Vandalism and ambulances

When rage can kill Juan Fernando López Aguilar (left) stands up for his home territory

MEP gets involved in Brussels

Aguilar airs Brexit concerns

The Canarian socialist MEP Juan Fernando López Aguilar has made his preoccupation over the possible consequences of Brexit clear in a discussion with Brexit negotiator Michel Barnier. The meeting was also attended by representatives of other ultra-peripheral regions in Europe. The more remote areas of Europe could be particularly affected by the United Kingdom leaving the European Union. Many projects in the outermost regions are supported by European cohesion and structural development funds. Continued on page two

On the night of May 23 in Puerto de La Cruz, an unknown person attacked eleven ambulances by slashing the tyres and smashing the windows. What’s wrong with the people who roam around at night, seemingly hell-bent on destruction? Is it boredom, frustration, envy or anger? Whatever the motive, there is no excuse for it. This is especially true when ambulances are affected, and it is precisely these offences that are increasing. In this most recent case, the ambulances were not emergency vehicles, but those that pick up patients to take them for their dialysis, cancer treatments or other diagnostic procedures, but it is still a frightening act. Despite rapid reorganisation according to the degree of urgency, 33 patients were not able to receive their scheduled therapies the following day. Also, the ambulance which is available for emergencies in the Mount Teide National Park was among the vehicles damaged.

Deliberate destruction

Lives put at risk set on fire in 2012 to 1,759 in 2017. The provinces with the most incidents in the country are Andalusia (464), Madrid (390), Valencia (194) and, sadly, the Canary Islands (137). Vehicles parked in the cities of Madrid, Valencia, Seville and Las Palmas de Gran Canaria are most at risk. Data from the Basque Country and Catalonia are not included in the statistics because these regions have their own police forces. But what could be the reason for the vandalism? This is also the question posed by Socialist MEP, Miguel Ángel Heredia, who brought up the subject of these statistics in Parliament. He directed them straight to the office of the Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy. Heredia stressed “We must counteract the intolerable rise in the number of cars set on fire with appropriate measures. In my opinion, this increase is directly linked to Rajoy’s taking office. Since he became prime minister, the staffing levels of both the National Police and the Guardia Civil have been continually reduced. As

Imagine waking up... and your car is burned out

Continued from front page This was the third attack on emergency services in just a few months. In November last year, an assault was carried out in Telde, Gran Canaria, on eight ambulances which burned out completely. A few days later, three ambulances and a van went up in flames on a site in Las Palmas. Fortunately, this latter case involved vehicles that had already been dis-

carded by the ambulance service. In some scenarios these attacks are possibly the result of increased charge requests to the National Health system by the private companies which run the services despite repressed wages and poor working conditions. Nevertheless, this is an act against humanity that could prevent lives being saved or the sick from getting the treatment they desperately need.

Countdown worries A prolific 26-year-old graffiti sprayer, responsible for over 200 works, was arrested last November in Santa Cruz

Not only ambulances affected In the Canary Islands, the number of vehicles that have been set on fire has increased significantly. Whilst only 13 burning cars were reported in 2012, no less than 137 cars went up in flames last year. Most of them, 96, were in the province of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. It is a figure that is extremely worrying, because this kind of discharge of pent-up rage can affect anyone. In the past, it was apparently mainly ultraleftists who used fire attacks

a result, we have fewer police patrols on the road, especially at night when most incidents happen.” These cutbacks within the security forces, coupled with the fact that Rajoy’s government has still done nothing to counter the high youth unemployment rate in the last six years, indeed pose a risk. Young people who are bored and feel hopeless resemble a loaded powder keg that only needs a tiny spark for detonation. In the face of such violent attacks against private or public property, vandalism in the form of graffiti or, as recently, a paint bag slapped on the chest of the angel on the Monumento de Ángel or Monumento de Franco, as it’s also called, in Santa Cruz de Tenerife almost seems like small fry, but should not be underestimated either. Vandalism of this kind costs the city and local authorities many thousands of euros each year, causing an unplanned burden on the budget and, of course, these cleaning costs must also be borne by all citizens. n

But nowadays, any cars parked on streets are simply set on fire. In very few cases there are concrete acts of revenge against a certain person, but usually it’s simply coincidence that makes the owner a victim. This is not only a problem in the Canary Islands, but also in the Peninsula, where some cars have even exploded. The car burning trend there has risen by 830 per cent in the last six years, from 215 cars Disclaimer: Island Connections Newspaper is published and printed fortnightly by ISLAND CONNECTIONS S.L. Will UK‘s EU exit affect our economy? Continued from front page Aguilar told those present “We need to know how Brexit and the associated ten per cent reduction in the European budget will affect these funds, because they are essential for many processes in the Canary Islands.” The Canarian socialist pointed out that there are also other facts to consider, such as what possible impact Brexit will have on flights. He explained “Most flights to the Islands are operated by airlines funded by British capital, like Iberia. At the moment the number of British arrivals is increasing, and the real estate sector is also currently benefiting from British investments. However, this is only possible if flight connections are maintained.” Aguilar also raised another important issue - agriculture. “Products such as our tomatoes, potatoes and bananas are largely exported to the UK. Here, too, it must be made clear to what extent Brexit will affect future trading” he added. Many questions are still open and must be brought to the negotiating table in plenty of time. n

Island council stands behind Palestine

Calls for a stop to violence in Israel In the last May plenary session of the Tenerife Island Council, the Israeli government was called upon to stop the violence across factions against peaceful demonstrators immediately and to limit itself to averting acute danger. In these cases, too, the procedure should be as non-violent as possible. The institutional resolution deplores the death of the Palestinians in Gaza who protested against the move of the American embassy to Jerusalem and condemns the Israeli attacks. It agrees with the Secretary General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, the representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and the Vice-President of the European Commission, Federica Mogherini, that the events are even considered so serious and reprehensible that a transparent independent investigation into the incidents is called for. They also support the European Union resolution calling for an end to the separan tion of the Palestinian population by the Israeli state.

35 years of pancreas transplants

HUC: A true life saver The seventh national reunion on pancreatic transplantation was recently celebrated in Barcelona. It was instigated by the Spanish transplantation organisation to search for a consensus on how to proceed in the coming years. The Spanish transplant team, headed by the expert Dr. Fernandez Cruz from the Clinica Hospital in Barcelona, has been successfully transplanting pancreases for 35 years. The HUC in Tenerife is one of the best transplant clinics in the country, both for the number of organ transplants performed and for the success of the operations. It was on May 22, 2002, when Antonio Alarcó, Professor of Surgery at the University of La Laguna (ULL) and Head of the Department of Pancreas Transplantation at the HUC, successfully performed a pancreas transplant operation for the first time. Since then, he and his team of around 80 have performed 110 pancre-

On the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the initiation of Spanish pancreas transplantation medicine in 2008, an article on the subject was published by the HUC experts. Today, this is held as a benchmark article about this special form of transplantation. The HUC is one of only seven hospitals in the country prepared for this kind of transplantation

and is equipped with highly technological and state-of-theart apparatus. With 4,818 organ transplants last year from 2,018 donors, Spain is the world leader in terms of willingness to donate organs and in the successful transplantation of them. The medical teams are well prepared both in terms of their qualifications and the technology at their disposal, and thus play a pioneering role. Thanks to this willingness and professionalism, around 110,000 people in Spain can

now continue to live or have an enormous improvement in their quality of life, thanks to a donor organ or the over 500,000 who have received transplanted cells. Canarian transplantation was initiated at the turn of the millennium thanks to Professor Fernández Cruz and Professor Hans Solinger of Wisconsin, who act as godparents of the HUC team. This was the first step towards today's benchmark success, which has since saved the lives of n many people.

