A FIVESTAR HOME By Mathias Caspersen
ET HJEM MED FEM STJERNER
The design is exceptional at Hotel SKT. PETRI, and so is the location. The gastronomic offerings appeal to even the most jaded of Copenhagen diners, but what has truly made the hotel a hot ticket internationally is the unique dedication of its staff. A few years ago, Condé Nast Traveller’s hotlist of the ‘World’s 1000 Best Hotels’ only had one Scandinavian entry, the five-star Hotel SKT. PETRI. “This former 1930s department store is proof positive that a big hotel doesn’t have to feel impersonal (…) Impeccable service from a friendly young staff has already made the SKT. PETRI a lure,” the jury citation said. These must have been sweet and welcoming words for the hotel where they believe that travellers should only feel like guests the first time they visit the hotel. The second time, they should feel at home. SKT. PETRI breaks with the traditional, anonymous vision of a hotel and offers an added dimension that originates from the hotel staff and their heartfelt dedication, which you as a guest will sense. Kun én skandinavisk kandidat slap gennem nåleøjet for nogle år siden, da tidsskriftet Condé Nast Traveller besluttede at finde verdens 1000 bedste hoteller: det femstjernede københavnerhotel SKT. PETRI. Ordene må have lunet på hotellet.

DESIGNED FOR COMFORT
Aiding the staff in raising the bar of hospitality in Copenhagen are the hotel interiors, which are designed to make guests feel at home. Comfort is the guiding principle, which you sense the very moment you let yourself drop onto one of the quality beds, which are supplied by Jensen, a Norwegian bed manufacturer that is neither the largest nor the most highprofile brand on the market but nevertheless supplies the very best beds the hotel could find. Then there are the armchairs. SKT. PETRI chose a design by Gubi Olsen, the man behind the prize-winning Danish design company GUBI. Not only does the chair offer visual edge but also the very best of seating comfort. And that’s the way SKT. PETRI has been furnished throughout – with unconventional choices and deep-dish comfort in mind.

HOTEL MAGAZINE NO. 28
IN THE HEART OF TOWN
The hotel interiors are finely tuned to the exceptional modernist architecture of the now heritage listed building from 1933. A former department store, the building was designed by legendary Danish architect Wilhelm Lauritzen. The skybridging windows in the lobby and restaurant offer views to the old Copenhagen ‘Latin Quarter’. Within easy walking distance from the hotel you find many of the city’s major attractions, such as the 350-year-old Round Tower, Copenhagen City Hall Square, and not least the neighbouring 500-year-old church of SKT. PETRI (Saint Peter) that lends its name to the hotel. History and heritage aren’t the only attractions of the area. Copenhagen’s best cafés, boutiques and department stores are just around the corner in the quaint medieval streets, which along with the old university, local theatres and leafy parks make this one of the city’s most inspiring areas.

PETRI, 24 timer i døgnet.

MORNING, NOON, EVENING – AND NIGHT
The hotel itself adds flavour to the neighbourhood. “SKT. PETRI has become a magnet for artists, designers, musicians and other creative types who drop by and mingle,” Condé Nast Traveller noted. The ambiance and the friendly service have made the hotel’s café, restaurant and bar popular eateries and watering holes. BRØL is Copenhagen’s new bread bakery and beer bar. We have a wide range of specialty beers from microbreweries, organic bread, sandwiches and pizza that you have not tasted before. And at the laidback restaurant, CENTRAL KITCHEN, offering modern-day diners a high quality and easygoing dining experience in an ambiance of Nordic simplicity. At Bar Rouge friendly mixologists serve some the city’s most luscious cocktails and on selected evenings hotshot deejays turn up the beat. With its 24-hour offerings, there is a genuine sense of easygoing cool about SKT. PETRI.

FEELS LIKE HOME, ONLY BETTER
Hotel SKT. PETRI was recently acquired by Choice Hotels, but there is no imminent revolution in the pipeline. The core values and concept will remain unchanged and the hotel will constantly seek to find new ways to develop a unique approach to hospitality – with the staff taking centre stage. The staff members know every nook and cranny of the hotel and are passionately dedicated to the mission of making SKT. PETRI feel like home, only better.

