oth opposition leader Mariano Rajoy and the countr y’s leader José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero visited the Canar y Islands in recent weeks in the run up to the May 22 local elections. While at national level polls are showing Rajoy’s conservative Partido Popular (PP), to be in front and set to take over a number of councils, here in the Canary Islands the outcome is less certain, and of course the Canarian Coalition (CC) is a major force in the islands, and is the party at the helm of the regional government, led by Paulino Rivero. However that coalition broke apart (as it did at insular level in Tenerife) and there is probably no love lost between the two parties. In other words, if no one party wins an overall majority on May 22nd the make-up of a coalition could go any number of ways. At council level people do tend to vote locally, though national politics and policies do, obviously, play some part in decision making. If you are a non-Spanish EU national and have registered, you are entitled to vote at council level. Inside you will find more information on voting and how the main parties in the islands stand on a number of relevant issues. Pages 6 and 7
