General strike R
eaction to news of the stringent cuts announced recently by the national government in moves to reduce the national debt has been loud and angry.
Trade unions throughout Spain, including the Canaries, have given their full backing to plans for a series of actions aimed at forcing the Spanish government to reverse the decision which would see a civil service five per cent pay cut this year with a freeze from 2011. The actions began on 20 May with protests outside government buildings on the islands and will be followed on 8 June with a general strike. The two biggest unions, UGT and CCOO, have called on other unions to throw their weight behind the actions to force a U-turn before the cuts take effect, in the case of public sector workers at the end of June. While schools and health centres cannot, under law, be completely
Outrage at public sector wage cuts closed, expect a very limited service on those days unless there is some agreement with the unions. The government measures, announced towards the end of May in parliament, were welcomed as being “brave and necessary” by the European Council President, Herman Van Rompuy, and the President of the European Commission, José Manuel Durao Barroso. They were also taken, following, it is widely reported, a call to Spanish president Zapatero from Barack Obama, urging him to take the steps deemed necessary to avoid Spain following the same financial path as Greece. It is calculated that the new measures should help bring the deficit down from 11.2 per cent of GDP in 2009 to just over six per cent of GDP in 2011. Fuller information on all the measures proposed can be found on page 2.
