WELCOME TO

IBB AT HOME BY SHAY GEYER shay@ibbdesign.com

It’s time for summer fun! The kiddos are out of school and everyone is filled with excitement for their summer vacation plans. You may also be spending more time at home than usual over the summer which can lead to contemplating home makeovers and preparing your design wish list. That’s where we can help! Our summer issue is full of sizzling design and our designers are sharing their expertise to get you inspired. The cover story takes you on a tour of a classic all-American design by Shannon Gidney. If you’re in to spending summers at the lake, then you’ll love the feature from Kevin Twitty about a lake house project he recently completed. Cobalt is all the rage right now and we’re showing you some fabulous ways to incorporate it into your home. Kay Lewis is discussing the ever popular topic of merging his and hers design styles. James “JT” Turner schools us in the latest in outdoor fabrics and Susan Medlin showcases some of her favorite wallpapers. My daughter Jaylie interviewed my long time friend Kim Lewis-Gleason about the nursery design for her sweet baby girl. It’s one of my all time favorites! Starting in this summer issue, we’ll be featuring one of our latest model home projects with Highland Homes. We’ve partnered with them for over 30 years and are excited to highlight a recent installation for them in Windsong Ranch. We’ve also got you covered with everything you need for a swanky summer soirée. Asador, one of Dallas’s hottest new restaurants, is sharing a refreshing cucumber melon cocktail and a delicious scallop recipe. Our friends at Sweet Pea Events are giving tips on hosting the perfect backyard party. I’m proud to be a member of Dwell with Dignity’s advisory board and in this issue we’re featuring party pics from their recent Thrift Studio fundraiser. We hope to see you at our upcoming events! Wishing you all an awesome & inspiring summer!

TIPS FROM A DESIGNER

TRANSFORM YOUR OUTDOOR SPACE BY JAMES “JT” TURNER The summer is upon us and the warm weather is calling us to enjoy the outdoors. With that brings the need for our exterior living spaces to be comfortable, stylish and able to withstand the elements (as well as kid and pet-friendly!). Though pool parties, barbeques and al fresco dining bring potential for spills and damage, there are so many advances in outdoor fabrics that even the patio space can be carefree.

IBB Designer james@ibbdesign.com

Mimic the color palate of the room closest to the patio to make the transition seamless. Outdoor fabrics are designed and manufactured with advanced technology for UV protection and resistance to mildew, chlorine, fading and atmospheric chemicals; all the while being very easy to maintain and clean with just soap and water. These advances have opened the door to a whole new mantra for designing outdoor spaces. By no longer having to worry about using a light body cloth on outdoor upholstery, the space can showcase personal style through accents like throw pillows, ottomans, exterior drapery and throws, and be a true extension of your square footage by creating a relaxed and resistant outdoor room.

GO BOLDLY

into summer!

Go boldly into summer and throughout the year with the knowledge that these performance fabrics will do their part to maintain the carefree, fashionable spaces you’ve dreamed of and designed!

BLENDING TASTES

MERGING DESIGN STYLES BY KAY LEWIS

IBB Designer kay@ibbdesign.com

Couples often have very different design tastes. Take a beautiful home with owners who are so excited about transforming it, but he likes antiques, she prefers modern, or he is partial to leather and she wants fabric. As a professional designer, I am the mediator, a neutral negotiator, and counselor who listens and understands. After seeing the space and allowing each person to express their thoughts, I’ll develop and present a design concept that cohesively integrates both styles. Everyone wins! A stunning design transforms their space into a place they can build a future and both be proud to show friends and family.

House: 6 Bedrooms, 4.5 Baths, 5,680 square feet Photography by Dan Piassick

Here are two great examples of merging contrasting styles. Example #1: The updated black leather recliner is softened with a Tibetan lamb’s wool pillow, and an orchid adds a touch of elegance atop the rustic cocktail table. The neutral hand-embellished artwork with gold leaf flakes adds glamour to the space while situated above a vein-cut limestone fireplace with a sleek dark wood mantel. Streamlined chairs, in an Ikat pattern fabric, and a caramel color leather sofa with chocolate brown welt cord add to the transitional style. Example #2: This stunning study perfectly combines both styles with rich wood and light walls, and show stoppers like the writing desk with a beautiful curve and masculine leather top. The transitional look continues with great patterns in the geometric rug and the Greek key and nail head detail on the study chair.

WALLPAPER GUIDE

MAKE A STATEMENT From traditional and classic to bold and graphic – wallpaper is back in a big way!

BY SUSAN MEDLIN IBB Designer smedlin@ibbdesign.com

Inspired by runway collections, travel and architectural elements, and classic geometric patterns, wallpaper is definitely making a statement in interior design. At IBB Design, we think it’s the perfect way to add character to your home.

gold & glam

Some of my favorite papers are metallic, which add light and a touch of glamour. Either of these papers would provide excitement to a formal dining room design.

color & pattern love This beautiful paper is striking and would work well in an entry or powder bath with crisp white accents. It could also be framed to make a colorful piece of artwork in your home.

exotic chic

Wordly wallpapers evoke tribal chic motifs which reflect exotic looks with a modern twist. This paper would be perfect for an accent wall behind a bed in a master bedroom.