The right medicine in the right dose

Vive la differénce!

Alonso presents the futuristic project

Genetics, constitution and other individual factors are the subject of a research project in which the Tenerife Island Council led by president Carlos Alonso, in cooperation with the Techological Institute for Renewable Energies, ITER, is investing a total of €2.7 million between 2018 and 2021. The goal is to achieve personalised medication for patients. Antonio García Marichal, the councillor for Tenerife Area 2030, explained "We will not only invest in this initiative ourselves, but we also want to attract research funds from

other budgets to the island in order to establish a research centre and create qualified jobs. This is a contribution to scientific and technological development in Tenerife and the Canary Islands, as provided for in Agenda 2030." In addition, ITER's multidisciplinary work is pointing the way forward with biomedicine, pharmacy, molecular biology, statistics, genetic research, and computer science. Many branches of science are brought together in this project in order to achieve an improved therapy result in Canary Islands’

health care for all patients. The aim is to develop formulas that enable individually tailored medication, adapted to the respective disease, thus also reducing the side effects of drugs and the over-prescription of antibiotics. From currently seven jobs and research positions, 25 are to be created in the medium term, creating a new method for future medicine decisions. The Canary Islands Foundation for Sanitary Research (Funcanis), the University Hospital Nuestra Señora de Candelaria in Santa Cruz, the

Canary Islands universities and the Canary Islands Government education department are all among those involved in the development of the project. In the first two planning years, the project was presented in 15 papers at six national and international congresses and seven articles are currently in preparation for publication. National and international cooperation and regular exchanges with universities and scientists in the Azores and Madeira, as well as on a broader international level, will be sought. ITER Director of Genomics Research, Carlos Flores explained "It’s a strategic commitment to the development of personalised healthcare in the Canary Islands. We want to create synergies at local and international level and promote research and the use of an area that is concentrated in the ITER genomics laboratory. It combines the skills of a highly qualified team of people on site, in combination with the functions of the TeideHPC supercomputer which generates information in the order of six terabytes per week." It’s the mastermind which supports our scientists in their calculations. An interesting project which will hopefully result in better medical n care for all.

Ópera de Tenerife

The focus is on the Italian classics

Ópera de Tenerife is including the essential Italian classics such as Rossini, Donizetti and Puccini in its 20182019 season. The Tenerife Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Nikolas M. Nägele, Christopher Franklin, Yi-Chen Lin and Giampaolo Bisanti, will be performing the productions at the Tenerife Auditorium alongside the Tenerife Opera Choir conducted by Carmen Cruz. All the titles in this season, which begins on October 25, are Auditorio de Tenerife productions, although some are shared with other venues. La Traviata (Verdi) will visit Adeje and Puerto de La Cruz in the format of Opera Pocket. The didactic proposal Ópera en Ruta will bring the lyrical world closer to new audiences and the children’s project Manos a la Ópera will stage Pulgarcito (Henze). The season concludes with the 6th edition of the International Tenerife Opera Singing Competition. This season’s collaborations are with the Oviedo Opera Foundation and the theatres Comunale di Bologna, n Colón de Buenos Aires and Argentino de La Plata.

Alarm in Las Palmas

Gunman causes a stir

What some people do out of carelessness is so bizarre that it can only be described as stupidity, especially during a time of increased terrorist alerts and armed attacks. This is the only thing that may help us to understand an incident that took place in Las Palmas during the penultimate week of May. Passers-by reported to the police that they had observed a man walking around the Las Arenas shopping mall at the southern end of Playa de Las Canteras, carrying a gun. Local Police officers followed him inconspicuously. The handle of a revolver appeared to be actually protruding from the back pocket of his jeans. After leaving the shopping centre, the police followed the man to his home in Arucas where other officers were already waiting for him. Hardly anyone could have been more amazed than the alleged gunman, because the firearm turned out to be a ‘fun mobile phone case’. The police have turned to the public, calling for more common sense so that such confusion and unnecessary callouts could be avoided. n

International seminar for sustainable regions

There is no plan B At the International Seminar for Sustainable Regions, held in Agüimes, Gran Canaria, Island President Antonio Morales was a strong advocate of efficient environmental protection and effectual rethinking. Morales said that "Globalisation is of no use if the individual areas don't participate" emphasising that each community and each individual citizen must do something towards more sustainable living and thus contribute to saving the island, the archipelago and the planet, because decay is advancing at a frightening speed. That was not his only point. Numerous research projects by national and international institutions prove him right. However, the US president unmistakably denounced Morales over his “negative mentality”. This non-recognition of facts by President Trump is no coincidence, after all, the multinational Koch

Morales is committed to environmental protection and development

Industries, based in Wichita, Kansas, is one of the main financial sources of the Trump era with institutes and companies all over the world, 137 of which are in Spain. Through this presence, they try to influence governments and entrepreneurship, but why? This answer is unnecessary when you look at the industries in which the group is active. These include oil refineries and trading, gas, chemicals, energy, minerals, fertilisers, pulp and paper, raw materi-

als trading and various investment and financial sectors. In these industries, thinking about protecting the environment is damaging to business from the company's point of view. So they close their eyes and hope it goes away. It's business as usual.

Facts and figures However, the math doesn’t work and sooner or later the results will make themselves felt. At the meeting, the Club

of Rome organisation warned that if this rhythm were to be maintained, in twelve years' time, the area of two complete planets would be needed to conserve the Earth. If everyone lived to the same standards as an average citizen in the USA, 4.5 planets would be needed. CO2 emissions have increased by 35 per cent in the last 20 years, so much so that around 90 per cent of Europeans inhale polluted air and around 400,000 people die prematurely as a result, and we are not immune to this even in the Canary Islands. The Spanish meteorological office Aemet measured a record CO2 value of 414 parts per million at the Izaña station in Tenerife in mid-May. The limit which is considered dangerous, is 400, and the UN has long understood that global problems need 'global players'. That is why it is committed to environmental agreements such as those in Stockholm, Kyoto

and Rio de Janeiro with the support of numerous universities and scientists from all over the world. The deforestation problem is progressing by 14,000 hectares per day, thousands of examples of marine fauna are already extinct. By 2050 there will probably be more plastic in the sea than fish, and even in the species-rich Canarian waters, only ten per cent as many fish are still living compared with 50 years ago. Fish weighing more than five kilos must now be tested for Ciguatera before consumption in order to avoid food poisoning due to toxic substances. Cyanobacteria are no longer unknown. The ecological footprint left by the Canary Islands is ten times larger than their territory. According to the United States Academy of

Sciences, the sea has risen by ten centimetres in just over a decade and calculates that if this continues at the same speed, many beaches such as Maspalomas and Puerto de La Luz in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria will be submerged by the end of the century. Each Spaniard will need about 5.3 hectares of land to cover his needs, but will only have 1.8 hectares available. In the Canary Islands we have only 0.1 hectares. Another observation indicates that the trade winds are turning east, which means that the climate in the Canary Islands is becoming increasingly tropical. The actual effects are not yet foreseeable, but these figures clearly show that there is no time to lose, but time to act if we don’t want to put the future at risk.

