Fiestas and other events Nuestra Señora de la Encarnación and Santa Úrsula Adeje, 13th to 19th October This is the biggest and most important fiesta of the year for Adeje, with religious, cultural, sporting and festive events for all the family. A fabulous, not to be missed romería takes place at lunchtime on Sunday 19th in the Calle Grande, the town’s main street, with wagons and folk groups, followed by the Baile de Magos in the evening for which traditional dress

Mota’s magic

Small in stature, big in reputation, huge in personality and talent. Spanish choreographer Carmen Mota’s back and with a new show, Airam will yet again fill the Pirámide de Arona with eager fans. From a working Madrid family with no history of dance Carmen Mota’s first memories of a public performance were of an escape as a child from her mother to a local neighbourhood. “I was dancing to local music and everyone was applauding, but for my mother it was shameful”, she says. “It was a different Spain, to be an artist was almost like wanting to be a prostitute”,

she told me with candour. “There was no respect for cultural art”. Her artistic career as a dancer began under the guiding hand of the distinguished teacher Pilar López, with whom she made her debut at the age of 16. Her early years were also marked by her appearance as guest artiste in the choreographer Mariemma’s dance troupe, which served as a launching pad for the future. At just 17 years of age Carmen was soloist with the famous dancer Antonio. She created her first dance company in 1977, with whom she toured Spain, the rest of Europe, the United States and Canada. Her innovative choreographies began

hidden identities and more than one love triangle the passion of the dance combines perfectly with the story line. Add in the touch of delicious humour that Mota always brings to the stage, this is set to be another smash hit.

to acquire a distinctive aesthetic sense that made them easily distinguishable anywhere in the world, as they incorporated very different styles in a fusion of modern and traditional Spanish dance. While Carmen Mota’s talent for dancing might not have been inherited, it is something she has passed on to her son, Joaquín Marcelo, who though deaf from an early age due to a virus, now works side by side with his mother in choreographing the shows. Driven by his personal conception of storytelling through the language of flamenco dance, his past creations Carmen, Don Juan, Romeo in Love and Esencia de Amor always respected the original work for which he provides the choreography, the lighting design, the stage decoration and the stage direction. Airam is his fifth show at the Pirámide de Arona. Airam is based loosely on the smash hit Victor/Victoria premise. With

Moments before sunrise, surrounded by stars, the sea and the silence of the breeze and the water, the dimensions that you are familiar with become distorted in a timeless world. I stood gripping the wheel, maintaining our heading on the compass. Only the deck of the boat before me provided a reference with which to compare the immenseness of the space which surrounded me. I began to understand the size of the Earth, and me. Tom, my shift companion and owner of the boat, was below deck in the stern working with navigation charts and the GPS. Dawn broke. Suddenly, with a snort beside me to the starboard, a speckled dolphin bade me ‘good morning’ and allowed himself to be swept towards the stern to play in the wake from the boat.

The journey began two days previously, in San Sebastián de La Gomera. For the boat it was a return to its port, Sotogrande in the province of Cádiz after competing in the 24th edition of the regatta from Huelva to La Gomera. With a crew of 15 including a doctor, it had established a new record in 81 hours and two minutes, an hour and a quarter less than the previous record, and had qualified in second position having made up time. It is a boat designed for ocean class competitions, light, very fast, and with little consideration for comfort. Tokio II, a Volvo Ocean 60 Class racer, was designed by John Swarbrick for Chris Dickson’s racing team and was built in 1993 in New Zealand. 19 metres long, with a beam of five metres, a 27 metre high mast and a three metre draft, it can unfurl almost 500 square metres of canvas. It can list or heel to an inclination of up to 40 degrees. On the practical side, it has a suction pump toilet, a small kitchen and tiny, uncomfortable foldaway bunk beds. If the wind drops, the small 40CV engine destroys the eardrums of the crew with its slow but relentless drumming. There were eight crew on this return journey: two Austrians, two Germans, an Italian and three Spaniards. With four shifts of two persons, two hours on standby and six hours of rest, the day is devastating. There is nowhere to escape from the sun, except in the bunks, which were also the most uncomfortable place on the boat. If we weren’t on duty at the wheel or preparing a manoeuvre, we slept, read, tidied up our things or got our clothes ready for the night shift. As sundown approached, we prepared the hot meal of the day, usually rice or pasta, then we all met on deck to enjoy the sunset. The atmosphere was relaxed, usually full of jokes, laughter and long conversations. But sometimes we just could not resist staring at the magic of the sunset which reigned in silence. As night fell, we Spaniards stayed on deck. I spent some time before my first shift from 11pm until 1am, chatting

