Welcome to the spring issue of IBB at Home! It’s been an exciting start to 2018 at IBB Design Fine Furnishings! In January, we were honored with “Best Furniture Store in the Country” for the third time by the ARTS Awards. The ARTS Awards celebrate excellence in the home industry, and I cannot be any prouder of #teamibb for taking home this big win. What a way to kick off the year! Also, our retail store got a ma jor facelift. We can’t wait for you to see it – if you haven’t already. There are new floors, lighting, resource areas, client presentation rooms and so much more. Clients have been raving about the store’s new look. It’s light and bright and really allows the furniture and accessories to shine. In addition to our big win and new look, my daughter and IBB Design Co-Owner Shay Geyer recently launched her product collection of fabric, art, rugs, pillows, lighting, botanicals and more. Stay tuned for more coming from Shay! We are so glad to offer this unique collection to our clients. At IBB Design, we’re always looking for ways to offer lines unlike any other retailer. TREND REPORT

ULTRA VIOLET PANTONE 2018 COLOR OF THE YEAR Pantone claims: “A dramatically provocative and thoughtful purple shade, PANTONE 18-3838 Ultra Violet communicates originality, ingenuity and visionary thinking that point us toward the future. Ultra Violet symbolizes experimentation and non-conformity, spurring individuals to imagine their unique mark on the world and to push boundaries through creative outlets.” A bold and energizing hue, we like Ultra Violet best as an accent. Accessories are a great way to tie the color into your home. If you love purple and want a little more of a commitment, go for it with paint. Keep the brighter versions as an accent, but softer more muted tones like lavender and lilac could make for a soothing bedroom.

Tip: Always sample the paint in your space before diving in and painting the entire room. Just because it looks fabulous in your friend’s home, doesn’t mean it will look equally stunning in yours. There are many factors that can influence how paint looks in a space.

FIVE

ESSENTIAL ITEMS EVERY HOME SHOULD HAVE

1

The way someone decorates their home is very personal – after all, everyone has his or her own preferences. Regardless of whether you prefer traditional or modern design, there are certain items that every household should have. Here are some “go to” items that work for every home. 1. A SPLURGE The first piece of advice is to invest in something you truly love even if it is more expensive that you would normally consider. It should be something central to your design, like a beautiful piece of quality furniture. Select an item you will treasure and will want to keep for years. When objects in your home feel like a compromise, the whole look can be unsatisfying, and you’re unlikely to keep long-term what you have purchased. 2. GREAT LIGHTING Don’t underestimate what an impact beautiful, wellplaced lamps can have in your home. Consider interesting overhead lighting in the form of fixtures that are not part of a matched package. This will add real character to a room. 3. ART Artwork is your opportunity to interject something personal. Go ahead and take a risk! If your home is more traditional, consider using a more contemporary piece of art to give your room an edge. Conversely, if you are more modern,

consider using art that is more traditional. In either case, you can consider photography as art. Black and white photographs of architecture, nature or fashion mix well no matter what your style. 4. SOMETHING BOLD Here is where some of you may have trouble committing. Trust me, if you do it, it may become one of your favorite additions. Blue lacquer may not be for everyone, but every home should have at least one bold element that can’t be found elsewhere. This could be a bright color, a beautiful wallpaper or a mismatched piece of furniture. Include at least one choice that feels like a risk. 5. LUXURY BEDDING Bed linens are often thought of as just utilitarian, but believe me, when you indulge in beautifully-made quality bed linens, you will wish you had discovered them earlier. There are so many incredible choices today. Sheeting options offer endless trims, styles, and colors. Duvet and pillow combinations can set the whole tone of your bedroom. These are just a few of my favorite essential items for every home. I hope you take some of the tips and enjoy feathering your nest. A well-appointed home can have an amazing effect on all who dwell and visit.

IBB AT HOME 13

DESIGNER TIPS

Every home could use a little touch of luxe to take an already beautiful room to the next level. Luxe doesn’t have to mean crystal chandeliers everywhere or all mirrored surfaces; it can be incorporated in small ways. A beautiful hand-carved mirror that stands alone as a piece of art can upscale an entry way. Sumptuous velvet on a headboard can make a bed feel inviting and rich. A gorgeous lamp can bring a soft and glamorous glow to any room. Luxe can be done with color or on a monochromatic scale through texture, such as adding natural stone, rich textiles and interesting wood species. To add an even more dramatic feel, try adding a darker color to your walls. Neutral greys or inviting gem tones add depth to a space. Don’t be afraid to take risks! Invest in a wow-piece, a color, or a print that will be talked about and admired for years to come.

