Prison sentence for animal abuser The number one criminal court in Santa Cruz has set a unique precedent with an important animal abuse case.

The court considered it proven that the 29-year-old former owner of a pit bull called Milagros (Miracle) acted in a particularly cruel and sadistic manner.

Sexual exploitation in the digital world According to the National Police, the distribution of images and video material with pornographic content has increased alarmingly.

What is even worse is that this visual material is often sent without the consent of the persons concerned. Only recently, the mother of an under age teenager from La Laguna filed a complaint against a classmate. The teenager, who liked the girl, persuaded her to send him a photo of herself, naked from the hips upwards, promising that he would never show it to anyone else. The girl sent the photo via Instagram using a function that makes the photo private and only visible for a few seconds. So she believed she was on the safe side. But the addressee took a screenshot of it, which he later shared with his buddies via Whatsapp. When the

student noticed that her photo was being shared among tenth grade students in her high school and their contacts via Whatsapp, she confronted the young man.

“What do you want? You sent me the photo yourself, it’s your own fault” he replied coldly. The teenager defended herself and, accompanied by her mother, filed a complaint. It was not the first time something like this had happened, and cases appear to be on the rise.

This new phenomenon of the digital age is called sextorsion.

This is sexual exploitation without physical coercion. As a rule, these pornographic photos and videos are taken without the consent of the person concerned or under the pretext that they are only for the couple and that they would never be seen by another person.

Sometimes, cash payments, more photos or even sex are demanded to prevent the distribution. Just how tragic this can be was recently demon-

strated in Madrid. A young mother of two took her own life because a sex video of her dating prior to her marriage made the rounds in the company where she worked. The

32-year-old was employed by the multinational company IVECO which has over 2,500 employees. The video spread like wildfire. Verónica was ashamed and afraid that her husband would see the video. By the middle of that week she learned about the circulation of the recording.

By the Friday it reached her husband and one day later she took her own life out of desperation.

The trade union CGT, which also includes two colleagues who knew Verónica, demands action. On the one hand, there is the company, which should have taken action from the beginning when the first employees received the video, and against those who distributed and shared the video. "It is a question of the personal responsibility of each and every individual" explained a union spokesman. He also stressed the responsibility of each individual for the content they share in their networks.

It is not acceptable to share, without questioning, text and image material that may be illegal or at least immoral. The new digital age opens up many new perspectives, but it also poses a new challenge to each individual to deal responsibly with the media. n

Crackdown on cruelty Continued from front page At the special request of the public prosecutor, he has therefore now been sentenced to one year in prison, without probation. In addition, for three years he is not allowed to keep animals or to work in a profession related to animals, and he must compensate the Valle Colino shelter, which took care of the dog, for the costs incurred as the animal needed medical care for about a month.

The extraordinary thing about this verdict is that it is not, as is usually the case with sentences of under two years, issued on probation, but his deed of animal cruelty has meant an immediate prison sentence.

The crime took place in 2012, when the 22-year-old squatter lived in an abandoned house in Santa Cruz with several pitbulls. He knew there could be fights and attacks and did nothing to prevent them. In fact, Milagros was attacked and badly injured by her fellow dogs. The owner then put the severely injured dog into a trolley-type suitcase, closed the zipper and ‘disposed’ of her at the dumpster. She couldn’t move and couldn’t breathe. The dog owes her life only to attentive neighbours who noticed that something was moving in the suitcase, called the police and cut a hole in the suitcase so that the dog could at least breathe.

Milagros, as the Pitbull bitch is now called, miraculously survived, thanks to the veterinary care she was given at the Valle Colino shelter. Now the dog lives with a new family and is finally receiving the care and security that every animal deserves.

The dog herself was also invited to the trial, which was a novelty too. The judge wanted to convince herself of the peacefulness of the Pitbull bitch. The animal was goodnatured and rather submissive, so presumably she was therefore the victim in the pack. For the judge an argument for the particularly hard judgement against the accused was that he showed no regret whatsoever and that it testified to a particular sadism and cruelty when a severely injured animal is forced into a suitcase and thus condemned to almost certain death.

The sentence is not yet final and can be appealed to the Canary Islands Supreme Court. Nevertheless, it has caused a stir because of its particular severity and the clarity with which it treats violence against animals as a criminal offence. n

On the evening of April 17 last year at 10.15pm, a report was received at the emergency call centre of a shooting in the parking lot at the language school in La Laguna.

At that same time shots were fired at the former pub owner Carlos Machín from a semi-automatic weapon. The 51-year-old man from El Hierro who lived in Tenerife, died instantly. For decades he had been a co-owner of the famous pub Kapitel and the discotheque El Palco and had been decisively involved in the reac-

tivation of the nightlife in La Laguna's district Cuadrilátero.

This past history was taken as a possible motive, although he had later retired from the nightlife scene to spend more time with his family. As an entrepreneur he was looking at projects to recycle plastics and do business with Africa, which is why he was attending the language school.

The meticulous planning of the attack, the detailed local knowledge, the exact execution with circumvention of possible surveillance cameras, the burn-

ing of the escape car to destroy possible evidence, pointed out in a first investigation approach that it could possibly have been a contract killer who had flown in and left the island immediately afterwards.