31.5.2018 – 13.6.2018 Eco-island Gran Canaria This is why Antonio Morales is committed to transforming the island. The focus is on environmental protection, food and energy autonomy, green and blue industries and public participation. A blue economy means that the economy is environmentally friendly and works in cycles so that resources are used optimally. The waste from one product is used as the starting point for another. What does this mean for an island like Gran Canaria?

ISLAND CONNECTIONS 822 The Island council will invest €4.5 million annually in planting half a million trees over the next few years. A total of €14.5 million is being invested in environmental protection. Tourism on the island should be developed in such a way that it attracts mainly tourists who appreciate and protect the local area and the environment. Around €18 million is being invested in renewable energies to desalinate and purify water. Family agriculture and responsible consumption are to be promoted. The Island council has set up a Climate Action Group, a Landscape Obser-

essential. Morales explained "We have everything here wind, sun, sea and, if the latest studies confirm it, even geothermal energy, a virtually infi-

nite, stable and clean energy source". He encourages the islanders to rethink their habits, especially their own consumption, for example by car sharing. Morales added "There is still only one person in 75 per cent of all vehicles that are driven to the capital. This must change and the increase in the use of electric cars must also be encouraged. The protection of the environment and the fight against poverty are our major goals in Gran Canaria." He stressed that "This is no easy task, because we have to overcome the sometimes brutal

attacks by the media, companies and other politicians, and almost any means is fine with them". However, he also has comrades-in-arms on the other islands and at various political and international levels. "A balanced transformation requires not only protection of the environment, but also the socio-economic development of society. We need a frontal attack on poverty, unemployment and inequality. There is no healthy economy without a healthy society," warns Spanish philosopher Adela Cortina from n Valencia.

Race Against Hunger a great success The Colegio Internacional Costa Adeje continues its fight against malnutrition, and once again has celebrated the Carrera Contra el Hambre (Race Against Hunger) with great participation levels. On May 18, the Race Against Hunger took place in the school grounds with the sole aim of raising funds to combat hunger. Around 70 teachers and over 800 students

between the ages of five and 18 took part in the event, held for the fifth consecutive year. On this occasion, they were all hydrated thanks to Fuente Alta, which backed this initiative by donating a large number of bottles of water. This charity race took place with the premise that 'every step counts', hence for every lap or kilometre covered, families and friends donated one euro.

This sporting competition is held every year by the Colegio Internacional Costa Adeje, the only educational centre in the south of Tenerife to participate in the initiative.

Action Against Hunger The Carrera Contra el Hambre is an initiative of Action Against Hunger, an independent international humanitarian organisa-

tion that fights child malnutrition while ensuring the provision of water and secure livelihoods for the most vulnerable. The race uses sport, solidarity and education to raise awareness and engage students in a global challenge that already involves more n than 30 countries. Güímar dog-fighting case

Almost 500 years imprisonment requested In February last year, a spectacular raid on a finca with a luxury villa in the Medida area above Güímar caused a sensation. A strong police presence, including a reconnaissance operation with drones and a helicopter is a rather rare sight in Tenerife. All the better, many still remember it. It was about gaining access to expose a criminal gang that organised dog fights. A total of eight people were arrested in the Canary Islands including the head of the organisation. Another mastermind, who is said to have made national and international contacts and organised illegal fights, was arrested in Madrid. The arrest of a Local Police officer from Adeje and a vet in La Orotava, who both held important positions within the organisation, was particularly explosive news. A total of 37 people were arrested during the course of the operation, 23 of whom are now facing charges. Among them were three women and ten men, who acted as the Canary Islands branch of the

In Madrid, Alicante, Almería and Murcia there were other centres from where the fights were organised or where the breeding of fighting dogs was carried out. Numerous apartments were searched, including those in El Ortigal near La Laguna and in La Orotava.

The prosecution was joined by the Podemos political party as the people's representative. A party spokesperson, Mila Hormiga explained "We were on site as soon as the police operation became known. We know that secret illegal dog fights are still being organised today. This court process has to be a deterrent." Podemos has demanded

a total of 122 years in prison for the eight main suspects and 471 years for all 23 arrested. For the Local Police officer F.C.G., from Adeje, who was part of the leadership, for example, they demand 30 years and three months in prison, and for other leaders and coordinators of the illegal ring sentences of up to 22 years, as well as bans on keeping animals and occupations connected with them. The party requests that the veterinarian J.C.H.V. serves 18 years and six months in prison and is banned from working with animals for 46 years. Podemos also requests sentences of six to 13 years for other co-defendants, depend-

ing on the offence. In these cases, too, this is coupled with bans on keeping and working with animals. The members of the dog fighting gang are not only charged with organising illegal fights and belonging to a criminal organisation, but also with serious animal abuse. Podemos concluded that "From birth, puppies of potentially dangerous breeds were constantly maltreated, physically punished, inadequately fed and hard-trained to exhaustion by means and methods that promote an abnormal increase in muscle capacity and aerobic resistance, including the supply of drugs and doping substances such as Winstrol, dexamethasone, boldenone, testosterone, erythropoietin (EPO), etc." All treatments, with the exception of the veterinarian who was a member of the gang, were given by non-

qualified individuals. Incapable dogs or those which were no longer useful were killed. The presence of children, who were at least occasionally introduced into the strictly hierarchical circle by their parents, is also frightening. The Podemos representatives also called for a solution for the animal welfare organisations that have taken in confiscated fighting dogs after the raid and now do not know how to proceed with these animals. Hormiga explained "They are in a legal limbo. It is not clear who is responsible for what happens to the dogs." They also call on all Canary Island residents to report to the police if they suspect illegal dog fighting is going on in their area. With regard to the forthcoming trials against the defendants, the party hopes for precedents to be set high with strong penaln ties as a deterrent.

How does your insurance company value your car after a total loss? God forbid this should happen to you but if your vehicle is treated as a total loss (also known as a ‘write-off’) it’s because the cost for the repair is higher than 75 per cent of the actual cash value of the vehicle, or that it has sustained so much damage that it is unsafe and therefore not roadworthy. We really hope you won’t ever be involved in this situation, but it’s best to be aware of some important aspects and to be really clued-up. For example, Liberty Seguros recommends contracting thirdparty with theft, fire and total loss, because in cases where the client has third-party coverage only and an accident is

compensate the total loss with the sale value of the vehicle but bear in mind that after three years of your car’s life, depending on the car, it may have depreciated by up to 50 per cent or more, so your compensation won’t be that good! On the other hand, choosing

the right insurer can make a big difference. In the case of Liberty Seguros, within the first two years after buying your new vehicle, you will be compensated with the value of your car as if it was new. From that point on: If the vehicle is up to three years old: you will be compensated with 80 per cent of the value of your car when it was new. If the vehicle is up to four years old: you will be compensated with 70 per cent of the value of your car when it was new. If the vehicle is more than four years old: you will be compensated with the cash value of your car, plus 30 per cent. What’s more, in the case of total loss, Liberty Seguros does not deduct any type of excess.

