THE HIRSCHSPRUNG COLLECTION Hirschsprung is an art museum in a class of its own located in Copenhagen. It stands as a unique presentation of Danish art from the 19th and early 20th centuries, spanning the period from the Danish Golden Age to the Skagen painters and the Modern Breakthrough. Containing a selection of the most important works by masters such as Eckersberg, Købke, Krøyer and Hammershøi, the Hirschsprung Collection offers a representative selection of paintings from one of the most outstanding eras of Danish art history. The museum building is a beautiful example of the neo-classical style, where the interior, with its subdued colours and small galleries, creates a special and intimate atmosphere. The museum is in the Østre Anlæg park in central Copenhagen, and is today listed as a building of special importance. The museum is built around the personal art collection of Heinrich Hirschsprung, a tobacco manufacturer, who donated his collection to the Danish state in 1902.

Kongefamilien forlod Frederiksberg Slot i 1852. I 1869 overtog Hærens Officersskole slottet. Concierge FREDERIKSBERG HAVE

Photo: Torben Eskerod

FREDERIKSBERG GARDEN At the main entrance, visitors are officially received by Frederik VI, a former king much beloved by his people, so one is fully aware of entering his garden, where he used to be rowed about on the canals saluting his subjects. The statue’s pedestal has the following inscription: ‘Here he felt happy in the midst of loyal people’. These days, Svendsen’s Boat Service (Svendsens Bådfart) will do the rowing for you. Boat tours operate all summer. The boat tour will give you a good idea of the vastness of the gardens. On the tour you will see the Frederiksberg Palace, towering on a hill top, many lovely little bridges, and the Chinese Pavilion that was erected in 1799 as a Royal teahouse. For centuries, the Frederiksberg Gardens has been a favourite outing spot for Copenhageners. Many bring their picnic baskets for lunch and top off the day by visiting the Copenhagen Zoo in the northernmost end of the gardens.

Teater.

THE LITTLE MERMAID At Langelinie Pier you will find one of Copenhagen’s most important tourist attractions: The Little Mermaid. The statue from 1913 was originally a gift to the city donated by brewer Carl Jacobsen. The statue is made of bronze, is 125 cm tall and weighs 175 kg. The story of the Little Mermaid is from writer Hans Christian Andersen’s fairy tale by the same name, a story about the unhappy mermaid who wish she goes on shore.

THE ROYAL DANISH THEATRE The Royal Danish Theatre has since 1748 been located by one of Copenhagen’s main squares, Kongens Nytorv. Over the years, many famous people have visited the theatre, including Danish philosopher Søren Kierkegaard, who saw a performance of Mozart’s Don Giovanni. The Royal Danish Theatre today consists of three main venues: the new waterside Opera House, the new Royal Danish Playhouse and the Old Stage, which now mainly features ballet performances. The Royal Danish Ballet is one of the world’s most renowned companies and the caretaker of a unique Bournonville tradition, which is characterised by refined mimetic narrative and effortless ease. The Bournonville legacy is the backbone of the Royal Danish Ballet’s repertoire. Nonetheless, the company also has an eye for contemporary choreography and features a wide and varied repertoire of high artistic merit.

THE OPERA HOUSE The Royal Danish Opera is Scandinavia’s leading opera company with a long tradition and history. In 2005, the Royal Danish Opera inaugurated its new waterside Opera House in Copenhagen, which has given the company a fitting new venue in which to develop its great artistic potential.

NYHAVN During summer, Nyhavn is the perfect place to enjoy a spot of al fresco dining. Or, if you prefer, you can do like the locals and buy a beer from a nearby store and rest your feet at the quayside. Den Nye Havn, ‘the New Haven’, was originally a busy commercial port where ships from all over the world would dock. The area teemed with sailors, ladies of pleasure, pubs and alehouses. ‘Den Nye Havn’ eventually changed its name to ‘Nyhavn’ (‘Newhaven’), and gradually the beautiful old slanted houses were renovated and classy restaurants started popping up. No. 9, Nyhavn, is the oldest house in the area dating back to 1681. The design of the house has not been altered since that time.

