Active tourism winner A small Tinerfeñan company has swept aside much larger fish to take one of the biggest awards in the national tourism arena.

El Cardón is based in northwest Tenerife but works all over the Canaries and especially in Tenerife itself. They are known for fomenting active tourism with a sustainable edge and trying to boost the local economies of the areas they are active in at the same time.

It’s an operational method that has seen them climb to success time and again, to the extent that their company is included alongside huge tourism draws such as Loro Parque in a book published by the Universities of Las Palmas and La Laguna, which is now used as a text book in tourism schools nationally and internationally.

Co-housing: ageing together happily As we get older, future prospects can play on some people’s minds, especially those who live abroad, perhaps have no children or are far away from them, and have always led an independent life.

Some are horrified at the thought of one day being alone or no longer being able to live independently and having to go into a home. This is a fear that many people have, and to which there has been an answer in Denmark since 1964: co-housing. This means that people live in communal facilities which are run across generations or as senior citizens’ housing models, and which are based on sustainability principles.

Successful housing schemes of this kind are also available in Germany and are now being introduced into the Canary Islands and Spain. The principle was recently explained by architect Cristina

In the Catalonian capital there are currently two completed projects of this kind and five in the development phase. However, for the last couple of years, two ini-

tiatives have been on the go for senior housing projects in Gran Canaria and Tenerife. Teresa is co-initiator of said Tinerpen initiative and has been heavily involved in the founding of the Canaries co-housing association. “I am a retired psychologist, have two grown children and grandchildren and have experienced for myself what it means to have an older family member to look after.

I don’t want to expect my children to do that. But above all, I am an emancipated woman who has led a self-determined life. It would kill me if someone told me when I had to get up and take a shower just because I was too old to live alone”. Together with her husband, she wants to push the project forward in Tenerife and even move in herself.

INDEPENDENT IDEALS Continued from front page There are now about 40 members, with numbers rising, who are committed to the concept and who already undertake joint activities. “We would like to get to know each other beforehand and minimise the potential for conflicts in advance,” she explains. The aim of this co-housing initiative is to set up a project consisting of around 30 to 40 apartments of 60 to 70 square metres each, so everyone has their own area in which they can have privacy. At the same time, however, there are common rooms for cooking, washing, get-togethers or even for visitors. Cars and electrical appliances can also be purchased and maintained together. She added, “We want an inclusive community. This means that every individual, regardless of origin, status or religion, is equal and welcome.

We are already multicultural and have local members as well as Germans, Britons and an Iranian. We are open to all.

The altruistic idea is important to us and this includes community work, for example. Many of us are volunteers. Within our community we want to be active, cheerful and grow older together, to support each other, to experience things together and to help each other, to lead a free and independent life regardless of our age or to comfort each other when a life partner dies”. In addition, services which are supplied from the outside can be financed together, such as nursing, gardening or a caretaker for the community.

What does this mean in concrete terms?

“We have already worked out the philosophy behind the project but the practical implementation also depends on local conditions, and we can only determine this once we have found a plot of land. We are looking for land or a house that can be converted that is located in a city which offers cultural life and is in a mild climate zone. A connection to local life should be possible. We also want to be an open house for our neighbours.

Awarding hiking Continued from front page This latest recognition from the International Madrid Tourism Fair (Fitur) and the magazine Aire Libre, is far from the first, and for Company Director Valerio del Rosario Martín their most important ‘prize’ is the pleasure their clients get from their services.

However, it is the biggest official award they have received so far and it will be presented during Fitur which begins as this paper hits the streets. The award, one of four given for the best outdoor tourism activity, is for their latest project which has been well over two years in development and has already received two other prizes.

We caught up with Valerio for more information just before he set off for Fitur to present his company and in particular this project to the specialists from around the world who attend the fair every year.

“We recently spoke to the mayor of Puerto de La Cruz, Lope Afonso, and he was very impressed with our idea. For the communities it would help us if the Island Council would officially support the concept.

This would make it easier, for example, to develop rural areas for a social purpose. In other projects in Barcelona, for example, the city council provided a plot of land for a housing project and in return made it a condition that ten people would be admitted through the city’s social welfare office. “That wouldn’t be a problem for us. We could also imagine providing an apartment for single parents or for parents with a disabled child.

We very much hope for political support to speed up our project. As soon as a property is found, a cooperative will be founded which will acquire it jointly. Then we have architects on hand who are familiar with housing and they will design the building with us. It is to be financed via an ethics bank, which usually support such projects. This means that each resident pays a contribution to cover the monthly mortgage and the costs of the community. How much this will be

also depends on the final costs.

For example, if you have an apartment of 60 square metres worth around €130,000, an individual would expect to pay around €700 and €500 per person for a couple. The apartment is inheritable. The heir can then use it himself or sell it to the collective. This project is based on solidarity and above all it is not speculative. This means that it cannot be sold at too high a price and cannot be re-let at a rent that exceeds our rate. Solidarity and a sense of community are paramount.

That’s why apartments are to be planned that can be occupied by people admitted via the social welfare office in the respective city, and we want active exchange with the neighbourhood”, Teresa continued.

tion are travelling together to promote the project in various places, in fact it was recently presented at the University of La Laguna. The community sees itself as a charitable, friendly, altruistic and cosmopolitan alternative that makes it possible to grow old with individual dignity. Until the end, the members want to be active, and keep learning and participating in society.

