The mobile clinic is part of the hospice’s plan to bring its services closer to people’s homes. Generous funding by the health charity ‘Walk the Walk’, with a donation of £21,000, has meant that the mobile clinic will be able to continue for a further three months, until the end of August 2021. Support has also been shown by AFC Bournemouth who have allocated space for the vehicle to park up each week in the car park at the Vitality Stadium.
closer to home and giving patients the ability to get to their appointments more easily and receive their vital treatment in a relaxed and stress-free environment. The extended pilot will allow us to support even more people closer to their homes.
Hospice CEO Clare Gallie advised, “We are delighted with this support from ‘Walk the Walk’. The pilot has been a great success for Lymphoedema patients over the last 2 months, bringing treatment and services
“We also offer huge thanks to the football club for their generous support in hosting the mobile clinic, it makes a real difference to the lives of our patients and their ability to access our services with ease.”
“The clinic is open every Thursday from 9am to 5.30pm at AFC Bournemouth car park at Kings Park in Boscombe, with plenty of free parking for patients, meaning local people do not have to deal with the stress and costs of travelling to the hospice which is based in Poole.
BRFC Ladies Team Coach Hughton Campbell said, “We have a good Youth Section at the Club, but up until now there has been no pathway for girls to follow playing rugby post 17 years old. We are keen that our lady members have the opportunity to be able to continue their rugby experiences and that we can keep their talent, passion and enthusiasm within the club. “We will be putting a proposal to the RFU to join a local league for the 22-23 season, and for the coming season we will schedule friendly matches with local clubs. We intend to start pre-season training sessions in August. “In the longer term we have ambitions to progress to higher level rugby and to have a Premiership Team within 5 years.” Registrations of interest are requested by e: hughton.campbell@bournemouth-rugby. co.uk

Nick Cave and Warren Ellis have announced an Autumn 2021 tour of the UK that will open at Lighthouse, Poole’s Centre for the Arts, on Thursday 2 September. In their first ever tour as a duo, Cave and Ellis will play 20 shows across the UK this September and October, following the release of their acclaimed album CARNAGE. While they have composed and recorded soundtracks together, and Ellis is a long-term member of The Bad Seeds, CARNAGE is the first entire album of songs the pair have released. Cave and Ellis’ creative chemistry is rooted in their long history of music making, both as collaborators and as individual artists. They first crossed paths in 1993, when Ellis played violin on several songs for the Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds album, Let Love In, before going on to join the band as a full-time member. The two have also recorded in Grinderman, formed in 2006, and have worked together on numerous film and TV scores. Cave and Ellis will be joined on stage by musician Johnny Hostile and backing singers Wendi Rose, T Jae Cole and Janet Ramus. Tickets on sale now at www.lighthousepoole.co.uk.

HOSPICE MEMORY EVENT RETURNS AS LO C K D OW N R ESTRI CTI O N S LI F TED Due to the easing of lockdown restrictions, Forest Holme Hospice has confirmed details of a scaled-down Tie A Yellow Ribbon event at the hospice on 5th August. ‘Tie a Yellow Ribbon’ is a special commemorative event that usually takes place each year at Forest Holme, during Hospice Awareness Month in June, and is one of the key events in the hospice calendar as it brings the community together in joint celebration of loved ones, irrespective of whether they were cared for at the hospice or not. Due to the Coronavirus pandemic, it was not possible to host Tie a Yellow Ribbon in the usual way this year, so that charity instead organised a yellow-ribbon inspired Arts Trail around Poole featuring work submitted by supporters. However, with the government giving the green light to the lifting of many Covid restrictions, Forest Holme will now have a special stand set-up in the car park at the front of the hospice to allow visitors to write a message of dedication for a loved-one on a ribbon which will be put on display in the garden throughout the summer. If you would like to dedicate a yellow ribbon, please visit Forest Holme at 5 Seldown Road, Poole BH15 1TS on Thursday 5th August between the hours of 11am and 4pm. The hospice will continue to maintain Covidsafe measures in line with NHS guidelines.

Kay Ward moved from Southampton to Esprit in Poole with her cat, Bailey, after purchasing a one-bedroom apartment through the Platinum Skies shared ownership scheme. Esprit is based in the centre of Poole just a two-minute walk to the shops and cafes in the Dolphin Shopping Centre, a four-minute walk to the Lighthouse, Poole’s Centre for the Arts, and a s even-minute walk to Poole Park. Homeowners at Esprit benefit from communal facilities including a bistro and a homeowner’s lounge, which both play host to a range of events including afternoon tea, coffee mornings, quizzes, and act as a meeting point for communal coach trips. Kay said: “At the time I didn’t think that I could afford a place like this but just out of curiosity I came here to have a look and that was it. It was love at first sight because of the big windows, and the kitchen and all the equipment in it. It was a lot easier to move than I thought. I was married for 57 years and this is the first time I’ve had to do something on my own. They offer

the security of not having to do everything yourself as it is all arranged for you. I know it’s a bit late in life at 78, but I just felt that I wanted to get out to see and do things. When I saw this place, that was it.” Kay said that she enjoys her own independence within her apartment safe in the knowledge that there is an on-site Community Manager who is available to contact if she needs them. Kay went on to say: “When you get to a certain age, people think that you’re incapable and you get classed like ‘Ooh, she’s an old age pensioner. She’s got no mind of her own. She can’t make up her mind.’ But you can at Esprit. I can’t express it enough how much I like it here.” Prices for a Platinum Skies home start from £105,000 with the Platinum Skies flexible shared ownership option. All Platinum Skies homes have a dedicated onsite Community Manager who help to organise fun activities such as wine tasting workshops, cheese and wine evenings, yoga, quizzes, and crafts, as well as providing practical and emotional support. To book an appointment to view an apartment in Esprit, go to Platinumskies. co.uk or call the Platinum Skies team on 01202 040996.

Preserving the legacy of successful business owners
When it comes to selling your business, getting the right advice is vital. Most business owners only sell a company once. Do you have an exit strategy? Should you use a broker? Do you know what your business is worth? Setting up a business involves blood, sweat and tears, but selling it needn’t be the same way. We arrange ethical exits for the owners by buying businesses with the aim of protecting everything that made them successful in the first place. We want to maintain your legacy, who else can promise you that? Our key values are pride, honesty and integrity and we believe that is the winning formula for the staff you are leaving behind. If you want to find out more about how we can help you contact Robbie Mair, 07900 555217 or you can visit www.K-ZenGroup.com.

