SUPREME COURT RULING
Holiday Homes Act overturned One of the largest multinational platforms for holiday homes, Airbnb, last week welcomed the Spanish Supreme Court ruling overturning the Canary Islands Holiday Homes Act. According to the court, these are “the most restrictive standards in Europe with regard to holiday rentals”. The court challenged, among other things, the ban on renting rooms in tourist areas and the ban on offering individual rooms for rent. “The only plausible explanation for this is the targeted preference of the traditional overnight accommodation sector. This, however, violates free competition,” the ruling reasoned. Continued on page two

ISLAND COUNCIL VS. CANARY ISLANDS GOVERNMENT
Battle to stop the Agaete macro-port The Canary Islands Government intends to invest around €44 million in the expansion of the Agaete port in the north west of Gran Canaria, but some members of the public and the local politicians are opposing it. Via the citizens’ group Plataforma Salvar Agaete sin Macromuelle (Save Agaete from the macro port), numerous inhabitants of Agaete, sympathisers and environmentalists are opposing the construction of an even larger harbour, which would cause considerable damage to the nature reserve and destroy the idyll of the fishing village forever. The people don’t want this and are against the large-scale project, which is nevertheless being pushed forward by the Canary Islands Government.