La Orotava Corpus Christi 2018

Sand touches an open nerve One of the most iconic events of the fiestas’ calendar is about to take place in the historic old town of La Orotava. Associations, groups, friends and neighbours are gearing up for one of its most famous and most loved festivities - the preparations for the famous Corpus Christi festivities are in full swing. The main showpiece, a worldfamous jewel, a giant sand carpet which has even found its way into the Guinness Book of Records, covers the entire square in front of the town hall, is in the making. This year, it was designed by the Artearena collective using natural sand from Teide National Park. The predominant colours this year are green, black and cream, and to a lesser extent red, brown and purple. The carpet this year has as its motto 'The Young' and has a social significance. The message it aims to spread is not only addressed to young people, but to society as a whole. Attention is being drawn

to the fate of refugees and immigrants and to the issues of abuse and violence against women. Those responsible for this amazing piece of ephemeral art say "With this carpet we want to contribute images that remind observers of their task of helping and defending the needy. The focus is on equality and respect for everyone - no people without homes, without food, suffering or afraid. Together we can make this world a better place where we can live in peace and harmony."

His courage was evident on many occasions and his body was scarred from head to foot with the tell-tale signs of close encounters. His gallantry in battle and skill as an officer was often remarked upon and he is known to have fought in many campaigns in different countries. He served in the British Indian Army and was seconded to assist the Ottoman forces in the Crimea. On November 5, 1854 Major Leveson took part in the Battle of Inkerman. This has often been referred to as ‘The Soldiers’ Battle’ because troops had to fight mostly on

But, above everything, Henry Leveson was an adventurer and a big game hunter. In Four Fathers of Big Game Hunting - Biographical Sketches of the Sporting Lives of William Cotton Oswell, Henry Astbury Leveson, Samuel White Baker and Roualeyn George Gordon Cumming, by T.R Thormanby, he is one of the big names in the ‘sport’. However, there was much more to him than soldiering and shooting. He was a cultured man. On his travels he sketched and wrote books and stories, but his drawings often betrayed a certain amount of imagination, perhaps as he was accustomed to wilder forms of adventure. Indeed he was known to have painted somewhat surprising images,

About the Author

John Reid Young is a very talented writer whose family has been connected with the Canaries for many decades and he drew on personal experience and legendary family stories to tell some marvellous tales which interest, intrigue and entertain. In 2012, he published a fabulous collection of some of those stories in The Skipping Verger And Other Tales. Its popularity, especially with those with a soft spot for Tenerife as it was a few years ago, gave birth to a new collection, A Shark In The Bath And Other Stories. What would you do if you found a shark in a hotel bath? “The hotel manager was horrified. Well, he would be, wouldn’t he? There’s a shark in a guest’s bath. How did it get there? Only I, the author, knows....and I can tell you I was in a heap of trouble!” Hotel sharks aren’t the only surprise in this charming collection of short stories set in Spain’s Canary Islands: There’s a desperate race against time to arrest one of the Great Train Robbers when he flees to Tenerife; A British revolutionary gets caught up in the illegal transport of human cargo during the dark days of General Franco; A young American is shocked when he finds out why island villagers are convinced he’s a ghost and when a pirate’s chest was discovered in a cave near a waterfall, nobody could have expected what lay within. In these, and other fascinating stories, you’ll encounter a host of captivating characters, some of whom have left their mark in the history of these beautiful Atlantic islands, and you’ll discover that this unique archipelago off the African coast is so much more than just a modernday tourist destination. exaggerating already spectacular natural scenery. In 1867 he broke his journey to the African continent for a second time on the Canary Island of Tenerife. He was tempted to sketch some of the magnificent scenery and his drawing of Mount Teide, for example, published in The Illustrated London News, was quite different and less accurate than any produced by his contemporary travelling artists. He gave the volcano a sharp pointed peak when it has a rounded crater at the top. The drawing depicts the charm of the nineteenth-century island, with a goatherd attending his flock and an ox-drawn cart about to cross a romantic, ancient bridge. This sketch with mountains in the background and in the distance beyond the volcano, suggest that Major Leveson was prone to use his artistic imagination for effect. Rudyard Kipling in his last book, Something of Myself and Other Autobiographical Writings, referred to Major H. A. Leveson as having published a number of stories of hunting and adventure under the pseudonym of The Old Shekarry. Under the same name Henry Leveson also published

a book called The Forest and the Field. In its introduction, his 19th century sense of soldiery, adventure and romanticism flows, describing his life as “inseparable from fatigue, privation, hardship and danger” but “full of fascinating excitement” and possessing “irresistible charms that amply compensate for the loss of more refined pleasures and luxuries of civilised life”. It’s evident that he was quite taken with Tenerife because in the same book of stories he dedicates a chapter to the island. He also betrayed a debonair and swashbuckling attitude. It was during his second visit that he even had time to become a member of the Casino close to where he took a room in Santa Cruz and he recommended the cigars purchased at Mr Belloso’s store in Calle Castillo. He had an eye for women too and observed “the ladies are elegant and piquant as any in Spain”. In spite of his reputation as a big game hunter, which would be frowned upon today, his stories also suggest a man with a tender feeling for the natural world when it didn’t imply the excitement of an encounter with a dangerous, wild animal. In Tenerife he referred to

Like others before him, especially a man considered to be possibly the greatest naturalist in history, Alexander von Humboldt, Major Henry Astbury Leveson was enthralled by what he witnessed. He wrote “I have gazed upon many of Nature’s most gorgeous pictures in different parts of the world but never beheld anything more transcendently beautiful than sunset from the highest summit of the Peak of Tenerife”. While it was more scientific writers who persuaded the first winter visitors to begin sailing for Tenerife, especially to the Orotava Valley in the late 1800s, there is no doubt that adventurous travellers like Major Leveson considerably helped fascinate those early Victorian tourists. The Old Shekarry was 38 when he climbed Mount Teide. He died only ten years later in England, never recovering properly from old bullet wounds which had weakened n him over the years.

Waste water treatment and disposal

A representative of the Spanish central government recently had to appear before the European Court in Luxembourg in response to a complaint filed in 2011 regarding insufficiently treated sewage water being pumped into the sea off the nation’s coasts. Data gathered during 2007 showed 37 plants which were not meeting EU standards at the time, leading to the incitements four years later. Thirty of these situations have since been resolved via the updating or installation of correct treatment and disposal methods, but seven are still not complying, including Valle de Güímar – the only one in the Canary Islands. The Güímar plant takes wastewater from the surrounding borough plus Arafo and Candelaria, but the waste needs to be subjected to much more vigorous treatment before being emptied into the sea. The island councillor responsible for water, Manuel Martínez, is expecting a heavy fine as a consequence of the previous lackadaisical attitude. However, as he explained, "Really, sanitation is a community issue. In the case of Güimar, I learned of the situation when I took office in 2015. A completed project, some two decades old, had never been put into operation. That's why the Island Council took the reins and looked for solutions. In October last year we started to build a modern sewage plant in Güímar and to finance it from the Island

est situations are now being dealt with. For instance, Gáldar on the northwest coast of Gran Canaria can finally see an end in sight to their 30 year dilemma thanks to a pioneering project. Island Councillor Miguel Hidalgo recently presented an improved treatment plan that will hopefully ensure the reopening of the Bocabarranco bay to bathers. Though the problem was first noted three decades ago, various possible solutions have had to be ruled

Council budget. However, it’s expected to take 24 months to build. This means the problem will not be solved for another year and a half." That will be six months over the time limit, and punishment will be imposed by the EU Court of Justice according to a formula worked out on the number of inhabitants and days that have elapsed since the complaint was filed, until resolution. In the case of Güímar, this is expected to be around €1,395 a day, meaning it could reach at least €753,300 before the

expected completion date of the plant. Who will pay this amount, is a further issue. Martínez assumes it will be handled by the State Foreign Office and that the Island Council is in no way responsible. At the same time, he warned that this procedure is only one of many possible cases. After evaluating data from the latest hydrological plan for Tenerife, of the 65 urban centres on the island, only 34 currently meet European standards. Urging the authorities to act, he said "since the data is only passed

on periodically, it is possible that further penalties will be imposed."