Said to be the “definitive experience of hiking in Tenerife”, the project encompasses modules of seeing the island in various forms via a self-guided route which has been meticulously researched. It will kick off in February with hiking routes, to be shortly followed by trail-running and thereafter by options for cyclists. The routes take in some of the most emblematic landscapes of the island, from Punta del Teno to the faro in Anaga via Teide, covering some of the most characteristic Tinerfeñan scenery: laurisilva forests, volcanoes, pine forests, unique coastal landscapes and high altitude vistas. This is reflected in the ‘symbols’ that the clients are encouraged to photograph and share in social media. The cheeses of Teno Alto, the almonds of Santiago del Teide, the Pine forests of the Corona Forestal, El Teide, the wines of Tenerife in La Esperanza and the laurisilva of Anaga.

Aimed at the fit and not faint-hearted, and only for the over 16s, there are two options, medium difficulty and hard, and you can choose to do the whole route in one blitz or in stages. Cut into approximately 25 kilometre bites, it will take from six days upwards depending on the fitness of the group. Or you can do it in slices of a couple of days at a time, staged over a weekend to serve residents as well as tourists. If you wish, you can contract a guide, but the instructions are exquisitely clear and marked out in infinite detail. In addition, as the security of the clients is paramount, each participant is fully insured and will be given a GPS location gadget which is also equipped with a signal device in case of emergencies. As the routes run through areas that are mainly off the beaten track, accommodation is in the main in albergues, hostels, and mountain refuges etc., but the locations in non-tourist areas mean that you need to book early if you wish to make modifications.

Breakfast and some picnics/meals are included, others are of free choice in various out of the way villages. Your luggage will be shipped from starting point to finishing point every day for you and there is a 24 hour telephone support line if needed. Now that the city of Puerto de La Cruz has recovered on the national travel market and can look back on positive developments, the council's tourism office, headed by Dimple Melwani, wants to open up new market niches.

Together with Mayor Lope Afonso, she recently presented the latest initiative, which will be presented at the Fitur travel fair in Madrid. The slogan is Puerto de La Cruz Love, and

it means that the number of romantic trips to Puerto de La Cruz is to be increased. Couples will be able to get married in the city and also spend their honeymoon in the northern metropolis. More than ten hotels in the four and five star range, have suitable premises, suites and a romantic ambience. Three of them have been awarded the TUI Holly 2019 and the five-star luxury Hotel Botánico has even been voted

one of the 100 best hotels in the world.

Comfort and beauty for outside settings, plus the sea, palm trees, oceans of flowers and warm temperatures, provide the perfect composition for a dream wedding. Currently around 90 marriages are solemnised each year in the Puerto de La Cruz town hall, and most of the couples who say yes in the city live in the Canary Islands. Although

the number has doubled in the last four years, the aim of the area’s tourism office is for the current figure to double in the next three years to 2022 and for around ten per cent of them to be residents from the Peninsula travelling specifically for this purpose.

FRAUDULENT CAVALIER

Love swindler gained €9,000 In the second week of January, Guardia Civil officers arrested a 23-year-old man at Morro Jable in Fuerteventura.

He had a previous criminal record and is suspected of having cheated on two women from Tenerife through ‘love fraud’ thus gaining €9,000. The fraudulent gentleman did the same in both cases. First he con-

tacted the victims via social networks such as Instagram and Badoo. He pretended to live in Fuerteventura for professional reasons and to have come from a rich family who allegedly lived in the Balearic Islands. After he had gained the trust of the women, he suggested a meeting. He visited one woman in Tenerife, and the

other flew to Fuerteventura, thus strengthening the relationships even more. After the personal meetings, he began to ask the women for money. In doing so, he gave various flimsy reasons including family shortages, a robbery or loss of his wallet. He had the money transferred to his friends' bank accounts.

After several such transfers

had been made, with which he gained a total of €9,000, the two women became suspicious. Both refused to make further payments, whereupon the contact broke off immediately. As a result, they both filed a complaint last November. On the basis of their description it was possible for the police to identify and arrest the perpetrator. n

ENDEMIC PLANT SPECIES RECOVERED

Environmental commitment in La Palma For about nine years now, the Environmental Protection Agency in La Palma has been working to recover two endemic botanic species that only exist on the island and were severely threatened with extinction.

These are the Firebill (Lotus pyranthus) and the Fire Horn Clover (Lotus eremiticus). Recently, Councillor for the Environment Juan Manuel González was able to announce that they had succeeded in spreading the plants further and regenerating the population. In April

last year, a first example was discovered in a fenced experimental field at Lomo de la

Monja near Santa Cruz de La Palma, and in November the fire horn clover bloomed again in Roque de la Viña and Villa de Garafía. The ambitious project began in 2009 when protected areas were established in which around 1,500 specimens of both species were sown and planted. The first

examples of these successes are now visible. "The result gives us hope that we can recover this species and that it will be able to spread naturally if we eliminate the primary threat to it," explained biologist Félix Manuel Medina, who is responsible for the project. The dangers are predators such as goats, sheep or rabbits.

The pretty plants are ground cover specimens that delight the eye with their bright red flowers and at the same time protect the soil from erosion and dehydration. n

Guardia Civil officers have caught ten men who were in the process of fishing illegally whilst apnea diving.

They were found at locations such as on the coast of Los Silos at Punta de Illegal squid captured by an Teno in Buenavista, Playa apnea diver de Apio in Valle Guerra and Ten kilograms of illegally Caleta de Jover in Tejina.

A total of 28 kilograms of caught fish were confiscated squid and ten kilograms of fish were confiscated.

The men have committed several minor and serious offences. Among other things, they exceeded the private quota, had no licence or caught their prey in closed seasons or protected areas.

