NY CARLSBERG GLYPTOTEK The Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek presents the largest collection of ancient art, French art and Danish Golden Age art in a frame where even the architecture and the interior is unparalleled in Denmark. The man behind the Glyptotek, Carlsberg breweries’ own Carl Jacobsen, was one of the1800’s big tycoons and patrons of the arts. He created one of his era’s greatest private art collections. The brewer was a passionate collector and nearly squandered his entire fortune to create the exceptional collection of art and artifacts. At the Glyptotek you can gain insight into the ancient Mediterranean cultures where Europe has its artistic, philosophical and political roots. World renowned Greek and Roman sculptures can be seen side by side with mummies and funerary objects from ancient Egypt. Follow man’s trail through 6,000 years from the early empires in the Middle East, Egypt to Greece and the Roman Empire.

THORVALDSENS MUSEUM Thorvaldsen’s Museum is built as a framework for a single artist’s oeuvre, the Danish sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen (1770-1844). Thorvaldsen lived more than 40 years in Rome, where he became one of the most celebrated artists. In 1838, he bequeathed both his work and his art collections to his home city Copenhagen that dedicated an entire museum building to his work. Thorvaldsen Museum opened in 1848 and it was the country’s first public museum. The museum’s architecture and the exhibited sculptures play beautifully together, and the colorful and richly decorated rooms are a very special experience. The museum consists of 900 of Thorvaldsen’s own works - sculptures and reliefs in plaster and marble and designed and modeled sketches for sculptures. Most images are taken from Greek and Roman mythology - but there are also a large number of portrait busts and sculptures of European civilians, ecclesiastical and royalty, all ordered their portrait by the famous sculptor. The museum also holds Thorvaldsen’s collection of Danish and European paintings and his antique collection with marble sculptures, vases, coins and more from Egypt, Greece and Italy.

KAY BOJESEN Denmark’s largest retrospective of the playful world of Kay Bojesen is featured at Sophienholm. One of the greatest legends of mid-century Danish design, Kay Bojesen (1886-1958) is celebrated for his spirited and whimsical touch. A major retrospective of his most iconic housewares and design objects of wood and silver will be on show at Sophienholm, an 18th century aristocratic manor turned modern art museum located just north of Copenhagen. Here you can explore the playful world of Bojesen – including his beloved animals, toys and other wooden figurines – which is rooted in the design ethos of Danish Modern. And now due to great popular demand a number of Bojesen’s silver and stainless steel objects have been re-launched by Kay Bojesen ApS, a company headed by Kay Bojesen’s granddaughter, Susanne Bojesen Rosenqvist. The Kay Bojesen exhibition will be featured at Sophienholm from 28 June 28 to 21 September 2014.

FREDERIKSBORG CASTLE Art, culture and history is gathered at king Christian 4.s renaissance castle, which is one of Copenhagen suburban’s finest museums. A tour of Frederiksborg Castle’s many beautiful rooms is a journey through 500 years of Danish history. The story is told through portraits, paintings, furniture and decorative arts and on your way you will meet kings, queens, nobles, bourgeois, all of which have helped to shape Denmark’s history and development from the middle ages to the 21st century. The extravagant renaissance building with its many spires and towers were built by king Christian 4. In 1859 there was a fire that destroyed much of the castle’s interior, but you can still find chambers that tell the story of the king’s castle. The Chapel and the Audience Chamber survived the fire and the two rooms, one from the renaissance and the other from thebaroque, are some of Denmark’s finest preserved royal interiors.

Teater.

The statue from 1913 was originally a gift to the city donated by brewer Carl Jacobsen. The statue is made of bronze, is 125 cm tall and weighs 175 kg. THE ROYAL DANISH THEATRE The Royal Danish Theatre has since 1748 been located by one of Copenhagen’s main squares, Kongens Nytorv. Over the years, many famous people have visited the theatre, including Danish philosopher Søren Kierkegaard, who saw a performance of Mozart’s Don Giovanni. The Royal Danish Theatre today consists of three main venues: the new waterside Opera House, the new Royal Danish Playhouse and the Old Stage, which now mainly features ballet performances. The Royal Danish Ballet is one of the world’s most renowned companies and the caretaker of a unique Bournonville tradition, which is characterised by refined mimetic narrative and effortless ease. The Bournonville legacy is the backbone of the Royal Danish Ballet’s repertoire. Nonetheless, the company also has an eye for contemporary choreography and features a wide and varied repertoire of high artistic merit.