KAREN BLIXEN MUSEUM Karen Blixen´s private home is open to the public. The rooms are almost exactly as Karen Blixen decorated and arranged them, giving a vivid impression of the writer’s day-to-day surroundings. Some of the furniture came from the farm in Africa, including Denys Finch Hatton’s favourite chair and the chest that Karen Blixen’s steward, Farah, gave her. A number of the old stoves in the rooms came from Danish manor houses once owned by Karen Blixen’s relatives A small room has been converted into a gallery showing Karen Blixen’s African portrait paintings , charcoal drawings from her time as a student at the Academy of Art and some pastels. In the large drawing room Karen Blixen used to sit with her guests in front of the marble chimney-piece and it was here that she made her popular radio broadcasts during the 1950s and gave some of her television interviews. There are fresh flower arrangements in all the rooms, in the same style as those with which Karen Blixen decorated the house.

FREDERIKSBORG CASTLE Frederiksborg Palace is situated on three islets in the castle lake in Hillerød, north of Copenhagen. The palace, which is surrounded by the beautiful Frederiksborg Palace Garden, was built in the Dutch Renaissance style at the beginning of the 1600s by King Christian 4. The palace was built in Dutch Renaissance style by King Christian 4 in the 17th century. After a devastating fire in the middle of the 19th century, the palace was rebuilt by the owner of the Carlsberg Breweries, J. C. Jacobsen. The Museum of National History at Frederiksborg Palace exhibits the history of Denmark and houses a considerable collection of portraits, historical paintings and modern art. At the museum you will find portraits of both Johan Friedrich Struensee and Queen Caroline Mathilde made by the artist Jens Juel, as well as other paintings by artists like Karel van Mander, Wilhelm Marstrand, P.S. Krøyer and Niels Strøbæk. A new permanent exhibition shows the history of the castle and the museum - including parts of the castle, previously closed to the public. Here you can see original sculptures and decorations from before the fire in 1859. The palace chapel survived when the rest of the palace burnt down in 1859 and today it stands as in Christian 4’s time. The Palace Garden was laid out as a romantic landscaped garden. In the garden you will find King Frederik 2’s small Bath House Palace (Badstueslot) which is occasionally used by the Royal Family for hunt lunches. The grounds also include the baroque style garden that was recreated in 1996 according to the original drawings by J.C. Krieger from 1725. Especially worth noting are the royal monograms executed in boxwood, the historical flowers and the festive cascades.

Skovshoved Hotel is the story of a treasured seaside sanctuary dating back several hundred years. The edifice itself is from 1660 and originally served travellers making their way along the coastal road and meandering through the fishing village of Skovshoved. The hotel has had several famous owners over the years. In 2002, ownership was assumed by Tofa and Ivan Nadelmann, and soon after Skovshoved Hotel underwent total refurbishment in tune with its heritage and soul. Today, the hotel is an architectural gem close to one of Copenhagen’s best beaches and complete with its own jetty. Stylish interiors offer a comfortable cosmopolitan air, replete with dark-hued furniture and hardwood floors, beautiful kilims, original art and large soft-seated sofas.

Få dit helt eget bryllup

Personalised weddings The many weddings at Skovshoved Hotel means that the dedicated staff knows exactly what it takes for the event to become a uniquely memorable experience. But it never becomes routine, says Ralf Kristensen, Sales and Marketing Manager at Skovshoved Hotel. “All weddings are different. And it’s always a great experience to be given the privilege of arranging the big day for a wedding couple. Currently, many people are looking for nuptial experiences that are out of the ordinary, with small surprises thrown in. That’s why we bring all our expertise into play to tailor each wedding to every individual couple. It’s a long process, but it gives the best result.” A wedding at Skovshoved Hotel can either be held in the intimate Glass Salon or in the large Banquet Hall on the hotel’s upper floor, which offers open sea views and a lovely adjacent terrace. “We compose the menu in close consultation with the bride and groom based on seasonal produce. And for a sample of what the big day will bring, we offer them a complimentary dinner around one month in advance of the wedding,” says Ralf Kristensen.

