terms of damage to the holiday sector. Employees of the publicly-owned airpor t authority (AENA) have served notice that they will strike on 22 key air traffic days from 20 April until 31 August, bringing airports to a standstill. The pros-
pect of massive cancellations and thousands of stranded tourists prompted the Canarian government to call for Madrid to order full staffing cover for Canarian airports as par t of any emergency measures adopted to cope with the strike. The European

Commission has also been urged to intervene. As we go to press, already airlines throughout Europe, including Ryanair, have warned that they will not be held to ransom by the ongoing AENA conflict over privatisation plans by the Spanish government. Michael O’Leary stated, “Europe’s airlines and passengers suffered at the hands of air traffic control providers throughout 2010. Now, ahead of yet another Spanish strike, Ryanair is calling on the EU to take action to prevent further strike action. “Action must be taken at EU level to ensure that the ‘right to strike’ is removed from essential airport ser vices”, he added. Strike dates already being proposed include April 20, 21, 24, 25 and 30, which will cause chaos for the Canary Islands’ Easter business.
110 top speed in Spain
Slow down
Despite the protests from many quarters, including one Fernando Alonso, the proposed, albeit reportedly temporary, change to Spain’s upper speed limit on all roads went ahead on March 7th. On the night of Sunday March 6th hundreds of traffic employees on ladders, armed with stickers, changed speed limit signs all over most of the country, and on Monday morning there was noticeable caution on the roads. Here in the Canaries it was combined with less traffic given that schools were closed for Carnaval, so fewer cars at morning rush hour. One driver told Island Connections, “I overtook two taxis on the way to work, and I was only doing 100! I don’t think that’s ever happened before”. The move, a controversial one, was introduced by the government to, they say, save energy in response to the rise in oil prices as a result of the unrest in the Arab world. Libya supplies about 13 per cent of Spain’s oil. It is supposed to last for four months, and already the change (and change back one assumes) will cost an estimated €250,000. In the Canary Islands the Civil Guard’s Traffic Branch said that no leniency would be shown to speeders who ignore the new limit and are caught on radar, although points will not be docked from licences unless offenders are clocked at 151 kmh or above.
