Fall is definitely one of my favorite seasons! Besides my birthday being in November, it’s also a favorite because of all the gorgeous warm colors and textures found in nature this time of year. Jory Gattis Dickinson has some fabulous suggestions to pull your fall look together. Shannon Gidney discusses the importance of details in creating an amazing interior, and Maxine Burt explains how to play with accents of fall colors. IBB visual merchandiser Meghan Sebren lists her top five essentials for your breakfast nook, and you won’t want to miss the tour inside a new luxury condo project by Michael Reese at The Corvalla in Frisco. Pantone® PMS 15-1247 TCX A bold, bright, and lively orange with joyous vibes that instantly energize any room. A great complement to any wall needing a pop of color with a positive feel. Adding tantilizing tangerine to classic neutral colors creates a striking combination for this fall.

PRO TIP: Always sample the paint in your space before diving in and painting the entire room. Just because it looks fabulous in your friend’s home, doesn’t mean it will look equally as stunning in yours. There are many factors which influence how paint looks in a space.

DESIGNER TIPS nice metal sculptures in black and bronze tones. Hammered metals are really great for this time of year. Adding a sheepskin throw over a chair or on top of an existing rug enhances the coziness.

3.

Swap out a few pieces of your art for ones that have an earthier or warmer feeling. There are some great oils, watercolors, or giclées that can work magic in the room. When you find that statement piece, an easy trick to making the room décor feel put together is to play off the colors in the art for your pillows and accessory selection.

Create cozy gathering areas in your home. For instance, relocate the console table or chest that is in the entry and put a cozy bench with lots of pillows or maybe just one dark, furry pillow. It becomes the perfect place to change shoes and will add a welcoming site for visitors.

5. TIPS FALL BY KAREN HOLLOWAY, IBB DESIGNER karen@ibbdesign.com

FALL – The cozy décor season has begun! Warmer colors and textures become integral parts of making our home warm and inviting for the upcoming gatherings of family and friends. Here are a few design tips to make your home a welcoming abode this autumn.

1.

Trade the pastels and cooler colors for warmer colors like tones of orange, caramel, black, and even

charcoal gray. Neutral colors like cream, white, and light gray used in year-round upholstery make it an easy transition to change out colors with vases, books, and lots of throw pillows.

2.

Less is definitely more in the summer months, but the fall calls for layering of interesting textural accessories. Put the colorful glass accessories away and bring in a few

Paint an accent wall in the darker hue of your existing walls and then hang a multicolored textile on it for a casual look in a study or breakfast room or use it as the headboard in the guest room. With the abundance of beautiful fabrics available today, it will be a challenge to settle on just one textile.

6.

Don’t forget the lighting. Dim those overhead lights and use earthy and textural table and floor lamps. Consider changing the daylight bulbs in some areas to add more ambiance.

ADDING

Permanent Botanicals

TO THE MIX

This has been the year of the dead plant at BY RITA SKAGERBERG, my house. I try so hard at the start of planting IBB ASSISTANT VISUAL MERCHANDISER new greenery or florals, and then life happens. rita@ibbdesign.com Photo by Dan Piassick

I get busy and distracted by the day-to-day onslaught of adulting, and I feel my dream of being a plant lady dying right alongside the dry and brittle husks of plants long forgotten or underwatered. But then, I had a revelation. Having a green thumb is not necessary for placing wellchosen blooms that instantly lift an interior— You just need to have an eye for gorgeous maintenance-free permanent greenery. Using permanent botanical florals gives you the opportunity to think outside the planter’s box for placement. Since you’re not having to consider the aftermath of a leaking or muddy pot, you don’t have to limit your selections to just tables and sideboards. Consider accenting an étagère, your nightstands, or a mantelpiece that still needs a little something. Something colorful and striking will always be a conversation-starter, and adding plants (permanent or not) instantly creates color and texture in any space. A combination of the right greenery or floral and the ultimate vase can really amplify your desired aesthetic. Think of the money, time, and energy you will save by having permanent, low-maintenance florals, especially with UV protectants. Your house guests will ask you, “How do you juggle it all?” And you know what your answer will be? The verdurous permanent florals selection at IBB, including a variety of blooms, greenery, vases, and subtle embellishments that complement any space, particularly the new additions from The Shay Geyer Collection. Warning! Our permanent plants look SO real, so make sure someone doesn’t accidentally water them.

