British Consul
Margarita, Gloria, Anita, Ana, Baz and Rocio
Embracing it all By Sheila Collis
W
e were delighted to get the opportunity to meet María Leng, just a few weeks after her official appointment as the new British Consul to the Canar y Islands. Naturally bilingual thanks to an English father and a mother from Galicia in northern Spain, María spent much of her childhood summer holiday time with her mother’s family in Ferrol. She was born in St Andrews, the eldest of four children. Her father worked in the oil industry and travelled for his job, which is how he met his Spanish wife and they eventually settled in Fife. María was educated in Scotland, studied for her degree mainly at the Robert Gordon University in Aberdeen, with one year in France, and also speaks French and German. Young for her position, María is obviously a high flyer. “I worked hard and moved up quickly in every job I had,” she admits modestly. Previous experience includes work in the oil industry, a paper mill and seven years working for the Scottish Government where she was the Manager for International Trade for the whole of the South of Scotland. She joined the Foreign and Commonwealth Consulate service two and a half years ago as Vice Consul in the Balearics area, mainly based in Ibiza, where she also has family. During her time there she developed excellent relationships with the various official bodies. In her private life, “I tend to get involved too much” she stated, referring to her interests in theatre and Carnival groups and attempts to learn to play the Gallego Gaita (bagpipes) and flamenco dancing, although, laughing, she didn’t rule out timple (Canarian miniature guitar) or Canarian folk dancing classes.
Breast cancer charity
Mad dip
Puerto de Santiago resident, Anita Knight, decided she wanted to, “do something mad before her 50th birthday” and chose a sponsored Christmas Day dip in the English Channel in aid of Ámate, a Tenerife breast cancer charity.
At 11am on the day, with temperatures of minus 7ºC, between four and five hundred people gathered at Exmouth, to brave the ice covered sands and the freezing briny, some for charity and others, “just for fun”. Many were wearing Christmas hats and singing carols. Anita ran into the water with her son, Marvin, whilst husband
Baz and daughter Natalie were the on shore support team with a hot water bottle and towels. The event was filmed and can be seen at Anita’s Christmas Day swim, Exmouth, 2010 in Youtube. Thanks to all the sponsors, especially friends at Tipsy Terrace, tennis players, visitors and friends at the gym and some excellent promotional work by Baz with customers at his gigs in Domingo’s, Las Rosas and DJ’s, Anita managed to raise €2,088.70 for Ámate, whose representatives, Rocio, Margarita, Gloria and Ana presented her with a certificate to show their appreciation.