Open sea views Skovshoved Hotel has 22 rooms, all of which feature interior designs by the Aarhus studio of architect Michael Mammen. Appointed throughout with elegant furnishings and inspiring works of art, there is every good reason to invite wedding guests to stay the night after the grand wedding day. “More and more often, we see newlyweds spending the night at the hotel and enjoying breakfast with the guests the next day. It’s an incredibly cosy way to round off the event, and it also gives you the opportunity to open your wedding presents, which you seldom have time for on the day,” says Ralf Kristensen. Naturally, the Bridal Suite offers sea views, and what could be more romantic than waking to a glorious morning and the glittering sea?

Timeless Beauty

Tidløst smykkedesign

The preferred jewellery studio of some of Scandinavia’s most captivating celebrity women, Ole Lynggaard Copenhagen celebrates the company’s 50th anniversary this year with the new Snake collection and a dazzling catwalk presentation in association with the Elle Style Awards

A family run company Together with his family, Ole Lynggaard has built a fine jewellery brand, recognised and loved by women all over the world. Charlotte Lynggaard, daughter of Ole Lynggaard, who is a goldsmith and designer like her father, joined the company in 1992, and Søren Lynggaard, son of Ole Lynggaard, has been CEO since 2003. Together with their spouses they run the company, which has more than 100 staff members – all of them carefully chosen and employed as part of the family business. The family values are reflected in every corner of the company, creating passion in all aspects of working with the valuable jewellery. The whole feel to the company is indeed very down to earth, giving employees and visitors a feeling of being home.

Nordeuropas største I 2013 fejrer Ole Lynggaard Copenhagen 50-års jubilæum.

116

Scandinavia’s largest In 2013, Ole Lynggaard Copenhagen celebrates its 50th anniversary. Situated at the same address since 1963, the company has expanded steadily and the small workshop has literally taken over the street, including neighbouring houses and rear buildings. Most Ole Lynggaard Copenhagen jewellery is still produced in the very workshop where Ole Lynggaard started his business 50 years ago. And with its more than 40 goldsmiths, Ole Lynggaard Copenhagen is Northern Europe’s largest fine jewellery workshop. Having the production so close to the family company’s designers allows Charlotte and Ole Lynggaard to work closely together with their highly skilled staff in handcrafting their unique designs. Sketches and models are constantly studied and explored. And with a true craftsman’s dedication and skill the designs come to life.

Jubilæumskollektionen Snakes

Snakes – the anniversary collection To mark the 50th anniversary of Ole Lynggaard Copenhagen, the founder has designed an anniversary collection, Snakes. By looking back in time to a visit to Cairo’s Egyptian Museum in the 1960s, Ole Lynggaard created a full collection of fine jewellery, consisting of earrings and pendants, etc. The latest addition to Snakes is a modern and very sensual gold bracelet. The collection has already been featured on several fashion magazine covers, which is, we must add, the perfect way to celebrate a great man and designer.

Kvalitetsbevidste kvinder

Strong personalities The quality-conscious women who have helped to express the unique universe and collections from Ole Lynggaard Copenhagen include Connie Nielsen, Lene Nystrøm and most recently a long-term partnership has been forged with international supermodel Helena Christensen – all Scandinavian-born women with a strong international appeal. Through the years, Ole Lynggaard Copenhagen has carefully chosen to work with profiles and confident women who have achieved remarkable results in their lives. About the partnership with Helena Christensen, designer Charlotte Lynggaard says, “We feel that Helena Christensen matches our thoughts and values. Helena is a mature woman with power and style, she is a natural beauty and furthermore she is sexy. She is a woman of values, cares for the environment and has an overall distinguished social consciousness. As a woman, Helena knows what she wants, which path to choose and she is not afraid of challenging herself should new possibilities arise.”

