TREND REPORT

SIZZLING Pumpkin Spice A warm rich shade of orange, like pumpkin spice, is an invigorating color that can be a fabulous dominant color or an excellent accent. It's a stunning hue in high gloss or lacquer for a wood paneled room or on a piece of furniture. Orange can instantly energize a room and spice it up.

TIP: Always sample the paint in your space before diving in and painting the entire room. Just because it looks fabulous in your friend’s home, doesn’t mean it will look equally as stunning in yours. There are many factors which can influence how paint looks in a space.

Check out a few of our favorite ways to incorporate pumpkin spice into your home. Paints to consider: 1. Benjamin Moore, Pumpkin Pie 2167-20 2. Behr, Fall Foliage M220-7A 3. Farrow & Ball, Charlotte's Locks No. 268 4. Pratt & Lambert, Nasturtium 1830 5. Behr, Roasted Seeds M220-5

window

A window with no window treatment may often feel unfinished. Like a beautiful ensemble, a window is not complete without a little jewelry. Depending on the overall feel of the room there are many ways a window can be finished. To maximize the view, use a roller shade from Hunter Douglas. When fully retracted it does not impede your window and can be paired with stationary drapery for a little softness. For a wow factor in a space, draperies can add color, pattern and even texture to a room. In a master bedroom, a cozy, dark sleeping environment that can let light in during the day is optimal. Silhouettes, which are a soft fabric but open like a blind, paired with elegant drapery would be just the trick. For those that solely want drapery, try a fully-functional drapery that closes over your window with a little power, so you don’t have to abandon your morning coffee to open them by hand. No matter what the desired function, there is a custom option to fit every vision and make your house feel like a home.

JORY GATTIS IBB DESIGNER jory@ibbdesign.com @jorya.gattis on Instagram

- WHAT THE PROS KNOW JORY GATTIS SHARES HIS TRICKS OF THE TRADE

EASIEST UPDATE

Over time, people naturally accumulate things in a space, but typically aren’t as quick to purge. Look over each area in your home with a very discerning eye and see what pieces you love and what could be replaced or even eliminated altogether.

BIG IMPACT/LOW COST UPDATE

Paint. Nothing updates a space like a fresh coat of paint!

FAVORITE PIECE IN YOUR HOME

It goes completely against my typical aesthetic, but I have this beautiful oversized églomisé console that spoke to my soul the minute I saw it! While the rest of my home is more of a streamlined soft-contemporary vibe, the juxtaposition of this piece makes it read like a piece of art sitting in my master bedroom. It’s the first thing I see every morning when I wake up.

SPLURGE WORTHY PIECE

Invest in a great neutral, staple upholstery. While the show-stopping art, accessories and textiles in a space are what make a space sing, your staples are what you actually live on. They not only have to look great, but serve a functional purpose. If you skimp on the core pieces, you’ll be replacing them before you know.

MOST INSPRING SPACE YOU’VE SEEN

I’ve visited Frank Lloyd Wright’s home and studio outside of Chicago. That tour and much of his other work has greatly influenced my personal aesthetic and design sensibilities. In a very warm and approachable way, Wright was really big on simplicity, symmetry and fearless scale. These are all things that speak directly to my heart and I incorporate into design projects, be it in floor plans or interesting accent pieces.

DESIGN RULE

Don’t live your life trying to keep up with trends. Your home is your sanctuary and should be filled with beautiful things that you love and make your heart happy.

FAVORITE BOOK

I actually have an obsession with fashion books. My personal collection consists of Louis Vuitton, Fendi and Ralph Lauren books among many others.