Royal Regalia at Rosenborg Castle.
ROSENBORG CASTLE A small royal hermitage in the heart of Copenhagen surrounded by parkland, Rosenborg Castle was the favoured summer residence of its creator, King Christian IV (1577-1648) – the nation’s most industrious monarch. He is also believed to have been the architect of the Dutch Renaissance castle, which was completed in 1624. The castle’s 400-year-old epoch interiors feature royal collections, portraits and whimsical mementoes.

KOLDINGHUS Above the centre of Kolding stands the castle of Koldinghus. It was on this site in 1268 that the Danish King built a fortress for the purpose of guarding the border between the Kingdom of Denmark and the Duchy of Schleswig. The earliest parts still standing date from the 15th century. Excellent temporary exhibitions, and impressive silver collections of faience ware and war memorabilia. The newly-restored wings of the castle have now also become international attractions in themselves. Koldinghus, Markdanersgade 11, DK-6000 Kolding, Tel. 76 33 81 00, www.koldinghus.dk

NYHAVN During summer, Nyhavn is the perfect place to enjoy a spot of al fresco dining. Or, if you prefer, you can do like the locals and buy a beer from a nearby store and rest your feet at the quayside. Den Nye Havn, ‘the New Haven’, was originally a busy commercial port where ships from all over the world would dock. The area teemed with sailors, ladies of pleasure, pubs and alehouses. ‘Den Nye Havn’ eventually changed its name to ‘Nyhavn’ (‘Newhaven’), and gradually the beautiful old slanted houses were renovated and classy restaurants started popping up. No. 9, Nyhavn, is the oldest house in the area dating back to 1681. The design of the house has not been altered since that time.

Gold on their minds Two ambitious sisters have embarked on an innovative project to rekindle an interest in Danish jewellery, not only in Denmark but also around the world. Their latest project has already sent sparks flying in London. Pernille Møbjerg Knudsen and Charlotte Møbjerg Ansel-Henry have years of experience working with both national and international jewellery brands. Their company, Goldmind Communications, has recently launched a new initiative, ‘The Jewellery Room’, which offers a platform for selected jewellery brands to showcase their finest designs for the Danish and international fashion press and buyers alike. The project first opened its doors in August 2013, when the most ambitious Danish jewellery brands came together with a single message: to convey the unique design heritage of Danish jewellery. “We established ‘The Jewellery Room’ because we had for some time experienced that a variety of different jewellery brands were struggling to get noticed in the fashion industry. By bringing together the most interesting (brands) in a joint promotion, we could give them just that: a comprehensive approach to what Danish jewellery has to offer,” says Pernille Møbjerg Knudsen.

Danske smykketalenter
Danish jewellery talents Danish jewellery designers are exceptionally good at creating designs that express character and personality. They create jewellery that complement fashion and which is both fashionable and timeless. Fashion is created by the clothing industry, but jewellery gives you personality, which is why a design should retain its appeal for more than just a few seasons. The initiative includes small emerging brands as well as fine jewellery makers and more commercial names. Brands such as Ole Lynggaard Copenhagen, Georg Jensen, Shamballa and Pandora are accomplished makers of good, storytelling design and are well on their way to positioning themselves as strong players on the international jewellery scene. The more fashion-oriented brands are also fast following suit. “We are not going to create or shape jewellery brands. The talent is already there, whether we are talking of high-end or more fashion-oriented jewellery brands. We provide individual jewellery brands with the opportunity to tell their story and showcase their designs and talent. We create the framework, the rest is up to the designers who are invited,” explains Charlotte Møbjerg Ansel-Henry, highlighting the next generation of jewellery brands. “The more fashion-oriented brands, such as Sif Jakobs Jewellery, Maria Zabel and Maria Black, are the next ones that will be interesting to follow. Each of them has managed to create a bold concept with a recognisable Scandinavian look. These brands are gaining ground in the international markets. We also have some smaller, really talented jewellery brands, such as Josephine Bergsøe, Jane Kønig, Christine Hvelplund, JEWLSCPH, Sophie Bille Brahe and Vibe Harsløf, which are all pioneers on the design front. They help to attract international attention since their design vocabulary is so cutting edge.”