They also ignored their own safety by not marking the place where they dived. A total of 26 different complaints were issued. Minor offences can be punished with a warning or a fine of between €60 and €300. A fine of up to €60,000 can be imposed for serious offences. The confiscated catches are given to social kitchens. n

Free smoke detectors

At the end of November, the Lanzarote Department for Security and Emergencies launched a campaign to save lives and protect homes via an initiative that installs free smoke detectors for residents over the age of 65.

“The simple smoke detector has already more than proven itself. For the most part, it prevents incidents involving smoke from going unnoticed in the kitchen. Since the end of 2015, they have installed 100 such smoke detectors, which have saved at least eight lives.

NORWEGIAN AIRLINES

Flight base to close The announcement that Norwegian Airlines will be closing its base in Tenerife, established since October 2013, initially caused consternation, but the news is not all bad.

In a move aimed at increasing profitability, the base will close in November, as will those in Gran Canaria and Palma de Mallorca. However, 93 per cent of the company’s current connections to Tenerife will be maintained.

Though the Rome-Tenerife South route will be cancelled in April and flights to Madrid will be reduced from nine to seven departures per week, Vueling and Neos will continue to provide direct flights between Rome and Tenerife, despite the downwards revision of expected growth in the Italian market from 14.2 to 9.5 per cent. The reduction of weekly flights from Tenerife North to Madrid signifies a decrease in seats for the summer of about 11,160. Nevertheless, thanks to connections by Ryanair, Iberia, Air Europa and the remaining Norwegian flights, the national market is expected to actually grow by 0.2 percentage points during that period.

Norwegian brought 503,849 passengers to Tenerife in 2018, representing an increase of more than 14 per cent over the previous year. The airline serves eight markets with connections to Tenerife: Denmark, Finland, Germany, Italy, Norway, Spain, Sweden and Great Britain. n

Fewer inhabitants in 23 boroughs The Canary Islands have gained almost 350,000 inhabitants so far this century, a demographic growth that was accelerated in the years prior to the economic crisis, and which has continued and presents great territorial differences.

Thus, the boroughs located in the south east of the capital islands and those most intensely devoted to tourism have experienced notable increases in contrast with the decline that has taken place in 23 other boroughs.

The nuclei that have lost population are, for the most part, located in the north or in rural areas, although among them is also Santa Cruz de Tenerife, which is one of the ten Spanish provincial capitals that have led a demographic involution in these almost two first decades of the twentyfirst century. This is evident in the official population figures resulting from the revision of the municipal census on January 1, 2018, published on January 2 by the National Institute of Statistics.

The boroughs that had less inhabitants at the beginning of last year than in 2001, the first year of the century, are, in addition to the capital of the province of Tenerife (which has fallen from 214,153 to 204.856 registered), Buenavista del Norte, Garachico, Los Silos, El Tanque and Vilaflor de Chasna in Tenerife, Agulo and Hermigua in La Gomera, Barlovento, Fuencaliente, Garafía, San Andrés and Sauces, Santa Cruz de La Palma, Tazacorte and Tijarafe in La Palma, Frontera in El Hierro, (although in this case the creation of the borough of El Pinar, which absorbed part of its population, must be taken into account) and Agaete, La Aldea, Artenara, Moya, Santa María de Guía, Tejeda and Valleseco in Gran Canaria.

At the other extreme, cases such as Adeje and Granadilla de Abona (Tenerife), La Oliva (Fuerteventura) or Yaiza (Lanzarote) stand out because their population volume has more than doubled in the first eighteen years of this century. n

New organ donation record of this is that the patient's chances of survival are even greater with living donors because the organ is better accepted by the recipient. The number of donations for heart failure patients, for which certain strict criteria of circulatory and respiratory arrest must be met, has increased to 18 donors. There is good news for patients waiting for a heart transplant because these operations are soon to be performed at the Dr. Negrin University Hospital in Las Palmas, Gran Canaria, starting probably in the second half of the year. Previously, these patients had to travel to the Peninsula for treatment and spend months there.

Thanks to the donors The health authorities would like to take this opportunity to thank the donors and their

families who have made themselves available in this selfless way after their death. The same goes for the more than 100 medical professionals who make these transplants possible in the Canary Islands, where the patients and their families are able to enjoy their proximity to home.

An organ donor card expresses a donor's wish but has no legal value in Spain. Anyone wishing to donate organs should first discuss this with their family members. As a rule, they are the ones who have to make this decision at an already difficult time. In addition, the Manifestación Anticipada de Voluntad (MAV), a document in which everyone can determine which organs and tissues they would like to donate in the event of death, can be obtained and signed in front of Health Department officials or a public notary. n

The Canary Islands Government concluded the year with a very positive balance sheet in the health sector.

Last year, there were organ donations from the bodies of 105 people, an increase of 13 per cent and in addition there were five living donors. Both the number of donors and the number of transplants undertaken reached a new record high in 2018 with a total of 203 organ transplants performed. Over the course of the year, 155 kidneys, 42 livers and six pancreases were transplanted, saving or prolonging the lives of 259 patients. The donor rate here is 49.5 per million inhabitants. The transplants were carried out both at the university hospitals in Tenerife and Gran Canaria. DOG FAIR WITH ADOPTION OPPORTUNITIES

Animundo 2019 in Las Palmas The Animundo fair will be celebrated for the second time in Gran Canaria on the last weekend of January.

The response last year was so good that it will be even bigger this time, in fact it is going to grow from 3,500 square metres of exhibition space to 5,700 square metres. It’s aimed at dog owners who care for the welfare of their four-legged pets.

