“We are in the middle of an internal investigation.”
A
deje mayor, José Miguel Rodríguez Fraga, brought forward a press conference to deal with rumours relating to substantial fraud in the public company engaged by the council to deal with proper ty related capital gains tax (plusvalia). The as-yet unnamed female employee of the company, and not a civil servant as the mayor was at pains to point out, has resigned, “voluntarily”, and an internal investigation is currently underway. Some press reports indicate that the amount that has gone missing may be between €300,000 and €400,000, though the council chief appeared to pour
cold water on suggestions that the missing tally would be that high. According to the mayor the company was alerted to the possibility of irregularities after a foreign resident noticed something was not quite right in her statements. The information was passed on and received on March 21st, shor tly after which the internal investi-
gation got underway. As yet there are no decisions taken about any possible legal action to be taken. “We are waiting for those in charge of the investigation to give us more information…once we have that information we will take action,” Rodríguez Fraga told the press. “I don’t know yet if we are talking about huge embezzlement…but we are investigating, we will get to the bottom of this with all the consequences that entails”. He asked for prudence and the time needed to get to the bottom of the matter, promising that the investigation would be “fully transparent”. He added, they would not and could not take action “based on rumours”, although both the Par tido Popular and Coalicion Canarias
representatives in the council have called for the matter to be placed with the courts immediately. The indications are that this has been going on for a number of years, “six or seven”, and that it was “a system of persistent inter ference in the company’s IT system that was very elaborate” given that it went undetected for so long, and passed through auditors and annual end of year inspections. There is, as yet, no evidence to suspect any other person in the company was involved. The mayor apologised to the people of the borough, and in bullish mood said “my attitude and my behaviour will be the defence of all the citizens of Adeje, let no one doubt that”. Arona council is also in the news, with reports that the local courts have ruled that they owe almost €1.5 million for occupying offices in the Zentral Center but failing to meet the ‘change in use’ requirements agreed with the owners, something the council say they were not able to do as it would have been against the norms of the PIOT – the island’s of ficial ordinance plan. Can Amaral give the fans something to cheer about?
D
avid Amaral has just been appointed as the new trainer of CD Tenerife and follows Arconada, Merino, Mandía and most recently Tapía in the job. He takes over for the last ten games of the season and with a guarantee that he will stay on even if Tenerife are relegated. It will be hoped that the new man can stop the run of bad results that recently saw some fans vent their fury on the team bus carrying the players returning from the away game in Tarragona. Astonished players on board were on the receiving end of a string of insults from the furious crowd, who fled the scene when police arrived. The appointment of Amaral has been given a mixed reception, with many happy to see a local manager given the opportunity to lead the fight against the drop but others querying Amaral’s track record given his two past stints as manager here, both of which ended in his departure due to poor results.
Local elections, 22 May 2011
Your vote, your voice! All EU citizens registered on the padrón (official council register) as a resident in Spain can vote, and you have until and including Monday 11th April to check with your local council whether you are on the list of registered voters.
Local councils make quite a dif ference to your day
to day life here in Spain, and it only takes a few votes to change the balance, as results four years ago in parts of the Canary Islands proved. The elections are your opportunity to have your say in who makes the decisions about public services in your area, and an opportunity for non-Spanish residents to take part in the democratic process.