Anniversary show For many years, Charlotte Lynggaard toyed with the idea of expanding the jewellery universe to encompass the whole woman from top to toe. Now, she has seized the opportunity to create this complete concept in a dream of a show, where jewellery, dresses and scenography fuse together to form an ethereal symbiosis. For over a year, Charlotte has created innumerable sketches and ideas for her fashion designs, which now finally come to fruition on the catwalk. Seamstresses have been working overtime to ensure all 20 dresses, jackets and coats live up to Charlotte’s high standards, and the designer has also been intensely involved throughout all the stages of the process. The collection includes elements of crochet details, created from old traditional patterns, and the finest of furs complement the exclusive silks and antique laces. The focus is on the craftsmanship, and every single detail is carefully inspected, with the exact same attention given to the jewellery at the goldsmith workshop in Hellerup, Copenhagen, where the family company is based. Every single piece of jewellery has been specifically included as details of the overall look in the fashion show, and they stem partly from the collections created over the 50 years of Ole Lynggaard Copenhagen’s designs as well as from completely new, unique jewellery ideas. The show will be featured in association with the ELLE Style Awards in Copenhagen in May.

Frida Kahlo - A Life in Art Frida Kahlo - Et Liv I Kunsten Frida Kahlo is the world’s most famous female artist. Nothing less. By turning the spotlight on herself as the subject matter of her art, Kahlo expanded the perception of the female identity in sharp exchange with contemporary currents in modernist visual art.

Frida Kahlo er verdenshistoriens mest berømte kvindelige billedkunstner. Intet mindre.

The ARKEN Museum of Modern just south of Copenhagen features a highlight exhibition of art by Frida Kahlo (1907-1954). FRIDA KAHLO - A LIFE IN ART shows how the artist staged and styled her identity through her art, which is often perceived to directly represent her colourful personal life. With her self-portraits and other depictions of her dramatic life, Kahlo examined the boundary between artwork and biography, between art and life. Nonetheless, her art often looks beyond personal experiences; it is mercilessly revealing yet also highly staged.

Fridamania

Fridamania Frida Kahlo’s distinct appearance – with her expressive eyebrows, vivid costumes and upswept hairstyles – have made her as iconic a painter as Salvador Dalí and Pablo Picasso. Her iconic self-portraits have helped fuel a cult-like following, and ‘Fridamania’, widely reflected in Western popular culture, has also been fanned by Salma Hayek’s biopic Frida. Kahlo’s story is just as inspiring today and her investigations into her identity are similarly just as sharp now as they were at the early twentieth century. Frida Kahlo began her artistic career in the 1920s when Mexico City was the scene for some of the greatest artistic and political figures of the times, influential figures who were preoccupied with revolutionary communist ideology and the seismic shifts in artistic expression. In their wild embrace, Kahlo met Mexico’s greatest artist Diego Rivera, and they married in 1929. This marked the beginning of her liberated, avant-garde prominence, not only in Mexico but also in the United States. As a member of the international cultural elite, Kahlo dedicated herself to her art, which in confluence with artistic and political currents of the day resonated with contemporary investigations into identity and originality.

Frida Kahlo, The Bride Who Becomes Frightened When She Sees Life Opened, 1943. Photo © 2013 Banco de México Diego Rivera, Frida Kahlo Museums Trust, Mexico, D.F. / billedkunst.dk

Photographic eye Frida Kahlo’s paintings are pivotal to our understanding of the artist, although in recent years a large number of remarkable images have also reached the public, bearing clear witness to her use of self-fashioning photography. These photographs, often taken by her changing male and female lovers, further inflected the symbolic visual grammar of her paintings: Mexican costumes, sophisticated hairstyles, heavy pre-Columbian jewellery and not least her fearlessly arching eyebrows. These elements are distinct characteristics of the artist in all her self-portrayals. And these were by no means random ‘selfies’. They virtually all reflect a carefully staged composition, which like her paintings are heavily invested with meaning. Frida Kahlo became a significant artist both at home and abroad. Through paintings, photographs and by her mere presence, Frida Kahlo became a living symbol of Mexico’s past and future and in a universal quest for identity. She died far too young in 1954, but ‘Frida’ the iconic artist and her art are experiencing an ever-growing interest. From 7 September, Kahlo’s works will be on display at the ARKEN Museum of Modern Art.

