AQUA

Aqua is a color often associated with water and the tropics, so it’s no wonder it is regarded as a soothing and calming hue. Known for pairing well with a multitude of accent colors, this fresh greenish-blue evokes a sense of balance and tranquility. If you’re looking to create a peaceful getaway in your abode, using aqua as part of your palette is a perfect start. Shades of aqua can be a great choice for your home’s interiors. It can also be a beautiful choice to paint furniture.

EMBRACE THE BOLD WITH

colorful sofas Buying a sofa is an investment. Whether looking for the first ma jor piece or ready to upgrade, many buyers will play it safe and select a neutral anchor for their living space. However, our clients are encouraged to be daring by selecting bold color and comfort. When it comes to upholstery, so often buyers are afraid they will tire of a bold color choice. If you select fabrics in colors you love, they will never get old. Some popular vibrant color choices are blues, greens and reds. Blue is timeless and mixes well with other colors, while green brings the freshness of nature and also complements others. Deep merlots are back in a big way and add an overall warmth to your interior space.

LET BOLD COLOR CHOICES ADD VIBRANCY TO YOUR LIVING SPACE FOR YEARS TO COME.

DESIGNER TIPS

When it comes to selecting window coverings for a client’s home, there are several things to keep in mind. First, determine the goal for the window covering, whether it be privacy, sun protection or simply adding beautiful fabric to complement the room. Next, examine how the room is used and what type of product might best accommodate. Asking questions such as “Is there a view?”, “Is this an east or west facing window?”, or “Do you have privacy/glare concerns?” are helpful in making selections. Window coverings which provide privacy are plentiful. Functionality is key here. Duettes and roller shades would be examples of products which provide an unobstructed view when open. Alternatively, there are products which offer diffused light such as a silhouette, shutter or woven wood. Under the category of sun protection,

glare and desired room darkness are the issues to address. Typically, these products come in room darkening “opaque” or light diffusing “semi-opaque”. A true blackout treatment can be tricky due to light seepage, so beware. However, these products often can eliminate drafts, decrease electricity bills, and buffer noise which most home owners would consider to be a bonus. On the more decorative end of the spectrum, draperies come in many textures, colors, shapes and sizes. They can be designed for function, such as privacy, or can stand alone adding simply softness or a decorative element to complete a room. Seeking the help of an interior designer is key in selecting window coverings as there are so many details to take into consideration.

DESIGNER TIPS

Mastering OUTDOOR DESIGN

While many indoor living areas are similar, it seems there are no two patios alike. This can create challenges when furnishing and decorating these outdoor spaces, but like indoor spaces, there are a few design basics to consider. The priority should be defining your needs and establishing your focal point. Is it a fireplace? A pool? A view? Once that is decided, consider how the space will be used. Primarily for relaxing? Entertaining? Dining? A shopping list should fall into place based on your needs. Never before have there been so many product choices for outdoor living. The lines between inside and outside seem blurred with fully upholstered sofas and chairs, iron, teak and wicker. To accessorize, there are a multitude of tables, pillows, rugs, and even outdoor-appropriate art and lamps available for every style. When considering all the options, pay attention to select pieces which complement your interior furnishings which will create a nice flow when entertaining. This project called for more formal or classic approach featuring a blue and white color palette. To keep things interesting, a combination of upholstered seating and exposed iron pieces were selected. A pretty marble top dining table and marble/iron occasional tables maintain the design’s formality. For a bit of whimsy, the canopy chaise lounges were added instead of umbrellas. Outdoor draperies provide an elegant touch and flexible privacy. Most importantly, choose quality pieces to suit your lifestyle. Have fun with the outdoor environment. The investment will be well worth the years of enjoyment which a beautiful outdoor sanctuary can provide.

DESIGNER TIPS

LIGHT

it up!

SELECTING BEDROOM LIGHTING In a bedroom, comfort is top priority and the amount of light has a direct influence on the mood and relaxation. Selecting a lamp for the bedside tables is an important choice. The lamp should provide an ample, soft and restful light when the overhead light is turned off. It also needs to be scaled appropriate for the room and you should consider its position to avoid shining directly into your eyes while lying down. The height of the lamp depends on the size of the bedside table or nightstand; as well as the height of the headboard. The lamp should be proportionate to the nightstand, but not taller than your headboard. While lamps do not have to match, symmetry on either side of the bed provides visual comfort. If you opt for different lamps, they should be about the same height. A few cocktail table books under a short lamp can be used to add height and balance. Ideally, the bottom of the shades are at eye level when sitting up in the bed.

DESIGNER TIPS

A black and white palate can be just as attractive in a modern space bursting with the beauty of simplicity, as in a heavily appointed space filled with French antiques.