While it’s still a little toasty to turn over the closet with the fall wardrobe, it’s right on time to start bringing those fall layers into your home! Each spring and fall, I do a deep clean on rugs, upholstery, ceiling fans, baseboards, and the list goes on. After I’ve pulled everything off and taken it out, I always get inspired to come back with something fresh! I always preach about investing in classic timeless pieces, and like so many of my colleagues and clients, I have a full secret stash of accessories I swap out Photo by Dan Piassick periodically! Whether you have a “Monica Closet,” a “Narnia Cabinet,” or just a hot mess of goodies you hide from your significant other, it’s time to pull out those fall favorites! In my house, the cooler weather seasons are all about blending textures to create visual

warmth and coziness. Faux fur throws, mohairs, and cut velvets have always been staple pieces, but as of late, I’ve fallen in love with hair on hide accents, embellished leathers, and who doesn’t love a good shearling! These less conventional elements present a less conventional and more updated approach than what we’ve seen in years past but still leave you a lot of play space.

FALL

is in the air!

When I started with this space, it was filled with soft blues, greens, and greys, but by simply swapping out the bedding to feature some richer tones, adding a camel coverlet, and then splashing in some fun tribal and embellished moments, the space felt completely different. Tucking the black hide with laser-cut embellishment in with the duvet was the icing on

the cake and provides that unexpected element that would be insanely fun in any space! Other easy updates can include seasonal botanicals and layering smaller art pieces with richer color tones over more neutral pieces. Just remember, when it comes to fall layers, less is rarely more!

WINE & DINE RESTAURANT DESIGN

When my client, Michelle Bonds, reached out to me to help her with the furniture selections and finish-out of her new wine bar, Trova Wine and Market, I was thrilled! Her vision of an upscale wine bar, full of light and soft bright colors, was a departure from the “typical” wine bar. She also wanted to incorporate retail into the space. So, if you are wanting a recommendation of wines you can take to go, the sommelier can cater to your needs with interesting selections. Being able to help Michelle, a female entrepreneur, find her unique style during a global pandemic certainly presented its challenges, but the final result has been so well received that it was a challenge I am thrilled I took on. As a frequent visitor of Trova, I am always amazed with the curated selection of wine and food fare, so I wanted to make sure I incorporated that feeling of intrigue when someone visits the wine bar. As the project began, we started with a space that was bare with the exception of the stunning wood floors. They had a lovely light finish and worn look, so we decided to incorporate them into the overall design. The goal was to make the space bright and light but still warm and inviting.

To create a bit of “wow factor” in the front, we commissioned custom art pieces featuring large palms in blushes and greens to tie together all the colors from our color palette in a fresh way. I am also a firm believer that wash rooms should never be overlooked, so we went with a color block effect for a fun yet timeless feel. Check them out while you’re there.

Our color palette of blushes, emeralds, and of course wine, did the trick. We went bold with the emerald green bar, and contrasted it with blush barstools for a pop of personality. The classic component came through with our marble tabletops and black chairs. The flow was also a great topic of conversation, since we wanted a layout that allowed for maximization of what all the space has to offer. Michelle knew there would be tasting parties, events, as well as regular day-in/day-out business, so we took advantage of the larger back room. It is a versatile space that

can be set up as a shared tabletop or used for large parties and events. Along the way there were challenges in construction and trying to procure materials during a pandemic, but Michelle handled those challenges with a clear vision for the business she was trying to build and

did a fabulous job. Working for IBB, another femaleowned business, I am thrilled to get to be a part of and support other women bringing their visions to life. DESIGNER TIPS

SHANNON GIDNEY, IBB DESIGNER & SALES MANAGER shannon@ibbdesign.com | @designershannongidneyibb on Instagram Photography by Audrie Dollins

