What's on your nightstand? GET TO KNOW MARY HELEN PETERS

For the start and close of each day, my nightstand holds the things that bring peace and calm to my busy life. If you know me, you know I love color and it’s apparent here as well. I chose a mirrored nightstand for timeless elegance and glamour in my bedroom. A tall mercury glass gourd lamp to soften the room while adding a romantic glow. Through movies and books, I love to escape into a romantic comedy whenever I can. Consequently, you’ll find anything by authors’ Jill Mansell or Harriett Evans stacked atop of my favorite colorful cocktail table books.

One of my favorite home scents, the LAFCO “Breakfast Room” candle, is a gorgeous aqua blue color and pairs perfectly with splashes of pink throughout the room. An agate sliced coaster, a framed picture of my favorite guy, and jewelry tray are layered in as well. As a final touch, as I always do throughout my home, you’ll find a vase of fresh flowers. I think it’s important to treat yourself, and there is nothing like the smell and look of fresh flower to finish your space and make it feel like home.

DESIGNER TIPS

dare

to be different

While selecting a bold paint color can be daunting, dare to be different and be rewarded with a unique and dramatic space. A stunning, deep shade of black, like Sherwin Williams Caviar (shown in the above design), shouldn’t be reserved for just media rooms. Black paint can be used to offset a dark wall color with contrasting elements. It can quickly create a chic and sexy look. Utilize light and bright staple pieces against the dark background, so the space feels cozy and inviting instead of claustrophobic. Lighting is also key when using a dark wall color. Ambient lighting along with overhead lighting allows more control when illuminating focal points.

Incorporating mirrored pieces also lets light reflect throughout the space. Don’t buy into the myth that dark colors make a room look smaller – it’s simply not the case when done correctly. Dare to break the mold with dark colors to make your home uniquely yours. DESIGNER TIP: Rather than testing a bold color on a small paint chip, try the color on big sheets of cardboard. Prop the cardboard up in the room to contemplate the change.

SHERWIN WILLIAMS CAVIAR 6990

& BRIGHT A R E A RU G S

IF YOU ARE STARTING FRESH WITH A ROOM, A RUG CAN BE YOUR INSPIRATION! Rugs are the foundation for great design and key to defining a space. Without this foundation it’s a sea of furniture without a focal point. It may seem like a safe route to select a neutral, solid rug – but be bold and integrate color and pattern into your mix. If you are starting fresh with a room, be sure to begin with the largest piece of furniture – a rug! That way you can plan your

design to complement. If you already have your furniture and accessories, then select a rug that works with your existing pieces. Take in account the tones of your walls, floors and other finishes when shopping. But, don’t play it safe! Step outside the box and take your room to the next level with a rug that adds vivid color and pattern to your design.

DESIGNER TIPS

REFLECT

your style

Often times when decorating or updating a home, bathrooms are left out. Many place a few vanity accessories and luxurious towels in the bathroom, but don’t think to replace the mirror glued to the wall. That’s actually the first investment you should make in the bathroom, because it changes everything. The impact of a beautiful decorative mirror alters the way the entire space looks. Since bathrooms typically do not have much furniture, every design detail counts.

Designer Tip: A frameless mirror provides a subtle look, while using a framed mirror will make more of an impact. My favorite tip for choosing a bathroom mirror is to consider an unconventional shape. It will immediately draw your eye and eliminate the need for a lot of accessories. Another great way to change up a double vanity is to hang separate smaller mirrors over each basin, instead of one large rectangular mirror. This approach allows the mirrors to hang vertically, giving height to the wall and the illusion of a larger space.

DESIGNER TIPS BY JAMES “JT” TURNER IBB Designer james@ibbdesign.com @jrt1175 on Instagram

WHAT THE PROS KNOW:

TRADE SECRETS IBB DESIGNER JAMES TURNER SHARES HIS TRICKS OF THE TRADE BEST SOURCE OF INSPIRATION: You never know where inspiration may strike. At a tube station in London, a sunset in West Texas, or even an amazing piece of stone can be the catalyst for an entire design.

BIGGEST PET PEEVE: Never buy anything that comes in a set, like a bedroom or living room set. A home should be a reflection of your personality and interests, which doesn’t come from a cookie cutter design.

SPLURGE-WORTHY PIECE: I have a fondness for antique Persians rugs. A classic hand-knotted wool rug can last a lifetime.

RULE: I don’t think there are too many “rules” in design. One guideline I stand by is that you need at least two feet of clearance to navigate around furniture and three feet around entry points.

QUICK CHANGE TO IMPROVE A ROOM: Paint is the quickest way to change the look and feel of a space; it adds a newness and freshness immediately.

MOST-AFFORDABLE UPDATE: A few new pillows or accessories can work wonders to renew a tired space.

FAVORITE PIECE IN YOUR OWN HOME: How can I choose just one!? I have an old oil painting I picked up in Paris which I adore. I also love my breakfast chairs.