Innovative solutions Of course, the question of what to do with the humungous amounts of sewage and waste water produced across the islands is neither simple nor inexpensive to solve. However, some of the tricki-

out due to the coastline in the area being particularly rocky and, importantly, subjected to strong tides. However, following the example of Vigo and San Sebastián in northern Spain, Gáldar’s latest project consists of a 455 metre long tunnel being built under the sea, taking the waste far away from shore. The budget of €5.8 million will be equally financed by the Island Council and Canary Islands Government. After approval, a construction phase of around 27 months has been calculated. The first section of the proposal begins ashore, at the Agua del Mar facilities in Bocabarranco and Agragua. Both drains are to be brought together in a

222-metre long pipe and fed into a collecting basin. There the most difficult underground part of the operation begins. A tunnel along the steep coast and into the sea will be dug with machines that simultaneously drill through rock and lay a concrete pipe with a diameter of around two metres, making progress of around ten metres a day. With a cost of €3.2 million, this part devours the largest amount of the budget. In the last stage, pipes will be anchored to the seabed in the traditional way, with the help of a crane and divers. The wastewater will then be discharged from 15 nozzles into the ocean at a depth of 15 metres and more than 700 metres from the coast. Further improvements are also to be implemented in the near future. With an investment of more than €10 million, the treatment plant, into which most of the wastewater from the communities of Gáldar and Guía flows together, is to be expanded. It dates back to the 1980s and its capacity no longer meets present needs. The volume of wastewater is to be significantly increased, from the current 3,000, to 5,000 cubic metres. The waste will also be better treated and a special tank with a capacity of 6,000 cubic metres will be connected for the first time, which can absorb peaks such as those that occur during storms. In addition, the wastewater treatment plant in Bocabarranco is to be supplied with 380 photovoltaic panels and the desalination plant is to be supported by wind power. Thanks to these renewable energy projects, carbon dioxide emission will be reduced by around 17,400 tons, imports of petroleum will be reduced by 4,700 tons, and around €2 million can be saved every year.

Personal responsibility Although many choose to believe that sewage disposal is always someone else’s problem, Puerto de La Cruz council recently sent out a clear message when it comes to what should – and shouldn’t – be flushed down toilets, as well as the fact that we all have a role to play, whether we like it or not.

Afonso, mayor of Puerto de La Cruz, recently joined Aqualia's Director of Public Water Treatment, Emilio Fernández, in a graphic demonstration showing how normal toilet paper dissolves in a glass of water but wet wipes remain intact and unchanged. They and other personal hygiene articles that are carelessly disposed of down the toilet have a horrific impact on waste water

As in the previous year, an information campaign therefore calls for more responsible action from all citizens, in conjunction with moves taken by the authorities. Between March and the beginning of April, Aqualia invested almost €20,000 in improvements to the sewage system, including the replacement of a damaged roof on a pre-treatment room with a new twin-wall sheet, and odour nuisance caused by hydrogen sulphide being minimised by the injection of ozone, produced in the plant itself for disinfection. Now it is up to the residents and visitors to play their part in ensuring the optimal functioning of the plant and the entire pumping system. n Hygiene products inappropriately flushed away clog up the sewage network

Pizza Gran Canaria with chorizo

Spain's best pizza is in Teror At the beginning of May, the Mayor of Teror, José Luis Báez, welcomed the Tavani family of pizza bakers, who took first place in the Spanish Pizza Championships and 13th place in the World Championships in Parma, Italy in April. Less disposable plastic at Loro Parque Even those who go shopping with the best resolutions usually come back with lots of plastic packaging. Some things cannot be replaced or the consumer has to dig deeper into his pocket. For example, loose vegetables and fruit are often more expensive than the same product pre-packed in plastic, or organic products that are sold in plastic bags. It’s a paradoxical shopping world. What about the popular takeaway coffee? The cup is also usually made of plastic and is tossed into the rubbish bin after use. But there is another way. At Loro Parque, on the occasion of International Earth Day, it was announced that the use of disposable plastic material at the facility would be reduced by 80 per cent. A hot coffee can also be served in a cardboard coffee cup. The reason given was that they wanted to do everything possible to counteract the plastic waste mountains in nature. An estimated eight to 13 million tons of plastic have accumulated in the world’s oceans. This is 800 times the weight of the Eiffel Tower or 34 times the area of Manhattan. Environmentalists fear that by the year 2050 there could be more plastic in the oceans than fish. That should be reason enough to act, and to question your own behaviour with every purchase and consumption. n

Promo | Cabrera Rodríguez Lawyers and tax advisors

To give or not to give, that is the question By Octavio Cabrera Director, Cabrera Rodríguez Lawyers and tax advisers What parents, whether they’re business people or simply custodians of a family’s wealth, haven’t at some time or other thought about the advisability of transferring part of that wealth during their lives to their children or other relatives? This thought most often begins not with the size or dimensions of the property owned, but above all, with the moment that the working generation begins to look towards the sometimes unwelcome but often longed for horizon of their retirement. It’s during the pre-retirement years when we begin to think about everything to do with our succession, inheritance and property planning. Sometimes that moment is brought forward, when more mature new parents celebrate a birth and begin to concern themselves with ensuring their own wellbeing and that of their children, who are still too young, and who will still need support for a good number of years. This

period of time may on occasion exceed the ‘useful lifetime’ of the progenitor. On many occasions, it all begins with the unfortunately sudden and imperious necessity that we feel one day of making a will, after having ignored the matter or put it aside for too long. Once those first dilemmas are resolved and once we have decided what it is that we want to do, we go on to the second phase - how to do it and how much it will cost. Immediately, or if not almost immediately, further doubts arise. What should we do from now on? Do we give up power completely, or should we maintain control and hand it over gradually? This entire process, which is unique to each family, and that I generally call ‘the family succession policy’, is individual and personalised for each group and thus needs personalised advice. Each family’s decisions must without a doubt necessarily be based on the trust and common sense of the generation in charge and on the respect, commitment