Designer Tip: Whether you wallpaper one wall or all four – have fun and select a paper you won’t tire of soon. And, don’t forget the 5th wall! We love painted walls with a wallpapered ceiling.

updated classic

This trellis pattern is one of the most popular and classic papers today. It can be used in so many areas around the home – providing a strong or subtle impression depending on the color selected. It’s a great paper to use on the inside of a bookcase or cabinet for an instant update.

traditional floral A delicate and traditional floral lends itself to complementing so many design options and can be mixed with modern furnishings to create a transitional impression.

modern & geometric These papers make a statement and are perfect to mix with solid or even colorblock drapery to make a big impact within a space.

CELEBRATING

Americana Interior Design by Shannon Gidney Photgraphy by Dan Piassick

At IBB, we often work with clients on their homes from the ground up. This was the case with the Brausa family when IBB Designer Shannon Gidney began their new home journey with them as she helped design the interior specifications for their Sanders Custom Home. They formed an instant friendship and the Brausas decided she was also the perfect fit to plan the furnishings, custom drapery and accessories to give them an entirely fresh look to move into once the home was completed.

IBB AT HOME 15

Orange plaid drapery panels give a fresh look to the windows in the study.

THOUGHTFULLY

selected

The home's overall finish out is a neutral palette with thoughtfully selected materials that provide the perfect backdrop to layer in texture and pops of color. The Brausas told Shannon they wanted a Ralph Lauren and All-American feel for their home's design. They requested natural finishes and wood tones with accents of navy and red. As an active family always on the go, their top priority was a kid and pet-friendly design. Shannon used many Sunbrella fabrics as well as fabrics with a very high durability rating. A patterned natural fiber custom rug grounds the sitting area in the family room. Two sofas surround a weather gray wood cocktail table. Coastal elements were added in through accessories and the airy patterned sheer draperies as a nod to their California roots. A pair of navy hair-on hide ottomans offer pull-up seating for extra guests or a place to rest your feet while sitting on the sofas. Accent chairs covered in a classic navy damask pattern flank the fireplace.

PLAYFUL

Pattern

Elegance

Metallic wallpaper in the media room brings a playful pattern into one of the family's favorite hangout spots. In lieu of media chairs, they chose a sectional with a bar table and barstools behind. A tuftedleather ottoman invites family and guests to kick their feet up and relax. Taupe and charcoal gray are accented with pops of orange for the color palette.

CASUAL

Casual elegance best describes the formal dining room which is one of the first rooms you see as you enter the home. Navy large-scaled patterned wallpaper and white wainscoting surround the room. An embroidered wide trim tape was added to linen drapery panels to frame the windows. Rounded back wood framed chairs with a light linen sit on top of a neutral patterned cowhide rug. Nestled in the corner for easy entertaining is a bar cart featuring the family monogram.

RESTFUL

Retreat

The master bedroom is a calming restful retreat with a soft palette of gray, white and blue gray. A two-tiered silver leafed chandelier adds a touch of elegance to the tall vaulted ceilings with wood beams. The Brausas chose a writing desk to go on one side of the upholstered bed and a nightstand for additional storage on the other side. A cozy sitting area features a chaise lounge and mother of pearl accent table.

LIFESTYLE DESIGN

A FAMILY

lakehouse retreat

I was absolutely thrilled to work with my client on their Lake Texoma getaway. We started with one goal – design a home centered on family and building memories. With that in mind, it was time to design the perfect backdrop of comfort and color.

Throughout the home we infused reclaimed wood pieces, rustic metal accents and a soft color palette. We felt it was important to pay homage to the environmental elements often seen in an established lakehouse.

The master sitting room, with a cozy sofa and updated classic spool chair, became one of my favorite spaces. By painting the wood green, we were able to align with the main living area, but still kept the room unique with a soft lavender accent. In the upstairs bunkroom, we maximized the space by adding storage into the stairs and under the bed. Beadboard paneling was added to the wall and around the bed to give the space character and dimension. Around every corner of this lakeside retreat, there is a sense of comfort. It’s the perfect weekend haven for this wonderful family to experience a little rest and relaxation.

PERFECT BACKYARD PARTY By Meaghan Cody & Kelly Simants / Sweet Pea Events

Summer is here and there’s nothing better than a backyard party with your closest family and friends! Throwing a party can sometimes be overwhelming and intimidating, but with a few key details, even you can throw a party that the guests will be talking about for months.

SPACE Prepare your backyard for the big event. Whether you need to call your gardener to spruce up the shrubs, or purchase some extra patio furniture, this is the first step. Your guests will be spending a good deal of time outside, so you want to make sure it is pleasant and enjoyable. Think about the lighting, where people will sit, and how you will display the food and dĂŠcor.

DRINKS Signature cocktails are always a crowd pleaser. Challenge your inner mixologist to fix up a light summer cocktail and then place it in a fun drink dispenser. Guests can help themselves and you can just refill the dispenser when it’s running low. Also, consider placing a galvanized bucket with beer, water and/or soft drinks close by for other options. We suggest a refreshing grapefruit margarita to quench your guests’ thirst, and it looks lovely too.