In the meantime, investigations undertaken by the National Police have led to a group in the immediate vicinity of the entrepreneur. Eight people have been arrested, five of whom are now in custody. The main suspect is a 62-year-old man from Santa Cruz who was arrested more than a month

after the murder in connection with a network dealing in hashish. At the time, 2,650 kilograms of hashish, several fishing boats and cars were confiscated and the suspected head of the gang arrested.

Meanwhile, he and another person are suspected to have been involved in the shooting. Among the five suspects is the entrepreneur and lawyer E.G., who worked closely with Machin on the nightlife scene and often acted on his behalf.

Sea, fires and rejuvenation Noche de San Juan (Saint John's Eve) will be celebrated on many beaches on June 23, and bonfires are also lit in other locations to welcome the summer and as a cleansing ritual.

The celebrations are particularly famous in Los Cristianos and El Médano in the south of Tenerife and Playa Jardín

Puerto de La Cruz in the north. There are fireworks at La Caleta de Interián between Garachico and Los Silos, the celebration of the hachitos (decorated standards and torches) between La Vega and El Amparo in Icod de los Vinos, a torchlit parade accompanied by the sound of conch

horns (bucios) in San Juan de la Rambla and of course the celebrations on Playa de Las Teresitas in Santa Cruz.

There are many more celebrations that are worth visiting held in almost all boroughs all over the Canaries on this special night, which is one of magic and joie de vivre. It’s an evening

where traditionally you can do away with old ways and things and rejuvenate yourself by bathing in the Atlantic at midnight.

According to Canarian custom, he who bathes on St. John's Night is protected all year round and if you write your problems on a piece of paper and surrender it to the fire, you will be

freed from them. You could also jump over the fire three times to purify yourself and burn all evil influences.

Of course, there are also other superstitions, such as anyone who stands under a fig tree

with a guitar will be able to play it immediately and anyone who stands at the window as a single person on the 24th at dawn will see the love of his or her life pass by. It’s also said that if you stand naked with your back to the sea on the Eve of San Juan and look into the moon, you will be able to work miracles. This ritual can be tried out, but it is not really suitable for most public beaches!

Wherever you want to visit on this usually mild summer night, it will be an evening full of romance and magic that is celebrated with great pleasure by all participants.

Everyone can discover his or her own magic: at a big party among many people, romantically in the moonlight as a couple, or even alone. n

A special motif for the 100th anniversary of the sand carpet in La Orotava

The first flower and sand carpets in La Orotava were not as luxuriant as they are today, but the tradition in honour of Corpus Christi celebrates its 100th anniversary this year.

It’s not only the festival of the petal and sand carpets that has been maintained and spread, but also the Word of God in the Christian tradition. That is the motto of this year's carpet, which occupies an area of 316 square metres on the Plaza del Ayuntamiento (Town hall square) and is therefore even larger than last year to celebrate this special anniversary.

It will be designed as a total work of art, instead of being

divided into three parts as usual and work is already underway if you want to pop along and see. The colourful sands of all hues come from rocks in the Teide National Park, which the carpet makers are allowed to gather once a year as a special dispensation.

Tradition and modernity merge not only in the design of the festivities in La Orotava, but also in the message of the anniversary carpet. The focus this year is on a colourful scene in which Jesus preaches to his disciples. In the lower left corner you can see Saint Francis of Assisi, who was canonised almost 800 years ago. It’s also

a symbol of the arrival of the Franciscans in La Laguna and the foundation of the monastery of San Lorenzo 500 years ago. Another cameo shows a little boy who seems to stand out from the picture, asking for help. It’s intended to remind us of the Christian commandment to love one's neighbour, which is of topical relevance in the face of refugee flows, waves of migration and social divisions.

Christian values, according to the message, should not only be celebrated, but above all lived. Directly behind the central part, one is reminded of the first carpets 100 years ago. The complete piece is framed by

a colourful floral decoration, a total work of art that impresses, and one which should also inspire reflection.

The Corpus Christi festival will be celebrated this year in La Orotava on June 27. In the morning after the early mass at 7am, residents will begin to work on the smaller carpets in their streets, decorating the ground with designs made from petals and sand. At 6.30pm the

festive divine service begins, where Bishop Don Bernardo Álvarez Afonso is expected to officiate. Afterwards the procession to the Plaza del Ayuntamiento takes place, walking over the magnificent, ephemeral art of sand and flower carpets. As they enter the square, the Tantum Ergo and the anthem Cantemos al Amor de los Amores will be heard - an impressive and touching moment.

After this religious highlight, the San Isidro Baile de Magos with several stages will take place on June 28 at 9pm.

It’s obligatory to wear traditional Canarian costume for this event. On June 29 at 8pm, the images of the patron saints San Isidro and Santa María de la Cabeza will be carried through the historic town centre. Afterwards there will be a fireworks display and a concert by the group Son 21. The big Romería procession with magnificent floats and folklore groups begins on June 30 at 1.30pm.