Hungarian photographer Nickolas Muray (1892-1965) immigrated to America in 1913. He quickly became a celebrity photographer, working for Vogue magazine that featured the image of Frida Kahlo on a white bench. Muray met Frida during a visit to Mexico in 1931 and they embarked on a tempestuous love affair that lasted 10 years. Muray had at that point just divorced his second wife and Frida Kahlo had married Diego Rivera only a few years earlier. Their relationship survived both Muray’s third marriage and Kahlo’s divorce from Diego Rivera and even their second marriage. Muray was the photographer who took most images of Frida Kahlo and she loved his portraits. They wrote countless letters to each other and maintained a close friendship, which ended only with Frida Kahlo’s death in 1954.

Kasper Salto

When design is ingrained in your DNA

Kasper Salto has established himself as one of Denmark’s most successful contemporary furniture designers. His comfortable and ultra-sleek chairs have caught the imagination of design lovers worldwide.

The grandson of famous Danish ceramicist Axel Salto, design is deeply ingrained in Kasper Salto’s DNA. Axel Salto was a seminal figure on the Danish art scene in the early to mid 1900s, and his ceramics are now in high demand worldwide. Kasper Salto has never been shy of walking in the footsteps of his legendary grandfather and decided at a young age to become a cabinetmaker, adding a contemporary sense of modern living to the family tradition.

Silver Medal and design awards At just 21, Kasper Salto became a fully-qualified cabinetmaker in 1988 and received the first of what was to become a plethora of awards, namely a Silver Medal for his apprenticeship test piece. In 1994, Salto also graduated from the Danish Design School. And until 1998, while employed at Rud Thygesen, one of the most influential Danish furniture designers, he regularly tutored at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts. At the Rud Thygesen studio he met Peter Stærk, whose friendship has had a strong impact on Salto’s professional career. In 1997, Kasper Salto designed the Runner chair for Peter Stærk, which quickly became a success both at home and abroad. Salto opened his own studio in Copenhagen’s Christianshavn neighbourhood in 1998. He relocated his studio to Sankt Peders Stræde 22 in central Copenhagen in 2006, where he has worked with a number of leading furniture and lighting manufacturers, including Fritz Hansen, Lightyears, DubaB8, Engelbrecht Furniture, Stærk Design and Nemo Lighting in Italy. He has received a number of honours for his work, including the Knud V. Engelhardt Memorial Award in 2005, the Finn Juhl Prize in 2010 and the Danish Design Prize 2010 for his NAP chair.

Fremtidssikrede møbler

Future-forward furniture Denmark is famed for its furniture design. Indeed, so much so that the nation’s design innovators have been all but eclipsed by the great legends of Denmark’s design tradition. However, Kasper Salto has never lingered in the shadows. The industrious designer drew a large following at a young age for contemporising the pure-lined Nordic design tradition with an emphasis on eco-sustainable materials and a relaxed sense of pragmatism – values that are epitomised in his three biggest successes, the Runner, Ice and NAP chairs.

150

Runner (1997) It took Kasper Salto just three months to create the Runner stacking chair, which since its launch in 1997 has received a host of honours. His vision to create a multifunctional, versatile chair had one overarching aim – comfort. Kasper Salto said at the time: “What I have in mind is offering a way to change your sitting position without compromising on comfort, which is why the chair allows you to change your position from left to right and on to a more relaxed back posture, which is nice if you have just eaten or simply need to relax your body.” The very same year the chair was designed it received an award from the Danish lifestyle magazine Bo Bedre. Another two honours followed the year after, namely the Won Spectrum Award and an award from Moderni, which in 1999 were joined by a two additional accolades, an ID Prize and a G-prize.