LOUISIANA MUSEUM OF MODERN ART Louisiana Museum of Modern Art is situated in Denmark on the North Zealand coast in a spacious, old park with a fine view across the sound of Sweden. It houses an exquisite collection of modern and contemporary art by international artists and is continually expanded. For this reason, besides individual features that are almost always on view – such as the Giacometti Gallery, the Kusama Installation, and the Powerless Structure by Elmgreen and Dragset in the Panorama Room - the bulk of the collection is shown in selected, curated presentations.
Louisiana Museum of Modern Art Gammel Strandvej 13 DK-3050 Humlebæk Tel: +45 4919 0719 www.louisiana.dk
Every year, the Louisiana Museum shows approx 8 major exhibitions of modern and contemporary art, including classical masters of modern art as well as new and upcoming international artists. Louisiana is not merely an experience in modern and contemporary art, but a congenial reflection of the interplay between art, architecture and landscape.

The park serves as an ideal setting for displaying the museum’s collection of modern sculptures. Similarly the prominent museum buildings, constructed between 1958 and 1998, offer a fascinating background for the permanent collection of twentieth century art.

NY CARLSBERG GLYPTOTEK The Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek presents the largest collection of ancient art, French art and Danish Golden Age art in a frame where even the architecture and the interior is unparalleled in Denmark. The man behind the Glyptotek, Carlsberg breweries’ own Carl Jacobsen, was one of the1800’s big tycoons and patrons of the arts. He created one of his era’s greatest private art collections. The brewer was a passionate collector and nearly squandered his entire fortune to create the exceptional collection of art and artifacts.

THORVALDSENS MUSEUM Thorvaldsen’s Museum is built as a framework for a single artist’s oeuvre, the Danish sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen (1770-1844). Thorvaldsen lived more than 40 years in Rome, where he became one of the most celebrated artists. In 1838, he bequeathed both his work and his art collections to his home city Copenhagen that dedicated an entire museum building to his work. Thorvaldsen Museum opened in 1848 and it was the country’s first public museum. The museum’s architecture and the exhibited sculptures play beautifully together, and the colorful and richly decorated rooms are a very special experience. The museum consists of 900 of Thorvaldsen’s own works - sculptures and reliefs in plaster and marble and designed and modeled sketches for sculptures. Most images are taken from Greek and Roman mythology - but there are also a large number of portrait busts and sculptures of European civilians, ecclesiastical and royalty, all ordered their portrait by the famous sculptor. The museum also holds Thorvaldsen’s collection of Danish and European paintings and his antique collection with marble sculptures, vases, coins and more from Egypt, Greece and Italy.

Tea was one of the most important products traded at the end of the 18th century and many merchants established and obtained their goods from docking ships at Christianshavn in Copenhagen. Among these merchants was Niels Brock Perch the founder of A.C. Perch´s Tea Shop. The idea was to sell the best teas from all over the world and today this is still our most important task. Seven generations of tea merchants have owned the family business and the historical tea shop hasn´t changed much in 180 years. Today you can choose between 175 different kinds of tea in the shop and the Tearoom offers you the traditional afternoon tea with delicious scones, petit four cakes and small finger sandwiches. ARKEN Kun 20 kilometer syd for København ligger ARKEN Museum for Moderne Kunst. ARKEN Only 20 kilometres south of Copenhagen lies ARKEN, Denmark’s newest museum of modern art. Søren Robert Lund is the architect behind the distinctive building, which has risen on the water’s edge in Køge Bugt Beach Park since the opening in 1996. As suggested by the name, the building was designed as a metaphor for a ship, and the maritime architecture and the museum identity revolve around the location. In 2015 the sea is set to move closer to the museum when the surrounding nature is landscaped to create an ”Island of Art” encompassed by water. ARKEN offers world-class art. Each year the museum puts on 7 or 8 different exhibitions of modern Danish, Nordic and international art. The collection mainly consists of contemporary art. ARKEN also houses one of Europe’s most important collections from the renowned British artist Damien Hirst as well as a spectacular work by Chinese artist Wi Weiwei.