Animal hospitals, veterinarians, dog groomers and specialised shops will be able to present themselves and the message is clear, a dog can be a great companion for a single person, for a couple or for the whole family. At this fair, 40 dogs from local shelters will also be there who are all looking for a new home. A total of four dog show runs are planned each day and should the response be as great as

last year, the animal welfare associations have left it open to organise a fifth show run too. Last year all 40 of the dogs presented finally found a home, let’s hope that will be repeated this year.

Assessment of the future owner takes place as strictly, as with every other adoption.

During the fair there will also be exhibitions and demonstrations in Agility and by the Police Squadron. For the first time, a musical entitled Mirame de frente 2 will be performed the evening before, on Friday, on the theme of the well-being of animals. Restaurants, hotels, rural hotels and other holiday providers that allow dogs will also be represented at the fair, showing how much easier it can be to plan a holiday with animals. If you bring your dog, you can also use the park or

outside dog pool with your pet, making an entertaining leisure activity for animals and their humans.

The fair takes place on Saturday, January 26 from 10.30am to 8pm, and on Sunday, January 27 from 10.30am to 6pm. Entrance costs €2.50 for humans and one euro for dogs.

There are 120,000 registered pets in Gran Canaria. Most of them are dogs, because domestic cats are not usually registered and therefore do not appear in the statistics in any real order of magnitude. At the same time, the island has one of the highest exposure rates in Europe. Eight out of ten dogs that are abandoned are not microchipped as prescribed.

Trade fairs like these offer animal shelters the chance to present their protégés to a broader audience. n

CARNIVAL WITH A TWIST

‘Los Indianos’ in La Palma This year’s poster for the Los Indianos Carnival event, which was first popularised in La Palma, was recently presented.

It was designed in watercolours by Carlos Manuel Rodríguez, a well-known illustrator and caricaturist who was born in 1969 in La Palma and is an internationally soughtafter artist. It’s a blend of comic scenes representing the colourful hustle and bustle of carnival in La Palma, and with many lovingly depicted details it reflects the essence of carnival on this small and beautiful green island. The carnival ‘Los Indianos’ is traditionally celebrated on Rose Monday. It marks the return of former emigrants from Cuba who arrived in La Palma in their white suits, with chunky cigars and Cuban members of staff.

The event is marked by people dressing in white and throwing white powder over each other. On the poster you can see a ship that is based on the steamer called Correillo de La Palma, the old postal boat. Carnival is brought to La Palma by this ship and from the air by balloon. Many small details then give every reason for a closer inspection of the poster. For example, the couple at the bow who remind us of the film Titanic, a Cuban quartet of musicians in a lifeboat, a couple with children underlining the family character of the carnival, an ambassador covered in powder, Cuban parrots as well as the figure of the Cuban Tomasa who is one of the central personalities of the carnival in La Palma. The poster will be taken by the island’s tourism department representatives to Spain’s largest travel fair, Fitur, which will be held in Madrid from January 23 to 27. The poster will be accompanied by a brochure in German, English and Spanish explaining the special features of this carnival event. n

NATIONAL POLICE AND GUARDIA CIVIL OPERATION

Dangerous criminal gang disbanded Thanks to the high level of cooperation between the National Police and the Guardia Civil in Tenerife, a criminal organisation specialising in armed robberies and drug dealing has been eliminated.

The gang was considered highly dangerous and extremely violent. Five people between the ages of 30 and 45 years, all with previous criminal records, were arrested. Four of them were remanded without a bail option. They are accused of attempted murder, membership of a criminal organisation, attempted robbery, illegal possession of weapons and forgery of documents.

The investigation began after a shooting in the Ofra district of Santa Cruz in early 2018.

The investigating National Police initially suspected that this was a settlement between different parties over drugs. In the course of the investigation it turned out that their Guar-

The group was accused of robbery and attacking drug dealers. Amongst other things, they apparently planned to rob a large warehouse in southern Tenerife. They had already purchased a car with false license plates and weapons, as well as accessories to tie up and gag the warehouse owner during the robbery. Special units and road checks were activated with

the aim of catching the suspected criminals before they could put their plan into action. Thanks to the cooperation between the two security forces, the gang was arrested

in time. They were caught in a vehicle with double license plates. The car contained a sawn-off shotgun and a pistol, both of which were loaded ready for use. n

STRANDED ADVENTURERS SAVED

Couple’s beach horror rescue

Mid-January, a young couple, a 21-year-old man from Santa Cruz and a 22-year-old Italian woman, decided to take a trip in a rubber dinghy to the Playa de la Garañona in the borough of El Sauzal.

This beach is inaccessible by land and their excursion turned into a real nightmare. High waves and a strong coastal wind made the boat capsize several times and they only reached the shore with great difficulty. They had nothing with them except a towel and the swimsuits they wore and no mobile phone with which to make an emergency call. They still hoped that the waves would calm down and they could return by dinghy, but that was far from the truth. On the contrary, the ocean became even wilder and so they decided they would have to spend the night on the beach.

The next morning the young man searched in vain for a way out by land, as the sea conditions still didn’t set fair for them to set off in the dinghy. Fortunately a Guardia Civil helicopter flew over the beach during a routine reconnaissance flight at around 11am. At first the officers thought they were being greeted when a young woman waved at them from the beach with a red towel, but when they realised that this section was inaccessible, they turned back. The young people were completely exhausted as they had neither eaten nor drunk since noon the day before. Above all, however, they were very cold.

The officers wrapped them in their own uniform jackets to warm them up and urged them to retreat back up the beach because of the rising tide.