Ice (2002)

Ice (2002) In 2002, Kasper Salto became the first designer commissioned to create a series of chairs for indoor or outdoor use for the illustrious Danish furniture manufacturer Fritz Hansen, a company that has over the years featured products by some of Denmark’s top designers. The result was the Ice chair, which combines the virtues of classic comfort with a future-forward choice of materials. The frame is made of natural anodized aluminium, and the backrest, patterned to resemble the veins of a leaf, along with the seat are made of ASA plastic, which is a sturdy and sustainable choice.

152

NAP (2010) NAP stands for ‘Normal’, ‘Active’ and ‘Passive’ and refers to the various seating positions Kasper Salto had in mind. But naturally, as the name implies, it’s also tempting to conclude that the chair will let you enjoy a snooze. NAP has attracted international attention and reflects the very essence of Nordic design: Simplicity, functionality and attention to detail. The ribs on the seat are designed to ensure that you don’t slide off, which is often the case with shell chairs. The chair is both sturdy and stackable, but as a standalone piece it also offers sculptural quality, attracting your attention and evoking a desire to try it out. NAP has the potential to become a classic and has been acknowledged with two of Denmark’s top design awards, the Danish Design Prize 2010/2011 and the Finn Juhl Prize in 2010.

MUW

MUW ( Man, Unisize, Woman) Recently, Kasper Salto, in collaboration with his wife, textile designer Rikke Salto, has designed a unisex everyday watch for Rosendahl Timepieces. The watch and its 44mm dial are rendered with a sleek Scandinavian look contrasted by an innovative Velcro strap. Arguably more conspicuous than the ultra-minimalist timepiece itself, the versatile Velcro strap is indeed an eye-catcher. The watch can be worn on the wrist, around the neck or be sported as a pocket watch.

Wild thing Unleash the beast: The new 4-door coupé from MercedesBenz is a landmark design concept - and it oozes aerodynamics that will take your breath away. The first encounter was determined by fate. Last summer, the CLA remained one of Mercedes-Benz’s best-kept secrets. The car was actually supposed to be kept behind closed doors, but the prototype still stood in the very back corner of a big room. A quick glance made me think of a predator, and since then this picture has stuck in my mind - linked with a desire to investigate the matter further. Several months later, I described this brief encounter to Gorden Wagener, Head of Design at Mercedes-Benz, to which he replied with a satisfied smile, “Well, we’ve obviously done our job well - it’s just the reaction a good design should get. The ability to bewitch, bring dreams to life and make our cars desirable - not only on the very first encounter, but over and over again every day.” My second encounter with the CLA lasted somewhat longer, and my good first impression was confirmed. It appears very familiar, yet seems to be quite different: The grille with the large Mercedes star and the striking chrome pins which shine as bright as diamonds, headlights with the typical glow of yellow and white LED’s - these are the typical facial features of the new A-Class; young, dynamic, progressive.

Ung, dynamisk, progressiv.

Elegance og dynamik

Elegance and dynamics The bonnet accentuates the independent profile and the two extra power domes emphasise that this car is quite unique. The car’s genes are a mix of the unmistakable features of the new compact class and a number of very individual attributes. Gorden Wagener speaks of elegance and dynamic, of tradition and progress and about senses and sensuality. Features that don’t really go together, but fit very naturally into the car’s characteristic appearance and radiate something quite special. The concept of the car also sounds a little contradictory: A coupé with four doors. Mercedes-Benz first came with this idea in 2004, when they presented a model that combined the elegance of a coupé with the comfort and functionality of a saloon car: the CLS. The role model for a new type of car. Fascinatingly beautiful and fascinatingly different. Mercedes-Benz now transfers this fascination to the compact class, where the new coupé formulates today’s mode of expression.