The ‘Bank of Mum and Dad’: What you need to know about helping your child financially Are you considering offering your child financial assistance to help them get onto the property ladder? Alistair MacFarlane, Partner at Dutton Gregory Solicitors, reveals how you can provide the financial support your children may need and if it is a good idea. What are we talking about when we refer to the ‘Bank of Mum and Dad’? We’re referring to the receiving of money from parents or a family member. Increasingly young people, particularly first-time buyers, are turning to loved ones and using family loans when buying a home or putting down a deposit. This can help lower monthly repayments and interest rates. Why are more people turning to family members for financial support? Rises in house prices and living costs are making it harder for young people to save for their first home. The ‘Bank of Mum and Dad’ has never been busier, with a 2018 report by Legal & General estimating that one of four housing transactions made that year depended on contributions made by family members. How can you provide financial assistance to a family member? There are several ways you help a loved one financially. You can gift them the money, loan it to them or set up a joint investment. It’s best to seek professional advice to help decide which is the best option for you.
Alistair Macfarlane Partner
Gifting the money is the simplest choice, but can come with the greatest risk, as you have no say in how the money is used. If you decide to loan them the money, a solicitor such as myself can help you establish conditions to protect your assets, and offer tax-planning advice. You can also agree on how they will repay the personal loan they borrow.
If your child is in a relationship, contemplate asking them to sign a Cohabitation or Prenuptial Agreement before they receive the money. This can help ensure it will be spent wisely and is protected in the event of a divorce or separation.
With expert guidance, a joint investment is easy to set up and is a great way for you to help your child buy a home and invest in your family’s future. If the property is sold, you could use the return to help boost your pension savings.
It’s also best to speak with your intended lender beforehand, as some banks may not be comfortable approving a mortgage loan that’s been heavily funded by other family members.
You may also decide to set up a Trust that uses money from your estate, which may have tax planning advantages.
I can provide bespoke legal advice, explain your options, make you aware of any relevant tax considerations and put protections in place, so you can provide the financial support that your child needs.
What will I need to consider before agreeing to provide any money? First, decide how much money you want to pay them. This will depend on what you can afford, why the money is needed and possibly how many other children you have. I always recommend that you should treat each child fairly, and offer them all the same amount.

At home with Paloma Faith, as she launches her first interiors label Sam Wylie-Harris chats to the singer about her style influences, and why she takes the same approach with decor as she does with her outfits. Opulent glamour, vintage chinoiserie and romantic noirs influenced by the cinematic works of Wong Karwai, deserve to be showcased with a flourish. And as someone who likes to feel “every minute of every day is beautiful”, Paloma Faith knows how to channel her love of retro bohemia and vintage style – whether that’s with her scene-stealing outfits on stage, or her home style. In-between finishing albums and filming projects – she’s set to tour her fifth album, Infinite Things in September – the singer-songwriter has just launched Paloma Home (palomahome.com), a blueprint for the personal style reflected in her own London townhouse. “It’s inspired by the way I decorated my own house,” says Faith, who turns 40 later in July. “Because I’m never at home and usually on tour pre-Covid, I tend to take pictures of a space and then imagine it in my mind and put everything together while I’m away,” she adds. “And when I get back, it’s all done and I just pray that it works – and it usually does.”

“Whereas I became the opposite,” Faith states. “I really enjoy looking for old things, and over the years, travelling and everything, I never go to a city without having a quick look through vintage homewares and clothes, to bring stuff back.” As every maximallist knows, there’s always room for more stuff. “Like the other day, I sort of secretly bought some life-sized ceramic dogs for my house, two of them. And I didn’t mention it to my boyfriend, who hates the fact I constantly buy and believe more is more. “They arrived and he texted me: ‘Two life-sized ceramic dogs just arrived Paloma, what are you doing? Where are they going to go?’ I said, ‘There’s plenty of room, I’ll sort it out when I get home’, and he was so annoyed with me!,” quips the musician, who lives with her partner, French artist Leyman Lahcine, and their two children. “I was like, ‘Oh sorry’, trying to keep it light, but he was so irritated. He was like, ‘This is ridiculous now!’” Fortunately, she’s found a place for them. “They’re outside my daughter’s bedroom, because I told her they would guard the room for her.” Along with her passion for music, her love of films and romantic noirs – by acclaimed director Wong Ka-wei – first influenced her when she was a student. “I was doing a masters when I was 21 at Central Saint Martins and I became obsessed by him then.” Film fans might be familiar with Faith’s favourite film, the romantic drama 2046, set in China in the Sixties (the sequel to In The Mood For Love). “It was all very saturated and romantic, with loads of vintage to fit in with the Shanghai Sixties look. It stayed with me for years,” she recalls.

“When I started to do up my own house, the first one, I looked for that wallpaper [from the movie] and couldn’t find it,” Faith recalls. “I’m very good at sourcing things, so it wasn’t for lack of trying. And so the next time, when I bought after that, I tried to look again and still couldn’t find it.” Determined to make this vision a reality, she admits her Oriental Leaves Red Wallpaper was one of the first prints in the new range to be brought to life. “I’m over the moon I’ll finally be able to admire it in my own home.” Lady Muck features more of a ladylike palette. “I can just imagine someone sitting with a powder puff, that’s where the name comes from, and it’s got that pastel-y, very feminine look,” notes Faith. Rock N’Roll, meanwhile, with its leopard print seating, sparks thoughts of sultry backstage sets and a cocktail of style statements – but you can create your own story. “I feel like leopard and tiger, to me, are a neutral colour. Very much a staple, almost like a black T-shirt, so it plays around with that,” Faith continues of the collection. “And also, with Rock N’Roll, it’s got that uninhibited,

the cushions and bedding. I’m already trying to imagine which piece of furniture from my home I can get rid of, so I can make space for it.” And another bonus? No need to worry about little ones and sticky fingers mucking up your plush furnishings. “The good thing about this range is there’re so many patterns and clashes, you probably won’t notice any stains at all,” says Faith. “So just go for it and let the kids draw all over it. You won’t be able to see it!” Words by Sam Wylie-Harris, PA

Where to have the ultimate fantasy adventures Escape the doldrums of reality by planning a fairy-tale holiday, says Sarah Marshall. Although for some, the idea of going on a foreign holiday might still feel like a fantasy, there’s no harm in indulging in a bit of make-believe. So many destinations across the globe are steeped in mystery and folklore, and learning about the bizarre stories and traditions underpinning communities is an adventure in itself. If you’re seeking some escapism beyond even the wildest of dreams, try these trips exploring some of the world’s most outlandish fables and beliefs – from mermaids with monkey heads, to elves hiding in rocks.

