bequeathed both his work and his art collections to his home city Copenhagen that dedicated an entire museum building to his work. Thorvaldsen Museum opened in 1848 and it was the country’s first public museum. The museum’s architecture and the exhibited sculptures play beautifully together, and the colorful and richly decorated rooms are a very special experience. The museum consists of 900 of Thorvaldsen’s own works - sculptures and reliefs in plaster and marble and designed and modeled sketches for sculptures. Most images are taken from Greek and Roman mythology - but there are also a large number of portrait busts and sculptures of European civilians, ecclesiastical and royalty, all ordered their portrait by the famous sculptor. The museum also holds Thorvaldsen’s collection of Danish and European paintings and his antique collection with marble sculptures, vases, coins and more from Egypt, Greece and Italy.

Tea was one of the most important products traded at the end of the 18th century and many merchants established and obtained their goods from docking ships at Christianshavn in Copenhagen. Among these merchants was Niels Brock Perch the founder of A.C. Perch´s Tea Shop. The idea was to sell the best teas from all over the world and today this is still our most important task. Seven generations of tea merchants have owned the family business and the historical tea shop hasn´t changed much in 180 years. Today you can choose between 175 different kinds of tea in the shop and the Tearoom offers you the traditional afternoon tea with delicious scones, petit four cakes and small finger sandwiches. ARKEN Kun 20 kilometer syd for København ligger ARKEN Museum for Moderne Kunst.
ARKEN Only 20 kilometres south of Copenhagen lies ARKEN, Denmark’s newest museum of modern art. Søren Robert Lund is the architect behind the distinctive building, which has risen on the water’s edge in Køge Bugt Beach Park since the opening in 1996. As suggested by the name, the building was designed as a metaphor for a ship, and the maritime architecture and the museum identity revolve around the location. In 2015 the sea is set to move closer to the museum when the surrounding nature is landscaped to create an ”Island of Art” encompassed by water. ARKEN offers world-class art. Each year the museum puts on 7 or 8 different exhibitions of modern Danish, Nordic and international art. The collection mainly consists of contemporary art. ARKEN also houses one of Europe’s most important collections from the renowned British artist Damien Hirst as well as a spectacular work by Chinese artist Wi Weiwei.

The story is told through portraits, paintings, furniture and decorative arts and on your way you will meet kings, queens, nobles, bourgeois, all of which have helped to shape Denmark’s history and development from the middle ages to the 21st century. The extravagant renaissance building with its many spires and towers were built by king Christian 4. In 1859 there was a fire that destroyed much of the castle’s interior, but you can still find chambers that tell the story of the king’s castle. The Chapel and the Audience Chamber survived the fire and the two rooms, one from the renaissance and the other from thebaroque, are some of Denmark’s finest preserved royal interiors.

THE HIRSCHSPRUNG COLLECTION The Hirschsprung Collection is filled with major works from the history of Danish art. Here you enter a treasure trove of Danish paintings with works from the Danish Golden Age, Skagen painters and symbolism. You will be overwhelmed by the beautiful, impressive and groundbreaking paintings from the 19th and early 20th century. The exhibition is a journey from canvas to canvas through a time period where romanticism, naturalism and modernism left their mark on Danish art. The Hirschsprung Collection is the private art collection of Danish tobacco manufacturer Heinrich Hirschsprung, which he donated to the Danish state in 1902. The exhibition gives visitors a chronological overview of Danish painting by artist like C. W. Eckersberg, Christen Købke, Anna Ancher and Johannes Larsen. In the museum’s beautifully decorated rooms you can explore the Danish Golden Age and enjoy Eckersberg’s studies in model painting and his fascination of the antique or get a sense of romanticism by admiring the ideals in landscape paintingsby J. Th. Lundbye.

BJØRN WIINBLAD 13 June 2015 – 17 January 2016 Bjørn Wiinblad (1918-2006) was a loner in Danish art, design and artistcraftsmanship. His elegant curlicues and luxuriant forms are a popular national heritage in Denmark, and now his imaginative universe is seeing a revival. Bjørn Wiinblad wanted the beautiful. As an imagemaker and as a human being he took an aestheticizing approach to the world. His highly ornamented, figurative fairytale universe was created with a meticulous wealth of detail that testifies to a passion for the inclusive, atmospheric and decorative. It is his characteristic line that binds his whole universe together. Opinion is divided on Bjørn Wiinblad – for some people he goes to the heart of personal memories; for others he is simply far too much. Nevertheless Bjørn Wiinblad enjoys a significant place in our shared cultural heritage, and for that very reason it is relevant to cast a fresh glance on his artistic production. ARKEN presents the most wide-ranging exhibition ever of Wiinblad with ceramics, tapestries, posters, illustrations, costumes and stage design, with a focus on his sources of inspiration and his unique artistic line. Through samples of his extensive production, the exhibition paints a nuanced picture of Wiinblad’s oeuvre.