FAVORITE DESIGN BOOK: Windsor Smith Homefront: Design for Modern Living – it full of everything I lust after!

INTERIOR DESIGN Shannon Gidney

COVER STORY

BUILDER Sanders Custom Homes PHOTOGRAPHY Dan Piassick

a dream

COME TRUE

Embarking upon their retirement years, Steve and Karen Piro enlisted Sanders Custom Homes and IBB Designer, Shannon Gidney, to help build their dream home. After Steve's successful career as President of Asko, Inc. and Karen culminating a 40-year career as the Independent Executive National Sales Director for Mary Kay Cosmetics, they were ready to begin a new, exciting phase in their lives and take on the task of designing a new place to call home. They wanted a home that was comfortable, inviting and stylish to enjoy with family and friends. Shannon worked with Sanders and the Piros on the project for more than a year, selecting all of the interior finishes as well as designing and executing all of the home's furnishings and drapery. Every last detail was accounted for, so all the Piros had to do was move in their clothing and personal belongings. "We wanted our home to reflect our personalities and taste, and Shannon accomplished this through her excellent listening and questioning skills. It was nice to work with someone who was so aware of our needs without forcing her agenda. She brought us wonderful ideas and appropriate selections from which to choose. We asked for finishes which would not be dated in a matter of years," Karen said.

ENTRY

A gracious entry welcomes you into the home with large single pane windows offering a picturesque view into the backyard resort. The windows are dressed with simple pleated patterned panels in neutral tones as to not distract from the views. A lighted Demilune chest and large shaped mirror fill the large arched alcove.

IBB AT HOME 21

DINING ROOM The dining room, located directly off of the entry, is painted in a rich midnight blue providing a sophisticated coziness to the large space. A layered mix of modern and natural elements dictates the style of furnishings throughout the home. A chrome, wood and glass table offers seating for eight which gets used frequently when entertaining family and friends. Side chairs in a lighter neutral fabric with chrome handle detail provide guests a comfortable place to dine, while midnight blue velvet chairs head the table. A hairon-hide rug brings pattern into the room and provides contrast to the rich wood floors. Motorized sheers filter intense sunlight during peak hours. A favorite element in the dining room is the oil pastel cubist self-portrait by their daughter, Allison Fuller, which was a high school AP art class assignment.

IBB AT HOME 23

LIBRARY The library is the perfect place for the Piros to kick up their feet and enjoy a cozy fire. Shannon designed two comfortable wing chairs and a leather cocktail ottoman for the sitting area. Bookcases, paneling and coffered ceiling in a deep espresso stain provide a warm and authentic setting. The artwork in the library, another produced by their daughter while in high school, was on display for a year in the Dallas Museum of Art's Young Master's Program.

IBB AT HOME 25

KITCHEN The kitchen has crisp white cabinetry which is a nice contrast to the rich wood flooring. A custom curved island was designed for friends to gather around while cooking. Gorgeous pendants hang over the large island like jewelry for the space.

IBB AT HOME 27

DINING AREA FAMILY ROOM The home has an open floor plan with the kitchen opening up onto the dining area and family room. Dark wood ceiling beams unify the spaces. Shannon chose a metal top dining table with a trestle wood base. Color was brought in with three blue-gray side chairs with a bench on the opposite side to maintain the spacious feeling of the room. Largescaled chandeliers hang over the dining and family room areas and provide symmetry in the space.

IBB AT HOME 29

FAMILY ROOM Shannon selected matching sofas to sit on opposite sides of an upholstered cocktail ottoman as part of the seating area. A pair of club chairs in a cut velvet fabric offer additional seating. The design is a relaxed and stylish look inviting guests to sit and stay a while. The triptych was created by their daughter, Allison, especially for their new family room. She used acrylic sprayed with water and glitter, and finished it with an epoxy resin for a high-gloss finish.

IBB AT HOME 31

WINE ROOM The temperature controlled wine storage and tasting room is Steve's favorite room in their home. Shannon introduced them to a talented local artisan who created the ambiance of a 1,000-yearold wine cellar which Steve had always envisioned. She specified a unique Katalox wood table to use for tastings and researching wines.

IBB AT HOME 33

MASTER SUITE Karen says, "The master bedroom and bath are my favorite rooms in our home. I love their beauty and serenity. The furniture is beautiful, while also being super comfortable. The linens and window treatments are yummy! The seating room in the master bedroom is perfect for morning reading, or for rocking grandchildren. The Glamcor Mirror in the master bath provides the perfect lighting for hair and makeup. It has Cool LED light technology which means Karen stays cool while getting ready.

THE PIROS COULDN'T BE MORE PLEASED WITH THE LOOK AND FEEL OF THEIR NEW HOME. STEVE RAVES, "SHANNON'S RARE BLEND OF ARTISTIC VISION AND ATTENTION TO DETAIL HELPED US TO ACHIEVE THIS. WE ALSO APPRECIATED HER TIMELINESS AND ADHERENCE TO BUDGET GUIDELINES."