STYLISH & FUNCTIONAL DINING ROOM BY JORY GATTIS DICKINSON, IBB DESIGNER jory@ibbdesign.com | @jorya.gattis on Instagram

This dining room design is geared toward a client who really wants to incorporate fun and edgy elements, but in a way that makes sense in a more suburban setting. In dining spaces, it’s first and foremost important to consider who will be using the space – so that selections aren’t only attractive, but also practical for the application. This polished concrete dining table is a great foundation piece, as it will wear beautifully over time. The small imperfections of the surface with everyday wear and tear will only continue to add to this piece’s charm. Offsetting the softened wood-paneled wall with beautiful iron consoles and dramatic art adds a sense of coziness and interest. The geometric-patterned fabric on the side chairs was not only selected for its look, but also for the practicality, as it is

incredibly easy to spot clean. Incorporating an embroidered pattern also creates interest in the space, allowing the eye to move around the space to the focal points. The captain chairs are wrapped in calf hide, which adds to the overall appeal of the room. The styling was kept fairly clean, and the real pops come in with gold accents that frame the striking art. The crowning jewel of this space is the industrial-ringed chandelier that features 15 staggering Edison bulbs. Between that and the picture lights on the side, the space truly glows and will surely be the setting for fantastic dinner parties that run deep into the night.

DESIGNER TIPS

Infuse Spring is here, which means it is a perfect time to refresh your home’s design!

When you think of spring, you inevitably think of flowers. Updating your floral arrangements is a great way to infuse a new color into a room while effortlessly adding an unexpected element to your design. Whether you set an arrangement on your cocktail table, bedside table or kitchen counter, florals are guaranteed to freshen up your space. Springtime is also a great occasion to update your bed linens. If you are anything like me, you love a beautiful, freshly-made bed. I am constantly looking to incorporate new elements into my bedding, and the change of season is a terrific time to do just that. You can make your bed look and feel spring ready simply by mixing in some lighter fabrics such as linen or cotton and by throwing in some new decorative pillows to your existing bedding. I love to infuse the season into a design by mixing up the pillows, not just on a bed, but in multiple rooms in a house. This is a great way to introduce a new color scheme without feeling like you must completely start from scratch. When working with a neutral space, you can add pillows with an interesting texture or fun pattern. Spring is an ideal opportunity to step outside of your comfort zone and infuse new elements into your design.

GUEST ROOM BY MEGHAN SEBREN IBB VISUAL MERCHANDISER meghan@ibbdesign.com @meghansebren on Instagram

When considering your guest room, always ask yourself: “Would I want to stay here?” It’s the simple luxuries that create an enjoyable experience. To amp up your guests’ visits, add these little touches that will go a long way in making your visitors feel at home. GOOD LINENS Good linens are a top priority. This splurge will definitely get noticed and be appreciated.

MIRROR Give your guests a space to get ready in the privacy of the room.

PILLOWS Everyone has different preferences, so load the room with different kinds (soft and firm pillows) and add extra blankets or throws.

CHAIR A comfy chair and an assortment of books and magazines will invite relaxation.

FOR THE NIGHTSTAND

DESIGN TIP Make it personal by adding a frame with a picture of you and your guest.

A decorative bowl or tray is handy to hold earrings and watches. Good bedside lighting allows convenient nighttime reading. Flowers and a candle always enhance the ambiance. Be sure to select a scent that isn’t overpowering, in case it’s not your guest’s preference.

DESIGNER TIPS

MULTIFUNCTIONAL PIECES TO MAKE YOUR SPACE

MORE LIVEABLE Do you have a room or nook in your home that is a design challenge because of the size or layout? Today, there are so many wonderful multifunctional pieces that will solve your problems and add to the design of your home. Check out a few of my favorite space-saving pieces:

BENCHES Armed benches are a perfect option for additional seating in narrow areas. A backless bench with short arms on either side is great to fit snuggly against a wall or the foot of your bed.

NIGHTSTANDS Nightstands with both open and closed storage are ideal. They provide a place for a lamp and accessories and a spot to store away your current book and more.

OTTOMANS Storage ottomans make a great choice for your living space. You can discreetly stow your throws, magazines and other odds and ends.