Summer

and involvement of the following generation. All of this will have to be seasoned with the necessary dose of complicity and loyalty between both generations, the real thermometer of the ongoing success of the family business/properties, and its survival and improvement generation after generation. Having said all this and concentrating on the concrete aspect of the tax implications, the usual subject of our section, let us analyse the implications of those possible gifts to our children or other relatives. The first reflection is that you should never forget that unless our gift is of money, the tax aspect of any gift has two sides to it. The good side is the Gift Tax borne by the recipient which, it so happens, has been covered by an allowance in several Spanish Regions, to the extent that it has practically been eliminated as long as certain requirements of linkage to the Region and degree of kinship are satisfied. The bad side, often forgotten and the main cause of regret

in the formalisation of gifts to children, is none other than what is payable in Income Tax by the giver, thanks to a difference between the market value of the gift and its acquisition cost. There have been too many common situations, where the ignorance of some ‘professionals’ and the anxiety generated in the potential giver to get on with the transfer, have meant that the zero windows taxation (for the beneficiary) have been missed. The end result is shattering payments for capital gains in Income Tax. The situation relating to gifts of real estate to children is typical but there are also, and perhaps more painfully, gifts of holdings in the family business, without the operation having been correctly studied and planned. The second reflection is that gifts to brothers and sisters, and nephews and nieces at the address of the beneficiary, are not allowed at least as regards our Autonomous Community. It’s especially significant that a brother or sister, or the children of such brother or sister

are excluded from benefiting when under many circumstances they are the natural heirs or successors. The rigidity of the regulation again generates a distance which is sometimes unbridgeable between the realities of the family business structure and complicates the succession process. Considering the above-mentioned limitations, do we have to renounce making gifts? Of course not! The legal framework authorises and blesses the making of certain gifts which are neutral from the taxpaying point of view. Real estate planning must be based on ensuring that there are no substantial differences between the market value and that of acquisition, or at least, the impact of the ideal capital gain on Income Tax must be quantified and the possible cost in Municipal Tax on the Increase in Value of Urban Land (the traditional ‘municipal capital gain’). A particular exception is the place of residence of the family which, although it is not exempt from municipal capital gains, except on account

of a number of generous local ordinances, does eliminate the capital gain of the transferor (not only when he gives it away but also when he transfers it for consideration), provided that a number of objective circumstances are complied with, among which is that of the donor reaching retirement age. This option is habitually articulated with the express reservation of the lifelong usufruct (right to use and/or derive profit from a property /business etc.) in favour of the donor. As far as holdings in family businesses go, the effects of Income Tax payments, in the absence of a better criteria which determines the real value of the holding, they are measured by the normal rules of Property Tax. Avoiding the reverse effect as denominated earlier involves fulfilling the Income Tax requirements so that the probable capital gain is exempt, and the muchdesired fiscal neutrality of the transaction is achieved. Medicine man

The healing plant

Marijuana has been used medicinally for thousands of years, but due to its comparatively recent classification as a controlled substance in much of the developed world, its healing properties have often been disregarded by the medical fraternity and policy makers – a situation that is now changing, however. For instance, a marijuanabased pharmaceutical medicine called Sativex was authorised for use with multiple sclerosis sufferers in the UK around eight years ago, and a further one, called Nabilone, is sometimes used to relieve sickness in people undergoing chemotherapy. In addition, there are ongoing trials around the world into its efficacy for a whole range of other conditions, such as

glaucoma, cancer pain and epilepsy. The term ‘medical marijuana’ refers to using the whole, unprocessed plant or its basic extracts for treating illness. Otherwise known as cannabis, marijuana contains a range of active ingredients called cannabinoids. Two of these, tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD), are of most interest to scientists trying to develop treatments. Those who use medical marijuana do not do it to get high – they use it for relief from pain and health conditions. Nowadays, it’s not unusual for plants to be grown with a

be better treated with a combination that includes THC, as it seems the most effective application of a natural remedy is usually to use the whole plant, not to extract one or two of the active ingredients. Interestingly, our bodies naturally produce cannabinoid chemicals, which have been

Gym, Las Chafiras, and principal director of the Massage Courses Europe organisation. Here, she shares first-hand experiences with medical marijuana as well as speaking about treatments currently available on the island. First off, she told us about Wolfgang Godke, who produces handmade cannabisbased medicines using completely natural ingredients. Wolfgang has successfully run his own farm in Arico dedicated to this practice for the last three years and has recently opened a further smallholding in Guía de Isora. “Previously trained in Chinese herbalism by an associate who runs her own private clinic in China, Wolfgang suffered from cancer in the past and says he cured himself within just four months using his own medicines. Wolfgang advised her that cannabis butter was actually a better choice to treat seizures, as it has a slower release into the body and the effects of it last much better into the next day. He also explained that the strength of cannabis butter would not be detrimental to the pharmaceutical medicines she was being prescribed by the doctor. Elaine said “Within just one month Alana's seizures were under control for the first time in six years and she is now living a much happier life. I was so impressed with how the cannabis butter helped Alana that I was happy to refer my clients to Wolfgang's products. It’s been wonderful to see so

Examples of Wolfgang’s treatments include butter and oils (either ingested or used topically) and capsules to help with conditions such as ADHD, Alzheimer’s, anorexia, arthritis, asthma, autism, Crohns, depression, diabetes, epilepsy, seizures, fibromyalgia, glaucoma, rheumatism,

A cannabis elixir, taken in drops under the tongue for immediate effect, is said to relieve muscular conditions such as fibromyalgia or twitching, as well as Parkinson’s, Tourret’s syndrome, ADHD, anorexia, anxiety, and inflammatory complaints. In addition, cannabis-based pain and healing cream, applied topically, is said to aid the healing of small wounds and carcinomas, as well as reduce inflammation of joints, migraines and provide muscular pain-relief. Vein cream is applied to the skin in the case of varicose veins and venous pain, whilst Rick Simpson oil (ingested) is used in cases of cancer, including skin cancer. The sports spray provides relief from muscle pain and tension, whilst ear drops are said to help with tinnitus, earache and problems with the sinuses. Finally, aloe vera with cannabis skin cream is recommended for burns, sunburn, wound healing, scar treatment, allergies, skin irritations, and the reduction of crow’s feet. explained to her how Wolfgang's products had helped my daughter and clients. We discussed making a documentary for facebook/youtube to give people more information on FECO (full spectrum cannabis oil) and how Wolfgang's products are made but, unfortunately, due to our busy work schedules this proved impossible. However, the positive aspect that evolved from this is that Dee's supplier is now working with Wolfgang in providing cancer patients with FECO as it’s very important to both organisations that people are receiving the correctly made medicines.” Ex-Tenerife resident Dee Mani-Mitchell made international headlines earlier this year when she revealed to the media that she had cured her breast cancer using FECO. The British mother was diagnosed with grade-three triple negative breast cancer (TNBC) on March 16, 2017. TNBC is the most aggressive type of known breast cancer, which medics believe can only be treated with a mixture of surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Dee spent five years training as a pharmacist, but after losing her sister who had undergone chemo treatments, she decided to opt out of traditional treatments in favour of a combina-

tion of medical cannabis and other natural methods. Happily, she was given the all-clear in August 2017, just four months after using FECO, claiming that her win over cancer was due to the cannabis oil she had been treating herself with. Dee's journey is detailed in a book, My Way. Following the cancer brick road, from diagnosis to all clear naturally in five months, that is available on Amazon. Elaine continued “We are so fortunate in Tenerife to have access legally to these very important medicines. Over the past three years Wolfgang has assisted many people in turning their lives around by helping them reduce or eliminate prescribed medicines such as tramadol, paracetamol, codeine, co-codamol and naproxen, and has often worked with cancer patients, many of whom put the reason for their cure down to the cannabis treatments. “All of his medicines contain the important CBD and THC, and he makes a range of them for treating different conditions, as well as providing various strengths from which to choose. And, as Dee says, it’s so important for people to be careful where you source your oil from, and unless that oil has been tested by the cor-

Animal charities’ round up

A fundraiser is being held to help pay for an operation for K9’s lovely Brenda

K9 K9 are pleased to announce that we are hosting a fundraising event on June 9, from 3pm till 6pm at Polygon Bar in Los Cristianos, near The Arona Grand Hotel. The event is to raise funds for Brenda’s operation. Our lovely dog Brenda suffered an accident while chasing after a ball, in which she fell and snapped her cruciate ligament. Although this injury does not cause her any pain, she needs an operation to repair it. Brenda (pictured here) is a lovely dog around five years old and she is up for adoption. If you would like to know more about her or meet her, don’t hesitate to come and visit! Ideally, Brenda will recover better in a foster home after her operation, so please contact us if you are interested.