ENTRY & STUDY

Layers of neutrals and textures greet you as you enter this brand new Highland Homes model home. Dark stained wood floors provide warmth and rich contrast to the white walls, while horizontal stripes lead you from the entry way into the spacious home. Â The study walls are painted in a pewter gray with white painted cabinetry. A reclaimed wood and iron desk floats in the center of the room for a workspace, and a white club chair offers a cozy place to sit and read. White linen drapery panels were designed with a leading edge to recall the pewter gray wall color.

DINING ROOM

The dining room is the first space you see upon entering the home. A shag rug grounds the dining area under a reclaimed wood table with tufted gray linen chairs. Pleated drapery panels bring pattern to the space and beautifully frame the windows. A reclaimed wood, iron and glass buffet was chosen as a functional serving piece.

IBB AT HOME 37

FAMILY ROOM

The color palette gets kicked up a notch when sunny yellow is introduced in the family room and kitchen area creating a cheerful atmosphere. A gray tufted sofa sits on a yellow patterned rug with curved yellow chairs for additional seating.Â

IBB AT HOME 39

KITCHEN

The kitchen's finishes are neutral which offers the perfect backdrop for yellow to shine. Gray quartz countertops provide a durable surface in the chef's kitchen. Crisp white cabinetry and a stone backsplash bring a fresh airy feel to the space. Comfy counter stools and breakfast nook chairs were designed in gray linen with a reclaimed wood finish.

IBB AT HOME 41

GAME ROOM

A play with stripes livens up the game room. A vertical striped fabric was selected for the drapery panels, while horizontal stripes were painted around the room in the same color palette. The white leather sectional provides sufficient seating for everyone to relax and watch TV. The cheerful yellow accent color is brought in through a patterned rug, a pair of chairs and accessories. Â

STUDY AREA

The spacious study area has built-in desks and room for a seating area. A pop of color was brought in with the desk chairs. The stripes continue into the playroom on the walls and as a detail on the drapery.

IBB AT HOME 43

MASTER BEDROOM

The master bedroom is a restful retreat designed in crisp white and charcoal gray. A weathered wood nightstand was used on one side of the bed with a desk on the other side. The seating area features a pair of club chairs gracefully positioned in front of sheer patterned panels.

IBB AT HOME 45

KIDS' BEDROOM

Color and pattern really makes the kids’ rooms fun. The girl's bedroom features painted vertical stripes in bold gray and yellow. Crisp white bedding gives balance to the patterned walls. The boy's room has a more neutral palette of gray and white with just subtle accents of yellow. Horizontal stripes were painted around the entire room. Metal nightstands and a reclaimed wood and metal dresser were selected for storage.

ENTERTAINING

HAPPY NEW YEAR! Now that the turkey dinners are over, it’s time to wrap presents and prepare for the fanciest holiday of the season! December 31st is circled on my calendar for a celebratory New Year’s Eve Dinner Party. It’s one of my favorite

holidays – a lavish night full of glamourous parties, glitzy dresses and festive dinners. Revelers have high expectations for the evening, so I’ve put together tips and tricks to ensure your NYE party goes off with a bang!

INVITATIONS:

A well-designed invitation gives your guests a glimpse of just how glamorous your NYE party will be. It's the first chance to sweep them off their feet, so make sure your invitations portray the elegance and experience you want to evoke.

LOCATION:

New Year’s Eve calls for opulence and grandeur. The best way to set your event apart is by selecting a swanky location. I love the idea of a rooftop dinner party with a show-stopping skyline view to really wow your guests. If that’s not in the cards this year, think of these as non-negotiables: extra space for mingling, a TV screen for the NYE broadcast, and a visible clock for the countdown.

DECOR:

Decorations set the ambience and formality for the entire evening, and it’s impossible to go over the top. This night calls for all things glittered, sparkly and metallic with a color palette of black, gold, silver and white. If you want something different, try champagne and pewter tones, or incorporate emerald green for the perfect pop of dramatic color.

MENU:

In the weeks prior, many of us have cooked or hosted

extravagant holiday dinners, so it’s nice to keep the NYE menu simple. A variety of cheeses and meats with a chocolate fondue is a fun and interactive option with minimal preparation. Plus, it provides entertainment for the guests. If you want to add an extra special touch, create a personalized printed menu to coordinate with the invitation.

CHAMPAGNE:

New Year’s Eve is known for it’s celebratory toasts with bubbly, so be sure to stock up on extra champagne and a nonalcoholic sparkling option for your soirée! Design a “Pop Fizz Clink” bar to display a signature cocktail and a selection of champagne options.

COUNTDOWN:

The countdown to midnight is often what guests look forward to the most. Create something memorable for the moment and make sure to announce the countdown with a microphone. Pass out party hats, horns, confetti and sparklers or even arrange a balloon drop. Finally, relax and celebrate with your guests. This is your last big gathering of the year. Grab a glass of champagne, enjoy another strawberry dipped in chocolate fondue, reminisce about 2016 and toast to the excitement of the New Year.