CHESTS A closed piece can add storage and sophistication to your design. This chest features a sleek cubby with a multi-plug electrical outlet designed for charging electronic devices. The unit includes multiple storage drawers and trays behind each door, as well as necklace or tie hooks and a smart mail catch-all.

SLEEPER SOFA Sleeper sofas have come a long way! They are stylish and comfortable and perfect to add for extra guests in a study or living space.

“Arrows” was one of the first patterns that I developed for my new fabric collection. I wanted it to have a painterly effect where the brushstrokes were evident. We’re offering it in 10 colors from neutrals to more vibrant hues. It’s a versatile pattern that could work in a range of aesthetics and rooms depending on the color you choose.

BY SHAY GEYER OWNER & DESIGNER shay@ibbdesign.com @designershay on Instagram

Here we’ve used it in the graystone color way and paired it with camel and blush pink as an accent. This scheme lends itself to a vintage vibe and makes for a soft sweet nursery. The ruffled edge around the pillows offers a frilly girly feel. The pattern’s scale works out for many uses – drapery panels, pillows and even the crib’s bed skirt. Cut-yardage, drapery and pillows from the Shay Geyer Collection are available to purchase at IBB Design Fine Furnishings. Ask one of our designers for a quote for custom drapery and bedding made from these fabrics.

DESIGN TRENDS

SOPHISTICATED SOFT TONES Grays have had a great run and will not disappear in 2018, but soft, warm tones will be front and center! Bring in warm neutrals with gold and soft taupe for an easy living feel. Perhaps mix in a little blush. The tones were once synonymous with boring but now are being presented in a more contemporary way.

KAY LEWIS IBB DESIGNER kay@ibbdesign.com

FABULOUS FLORALS Today’s florals aren’t like your grandmother’s prints. They are modern, bold and graphic. Pick a floral print you love and use it on chairs or ottomans in a room with more neutral furniture to add color. Floral wallpaper on one focal wall in a room can add lots of color and pattern without overwhelming the room.

PAM HOOD IBB DESIGNER pam@ibbdesign.com

BEAUTIFUL BULLION FRINGE Incorporating this once traditional element into fresh and unexpected applications, fringe can be adapted in a more updated setting to complement a free-flowing look. Fringe can feel daring, but this small decorative touch can yield instant rewards. Don’t be afraid to try this look on pillows, drapery treatments and other soft goods in your space!

KARI WOODS IBB DESIGNER kari@ibbdesign.com @kari826625 on Instagram

TERRIFIC TILE While wallpaper is still strong this year, another contender is stealing the show! Patterned tile used as accents, as a statement on flooring or even an entire wall or room is an absolute stunner!

IBB Designer Shannon Gidney worked with the Bristol family to design their dream home from the ground up in Prosper, Texas. She, along with Mendy Bristol, carefully hand selected each material for the new construction project. Extensive planning went into laying out and designing all of the furnishings, drapery and accessories for the home, as well. “We wanted our new house to feel like our ‘home’! We lived in our prior home for 15 years and we have three adult kids who are all out of the house now. They were terribly upset when we sold their childhood home, so we wanted them to instantly feel like this new home was theirs as well.” – Mendy

IBB AT HOME 27

Formal

DINING ROOM The Bristols entertain a lot and in fact, even hosted a large bridal shower at their home just two weeks after moving in. The furnishings reflect a traditional, timeless feel, while the color palette is soft and sophisticated. Subtle blues accent the space through fabrics and accessories. The large dining table accommodates guests comfortably, and the atmosphere invites them to sit and stay a while.Â

IBB AT HOME 29

Formal

LIVING ROOM Mendy says, “My favorite room is the formal living room. The soft blues, grays and wood tones throughout the space always make me feel warm whenever I walk through the room. It is by far the prettiest room in the house. It’s what all of our guests first see when they walk in through the foyer, so I’m very proud of that room and the way it turned out.” Shannon also claims the room as her favorite design. “It exudes a soothing and inviting feel. I love the quaintness of it even with its two-story ceilings. It really tugs on your heartstrings to nestle up and read a book by the fireplace.”

IBB AT HOME 31

Study The two-story study is enveloped in rich wood paneling and carries a cozy aesthetic. It’s a stately room with layers of textures including quilted leathers and cut velvets. A cast stone fireplace creates a focal point centered in the room. A beautiful hand-knotted rug brings in color and grounds the space. Medals, honors and precious memorabilia adorn the walls.