They were transferred to a safe landing site, where the officers had asked their colleagues to have warm drinks, food and blankets ready, so the young couple were welcomed and could warm up at the base station until a family member came to collect them. They will certainly never forget that night. Fortunately, they got away safely. A good reminder to always let someone know where you are going. n

On New Year's Eve, 25-yearold Romina Celeste Núñez and her Spanish husband Raúl D.C. had an argument.

On New Year's Day he claims to have found her dead in their shared apartment in Costa Teguise. She allegedly took drugs and could have taken an over-

dose. This frightened her husband so much that he supposedly disposed of the body. That is what he is purported to have told the police when he reported his wife missing a whole week later. During the interrogation he is said to have admitted to having kept the body at home for a

few days. He allegedly said that he had tried to burn his wife's body in the garden, and when that didn't work out, he threw her brittle remains into the sea on different parts of the coast.

He apparently insisted that he “only” disposed of the body, and did not murder his wife.

The suspect's apartment has since been searched and examined carefully by forensics experts. Divers searched the coasts for any remains to find out what really happened.

In the 72 hours during which the husband was held by the police, he called on two public defenders. The first did not represent him to his satisfaction. The mother of the deceased in Paraguay, Miriam Rodríguez, cannot believe it. "Something like this does not happen to a nice girl

like my daughter. I still believe that I will get a call telling me that Romina is alive. If he has really done what they say, I can't understand it," the mother told the Diario de Avisos newspaper on the phone. The mother is taking care of Romina's four-yearold son in Paraguay. He doesn't know yet that his mother won't come back. One of Romina's sisters has travelled to Lanzarote to participate in the investigation. Miriam stressed that she had always found her sonin-law to be an attentive and loving husband. All the more incomprehensible is the macabre scenario that he has supposedly described.

In mid-January, even before the official confirmation that this could be a case of domestic violence, the Santa Cruz City Council observed a minute's silence for her and rejected any form of violence against women. n

In mid-January, a journalist from Telde in Gran Canaria, Nicolás Castellano, presented his documentary called El naufragio, 30 años de memoria sumergida (Shipwreck - 30 years of sunken memory) in the patio of the island’s government building.

Together with photographer Juan Medina, Castellano has collected shocking images of the last three decades, right from the first known shipwreck of migrants off Spanish shores, which took place on November 1, 1988 at Playa de Los Lances in Tarifa in the Peninsula, to the first on the Canary Islands, which took place in July 1999 at Playa de Las Señoras in Fuerteventura.

INTERNATIONAL WARRANT EXECUTED

A 35-year-old British man had an unwanted start to the year when he was arrested on an international warrant in the immediate vicinity of the Reina Sofía Airport in Tenerife.

Throughout the course of December, a total of ten foreign criminals wanted on international arrest warrants were detained in Spain. The arrests

A reformed Plaza for El Fraile Arona’s mayor José Julián Mena is currently working on several projects aimed at modernising the borough and improving the quality of life.

These include the latest redesign of the Plaza de la Iglesia de Santa Isabel de Portugal in the El Fraile district. “This district in particular lacks public spaces. This one is very outdated, partly dilapidated and not accessible to everyone as it is at the moment. We want the inhabitants to get more leisure value through this change” explained the mayor. He is also breaking new ground in the redevelopment of this public space. It’s not just a question of replacing broken walls and plants and building a ramp for wheelchair users, but a completely new type of covering which is a pioneer in the Canaries will be used to make the plaza more or less breathable. The innovative material is catalytic and it actively absorbs toxic and contaminating substances from the environment and transforms them so that they are no longer harmful. Only solar energy is required for this process. For the residents of the district, this means an improvement in their leisure time and quality of life. The project should be completed in around four months. n

Once he had their passwords, he linked the women's social network accounts to his own so that he could access them via his own mobile. He used this access to share intimate photos and sex videos with other women's contacts that he had secretly taken note of during their time together and used his knowledge to snub and control the women, one of whom filed a complaint because she suspected that her ex was spying on her and revealing private information about her.

The investigation revealed that there were probably other victims of this man and some have already been found. Investigators currently do not rule out finding more women who have fallen victim to the man. The suspect now has to answer for theft, abuse of public office and disclosure of secrets. n

MISFORTUNE AT SEA

Boatman missing after fire The captain of the Orca leisure boat is still missing after disappearing under strange circumstances.

The 50-year-old boat owner is a foreign resident living on Lanzarote. His girlfriend confirmed that the man set sail on his own from Rubicón harbour at 7.30am on the morning of the incident.

Around two hours later, rescue services received a call saying a fire had broke out on the boat, which was stationed about one and a half nautical miles west of the Pechiguera lighthouse.

The emergency team was able to locate the vessel and extinguish the fire, but there was no trace of the captain except his wallet, which was found floating in the water close to the boat.

Despite divers and teams on the Helimer 202 helicopter and the Al Nair sea rescue ship continuing to search, to date no further evidence has been discovered. n

Tenerife reaches final round The policy issued by the Tenerife Tourist Board for the observation of whales and dolphins has been selected by the World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO), for the final round of the organisation’s XV Awards.

Prizes are awarded to projects that encourage sustainable tourism, in the categories of public policy, enterprise and non-governmental/charity projects.

A total of 190 initiatives from 71 countries were submitted, with the Tenerife guidelines having been selected as one of the three finalists in the Public Policy and Governance category. Tenerife will compete against the Tourism and Peace programme in Colombia, and the Love San Sebastián project from the north of the Peninsula.