FREDERIKSBORG CASTLE Art, culture and history is gathered at king Christian 4.s renaissance castle, which is one of Copenhagen suburban’s finest museums. A tour of Frederiksborg Castle’s many beautiful rooms is a journey through 500 years of Danish history. The story is told through portraits, paintings, furniture and decorative arts and on your way you will meet kings, queens, nobles, bourgeois, all of which have helped to shape Denmark’s history and development from the middle ages to the 21st century. The extravagant renaissance building with its many spires and towers were built by king Christian 4. In 1859 there was a fire that destroyed much of the castle’s interior, but you can still find chambers that tell the story of the king’s castle. The Chapel and the Audience Chamber survived the fire and the two rooms, one from the renaissance and the other from thebaroque, are some of Denmark’s finest preserved royal interiors.

BJØRN WIINBLAD 13 June 2015 – 17 January 2016 Bjørn Wiinblad (1918-2006) was a loner in Danish art, design and artistcraftsmanship. His elegant curlicues and luxuriant forms are a popular national heritage in Denmark, and now his imaginative universe is seeing a revival. Bjørn Wiinblad wanted the beautiful. As an imagemaker and as a human being he took an aestheticizing approach to the world. His highly ornamented, figurative fairytale universe was created with a meticulous wealth of detail that testifies to a passion for the inclusive, atmospheric and decorative. It is his characteristic line that binds his whole universe together. Opinion is divided on Bjørn Wiinblad – for some people he goes to the heart of personal memories; for others he is simply far too much. Nevertheless Bjørn Wiinblad enjoys a significant place in our shared cultural heritage, and for that very reason it is relevant to cast a fresh glance on his artistic production. ARKEN presents the most wide-ranging exhibition ever of Wiinblad with ceramics, tapestries, posters, illustrations, costumes and stage design, with a focus on his sources of inspiration and his unique artistic line. Through samples of his extensive production, the exhibition paints a nuanced picture of Wiinblad’s oeuvre.

240 YEARS OF BLUE PORCELAIN PASSION Since 1775, porcelain from Royal Copenhagen has been synonymous with uncompromising quality and a modern lifestyle. This year, Royal Copenhagen is celebrating its 240th anniversary as one of the most celebrated and coveted porcelain brands in the world, and its mainstay, then and now, is passion. Passion for craftsmanship, passion for art and passion for writing porcelain history. At the heart of this anniversary narrative is pattern no. 1 – Blue Fluted Plain. I centrum for jubilæumsfortællingen står stel nr. 1 – Musselmalet Riflet.

This year marks the 240th anniversary of Danish Queen Juliane Marie’s founding of the Royal Danish Porcelain Factory – today known throughout the world as Royal Copenhagen. Juliane Marie was a visionary monarch with a keen interest in science and an understanding of the importance of natural resources in a modern world. This made porcelain an attractive material and when the secret to producing ‘white gold’ was cracked in Denmark in 1775, the Danish royal family got more than a valuable porcelain production in its name. Juliane Marie founded one of the most iconic porcelain factories in the world – one that continues to stamp the base of every single piece it produces with the symbol of its royal roots.

A PASSION FOR BLUE SINCE 1775
Royal Copenhagen is blue-blooded from birth, but the factory’s hallmark is more than just its connections to royalty. Fine craftsmanship, quality and art have all been part of Royal Copenhagen’s DNA since the very first pattern was created in 1775. Inspired by the porcelain of the East, the pattern features blue chrysanthemums on white glaze, stylised to suit Western tastes. Today, 240 years later, the pattern we know as Blue Fluted Plain (in Danish musselmalet, literally meaning blue mussel-painted) has become an international porcelain icon and every single piece is still painted, glazed and stamped by hand. Whether the name stems from the fluted design, which is reminiscent of a seashell, or from the distinctive blue colour, remains a mystery. But one thing is certain, the blue pattern has become a symbol the world over of the very finest in Danish design and craftsmanship.