with Diego and Freddy about the stars, navigation and marine knots, as in the darkness the sea seemed to inspire such conversation. The darkness, for sure, was only relative darkness, as the moon in its fourth quarter shone an intense light on the sea and converted the silence of the early hours into a succession of scenes reminiscent of movies or literature: Conrad, Captain Ahab (Moby Dick), Jules Verne, Magellan, and Errante the Flying Dutchman come to mind. They are all well known figures of reality or fiction who crossed the waters of our imaginations many times. At mid-morning on the fifth day of our journey we spotted the coast of Morocco. Marine traffic such as merchant ships and tankers began to increase and gather around us. A couple of hours later we could see Mediouna and then we left Tangiers to starboard before making out the Spanish coast in the distance to the prow. We crossed the Strait of Gibraltar diagonally on

a north-easterly heading, crossing the paths of various groups of pilot whales and bottle-nosed dolphins. The constant wind in the Strait took us towards the coast of Algeciras which appeared to be besieged by fleets of tankers which were anchored and waiting to be reloaded before continuing their own journeys. We managed to get through them, feeling somewhat like a mosquito amongst giants, and headed towards Sotogrande whose green coastline was visible only a few miles away. We docked half an hour later. This manoeuvre was much easier than we thought and the boat fitted perfectly between another sailing boat and a giant and ostentatious motor yacht. It seemed strange to be on terra firma, even though it had only been five days since we left La Gomera. The evening was wonderful and we were rewarded only too well with plenty of delicious cold beer. That night we slept on the boat which seemed to be uncomfortable tied up on the jetty, away from its natural element. With the first light of morning, we were converted once again into civilised beings, thanks to a good hot shower, a shave and clean clothes. Even though we looked less like mariners in appearance, this did not make the task of saying goodbye to the boat and our travelling companions any more bearable and despite the recommendation of Joseph Conrad, which even he was unable to follow, we were more in love with the sea than ever.

In mid-June we set about clearing the piles of rubble and rubbish from the site. This will require at least two skips. Permission is needed from the Ayuntamiento (local council) if you need to put the skips in the street. This is fairly simple to arrange. We paid 9.50 euros for a permit for two weekends. You have to go to the Ayuntamiento though, it cannot be done over the phone. Most councils will try to find someone who speaks English, but this cannot be guaranteed. They will come out and advise you where the skip can be placed and mark the spot with a ‘no parking’ sign if it is on the road. There is a damp problem with the lower part of the wall, so we are going to treat this inside and out as well as tile the outside wall to about a metre high. This will prevent a recurrence of the problem. OCTOBER 2008

Step Three: Measure down from the chalk line the number of whole tiles you will have, then fix a wooden batten to the wall at the point where you will need to cut tiles. Step Four: Using a toothed spreader, spread tile adhesive over approximately a square metre. Affix the tiles, starting at the batten, using the plastic crosses as spacers. Step Five: Continue step four until all the whole tiles have been laid, then leave for 24 hours. Then remove the batten and affix the cut tiles. How you cut the tiles depends on the type of tiles you are using and how much you want to spend on cutting tools. Please email Robert if you would like advice on this.

Robert’s trade secret If the tiles are more than 20mm thick, screw some good quality screws into the wall to help support the tiles. They must be the type which will not rust and must not protrude beyond the tile surface.