IBB AT HOME 33

Master BEDROOM

The design for the master bedroom is soothing and serene and rich in traditional design elements. The Bristols love a classic look, and their bedroom epitomizes that. A beautiful wood bed and nightstands are contrasted with a soft blue-green color palette showcased in luxe textiles. The sitting area offers a quaint spot for relaxing. A pair of matching tufted settees flanks a custom cast stone fireplace. A small drink table in natural aqua stone and silver leaf acts as jewelry in the space.Â

IBB AT HOME 35

Daughter’s BEDROOM

The Bristols’ daughter Makenzie requested a pretty palette featuring shades of purple for her room. The kids’ rooms upstairs are all set up like master suites. Large rooms with king beds and plenty of space were a high priority. They wanted the home to be comfortable and roomy enough for all of their kids to one day bring their spouses and future grandkids.

IBB AT HOME 37

Outdoor LIVING

The design of the large veranda on the back of the home rivals any luxury resort. Strong pops of cobalt blue and turquoise bring life to the outdoor space. The sitting area and dining table offer plenty of seating for guests during parties and entertaining. Woven sofas and chairs add texture and incorporate contrast against the travertine and Austin stone.

“Shannon created a classically beautiful and traditional design that made our new home feel warm and inviting. We wanted guests to feel welcome and at home right from the moment they walked inside. Shannon achieved everything we were looking for and also gave us so many ideas to use that we didn’t even think to incorporate. We absolutely love our home.” – Mendy

OPEN FLOOR PLAN

HIGHLAND HOMES MODEL HOME I WALSH SUBDIVISION I ALEDO, TX

DESIGNED BY IBB DESIGN FINE FURNISHINGS LEAD DESIGNERS: BETH RAFFERTY & SUSAN NEFF White painted brick, a tile roof and lush landscaping offer stunning curb appeal as you drive up to this new Highland Homes Model home in Aledo, TX. Cedar garage doors and a transitional style iron front door add contrast to the home’s exterior.

IBB AT HOME 41

FAMILY ROOM

This home features a spacious open floor plan. The interior design is layered with cozy textures in a palette of taupe, white and gray. For the furniture layout, we floated a three-cushion sofa upholstered in a white Crypton fabric. A taupe patterned rug grounds the

sitting area. Additional seating was brought in with a pair of wood-framed chairs, as well as a wing chair covered in a rich brown velvet. A vintage-inspired weathered wood mirror hangs above the fireplace and highlights the room’s soaring ceilings.

IBB AT HOME 43

KITCHEN We created contrast with the dark wood floors by painting all of the kitchen cabinetry in a crisp white. The waterfall island was designed using quartz countertops with beautiful taupe veining running through it and is complemented by the taupe subway tile used on the backsplash. Metal and wood counter stools offer a nod to the vintage vibe. White Klismos chairs were paired with a concrete and wood round dining table in the breakfast nook. Taupe linen sheers dress the windows, while plantation shutters offer privacy.

IBB AT HOME 45

LIBRARY A pair of wing chairs and a tufted leather ottoman provide a cozy spot to read a book or kick back and watch a little TV. Built-in bookshelves were painted

crisp white and offer ample storage and function for the space. Warm taupe walls envelop the remaining walls and give contrast to the airy white linen sheers.

DINING ROOM A casual and inviting design was the goal for the dining room. A wood and iron dining table was used with a mix of wood side chairs and parsons chairs at the heads of the table. A reclaimed-wood buffet sits

beneath a trio of iron antiqued mirrors. An oversized abstract piece of art fills the wall opposite the buffet and introduces green as an accent color.

IBB AT HOME 47

MASTER BEDROOM A modern, no fuss look was created with a streamlined upholstered bed and balanced symmetry by using matching nightstands and lamps. Lush green velvet drapes the windows and is also incorporated as an accent on the bedding. The master bathroom features a beautiful linear mosaic tile in taupe that surrounds the bathtub and shower wall. A hint of green is brought in with an upholstered ottoman used as a vanity chair.

IBB AT HOME 49

GIRL’S ROOM Shades of green were combined with white to design this sweet girl’s room. Color-blocking draperies dress the windows and highlight the palette. A reclaimed wood console and nightstand provide storage in the room. The bed skirt, shams and decorative pillows usher in pattern through a fern motif.

BOY’S ROOM The walls were painted taupe with white stripes and hash marks to create a football theme. Plaid and striped patterns offer a preppy-chic and masculine for the room. Vintage-inspired metal and wood nightstands and bookcases offer storage for the room.

