Four in ten in San Miguel are foreign
oreign residents now make up just under half of the population of San Miguel in south Tenerife. The figure was given recently by the town’s mayor at the launch of a programme of activities aimed at integrating non-locals and enhancing
cultural awareness. Mayor Victor Chinea revealed that around 3,000 of San Miguel’s 18,000 registered residents are British, no doubt attracted by the great weather and sporting facilities, with a further 500 from Italy. Other significant population groups are Venezuelans and Cubans, according to

id the sloth would have been proud of one of his descendents at Loro Parque who has just provided the Puerto de la Cruz zoological theme park with two new additions. Bimba, a two toed sloth, became the first of her species worldwide to give birth to twins in captivity and has started a flurry of interest by animal experts, biologists and veterinary surgeons all over the globe.

Facilities such as the borough’s golf courses do attract a lot foreigners to the area
new Plaza Pública Llano del Camello, arts and crafts from Peru and Venezuela will be on display, visitors can sample gastronomy from around the world, Bollywood dancers will abound, as will music and movement from Chile, Sierra Leone, Bolivia, Venezuela, and Brazil as well as the Canaries. All in all this promises to be a fun filled afternoon for all comers of all ages. The British Consul will also be hosting an information stand, under the banner ‘Vivir en España, Living San Miguel’ with staff on hand to give out leaflets and information to interested parties. The event is a welcome move by the San Miguel council and a positive reflection of the moves in the Islands to encourage and assist integration in the many boroughs with high non-Spanish populations. On average 15 per cent of the population of Tenerife is foreign.