THE MAGAZINE NO. 28
148
BACK TO BASICS
In Denmark, the original blue pattern is considered part of the country’s cultural heritage. It was Royal Copenhagen’s first design and it continues to be the most popular. Consequently, Royal Copenhagen’s anniversary is more than just the story of one of the oldest companies in the world. It is also the story of 240 years of reinterpretation of this same pattern, pattern no. 1. Over the ages, the chrysanthemum motif has been developed and gently refined, and in the present century, it has been transplanted and quickly grown into the signature blossom of our modern tastes and uses. In 2000, Karen Kjældgård-Larsen started a porcelain revolution when she featured supersized flowers on her new design as a fresh interpretation of the Blue Fluted universe in the aesthetic of a new generation. Today, Blue Fluted Mega is an established modern classic and the porcelain heritage continues to produce new offshoots – new stylistic shapes, reinterpretations and colours – from the mother of all patterns: pattern no. 1. From Louise Campbell’s deconstructive Elements pattern to Blue Fluted Mega’s fashionable younger sibling, Black Fluted Mega, which joined the floral family in 2006, introducing for the first time a masculine element to Royal Copenhagen’s product range. By developing and reinterpreting the existing basic patterns, Royal Copenhagen expresses and honours its unique design history while tapping into the enormous potential this timeless design embodies.

NEW (BLUE) NOTES
Since its founding in 1775, Royal Copenhagen’s core values have remained unchanged. Royal Copenhagen’s products are the result of fine craftsmanship, quality and design traditions and a tribute to the beauty that surrounds us. In recent years, this porcelain mission has been lifted to new heights. Laying a table with the world’s finest hand-painted porcelain is no longer reserved for special occasions, but has been incorporated into the many rituals of daily life, adding an element of magic with a touch of luxury. From the thermal mug for your morning coffee to the deep plate you use to serve pasta to your family. Supported by 240 years of Danish design history, Royal Copenhagen continues the story in 2015 of one of the world’s most iconic porcelain brands, building bridges between tradition and renewal with the reinterpretation of the blue passion in two original new patterns: Blue Fluted and Black Fluted. Both feature richly coloured, matt surfaces free from extraneous decoration, making a rustic yet refined – contemporary yet historic – porcelain statement for modern generations. And the blues go on....
The blues goes on....

150 Unique to Tesla Model S, the door latches sink into the door when they are not in use, allowing for a sleek and streamlined design.
THE MAGAZINE NO. 28
THE AESTHETICS OF AERODYNAMIC The Tesla Model S is sleekly streamlined to maximise airflow, combining maximum efficiency with supercar allure.
Tesla’s design and engineering teams have gone to extraordinary lengths to ensure that air flows smoothly above, around and below the Tesla Model S to reduce drag, which in turn maximises battery-range. Aerodynamics is a vital component of automotive efficiency. The more air you need to push out of the way to reach or maintain a certain speed, the more energy you use and the less efficient your journey becomes. “Defining the physique of a car involves paying attention to a lot of details. And for Tesla, it’s also about taking an unconventional approach to elements of the cars that might seem unimportant for winning over a car buyer’s heart,” says Franz von Holzhausen, Tesla’s chief of design.
151
THE MAGAZINE NO. 28
RETRACTING HANDLES
To minimise the drag, Tesla’s designers have combined a number of technologies. The smart air suspension of the Tesla Model S lowers the car’s height at highway speeds to reduce its frontal area. Electronically controlled vents stay closed until sensors detect that cooling is necessary. And the front bumper routes air uninterrupted beneath the battery’s flat skid plate and past the rear diffuser to reduce drag. Unique to the Tesla Model S, the door latches also sink into the door when not in use, allowing for a sleek and aerodynamic design. The handles are controlled by a small electric motor inside the door, which automatically extends the handles when the car is unlocked by remote control and retracts them into the body again when the driver and passengers are seated, creating a seamless surface for air to pass over. “As you approach the car for the first time, your first contact is through the door handle. It’s a memorable experience. It needs to elicit an emotion. They should feel solid and inspire confidence, but they should also lend to the aerodynamics of the vehicle. That’s why I wanted the handles to be more of an accent, appearing when needed. As planned, they will only present themselves when passengers approach the car. Making the handles flush to the body improves airflow down the body’s sides, reducing the drag coefficient and extending range,” Franz von Holzhausen explains.
152The door handles are controlled by a small electric motor assembled inside the door with sensors, which automatically pushes the door handle, when the driver walks into the car with a key fob. Once the driver is in, the door handles retract into the door.