THE ROYAL DANISH THEATRE The Royal Danish Theatre has since 1748 been located by one of Copenhagen’s main squares, Kongens Nytorv. Over the years, many famous people have visited the theatre, including Danish philosopher Søren Kierkegaard, who saw a performance of Mozart’s Don Giovanni.

The Royal Danish Ballet is one of the world’s most renowned companies and the caretaker of a unique Bournonville tradition, which is characterised by refined mimetic narrative and effortless ease. The Bournonville legacy is the backbone of the Royal Danish Ballet’s repertoire. KOLDINGHUS Midt i Kolding ligger Koldinghus.

A GLASSWORKS WITH VISION By Kristina Antivakis
When Holmegaard marks its 190th anniversary this year, it is celebrated not only for its beautiful and functional glass, but also for the way the world-renowned glassworks reflects the spirit of the times with its splendid unity of groundbreaking designs and rediscovered classics.
143
THE MAGAZINE NO. 29
144
When solid craftsmanship and beautiful design intersect, something magical happens. And throughout its history, Holmegaard glassworks, which celebrates its 190th anniversary this year, has proudly managed to maintain this sense of magic. Their classics, such as the Provence bowl, the Selandia dish and the MB vase, adorn Danish as well as international homes worldwide. The young and old alike are still entranced by the unique DNA that Holmegaard represents: beautiful, functional design of high quality. Holmegaard’s classic pieces have become design icons and their spirits bottle (also known as a ‘glug-glug decanter’) has achieved special status in many homes, so this year the bottle will be available as a limited-edition anniversary version. To celebrate the year in which Holmegaard became Denmark’s first industrial glassworks, 1825 numbered pieces will be produced. The 2015 version of the spirits bottle features three pillars instead of the usual four, and will be available in an elegant smoke-brown anniversary colour.

THE DREAM OF GLASS FOR EVERYONE
Countess Henriette Danneskiold-Samsøe was ahead of her time when she established the Holmegaard glassworks in 1825. She had a strong vision of creating beautiful, functional glass design of high quality. The Countess was a pioneer within a number of areas and laid the foundations for the Holmegaard glassworks we know today. Architect Jacob E. Bang was brought in as artistic director in 1928. He had a clear vision to create functional decorative art that was also attainable. His concept was a great success, and Jacob E. Bang is responsible for having designed the Primula collection – the smoke-coloured glass that is the nearhallmark of 1930s glass design. In 1942, designer Per Lütken succeeded Jacob E. Bang and over the course of 40 years he designed more than 300 Holmegaard collections. The Provence bowl was his masterpiece – a classic that marks its 60th anniversary this year. In 1968, Lütken handed the reins to Jacob E. Bang’s son, Michael Bang. As a child of the 1960s, he led the glassworks into a period characterised by vivid colours and fun glass shapes.

Bl.a. den prisvindende designer Maria Berntsen.
146
A NEW ERA
The Holmegaard glassworks still reflects the spirit of its times – renewing itself and maintaining its unique DNA resulting from 190 years of experience: functional, beautiful design of high quality. Holmegaard is a glassworks that has remained on Danish hands, passionately combining the ancient craft of glassmaking with the vision of innovative new designers. For it is precisely by combining 190 years of experience with new blood that Holmegaard has maintained its world-renowned position with confidence. In 2008, the Rosendahl Design Group acquired the rights to design and produce Holmegaard glass and this became the starting point for young design talents to successfully partner with the traditional glassworks. These talents include the award-winning designer Maria Berntsen. With her ‘Design with Light’ collection she has created a universe that elegantly reflects the traditions of Scandinavian interior design. In tune with Holmegaard’s DNA, coupling functionality with beautiful design, her leather-handled lanterns provide a sense of cosiness in many a home. When award-winning glass artist Peter Svarre undertook the development of the Cocoon collection for Holmegaard, it took him three years to create the first vase. As with so many other collections in the tradition-rich Holmegaard family, no compromise was made, and Cocoon is the perfect complement to the company’s modernist style. But as always, Holmegaard never rests on its laurels. The proof is in the award-winning Urania glass acoustic sound amplifier for the iPhone. In a unique partnership with American glass designer Aric Snee, Holmegaard is taking an important step into the future, but not without bringing its 190 years of experience along for the journey. For it is only by building on the special DNA that has made Holmegaard famous the world over that the company can embrace the challenges and opportunities of the modern technological world.