It’s all in the details for me! The finishing touches are the items that really bring a space to life, give a glimpse into home, and aid in telling its story. It’s amazing how the addition of such small details can have such an impact on the overall feeling and design of a home. The final touches go deeper than just strategicallyplaced accessories. They should be a collection of meticulously thought-out items, acquired from near and far: memorable photographs, a stack of cocktail books that tie the colors and one’s interests together, or a favored candle. These are the pieces that make a home come alive, all intentionally placed to tell a story. Fresh flowers have an unmatched ability to breathe life into a room, creating a welcoming feeling as well as a fresh scent throughout. Permanent botanicals are the next best thing. They are a one-time purchase, real-to-the touch, and don’t require sunlight and water to shine! Lighting is another big one for me. I love a room where pools of light create the intended mood of the space. Lighting is so critical, and light fixtures can often be seen as the jewelry of the home. Using a combination of table and floor lamps on timers and placing chandeliers on dimmers all facilitate creating a nice ambiance. Personalizing with the soft goods such as pillows, textural throws, and drapery are an absolute must. Rugs also fall under this category, as they provide texture, softness underfoot, and are key to customizing the space. Soft goods really can sway the style of a room!

28 IBB AT HOME

Organic and simple are the names of the game in my book, along with personal items that create the most curated, thoughtful, and inviting spaces. It’s the final touches, all the details, of a project that excite me the most since they make such a huge impact.

M

Many of us are looking for ways to freshen things up these days, whether it’s repurposing a space to meet our changing needs or creating a much-needed sanctuary in our homes. While our homes used to function primarily as a pit stop in a flurry of activities—from work or school to travel to other events outside the home—they have become the place where many of us have spent the bulk of our time this past year. Before you get started on a new home project, learn some common remodeling mistakes and our tips for avoiding them! Mistake #1: Looking to TV for your budget & timeline While home makeover shows can be a good source of inspiration, they are not a reliable source of information for real-world budgets or timelines. In fact, the reality shows’ false budgets and compressed timelines perpetuate wildly unrealistic expectations for homeowners. Do some research to familiarize yourself with the general costs of building materials and home remodeling services in your area. Having this base of knowledge will help you plan your budget and determine value in terms of quality vs. cost. You will also feel more comfortable when discussing numbers with potential remodelers. “In TV land, everything seems so easy and inexpensive. In a half-hour to one-hour framework, a project that could take months of wrangling, permitting, and contracts in real life, gets compressed into a lightning-fast segment with a

30 IBB AT HOME

happy ending.” —Mandy Mills (via Washington Post) Mistake #2: Failing to identify the root of the problem(s) Another common home remodeling mistake is understanding your motivation. Are you unhappy with your space because you find the space bland, or is the problem a bit more complex? To find out, simply ask yourself “Why?” several times. For example, “This kitchen is not working for me.” Why? “Well, there isn’t enough space.” Why? “The island is too big.” Why? “The island needs to provide considerable storage in the kitchen.” Why? “Because there is not much cabinet space.” Now you have identified your specific problem: Your storage needs are not being met. So, while painting the cabinetry and replacing the countertops would brighten the space, those efforts likely would not have addressed the core issue. “If you define the problem correctly, you almost have the solution.” —Steve Jobs Mistake #3: Chasing trends instead of discovering your personal style When starting a remodel, we recommend homeowners begin by looking inward. What styles suit you/your family? What colors bring you joy? What type of aesthetic are you consistently drawn to? Discovering styles that genuinely resonate with you, beyond what is “great for re-sale value” or simply embracing the latest trends is crucial to optimize

the ROI of your remodel. After all, trends will change, but style is forever! Once you’ve identified a few key design elements that reflect your interior style, that’s when we suggest looking outward for supporting inspiration. By being mindful of the aesthetics that suit you and collecting aspirational imagery, you will have a better sense of the stylistic changes that will elevate your project. “Be faithful to your own taste, because nothing you really like is ever out of style.” —Billy Baldwin Mistake #4: Biting off more than you can chew In the remodeling space, as with business in general, three key elements need to balance in order to have a successful remodel: time, money, and quality. In an ideal world, we could have all the items on our dream list, have it done quickly, and get it for free. In reality, we can have two of those three at once, and that comes with tradeoffs. Sometimes it makes sense to do some or all the work yourself. Maybe you have specialty training and the project is small, so saving money is the most important of those three priorities. Maybe the timeline is the most important, so you work with professionals to get the project done to the standard you are looking for on time, even if it costs some extra money. After having watched several clients suffer the frustration of trying to take on every detail of a project themselves, hiring a professional project team to work with you to find quality sub-contractors, help make design decisions, navigate code, and keep track of the budget and timeline is more often than not a worthwhile investment. By leaving the details to the experts, you free up time to spend on the more important things. “Deciding what NOT to do is as important as deciding what to do.” —Jessica Jackley