If you can’t make it to La Orotava, most towns and villages have a much smaller version of the Corpus Christi carpets traditions, often using coloured rock salt instead of the special Teide ground-rock sand. Ask at your local town hall or tourist office for details. n

Saved from death in a holiday paradise On May 17 2020, Argentine businessman Roberto Morales will celebrate a new birthday, the first anniversary of the day when his new life began.

On this day he suffered a sudden cardiac arrest during his stay at the Hotel Silken Atlantida in Santa Cruz de Tenerife. "My husband had just told me that he didn't feel well and that he was dizzy. Then he collapsed on the bed. I immediately called the reception and asked for help" said wife Beatriz Rosso. She began immediately with a heart massage and a little later hotel staff and director Gabriel Wolgeschaffen arrived and continued the resuscitation effort. The guest was treated manually and with a defibrillator. A few minutes later, an ambulance team arrived. "They were frightening minutes. The manual and semi-automatic resuscitation attempts lasted for about 20 minutes. Twice the gentleman was brought back from cardiac arrest until he was finally stable enough to be taken to the hospital" recalls the hotel manager.

At Nuestra SeĂąora de Candelaria University Hospital, the guest immediately underwent surgery and a pacemaker was implanted. "I don't know how this could have happened. My diagnosis was sudden death. I was always athletic and have

no previous health issues. But I know that I survived only thanks to the quick reaction of my wife and the hotel staff and the excellent coordination with the ambulance service.

I was also treated professionally and very caringly in the

hospital. I am very grateful for this, because otherwise I would not be able to tell this story myself. From today I will always celebrate my birthday on May 17, because I was given a new life here in Tenerife" explained Roberto

Morales just two weeks later, shortly before his return flight to Argentina.

Every year the couple visits different cities in Europe and makes stops in Spain and Tenerife to visit Beatriz's family members. In this case it would

have become almost the last journey for the entrepreneur.

It’s not the first time that welltrained staff and the presence of a defibrillator have saved the lives of hotel guests. In September 2016 employees of the Aparthotel Casablanca in Puerto de La Cruz saved a guest's life and in April of this year a security guard at the hotel Marylanza Suites & Spa in Arona reacted instantly and saved the life of a Norwegian tourist. The hotel and holiday association Ashotel, which also includes the Hotel Silken Atlantida, is very proud of this and confirms it is part of the strategy it is pursuing. The Ashotel association has been part of the network for cardio-protected spaces since last year. There is an agreement with a specialist company that installs the semi-automatic defibrillators and trains hotel staff in the use of the device. If every correct move is made in an emergency, it can save lives, as this latest episode has proven once again. n

Festivals and rising stars in the film sky

The French director Ladj Ly uses his camera to point out social grievances

It’s well known that the Canary Islands are often chosen as a backdrop for commercials, photo and movie shoots.

Their biggest asset is their varied landscapes and interesting towns and cities, which offer both modern and historical ambience as well as the mild climate, but the Canaries have even more to offer in the film world. Interesting festivals are celebrated that revolve around the movie scene, such as the short film festival in La Orotava, the International Festival for Short and Extreme Films, Festivalito in La Palma or the International Festival for Environmental Cinema on the Canary Islands, FICMEC, which ended in Garachico at the beginning of June and has already been celebrated for over two decades. This year, it attracted around 10,000 people who watched short films, feature

films and documentaries that had one thing in common - The main theme is the environment.

One of the films that touched many was Chã, which tells of a village at the foot of the Chã das Caldeiras volcano in Cape Verde, whose inhabitants returned after an eruption to look for their houses in the cold lava, a scenario that could be imagined in the Canary Islands, just as part of Garachico was once buried.

"In the Canary Islands, you live with your back to the volcano because nobody wants to hear bad news." This is what the Colombian geologist Marta Lucía Calvache said in an interview during the film festival.

She witnessed the catastrophe at Nevado del Ruiz on November 13, 1985 and attended the festival this year. A few hours after the eruption, a mudslide buried the town of Armero beneath

it. The geologist worked on the volcano and will never forget this eruption, which killed 23,000 people. Particularly tragic was the fate of 12-yearold Omayra, whose three-day agony, trapped between mud and debris, attracted worldwide media attention. The eruption changed the geologist's professional career - from then

“After the eruption of the Nevado del Ruiz it was clear to us that we had to do research and publish our findings in scientific journals. If the knowledge about the possible consequences does not reach the people, our work is not complete. For more than 30 years, the Colombian government has been using education teams to ensure that knowledge reaches the inhabitants. This applies not only to volcanism, but also to earthquakes and other possible natural disasters. We live in a very (geologically) active country, but when nature surprises us, it is not because it does something extraordinary, but simply because it follows its laws, which we must respect. If we do not know the volcanoes, if we do not respect them and if we settle on their flanks, we can expect tragedies like those on the Nevado del Ruiz.”

The Canary Islands are also volcanic territory. Nevertheless, in a way we turn our backs on this reality. Is that unusual?

“I don't think the Canarian people differ from other

Since PCBs are thought to block female hormone receptors in orcas in a similar way to contraceptives, these results suggest that even small toxic

amounts could severely affect the orca's reproductive cycle and reduce fertility. This also means that chemical contamination inhibits the reproduction of wild populations, not only the orcas, but also the dolphins and possibly other marine mammals.