MADAGASCAR THE MYTH: During the 18th century, at the peak of the Spice Trade, the Indian Ocean was awash with pirates waiting to hijack vessels laden with exotic treasures. Sainte-Marie, an island off the northeast coast of Madagascar, became a popular hideout thanks to its strategic position and availability of fresh water. Scotsman Captain Kidd, who was hired by European royals to attack foreign ships, supposedly stashed his loot in Sainte-Marie, where he also sank his vessel the Adventure Galley – which was rediscovered between 2001 and 2015. VISIT: Guests can stay on the sands of the Sainte-Marie Island at the Princesse Bora Lodge and Spa, an ecoconscious hideaway with sunken bathtubs, a beach restaurant and on-site vegetable garden. HARZ MOUNTAINS, GERMANY THE MYTH: Every year, witches would congregate at the top of Brocken mountain to worship the pagan god and goddess of spring, Wotan and Freya. The ritual of Walpurgisnacht was so dramatic, it captured the attention of German writer Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, who used the Harz Mountains as a backdrop for scenes in his famous work Faust.

OKINAWA, JAPAN THE MYTH: Not all mermaids have flowing locks and big beautiful eyes. In Japan, the ningyo (meaning human fish or mermaid) has a monkey’s mouth with tiny teeth, a voice like a flute and she cries white pearl tears. A majestic creature, she has the power to bestow eternal youth and beauty on any woman who (bizarrely) manages to take a bit out of her. But catching the sea nymph has never been easy: a portent of storms and misfortune, she’s always been given a wide berth by fishermen, and villages in Okinawa fear trouble if she’s washed up ashore. On the plus side, a belief eating a ningyo will bring bad fortune has partially helped preserve the dugong – a cumbersome sea cow thought to have been mistaken by early sailors for mermaids. VISIT: Travellers can snorkel in the crystal clear waters of Okinawa on a 14-night Sun, Sea and Sights in Japan trip with Luxtripper (luxtripper.co.uk; 020 8534 3125) from £4,250 per person, including flights. A test of mental and physical strength Hot, sandy, unstable terrain - a real test of endurance and strength.
That’s the challenge facing a serving member of the armed forces and a veteran, as they take on a huge challenge to help veterans with mental health difficulties. Veteran Martin Shorey and Monty Byrne, who is still serving in the Armed Forces, will be trekking back and forth along a 29 mile stretch of Dorset coastline, from Sandbanks to Southbourne, continuously for 24 hours. And just to make the challenge even tougher, the duo will be carrying a HM Forces medical stretcher and mannequin along the way. Starting on Saturday 7th August, the duo will undertake the challenge at the height

Celebrating 60 years of iconic ‘A Ladybird Book’ series at Mottisfont in Hampshire Vintage and contemporary Illustrations celebrating 60 years of Ladybird’s iconic ‘A Ladybird Book’ series go on show at Mottisfont in Hampshire, from 24 July to 5 September.
A British Summerscape - from ‘A Ladybird Book’ collection (indoor exhibition) Eighteen original watercolours, created by one of Britain’s best-known wildlife artists for Ladybird’s much-loved illustrated nonfiction book ‘What to Look For in Summer’, are on show at the National Trust’s Mottisfont in Hampshire, from 24 July to 5 September. First published in 1960, Charles Tunnicliffe’s instantly recognisable artworks capture the landscapes, plants and wildlife of a summer season in the British countryside - swallows swooping over farmland on the hunt for insects, a water vole hiding on a river’s edge, an adder basking on sun-warmed dunes. For decades, these exquisitely detailed scenes gave thousands of children the opportunity to learn more about the natural world around them. In ‘What to Look For in Summer’, the onlooker is drawn into a ‘hidden’ world of wildlife activity – a hedgehog on a twilight ramble for food, sea urchins and star fish lurking beneath a rock pool’s surface.

In Mottisfont’s gallery space, blown up sections of these illustrations also cover the walls, creating a feeling of immersion into the landscapes themselves. Tunnicliffe was the most distinguished of all Ladybird’s artists. He had already made his name as a fine artist and was a member of the Royal Academy by the time he was invited to work with the publisher. He illustrated all four books in the original ‘What to Look For ... A Ladybird Book’ series.

Sights and Sounds of Summer (contemporary outdoor gallery) Outside in the gardens’ Beech Circle, a unique gallery space has been created to host Bournemouth-based artist Natasha Durley’s digital illustrations for the new and updated Ladybird edition of ‘What to Look For in Summer’. Published 60 years after Tunnicliffe’s originals, in 2021, their vibrant, contemporary style aims to bring a new curiosity and awareness of nature to the next generation of Ladybird readers. Discover delightful scenes of swimming water voles, upside down bats, the colourful inhabitants of a cornfield, and strawberry-picking rabbits. This is the first time that both the vintage and contemporary illustrations for ‘What to Look For in Summer’ have been displayed together. Artist Natasha Durley: “I’m absolutely delighted that the firstever public display of my illustrations is at Mottisfont – with its wildflower displays, stunning river, and ancient woodland – the property could be a scene from one of the books themselves!

WELL, HOW DID I GET HERE? When you have a great friend, job or marriage there is always a long path of history that brought you together. Simon Tolson reflects on the history that led him to owning Rumsey of Sandbanks.
1908 1930s - 1950s
Rumsey & Rumsey was established - head office Old Christchurch Road, Bournemouth
My grandfather George Tolson (left) is working as a docker in Poole. He moved from Durham where he was brought up in an orphanage. Due to the deprivations of his childhood, he is barely 5ft tall so at 5ft 4 his wife towers over him.
The Rumsey family are already established designers and developers and built significant parts of the Poole infrastructure including the row of shops with apartments above on Sandbanks where they keep the end unit for themselves.
Lily is a member of the Ballard family with long historical ties to Poole where they lived their whole lives close to the Quayside and had a son. During the war, George works on a flying boat operation before being dispatched to Belgium to assist with the air-sea rescue for the final years of conflict. Sadly he dies young before I get the chance to meet him.
1960s - 1980s Britain is swinging and Rumsey & Rumsey grows to be one of the largest and well respected chains of estate agents in the country, with branches all over the South of England and home counties. Sandbanks is actually not considered a premium area just yet as it is too far from the shops and parts of it are still sand dunes; though John Lennon buys his beloved Aunt Mimi a place on the waterside close to the ferry. There is a market for holiday letting in the new blocks of flats and bungalows that are being built so Rumsey Holiday Homes is born and gradually becomes the focus of the Sandbanks office.
In the late 80's the government deregulates estate agency allowing ownership by financial institutions and a gold rush kicks off for anyone with a chain. Black Horse acquire the business and the Rumsey family sail off into the sunset.
1960s - 1980s Harry is a fine-looking lad and after national service marries an Irish nurse and settles down in old Poole next to the water... until it is filled in to make the new road where the Mercedes garage is! Although there is no family history, I grow up obsessed with fishing from an early age, exams are always in the summer when the fishing is best, hence lackluster results and only two terms at uni - I give up and do what I’ve always dreamed of. Here I am featuring on a postcard that was sold in the town for years.
Marriage and mortgage bring new responsibilities if not fashion sense and so I head off on a career selling office equipment.
1990s - 2017 What happens next is not clear but Black Horse don’t want the holiday agency so the business ends up as a remote outpost of a property group based in Bristol. It’s not core to the business and suffers a steady decline and by 2017, is a shadow of its former self with 45 properties, many of which are not up to modern standards.
2017
Simon buys Rumsey
Although I have always lived in Poole I ended up building a holiday business in Cornwall where I had my own holiday home, so when the opportunity arose in 2017 to sell that and acquire Rumsey it was a perfect fit. I’ve been walking past the door since I was a toddler and it still feels like a great privilege to come in every day. We have refurbished the shop, added many new quality properties and over the coming years will strive to constantly improve the business and deliver the best experience for both guests and owners.
2021
Now five times the size and with over 100+ properties, Rumsey continues to grow, with the addition of new team members and a fabulous concierge team.

