Tenerife south hospital

Sick of waiting T

he south of Tenerife has been left on a trolley in a corridor waiting for a hospital for far too long. Have you seen Lisa?

contractors, etc, etc etc. The authorities have trotted out endless promises regarding completion dates. In the La Opinión newspaper in November 2000 the Tenerife Cabildo promised, “the North and South will have their hospitals before 2002”, the same newspaper, one month later, informed the public that the regional government and the Cabildo promised the centres would be operational in 2004, and El Dia, in September 2001 published a promise from the

Cabildo that “the work on the hospitals in the North and the South will begin at the end of 2002 and finish in 2005”. Current regional president Paulino Rivero told press agency EFE in June 2008 that the hospital would be finished “before 2011” and now we are told that phase one should be complete “in 19 months”, so in August 2012. But don’t hold your breath as it’ll be a long time before there’s a doctor available to revive you.

Bring Lisa back

As we go to press Maribel Risco Weyrich has asked the foreign press to help her search for her four year old daughter Lisa. Maribel thinks that her little girl has been taken to Germany by her father, Marcos, from Valle San Lorenzo, where the separated couple live in

neighbouring apartments, with joint custody of their child. On January 20th Marcos told Maribel he was taking Lisa on a trip to El Hierro, but would have her back the following day – that was the last Maribel has seen of her daughter, and when she went to Marcos’ apartment, she found that the child’s winter clothes had been taken and the apartment looked like it had been emptied. She also found out that Marcos has sold his car, and is no longer answering his Spanish mobile. If anyone has information regarding the whereabouts of Lisa they should contact the Spanish or German police.

this disgrace lies at the doors of the regional government, and since 1995 that government has been led by the CC (Coalicion Canaria) either in coalition with the PP (Partido Popular) or ruling as a minority. We are now in year 17 since the decision to build a public hospital in South Tenerife was first debated and agreed upon. There have been a myriad of excuses for the delays, including changes in structure, design, services to be offered, funding, problems with building

If the latest press release from the regional government, announcing that the first phase of the public hospital for South Tenerife will be complete in (hopefully) 19 months, is supposed to appease, it fails miserably. For too long people in South Tenerife, openly acknowledged as the island’s economic motor, have been relegated to the second division. The population has continued to grow, but services, sadly, have not. And if anything is proof of this it is the sick joke that is being played upon the population of the dates for completion of this hospital. There have been so many excuses given that it’s hard to believe any one of them, and while no single party or government can be blamed, it would appear that they have all failed to make this a genuine priority as opposed to one that can be trotted out as a sap to the poorer second class southerners now and then. Let’s be fair,