In this context, it should be noted that this type of testing can only be carried out on animals in a controlled environment, such as a zoo. This requires regular access to the animals in order to monitor the ovulation process in detail using ultrasound. Thus, the important role of modern zoos is emphasised. With the knowledge gained in their facilities, these animals contribute to the protection of their fellow species in the wild. n

The shooting of the Finnish series The Peacemaker in Gran Canaria will continue until August 7.

The ten episodes of the series are expected to be shot in 100 days, with only seven of them being shot in Finland and four on the Peninsula. During the remaining days in Gran Canaria, episodes will be shot at Playa del Cabrón, Meloneras, Arinaga and at the Spar offices in El Goro. It’s a political drama set in Turkey, Berlin, New York and other parts of the world. The main character is Ann-Mari Koistinen, a Finnish peace negotiator played by Irina Björklund. She works tirelessly to achieve a lasting peace between the Turks and the Kurds. Her work becomes complicated when it becomes known that a Finnish state enterprise is involved in arms deals.

The shooting of the series is expected to bring some €4.5 million to Gran Canaria. About 80 per cent of those involved in the production are local people. These include a 60-member production team and around 2,000 extras for the shooting. The series is expected to be broadcast in 2020. n

PODENCOWORLD

100 Tinerfeñan ex-pats on Dutch beach An unusual gathering of some local ex-pats took place on a Dutch beach during the last weekend of May. Over 300 podencos and podenco-mix dogs, their fourlegged brothers and sisters and their human companions got together at the beach pavilion and on the beach itself in Gravenzande in the South Holland province near The Hague.

The occasion was the annual gathering of dogs that have been rescued by Podencoworld and around a third of the dogs this year were from Tenerife.

Also present were volunteers, flight sponsors and this year a special guest, the marvellous vet from Tierra Blanca, Damián.

It’s the fifth year this annual meet and greet has been held at this wonderful location and there were lots of smiles, lots of tails wagging and lots of unions and reunions. In short, a heck of a good time was thoroughly enjoyed by all.

Podencos are used in Spain and Portugal for hunting, mainly rabbits. Too often these dogs get lost during hunting or training trips and are unchipped so their owners can’t be found. Or they are simply abandoned when they get too old to be of any use or lose their hunting instinct.

Many end up as roadkill, the lucky ones end up in rescue centres, but they are not seen as pets here, so adoption opportunities are few and far between, which is where Podencoworld comes in.

Started by a bunch of caring individuals back in 2006, Podencoworld was officially incorporated in 2011. They support over 25 shelters in Spain, and not only adopt Podencos to live with loving families in The Netherlands and Belgium, but they also support the Spanish shelters by raising money for repairs, food, medication and operations.

A brilliant place for a pooch reunion

Every cent donated is used to help the Podencos. All the dogs remain the responsibility of the Podencoworld Foundation, so that if for any reason whatsoever the new companion can’t keep it, the dog will go back to the Foundation to be rehomed, it will never go back into another refuge.

We first came across this very special Foundation in early 2015 when Milka, a lucky podenco pup from the Tierra Blanca refuge, was due to fly out to The Netherlands for a new life. Just over four years later, Milka was reunited with

her flight sponsor and the local, untiring representative of Podencoworld in Tenerife, Sabine Hellenthal, on the Gravenzande beach.

With the entry of Poema del Mar, the most modern and spectacular aquarium of its kind in Europe, the association has gained another tourist attraction.

Poema del Mar is located in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and has an area of over 12,000 square metres where over 400 different species can be seen, some of which have never before been exhibited in an aquarium. This facility, in the immediate vicinity of the striking Playa de Las Canteras, offers the visitor a real immersion into the marine world of this planet through different ecosystems and habitats from the five continents. WWF CALLS FOR PROTECTION OF THE CHINIJO ARCHIPELAGO

The largest marine reserve in Europe

The World Wildlife Fund’s eco-activists have recently called for urgent measures to protect three prominent natural parks in Spain: Doñana, Spain’s largest wetland, Las Hoces del Río Riaza in Segovia, where the continent’s largest colony of vultures lives, and the Canarian archipelago of Chinijo, off the northern tip of Lanzarote.

The archipelago consists of the uninhabited islands of Alegranza, Montaña Clara, Roque del Este, Roque del Oeste and the only inhabited island, La Graciosa, which was recognised last year as the eighth Canary island. The area covers more than 40 square kilometres and is separated from Lanzarote by the El Río Strait. The Chinijo archipelago is one of the largest marine reserves in the European Union.

It is home to a marine paradise known only to a few. More than 200 species of fish and marine mammals live there, ranging from dwarf sperm whales to dolphins and beaked whales. After protection laws were overturned by the Supreme Court at the end of last year, the protection of this marine biotope hangs in the air. “And what is even more striking is that since its recognition in 1986, there has never been a body responsible for the protection of this natural park, as is usual with other nature parks.