Model S requires just 14 horsepower to maintain 110 kph.
TOP OF CLASS
Car and Driver magazine has found that the Model S is one of the ‘slipperiest’ cars on the road (and yes, that’s a good thing). Comparing five cars with low drag areas and using a wind tunnel to determine each vehicle’s drag and lift properties, the magazine declared Model S the winner, beating the Toyota Prius, the Nissan LEAF, the Chevrolet Volt, and the Mercedes-Benz CLA250. Pointing out that the Model S “proves that you can look slick and be slick at the same time.” Model S returned an impressive 0.24 figure in the wind tunnel.

FIREBRANDS OF DANISH DESIGN By Mathias Caspersen
Joining the stellar league of some of Denmark’s best-known interior design brands, GUBI has shot to fame with their contemporary collections. The family-owned brand has recently opened a new Copenhagen store. The stars of Danish design are household names worldwide – not just in Denmark. Mid-century furniture designs by Hans J. Wegner and Arne Jacobsen and cutting-edge home entertainment by B&O have defined modern living for decades. GUBI has in recent years shot to fame as a new player in contemporary Danish design. Just a few months ago, GUBI opened a new 400m2 flagship store in Copenhagen. Stringent and stylish, the store reflects everything the company stands for.

at tage chancer
TAKING CHANCES
The new GUBI store has found a home on Møntergade in a building that was once the original 1916 premises of the iconic Illum department store. At that time a thriving shopping area, the street is today somewhat peripheral to the city’s main pedestrian zone – a choice of location that says everything about the company vision. “We wanted a space for our own ideas, both literally and figuratively,” says Jacob Gubi, Creative Director and son of the founder. “And so I think it is important to influence one’s environment. This means you have to find something a bit raw and undiscovered – and that requires a readiness to take chances.” Taking chances is what GUBI has done from day one. In 1970, the self-taught designer Gubi Olsen and his wife, Lisbeth, were given 500 Danish kroner by Lisbeth’s mother to buy a new phone. However, they spent it on biscuit tins, which they spray-painted and resold with a five-krone profit. Then followed a 45-year career that saw the birth of one of Denmark’s leading design players, the purveyor of lost classics and the creator of contemporary icons.

172
OLD AND NEW
Today, GUBI’s young designers constantly turn out new attention-grabbing creations, while Jacob Gubi patiently combs flea markets, auctions and archives to find forgotten twentieth-century gems. A fine example of a rediscovered classic is the Bestlite lamps. When GUBI approached the English lamp manufacturer Best & Lloyd in the 1980s, the company was on the verge of bankruptcy. Once having supplied lamps for the Titanic, Best & Lloyd had to send supplies to GUBI wrapped in newspaper; that was all they could afford. Similar stories could be told about designs by Jacques Adnet, Greta Grossman and Mathieu Matégot, which are now highlight names in the GUBI catalogue where they are elegantly balanced with new designs, such as the timeless chair series Beetle and Masculo by the young Danish-Italian duo GamFratesi. Their signature design, however, is the eponymous GUBI Chair, which was the first design to be moulded using 3D veneer. Eames and others had repeatedly yet unsuccessfully tried to master the technique, and it cost GUBI oceans of time and money to develop. But the goal was achieved – and the chair was later included in the MoMA permanent collection.

RAGING FIRE
The new GUBI store in Copenhagen is designed to reflect the company’s legacy and ethos: take chances! So if the omnipresent Nordic minimalism in Copenhagen underwhelms you, drop by Møntergade where the colour splash and bold materials in the grand yet intimate studio space are refreshingly vivid. Here GUBI’s designs blend dramatically with ceramics from Jacob Gubi’s private collection, graphic 1950s textiles and designer Caroline Ost’s tailor-made room dividers. The overarching impression is one of pure and bold style – the GUBI way. Or in Jacob Gubi’s own words: “We have now achieved some experience and gravitas, but we’re still young and reckless. We’re out to find the next design or the next designer – we’re on a treasure hunt. The fire and passion still rage on.”
Vil man have en pause fra tidens altdominerende, minimale New Nordic-stil, bør man derfor lægge vejen forbi Møntergade.