UNDERSTANDING

RUGS

In today’s disposable society, a hand-knotted rug is something to be kept and treasured. A good-quality rug is meant to be used, enjoyed and passed down. The term Oriental rug refers to any hand-knotted rug created in the ancient rug weaving centers of the Near and Far East. Most hand-knotted rugs produced today come from three countries – Pakistan, China and India. Based on my experience with quality, I would list them in that order with Pakistan being considered the finest. Hand-woven rugs date back nearly 3,000 years, but the idea of using them under foot is relatively new. That custom is thought to have originated in Europe around 300 years ago. Most design motifs can be traced back to the districts or regions from which they are woven. There are several factors that contribute to the cost of a rug, such as where it is made, the wool or silk it is woven from, and whether the yarns are colored using vegetable dyes or synthetics. Another contributing factor is the rug’s knot count. This is the number of vertical knots multiplied by the number of horizontal knots in a square inch. The higher the knot count, the finer the rug. This can be a little confusing considering one area’s finest count may be 300 knots while another may be 800 knots. Choose a rug that you love for its durability as well as its decorative beauty. The purchase of a hand-knotted rug is one that should last for decades and be enjoyed for generations to come.

reel

As the temperature begins to fall and the leaves change, we begin to anticipate cooler weather. What better time to focus on getting your media room geared up for football watching parties or even a cozy spot to cuddle up, watch a movie or read a book? Media rooms are taking on a new face, as recliners in rows no longer define the typical media room. Clients are calling for more than a dark room with dark paint and carpet. You can spice them up with wallpaper on the walls, or even the ceiling. Or perhaps play with fabrics or a wainscoting in a contrasting color from the wall paint. Be sure to stay away from anything with too much metallic which might produce a glare.

IBB DESIGNER shannon@ibbdesign.com @shannongidneyibb on Instagram

Get creative, or do something unexpected and fun with the carpet. Sectionals or sofas paired with chaise lounges are a huge hit with cantilevered tables tucked in and around to hold beverages and snacks. Lush full-sized blankets folded nicely on each seat create a comfortable, inviting and relaxed atmosphere. Also, tucking a sofa table in behind the sofa or sectional with counter stools pulled under adds extra seating for those who may not be entrenched in the watch party, but want to join in the fun. All in all, make it a room that encapsulates you, a room that invites you to entertain or relax.

STYLE

Designing a stunning entryway can be a daunting task. The entry is the first space people see, and that initial impression can and should set the tone for the entire house. Consider your home’s architectural details when designing and decorating the space. Does the foyer open to a sea of windows? Keep the line of sight open to see through the space. Select a low bench with an impactful rug. Is there a large curved staircase and/or arched openings? Opt for classic and simple, like an oversized entry table with a dramatic floral arrangement. Do you have a modern home with an open railing or floating staircase? Choose a small set of ottomans and dramatic art piece to make a visual impact. Adding a show-stopping

chandelier will never cease to amaze. Lighting can be the focal point in itself. Whether it's traditional, contemporary or a transitional blend, get creative and make a statement. What does your dream entryway look like?

ESSENTIAL BEDDING Euro Shams

Euro shams add another dimension to your bed. Be sure to get down-filled shams so they provide a comfy support when reading or watching TV. Super Euro shams are another option; use two large ones instead of three.

Coverlet

In Texas, a duvet can sometimes be too heavy. A coverlet is a great alternative and also an easy way to change up your bedding. Try folding your coverlet to lay across your duvet at the foot of the bed during the colder months.

Sheets

Don’t skimp on the sheets. There are three factors to consider when making your sheet selection: the fiber, how it’s woven and the thread count. You should always have three sets, so you can rotate regularly. This will increase the life of the sheets tremendously.

Accent Pillows

Pillows are great for an added pop of color, but even the smallest hint of red on this bed takes it to another level. Swap out the lamps, pillows and ottomans for an instant update.

Bed Don’t be afraid of a fabric headboard;

there are so many durable options available. An upholstered bed softens a room and provides a luxurious backdrop for any bedding style.

DESIGN trends BACK IN BRASS

Whether on its own or mixing with other metals, brass is back in a big way. It’s not the overpowering brass of the 1980s, instead it can add a brilliant sophistication to your dÊcor.

GOING GEO

Geometric bold prints have a strong presence in the furniture and fashion industries. They include polyhedrons, hexagons, zigzags and circles. Using these bold patterns in your interiors creates energy and brings life to a room. A little bit of these attentiongetting designs can make a big impact!