Simple tips for making the most of a small bedroom From cramped to cosy, this is the info you need when faced with a small bedroom. Arguably we spend more time in our bedrooms than any other room of the house, and we’re conscious for at least some of it, so it’s well worth getting the room right. From inner city tenement blocks to chocolate box cottages, in the housing market space is at a premium, and a lot of the nation’s homes boast shoebox bedrooms in which you’d struggle to swing a cat. Here’s how to make the best of a (very) small bedroom… Under-the-bed storage Your bed is almost certainly the largest item in your bedroom’s stock list, so getting the most out of it is essential to getting the most out of your room. Simple storage boxes do well under most beds (measure carefully before you buy), while pull-out drawers are also popular if you still want access. Think out-of-season clothes, sporadically important files and documents, or nostalgic items you’re not quite ready to send to the charity shop. Use your wall space Most small rooms have far more wall than floor, and canny designers can squeeze usage out of every square inch of masonry. Simple DIY shelves suffice for ornaments and (light) books, while mounted lamps can provide illumination without clogging up limited surfaces.

S M A L L B E D R O O M S | H O M E I M P R OV E M E N T
Use lights strategically Room size is as much about perception as reality, and how large a room feels doesn’t always tally up with how large a room actually is. Natural light can give your bedroom a breezy feel, imitating the wide open spaces of the great outdoors, so make sure any windows have an uninterrupted view across the room. After dark, poorly lit areas quickly feel poky, so stock up on lamps to accent important areas like desks and bedside tables, and send a warm glow splashing across the walls. Cut the clutter The bedroom is perhaps the prime forum for random stuff you don’t need. Kitchens and bathrooms are functional places first and foremost, while the more public nature of the living room makes it ill-suited to generic bits of bric-a-brac. So useless junk often ends up in the bedroom, where it will sit doing nothing but take up space for literally decades unless something is done. Use a light colour palette One of the golden rules of decorating is that light colours make a space feel open and bigger, so whites, creams and greys are often shades of choice in smaller areas. Other colour blocks like desktops and bedsheets can also affect how a room feels.

Think vertically Floor-to-ceiling furnishings serve a dual purpose: they clear space at ground level while also drawing the eye upwards, making the room feel larger and airier. Tall bookcases, cupboards, or even long-hanging curtains can all help spread a room out, while posters and wall hangings at higher altitudes should be just as effective. Utilise your corners Hard-to-access right angles often neglected by decorators, corners make up the kind of dead space you cannot afford in a shoebox bedroom. Triangular shelves can slot into the space nicely, as can most rightangled furniture, bean bags, or angled televisions. Just make sure you’re using them for something. Keep it tidy We know, hardly revolutionary advice, but the single easiest way to make a room feel larger is to put everything away. Your chest of drawers looks the same whether it’s full or empty, so anything not stowed is taking up space unnecessarily. A spring clean can also work wonders. Clean, bright, cobweb-free furnishings can banish claustrophobia with just a few dabs of the duster. Words by Luke Rix-Standing, PA Photos credit Alamy/PA

Just over a month on from the government closure of hospitality businesses and the beginning of the countrywide lockdown, I want to extend our warmest wishes to everyone during what is truly one of the toughest times we will see in our lifetime.
Your property is probably the most valuable asset you own. That’s why it’s important you do whatever you can to protect it from the risk of fraud. Property fraud happens in many ways, but typically a fraudster will impersonate a homeowner and forge
Hospitality owners and operators are becoming increasingly reliant on the government’s financial support and with tourism being one of the leading economical revenue streams in Bournemouth and all along the South Coast it is vital that business owners are able to access the support they so desperately need to survive.

They then either sell the property or use the property to raise a mortgage from a bank – and disappear with the money. There is an increased risk of fraud when • your property’s mortgage has been paid off • your property is empty or you’re letting it
From a small “group of mates discussing the ‘what just happened’ moment when we were closed” and following a desire to help the wider community to make the most of Government’s Grant availability, accessing and dealing with the Job Retention Scheme and pooling thoughts and fears on “the Phased Return”, The Wonky Table was born. The group has now spread across the whole conurbation including Christchurch, Poole, Bournemouth and Wimborne. Now with over 80 Hospitality Owner/Operator participants representing over 140+ venues from all over the conurbations the group is growing every day.

This won’t automatically block any changes to the register but
Staying connected is more important than ever. I only set the group up to share some thoughts back in March but TWT is getting bigger and bigger, we now want to make public our existence with all those in the Hospitality Industry in the hope that we can unite to share knowledge, resources and advice. The next step is getting ready (and making sure everyone is ready) for Post-C19. Ultimately, if there has ever been a time for us to come together, it is now.

You should also get legal advice and contact the police. For more information please go to www.landregistry.gov.uk/public/property-fraud

Could a night behind Cornish bars be the ultimate getaway? An historic jail has been converted into a trendy hotel. Prudence Wade passes her verdict. For my first holiday after lockdown easing, I must admit, I didn’t think I’d end up in prison. And yet that’s exactly where I’ve found myself. But it’s a far more pleasant experience than being unceremoniously flung into a dank cell. The Bodmin Jail Hotel is an imposing building nestled in the heart of Cornwall – all grey stone, tall towers and forbidding walls. It looks uninviting for a reason: in 1779 it opened as a functioning jail, housing criminals and conducting hangings right up until 1909.