DECOR Prior to your party, decide on an overall theme. Fiestas are fun! Or even summer colors will do the trick. Whether you want to do disposable plates, or would like to splurge for a nicer plate set, try to incorporate your theme and colors throughout these items. Linens on the tables add a touch of color and theme. Potted plants or cacti work wonderfully as florals, not to mention you can use them in your backyard after the party! A few other details you could bring in could be a fun banner or flags that go along with the theme, paper straws and great serving pieces for your food and beverages.

ENTERTAINMENT

Potted plants or cacti work wonderfully as florals, not to mention you can use them in your backyard after the party!

FOOD

Music is a must for any event, so consider a portable speaker connected to your iPod, or even a live musician for background music. Your theme can also provide inspiration or dictate entertainment options. For example, a mariachi band would be great for a fiesta-themed party. For a true BBQ, look at sourcing a country artist to come sing some tunes and play a guitar. Backyard games such as cornhole, ladder golf and horse shoes are crowd favorites and can be easily purchased at your local sporting goods store or customized on Etsy. For a fiesta, you can bring in a piñata filled with prizes such as candy, small (plastic) liquor bottles, gift cards or any other favorite items.

Think about things that are easy to eat, and aren’t extremely messy. Most people will stand and eat while catching up with friends, and others will sit down. Foods like tacos, chips, dips, hamburgers or hot dogs, and summer salads are usually a huge hit. Not to mention, anything on the grill is always a win. If you don’t want to mess with cooking, you can always call a local restaurant or caterer to prepare a spread. Don’t forget the sweets! Everyone loves a delicious treat at a social gathering.

HIGHLAND HOMES MODEL HOME DESIGNED BY IBB DESIGN FINE FURNISHINGS

IBB Design has proudly designed model homes for Highland Homes for more than 25 years. We recently installed a gorgeous project for them in Windsong Ranch in Prosper, TX and are excited about the rave reviews it has since received. It even was recently nominated for a McSAM Award, a prestigious industry honor.

PHOTOS TO BE EDITED!

style statements We chose a transitional finish out to meet the modern aspects of the neighborhood and the home's architecture. To create a stylish statement in the entry, we used tile that emulates wood in a herringbone pattern turned on a 45-degree angle. The wood tile continues into the family room and kitchen. One of our favorite parts of the finish out was the waterfall island created from the quartz countertops. Highland offers these scratch and stain resistant countertop options as part of their design program. It's the perfect family-friendly option!

outside the box designs The study features aqua, navy and orange, with artwork used to tie the colors together. We created a stripe on the desk chair by running a 5-inch band of a navy fabric down the center of the aqua fabric. Some of the most impactful designs, such as this, come from thinking outside the box and creating your own look.

The family room is very large and opens directly onto the kitchen. We furnished the space with two sitting areas that would allow for multiple uses for the room. The aqua and navy palette is continued and works fabulously with the gray wood tile and vein-cut limestone fireplace. An acrylic chandelier is the perfect choice for the transitional design. Chevron patterned fabric was selected for the kitchen counter stools for a pop against the quartz countertops.

crisp contrast The master bedroom is the perfect retreat. Fresh white bedding provides crisp contrast against a powder blue upholstered headboard. The chevron patterned drapery defines the large seating area with a sofa and bunching cocktail tables. A gorgeous tile on the shower and tub wall in the bathroom glimmers and adds a touch of luxury to a spa-like space.

playful patterns The kids' rooms are playful and offer geometric patterns that complement the home's transitional style. KIDS CORNER

funbabyB

When my mom’s longtime friend, Kim Gleason, found out she was expecting a baby girl, she knew she wanted to design the perfect nursery that would grow with her past the baby years. A fun, bubbly baby girl who even has her own hashtag deserves a special and personalized design for her room. I had a blast learning more about the details of the design and playing with #funbabyB at our photo shoot.

JAYLIE: What inspired Brynley’s room design?

KIM: I knew I wanted pink and red as the color palette, as I have always loved those two colors together. With red in other areas of our home, it creates a nice flow.

SHAY: We fell in love with a pink and red dot patterned fabric, which we thought would be a jumping off point for the room’s design, but were heartbroken when it was out of stock. Since it was the perfect pattern that featured our color palette and a design that would easily transition from baby to teen, we decided to enlarge the scale and paint the pattern on the wall to make it a focal point behind the crib. We just love how it turned out!

JAYLIE: Kim, what is your favorite part of the room?

KIM: That’s tough - I really love it all! The dot wall, pink shag rug and custom toy bench have been the perfect backdrop for taking cute photos of Brynley to mark her monthly milestones. The shag rug is the perfect cozy play area and I really love the pink capiz shell chandelier. It’s just a super fun space for our sweet baby girl, with so many great personal details too. Her monogram turned out so cute, and I love how it completes the vignette by her chair. It’s great that the circle pattern on the mirror, over her dresser/changing table, mimics the dots on the focal wall. Working with Shay and Brandy on this project was so fun. I appreciate their attention to detail and the care they put into designing the perfect room for Brynley!