The Lanzarote Island Council would first have to declare the archipelago a nature park again. The plan for the protection of natural resources and the master plan for their management would have to be adopted. Although this does not automatically protect the nature park, it would be an important first step”, said Luis Suárez, WWF’s species protection officer.

“Especially now that we are facing the sixth massive extinction of species, we cannot afford to have protected areas that exist only on paper” he added. That is why he calls on the Lanzarote Island Council to act quickly to preserve the marine wealth off the coast of Lanzarote. n

DOMESTIC VIOLENCE

Woman shot by partner The autopsy of a 39-yearold woman and her 50-yearold partner who were found dead in their apartment in Agüimes on the last Wednesday in May, confirmed what the police had already suspected - the man first shot his wife and then committed suicide, both died from a shot in the head and a rifle was seized in the apartment.

The police were informed by one of the woman's daughters who had been worried that she had not heard from her mother since the previous day. When the Local Police received no response from outside the apartment, they decided to open the door. They were the first to find the dead couple.

They contacted the Guardia Civil, who took over the further investigation and confirmed shortly afterwards that this was another case of domestic violence. The 50-year-old man had a licence for the rifle and had no previous criminal record. There had been no prior indications of domestic violence. Minutes of silence for the victim were observed on all the islands.

With this confirmation of violence by her partner, the number of women killed this year in the Canary Islands at the hand of their current or former partner increased to five.

On New Year's Day, Romina Celeste was probably murdered in Lanzarote by her husband who is now in custody. She was probably killed, dismembered, burned and then thrown into the sea in parts in a particularly cruel way. So far only one plastic bag containing one of her lungs has been found. In this case, too, the husband is in custody as the alleged perpetrator. Back in February a man had been arrested in the district of Ofra in Santa

Cruz, who had presumably killed his cousin with whom he had maintained a relationship.

The most recent case occurred in April when a German man lured his wife and two sons into a forested area and killed

his wife, who was separated from him, and their 10-yearold son in a cave. The second son, aged six, escaped the tragedy and is now back in Germany. The father is also in custody. n

RAPE CASE RESULT

Lucie can breathe a sigh of relief Finally, Lucie A. accomplished what she set out to do - she transformed herself from a rape victim to a woman who fights back and fights for justice.

Island Connections reported this case in detail in issue IC 847.

She achieved this result with the verdict passed against 23-year-old Adil E.C. at the beginning of June. The presiding judges considered the account of 42-year-old Lucie A. who was raped in a chalet in Playa San Juan on August 6, 2017 credible. He also took into account the testimony of witnesses to her distress and the experts who had examined her physically and psychologically. The fact that the defendant did not show any remorse or empathy, and a demand for acquittal via his legal representative, alleging that the sex was consensual, did not work in his favour. The defendant was sentenced to twelve years imprisonment for sexual assault and sexual abuse, and ordered to pay damages

of €45,060. In addition, he is not allowed to approach Lucie for 22 years and must keep a distance of 500 metres from her place of residence. The ban on communication, which also includes third parties or any form of media, applies for just as long. After serving the prison sentence, a ten-year super-

vised release was ordered.

Even though the convict will probably never be able to pay the compensation, the sentence is satisfaction for Lucie.

What is wing-wave therapy?

Wing-wave therapy is a continuation of the EMDR therapy.

The abbreviation EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing. The therapy was developed in the late 1980s by the American Dr. Francine Shapiro for the treatment of traumatic and posttraumatic disorders in adults, adolescents and children. She has been licensed in Germany since 1991 and it has been recognised as a scientifically based psychotherapy method since 2006. A central component of the therapy is the bilateral stimulation of the brain by eye movement. Trained psychotherapists process the traumatic events by facing up to the stressful images and situations together with the patient and separating them from the emotions. The memory fades and the affected person learns to take a new perspective on the event.

In addition, wing-wave therapy not only stimulates the bilateral hemisphere of the brain, but also combines with neurolinguistic coaching. NEW THERAPY FOR SOME SPEECH DISORDERS?

Whistling language Scientists Jonathan Schuchert and Alina Shamayeva of the Ruhr University in Bochum, Germany recently researched the whistling language from El Hierro, Silbo Herreño, and that of other Canary Islands.

For this purpose, they have recorded various whistling languages in order to better understand them. At the same time, the brain activities were recorded to determine whether the right hemisphere of the brain can Whistling language as a new play a more important role form of communication for in understanding the whis- speech disorders tling language than the left.

If the working hypothesis of neuropsychological researchers is confirmed, the whistling language could be an alternative for people who suffer from a speech disorder due to a stroke or an accident and, as a result, damage to the left hemisphere.

The first neuro-scientific study on Silbo Gomera (the whistling language of La Gomera) appeared 14 years ago (Carreiras et al., 2005), which showed that the same brain areas were activated by hearing the whistling language as by hearing the spoken Spanish language. Ten years later, Professor Onur Güntürkin, also from the University of Ruhr, was occupied with the Turkish whistling language. He found out that the whistled language, in contrast to the spoken language, is not processed in the left brain sphere. In his opinion, however, both halves of the brain work “on the same level”. This university is now taking research one step further and is using electroencephalography (EEG) in which electrical changes of the brain waves can be measured, in response to the whistling language. If it is confirmed that the processing of whistled and spoken language is different, learning a whistled language could be a new option to help those affected to communicate. Thus the language, which once served the natives to communicate over long distances, could also be a modern day method of communication that could compensate for a speech loss. n

Pliers used for trimming ears and tails

The Local Police Proteu unit based in Santa Cruz de Tenerife recently confiscated nearly a hundred pliers from specialist shops that were specifically designated for trimming the ears and tails of cats and dogs.

