Rockslide beach reopens L
os Guíos beach in Los Gigantes where two women were killed by a rockslide 17 months ago reopened in time for Easter Week. The beach had been closed following the tragic death of the two women on November 1st 2009 during a heavy fall of rock from the cliff behind. Investigations to find someone responsible laid the blame partly on the local council who failed to cordon off the cliff area after a previous rock fall and as the head of the council the local mayor, Juan Damián Gorrín Ramos, may face a serious court case which he fears could bar him from public office. Political repercussions also continue as rows developed about public funds being set aside to pay for the mayor’s defence by private lawyers when the council has its own legal team and Gorrín himself felt let down over the tragedy by his party of the time, the Canarian Coalition, feeling he had been left to face the music alone and has switched to the

The race took in some of the most emblematic landscapes of Tenerife
Tenerife Bluetrail
Extreme enjoyment
new long distance race was brought to a successful conclusion mid April. Atough
The Tenerife Bluetrail was raced over four distances, 95, 52, 21 and 4.5 kilometres through some of the most emblematic landscapes of the island. The longest and most challenging race, the Ultratrail, which started in Los Cristianos and finished in La Orotava, was won by 35 year old Miguel Heras, of Salamanca, the invited specialist in this type of extreme race in a time of 10 hours 43 minutes and 18 seconds, over an hour ahead of his nearest competitor the tinerfeñan José David Lutzardo and third placed Pablo Criado. First placed woman was Nerea Martínez at 13 hours, 48 minutes and 29 seconds. Full coverage in our sports section. Conservative Partido Popular for the upcoming elections. Work carried out to the beach includes improving the lighting and public toilets as well as the restraining and reinforcing of the cliff wall with anchor points, cement and thick steel netting. In a statement to the press, Gorrín announced, “It’s a great day for the area, not just for beach
users but particularly for local traders, who have been hit hard by the enforced closure”. On the day the beach reopened we went along to see for ourselves the surprising amount of movement that was already taking place along the pedestrian only access road and local shopkeepers were both, “delighted” and “amazed” at
the way news had got around so quickly. German swallow, Irse, was first into the water, glad to have her regular swimming ground back and a young couple from Shropshire, the Adams, had arrived the previous day for a repeat bucket and spade holiday in the area with their two children and been disappointed at first until they
found out that the beach was reopening. Present for the low key reopening were the mayor and Emilio José Navarro Castanedo, the councillor responsible for this area, and the mayor told us he was pleased that there was, “good news for a change”, although miffed that the day had been marred by the blocking
off of vehicle access to the port. “We passed a motion in council to ask the port’s authority to take more responsibility and this is possibly their retaliation,” he remarked, “it just doesn’t make sense!” As we left the area, the lawyers were gathering information to go before the judge and have the area reopened to the public.