V12 VANTAGE S Providing the most visceral yet engaging sports car experience in the British luxury car maker’s current range, the V12 Vantage S delivers exceptional sporting agility underpinned by admirable long distance refinement. THE MAGAZINE NO. 29
Equipped with the excellent 573 PS Aston Martin AM28 6.0-litre V12 engine, featuring latest generation Bosch engine management, the car is capable of reaching 205 mph. Peak and low rev torque has been improved appreciably, with the V12 Vantage S generation. With 620 Nm available at 5,750 rpm – up from 570 Nm previously – the V12 Vantage S is not to be found wanting. Crucially, too, low rev torque – measured at just 1,000 rpm – leaps from 440 Nm to 510 Nm in the V12 engine. This serves to both flatten and fatten the torque curve, thereby significantly improving drivability. Aston Martin said: “The V12 Vantage S is, simply, pure Aston Martin. It is extreme in its nature yet truly timeless in its design language. Learning from our successes on the track feeds the development of this type of car” Race car technology runs right through the DNA of the V12 Vantage S with, for instance, CNC machined combustion chambers and hollow cam shafts just two examples of track technology feeding through to the road. Another clear example is the car’s gearbox. The Sportshift™ III AMT (automated manual transmission) is a major development of the automated manual gearbox that appears in the current V8 Vantage S. Designed and engineered to exploit the full sporting potential of the V12 engine, the Sportshift™ III hydraulically actuated automated manual transmission provides motorsport-style paddle shift changes for optimum performance delivery and efficiency. The unit is also appreciably lighter compared to the V12 Vantage - saving 25 kg. This race-derived and motorsport proven technology – used routinelyin Aston Martin Racing’s race-winning Vantage GT4, GT3 and GTE competition cars – provides for great driver control with only milliseconds of torque interruption and delivers precise and swift gear changes. The Sportshift™ III transaxle, from transmission experts Oerlikon Graziano, joins an extensive array of sportand track-focused developments that ensure the V12 Vantage S is fully equipped to exploit the huge performance potential of its 6.0- liter naturally aspirated AM28 engine. The debut of three-stage adaptive damping – another ‘first’ for the Vantage family – allows the driver to more precisely tailor the car’s dynamic character. ‘Normal’, ‘Sport’ and ‘Track’ modes provide a broad swathe of dynamic performance that can be tuned to better suit the driver’s requirements. The system also governs the level of power steering assistance offered. Working alongside the extended adaptive damping system is a ‘Sport’ mode, controlled via a button on the center console, which alters throttle response, gearshift speed and timing, and exhaust note to, once again, tunes the character of the car to the driver’s requirements. A exhaust system – derived from that of the One-77hypercar, no less – is lighter, smaller and, crucially, even more sonorous than that of the V12 Vantage. The ZF Servotronic power assisted steering has also been added to make the experience even more exciting. With a quicker 15:1 ratio, it is linked to the adaptive damping button and offers two-mode steering assistance designed to best match the ‘Sport’ or ‘Normal’ settings generated by the Adaptive Damping System.