In other news, K9 received a very pleasant surprise for St George’s day. We were invited to the Amarilla Golf Club for their tournament. During the afternoon, K9 president Elsie was presented with a cheque for €3,288.50 by the club members after a fantastic year of fundraising. We would like to say a massive thank you to all the members of the club, this money will go to fund flea and tick prevention for all of our dogs. It will also be used to tidy up some of the kennels. We have many dogs waiting for their forever homes. You can see them on our website at www.k9tenerife. com. Or visit the Refuge on Calle Chimbesque, between Las Chafiras and Las Zocas, any day between 10am and 2pm. Alternatively, call us on 667 638 468 or email info@ k9tenerife.com. You will also find stories of our dogs’ antics on our Facebook page at Diary of a K9 Tenerife Dogwalker or K9 Tenerife.

ADOPTION

Who can resist?

These beauties are currently at the Acción del Sol refuge getting ready for their new homes. The two males and a female will be ready for adoption as soon as they’ve had all their necessary vaccinations and been given a clean bill of health. Call Acción del Sol on 922 778 630 if you would like to meet them or any of the other cuties there waiting for you! n

Shop till you drop Visit our shop in Alcalá Plaza, every day from 10am to 2pm. Donations of quality household goods, clothes, books, shoes or other items are very welcome as well. Call 646 561 035 to arrange collection of larger items from all local areas. Proceeds from our shop are essential to ensuring our K9 dogs have everything they need to make their time at the refuge as comfortable as possible. There are always lots of bargains to be had and our volunteers will make you very welcome.

Acción del Sol The three dogs pictured here were found roaming the streets between Buzanada and Guaza, all without microchips. It makes it very difficult to reunite the dogs with their owners quickly and causes the dogs needless stress through humans’ irresponsibility. Please microchip your dog and ensure their information is updated should you change address or phone numbers. It is also a legal requirement for them to be microchipped, as well as registered at your local town hall. With more than 230 dogs looking for new loving homes please do come and visit us to see if maybe one is the dog for you. Every one of them has a full clean bill of health and is fully inoculated, micro chipped, passported and castrated, which is compulsory to try to reduce the large numbers of unwanted litters here on Tenerife. There are no adoption fees but donations are welcomed towards the rising upkeep and running costs of the refuge. Good news is that in one recent week we had many lucky dogs

adopted. Nine went to Germany, one to England, three stayed in Tenerife and three were reunited with their owners. We are very pleased that people are adopting not buying dogs. How you can help We are often asked how people can help. We need many things for the animals and refuge, such as products for our clinic and cleaning products and utensils, building mate-

rials, dog toys, leads, etc., tinned food for our elderly dogs, puppy milk, and dog jackets for when our dogs travel by flight to Germany, as well as materials to help with our educational programme (pens, paper, glue, play-doh and crayons). Every donation is greatly appreciated. In addition, we are desperately looking for people who are travelling to Hamburg, Dusseldorf, Berlin or Frankfurt who would be prepared to escort a dog. All that’s needed is a little time at the airport: all necessary paperwork and handling of the dogs is done by AccionTier staff. Please do call 922 778 630 if you can help in any way, or visit us on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday afternoons from 2pm to 5pm, and Saturdays 1pm to 4pm. We’re situated directly under the wind turbines, from exit 52 on the TF1 north bound, just after the El Médano junction. Head for the windmills on the coast and we’re located in the buildings on the right

hand side. Alternatively, email us on teneriffa@aktiontier.org or visit our Facebook page at Action tier Acción del Sol.

Cats Welfare Adoptions All of our cats go on a week’s trial in your home so you can be sure you’ve made the right decision. If you adopt two kittens together then kitten injection, micro chip and neutering is free for the second one. Adopt a black kitten or two and both will receive the above treatments for free. Contact us via our website at www.cats-welfare-tenerife.com or ring/whatsapp Sharon (English) on 662 524 006, seven days a week 9am to 6pm, or Sandra (Spanish and German) after 6pm on 671 282 773. Alternatively, message us on Facebook. Our shop Find it on San Blas in Golf del Sur (behind Hiperdino), open seven days a week, 10am until 6pm. If you don’t have transport or have large bulky items to donate you can ring Mark on: 636 590 557 to arrange collection. Or maybe you would you like to help in n the shop?

stands on bars or beams, these acrobats find themselves balancing on their team mates’ feet, hands or shoulders. This requires hard work, discipline, coordination, concentration and, above all, the total trust in their colleagues. Acro Flyers is a professional sports team based in Tenerife, and is the very first in this discipline in the Canary Islands. Its members are children over the age of five, although adults are welcome, and the team trains and practices at school facilities in the south of Tenerife, mainly in San Miguel and Granadilla. However, they would really like a base of their own and hence more independence.

The professional team has already competed in Spanish national contests, and after taking part in the Madrid Open last year they proudly returned to Tenerife with one gold, two silver and two bronze medals. Their ambition is to represent the Canaries in these championships and reach the finals. However it all costs money and the only financial support they currently have comes from members' parents. Ideally they would like to secure sponsorship or funding to ensure that their dream can become a reality. Would you like to collaborate? Check out their Facebook page at Acro Flyers Tenerife for more information n and contact details.

Summer dance course

Teachers Ana and Eduardo offer a wide range of different dance styles

Latin American dances like Salsa or Bachata to the classical standard dances. Stretching is also an option with effi-

cient stretching exercises to loosen tension and make the body more supple. This course was offered for the first time

last year and was a mega hit. It offers practiced dancers a contrast which can relax the body and yet is also suitable for people who have no experience in dancing and rhythm at all. It’s also a great way to meet new people in a multi-cultural and open-minded group. The course that will be offered in the summer will be determined by Ana and Eduardo, depending on the interest of the participants. All you have to do is call and register. The courses will take place on weekdays and are expected to start at 7pm. Dance teacher Ana can be reached at n 677 068 901.