Jacob Gils started working with multiple exposures out of a wish to artistically challenge him self. This initiated the comprehensive series Movement less than 10 years ago. Instead of holding the camera still, Gils moves it. The photographed motives – multitude of locations, trees, urban iconic structures or facades - are thus seen from a number of angles. Each photograph contains 18-20 pictures that have been multi exposed in the camera, which gives the illusion of a motion – a movement. The dynamic colourful style and refined technique gives the artist a possibility to move boundaries and raise questions such as “What is photography today?” Further, the formal quality that the photos are not instantly decoded, but requires time to decipher in order to see all the little details, is a photographic stimulus to the artist as is the criterion of perfection. To look at art should not be easy and rapidly done. The idea of an art impressionistic imagery, the photographer´s inner feeling of quality and structures in our society, that has the potential to evoke old and new stories fascinates, and is what makes Gils´ work of art long lasting, bold and versatile. The Movement works show that photography is a many-facetted idiom we need to embrace more and learn to understand. In 2015 Gils will be exhibited at his Danish gallery In The Gallery/Dronningens Tvaergade 19, Copenhagen and at fairs in Los Angeles, Milan, Shanghai and Paris. ENTER HERE FOR THE REVOLUTION DRIVERLESS CARS will become part of everyday life in just a few years time. The Mercedes-Benz F 015 Luxury in Motion concept car shows that autonomous driving will change our perception of what a car is from that of a means of transport to becoming a mobile living space.

The exquisite walnut wood lining the floor of the F 015 Luxury in Motion, four rotating seats trimmed in white Nappa leather, acres of glass and gleaming aluminum can leave you feeling like you’ve wandered into the lounge of a luxury hotel rather than stepped inside a car. It is an impression reinforced by the apparent lack of a steering wheel at first glance. Indeed, the F 015 only needs one in exceptional circumstances – because the new Mercedes-Benzresearch car drives fully autonomously. For the designers and engineers, the development of the futuristic luxury sedan wasn’t all about technology and autonomous driving, however. Rather, their aim was to demonstrate how self-driving cars are poised to revolutionize personal mobility, and with it our society as a whole. “The car is growing beyond its role merely as a means of transport and will ultimately become a mobile living space,” says Chairman of the Board of Management of Daimler AG, Dieter Zetsche, explaining the idea behind this innovative project. The unusual proportions of the F 015 identify it as a totally new kind of vehicle concept. Its long wheelbase and short overhangs permit a generous amount of passenger space. And that means the occupants not only travel in great comfort on board, they can also make the best possible use of their time on the move – working or playing together, or simply chatting face-toface. With six screens integrated into its sides and rear compartment, the car turns into a digital experience arena on wheels. The F 015 is designed to ensure that the F-Cell Plug-in Hybrid drive system – an electric drive system with a fuel cell, whose batteries can also be charged from a mains socket – receives sufficient impact protection. This electric hybrid system enables the car to cover 1,100 km (683 miles) in a single journey – autonomously, silently and with zero local emissions.
Mercedes-Benz F 015 Luxury in Motion drives af to separate elmotorer, som tilsammen producerer 268 hk (200 kW).

FEELGOOD FACTOR Exquisite materials like walnut wood, Nappa leather, aluminum and glass lend the interior the feel of a luxury lounge. The four seats can be rotated so that passengers can face each other when the car is driving itself. If one of the occupants wants to take over driving duties, the steering wheel automatically extends out of the dashboard – and the driver’s seat turns to face forwards again. DIGITAL PLAYGROUND The large ultra-HD displays integrated into the door panel trim and rear compartment can be controlled using gestures or touch, and adapt their interface automatically to the situation at hand. Color signals tell rearwardfacing passengers when a corner is approaching or the car is about to change lanes.
ENLIGHTENMENT GUARANTEED
With its “Space Flow” profile, the research vehicle appears as if cut from a single mold. a smooth line runs from the front grille over the roof into the rear, taking in the hood, cabin and trunk along the way. The futuristic impression is further enhanced by the flush-fitting side windows, which have an almost mirror-like appearance thanks to their extremely finely-patterned surface. large led modules positioned at the front and rear ends of the car allow it to communicate with the outside world. A narrow band of leds positioned higher up at the rear serves not only as a brake light and indicators, it is also used to signal whether the driver is currently steering the car (white) or the car is driving itself (blue).