The guidelines to be followed by whale and dolphin excursion operators include respectful approach towards animals, minimal noise pollution, no use of disposable plastic on board, waste separation, collection of waste from the sea, use of local products, on-board environmental education and participation in research projects. Around 800,000 holidaymakers use the whale and dolphin watching service on Tenerife every year. Winners will be announced soon. n

YELLOW-EARED PARROTS PROTECTED FROM EXTINCTION

Success in species protection in Colombia Although there are more than 8,000 kilometres between the Canary Islands and Colombia, there is an important link between the country’s yelloweared parrot and the archipelago: The number of these birds, threatened with extinction, has now multiplied significantly thanks to the financial support of the Loro Parque Foundation and the direct intervention of the Vatican.

The Foundation's involvement, in close collaboration with the local ProAves Foundation in Colombia, was fundamental in ensuring that the wildlife population of this species has recovered so well today. The story of their survival began in the mid-1990s, when the Loro Parque Foundation supported the protection of the last 20 specimens in Ecuador. In 1988 they had disappeared and it was already feared that the species was completely extinct. Nevertheless, the Ognorhynchus project began that year with the aim of ensuring the survival of this species and its habitat in the Colombian Andes.

Of course, apart from the fact that it is the most recent beach zone awarded with the blue flag for its cleanliness, originally it was named after the Casa del Duque, the Castle that everyone can see from the coast line. This is a history of family values and traditions and a continuity of three generations.

Nowadays, the offspring of the García Rozas family are bringing to life the dream of their father who unfortunately was unable to materialise it due to his early death. The idea was

to renovate the centre that was built by their grandfather.

However, there is something Duke-like in this case, isn’t there? Fathers’ precepts, keeping traditions and properties.

Do you have any title?

I gained the crown of Dama Tropicana in 2017. It was a fair and quite thrilling competition during the annual International Charity Festival that is supported by the local Arona authorities and is held at the Auditorio Infanta Leonor in Los Cristianos. So the Duke-theme seems attractive to me.

Award for Gran Canaria wine

One of the best five in Spain

Every year the former sommelier of El Bulli restaurant Ferran Centelles, who has worked with the chef Ferran Adrià for more than a decade, tests over 500 Spanish wines for the British wine portal jancisrobinson. com.

Last June, at the invitation of the Vinófilos distribution company, he visited Gran Canaria and took part in a blind tasting. He was particularly impressed by the wine called Lava 2017. He gave it 17.5 out of 20 points and at the end of the year he chose it as one of the five best wines in Spain.

"The difference lies in taste and freshness, without much acidity. The wines from Gran Canaria are really different and

go very well with a good cuisine. They have a completely different style and you simply have to taste them, because such wines are hard to find in the Peninsula. The Lava especially surprised me. It smells like ash and has a very authentic profile and a very high quality," he explained.

The uniqueness of the wines from Gran Canaria comes from the volcanic soil, the vineyards at different altitudes and climates as well as the special grape varieties. This is why he found even more favourites at the blind wine tasting in early summer last year, which for him belong to the ranks of quality wines. These included the Mondalon Monte

Roca Roble and the Agala altitud 1050 from Bodega Bentayga, which received 17.5 and 17 points respectively. Among the whites he highlighted were Ikewen 2017, Agala Altitud 1318 vintage 2017 and Lava Lias 2017. And among the dessert wines Eidan Naturalmente and Los Berrazales convinced him the most.

Among the typical old Canarian grape varieties cultivated in Gran Canaria are the Listán tinto and blanco and the Malvasía grape, which is mainly cultivated for sweet wines.

"You can't compare the taste of Gran Canaria wines with that of wines from the Peninsula because they have a completely different profile, which

we're not used to," the connoisseur praised.

"The fact that one of our wines was chosen among the five best in the country in 2018 is excellent news for wine in Gran Canaria," said Miguel Hidalgo, the Island Councillor for Alimentary Sovereignty.

The award was also a pleasant surprise for the winegrowers at the beginning of the year.

Bodega Lava in Santa Brígida is a small family business run by three brothers. "We are very satisfied and grateful for this award, because it is a tribute to our many years of work, which seems to have been successful, and it helps the Gran Canaria brand," said one of the owners, Juan Manuel Martín.

At the turn of the millennium, the brothers started making wine as a hobby. After more than a decade, in 2013, the hobby became a profession and they founded the small microenterprise. They currently produce 4,000 litres of wine a year from 5,000 kilos of grapes harvested from leased vineyards or bought from farmers in Santa Brígida, San Mateo and Artenara. The main part of their production is a young red wine from the grape varieties Vijariego Negro, Tintilla, Listán Negro and Baboso Negro.

But the brothers also produce a white wine from Malvasía Volcánica and Listán Blanco and a sweet wine from Muscatel grapes. The bodega also scored well in the Island Council wine tasting with this dessert wine.

There it won the first prize in the category 'semi-dry, sweet and liqueur-like'. For the young winemakers from Santa Brígida these awards are a great start to the New Year. n

RECIPE IDEA

Baked potatoes fresh from the oven During the cooler weather it’s pleasant to eat something that is really warming. One variation would be a delicious potato au gratin with Gouda cheese that goes perfectly with a juicy steak and fresh salad.

Ingredients: 1 kilo potatoes, 500 grams sour cream, 1 mozzarella, 4 tbsp. parsley, chives, a clove of garlic and 200 grams of diced Gouda.

Preparation: Cook the potatoes in their skins. Then cut the potatoes in half and carefully hollow them out. Crush the potato and mix with sour cream, mozzarella, herbs and garlic. Season with salt and pepper. Fill the potato halves with the mixture, place the Gouda cubes on top and bake at 200 degrees for about 20 minutes. In the meantime, the salad and steak can be prepared.