IBB AT HOME 51

PLAYROOM We loaded up on fun colors to create a gender neutral playroom. Floating bookshelves with cube ottomans underneath help to define a little reading area. A small writing desk offers a spot for homework while a larger table and chairs offer the perfect workspace for crafts and games. An area rug gives a pop of pattern and color as well as a soft spot atop the hardwood floors.

IBB AT HOME 53

NURSERY We created a soothing nursery fit for a princess using soft flowing fabrics and a neutral palette. A crown holds a swag treatment over the crib, and angel wings were used as artwork over the club chair. Sheer drapery panels filter the light and create an airy feeling to dress the windows.

IBB AT HOME 55

GAME ROOM Tons of fun is ready to be had in the open game room and media room areas. A shuffleboard was used in the center of the game room. We used a pair of barstools at the snack bar that divides the two rooms. A pair of comfy sofas and several small ottomans offer seating in the media room.

BUTTER-POACHED LOBSTER CONFIT POTATO BOK CHOY Ingredients Serves 4 For the lobsters: •

4 whole 1 lb. lobsters, live

Boiling salted water

Ice bath, standing by

1 lb. whole unsalted butter

1 lemon, with peel

1/2 of one vanilla bean

2 sprigs fresh thyme

2 whole bay leaves, fresh if possible

1 cup dry white wine, such as Sauvignon Blanc

For the confit potato: •

2 large Idaho baking potatoes

2 cups rendered duck fat

Salt & pepper to taste

For the bok choy: •

2 heads baby bok choy

Boiling salted water

Ice bath, standing by

2 tablespoons whole, unsalted butter

1/2 cup chicken or vegetable stock

1 tablespoon sherry vinegar

Directions Set both pots of water on the stove. For the lobsters, you will need a large pasta or stock pot. For the bok choy, a 2-quart sauce pot will do. Prepare an ice bath to accommodate the lobsters and one to hold the bok choy. When the large pot comes to a boil, plunge the lobsters in whole, making sure they are completely submerged. Boil the lobsters for 5 minutes. In the meantime, cut the bok choy heads in half lengthwise and lower them into the smaller pot. Blanch them for 3 minutes. Place in the small ice bath and set aside. After 5 minutes, remove the lobsters and place them in the larger ice bath; set them aside. Place the duck fat in a shallow pan with steep sides, and set it over medium heat. Cut the Idaho potatoes into 4 large rectangles or "planks" about the size of a credit card or as close to that shape as the potato will allow. Rinse the cut potato planks in water, drain them briefly on a paper towel, and gently place them in the melted duck fat. Allow the fat to come to a gentle simmer; then turn off the heat and leave the potatoes in the fat. This will allow them to cook slowly and keep their shape. Break the lobster tails, claws and knuckle meat out of the shells, and set aside. In a 4-quart saucepan, combine the wine, thyme, bay leaf and vanilla bean. Peel the lemon in a circular fashion and add the peel, along with the juice of the lemon, to the pot and set over medium heat. Cut the butter into 1-inch cubes. As the liquid comes to a simmer, start adding the butter one cube at a time and whisk it into the sauce. Continue until all the butter is added and whisked in smoothly. The butter should be opaque and creamy in texture and appearance. Turn the heat to low, and add the lobster tails. Poach them in the butter sauce for about 5 minutes on very low heat. In the meantime, set two small sauté pans over medium heat. In one, combine the chicken stock, butter and sherry vinegar. When this combines, add the bok choy and turn it over occasionally, allowing it to glaze. In the other, add a little of the duck fat. Season the drained potato planks very well with salt and pepper, and sear them in the duck fat until nicely browned.

PIGALLE COCKTAIL Ingredients • • • • •

1.5 oz. Barr Hill Gin .75 oz. Contratto Bianco Vermouth 1 oz. house-made raspberry syrup 1 egg white .5 oz. simple syrup

Directions Dry shake all ingredients to emulsify. Add ice to shaker tin and shake to chill. Pour over ice in a Collins glass and add club soda to finish.

Just before plating, add the claw and tail meat to the butter sauce. (You could also just serve the tail and reserve the claw and knuckle for another use.) To plate Place the potato on one side of your plate or shallow dish, and place the piece of bok choy on top. Lift the tail out of the pot, and place next to the potato. Take one big spoonful of the butter from the pot, and spoon over the tail.