“The single biggest problem in communication is the illusion that it has taken place.” —George Bernard Shaw Mistake #5: Not communicating with your project team Design and building, especially on a custom level, are like commissioning a custom garment. There are a lot of personal details that need to be considered in the design. Be prepared to share the details you discovered about the styles that inspire you, the problems that motivated the renovation, and the goals you want to achieve with your renovation. The more your project team knows about you, your design preferences, and your home improvement goals, the better they’ll be able to provide a personalized experience and to deliver results that meet your expectations. Remember… They’re not mind readers! “The single biggest problem in communication is the illusion that it has taken place.” —George Bernard Shaw Mistake #6: Introducing “scope creep” “Scope creep” is the term used when the project wish list expands as the remodel progresses. This can become incredibly costly and cause delays in your project, so be sure to step back to reflect on your initial goals so you can determine whether or not the new wish list items help achieve that and are worth any potential costs or delays. “Begin with the end in mind.” —Stephen R. Covey

“If you define the problem correctly, you almost have the solution.” —Steve Jobs

Keep these tips in mind, along with a positive attitude, and you’ll be enjoying the results of your remodel soon enough! Huntington Remodeling is a full-service remodeler and member of the Highland & Huntington Homes homebuilding family. Entertaining season is right around the corner - I know! Now is the time to confirm you have all the essentials to ensure everyone has a seat at the table with everything they might need.

ESSENTIALS for your BREAKFAST NOOK

1. TABLE Yes, a table is a pretty obvious essential, but the right one makes a big difference! With the elimination of formal dining rooms happening more often, the breakfast nook has become the main dining area. That means it needs to be equipped with all the benefits of larger crowds. A table with a leaf is a great way to modify the space to accommodate more people. Drop-leaf tables can quickly expand your hosting abilities. 2. SEATING Seating has come a long way and so have the fabrics! Choosing a performance fabric for your chairs helps you keep the style while still being practical. Performance fabrics are specifically made to withstand wear and tear while making it easy to clean those inevitable stains. Benches and settees are also an excellent way to change it up and accommodate more people when necessary.

32 IBB AT HOME

BY MEGHAN SEBREN, IBB VISUAL MERCHANDISER

meghan@ibbdesign.com @meghansebren on Instagram

3. STORAGE Having appropriate storage is crucial to making sure you can find everything when you need it. A buffet keeps tablecloths, placemats, and napkins out of sight and won’t take up precious space in your kitchen cabinets. Open shelving keeps smaller areas looking more spacious. If you are short on space, a serving cart tucked in the corner can hold all your necessities as well. 4. LIGHTING Changing out your light fixture is an instant way to take your space up a notch. Base the size of your chandelier on the scale of the table as opposed to the room as a whole. Dimmers also provide a relaxing ambiance and help control the atmosphere. Layering in lighting, such as lamps on a buffet, can also provide some mood lighting for multi-purpose occassions. 5. PLANTS Plants instantly bring a dimension to a room that creates a relaxing and serene aura. They also bring in shades of green, which instantly liven up any space. Permanent botanicals help people who do not have a green thumb enjoy the atmosphere greenery brings. Another benefit is being able to move them from room to room without having to worry about all the elements to keep it alive.

Bringing

FALL Into Your HOME BY MAXINE BURT, IBB DESIGNER

Photography by Dan Piassick

Bringing fall into your home can be achieved through layering in the colors and textures synonymous with the season. Colors associated with a gorgeous sunset like red, orange, pink, and yellow can be energizing and positive. These colors can also feel cozy and create a warm and inviting ambiance for your home. If you’re someone who loves to switch out accent colors seasonally, start with neutral basics. Having your larger investment pieces like your sofa or sectional fabric upholstered in something neutral allows you to easily switch out accent colors per your current mood or time of the year.

