Taxi driver protest
Skirting the issue Las Palmas taxi drivers who took part in a novel protest at the new obligation to wear a uniform to smarten up the image of the sector will not face disciplinary action by the city authorities. Several drivers expressed their opposition, to this and other rules brought in at the beginning of the month, by donning black skirts instead of the mandatory trousers to go with the blue polo shirt that also forms part of the uniform. Media coverage of the protest initially caused some anger at City Hall but the councillor responsible for taxis has played down the importance of the rebellion. “We will not be taking action. Indeed you could say it is a rather nice way to air complaints. If we are anything it is an open-minded city and this might even be good for the image of Las Palmas,” said Angel Sabroso, who denied reports that there had been persecution of the skirt-wearing drivers.

World tourism day
What a welcome!
If you are waiting for a visit from friends or relatives tell them to fly in to Tenerife South airport on September 26 for an especially warm welcome. In honour of World Tourism Day, for one whole day members of the southern tourism initiative centre (CIT Sur) will be manning a stand in the baggage reclaim area to share a selection of all the goodies produced in the Canaries with arriving visitors. The actual World Tourism Day is the Saturday, but many more people are expected to arrive on the 26th, so they have moved the celebration forward 24 hours to ensure that as many people as possible benefit. This wonderful way of acknowledging the role that tourism plays in our society nowadays was originated by the United Nations World Tourism Organisation in 1980. It is intended to raise awareness of the character of tourism within the international community and to demonstrate how it affects social, cultural, political

and economic values worldwide. These days an annual theme is elected and a different destination each year is chosen to host the
main conference. Two years ago it was in the Canary Islands, in Gran Canaria. This year it is in Guadalajara, Mexico.
At the airport all the CIT Sur team and enthusiastic volunteers will be in regional costume for the day. Incoming tourists will be welcomed with an amazing array of local wines, cheeses, fresh and dried fruit, nibbles, cakes, pastries, biscuits and cut meats – all delicious and absolutely free! From early in the morning until late in the evening, Cit Sur staff and officials will be on hand to offer the best that the Islands has to offer, all donated by local companies as a way of saying, “Thank you for choosing Tenerife”! Staff from Island Connections, Kanaren Express and Island Connections Russian will once again be with them to lend a helping hand and to share out our newspapers to visitors. So, drop by the stand, say hello, try some of the fabulous local products whilst you’re waiting for your suitcase to be brought from the plane and enjoy a Canarian-style welcome that is second to none!
