In the most recent development, the strikers, who began their public demonstration on September 1st, say they won’t halt their action despite a statement from town mayor Gumersindo García that he will not fly to

Madrid to plead their cause and seek a reversal of the demolition decision unless the families call a halt to the protest. Instead the hunger strikers, protesting in the middle of Santa Cruz city, say they will only leave their makeshift camp on the main square if they receive a written guarantee that their seafront homes will not be pulled down. The protesters have support from many quarters, and representatives recently met with Cabildo president Ricardo Melchior, vice-president José Manuel

Bermúdez and planning councillor Pino de León. According to a Cho Vito spokesperson, Tomás González, the president’s intervention was welcomed as always. Pino de León said it “wasn’t a good idea” for the demolition, scheduled for September 20th, to go ahead and while the Cabildo wouldn’t stand in the way of any legal process, each situation merited individual consideration and attention in the search for a solution within legal parameters. The mayor told local press that “we can’t simply pay more attention to those who shout the loudest….in this case there are currently signed legal documents stating that the homes in question are illegal and must be demolished”. Therefore, he stated, the only way to save Cho Vito is to persuade the coastal department that this small populated tract “contains elements of ethnographic value that are part of the zone’s heritage”, and that should be protected. García also claimed that in his opinion both the regional Canarian government and the Tenerife Cabildo had done little to help. As well as the threat over the Cho Vito homes, twenty houses and two restaurants in the Punto del Viento zone in Las Galletas are also listed for demolition. In this case the majority of owners are reported to have accepted the decision and offers made under an expropriation order.