INTERIOR DESIGN IN

BLACK & WHITE There never has been, nor will there ever be, a more classic color combination than black and white. Whether you’re in the world of home furnishings, fashion or even automobiles – nothing is as classic, timeless or striking. What is it that makes this color combination such a powerful staple? It’s versatility and universal appeal. Whether you are building a space to be filled with color or a space to be completely monochromatic, black and white creates a beautiful base. For a design focused on lines and

pieces, or the movement of textiles and amazing art, these two bold tones will allow the details to sing and the space will feel extremely polished, clean and welcoming. On the other hand, if a space is filled with color on the walls, furniture, fabric, art and so forth, then nothing is allowed to be the spotlight. Unique pieces should be a focus, rather than lost, if they’re overwhelmed by everything else going on in the space. Too much competition in the design space often produces a harsh and overwhelming feeling.

INTERIOR DESIGN BY MICHAEL REESE

TRADITIONAL

If you love antiques and European influence, then you definitely fit into the traditional category. Inspired by 18th and 19th century European decor, traditional design is deeply rooted in history and offers a more formal look in interiors. Intricate millwork in architecture and ornate details on furnishings are symbolic with traditional design elements. Color palettes feature rich and darker hues with jewel tones being a popular choice. Damasks, plaids, florals and paisleys are patterns that are prevalent in traditional design. Wingback, Queen Anne and Chippendale styles are common silhouettes for chairs. Decorative throw pillows with embellishments such as tassels or fringe are details often used. Drapery may have a heavier presence with valences and cornices, embellishments and trims. Antiques and family heirlooms are seen throughout the home's furnishings. Chandeliers and light fixtures are usually more formal and often made of iron or brass and have crystals on them. They also tend to be more curved or scrolled in form. More is more with a traditional aesthetic. Layers of patterns and heavy textures help to create a storied look.

INTERIOR DESIGN BY BETH RAFFERTY AND SHAY GEYER

A transitional aesthetic is a blend of traditional and contemporary design styles. Furniture tends to have classic shapes and silhouettes but with less ornamentation. Simple lines define this look. Architectural elements are more simplistic and crown moldings and paneling have more modern details and less intricate carving. High contrast is common in the home's finish out with a transitional look. Richly stained dark wood floors and crisp white walls are a common palette. A neutral finish out allows for color to be infused throughout the upholstery and artwork in the space. Drapery panels are composed with simple pleats and less embellishments. Geometric patterns are a popular choice for transitional design. Large scaled patterns also make a big impact with this look. Abstract artwork is often blended with traditional furnishings for an updated look.

TRADITIONAL

If most of your answers to this style quiz were “A", your design style leans toward Traditional. Your furnishings are comforting and classic. If the Biltmore House in North Carolina were for sale, you could move right in without changing a thing.

TRANSITIONAL

If your answers to this style quiz were a good mix of two or all three letters, your design style is Transitional. You love a fresh tailored look. You like clean lines, but nothing that feels cold and sterile. You want comfy and inviting, but messy slipcovers are out of the question. You like understated elements of style. Carefully selected accessories are also layered and grouped together to showcase your collected style. They are kept to a minimum, similar to contemporary design, to keep from feeling cluttered or over-designed.

CONTEMPORARY If most of your answers to this style quiz were "B", your design style leans toward Contemporary. You prefer a sleek, sophisticated design with clean lines. This approach is often described as elegant simplicity, where accessories are minimal and less is definitely more. I have a combined living and dining room and would like rugs in the space. Would you recommend one large rug or two separate rugs? – Debbie M.

Two separate rugs would work best to define each area. The rugs shouldn’t match or be so busy that they compete with each other. However, they should have a complementary color scheme.

Maxine Burt | maxine@ibbdesign.com

May I put a sideboard or media console in my bedroom instead of a dresser, if I don’t need the storage space? – Lisa H.

Yes, absolutely. I use media consoles and sideboards in bedrooms all the time. They can be used under TVs or as a decorative cabinet to display accessories with a mirror or art above. Be sure to select a piece which complements the other furniture in your room.

Pam Hood | pam@ibbdesign.com

It’s been challenging for me to find a chandelier for my dining and breakfast rooms. I have 8 foot ceilings, so choosing the right proportion and size has been difficult. Any suggestions?

– Karen T.

We love the rustic farmhouse look, but between the wood and the leather already in our home, we are finding the space overwhelmingly brown. Any suggestions? – Jen W.

PAM HOOD

IBB Designer pam@ibbde

To find the appropriate fixture diameter, add the length and width of the room together (in feet). Convert that value to inches. Example. A 12’ x 10’ room would be 12 + 10 = 22 inches for an appropriate fixture diameter. To find an appropriate fixture length, take the room height (in feet) and multiply it by 2.5. Example. 10’ ceiling height x 2.5 = 25 inches for appropriate fixture length. Keep in mind that it's important to see fixtures in person, because true scale and finish of a fixture is hard to portray online.