WHAT’S A GREAT

DESIGN TIP? BY WILL SMITH, IBB DESIGNER

will@ibbdesign.com @willtsmith on Instagram

THROW IN SOME PLAID Of the numerous ways one can bring a hint of fall into their home, one of my absolute favorites is the use of plaid. Whether it's brightly colored or sullenly hued, a splash of this pattern can go a long way in your home. Try a few accent pillows and a throw to add softness and character to your sofa or chairs. If you’re feeling bold, maybe some year around draperies in this pattern can bring a sense of elegant style to a sitting room or office: Think Ralph Lauren chic. Try it for yourself and let me know what you think!

BY KAY LEWIS, IBB DESIGNER

kay@ibbdesign.com @mkaylewis on Instagram

COLOR WITH ACCENT CHAIRS Neutral colored sofas have been the standard of the furniture industry for several years; however, to give your room the personality and color you desire, we recommend incorporating some pattern and color on your chairs. Add a few throw pillows to the sofa, and all the pieces magically pull together!

BY PAM HOOD, IBB DESIGNER pam@ibbdesign.com

CREATE A FALL-READY AMBIANCE Swap out your lightweight linens for a plush wool or cashmere throw. Add pillows in velvet, cowhide, or nubby fabrics for a textured cozy feel. Spice up your colors by adding jewel tones like burgundy, rust, olive, or gold in accessories like vases, bowls, or art. Switch out some of your floral or greenery arrangements for fall leaf arrangements in golds and rust colors. Remember your scents to round out the atmosphere. Replace your citrus or floral scented candles with cinnamon or pumpkin spice.

BY LINDSAY STEUDTNER, IBB JUNIOR DESIGNER lindsay@ibbdesign.com

BRING IN THE SUCCULENTS Artificial succents are beautiful and low maintenance. They bring a nice touch of life and greenery to a space which takes your décor to the next level. My favorite spots for succulent arrangements are kitchen islands, coffee tables, bookshelves, bathroom vanities, and nightstands. The Asher and Parker from The Shay Geyer Collection are great options to consider placing in your home.

DINING ROOM A live edge dining table with deep amethyst velvet chairs seats twelve. We designed a custom Swarovski chandelier to add an elegant layer of luxury. Succulent artwork by Botanical Mix brings life into the room, and an abstract rug adds an array of color. The most talked about feature of the room is the mirrored “puzzle piece” installation on the back wall.

FORMAL POWDER BATH

This powder bath is a true showstopper! We used a slab of agate precious stone to create a backlit floating vanity with an integrated sink. Grass cloth wallpaper in a deep amethyst hue and a rose gold faucet and pendants complete the design.

KITCHEN

Rich espresso-stained custom cabinetry provides contrast to the white quartz countertops and backsplash. Every modern amenity was thought of to include in this dream kitchen. A gorgeous light fixture feels like jewelry in the space. White barstools upholstered in a vegan leather provide a worry-free, family-friendly option.

BREAKFAST NOOK The bespoke dining table in a cobalt blue stain and acrylic base makes an artistic statement in the nook. The dining chairs add a pop of color to the room.

IBB AT HOME 59

FORMAL LIVING ROOM 60 IBB AT HOME

The painted “drip” artwork brings synergy to the strong pops of color used in the upholstery and accessories in the formal living room. Cobalt blue and fire engine red offer a bright and happy greeting as you enter the room.

PRIMARY BEDROOM 62 IBB AT HOME

The fireplace, covered in matte black three-dimensional tiles, adds a unique, modern touch to the room. A custom upholstered bed and brass pendants with black Swarovski crystals add to the luxurious design. Black velvet blackout motorized drapery can create a dark and cozy sleeping environment or open up the large window to allow the natural light to flood in.

IBB AT HOME 63

PRIMARY BATH Striato marble covers the floors of the bathroom, which allows God’s beauty to create a stunning pattern for the floors. His and her vanity areas are separated by a large round marble shower. LED lights can be programmed to change the ambiance at the vanities as well as in the shower. The same three-dimensional tile on the fireplace in the bedroom also envelops the tub area. Brass plumbing and Swarovski pendants add high style to the space. A hot pink and brass vanity chair and original artwork bring in pops of color to the makeup vanity.