Drop Shape – the new design “Previously, our model design was characterized by a forward-facing wedge shape, where now it’s all about a dynamic line-formed flow towards the rear,” explains Wagener and demonstrates with his hand the progress of the so-called “Dropping Line”, an important feature of the new style. This line extends from the front wing to the rear door, with a slight curve towards the rear wheel. The counterpart is called “Balance Line”: This line divides the lower area of the doors and extends upward toward the rear axle. “It gives an interesting “Drop Shape”, a sort of teardrop silhouette,” states Wagener about the design. “Your gaze is drawn from the front of the car towards the rear, where our models now have their optical powerhouse. Powerful proportions defined by the long bonnet, the long wheelbase, the short rear end and the distinctive rear passenger compartment, enhances the new lines. Seen in this way, the design stands as a work of art on wheels: The arched, softly rounded surfaces take on a whole new emotional expressive power thanks to the tight lines.

Aerodynamic world record ust like the compact coupé, the shape of future Mercedes-Benz models will be even more stylish, sensual and progressive, promises the Head of Design. “An aura of glamour will surround our cars, and the fascination of the beauty will be further enhanced.” The CLA is just the beginning. The new 4-door coupé is convincing, not only through its mode of expression, but it is also unsurpassed in terms of the aerodynamic features. Thanks to the low flow resistance the model has taken the world record for production cars. Truly a “beast” - and with style. ENGINE / PERFORMANCE 2.1 litre four-cylinder diesel engine, 125 kW (170 hp) at 3400-4000 rpm, maximum torque 350 Nm at 1400-3400 rpm ACCELERATION 0–100 kmt in 8.2 s TOP SPEED 230 kmt

Ingrid Bugge visits the Royal Ballet art photographer

ingrid bugge

Art photographer Ingrid Bugge is currently touring Denmark with her photo exhibition that portrays dancers from the Royal Danish Ballet. A number of portraits from Ingrid Bugge’s art project The Inner Space of Ballet will be featured this summer along a 30x3 metre wall in Kongens Nytorv central Copenhagen. The intention is to capture intense moments from ballet performances and thus offer new ways of portraying the soul and nerve of ballet. In May 2014, Artistic Director of the Royal Danish Ballet Nikolaj Hübbe will preside over the opening of Ingrid Bugge’s photo exhibition at KunstCentret Silkeborg Bad, where about 50 photographic works will represent the power and poetry of the Royal Danish Ballet. An art book will be published to coincide with the exhibition documenting Ingrid Bugge’s work, reflecting on the photographic process of following the company. The book will also feature articles by Nikolaj Hübbe, ballet critic Erik Ashengreen and art photography curator Lars Schwander. Ingrid Bugge’s art project offers an abstract representation of the Royal Danish Ballet during the 2012-13 season. The artworks are photographic collages with stylistic reference to traditional pictorial art.

162

Kunstprojektet er Ingrid Bugges abstraktion over Den Kongelige Ballet i 2012-13.

Portrait of Georg Jensen in the 1920’ies

Hotel Magazine no. 24

Danish Luxury Dansk luksus

With a history spanning more than 100 years, Georg Jensen is a Danish luxury brand representing superior quality craftsmanship and timeless design with lifestyle products ranging from hollowware to watches, jewellery and design for the home. The man behind the brand – Georg Jensen – was a silversmith and sculptor far ahead of his time in both skills and trade. Georg Jensen was a master craftsman who believed anything was possible. With exquisite craftsmanship and a deep appreciation of the arts, Jensen pushed the boundaries of silver design, challenging the natural elements to create shapes with perfect symmetry. Born in 1866 in Raadvaad, a small settlement north of Copenhagen, Jensen quickly found his calling. After completing his education as a sculptor in 1892 at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, he spent the ensuing years travelling the world to hone his craft. Initially working with ceramics, he turned to silver in 1904, opening his own small studio in Bredgade, central Copenhagen. Here he mastered his profession, gaining widespread recognition for his elegant art deco jewellery. Georg Jensen stores opened across Europe – in Berlin, Stockholm, Paris and London, and in 1924 the first US store in New York was established. Jensen continued to build his legacy, his life’s work becoming a globally recognised brand, until his death at the age of 69 in 1935. Today, his undying spirit and unique sense of quality and craftsmanship lives on and continues to define the Georg Jensen brand. The silversmith studio is now located in Frederiksberg, employing 26 working silversmiths.