Lanzarote

Diving and active sports holidays

Statistical data available to the Lanzarote Island Council from the Canary Islands Statistics Office (ISTAC) show that in 2017, over 176,000 tourists will have dived on the island at least once during their holidays. Moreover, the diving and water sports offer combined with the climate, the tranquillity and the beautiful coasts have contributed significantly to the decision of many to opt for Lanzarote as a holiday destination. Most diving holidaymakers came from Great Britain (41.8 per cent), Germany (11 per cent), Spain (8.7 per cent) and France and Ireland (both 7.9 per cent). It should be emphasised that diving holidaymakers generally have a higher monthly income than others, which is reflected in their above-average expenditure of over €135 per day. Their average island stay is around eight to nine days. Like many other holidaymakers, they prefer the all-inclusive package with flight, hotel and meals included. Most of them stated on departure that they would take “good and very good” impressions home with them. T h e r e a r e c u rrently 35 authorised diving schools in Lanzarote and their number has almost doubled in the last four years. Swimming

Candelaria summer course

Registration for the summer swimming course in Candelaria for children between three and 14 opened on May 21. If there are any places left, the list will be widened to the surrounding communities from June 4. This cathedral town is by no means the only community that ensures that children are busy during the summer holidays and, above all, that they learn to swim early. Under the motto ‘No child who cannot swim’, courses are offered in almost all the boroughs that have a public swimming pool. The best place to ask is your own area. In addition to beginner’s courses for learning to swim, advanced courses are offered for older children in which they can try out, or perfect, other swimming styles. Above all, however, the main thing in summer is n to have fun and be safe in the sun and the water.

Aikido and iaido

A British woman recently became the first female in the Canary Islands to achieve a black belt in the Japanese martial art of aikido. The lady in question, Lynn Amass Hardy, has lived on Tenerife with her husband and two sons for the last couple of decades. She began practicing aikido, as well as iaido (another Japanese martial art), six years ago, at the tender age of 44. She has since earned a 1st Dan black belt in both of them thanks to her unwavering determination and sheer love of the disciplines. A well known painter and sculptor, when Lynn first attended the classes she found they offered more than just physical fitness and a way to keep her mind healthy and focussed, they also, she says, allowed her to “explore creative processes”, and have had a profound effect on every aspect of her life. Aikido (the way of harmony) is about absorbing an attacker’s energy and redirecting their aggression so it’s reflected back at them. Aikido techniques are, according to Lynn, “highly efficient, as they don’t rely on brute strength to overcome an adversary, but rather geometry and fluid movements, almost like a dance”. It is, she says, a great martial art for women because a person can defend themselves without the need for being incred-

she’s met amazing people and made many supportive friends over the last six years.

In July 2017, Sensei Pedro Lara asked Lynn if she would like to teach aikido and iaido under his supervision, and her answer wasn’t long in coming. “I leapt at the opportunity and will always be thankful to him for it”, she says with a smile. Pedro Lara and his brother Sensei Antonio Lara practice and teach a style of aikido from a Japanese school called Ryoshinkai, which has a long history of excellence in aikido and iaido. Naturally, this is the method that Lynn now teaches and she’s hoping to carry on the school’s legacy under the guidance of the brothers. Lynn gives classes in aikido and iaido to both adults and children on Tuesdays and Thursdays between 8pm and 9.30pm at the Takayama Dojo in Calle Tacande, La Rosa, in Las Galletas. Anyone is welcome to join in, for just €35 per month, or even go along to watch during a lesson to see if it’s something they would like to try. Contact her on 664 04 64 89. The same Dojo also hosts Karate classes every day of the week. Run by Sensei Antonio J. Álvarez Aspera (2nd Dan), the children’s classes are held between 6pm and 7pm, whilst adult classes are from 8pm to 10pm. Call Álvarez directly on 639 181 556 for more n information.

Meanwhile, practitioners of iaido (the way of the sword), learn sequences of movements, called katas, used by Japanese Samurai against their opponents. Thankfully, Lynn states that: “Of course, we can’t go around cutting people down, so we train in the moves and cuts with an enemy created by our own imagination. When I practice iaido I feel as though I’m in my painting studio creating a world of my own, but because I’m holding a potentially dangerous weapon I have to consider every move and breath, it requires an enormous amount of concentration”. seemingly effortless, but the discipline is much harder work than may be thought. Lynn says she’s found it “uses every muscle in the body, even ones you didn’t know existed!” She went on to explain that she thinks “iaido is a perfect martial art for the mature beginner because everyone can develop at their own pace, unlike others where you have to keep up with your opponent.

Whenever I’ve had a trying day I go into the dojo (a martial arts school) feeling tired, but come out feeling relaxed and revived. I’m always amazed at this”. Tenerife finishing the season with pride considering the prize at stake, a cool €80-odd million from television money next season in La Liga. Perhaps they were preparing themselves for the play-offs, but let us not take anything away from the blanquiazules on the night as they held on to record a fine victory.

to the visitors, who knew a win would close the gap on the top two for a place in next season’s La Liga. On the 20th minute, Sporting almost took the lead but a fine double save by Dani denied them. ager to remain but the board are concerned about the recent drop in form after the initial tremendous run of results when Tenerife won seven out of nine matches. The game was an open affair heading into the closing stages. A draw was no good for Sporting Gijon, and Tenerife, playing in front of their home support with nothing to lose, also attacked with purpose. On 82 minutes an error by Sporting defender Calavera let in substitute Malbasic who calmly placed the ball underneath the keeper to give Tenerife the lead. The visitors’ heads dropped at this stage, which was quite surprising

The yellow masses of Cadiz fans in the Carranza stadium were expecting a victory to guarantee their place in the play-offs but they came up against a spirited Tenerife side. Matches between the two teams are usually tight affairs; the result in Santa Cruz back in December was 1-1. Cadiz were looking for revenge for last year’s play-off defeat whilst Tenerife were playing for pride more than anything, although they did still have a very slim chance of making the top six themselves. For that to happen they would have needed to win in Cadiz and rely on another five results going their way. The first half was edgy, with Cadiz nervous and an inspired Luis Milla, the diminutive young Tenerife midfielder, showing his class. We really have something to look forward to next season with the skilful Milla and the robust Alberto controlling the centre of the park. The halftime whistle blew and incredibly all the other results were going the blanquiazules’ way, just one goal to Tenerife (and victory) would have given them a chance going into the last day of the season. But as the half continued, results changed and when Cadiz took the lead on 61 minutes Tenerife were just

playing for satisfaction. They fought on and their endeavours were rewarded on 92 minutes when Malbasic struck a sweet shot from outside the area to equalise. The 1-1 draw dented the Cadiz promotion dream as others around them won. The last day of the campaign in the Spanish 2nd division will be a passionate affair at the top, and especially at the bottom, of the league, with no more than six teams involved in the relegation fight. One of the teams is Albacete which is CD Tenerife’s rival at the next match in the Heliodoro Stadium. All match tickets on the day are set at €9 in honour of Rommel Fernandez who played for both Tenerife and Albacete.

Tenerife fans voted best of league The Spanish Football League presented the plaque for the best supporters in the 2nd division before the recent match against Sporting Gijon. The award is given to fans who have over the season “showed loyal support, respected their rivals and shown good behaviour inside and outside the stadium”. With one home game left the average attendance this season stood at 12.257, the sixth highest in the category, and that was despite failing to make it into the top six play-off places at any time. In a strange twist, after the award winners were already decided, CD Tenerife played a fiery controversial game against Huesca in April that ended in the match being suspended for 20 minutes when an official was hit by a coin. The club have a stand closure ‘pending’ for next season but they hope to escape n with just a fine.