High technology safety Honda’s Collision Mitigation Braking System (CMBS), uses a radar built into the front grille. A radar signal and return echo frequency calculates the distance and closing speed to the car in front of you. If you’re getting too close, too fast, you’ll see a flashing indicator and hear a warning beep. Then your seat belt will be automatically tightened and the brakes lightly applied. If no avoidance action has been taken, the seat belts will be pulled back tightly and the brakes applied strongly. On the road We drove a saloon equipped with the 2.4 litre 200hp petrol engine and a five speed manual gearbox and were told that it retails at 29,500 euros. This was the fully equipped Executive version with very pleasing leather upholstery. There is an abundance of storage space inside, and the already generous boot area can be expanded by lowering the rear 60/40 seats by using a switch inside the boot. There is no spare wheel, instead there is a tool kit, tyre pressure gauge and a puncture repair spray. As long as a puncture is all your tyres suffer from, this is fine. Inside, there is such a range of effortless adjustments available on both the driver and front passenger seats that you are sure to find the perfect position in terms of height, tilt and lumbar support. The steering wheel is also adjustable. Visibility is good all round, all the controls are well positioned and the dashboard is clear,

attractive and easy to see. This vehicle is extremely well laid out and lacks very little. On the road the power steering is progressive and the suspension fairly firm, but due to its high level of interior comfort, bumps in the road are not too noticeable although it is worth remembering that there is not much ground clearance. It is easy and comfortable to drive and has oodles of power. On winding mountain roads, the Accord climbs effortlessly, grips the road on bends with no over- or under-steer and generally feels very safe and solid. In other words, it’s a pleasure to drive. Think opulence - think luxury - think the ultimate golfing experience and you may come close to the feeling created by this magnificent course. Everything radiates exclusivity. We were greeted to begin what proved to be a very special day. The course was quiet, we saw only one other player throughout the day. Each hole is given its own individual name and large fruit bowls appear at every third or fourth tee, replenished during the day.

We collected our buggy, complete with water on ice, golf towels, tees and sophisticated satellite navigation system. We practised on the putting green and then made our way to the first tee and enjoyed the holeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s undulating uphill fairway. The third hole has four bunkers in front of the green at the end of a long Par 5 making the third approach shot very difficult. The fourth has a large lake hazard at the start of a challenging 200 metre Par 3. The water hazard runs down the left hand side of the fairway to a much contoured green, making putting difficult once you pass the four bunkers guarding the green. Hole 5 features a double dog leg and the Par 5 sixth presents a narrow target area with a bunker in the centre of the fairway. However, long hitters would be able to reach the undulating green in two. Hole 7 gave me my first par of the day - the area between the tee and the green being entirely covered by ornamental gardens so carry is required all the way of the 140 metres to the green. The eighth is extremely unusual - a long downhill right-angled dog leg left leading to an elevated green surrounded by bunkers, its narrow fairway making it worthy of its Stroke Index 1 rating. The ninth is another spectacular hole featuring a natural waterfall in a barranco splitting the fairway. The fairway of the Par 5 tenth curves around three separate ponds to reach a contoured green. The eleventh fairway drops steeply down with the approach shot to the green crossing a water hazard. Finally the eighteenth features a narrow fairway with a double dog leg winding itself downhill to a stream and up to an elevated tee, guarded by yet more coral white sand bunkers. Star hole? Difficult to choose from 18 gems, but my vote goes to the highly unusual eighth.

To find this hidden jewel, from Guía de Isora take the road signposted for Aripe and Chirche, follow it through these charming villages and you will find the car park for the Mirador just above. From Chio, take the road which leads to the Mount Teide National Park, and turn right at the signpost for Chirche. This trip is well worth the effort and you are sure to want to return.