PURE POWER, BEAUTIFULLY PRESENTED
The V12 Vantage S has been restyled to reflect is position as the flagship of the Vantage range. Most noticeable, perhaps, is the car’s grille that does away with the famous aluminium vanes – replacing them with a carbon fibre arrangement that also includes sporty black carbon fibre or titanium silver mesh. Created to maximise airflow to the V12 engine, the grille is inspired by that of the remarkable CC100 Speedster Concept, nicknamed DBR100, which debuted at the 24 Hours of Nürburgring in 2013 and which signals a new era of Aston Martin design language. Other clues that single out the car, includes the debut of lightweight forged alloy ten-spoke wheels, and a subtle yet distinctive exterior graphics pack that includes black painted roof and part painted boot panel. The V12 Vantage S of course retains the same compact proportions and muscular stance as its predecessor, while features such as the pronounced bonnet vents and flared wheel arches underscore its sporting abilities. Inside, as out, the V12 Vantage S has been styled to reflect its powerful nature. Seating with Sport and carbon fibre Lightweight seat options, revised stitching and welt detailing, two leather grade options – Luxmill and semi-aniline – plus the possibility to include Alcantara, present V12 Vantage S buyers with an exciting array of trim choices. The optional Carbon Fibre Interior Pack, which adds the material to the car’s facia and door pulls, plus the availability for the first time in a V12 Vantage S of black pedals, further enhances personalisation options for those in search of a truly bespoke sports car. Aston Martin added: “The V12 Vantage S is our most extreme Vantage to date – engineered to bring race car performance and technology to the open road. It is our most powerful engine in a beautifully tailored suit. It is elegant, yet brutal, and it is at the same time easy to control. It has everything that sums up Aston Martin: Power, Beauty and Soul!” For further information: www.astonmartin.com

Gerda Wegener (1885-1940) was in many ways a unique artist ahead of her time. A daughter of a clergyman from East Jutland, she always went her own way. She created a stir with her dynamic personality and lusciously made-up appearance. Her perfumed and decadent urban motifs were rendered with a refined air in an age when Danish art was all about natural, down-to-earth everyday life. Wegener achieved great success in Paris within a wide scope of artistic and commercial genres and earned good money. However, her ambiguous sexuality and marriage with the transgender landscape painter Einar Wegener, who set aside his own career to aid his wife and even modelled for her dressed in women’s clothes, challenged contemporary norms and was hard to digest for many at the time. After her life, Wegener faded into oblivion and was all but erased from the annals of art history. But whereas her extraordinary life and work challenged the notions of her own day and age, gender identity is today high on the global agenda.

A CONTROVERSIAL FEMME FATALE
Gerda Wegener gained sudden fame when, in the spring of 1907, she involuntarily became the focal point of a lengthy and heated debate in the Danish daily Politiken known today as the ‘Peasant Painter Controversy’. The rejection of Wegener’s stylised and elegant Portrait of Ellen von Kohl by two major juried exhibitions had angered several of Wegener’s colleagues. Her critics, on the other hand, advocated a more realistic and naturalistic approach to pictorial art, favouring the Funen Painters and their depictions of simple country life. The controversy therefore centred on Wegener’s portrayal of a woman who was anything but a humble wench. Rendered as a 16th century highly literate Italian Renaissance lady, her hands rest gracefully while she gazes enigmatically at the beholder. Wegener avoided taking part in the debate, although with characteristic vigour she drew advantage of the imbroglio by arranging a solo exhibition the same year. The exhibition drew large crowds, but despite her success as a portrait painter and cartoonist for several Danish magazines, the Danish art scene never really warmed to the Danish femme fatale. In 1912, Wegener moved with her husband to Paris.

AN EYE FOR WOMEN
Besides being a popular portrait painter of elegant society ladies, Gerda Wegener also enjoyed success as a cartoonist and fashion illustrator in Paris. In a time when the male gaze enjoyed an apparent monopoly on the artistic rendering of beautiful female bodies, Wegener’s pictorial world was awash with coquettish girls, foxy vixens and sleekly trimmed tomboys. These female models were more than mere objects of male sexual desire. With red pouting mouths, bedroom eyes and seductive postures they intentionally invite the viewer’s admiration. The masculine gaze has simply been replaced with that of the female artist, who desires as well as identifies with the women she portrays.

LILI – MUSE AND ICON
In Gerda Wegener’s works there is also room for flamboyant, rouged men from the theatre as well as masked personas enigmatically toying with their gender identity. In this inclusive world, Wegener’s spouse, Einar Wegener, was given wide scope to portray ‘Lili’ in a parade of coy feminine postures. Lili was transgender, yet beyond the realm of Wegener’s beautiful, embracing canvases, life was not easy. Einar dreamed of personifying his wife’s idealised depictions of Lili and became unhappy with his own male body. In 1930, he succeeded in becoming one of the first in history to undergo gender corrective procedures. But the many surgical operations invalidated his marriage with Gerda Wegener and finally cost him his life. In 1931, Lili Elbe died from complications following her last surgery. Today, Lili is celebrated as a pioneer of the trans-movement worldwide, and in November this year, Tom Hooper’s Hollywood movie The Danish Girl about Gerda and Lili will premiere in the USA. On 7 November 2015, the ARKEN Museum of Modern Art opens its doors to the largest-ever Gerda Wegener retrospective. In light of the centenary of women’s suffrage in Denmark, the museum pays homage to a strong artist whose works not only touched a nerve in our own time, but above all represent a timeless tale of courage and boundless love.