Shannon Gidney | shannon@ibbdesign.com

Try lighting up the design with a fresh accent color like citron, melon or blue. Consider a sisal rug, which works great with the farmhouse look, but also brings a lighter color texture to anchor the space. Layers of brushed gold accessories will keep the look current.

Susan Medlin | smedlin@ibbdesign.com

Absolutely. Just think of the beautiful vintage two-toned Rolex watches with silver and gold bands. Combining metals is a classic and timeless look, and when done thoughtfully can add great depth to a space. Try to limit the metals to three different finishes or less.

Can you use one metal finish in the kitchen & another in the family room when you have an open floor plan?

– Victoria R.

Jory Gattis | jory@ibbdesign.com

My formal dining room furniture is very traditional. While I don’t want to get rid of it, I would like to transition into a more modern look. Do you have any suggestions? I was considering a new chandelier and rug. – Nancy M.

Great question! A rug with a geometric pattern in your color tones would be a great start for the update. In addition to a new chandelier, I suggest investing in an upholstered host and hostess chair. The remaining dining chairs could also be reupholstered in a coordinating fabric.

Karen Holloway | karen@ibbdesign.com

I’m not a fan of mounting a TV above the fireplace in my great room, mainly because it sits too high. Considering I have a predominantly traditional design style, what are other options for a TV display? – Joan W.

I'm not necessarily a fan of having the TV over the fireplace either, as I'm always thinking aesthetics first. However, I do think it’s okay to have your TV exposed in the room where, in years past, we concealed them in an armoire or cabinet. Because TVs are so much larger now too, hanging them on a wall beside the fireplace if perfectly acceptable. Position a credenza or cabinet below the TV to make it feel grounded in the space. If you truly want to hide the TV when it’s not in use, consider a lift cabinet which can raise and lower the TV via remote control.

Michael Reese | michael@ibbdesign.com

I’ve read the best designed homes have the same color palette throughout the house. I’m planning a new build and would like for each room to be distinctive and not boring tans, browns and blacks. What would you advise?

– Angela P.

It’s a good idea to start with a neutral foundation throughout the house that you won’t grow tired of – navy blue and grays can be a great neutral base. Layer in color with pillows, throws, artwork, accessories or an accent wall to make each room unique. But, don’t be afraid to try something bold in a smaller space such as a powder room or study.

BY JUNIOR BORGES, THE JOULE HOTEL EXECUTIVE CHEF WWW.MIRADOR-DALLAS.COM

CARAMELIZED FENNEL AND ONION

LOBSTER ROLL

INGREDIENTS 1 large onion 1 fennel bulb 2 tsp. kosher salt 2 tbsp. malt vinegar

INGREDIENTS Live lobsters, 1 to 1-1/2 lbs. each Sea salt Pea tendrils, garnish Fennel pollen, garnish Brioche bread

DIRECTIONS Julienne the onion and fennel. In a large sauté pan, ideally on an induction burner, slowly caramelize the onion and fennel. Start at 170 degrees. As the mixture cooks down, it will release the natural sugars causing the vegetables to stick. At this point, lower the temperature to 135 degrees. Once the onion and fennel have achieved a dark brown color, add the salt and malt vinegar and cook for another 2 minutes. Remove and cool on a tray.

LEMON GARLIC AIOLI INGREDIENTS 2 tbsp. roasted garlic 2 lemons, juice and zest 1 cup homemade aioli

DIRECTIONS Heavily salt a large pot of water until its salinity is reminiscent of the ocean. Place the lobster in the water making sure not to overcrowd them and cook for 3 minutes. Move lobster into an ice bath, salted similar to the boiling water. Pull off the arms with the claw attached and leave them in the ice water. Starting at the lobster’s head, use a sharp knife to split the lobster completely in half. Remove the head goodness and keep aside for later. In the salted cold water, rinse the body to get any excess insides out, and store in a hotel pan or cookie sheet lined with towels. Bring the seasoned water back up to a boil and cook the arms/claws for an additional 2 minutes. Return them to a newly clean and seasoned ice bath. Remove the claw meat. Loosely chop lobster body and claw pieces to maintain large chunks.

GARLIC BUTTER

INGREDIENTS 1/2 lb. butter 6 large garlic cloves, sliced thin 1 bunch thyme DIRECTIONS Start all from cold, melt down slowly at 135 degrees for 20 minutes.

Toast the bun on both sides, then warm the lobster chunks in the butter. While the lobster is heating, brush the bun with the lemon garlic aioli and add the caramelized fennel and onion mixture. Place the warmed lobster on top, and garnish with seasoned pea tendrils and fennel pollen.