LIGHT AS ART

Lighting is a powerful tool in interior design. Fixtures can be used to illuminate a room, transform the mood, or simply serve as a decorative piece of art. As objets d’art, a chandelier and/or lamp can completely define a space.

STUD STYLE

Nailhead trim is a fabulous way to add excitement and definition to any piece of furniture. Dating back to the 16th century, this design detail continues to appeal and appease. It is used on both upholstery and case good pieces as a perfect embellishment with a timeless look.

SUSAN MEDLIN IBB DESIGNER smedlin@ibbdesign.com @sue4ibb on Instagram

BOLD AND RICH

Bold, saturated hues, often referred to as jewel tones are back in home dĂŠcor. When used in the right proportions, these colors add a richness and sense of style to an interior. Accenting these vibrant colors with black, white or gold make a great finishing touch.

OPEN HOUSE This summer, IBB Design Fine Furnishings hosted our annual Meet the Designers Open House and welcomed more than 300 guests! It was a day full of design inspiration. Take an inside look into our team’s vignette designs and the inspiration for their spaces. Follow us on social media for information on next year’s Meet the

Michael Reese MICHAEL@IBBDESIGN.COM

DESIGN INSPIRATION: My space allowed for three cohesive vignettes - a sitting room, dining room and master bedroom. The bedroom was inspired by an amazing floral wallpaper and a beautiful, custom-made poster bed. I’ve labeled the style and design as European Palm Beach, or Atlantic meets the Mediterranean. DESIGN INSPIRATION: I grew up watching the TV series Frasier, and was always obsessed with the design of

condo.

With

exception of the infamous duct-taped recliner, the design of his living space is barely dated, some 20 years later, because it was filled with beautiful classic pieces. My vignette was inspired by that same timeless aesthetic with a handful of beautiful pieces in a space which allows them to shine.

DESIGN INSPIRATION: The design mantra I live by is - people don’t remember pretty design, but they remember interesting design. Therefore, I focus on spaces which bring together the old and the new, or the classic and the funky, to make spaces interesting. My inspiration for this vignette comes from a deep seeded love of classic lines and fresh color.

DESIGN INSPIRATION: I love to entertain at home, and find nothing better than good friends, food and wine. Consequently, I was inspired to design a dream dining room. This space incorporates unique seating options and is styled specifically for hosting dinner parties. Since teal is my favorite go-to color and works with just about anything, I had to include it in my design.

When paired with a white backdrop, the vignette’s design feels fresh and festive. A deep blue traditional chest with a Carrera marble top anchors the space with sophistication.

DESIGN INSPIRATION: The vibrant multi-colored prints and velvet fabrics I found during a recent trip to High Point Furniture Market served as inpiration for my sitting room vignette. These bright textiles make a space so inviting, while the velvets add texture. I accessorized the space with crystals and shagreen-embossed leather on the game table for dramatic interest.

DESIGN INSPIRATION: After falling in love with a Zebra print bar cabinet, I knew it would be the primary inspiration for my chic space. To achieve a classic, yet sophisticated sitting area, the vignette’s design untilizes a monochromatic palette of black, white and shades of grey.

CHIC FARMHOUSE HIGHLAND HOMES MODEL HOME BRIDGELAND SUBDIVISION CYPRESS, TX DESIGNED BY IBB DESIGN FINE FURNISHINGS LEAD DESIGNERS: BETH RAFFERTY & SUSAN NEFF

WE'RE EXCITED TO SHARE ONE OF OUR MOST RECENT INSTALLATIONS FOR HIGHLAND HOMES. THIS GORGEOUS MODEL HOME FEATURES A NEUTRAL PALETTE OF GRAY AND WHITE WITH LAYERS OF FABULOUS TEXTURES TO CREATE DEPTH IN THE DESIGN.

ENTRY/DINING Distressed wide plank engineered wood floors and a vintage-inspired, reclaimed-wood cabinet immediately set the tone for this farmhouse-style aesthetic. Accessories were thoughtfully placed on the entry cabinet to tie into the look. In the dining room, a white-washed distressed dining table and cabinet provide texture and contrast to the light gray walls. Three iron mirrors anchor the other side of the room and visually extend the space. Charcoal linen chairs surround to provide seating for eight. White linen fabric with an arabesque pattern was chosen for drapery to dress the windows.