Every room has a unique plaque telling the story of someone who stayed in that cell, which feels a touch ghoulish – although I was assured none of them are too bloody, in case children stay in the room. Mine, for example, is dedicated to a young boy called James Bassett, who was indicted in 1848 for arson. The chapel has been converted into a swanky restaurant, serving modern Cornish cuisine and numerous guilty pleasures. Normally, stained glass-style lights are projected onto the ceiling, but the system is going a bit haywire when I have dinner there. Ghosts maybe? Or perhaps just the teething problems you’d expect from a new hotel. If you can bear to tear yourself away – something that might be increasingly difficult, as there are plans to expand the property by adding a pool – there’s plenty to do. Attached to the hotel is the Bodmin Jail Experience (bodminjail.org; £12.50) where you can really dive into the dark history of the prison and the people who lived there. And then there’s the glorious countryside and coastal walks, where the fresh air is a life sentence I happily accept. Who knew staying in a jail cell could feel like such a release?

hardest to make look uncluttered and often feel claustrophobic and unwelcoming. Bulky freestanding wardrobes can end up being placed in positions just where they fit and not where they would look best or the easiest location to use, making a room seem cramped and uncomfortable. A well planned L-shape or sloping roof can add character to the room so long as the wardrobes are fitted correctly and into the corners, achieving a pleasing balance - essential in a room where one goes to rest and relax. Bedroom corners don’t need to be exact 90 degree angles to accommodate a well fitted corner wardrobe, built in bedroom cabinets can be hand crafted to follow the angle of the walls so units hug like a glove, internal drawers can still slide open and close with ease, and odd gaps can be neatly concealed with matching doors, drawers and pilasters.

Unlike our fitted wardrobe range, free standing furniture is often only available in limited colours and finishes, to keep production costs down. This is because our furniture

With our skilled tradespeople, we can also help to obtain the correct mood you seek, through thoughtful bedroom lighting. We can create a relaxed night time ambience or lift a dreary small room by fitting spot lights to light up every corner for those gloomy days. Freestanding bedroom wardrobes and furniture usually relies on overhead lights and bedside lamps which inevitably have unsightly cords to add clutter. By

INTERIORS | ST YLING SUMMER NEUTR ALS
How to put some punch into a pale palette Interiors experts share their thoughts on texture, natural materials and putting a little luxe into neutral schemes. Even if you’re not new to neutrals and love everything clean and serene, chances are you’re at your most creative come high summer – and looking for ways to buff up your beige and freshen those fawn floors. “Light neutrals are always popular during summer months, as we enjoy longer days and want to instil a sense of relaxation into our homes, reminding us of holiday travels,” says Tara Thallon, co-founder of Bound Concept, a new online modern design store offering a curated range of ‘objects of desire’ from emerging designers.
“To avoid neutrals looking too flat, mix in tactile pieces to bring rich texture and visual interest. Think handmade, imperfect ceramics with rough surfaces and accessories with strong, interesting silhouettes that will draw attention,” suggests Thallon. To further your sense of calm, consider introducing natural materials alongside neutrals. “Jutes, rattans, light woods – all hint towards nature and have calming, natural tones to complement neutral surroundings,” adds Thallon. If you’re not sure where to start, Jenna Choate, cofounder of Interior Fox, says working with cream, grey and taupe shades will allow you to create a base that’s easy to build upon, depending on the season or mood.

“Add in bursts of vibrant colour during the summer months, or sumptuous and earthy colours during the winter,” suggests Choate. “Find a colour that you feel drawn to the most. If you’re stuck for inspiration, have a look in your wardrobe to see what colours you naturally gravitate towards.” “We find green and blue are a winning combination, they reflect the colours you’d find outside and work perfectly with a neutral base. Whatever colour you choose, introduce it through soft furnishings, such as cushions, throws, and rugs. BELOW Hana Pink Recycled Cotton Throw, £29.50, Oliver Bonas | PA Photo/Oliver Bonas

Jemma Dayman, carpet and rugs buyer for Carpetright, says choosing a light and bright neutral shade for your floors, whether soft beige carpets or marble effect vinyl, ensures your room feels spacious and airy – making it the perfect choice for smaller spaces. “Pairing neutral tones with natural materials like rattan and raw woods, adds depth to your scheme whilst helping bring the outside in, for an additional summery feel,” says Dayman. “If you’re looking to tone down bolder themes, pairing throws and lighting with neutral flooring will ensure the room feels considered, rather than overpowering.” “Sophisticated and contemporary, soft summery neutral tones are the perfect base for an understated decor,” Dayman continues. “Enhancing natural light and brightening darker rooms, these versatile yet complementary shades will emanate warmth and unify existing colour schemes, creating a harmonious and relaxing atmosphere.”
“For a look that feels effortless, steer away from using the exact colour and instead opt for a tonal look.” As well as adding texture, creating interest through natural materials, such as decorative seashells or beach themed decos, channels holiday vibes. As Choate points out: “These materials are perfect for summer as they give a relaxed, lived-in feeling that transports you somewhere warm, like the coast.” To build on those soft furnishings, a fresh lick of paint is one of the easiest ways to bring a new lease of life into a room. “To create contrast, add in wooden cladding vertically,” suggests Choate. “This look is a contemporary take on the panelling trend. Complete with a curation of art that reflects your style, and finish with a mix of clashing cushions on the sofa.” Flooring can be given some new neutrals treatment too, especially if you’re looking for a significant revamp.

Tactile to the touch, texture is a word that comes up a lot in the world of neutral interiors. And if you’re starting out on your jute journey or pale palette, to echo your love of pared-back simplicity, in the same vein as ‘more is more’, you can never have too much texture. “When decorating with neutrals, texture is key,” says Chrissie Rucker, founder of the The White Company. “I like natural elements and lots of texture: weathered wood, slubby linens or marbled slate, all of which connect us back to nature and contrast well with crisp china and glassware, adding interest.” And for the finishing touch, what could be lovelier than the scent of freshly washed tumble-dried fluffy white towels, or sun-dried cotton sheets? Check out Yankee Candle’s collection of Pre-Fragranced Reed Starter Kits, from £16.49, to sit alongside their Candlelit Cabin Reed Diffuser, £19.99, in Fluffy Towels and Clean Cotton. OUTDOOR LIVING | SE ASIDE GARDEN
Want your own seaside garden? Here’s how you can get the look Make waves in your garden, with breezy seaside plants and themed accessories, writes Hannah Stephenson. With visits to the seaside looking likely this summer, you may find inspiration from gardens along the coast, whether it’s wind-resistant plants, or the charming accessories gardeners have added. Marcus Eyles, horticultural director at Dobbies Garden Centres (dobbies.com), says: “Plants for coastal gardens need to be resilient to salt, sun and wind. A classic seaside look has a relaxed feel, filled with greenery, ornamental grasses and pops of colour. “Turn challenges into opportunities, working with the natural landscape by choosing coastal plants that are native to the area.