Breaking boarders
Breaking borders Right now the sisters are working on bringing ‘The Jewellery Room’ out to the world. “Denmark offers a unique opportunity and potential to become known for this, so in the autumn we will launch a similar initiative in London so we can help Danish jewellery brands cross borders,” says Pernille. “The ambition is to position Danish jewellery design abroad as the best in the world. And the dream is that this exclusive jewellery universe is to become part of all the interesting fashion weeks worldwide – London, Paris, Berlin and New York – so the Danish jewellery brands have a platform and an entry into these markets,” she concludes.

The Circus Building, One of Copenhagen’s Cultural Icons Cirkusbygningen – et københavnsk kulturikon
Today the Circus Building on Axeltorv in the heart of Copenhagen is the oldest of its kind in Europe. This magnificent Circus Building was inaugurated with an enormous public celebration in Copenhagen on 8 May 1886. Since then, the building has played host to a wide variety of Danish and international circus troupes. From 2003 the spectacular Wallmans Dinner Show has been the Circus Building’s resident entertainment.
A bargain In 1884, Fritz Petersen, a master carpenter, purchased the site on Jernbanegade, next to Axeltorv, for DKK 954,000. The Circus Building was then built. It was designed by the architect H. V. Brinkopff, while the beautiful horseracing frieze, which encircles the outside of the building, was created by the sculptor, Frederik Hammeleff. At that time the Circus Building covered a much bigger site. It stretched right up to Studiestræde and was occupied by stable buildings, which housed all the different circus animals, including elephants, giraffes, and horses. Facing Axeltorv was the Artistcafé, a café, where guests could let their hair down during the intervals. The Artistcafé still exists today. Exactly as it was all those years ago, the café is a popular venue for visitors to the Circus Building and Wallmans prior to the start of the show.
Oprindeligt rådede Cirkusbygningen over et større grundareal.

1914. Fire in Copenhagen In spring 1914 a fire broke out in the Circus Building. Sadly, when the fire brigade arrived, it was too late. It took between three and four hours to extinguish the fire. As a result only the foundations, external walls and portal remained. Fortunately the building was empty during the fire, so there was only material damage. After just one year, in 1915, the Circus Building was rebuilt. This time it was the very first building in Denmark to be constructed with the use of reinforced concrete. The architect, Holger Jacobsen was commissioned to undertake the task, in cooperation with consultant engineer Cock-Clausen. The external walls and frieze of the original building were preserved. During the summer the Circus Building again provided a venue for international and Danish circus troupes, while in winter the building was used for theatre, pantomime and ballet performances.

The fight for the Circus Building Circus Benneweis presented their first show in the Circus Building in 1970, but at the time there was great debate and uncertainty with regard to the future of the building. As a result of the debate about the possible demolition of the Circus Building, at the start of the 1970s Circus Benneweis initiated a campaign for the conservation of the building with the support of active politicians and a united Danish press. The campaign attracted so much popular and political support that in 1974 the City of Copenhagen purchased the building from the ANVA department store. In 1982 the City of Copenhagen began a comprehensive and thorough renovation of the Circus Building with the objective of restoring it to its original appearance. That led to highlighting the distinctive architecture of the Circus Building with the enormous dome, the arched corridors, the festive lobby, the coloured seating and the special circus atmosphere. Meanwhile, everything was given a highly successful, extra touch with the unique colours selected by the architect, Verner Panton. After the restoration both the Circus Building itself and Verner Panton’s colour scheme were listed. This meant that the future of the Circus Building was secured as a significant part of the city’s cultural life. Circus Benneweis continued to perform in the Circus Building right up until 1990.

The Circus Building in the 21st Century After the renovation, the City of Copenhagen outsourced the management of the building, first to Tivoli (1984-1996) and then to Parken (1997-2002). In 2003 the Swedish entrepreneur Hasse Wallman (born 1936) took over the running of the Circus Building. In 2009 Wallmans became part of the entertainment company 2Egroup, who two years later, in 2011, purchased the Circus Building from the City of Copenhagen. So, since 2003 Wallmans have occupied this Copenhagen cultural icon. Today this well-known, popular dinner show, during which guests see a spectacular show, while simultaneously enjoying a delicious 4-course meal, is the Circus Building’s main activity.