IBB AT HOME 41

KITCHEN White painted cabinetry and gray quartz countertops complement a classic white subway tile backsplash. Bistro-style chairs were used around the iron base breakfast table to bring in a range of textures into the space. An old barn painting is the perfect finishing touch for the nook.

STUDY Shiplap was used in the white painted bookshelves as an element to support a farmhouse look. Crisp white linen drapery panels create a fresh and airy feel, while a cognac tufted leather club chair adds warmth and a nice spot to curl up with a book. A Cerused wood writing desk offers workspace without feeling heavy or overbearing in the space.

IBB AT HOME 43

FAMILY ROOM The patterned tile fireplace makes a dramatic and chic statement in the family room. A large arched windowpane mirror was used above the mantle to accentuate the ceiling and architectural details. Subtle design details like the leather straps on the pair of chairs coordinate with the leather modern chesterfield sofa and leave a lasting impression.

IBB AT HOME 45

MASTER Patterned broadloom carpet creates powerful visual interest and texture in the master. An upholstered and iron canopy bed with crisp white bedding provides a low maintenance look which does not compete with the carpet. Beautiful linen drapery panels in a tone-on-tone traditional print dress the windows. The sliding barn door to the master bathroom is a perfect design element to support the farmhouse design style.

BATH

The master bathroom also features a soothing neutral palette. A largescale, white-washed distressed mirror serves as a dressing mirror and anchors the large wall. A tufted cube ottoman in charcoal gray velvet is used for vanity seating.

IBB AT HOME 47

GAMEROOM This game room area is the ultimate hangout spot. One side of the room features a shuffleboard table, a desk, and metal and leather barstools by the bar area. Plaid panels dress the windows and offer a masculine feel to the space. Vintage arrow signs were mixed in with art to create a gallery on the wall. The other side of the room is setup for watching movies or sports.Â

IBB AT HOME 49

NURSERY Stripes going up the walls and ceiling create a playful tone in this nursery. White sheer drapery panels with gray and white bedding provide an airy dreamlike feel for the room.

BOY’S Vintage cars and racing stripes decorate the boy’s room. The distressed-wood furnishings, metal trunks and leather sling chair are all characteristics of the farmhouse look.

bay leaf, tomato paste, chile puree, jalapeno, and toasted spice mixture to the stockpot.

Directions Continued In a Dutch oven or heavy skillet, add just enough oil to cover the quartered tortillas (do not add the tortillas to the pot at this point), and heat the oil to 350 degrees (F). When the oil is hot, fry the quartered tortillas for 2 to 4 minutes, or until crisp. Drain the fried quarters on paper towels, add them to the stockpot, and bring the mixture to a boil. Lower the heat and simmer for 1 hour, skimming off the fat as necessary. In the last 10 minutes of cooking, add the epazote leaves or fresh oregano. Process the soup in a food mill, or use a blender to obtain a smooth consistency, and return the soup to the stockpot to keep warm. If the soup becomes too thick, add additional chicken stock to thin it out. Season the soup with salt, lemon juice, and cayenne to taste. Just before serving, prepare the garnish. In a separate stockpot, poach the chicken breast in the chicken stock over low heat for 15 minutes, then cut into 1/2-inch cubes. In a Dutch oven or heavy skillet, heat 4 cups vegetable oil to 350 degrees (F). Fry the tortilla strips for 2 minutes, or until golden brown. Drain the strips on paper towels and season with salt. To serve, warm the chicken and avocado cubes up slowly in a little bit of the tortilla soup, then divide evenly among four soup bowls. Pour the hot tortilla soup over each bowl and top with the cheddar cheese and fried tortilla strips, or serve on the side. Note: Epazote is a pungent Mexican herb available in Mexican specialty stores. If epazote isn’t available, you can substitute fresh Mexican oregano.