THE MAGAZINE NO. 29
One of Denmark’s leading design companies, GUBI was born long after the mid-century golden age of Danish Modern and today offers a contemporary portfolio of classics as well as new designs. International in outlook, GUBI founder and company owner Jacob Gubi combs flea markets, auctions and archives worldwide to find and revive long forgotten twentieth-century designs. Among the classics in the company’s portfolio are the Bestlite lamps from the UK lamp factory Best & Lloyd. GUBI also forges partnerships with new talents, such as the Danish-Italian design duo GamFratesi, whose timeless Beetle and Masculo chairs are now part of the GUBI family. GamFratesi Design Studio was established in 2006 by Stine Gam (born 1975) and Enrico Fratesi (born 1978), who both belong to a younger generation of furniture architects. Stine is Danish, while Enrico is Italian, and together they represent a new interpretation of the fusion of Danish craftsmanship and Italian conceptual design as well as embracing an experimental approach to a materials and techniques. GUBI was one of the first design companies to collaborate with GamFratesi, and Jacob Gubi is skilled at spotting up-and-coming talents. Today, GamFratesi is experiencing great success, not only on the Scandinavian market but also globally. Since partnering with GUBI in 2011, the designers have made several products for GUBI (the Masculo Chair, Paper Table, Beetle Chair, TS Table) all of which have experienced great success, not least the Beetle Chair.

DAY BIRGER ET MIKKELSEN’S 20 YEARS IN FASHION

THE MAGAZINE NO. 29
DAY BIRGER ET MIKKELSEN was created by Keld Mikkelsen, who had a vision of combining his ethnic travel experiences with beautiful Scandinavian design, adding a masculine dimension to a vintage-inspired style. The result is a luxurious mix of modern classics with exquisitely crafted details and imaginative elements – unique everyday styles with a contemporary take. Since its founding in 1997, DAY BIRGER ET MIKKELSEN has nurtured a strong design DNA that blends ethnic bohemian with Scandinavian modernism. The merging of these two styles had long nurtured its creative origins in Denmark, until the summer of 2015 when the company moved the entire department to one of fashion’s epicentres, Lugano in Switzerland. “DAY BIRGER ET MIKKELSEN has always been a premium fashion brand that combines the ethnic style with a Scandinavian look. In fashion, it’s important that we continuously develop our style so that we remain relevant to consumers. We seek to remain in motion with our products, which sometimes requires that we also relocate physically, too. By moving our design department to Lugano, we situate our creative centre in the heart of craftsmanship, good quality and innovative design development (...) Even though we now engage with new international talents we are still very conscious of our Scandinavian origin, and that the Scandinavian style is also part of DAY BIRGER ET MIKKELSEN. That’s why we still have a large team of Scandinavian designers behind the brand,” says DAY BIRGER ET MIKKELSEN founder and chairman, Keld Mikkelsen. In less than two years’ time, DAY BIRGER ET MIKKELSEN will celebrate its 20th anniversary. Building on its Scandinavian origin, the brand has throughout the years made a significant mark on the Danish and Scandinavian fashion scenes. “As a global company with three strong individual brands – DAY BIRGER ET MIKKELSEN, 2NDDAY and DAY ONE, the latter two of which are still designed and developed in Denmark – the aim is to create the best conditions and framework for our future development so we continue appealing to women around the world who want our exquisitely designed, high quality fashion and bags at competitive prices,” Keld Mikkelsen concludes.