Wallmans’ first decade in the Circus Building It is not only the people of Copenhagen and Denmark, who make the journey to the Circus Building. Just as the cast of the show comprises creative and professional dancers, singers and circus stars from many different corners of the world, today’s guests also cosmopolitan, representing an enormous cross section of different countries. In contrast to traditional Danish plays and musicals, Wallmans Dinner Show is international. Every guest, regardless of nationality and language, can be bowled over, entertained and thrilled. In addition to Wallmans Dinner Show, today the Circus Building also plays a major role in Danish and international business communities. The Circus Building can accommodate professional and social events, with room for between 200 and 1,000 guests. This makes it an ideal venue for everything from corporate events, award shows and anniversaries to congresses, conferences and meetings. In 2013/2014 Wallmans are celebrating their first 10 years in Copenhagen with a special anniversary show entitled Sweet Addiction. The anniversary show has received rave reviews from both the Swedish and Danish critics. Last year’s show was seen by a total of almost 75,000 guests, while, since the beginning of 2003, Wallmans Circus Building has entertained more than 750,000 guests.

GANT – Next generation American fashion The basic philosophy is unchanged, reaching back to the Ivy League image of the 1960s. But today GANT is an American legend reshaped for a new generation.
GANT was for decades the quintessence of Yale campus life. The story started back in 1927 when immigrant Bernard Gantmacher moved to New Haven, USA, and founded what was to become one of America’s most influential – and copied – brands. And while preppy college attire has seen a revival in recent years, GANT has undergone a quiet revolution to bring the brand into the loop of 21st century fashion.

158
The locker loop Today, few would think twice about the little loop that sits just under the back collar of many designer shirts. But the locker loop was invented in the 1960s by GANT to allow Yale college students to hang their freshly ironed shirts in the locker without creasing them. This was just one of many small details that made the brand a favourite at Ivy League universities where the attire was available at co-op college wear stores. The Yale Co-op shirt is still the focal point of GANT collections. And the aim is still for every piece of GANT clothing to be genuine, simple and easy to wear, a formula that has guided a wide range of timeless collections.

Christopher Bastin
New chapters Despite its global success, GANT doesn’t dwell on its past, which is all down to one man, creative director Christopher Bastin. A walking encyclopaedia of American sportswear, Bastin has left his unique mark on a range of leading global brands, including Acne, Whyred and H&M. The ever-hardworking designer has also given GANT new direction, which is evident in the brand’s recent collections. And even before he was appointed as chief creative director of GANT, he was responsible for the relaunch of GANT Rugger, his greatest achievement.

160
Stylishly standing out Where GANT is stylish and steadfast in its timeless ethos, GANT Rugger embraces playfulness and humour. The style is young and debonair. In his own words, Christopher Bastin remodelled the GANT Rugger brand for those who dare go a little further. He draws inspiration widely, from Japanese gardening to his great passion second only to fashion, namely food. The GANT Rugger collections echo the stylish simplicity of the early Yaledays yet feature everything from wardrobe basics to innovative designs. GANT Rugger, according Bastin, is about standing out from the crowd in a stylish way.

Man skal ikke klæde sig ud, men…
Wearability Today, we see the GANT legacy worldwide. While the basic philosophy is unchanged, mirroring that of 1960s Yale, GANT today is less about Ivy League college life and more about everyday wearability. Timeless style and quality make and materials are still what guide the brand, as in the days of Gantmacher. Christopher Bastin keeps the legacy alive, while updating each and every detail in every seasonal collection. GANT is an American legend reshaped for a new generation.

Images of Copenhagen By Cæcilie Skovmand
København i billeder
The unique thing about Copenhagen is the Copenhageners. Without them, the city would have no soul – and no world fame. In their books, Journalist Pernille Stensgaard and photojournalist Anne Prytz Schaldemose uncover the city’s 11 different urban districts and their tribal rituals to unearth what binds the natives together in each neighbourhood. Copenhagen is far more diverse than you may think. Christianshavn has a legendary 1970s hippy village. There are designer canal docklands and gentrified hipster hangouts. And every time the authors cross the borders between these neighbourhoods, they discover new urban lifestyles and distinct codes of how to dress, eat and live. Everyone wants to blend in with their district neighbours, who all somehow see themselves as more Copenhagen-core than everyone else in the Danish capital. The books are available in Danish from bookstores in Copenhagen and from www.gyldendal.dk.
Det særlige ved København er københavnerne. Uden dem, intet københavneri. Uden dem, ingen by.