“Enhancing the overall look of the space, they will feel right at home in seaside gardens, happily growing in temperamental conditions,” Eyles adds. “Depending on the location, warmth from the sea can protect from frost, so some more tender plants can be grown in these areas.” Eyles offers the following tips to give your garden a seaside feel… SEA BREEZY PLANT PICKS Sea thrift (armeria): (Pictured above) Adding a pretty pop of colour with deep pink foliage, sea thrifts are a charming addition to gardens by the coast. A versatile plant that’s easy to grow, and the long flowering season – April to August – will brighten up your outdoor space. You’ll often see these flowers along coast paths and cliff tops, confirming them as a top pick for an authentic coastal garden. Sea Holly (eryngium): (Pictured right) Making a bold statement, these spiky plants grow upright and are long lasting. With striking, thistle-like flowers, they prefer a sunny spot and dry, well-draining soil. They are also a favourite with bees and butterflies.

Mexican orange blossom (choisya): These large bushy plants are hardy shrubs, with glossy green leaves and white flowers. They are relatively low maintenance, growing happily in full sun, making them an ideal pick for coastal gardens. Elaeagnus: A good option to create a border, this shrub can grow rapidly, working well if you want to add some extra privacy and have a big enough space to accommodate it. With small fragrant flowers hidden among the foliage, it will flourish in full sun and will withstand salty breezes. Griselinia: Another good choice for a garden hedge, this evergreen shrub will survive windswept weather, acting as a barrier for other plants. Garden birds will be attracted to the small purple fruits produced in autumn. Ornamental grasses: A regular feature along British beaches, grasses will add height, structure and extra protection from windy conditions. Varieties we recommend include Calamagrostis arundinacea and Carex oshimensis ‘Evergold’, which has variegated foliage. Malva or lavatera (mallow): Ideal for attracting birds and butterflies, with large, nectar-rich open blooms, they can grow in a variety of soil types, from welldraining to heavy clay and sandy soils.

low-maintenance option, they just need occasional pruning and well-draining soil to keep them looking their best. WAVY COASTAL DESIGN For a laid-back, relaxed coastal garden look, incorporate weathered wood, pebbles and rounded pea gravel into the design scheme. Use clever planting to create windbreaks, with sweeping plantings of evergreen shrubs. Plant grasses in drifts to allow the wind to create the movement in the tall stems, and use perennial flowers in bold groups of complementary colours, with soft shades of creamy lilacs and lavender purple foliage. SHIP AHOY ACCESSORIES Garden accessories can be used to give a nod to the seaside. Add a selection of nautical striped cushions, throws, and a selection of recycled glass bottles and lanterns in shades of sea blue. Layering the space up with some finishing touches will soften the overall look and feel. Words by Hannah Stephenson, PA Photos credit: Alamy/PA
Perovskia (Russian sage): With gorgeous clusters of lavender-coloured flowers that bloom from midsummer to autumn, this plant is drought and salt tolerant. They can grow up to 3ft tall, adding height and interest in gardens. You can plant them on their own or in groups for more impact. Kniphofia (red hot poker): With green foliage and red, orange and yellow flowers, these will bring a touch of exotic. They can cope with exposed or sheltered conditions and prefer well-draining soil. Flowers will put on a long-lasting display and are popular with butterflies. Pittosporum: Slow growing, with sweetly scented white and yellow flowers and glossy leaves, this tall shrub makes another good windbreak in coastal gardens. A

Back to school! With a busy summer underway we are excited to hear all the great feedback from our customers who are able to relax and enjoy their garden transformations. Whilst we all bask in the sunshine there is no harm in letting our minds wander to the autumn ahead. Before we know it the children will be heading back to embark upon a new school year, therefore it is a great time to consider whether the play areas in your local schools or public spaces need updating to ensure our little ones are not only entertained and enjoying themselves but have safe and durable equipment to let loose on. We offer a wide variety of products which would be a great asset to any school or local play area, including benches, play modules, decking, gates, fences and even planters. They can come in a variety of colours including purple, pink, red, orange, yellow, green, blue, brown, black, grey and beige which removes the need for painting and staining, so you can choose your very own unique colour theme.
Our products are a great investment because they are much more durable and lower maintenance than their wooden counterparts, so will last over 50 years and save any future expense. Being made from recycled plastic our products do not splinter or absorb moisture like wood does, therefore it doesn’t rot and will last infinitely longer. We have had the pleasure of working on many play areas over the years, helping schools

It is heavy, durable, virtually indestructible and will not need to be replaced. In short, it is worry free!

The purpose- built showroom allows customers the chance to experience both of the brand’s flagship models; Speedback GT and Mini Remastered. The new London site serves alongside David Brown Automotive’s headquarters in Silverstone, where the company has been based since 2017, having relocated there from their original roots of Coventry. With space to display up to three cars indoors and three outdoors at once, the new London showroom offers customers to experience both Speedback GT and Mini Remastered in everyday conditions with test drives available by appointment. ROAD TEST: A U D I A 6 AVA N T B L A C K E D I T I O N If you’re talking premium cars then as far as we Brits go that invariably means German. There’s a good reason for that, the Germans do know how to properly bolt a car together to give that premium feel. My test Audi A6 Avant 55 TFSI quattro S tronic lived up to those German premium expectations, but then at a shade under £70k as tested it should match up to the highest levels of quality. The A6 is a large car normally but in Avant form it is huge, I can’t imagine anything that wouldn’t be swallowed whole by the capacious load area. The only problem, as with all estates, is load height but the Audi is still a performer on that dimension too. There are acres of proper carpeting, even in the luggage area. None of your cheap underfelt covering here, and that feeling of quality extends throughout the car. Power from the 3.0-litre turbocharged petrol V6 is impressive, but even more impressive is the economy of circa 32-33 mpg during my week with the car. The Black Edition I was testing comes with kit aplenty, even so there was over £9k of options (yes £9K) including a superb panoramic glass roof at £1,950. As with all VAG products
AU G U ST 2 1
126
digitalisation has arrived but to be fair the A6 has a quite intuitive system even though buttons would be simpler and easier. On the road the Audi is a smooth and very refined performer and despite the Black Edition having stiffened and lowered suspension the ride is pretty decent even over rougher surfaces. If your ultimate wish is for comfort though then the non-Black edition suspension is probably a better choice. Flappy paddle gear changes, superb engine and steering means the A6 handles surprisingly well for such a large car. My only real criticism of the Audi is the over nannying specification of the driver assist, in particular the fact that it decides to slow the car, quite dramatically in some instances, for no reason. A car waiting perfectly safely to turn right across my path caused the Audi to panic, likewise a parked car with barely a wheel’s width on the road. On the plus side the cruise control that adjusts to the speed limit of the road is a great idea. However, most of the time I switched it all off! Verdict, a near perfect, very classy, sports holdall.

