PP pulls out of Canarian government over budget vote
Soria
T
he Canarian Government was plunged into chaos following the decision by the Popular Party (PP) to withdraw from the powersharing agreement in place since 2007. José Manuel Soria, the Canarian Finance Minister and regional PP boss, consulted his national leader Mariano Rajoy before announcing the shock decision, which was triggered by the Canarian Coalition’s (CC) support for Spanish premier José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero in the Budget vote in Madrid mid-October. “The CC have helped maintain Zapatero on life support instead of persuading him to call an early general election. In return they have obtained virtually nothing for the Canaries, so we feel we cannot continue in government with them” said Soria. The withdrawal, which was headline news throughout Spain, could
have a knock-on effect on partnership agreements in a number of town halls and island councils which the PP and CC currently rule together. Announcing his decision to leave government, Soria said he was concerned that the decision wouldn’t harm the islands, and his party would support the vote on budget estimates which his department had prepared. He added that the decision had been, “difficult”, and that in general the coalition had worked, “reasonably well” up to now, but the CC support for the Zapatero was, “disastrous for Spain and the Canarias”. Other departments in PP hands were Tourism, Agriculture and Health. The political landscape nationally also shifted, with a wide-scale cabinet reshuffle. Details were being finalised as we go to press, but moves include a significant boost for Interior Minister Rubalcaba who becomes second in command. Economist Valeriano Gomez replaces Corbacho in the Employment Ministry. Trinidad Jiménez moves from Health to Foreign Affairs, Rosa Aguilar, previously the, “jewel in the crown of the IU” (radical left wing party), takes Environment, Leire Pajín takes up the reins at Health and Ramón Júaregui also joins the cabinet.
Queen Elizabeth inaugural cruise
A new Queen in town P
roudly flying the blue ensign to denote her Captain, Chris Wells’, status as a member of the Royal Naval reserve, Queen Elizabeth, the latest Cunard liner, sailed into Santa Cruz harbour on October 19.
The President of the Santa Cruz de Tenerife Port’s Authority, Pedro Rodríguez Zaragoza,
presented an excellently crafted speech in English, but unfortunately seemed unaware of the nuances of some English words as he declared that the authorities were, “proud to welcome all the Queens to the Canaries”. Some visitors and members of staff were hard put to contain giggles. The ship has all the style and grace of the Queen Victoria
with some of the majesty of the Queen Mary 2 and is sure to become a firm Cunard favourite. Decorated in exquisite detail in the fashion of 80 or 90 years ago, this latest Queen is traditionally Cunard but with all the latest technology. The 170 years of Cunard history can be seen reflected in the display cases around the ship, with special reference to the Queen Elizabeth and the Queen Elizabeth 2. Diners still eat off Wedgwood plates and sip from Waterford glassware
in The Verandah restaurant and the famous White Star service is still proudly on offer in the Britannia restaurant and elsewhere in the ship. There are some 1,000 crew to take care of the 2,000 passengers who were mainly British and American with some Germans and a group of 200 Japanese. Once in port approximately 500 chose to go on organised excursions, with the most popular option Teide National Park, and many more decided to organise individual trips with taxi drivers or simply stroll around the capital. Of the visitors ashore that we spoke to, some were blasé, some impressed and some frankly bored, “you got nothing here we ain’t got in the States,” one American visitor claimed. However our favourite comments came from David and Jenny who’ve visited Santa Cruz before and love it. Swinging a bag of gifts they’d purchased in the Casa de los Balcones shop (no Chinese copies for these canny buyers) they announced their belief that cruise visitors should leave some money in the local economy, affirmed how much they loved Santa Cruz and told us, “we don’t tend to go on excursions, we like to meet the local people. Passengers should be encouraged to wander around all the shops and the little bars in the back streets – lovely.”