Bang & Olufsen’s brand stores reach Bang & Olufsen level By Mathias Caspersen
How do you give people a sense of magic today? What is a celebrated home entertainment producer to do, now that we have all become empowered users of smartphones and tablets? Can consumers still be wowed in this day and age? The answers become crystal clear when you visit one of Bang & Olufsen’s newly designed stores, which offer a compelling realisation of the company slogan: “Bang & Olufsen exists to move you with enduring magical experiences.” Here Bang & Olufsen products have been given the store ambiance they deserve – and more. Nonetheless, what is by no means apparent when you visit the stores is that the concept was created by a designer whose childhood home was the Thy Camp, a hippie community in North Jutland.
Tangible magic Bang & Olufsen’s new store concept is the brainchild of creative designer Johannes Torpe, who grew up in a time when the brand had become a Danish household name. To him there is a clear connection between his very first Bang & Olufsen design experience as a five-year-old boy – a BeoMaster 1900 – to the new BeoVision Avant TV. “Bang & Olufsen has never been afraid to take chances and think radically different. The eternal mission to find the perfect interplay between sound and design has led to groundbreaking new products and a unique position in the minds of the Danes as well as design lovers worldwide,” explains Torpe. With BeoVision Avant this is reflected in the way the television is tailored to the way we live with TVs today. It’s not just a television set but a veritable cockpit that controls all your home entertainment. And, of course, the sound and design is unbeatable.
Her får man en konkret oplevelse af virksomhedens parole: *Bang & Olufsen exists to move you with enduring magical experiences*.
171
Hotel Magazine no. 26
172
The experience comes first The soul and 89-year Bang & Olufsen corporate history not only come into play with their products. Bold vision and innovation also took centre stage when Torpe and his team designed the new flagship stores. Established interior design dogma and the entrenched Nordic design ethos have been overturned. Here bright, clean-lined ambiances and touch screen environments most often seen in home entertainment store concepts have been replaced by luxurious warm-hued ambiances. The focus is on the experience the products offer their users rather than on the technology itself. This has required new approaches – and a whole army of industry robots.
Hotel Magazine no. 26
Richness and resolve Although there are no visible cables or gizmos in the new Bang & Olufsen stores they are technological powerhouses, nonetheless. They feature walls clad with sound-absorbing foam and silently revolving display plinths operated by industrial robots, the only mechanisms that are precise enough for the job. The choice of materials for the interiors is a far cry from the brightness and lightness of contemporary Scandinavian designs. With smoked oak flooring and brass fittings, the detailing is unique and the overall concept one of richness and resolve. Here, visitors are in for a total experience. You can sink into a sofa and enjoy moments of sublime perfection – and we’re still only talking about the physical environment.
173
Hotel Magazine no. 26
174
Tailored solutions Towards the Kongens Nytorv end of Copenhagen’s main pedestrian street, Strøget, you find the first Bang & Olufsen flagship store to have introduced the new concept. Here you will experience the other twin aspect of what makes the total experience unique: the highly competent and friendly service. The mantra is that employees are there to sell solutions rather than products. Bang & Olufsen offers far more than a mere range of television sets and speakers; they extend the opportunity to tailor your solutions to taste. In short, this is no regular 9-5 salesroom with countertop and cash register. Bang & Olufsen staff will be glad to open the store during off-hours and the back room is designed to offer a leisurely setup to help you find just the right home entertainment solution.

Magi for alle aldre
Magic for all ages You don’t necessarily need to be on the lookout for a total solution to be welcomed with a smile and offered a cup of coffee. Even 10-year-old boys can drop by Østergade No. 18 and enjoy a full demonstration of this potent equipment. Here everyone is welcome to experience the magic.

World-class art and architecture The ARKEN Museum of Modern Art is a monumental landmark surrounded by a manmade beachscape just south of Copenhagen. The museum showcases one of Scandinavia’s finest collections of contemporary art, and the maritime-inspired architecture has gained the museum international renown.
One of Denmark’s newest contemporary art museums, the ARKEN Museum of Modern Art was inaugurated on 15 March 1996 by Her Majesty Queen Margrethe II. Prior to this, years had been spent to ensure that this coastal location in Ishøj just south of Copenhagen would become a significant player in Danish cultural life. The then only 25-year-old architecture student, Søren Robert Lund, surprised the establishment by winning the design competition with a Deconstructivist museum, which resembled a giant beached ship. The ship metaphor is also evident in the huge indoor gallery axis, which is shaped like a hull with tall, heavy doors of iron, exposed rivet-like bolts, metal staircases, dark red hues and resonant acoustics. This distinctive and bold design provides the framework for a large collection of contemporary art and special exhibitions.