ROAD TEST: C ITRO EN C 4 If you have looked at the price of most new cars you’ll have gathered they aren’t cheap, even small hatchbacks are not necessarily in the affordable bracket. However, value for money can be had from mainstream manufacturers if you are looking for a family car. Citroen’s new C4 provided an enjoyable week’s motoring and with prices starting from a smidgen over £21,000 it represents incredibly good value for your motoring money. There are petrol and diesel engines, manual or automatic gears and even full electric power. Standard equipment across the range includes 18” wheels, LED lights, Apple Car Play and Android Auto, Bluetooth, height adjustable front seats, automatic dual zone air conditioning, rear parking sensors, auto lights and wipers and heated and powered door mirrors.
The first thing that strikes you about the Citroen is refinement, even under hard acceleration, when 3-cylinders generally sound like an over excited lawnmower, the Citroen is remarkably quiet. It has a feeling of quality, not something that has always been a hallmark of Citroen’s past.
My test model was the mid-table Shine version with prices starting from a still very reasonable £24,010, bringing a significant ramp up in the standard equipment stakes. Petrol power for the range comes from a 1.2-litre, 3-cylinder turbocharged unit in two power outputs, 129hp and 153hp. In my case the 129hp engine mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox.
A nice slick gearchange and well-chosen ratios means the C4 bowls along with little extra effort required from the driver, and it’s a comfortable place to be seated. It’s no hot hatch and you certainly won’t want to be hustling it along twisty roads, even though the famously comfortable Citroen suspension produces less body roll than you might imagine.
It’s a very modern looking car with swooping lines, especially to the rear, but access and egress remains comfortable and most who saw my test car loved the looks. This is a car aimed at the family in my view, and it does a great job of providing practical, well-equipped transport at an affordable price. As with sister manufacturer Peugeot the quality has come on in leaps and bounds over the last few years, yet you do get a distinctly different car to any Peugeot stablemates. I loved the C4, it has distinct echoes of Citroen’s quirky past but in a very useable, modern form and is a great value package.

VA U X H A L L L AUNCH EIGHTH G E N E R AT I O N A S T R A Vauxhall has revealed its all-new, eighth generation of the Astra. The success story of Vauxhall’s bestseller began over 40 years ago. With the all-new Astra, the British manufacturer is now opening the next chapter: for the first time, the compact class model is available with electric drive.
R O A D T E S T: R E N A U LT M E G A N E S P O RT TO U R ER R .S. LI N E The French have a reputation for some rather advanced mechanical design as well as a certain aesthetic flair. Renault have an additional automotive string to their bow in F1 racing, and especially with the new Team Alpine where hopes for success are high.
of around 30 miles which is enough for a modest daily commute. As ever a home charger is essential to get the best from the car’s electric power.
Success is very evident in the latest Megane Sport Tourer. Despite the rebranding of estates as tourers, sport tourers and shooting brakes they are still designed with practicality in mind. Although not the largest estate the Megane still has a useful load area over a hatchback.
The interior of the Megane has an air of quality, much improved of late, and there’s a decent size touchscreen built into the fascia, no ‘bolt-on iPad’ look here. It really is a very nice place to be accommodated. Unlike so many cars the digitalisation is at a sensible level – rivals please take note – and there’s a choice of driving modes to make the most of the hybrid options.
Prices for the range start from £23,500 but in the case of my RS-Line Plug-in hybrid it’s a somewhat hefty £32,995. That’s a near £6,000 premium over the nearest pure petrol stablemate, but the Plugin hybrid develops an extra 20hp and carries additional features including that plug-in capability.
On the road there’s plenty of power for quick getaways and overtakes and it’s mostly carried out in a serene and audibly calm atmosphere. There’s a slightly sporty edge but this is no traffic light grand prix car or point-to-point racer, but it acquits itself well soaking up bumps and undulations on our roads along the way.
Most plug-in hybrids have a short pure electric range, being designed for the daily commute. Typically, they recharge in less time because of the smaller capacity battery and most importantly there are no range concerns as you have, in the Megane’s case, a 1.6-litre petrol engine to back you up. There’s a pretty decent all-electric range
All-in-all this is a very accomplished car, lots of standard equipment and the look and feel of a quality build. The hybrid element adds to the potential practicality but at its price there’s some stiff competition from more premium badges. That said I would still very happily have kept hold of this one.

Vauxhall will offer the new Astra in two performance levels as a plug-in hybrid. In addition, there are versions with highly efficient petrol and diesel engines in combination with six-speed manual and eight-speed automatic transmissions. It will launch this year as a five-door. After the Mokka, Crossland and Grandland SUVs, the new Astra is Vauxhall’s first hatchback to interpret the brand’s new look. A design that stretches across the front of the car, makes the new Astra look even wider. At the rear, there’s a centrally mounted Griffin, the vertically aligned high-mounted brake lamp and the tail lamps are energysaving LED, as is all exterior lighting. The Griffin emblem also doubles as the latch for the tailgate. The new Astra will be available from the start of sales with powerful plug-in hybrid electric drive as well as highly efficient petrol and diesel engines, electrifying Vauxhall’s compact class model for the first time in the brand’s history. Vauxhall will open the order books for the new Astra this autumn. The first customers will take delivery of their cars early next year. Further details including UK pricing and specification will be announced at the on sale d ate.