The shortening of tails and the modelling of ears is forbidden in the Canaries. Such a drastic measIt’s easy to see what these ure may be made only for pliers can be used for medical reasons and only by veterinary surgeons. The animal protection group El Club de la Huella, discovered the articles, which can be used for other purposes, but which were expressly designated for this type of trimming, and reported their existence to the police. Depending on their size, they were offered at a price of three to five euros each. The Local Police initiated the corresponding proceedings against the shopkeepers linked to animal abuse. n

The 2019-2020 season of Ópera de Tenerife will be highlighted by great composers such as Donizetti, Verdi or Handel, but there is also room for more avant-garde and lesser-known authors such as Ullmann and Krenek, expanding the opera offer to a total of eight titles, and consolidating the Auditorio de Tenerife as the most important production centre of its kind in the Canary Islands.

L'elisir d'amore, Donizetti's most famous comic opera, which is part of the seventh edition of Opera (e)Studio, will be in charge of inaugurating the season in October, which will continue in November with one of the essential operas of the Verdi’s repertoire, Rigoletto. FOREST FIRE PREVENTION

Protecting Tenerife's forests The Tenerife Island Council, via the Environmental Protection Agency led by José Antonio Valbuena, has commissioned measures to protect the island's forests from fires.

Since fires on the Islands cannot be completely avoided, the measures should at least serve to make the spread of a possible fire more difficult.

The protective measures consist of collecting combustible material, such as pine needles and cones, pruning bushes and general clearing of underbrush in the forests. A total of

Worm-contaminated mackerel A r e s i d e n t o f Te n e r i f e who was doing business in Fuerteventura, recently stopped off at a restaurant famous for its fish specialities in the capital Puerto del Rosario.

While eating a breaded mackerel, he suddenly noticed that the fish was infested with anisakis worms. He took his plate and showed it to the waiters who were in the kitchen, pointing out the infestation. But neither the cook nor the waiter found anything special about it. They didn't even seem to know what this guest wanted.

They didn't even think about apologising or taking the plate back, but instead, they made the guest feel rather uncomfortable. But anyone who works in the restaurant trade should know that these parasites can be dangerous, as they can cause problems in the gastrointestinal tract and even serious allergies.

They should also know how to eliminate them. Anisakis larvae can survive for 50 days in a fish kept at two degrees Celsius. At minus 20 degrees Celsius they die after two hours, at plus 60 degrees Celsius they survive only two minutes and in vinegar they can survive for as much as two months. For this reason, diseases only occur in humans when the fish is consumed raw, pickled or lightly cooked.

Anisakiasis related health problems are the most common illnesses diagnosed in Japan, where 95 per cent of fish is eaten raw in the form of sushi or sashimi. This is followed by Scandinavia, where raw cod liver is a delicacy, in the Netherlands by classic matjes herring and in South America, where ceviche is widely prepared.

The most commonly affected fish species are sardine, cod, anchovy, herring, salmon, haddock, hake, whiting, mackerel,

tuna, horse mackerel, anglerfish and cod, which are used by the larvae as hosts and can thus enter the human circula-

tory system. To be on the safe side, the fish should be well cooked or frozen for a period before being prepared. n

Wanted man from the USA arrested Guardia Civil officers, in collaboration with the American FBI, have arrested a 53-year-old American man S.N.K.N. in Guargacho as part of Operation Nikorina.

The American, of Russian descent, was born in France and was the subject of an international detention order for alleged kidnapping, torture and threats. Together with an accomplice, he apparently overwhelmed his victim outside the entrance to a shopping mall with an electronic weapon. The victim claimed that he had woken up in a room with his hands and feet tied, then taken to a van, beaten and his hands burned with a welding torch before being forced to reveal his place of residence, alarm code and the hiding place of $50,000.

The suspect was thought to be in Madrid or Tenerife. In fact, he was living with his wife in a rented apartment in Guargacho in the borough of San Miguel de Abona. The Guardia Civil officers emphasised that criminals who flee like to hide in crowded places where many foreigners live, making it easier for them to pass unnoticed.

The number of arrests of criminals wanted by international warrants in Spain last year was 915, which is 22 per cent more than the previous year. n

Born in Santa Cruz, the artist began his guitar studies at the Santa Cruz Conservatory. About four years ago he began to live out his penchant for old musical instruments and studied with great masters of the respective instruments. He has made numerous appearances both as a soloist and as part of an orchestra. Entry to all these concerts is free of charge. n

NEW ACCESS REGULATION

By bus only to Punta de Teno

Since the end of May, a new regulation on access to Punta de Teno has been in force.