Each piece reflects Georg Jensen’s enduring commitment to quality and form: Ibe Dahlquist’s enchanting bangle gently wraps around the wrist, its open sterling silver form undulating on its orbit. The stunning simplicity of Vivianna Torun Bülow-Hübe’s nature-inspired bangle is manifested in sterling silver, set with polished black agate, cornelian or green agate; and Astrid Fog’s exotic sterling silver bangle and neck ring hold cascading sterling silver droplets, which fall flamboyantly from polished elliptical silver. The exclusive collection is available by order only in selected flagship stores from March 2013. Visit the Georg Jensen Copenhagen flagship store on Strøget at Amagertorv 4.

Oh Land and Georg Jensen Georg Jensen, celebrated worldwide for its distinguished Danish design and quality craftsmanship, has launched a spring/summer campaign photographed by acclaimed British fashion photographer Tim Walker. The campaign portrays Danish singer-songwriter and it girl Oh Land styled with jewellery from Georg Jensen’s 2013 collections. Singer Oh Land (aka Nanna Øland Fabricius) was originally trained as a ballet dancer, but had to end her career early due to an injury. She turned to embrace music and has taken the industry by storm with her laidback Nordic electro-pop. With a cool, playful attitude, Oh Land is a style icon both in her native country Denmark as well as in her current hometown, New York City, where she enjoys a meteoric career.

Danish guitarist and composer Kaare Norge is also a visual artist. “When I paint, I often hear musical tones when I see colours, and when I express music, I often associate tones with colours.” In other words, music and visual art are closely connected in Kaare Norge’s world. Kaare’s vivid paintings are abstract and inspired by nature. The materials are oil on canvas and he always uses a spatula to achieve a tactile look. His motifs are from Denmark and from his many international tours as a maestro of the classical guitar. A self-taught painter, Kaare Norge has 20 years of experience and has exhibited widely in Denmark. He aims to reach an even broader audience with his visual art and to challenge new frontiers.

CECILIE WESTH Cecilie Westh’s works depict the human condition, the way we stage-manage our life and our underlying emotions. They portray the masks we put on and take off in our effort to fit in, masks that can be interchanged to reflect who or what we aspire to be. Her works are portrayals of the complexity of humankind, the beauty of imperfection, the quirky and the whimsical. Her characters lend themselves to the public eye with proportions that transcend accepted ideals of beauty. They live in their own world but engage in small, everyday challenges and situations, which are rendered with humour and poetry. Cecilie Westh’s work reflects a woman’s view of herself. She turns her thoughts inside out. For instance – are we humans for sale? Not necessarily for money, but we have sold our souls to society and to the things that are expected of us and to the role we have taken upon ourselves to fulfil – or for different reasons have adopted – in our yearning for the easy life. And so! What came first – the chicken or the egg, the hen, surrogate mother or the housewife? She plays with horns and wings, good and evil, with a battle that is to be fought, perhaps just in the kitchen or perhaps in our inner heart. She toys with global ideas, situations that many of us recognise from real life and with familiar setups that we perhaps see in ourselves.

COCO ELECTRA

Coco Electra is a prolific and sensitive artistic soul who brings order to her imaginative world. The atmosphere in her paintings is romantic, melancholic and remote – yet also intimately reflects the artist’s personal presence, drawing on hard-rock antics. Coco Electra loves Chinese ink drawings – their universe of beautiful birds and flowers, which create a sense of space on an otherwise plane void. Many young Chinese artists subscribe to the Pop Surrealist movement, complete with big-eyed Mangas and sharp-lined contours. Coco Electra’s career as a visual artist soon took shape after she made up her mind to pursue the arts. Her background as a freelance tattoo artist has given her all the right technical skills.