ROAD TEST: K IA SO R ENTO In the current climate (if you’ll excuse the pun) SUVs are viewed as environmental villains, automotive polluters of the very worst kind. The truth is that many SUVs are now hybrids with smaller combustion engines, so the days of every SUV being oversized and having a large, petrol or diesel addicted engine is not the full story. Kia’s newly launched Sorento models and the self-charging hybrid Sorento in particular is a good case in point. With its 1.6-litre petrol engine bolstered by a 64 kw battery it delivers 40 mpg economy and emits only 158 g/km Co2, which is low for a large SUV, in what is a very spacious 7-seat family holdall with all benefits of proper off-road capability. My test model was a self-charging hybrid so removes any range concerns, or the need for an expensive home charger, or dealing with our somewhat fragmented (I’m being polite!) public charging network. Priced from £39,360 the Sorento lineup offers both plug-in and self-charging hybrids and all models look suitably imposing. Standard equipment across the range of Sorento models includes heated seats and steering wheel, smart cruise
control, LED headlights, reversing camera, dual zone air conditioning for all seats, auto dimming mirrors, auto wipers and lights, Apple Car Play and Android Auto. My top of the range self-charging version is the automotive equivalent of the Ritz, adding such items as leather, powered adjustment of the seats, privacy glass, heated rear seats, ventilated front seats, keyless entry and start, power tailgate, powered folding door mirrors, along with navigation, wireless charging and a Bose sound system onto the entry level list of equipment. Costing £46,945 you would expect it to be well equipped and when you add all the above items to the level of tech, it doesn’t

disappoint. There are a myriad of safety features including a head-up display and a clever speed limit based intelligent cruise control, all-wheel-drive and the clever hybrid system which charges itself from the car’s engine. It not only removes those range concerns but provides a cleaner emissions record than would normally be the case with a more traditionally powered SUV of this size. If I were pernickety then some of the controls are not especially intuitive, the layout of the dash controls is a little fussy, would ownership would soon bring familiarity. It is a minor point in a car that has a distinct feeling of luxury with its comfortable, quilted leather seats, hushed interior and solidity of build quality.

Š K O D A E N YA Q I V L AUNCHES IN UK SHOWROOMS The new Enyaq introduces a new way for customers to tailor the car to their tastes and requirements. Instead of selecting from traditional trim levels, customers choose the battery size they need, select an interior design and then personalise their vehicle from a comprehensive range of equipment packs and individual options. From launch, the range consists of two variants; Enyaq iV 60 Nav and Enyaq iV 80 with 62kWh and 82kWh battery packs respectively. Six design selections are available; Loft, Lodge, Lounge, Suite, ecoSuite and SportLine, all of which offer a different interior look and materials. The Enyaq iV is the first ŠKODA production model to be based on Volkswagen Group’s new modular electric car platform. The allelectric SUV has been awarded the top five stars and the best-ever grading for occupant protection in the European New Car Assessment Programme (EURO NCAP) tests.
S P E E D L I M I T S – 3 0 M P H -V- 2 0 M P H New research by IAM RoadSmart says that support for reducing the speed limit on all urban roads to 20mph has increased in recent years with almost half of drivers now in favour. Overall, 44% of drivers surveyed agree all current 30mph limits should be replaced with a 20mph limit. Well, 44% is not exactly ‘almost half’ of the survey. Areas outside schools were seen as the highest priority for reducing speed limits from 89% of respondents. Few could reasonably argue that a 20mph speed limit outside schools during arrival and departure times makes sense and should be implemented. Busy urban shopping areas and housing too.
AU G U ST 2 1
130
The IAM’s survey was from just 1004 respondents, hardly a conclusive vote for a blanket reduction in urban speed limits. There is a danger that drivers spend too long looking at their speedometer than the road in front of them. Even the IAM’s Director of Policy & Research, Neil Greig, said: “Improving road safety is key but a blanket ban on reducing 30mph speed limits to 20mph speed limits isn’t necessarily the best route. Each situation needs to be decided on a case-bycase basis, with local considerations and consultation playing an important role.” Let’s hope local councils take a similarly sensible attitude when considering such proposals.

ROAD TEST: VAUXHALL M O K K A We’re used to manufacturers launching specification changes and styling tweaks but Vauxhall has gone somewhat further with their latest Mokka. It’s so different that during my week’s test I had two previous generation Mokka owners asking me what I was driving. In a way that’s not surprising, because one of the things lacking on the new Mokka is the name Vauxhall. There’s the Griffin badge but trying to find the word Vauxhall is a harder task, it’s nestled in small script on the Griffin badges.
when keys and rings are in close contact over a period of time. There’s the inevitable digitalisation with few buttons, but it’s far from the worst I have encountered, even so ‘bring back buttons!’ One issue in extremely hot weather is a lack of decent ventilation due to a dearth of vents and poor positioning. The centre vent is too low down to direct cool air to your face. This results in having the fan on a higher setting with resultant noise to the otherwise very refined cabin.
My SRi Premium model was finished in metallic grey with black trim and a red flash above the windows, making it a head turner and for all the right reasons. The interior is equally adventurous with a modern look and judicious use of highlights to remove any trace of styling sobriety.
On the road the 1.2-litre, 3-cylinder petrol engine has decent get-up-and-go and produces a lovely thrumming noise under hard acceleration. The 8-speed automatic gears are smooth and quick to react and there are flappy paddles on the steering wheel when fancy pretending you’re an SUV F1 racer. There’s commendably little body roll and the ride comfort is good even over the roughest roads. While interior space is not at all bad, the boot errs on the small side but remains capacious enough for most owners. The Mokka endeared itself very quickly, the over excited lawn mower soundtrack under hard acceleration, the modern looks, excellent equipment and driving experience. It stands out as something different to the usual compact SUV crowd. It’s a good job as although the range starts from a reasonable £20,740, my SRi Premium weighs in at £27,455 and there’s no shortage of competition, not least from the likes of Toyota and Peugeot.
There’s generous use of piano black on the dash and centre console, which does make me wonder about longer term durability

The Christchurch Food Festival is back in 2021 and will take place over the August Bank Holiday and they look forward to welcoming everyone back to a glorious celebration of great food and drink. The festival will remain free to attend. The event will only take place on Christchurch Quay this year. If there is any requirement to manage social distancing by this time, the High Street is a space that it would be impossible to control – and the safety of everyone – the traders, staff and visitors – is paramount to how they will be managing this year’s event. As an extra aperitif to the main event, they will also be running a series of pop-up restaurant events in the beautiful setting of the Quayside in the days running up to the festival. Follow @ChristchurchFoodFest on Facebook to stay up to date.
The art gallery will be transformed into a watercolour paradise, watercolours created for the Ladybird book classic ‘What to Look for in Summer’, are on show. Plus a unique outdoor gallery space has been created to host local artist’s vibrant digital illustrations for the new Ladybird edition. MOT TISFONT www.nationaltrust.org.uk/mottisfont
