A fish cage which broke free from its moorings during recent heavy swells
Cages to go? Fish-farming
he Canarian government has taken the first steps towards the removal of the giant cages used for T fish-farming off the coast of Los Cristianos.
Criticised as an unnecessary eye-sore by the tourist sector and firmly opposed by traditional fishermen, the circular cages have been the subject of heated dispute in recent years. The government has now served formal notice to the company awarded the licence to install them a decade ago, in some cases with EU funding, that the licence will be withdrawn due to the lack of activity. “Many of the cages have been abandoned and are literally falling apart, with parts washing up dangerously on the shore” said one local fisherman. The firm responsible has been given less than two weeks to give its explanations before a final decision is taken.
Schools out for summer
J
ust in time for the summer solstice, June 21st, temperatures began to rise and while it might have got just a little bit too hot for a few days, with the end of the month registering a mini heatwave, things cooled down as schools closed their doors and the kids began their summer holidays.
But it’s not just all about sun, sea and sand, though those bits are nice too. In this issue of Island Connections we begin a series of summer specials, with a focus on golf this fortnight, as well as listing a range of summer camp options for the kids in our What’s On section. So chill out and cool down, let the kids burn off their excess energies in summer activities while you relax into the next two months of summertime in the Canary Islands, where the living is easy… Sailing in Arona, just one of the many activities on offer for kids and adults in the islands this summer