HANDBAG & SHOE CLOSET

Ample shelving keeps her shoes and handbags organized. We accessorized the shelves by mixing in fashion books, photo frames, and other memorabilia to style the room. A custom LED crystal chandelier hangs over the sitting area with fun patterned chairs, an acrylic table, and a Tibetan lamb’s wool ottoman. A favorite piece of artwork featuring Marilyn Monroe adds a playful vibe.

IBB AT HOME 67

SECONDARY BEDROOM We used a palette of black, white, bubblegum pink, and Tiffany Blue to create the design for one of their daughter’s bedrooms. Hunt Slonem bunny wallpaper covers the bed wall, and bubblegum pink pillows with one of her initials add a girly accent to the bedding. Tiffany Blue nightstands flank the upholstered tufted bed. Functional drapery was designed using the fabric in the same bunny pattern. A white dresser with silver striping and acrylic hardware doubles as a changing table and additional storage. An acrylic crib with commissioned artwork is opposite the king size bed. A swivel rocker in a black and white performance fabric is the perfect spot for bedtime stories.

A plush navy patterned carpet grounds the room’s palette of blue and green. Modern monogrammed shams add to the navy and white bedding on the king size bed. A large window seat can also serve as an extra spot to unwind and take a nap.

IBB AT HOME 71

SECONDARY BEDROOM Black, white, and sky blue were chosen for this boy’s room palette. Modern monogrammed king shams and sky-blue euro shames were layered with a white duvet and a cozy black blanket. Gray Malin prints add a playfulness to the bedroom. The center pillow on the bed as well as the pillow in the swivel chair were made from a fabric we designed using their son’s initials to create a geometric pattern.

SECONDARY BEDROOM A cheerful palette of orange, hot pink, aqua, and navy set the tone for this girl’s bedroom. Navy paint was used on the bed wall, and a light aqua was used on the surrounding three walls. A day bed and two chairs make up the room’s sitting area. We used an acrylic trunk to serve as a cocktail table and storage for her stuffed animals.

80 IBB AT HOME

In developing this home’s personality, our IBB Model Design Team began with the spacious kitchen. As the heart of the open floorplan, it expands the entire length of the family room. The design is a perfect pairing of bold, dark, oversized tile backsplash with elegant cabinets in bright white and soft natural wood tones. The combination of modern lines and natural textures is the core of the style that flows throughout the home.

IBB AT HOME 81

This floorplan’s many unique qualities include a formal dining room. It is set just off the sweeping entryway and flows into the open family room and kitchen. The warm blonde wood floor is carried up the back wall to set the room apart. Hints of gold in the accessories and wood console lift this room to a beautiful level of elegance.

82 IBB AT HOME

IBB AT HOME 83

84 IBB AT HOME

The large family room speaks to how neutrals can be used to create rich contrast and depth of design. We fell in love with this show stopping cocktail table made of natural cut wood surrounded with caramel leathers and light linens, and we set it against a backdrop of a dark accent wall. The dark wall carries the theme of the dark backsplash and really makes the whites pop!

IBB AT HOME 85

The primary bedroom also boasts cozy natural textures, white linens, and dark accents. We created a feature wall of vertical trim painted in Iron Ore by Sherwin-Williams and balanced it on either side with a modern barn door and shutters in the open bay window painted in the same color. By adding the dark accents, the sheer white draperies, bed linens, and white sofa seem even softer and lighter. The vision for the primary bath was to take the ma jesty of a grand ballroom and put it into the bathroom’s finish. The white soaking tub leaps off the black polished marble tile. We added porcelain to the walls so that every inch of the space breathes elegance. Gold is splashed into the room in the hardware and sconces.

86 IBB AT HOME

Whether filled with laughing kids, extended family, or friends from afar, the three secondary bedrooms are large enough for all. We styled two of them as luxe guest rooms. The final bedroom, featuring Audrey Hepburn’s classic features and effortless style, was designed for a high school girl. The sophisticated palette of black and white was popped with personality in a feature wall of bright coral and brightly-patterned custom drapes and bedding. The front pillow was hand painted by one of IBB’s talented model team members.