Until now the access was free from Monday to Wednesday and from Thursday to Sunday the route was served by route 369 of the public bus company TITSA. Now, a new regulation has entered into force, which stipulates that access by private cars is generally prohibited and that the most north western tip of the island can only be reached by bus.

The bus runs from 10.10am to 6.05pm, on the hour. The travel time is approximately 20 minutes and five minutes after arrival the bus leaves Punta del Teno for the return journey. Departure is from the bus station of Buenavista del Norte with stops at the Plaza de Los Remedios, Calle de Puente, Cruz de Toledo, the Casablanca crossing and then Punta de Teno. The fare is one euro per trip and must be paid in cash.

Punta de Teno is a very popular bathing spot at the north western tip of the island. The trip there leads along a breathtaking coastal cliff. On July 12 2016, and not for the first time, part of this road disintegrated and made it impassable. Miraculously, no cars were on this part of the road at that time and nobody was injured. But 133 people and five dogs were suddenly cut off from the outside world and had to fly out in a 13-hour deployment of four helicopters, whose journeys were interrupted by the onset of the night when flying became impossible. After the road had been repaired, the new regulation was initiated. Now it is only possible for private individuals to reach the bathing bay by bus. There are only a few exceptions, for residents, workers and fishermen. A new initiative will also open up the area of the Punta de Teno lighthouse to visitors, watch this space. n

A tasting event for connoisseurs and wine lovers

Wine lovers should diary June 17 as Wine Day. For the ninth time, the Vinófilo Wine Distribution Tasting Room will take place in the Tenerife Auditorium Adán Martín in Santa Cruz.

The company sells 400 Canarian, national and international wines. Wine tasting days have been held not only in Gran Canaria, where the company is based, but also in Tenerife since 2012. A total of 40 wineries will present themselves directly to the public. The wine tasting is aimed at hoteliers, restaurateurs and specialist shops as well as passionate wine connoisseurs. Some of the wines distributed

by Vinófilos can be found in the island’s star restaurants.

As always, an expert will be present as an invited guest and this year it is Ferrán Centelles, who was sommelier at the famous Restaurant El Bulli for eleven years and was voted Spain’s best sommelier in 2006. This honour was followed in 2011 by the National Gastronomy Award. He also works with the renowned wine expert and eno-critic Jancis Robinson in the assessment of Spanish wines. Preparation Wash the cress and finely slice the leaves. Cut the tomato and onion into small cubes and the watermelon radish into fine slices.

Butter the bread on both sides and toast in a pan.

A wave of awards for Bodega Tunte Three wines that can stand up and win on the international stage The Bodega Tunte has been a family business for over two decades

Bodega Tunte in Gran Canaria recently received a wave of awards.

At the International Wine Challenge the wines Valara, Berode and Oro Blanco de Tirajana won one silver and two bronze medals. At the Vino y Mujer 2019 competition, Valara won a diamond prize in the category of natural sweet wines and Oro Blanco de Tirajana won an honorary award in the category of white wines not stored in wood.

The International Wine Challenge in Great Britain is one of the biggest challenges on the international wine scene

and for the Bodega Tunte it is almost a kind of talisman.

Since 2015 the Bodega Tunte has been able to inspire the jury again and again with its wines and has always come away with medals. A blend of the grapes Malvasía Volcánica, Verdello and Albillo produces the top product Oro Blanco de Tirajana. This wine was awarded a bronze medal in 2015 and 2016, an honour in 2018 and bronze again in 2019. The wine Barode

made from the Malvasia-Volcánica grape received silver in 2016 and bronze in each of the last two competitions. The sweet wine Valara is produced exclusively from the Moscatel de Alejandria grape and was awarded bronze in 2018 and silver this year.

The Concurso Vino y Mujer competition was held in Madrid on May 9 and 10. It’s the only competition that, in addition to the wine itself, takes into account the participation

of women in the production and marketing of wines. For ten years, this wine competition has been a point of reference worldwide. "The Bodega Tunte is the only one from Gran Canaria to have won a prize this year" says Diana Bordón, Managing Director.

Bodega Tunte is a family business that was founded in 1998 and handed over to the next generation in 2015.

The Malvasía Volcánica, Verdello and Albillo grape varieties grow on vineyards 900 metres above sea level in the borough of San Bartolomé de Tirajana. Last year, more than 530,000 kilos of grapes were harvested. Since 2015, not only has the next generation taken over, but the enologist Alberto González has also been integrated into the company. Since then, the Bodega has won more than 30 medals and this year they have also been successful twice in competitions in France. n

The wine Viñátigo Vijariego Blanco 2017 was awarded a gold medal in the Sommelier Wine Awards (SWA) in Great Britain.

This is the only wine competition exclusively aimed at the British hotel industry that annually awards prizes for the best wines for hotels, restaurants and bars in the country. The SWA has been celebrated annually since 2012. This time, several teams of six people tasted 60 to 70 wines a day over several days, making it all the more remarkable that one of the coveted gold awards went to the Bodega Viñátigo in Tenerife. “This Viñátigo recognition means that our uniqueness convinces hotels and philosophy of defending old grape and restaurants varieties, as we use them, is becoming in Great Britain better known and more competitive and our Canary quality wines are increasingly appreciated in the British market. We would also like to thank our sales team at Hallgarten & Novum Wines, without whose commitment this success would not have been possible” said director Juan Jesús Méndez. The award-winning wine is made entirely from the Vijariego Blanco grape. In the glass the clear strawyellow wine shimmers. It has an aroma of pear and vanilla with a smoky note and its taste is intense and slightly acidic.