SHAMBALLA JEWELS By Anna Vestergaard

THE MAGAZINE NO. 28
The unique Shamballa Jewels flagship store opens a world of wonder and discovery, letting you explore unique individualised jewellery pieces handcrafted in Copenhagen. Deriving from Tibetan Buddhism, the name Shamballa signifies a hidden Asian kingdom of enlightened, compassionate souls. But you need look no further than No. 7 Ny Østergade in Copenhagen to find the flagship store of the Danish jewellery brand that has brought the name Shamballa Jewels to fame, sharing with the world a vision of craft and creation. Visitors to the Copenhagen store can discover a wide assortment of customised jewellery, which with their gold, precious stones and rare gems have caught the fancy of such iconic designers as Karl Lagerfeld, Diane von Furstenberg and Valentino. Inspired by Buddhist prayer beads, the Shamballa bracelets are strung together using the ancient macramé technique of braiding. The Copenhagen flagship store is the creation of Space Copenhagen, the interior designers behind the world-famous Copenhagen restaurant Noma. Arches and columns inspired by Buddhist stupas transport you to oriental realms, while the Danish design heritage is evident in the pure-lined elegance and choice of signature materials: smoked oak and burnished brass. Among the more spiritual elements is the 500kg stone lingam and yoni, the Buddhist symbols for female and male energies. Together with hidden features the shop invites you to discover the magic of creation. “We are at heart a Danish family-owned business that is very proud of our Danish identity; this is why we chose to build our first big flagship store in Copenhagen rather than in any other city in the world. With the interactive ‘hidden’ display compartments, we hope to remind visitors to explore the energy of creation. Our aim is that every collector should leave with a unique, personal piece which they have taken part in creating,” say Mads and Mikkel Kornerup, brothers and founders of Shamballa Jewels. Mads Kornerup designed the iconic Shamballa bracelet in 2001. The Shamballa logo seeks to remind you that every person is a star, emanating heat and light like true celestial bodies. Following the international success of the designs, Mads and Mikkel Kornerup established Shamballa Jewels in 2005 and continue to create inspired spiritual jewellery. The collections include customisable bracelets, necklaces, cufflinks, earrings and rings, which are set, braided and polished by hand in Copenhagen, Denmark.

Kort sagt, Milano i København.

And an international rollout is underway, continuing with the By Malene Birger flagship store on Marylebone High Street in London. “We were aiming to create a store concept that was elegant and reassuringly modern yet with a slightly nostalgic bent. We found that in our collaboration with Dimore Studio. There’s a unique elegance to their work. You see that in their renovation of the Grand Hotel et de Milan. Their background, with a strong focus on hotel interiors and private residences, echoed perfectly with our DNA and our ambitions for the future,” says Christina Exsteen, Creative Director of By Malene Birger.
IRRESISTIBLE TOUCH The By Malene Birger mission is simple: to design clothes and accessories that women find irresistible and which make them feel feminine, chic and ready to take on the world.

Hans Alf Gallery represents a select group of contemporary Danish and international artists, whose work span across different media, traditions and artistic forms of expression. The aim of the gallery is two-fold: They wish to present international art of the highest caliber to a Danish audience while at the same time promoting Danish art internationally. This versatility is reflected directly in the physical qualities of the gallery, which provide optimal conditions for both the art to unfold and for the spectator to observe. Exhibitions in Hans Alf Gallery are often project-oriented and theme-driven.

Coco Electra is a prolific and sensitive artistic soul who brings order to her imaginative world. The atmosphere in her paintings is romantic, melancholic and remote – yet also intimately reflects the artist’s personal presence, drawing on hard-rock antics. Coco Electra loves Chinese ink drawings – their universe of beautiful birds and flowers, which create a sense of space on an otherwise plane void. Many young Chinese artists subscribe to the Pop Surrealist movement, complete with big-eyed Mangas and sharp-lined contours. Coco Electra’s career as a visual artist soon took shape after she made up her mind to pursue the arts. Her background as a freelance tattoo artist has given her all the right technical skills.