Siam Park opens

Two thousand guests attended the inauguration of the much awaited water kingdom, Siam Park, in Costa Adeje. Munster Fermier, or farmhouse Munster, is made by the farmer with the milk from his own cows, before being brought to the natural cellars at Rochesson in the Upper Vosges. Mont D’Or is not a year-round cheese, it is only produced between mid-August and mid-March. Morbier is made with milk from Montbéliard cows, a deliciously authentic cheese with a curious origin. The milk producers, often working high up in the mountains, did not have enough milk to produce

a cheese in one single go. They came up with the idea of covering the curd (unmatured cheese) made from the morning’s milking with a fine layer of ash to protect and conserve it. Curd from the evening’s milking would then be added at the end of the day to finish the cheese. That is how Morbier came to have its characteristic black line running through the middle of the cheese. Ermitage Morbier is made in small cheese dairies in the high plateaux of the Doubs. Usually eaten at the end of the meal, it can also be enjoyed as an appetiser, served hot as part of the main dish or simply nibbled as a snack. Finally, Comté is produced in the Franche-Comté region using unpasteurised milk from cows fed on grass growing in the meadows of the Jura mountains. The music man Once upon a time every town had its music man, someone who sculptured, whittled, glued and carved instruments in their spare time to liven up the local fiestas. In the remoter parts of the island, the tradition continues and in El Palmar, Buenavista del Norte, the music man is José Manuel Afonso Rodríguez, known locally as Manolo. The music man of El Palmar

Materials are not easy to come by

at the island’s craft fairs. He wasn’t very fond of teaching people and it was only towards the end of his life when he began to pass on his skills to his son-in-law. When he died in 2001, Manolo took on the mantle of musical instrument maker in the town and obtained his artisan’s credentials about six years ago. His simple workshop is in the ground floor of his house and although he can make other instruments, nowadays he tends to concentrate on drums as some of the materials, such as a goat’s jawbone for the mini cymbal rattle shown here, are very difficult to come by. For the standard drums, he uses pine wood for the rims and 9mm thick sound box, although chestnut can also be used. The wood is slowly steamed into shape around a mould then fixed in place. The drum’s head is made from goat’s skin which Manolo cures and hand-stretches over the sound box. Depending on the end use, the hair may be left on it which makes tensing the head a little more complicated. Tensing rods are made from cord and the lugs are hand-carved wooden blocks. The long thin single-headed conga drums, carved from palm trunks and the bases of the giant American agaves (also known as Century plants), are also topped with goat’s skin but have no tensing rods or lugs and Manolo also mends drums made by other craftsmen. During our visit he showed us a broken drum that a customer had sent him all the way from New York to mend. Materials are not easy to come by, especially the goat skins. In the olden days before European

crafts Manolo works from home

rules and regulations which force everybody to use the island abattoir, locals wanting a drum would simply ask for the next skin from the next goat to be slaughtered in the area, nowadays they have to be bought. The island’s craftsmen and women are facing stiff competition from cheap imports, but a craft-made item is a thing of beauty which will last a lifetime. A small drum costs just under 80 euros and takes about 40 hours to make and Manolo and his family work on them in their spare time. Look out for Manolo at all the main craft fairs, or his drums are also on sale at La Venta in the main church

square in Buenavista del Norte. If you prefer you can view the pieces at his home or order a specific drum by calling 650953166 for an appointment (Spanish speakers only). Once in El Palmar turn in front of the cultural centre/chemist building, follow the road around to the right and take the first left into El Bujerito. His house is number 2, on the right-hand corner.

Frost on the iron latch stung her fingers. She stepped inside the shed. Flanked by wood and wintering spiders, she paced the frozen floor. Nickel-sized bloodstains blackened by dirt dotted the long bench that shouldered stacks of kindling. Where was the splintery axe handle; the oiled razor strap; the rusty bicycle chain: these things her older b r o t h e r s whispered about? Through thin slits in the siding, she could see her father. She backed away and listened to his footsteps; hollow on the walkway. Breath clouds hung like a white hood over her head. He stood outside the door. She was shaking. The door swung open. She broke into a sob. He motioned her to sit. She watched him pull a knife from his pocket. She cried harder. He sat beside her and took a pipe from his coat pocket, then crossed his legs.

They discussed the dynamics of lies. Mothers. And water vapour.

No punishment was more feared than the wood shed. According to farm legend, escape along the planked path to purgatory hadn’t been achieved by even the swiftest child.

He stood up and told her to stay put for another hour. At the door, he turned to her and said “Should anyone ask - I whipped your bottom with a brier switch,” then winked and left. The sweet aroma of my father’s tobacco still lingers in our wood shed.