To røde tråde løber igennem samlingen.

Hirst, Reyle and Ai Weiwei The collections consist of more than 400 artworks, mainly by Danish, Nordic and international contemporary artists, primarily representing the period after 1990. There are two underpinning themes: one about the human condition of modern man and the other about art that, via new materials, art forms and media, questions the very definition of art. Distinguished exponents of both these subjects are the British enfant terrible Damien Hirst (b. 1965) and the German art-world comet Anselm Reyle (b. 1970). Both are well represented at the museum with entire galleries dedicated to their works. The controversial Chinese artist Ai Weiwei (b. 1957) is represented with one of his major pieces: Circle of Animals / Zodiac Heads from 2010. Danish and Nordic artists, such as Olafur Eliasson, Elmgreen and Dragset, Jeppe Hein and Tal R, are also well represented at the museum.

Hundertwasser the artist and environmentalist
“I want to show how easy it is to create paradise on earth.” So said artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser (1928-2000), whose creative passion was devoted to nature and human emancipation. Over the summer, ARKEN will feature a special exhibition dedicated to the painter, architect and environmentalist, who with his paintings, manifestos and adventurous buildings sought to make the world a better place. He mixed graphic spirals, gold domes and roof garden trees with mundane necessities such as composting toilets, nettle soup and handiwork clothes. He was controversial in his time. Today, with his ideas about green architecture and ecology, he is more topical and current than ever.

Gigantisk legeplads i Danmarks største udstillingsrum
Gigantic playground The museum has dedicated its largest exhibition space to a giant installation – namely the 1968 children’s playground by Danish artist Palle Nielsen (b 1942) entitled The Model where children can jump around in rubber foam, paint and draw, dress up and play music. In 1968, Moderna Museet in Stockholm was turned into one big building playground, or bauspielplatz. For three hectic weeks, tens of thousands of children brought bounce and play to the museum’s main gallery, garnering a great deal of media attention. The building playground was named The Model - A Model for a Qualitative Community and was in equal measure a groundbreaking social experiment, a critique of the art museum as an institution and an architectural artwork. Much has changed since 1968, including the role children enjoy in society, the impact technology has on our everyday lives, the values we associate with a good childhood, and the space and scope we afford children. What is still valid, nonetheless, is the radical notion Palle Nielsen represented that children’s freedom and creativity can lead the way to a better society.

The romance of Skagen In September this year, painters from the 19th century colony of artists in Denmark’s northernmost town, Skagen, will be highlighted at the museum. The exhibition includes 70 major works by Michael Ancher (1849-1927) and P.S. Krøyer (1851-1909) on unique loan from Skagen Museum. The exhibition provides insight into how the two celebrated artists encouraged, challenged and inspired each other over decades in a fruitful dialogue. The paintings include motifs of fishermen, artist parties, everyday life, sunshine, summer and that magical light that is so characteristic of Skagen. 182

Artist’s Island The sea will not only be represented by pictorial art from Skagen. Physically, the sea is set to move closer to the museum over the next year when the surrounding nature is landscaped to create an ‘Artist’s Island’ encompassed by water and with access to the museum via bridges. This will reconcile the museum’s distinctive maritime design with the coastal landscape, offering a unique architectural experience with references to a beached ship or arch replete with inspired modern art.

Place Vendôme – in Copenhagen By Anna Vestergaard
Fra Place Vendôme til Bredgade
For the first time in the 156-year history of Maison Boucheron, the prestigious Parisian brand will be represented in Scandinavia when, in April 2014, their exquisite jewellery will be available in Copenhagen exclusively from Hartmann’s.

Boucheron is one of the most prestigious jewellery houses of Paris, and its iconic jewellery is celebrated for its splendid arrays of gemstones and sculptural details. Reflecting the diversity and values of the historic Maison Boucheron, the jewellery collections appeal to both royal circles and international talents. Beyoncé, Amber Heard and Salma Hayek are among the many who have worn one of Boucheron’s signature designs, namely the Quatre Classique line, a standout collection that with its simplicity embodies artistic detail and technical superiority. The Quatre Classique line was launched in 2004 and offers a rich interpretation of beauty, representing a modern visionary style that is both mystical and elegantly appealing. Quatre Classique consists of four elements: the Clou de Paris, grosgrains, mirror setting and double godron, which can constantly be re-interpreted in new constellations. Modern and bold, the jewels offer a distinctively striking combination of golds and textures that never cease to amaze.