IBB AT HOME 87

The floorplan features custom built open shelves and a custom built desk in the study, allowing the room to be extremely versatile. We styled it as a workspace and another place to lounge and relax in the home. Working together with the architect, we developed the vast bar-height counter in the game room, again increasing the livability options in this amazing 274 floorplan. The black shutters sprinkled throughout the home add a modern element and great contrast.

88 IBB AT HOME

The entertainment value continues in the large media room. We created a fun and comfortable room to “sit back and relax in" with dark walls, an oversized fluffy white sofa, and classic movie quotes. PANTRY REFRESH BY LYNDSEY MORGAN, NEAT METHOD FRISCO lyndsey.morgan@neatmethod.com neatmethod.com | @neatmethod on Instagram

The end of summer, kids back in school, and cooler weather (hopefully) on the horizon can only mean one thing: The holidays are rapidly approaching. This time of year brings crisp air, merry vibes, and FOOD! Lots of delicious food! Pro tip: We always recommend a pre-holiday pantry refresh to make room for the

90 IBB AT HOME

influx of seasonal ingredients that will be hitting our shelves. Here are some helpful tips to create extra space so that we can bring on the potatoes, canned pumpkin, and cranberry sauce!

1. Check your expiration dates. We're all guilty of the impulse buy at the grocery store. Sometimes they're a hit, but more often than not, the half-eaten bag ends up shoved to the back of the pantry and the back of our mind. I'm looking at you, chocolate-covered potato chips! Regularly checking all of the expiration dates on food can help clear away any forgotten snacks and make room for seasonal items.

2. Evaluate your categories. Did you create four baking bins in your pantry because that's all there

was to do during 2020? Now that life is going back to normal and there is less time for banana bread, evaluate what categories are taking up the most valuable real estate on your shelves. Re-categorize and prioritize what you're actually using on a daily basis.

3. Keep the layout thoughtful. Make sure that items you're using on the daily are front, center, and easy to reach. This will allow more space for seasonal items to live on the very top shelf until you're ready to whip up those amazing holiday dinners.

4. Update your labels. Always check and update your labels after a refresh. Make sure they reflect what is actually in the bins and baskets so everyone in the family can help keep the pantry NEAT!

BAKED PUMPKIN FRITTER BITES PREP TIME: 25 MIN. | COOK TIME: 20 MIN. | YIELDS 48

INGREDIENTS: FRITTERS

• • • • • • • • •

1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour 1/2 cup granulated sugar 2 teaspoons baking powder 2 teaspoons pumpkin pie spice 1/2 teaspoon salt 6 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted and slightly cooled 1 teaspoon vanilla 1 large egg 1 (15-ounce) can pure pumpkin

GLAZE

• 2 cups powdered sugar • 1/3 cup milk

INSTRUCTIONS:

1. Preheat oven to 350°F. Lightly grease two 24-cup mini muffin pans with non-stick cooking spray and set aside. If you only have one mini muffin pan, you can bake the fritters in batches. 2. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, pumpkin pie spice, and salt. In a separate bowl, whisk together the melted butter, vanilla, and egg. Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and stir until well combined and crumbly. Add the pumpkin and stir until it’s well incorporated into the batter. 3. Scoop a heaping tablespoon of batter into each greased muffin cup. Bake for about 15 minutes or until fritters are set,

but slightly undercooked. Remove from oven and let cool slightly before transferring them to a rimmed baking sheet that’s been lined with parchment paper. 4. Turn oven broiler on high. 5. In a medium bowl, whisk together the powdered sugar and milk until smooth and thin enough to drizzle. 6. One fritter at a time, dip the top into the glaze and set upright back on the baking sheet for the glaze to drizzle down the sides of the fritter. Place fritters in the oven and let broil until they start to crisp and caramelize on top, about 3-5 minutes. Once fritters start to turn brown in spots, remove from oven. Brush remaining glaze over the tops of the fritters. Let glaze set for about 15 minutes before enjoying them.