UNCUT CHIC Maya Bjørnsten, owner of Roughdiamonds.dk in Denmark, admits that before she came across her company’s namesake gemstone, her talent as a jewellery designer had lain largely dormant. It was a chance encounter – a look through some of her husband’s photographs of uncut natural diamonds taken in Antwerp, the capital of the world’s diamond trade – that sparked what would become a deep passion. Maya immediately tried to source a piece of jewellery made from rough diamonds, and discovered that there were precious few available. So she set about making her own. “There are few people in the world with access to rough diamonds. My clients benefit from the fact that I’m one of them and can acquire diamonds of different shapes and characteristics,” says Maya. “Every stone is unique,” she continues. “And in their uncut, unpolished state they exhibit a raw beauty. They are as Mother Nature created them.” Maya handpicks every one of the diamonds she uses – all of which are of gem quality, which makes up only 20 percent of the diamonds in trade. She then considers the design, sometimes over a matter of months. “The diamond itself is my inspiration,” she explains. “The design has to showcase its beauty. When you cut and polish stone, you take away its unique story. Even its colour tells a tale – green, yellow and the rarer pink and blue stones are all created depending on the elements that were present when the stone came into being.” Uniqueness is key to each of Maya’s pieces. She carefully designs the housing for every one of her rings, pendants, necklaces, bracelets or cufflinks using white gold or yellow gold. “I go by their natural form,” she says. “These stones speak to you, and I can see that with my clients. They pick up a particular ring and say ‘this is the one’.” Once Maya has completed her design, diamond setters and goldsmiths set about making it real. And the designer insists on only working with highly experienced artisans. “It’s understated luxury that I’m selling,” she says. “Many of my clients haven’t been able to find a piece of jewellery that they can identify with elsewhere, while others are tired of bling and looking for something more authentic.” Maya Bjørnsten’s new Bredgade store may be a bit of a challenge to find, but after turning heads with an exhibition at the royal Amalienborg Palace, Maya Bjørnsten’s unique collection has found a home befitting the natural beauty of rough diamonds. “Along the journey, we picked up admirers while displaying in Paris, as well as in Dover Street Market in London, Tokyo and New York. Come in and see Mother Nature’s handiwork at its finest – lovingly set in the finest gold with restraint to ensure that the rough diamond’s beauty always steals the show,” she concludes. Love it like it is. RoughDiamonds.dk Fine Jewellery by Maya Bjørnsten Bredgade 56 1260 Copenhagen

Four adventurers break new ground for the world’s only electric SUV, the Model S P85D, on the wheel tracks encircling the Hekla volcano in Iceland.
The roads meander gently through the snow-capped mountains of Iceland. The heavy skies herald changeable weather, while the tarmac roads turn to gravel wheel tracks. The landscapes around the Hekla volcano are famed for offering some of the world’s most challenging test-driving with variable surfaces of mud, lava rock and snow. Only the best off-road vehicles venture beyond the roadways. On a skiing trip to Iceland in Tesla’s top SUV model, extreme skiers Cornelia Zamernik, Marielle Jaurig, Timo Hermeler and Jacob Slot couldn’t resist putting the electric four-wheel drive to the ultimate test.

Dette går imidlertid ud over effektiviteten.
188
FUTURE FOUR-WHEEL DRIVE
The Model S with dual motor represents a significant improvement to the traditional four-wheel drive systems. With two independent motors, one in the front and one rear, the Model S electronically distributes the torque to all four wheels. The result is an outstanding road grip under all weather conditions. Generally, SUVs are designed with complex mechanical power exchanges to distribute torque from a single engine to all four wheels, a method that nonetheless reduces power efficiency. This is why the Model S P85D combines a high-performance motor at the rear with a smaller motor at the front to achieve supercar acceleration from 0 to 100 kph in 3.3 seconds and an electronically limited top speed of 250 kph.

ekstreme krav til vejgreb
EXTREME TRACTION
As they approached Hekla, the all-wheel drive met with its first challenge. The weather in Iceland is changeable, and if you travel through the mountainscapes this time of year you’ll experience rain, snow, sleet, sun and mist – all within a few kilometres. The weather conditions place extreme demands on grip, and Icelanders rarely hit the roads outside towns without AWD. The Hekla volcano offers outstanding nature, and before the team ventured along unmarked roads where no electric car had ever been before they found time to test the local skiing conditions at Eskifjörður. Skiing in Iceland can be an intense experience where visibility and snow conditions are in constant flux. A ray of sunlight in the fog will suddenly show the way ahead before a snowy whiteout envelopes you.
MECHANICS VERSUS ELECTRONICS
After a few twists and turns, the team encounters a sun-kissed lava plain. Over the millennia, the many volcanic eruptions on Iceland have caused the land to be covered with tephra, which is a general term for the fragmental lava stone that makes the terrain alternate between hard surfaces, sand-like powder and expanses of small and porous light shingles, much like driving on glass beads. Here only the very best AWDs can make their way. In the desolate terrain the team encountered one of the automotive giants of the plains – a 4x4 that only due to its oversized wheels was able to navigate the shingle and mud. This was a rendezvous between the mechanics of yesteryear designed to cope with one task only and the digital age of intelligent solutions, just-intime alignment and millisecond precision, which enables car designs to shed their excess weight to create innovative vehicles such as the Model S, which can not only compete with a Ferrari on the racetrack but also a Ford Explorer in the Nordic wilderness.
Her kommer kun de allerbedste AWD’ere frem.