A legend In 1893, Frederic Boucheron was the first jeweller to establish his business on the famous Place Vendôme in Paris. Intrigued by the unique light reflected in the showcased gemstones by the Parisian square from morning to evening, the Place Vendôme boutique became the model for all Boucheron sales locations worldwide. Boucheron’s decision to award Hartmann’s the honour of becoming the exclusive Scandinavian distributor of their exquisite jewellery collections was founded on the unique expertise of the Danish company and the magnificent location of their Copenhagen store on Bredgade, the city’s classic gallery street. “Hartmann’s is one of Scandinavia’s leading jewellers and Ulrik Hartmann is considered Scandinavia’s top diamond expert. His fascination with and knowledge of diamonds and precious stones offers a sound foundation when relating the story of the imaginative and beautiful creations from Maison Boucheron,” states Boucheron. Reflecting the unique 156-year legacy of the Parisian jewellery maker and their ultimate ambitions and exquisite portfolio, the Quatre collection is also joined by other remarkable collections, including Ava, Serpent Bohème and A Collection of Animals. The latter is a jewellery collection celebrated for its tantalising hedgehog and swan motifs adorned with precious gemstones, a collection that has become iconic for the Maison Boucheron.

The International Guild of Realism.”

“My first priority is to create aesthetically interesting paintings and I have always been attracted to the challenge of pictorial realism and learning classical painting techniques. Although the motifs seem carefully considered I am often guided by my intuition when it comes to determining whether a motif will work and when making other choices during the working process. I pursue an understated, mysterious dimension, but this is also best achieved intuitively without a conscious approach. My paintings don’t intentionally need to closely resemble reality. I usually remove distracting elements in the motif or even make major changes if that works better. Besides working as an artist I teach realistic painting and colour theory. I’m a member of the International Guild of Realism.”

HORNSLETH & FRIENDS ART GALLERY Renowned and controversial Danish artist Kristian von Hornsleth always dreamed of having an independent gallery of his own, where he could exhibit art by all his artist friends around the world. This year, the dream came true and Hornsleth & Friends – Contemporary Fine Art Gallery finally opened in the centre of Copenhagen at the über-posh address Bredgade 8. The gallery is managed by Hornsleth’s friend and Persian art dealer Mehran Esmaili. The main vision with the art space is to showcase wake-up artists and radical, curious and critical contemporary art. As Hornsleth puts it: “Most art shows around here bore me to death and do not seem to question the cultural and political abuse of the average person. I hope we can challenge our guests visually and intellectually, and push them to the border where they either run away screaming or stay with us forever.” This recent painting by Hornsleth, entitled Great Love, is an ongoing experiment where he constantly, almost hysterically tries to push the borders of colour and shapes. 150x150cm oil on canvas.

“I have worked with my art for over 20 years, with materials such as iron, glass, clay and canvas. What I seek to achieve is an interplay between raw purity and delicate harmony. Adding to this is a very limited palette of colours. The story I aim to achieve revolves around everyday life or that of tomorrow. I work as much in outdoor spaces with my sculptures as with wall-hanging canvases. To me it’s a lot about what happens in context with the artwork, or the feeling that my work can bring to the room. And last but not least, the viewing eyes that complete the story.”

CECILIE WESTH Cecilie Westh’s works depict the human condition, the way we stage-manage our life and our underlying emotions. They portray the masks we put on and take off in our effort to fit in, masks that can be interchanged to reflect who or what we aspire to be. Her works are portrayals of the complexity of humankind, the beauty of imperfection, the quirky and the whimsical. Her characters lend themselves to the public eye with proportions that transcend accepted ideals of beauty. They live in their own world but engage in small, everyday challenges and situations, which are rendered with humour and poetry. Cecilie Westh’s work reflects a woman’s view of herself. She turns her thoughts inside out. For instance – are we humans for sale? Not necessarily for money, but we have sold our souls to society and to the things that are expected of us and to the role we have taken upon ourselves to fulfil – or for different reasons have adopted – in our yearning for the easy life. And so! What came first – the chicken or the egg, the hen, surrogate mother or the housewife? She plays with horns and wings, good and evil, with a battle that is to be fought, perhaps just in the kitchen or perhaps in our inner heart. She toys with global ideas, situations that many of us recognise from real life and with familiar setups that we perhaps see in ourselves.