Variation: If you like it a bit heartier or just want to serve the salad with the potato, you can enrich the filling with ham and tomato cubes, zucchini shavings or mushroom slices. n

One of the novelties of the new reform of the Law on Urban Leases is the length of the contracts, which have been extended for contracts signed after December 19, 2018. Prior to the reform, housing rental contracts had a minimum duration of three years, so any duration could be established but should always last a minimum of three years. Now, contracts will have a minimum duration of five years, when the letting owner is an individual,

or seven years, if it’s a company. So, if you are a tenant, you can rent the property for up to a total of five years, or seven years if you’re renting from a company or entity like a bank. If you are the owner of an apartment and you want to rent it, you have

New web resource for Brits in Spain The British embassy welcomes the Spanish government’s new web resource for UK nationals in Spain, and no doubt British citizens worried about the Brexit with its continuing uncertainty, will welcome it too.

No matter how much information we can glean from the British Embassy and Consular officials who really are working exceptionally hard to keep us informed, there is always that nagging doubt over whether the Spanish government will actually continue to accommodate us following Brexit, and on what terms. Well now we have, so to speak, got it straight from the horse’s mouth.

On January 14, the Spanish government launched a new, dedicated section on the Moncloa (Spain’s equivalent to Number 10 Downing Street) website to inform UK and Spanish citizens and businesses on how to prepare for when the UK leaves the EU. The new site, http://www. lamoncloa.gob.es/lang/en/ brexit/Paginas/index.aspx is

available in Spanish and English, and covers areas including residency, healthcare, voting rights and education.

All UK nationals in Spain are encouraged to visit the site to ensure they are prepared for EU exit.

The Spanish government message is clear: UK citizens living in Spain for more than three months must ensure they are correctly registered with Extranjería (the Central Foreigners’ Register), to obtain a registration certificate that will be useful in either a deal or nodeal scenario. In the case of an exit with an agreement, the registration certificate will allow you to exercise your rights as set out under the Withdrawal Agreement.

The website also says that in the event of an exit without an agreement, the registration certificate will allow British citizens to continue to live in Spain and obtain any new documents required by the Spanish immigration system. For further information on residency visit

The real cost of knock offs We turn away when we see someone shoplifting - nothing to do with me – but it is, because the shops put up the prices on everything to cover their shoplifting losses, so you are paying for someone else’s freebies.

In the same way, the stores and countries lose millions in revenue every year because of cheap copies of branded goods – that cost is also passed on to the consumer by the retailers and wholesalers. Most of the clients of such goods are people with low-income, but apart from the shoddy, fall-apart aspect of a lot of these items, some, such as cosmetics and perfumes, may even be dangerous to your health. And of course, forget about consumers’ rights if or when something goes wrong!

Top-blanket sales, unscrupulous bazaars or Internet and social media sites are full of ‘special offers’ on named top brands such as Adidas, Louis Vuitton, Gucci, Hugo Boss and Armani.

The counterfeit market continues to grow and reach staggering figures. Last summer, the European Community Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) announced the results of research conducted over the last five years across the European Union, focusing on the 13 sectors hardest hit by piracy: sporting goods, batteries, spirits and wine, music, cosmetics, perfumes and toiletries, jewellery and watches, toys and games, handbags and luggage, tyres, pesticides, pharmaceuticals, clothing and mobile phones. The EUIPO estimate that the falsifications take 7.4 per cent of sales from the legal market, costing 434,000 jobs and losses in the EU of 60,000 meuros due to non-payment of taxes, contributions etc. Interpol believes that worldwide, the losses are in excess of 220 billion euros.

So where do the manufacturers and the stores get this money back? They put up the rest of the prices for all of us. Something to think about when you’re tempted by those cheapo knock-off sunglasses on the beach front… n

The Canary Islands Government is planning a major data backup project on a plot of land beside the TF-2 in the El Sobradillo district of Santa Cruz, in the immediate vicinity of the two central motorways TF-1 and TF-5.

Within the next eight to ten years, a data security bunker is to be built on the government site. The bunker will secure both telecommunications and data in the event of a disaster.

The Canary Islands has already experienced a tropical storm, namely Delta in 2005, so the emergency services and the increasingly networked digitalisation in the most diverse areas are to be secured via a central office in the future. The centre will integrate a computer centre for accommodating critical services, a matrix for radio communication, a communication recording platform, an information exchange module, a multimedia crisis room, a call management platform and a command and control system.

Due to the special nature of the archipelago, a comparable security centre will be built in Gran Canaria parallel to the bunker in Tenerife. If one of the two centres should fail, one will be able to take over the task of the other. In

ject was signed in 2016 and will be implemented this year.

The two floors that will house the future Emergency and Crisis Centre have already been completed. Within the next two months, the Island Council Emergency Centre will move

into the Blue Tower, and the 1-1-2 service is expected to follow by the end of the year.

Acción del Sol Spanish Christmas came early to one little puppy after her hard start in life, when she was abandoned with her mum and seven brothers and sisters.

They arrived at the refuge only three days old with their eyes still closed. After lots of love and care from mum and the staff at Acción del Sol, they are all fit, well and ready for adoption. The little one pictured here has already been adopted by Susan Ellis who also has a gorgeous older dog called Biscuit. Biscuit is delighted to be with the puppy and now has a new lease of life in her later years. Some of the brothers and sisters are also up for adoption so please do come and visit if you are interested.