Lange & Söhne, Breguet, Jaeger-LeCoultre, IWC, Cartier, Omega, GirardPerregaux, Longines, et al. Ole Mathiesen is furthermore also an authorised service centre for a number of these leading watch brands. The company’s history began almost 100 years ago, but 1962 marked a landmark year. This was when the classic Ole Mathiesen watch was introduced and a new era began for the company. Since its inception, the classic Ole Mathiesen watch has been considered a Danish design classic, claiming its place within the beautiful and internationally admired Danish design tradition. The timely yet timelessly discrete watches submit elegantly to their wearer and emphasize the fact that their qualities indeed lie in their honest, paired-down design. In 2004, Ole Mathiesen was also awarded the honourable Danish Classics Prize. The year 2014 was also when Ole Mathiesen presented their first impressive jewellery collection, Le Ballon, which is made exclusively using 18 carat fairmined gold. With the Le Ballon pieces, the unique coloured facet cut gemstones create an intriguing and seductive play of light. An ingenious invisible socket bearing secures the stones. The collection is entirely handmade in Scandinavia. The Le Ballon collection oozes of honest Scandinavian values, high quality and of a pioneering spirit that is embodied not only in the unique details but also in the unparalleled aesthetics and ethos of the brand.
Virksomhedens historie begyndte for næsten 100 år siden.

VIPP SHELTER - A HUMAN BATTERY CHARGER
192
THE MAGAZINE NO. 29
The Danish design company Vipp has made a plug and play getaway that allows you to escape urban chaos in a 55m2 all-inclusive nature retreat equipped with everything from kitchen to lighting. Vipp delivers and installs. All you have to do is to point where you want it. A steel object emerges in a rugged landscape framed by naked trees and a silent lake that mirrors in the window facade. The shelter stands as a solid rock in sharp contrast to its surroundings. Yet, with its steel frame embracing the large glass surfaces, the rock becomes transparent projecting the landscape into the interior. Vipp is rooted in the manufacture of industrial objects, which come to show in every detail. The company’s favorite material since 1939, steel, is a recurring element cutting across the shelter frame and exterior façade. From the legendary pedal bin to the shelter feeling and function are key Vipp elements. When it comes to the perfect getaway, it must be remote, smart, spontaneous and surrounded by breathtaking nature. Vipp CEO and third generation in the company, Kasper Egelund, sums it all up: “The shelter is 5-star camping”.

Muriel Kerba

Gaëtan de Séguin casts roles for his anonymous characters as if they were extras in a major scene. Now and then some of them break away for a moment. Each silhouette reveals itself essentially to balance the harmony of the whole. The artist offers us different perspectives. He invites us to alternately discover the details of the materials and explore the totality of his compositions. His colourful and subtle palette fades away behind the pattern. The shades come to life with his scratch effects. Hidden scratches then resurface despite successive coats of paint. Gaëtan de Séguin’s painting is all about the shades. It keeps questioning the individual and his place in the greater scheme of life.” Muriel Kerba

Brasiliens kaotiske, farverige og glade livsfilosofi over for Sveriges mere velordnede, beherskede minimalisme.

RUBIA CALDEIRA Brazilian artist Rubia Caldeira (b. 1985) is heading towards her breakthrough within Pop Art. Her style is characterised by strong and playful visual expressions with lots of energy. Her paintings are created using black and white oil paints and framed with details of silver. The combination of the influences she received from both Brazil and Sweden is perhaps what distinguishes her art the most. Brazil’s chaotic, colourful and joyful philosophy of life versus Sweden’s more organised, balanced and minimal style. Rubia primarily paints faces and in her newest paintings we see portraits of such artists as Keith Richards, Lady Gaga and Mick Jagger – all in classic black and white Pop Art style. She also works with the concept of ‘Selfie Art’ where she brings photos to life on canvas.
