redictions that Canarian PP leader José Manuel Soria would be rewarded for the party’s success in the islands in last month’s general election have proven accurate.
The new cabinet announced on December 21st following Mariano Rajoy’s election as Spain’s new leader saw the Gran Canarian given one of the 13 portfolios in the slim-line cabinet. The former mayor of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and president of the Gran Canaria Cabildo has been made Minister for Industry, Energy and Tourism, areas of key importance to the Canarian economy. His appointment has been generally well received in political circles. Continued on page 3

y first inclination, when they told me, was to get on a plane to go and talk to my sisters, but this is where we live”, admits Gwen Bannister when the tests finally confirmed what she and
husband Carl suspected – their precious six year old son Aaron had tested positive for Duchenne’s, a incurable form of muscular dystrophy.