The ideal serving temperature is nine degrees Celsius. n

Mr Jones!

The lovely Jones pictured here arrived at the K9 refuge a few months ago after being found in a valley by three young men.

He didn’t have a chip, was very skinny and nervous and had no idea what was going on.

He spent the first few days shaking and wouldn’t let anyone get too close. It took a while for him to start to trust his new carers and K9 knew he needed a playmate. Luckily there were three dogs sharing at the time who welcomed Jones into their little pack and he soon settled in. Happily, all three of his kennel mates were adopted in one week, but that left poor Jones on his own, not really understanding what was going on.

He is such a sweet, quiet boy, who likes to play. He gets on with a lot of dogs so K9 were able to quickly match him with two others in the shelter, which helped. He’s only young and loves getting out for long walks and is happy with or without other dogs while walking. He’s really come out of his shell and loves to get pets and cuddles, and of course treats too! He really needs a forever home now though, with a loving family to welcome him in to their lives. Diving centre approved The Lanzarote Island Council, under the incumbent president Pedro San Ginés has recently put out to tender the construction project for the future diving centre in Puerto del Carmen.

"With this project, which is unique in the Canary Islands, we are responding to one of the main demands of the tourism and sports sectors" stressed Saray Rodríguez, acting Councillor for Public Works. The budget for the project is estimated at just under €729,000 and is being co-financed by the Canary Islands Government. The concession from the coastal authority is currently valid for 15 years with the option of an extension for a further 15 years and occupies around 966 square metres of public space. Dancing pairs from the Domingo y Eva Baile dance school and from Salsa schools from all islands met on the Plaza de la Patrona de Canarias in Candelaria to set a new record together and with 1,291 dancers, this goal was convincingly achieved.

A group from the Los Verodes Centre for the Disabled in La Laguna, where people with intellectual disabilities live and which is run by the Island Council Centre for Social Affairs and Social Hygiene, IASS, recently took part in a specially designed sailing course.

In a theoretical part, the participants got to know the basics of sailing and navigation concepts and then went on to practical application on board to experience what they had already learned. Have fun on and with the water was the motto of the day, which everyone followed with great pleasure.

The Los Verodes Centre for the Disabled was opened in 1978. It’s intended to promote the social integration of mentally handicapped people who receive professional training at the centre that corresponds to their abilities.

This is very successful because the disabled people at the centre are extremely autonomous and socially integrated in their everyday life through the training they receive.

Sport and leisure activities are also supported, in fact they often take part in sporting and other events which are usually associated with commemoration days, such as the Día de Canarias.

One of the aims of the Island Council’s Tenerife 2030 Strategy is to create a prepared, active and supportive community, which will also come together through sport, where people with disabilities are not excluded, but integrated. n

CD Tenerife now has a frantic couple of months ahead. They need to find a new manager (favourite at the time of writing is Fran Ferdinand from Almería) and around 14 new players. They are also promising big changes at the heart of the club.

We need to improve in all areas otherwise next season could be as bad as this one. Lessons must be learned! Players are back from training around July 20 and the new season will kick off on August 17. n

Tenerife safe with a game to spare

By Chris Todd It has been a season to forget for the blanquiazules and we must admit that this time we have been fortunate to stay up.

The away form was simply shocking but the blanquiazules retained their Spanish 2nd division status largely thanks to their home form which included some superb comebacks in the Heliodoro Stadium. It was more spirit than quality performances or tactical genius that won us the points but at the end of the day it does not matter how you do it.

Victories against leaders Osasuna 3-2 (after being 0-2 down) and in the Canarian derby stand out but the game that practically sealed our survival was the recent 2-1 win against play-off chasing Oviedo. That day veteran defender Carlos Ruiz scored the winner and in the process, earned himself a year-long contract extension.

Major changes are on the way at CD Tenerife for next season. Manager Sampedro was only brought in for the last four games and even though his time was successful he will leave the club this week.

Sampedro was just a stop-gap and not part of the long term plans. In the summer around 14 players are likely to leave in a mass clear out.

Young defender Jorge Sáenz has signed for Valencia where he will be joined by Serbian Racic who was on a six-month

loan deal. It certainly was a strange set up with Racic who was frankly brilliant in his first few matches at Tenerife but talk of a €15 million move to a Premier League club in February appeared to take his attention away from the task in hand and since then he has been average at best.

The one player that Tenerife really needs to hold on to is Luis Milla. The midfield dynamo has been a class act and this has not gone unnoticed by a few La Liga clubs including Valladolid and Getafe. The chance at 24 years old to play at the top level may be one he cannot turn down but Tenerife will be attempting to persuade Milla to sign a new deal as soon as the final whistle on the season is blown.