We are completely full up and reaching crisis point, with over 230 gorgeous dogs of all

shapes and sizes looking for new loving homes. We don’t charge for adoptions but donations are very welcome towards the vast running costs of the refuge. Every one of the dogs has a full clean bill of health and is fully inoculated, microchipped, heartworm- and fleafree, has a passport and is sterilised, the last one being compulsory to try to reduce the large numbers of unwanted litters here on Tenerife.

One very lucky dog called Cholo was recently returned to his owner after being missing for a decade.

On January 6 of this year, a French Bulldog was left tied outside K9’s cattery. He looked very sorry for himself, very skinny but very happy to see us. Thankfully, he had a chip so we contacted our vets for the owner’s information.

We discovered he was called Cholo and was reported stolen back in 2008. The little guy was now 12 years old! Unfortunately, the owner’s contact numbers were out of date, so we used the power of Facebook to share his story and on January 11 little Cholo was reunited with his owner. Tears flowed all round and we at K9 are so happy that he can spend his retirement with his beloved owner, who has missed him every day since he was taken.

TALISKER WHISKY ATLANTIC CHALLENGE

Dutch winner and British World Record On December 14 of last year, the 28 rowing boats that took part in the Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge set off from San Sebastián de La Gomera.

Three boats were manned by five rowers, 13 by a quartet and two by a trio. Five couples took the challenge in doubles and another five even set off alone on the great journey.

From San Sebastián de La Gomera, they crossed the Atlantic to the Nelsons Dockyard in Antigua. In between were more than 3,000 nautical miles, over which the crews suffered lack of sleep, rowing to exhaustion, plus the fight against wind and waves.

In addition to this there is the close proximity to others in the narrowest of spaces for some and the confrontation with oneself and loneliness on a vast ocean for others.

This rowing regatta is considered to be the toughest in the world.

Nevertheless, the winner this year was the Dutch Atlantic Four quartet from the Netherlands. All four, Marcel Ates, Erik Koning, David De Bruijn

and Bart Adema, are experienced rowers who have participated in numerous competitions in Europe. For instance, in 2014 they took part in the crazy river race Zhigulevskaya Krugosvetka which is a 145 km non-stop contest on the River Volga in Russia. When David and Erik were interviewed by a local Russian newspaper on their arrival, they said rather jokingly "The next adventure is across the Atlantic". At the time, they had no idea that they would actually take up the challenge, let alone win it. Yet, after 34 days, 12 hours and nine minutes, they were the first participants to reach the finish line in Antigua. They dedicated their victory to helping children with cancer. Congratulations!

be a further service for visitors to enrich their stay on the island. Many holidaymakers who choose La Gomera use their time there for hiking or cycling tours. Last year the island welcomed around 730,000 tourists. The new hiking map shows a total of 59 trails, including 18 that cross the Garajonay National Park. A further 41 paths are linear or circular, with var-

ying degrees of difficulty.

For the first time, two of the main GR-131 and GR-132 routes that cross the island are included. Hikers can find out about hotels, rural accommodation and holiday homes along the way, which can be used as destinations if they choose to cross the island.

Seven routes are designated for cyclists, covering a total of 80 kilometres, of which

the longest route from Epina to Llano de Alcalá is over 25 kilometres, and the shortest, from Juego de Bolas to the Mirador de Abrante, is only 1.7 kilometres long.

Visitors can also download a complementary app to the map which provides additional information. It indicates the nearest bus stops or warns if roads are not in good condition, such as after heavy rainfall. A communication system is also integrated, enabling hikers, for example, to report safety deficiencies or anomalies when on the move. Geolocalisation and photos make these weak points easy to find, assess and correct. “This is a further step towards greater safety and effective maintenance of these spaces,” stated Méndez. Another app, called Alert4you, will be available in February and will warn of approaching storms and bad weather. n

Two professionals train in Tenerife A pair of professional athletes, Puck Moonen and Demi de Jongg from Team Lotto Sauda, has been visiting Tenerife for a winter training session, setting up base camp at the rural hotel La Casona del Patio in Santiago del Teide.

“We chose this island because we consider this challenging landscape and warm climate to be the perfect combination to physically prepare for the cycling season ahead.

There is also a variety of routes, with different levels of difficulty, the slightly easier ones along the coast and the difficult climbs in the mountainous regions. This makes the island a perfect place for intensive winter training,” they summed up.

For ten days they trained on the largest Canary Island and drew very positive conclusions. “We were surprised by the safety and quality of the roads,” they said, admitting that in some countries, even in some Spanish cities, they feel rather insecure. The female cyclists have many fans on social networks who follow their posts. Therefore their stay is not only a confirmation of the excellent sporting conditions on the island, but at the same time an advertisement for Tenerife as a holiday destination. n

Okay, Nástic have been struggling recently at the wrong end of the table but you cannot take anything away from this dynamic blanquiazul display.

The home form has been decent but sometimes matches have been won through the individual merits of certain players or points have been gained with more heart than good play, scoring scrappy goals in the closing minutes. This latest victory was more a team effort and how the crowd enjoyed Serbian Uros Racic`s debut. How we have managed to prise him away from Valencia in the January transfer window I really do not know. We have found a gem and not since the times of Jokanovic in the 90s have we witnessed such an elegant midfielder in these parts.

Tenerife were forced into defensive changes. Hector at right back is one of the players earmarked to leave the club but his excellent performance against Nástic may change the club’s plans. If you can’t get to the stadium the game will be televised live on TV Canaria but will also be shown live on YouTube as part of a new deal to show all 2nd Division matches live with English commentary.
