Carnaval The big party, having drawn to a close in the capitals of Santa Cruz and Las Palmas, as well as major towns including Puerto de la Cruz, now moves on to smaller towns across the islands.

The Carnaval Queen for Granadilla de Abona will be chosen at a grand gala at 9pm on 13th March, the town’s Carnaval procession takes place on the evening of the 14th and the Burial of the Sardine will be at 5pm on the 15th. Prior to this, there are an assortment of events planned at other towns in the municipality.

The dates for Los Cristianos are March 7th to 16th, with main events taking place at the Recinto Ferial, and for

Los Gigantes between March 5th and 9th. This means that the main procession will be on Sunday 15th and the Burial of the Sardine with all the fireworks on the 16th in Los Cristianos.

Meanwhile in Maspalomas, Gran Canaria, the Gala for the election of the Carnaval Queen will be on 14th March and for the Infant Queen on the 15th. There will be a traditional Carnaval night on the 17th, and the extremely popular Gala for the election of the Drag Queen on the 19th. In Maspalomas, the Sardine is ‘rescued’ on the morning of the 20th, the main Carnaval procession will be on the 21st, and the Burial of the Sardine on the 22nd. The 20th March is also the Day of the Tourist.

Whichever island you are on, there is much partying still to be done.

Concerts Popular rock band Revolver will be performing two concerts in the Canaries this month. The first at 10pm on 12th March in Santa Cruz, and the second on the 14th in Las Palmas.

Opera The opera season returns to the Teatro Pérez Galdós in Las Palmas on the 1st, 3rd, 5th and 7th March with Il Trovatore by Giuseppe Verdi, on the 2nd a Recital Concert by the Berlin Ensemble, on 22nd, 24th, 26th and 28th, Robert Devereux by Gaetano Donizetti, on the 23rd a Recital Concert by Midori (violin), and on the 31st a Recital Concert by Trio Jerusalem.

Oscar aside, Penélope Cruz has come a long way and has helped, along with her significant other Javier Bardem, change some of the stereodriven perceptions about Spanish/Latin actors in Hollywood.

Cruz, who grew up just outside of Madrid, took ballet classes from the age of four but decided that if she was going to tread the boards, it would have to be in a less painful manner. “It’s a very sadistic thing,” she said of being a ballet dancer. “You get used to bleeding and smiling at the same time.”. So, by the age of fourteen she had hung up her ballet shoes and, instead, turned her attention to making films. She shot to national fame in the early nineties, after playing a sexually-charged role in the amusing, surreal and borderline perverse Jamon, Jamon. It was Spanish director and two-time

Oscar-winner, Pedro Almódovar, who opened the Hollywood doors for Penélope when he cast her as a pregnant nun with Aids in his Oscar-winning hit Todo Sobre Mi Madre. From there she went on to make a string of movies, and her rising profile wasn’t harmed by very public romances with Tom Cruise and Mathew McConaughey .

She has joined the growing number of actors who have a successful crossover career, making films with American and Spanish directors. Her previous Oscar nomination, in the best Actress category, for Volver, was directed by Almovódar, whose next big screen presentation, Los Abrazos Rotos (Broken Embraces), some of which was filmed in Lanzarote, also stars Penélope.

Following on from the last issue we left Aurora entering Gatun Lake, what an amazing place this is, the vegetation, wildlife and the number of small islands just makes this lake a very special place to be. Shortly afterwards Aurora entered the Culebra cut and the first mule was made fast as the ship approached the Pedro Miguel Locks. One hour later she cleared the locks and set course through the Miraflores Lake.

At 1643 with the mules all fast, Aurora entered the upper chamber of the Miraflores Locks, 13 minutes later she entered the lower chamber. Not long after that she cleared the Miraflores Locks, entered the Pacific Ocean and passed under the Bridge of the Americas. The local pilot disembarked and the Captain rang full away on passage. Sunday started partly cloudy with a temperature of 27 degrees, but Monday saw a beautiful sunny day, calm sea and 19 degrees.

The ship had been paralleling the coastlines of Nicaragua, Honduras, El Salvador, Guatemala and Mexico as we headed to Acapulco.

Tuesday and we had arrived in Acapulco. What a stunning landscape, the coastal hills of the Sierra Madre plunge down almost to the city, which itself unfolds around the bay. This is one of the most famous beach resorts in Mexico- its main attraction is warm waters and almost constant sunshine all year round. Acapulco is situated in the state of Guerrero, 260 miles south west of Mexico City. The touristy area of town is along the ‘strip’, the Avenida Costera Miguel Aleman. It is on this stretch where you will find most of the restaurants, luxury hotels and shops.

However, before we get too excited about getting around and seeing everything, here are a few numbers to record in case you have any problems.

Police 4868222, Red Cross 4854100, British Consulate 4841650. Banks are open from 9am to 5pm Monday to Friday and they are all over the place. The currency is the Mexican Peso, however US dollars are accepted as well as most credit cards. Taxis are cheap and plentiful, however sometimes the condition of some of the cars leaves a lot to be desired. Verify the price before getting into the taxis . Tips are not expected when you hire a taxi by the hour for sightseeing.

So what happened here in the past? Ruled by the Toltecs for centuries, Acapulco came under Aztec domination at the end of the 15th century, before another Indian tribe, the Tarascans held it for a few

years. This power struggle paved the way for the conquest by the Spaniards. Sixty years after the arrival of the Spaniards, King Philip the second of Spain, the husband of Mary Tudor, determined that Acapulco should be the only official port for trade between America and Asia. Apart from high prices, taxes and contraband, Acapulco was riding high until Sir Francis Drake appeared. The pirates intercepted ships coming from Manila and grabbed most of the treasures. It was not until the 1920s when wealthy Mexicans began to

arrive that the city we see today started to develop.

Apart from sitting in the sun on the most beautiful beaches, eating wonderful food and watching people, what is there to see? Top of the list is La Quebrada. It is here where you will find the famous clavadistas or cliff divers. These people have been throwing themselves into the sea since 1934. Posed on a promontory more than 130 feet above sea level, the divers appear on the rock and look down at the surf pounding the rocks below.

A prayer, a moment of meditation and a nail biting wait for the spectators before a diver plunges in a perfect flying arc down into a small crevice, judging exactly when the incoming sea will flood it. At the point of entry the sea is only 11 feet deep when the tide is in.

It is a truly amazing spectacle and not to be missed.

When we were there, diving times were every day at 13.00 and 19.30, 20.30, 21.30, and 22.30. The show can be seen from the Mirador Hotel or from the viewing area on the cliff.

There are lots of sporting activities to get involved in such as deep sea fishing, water sports, scuba diving, horse riding, golf and tennis. However probably the most popular activity will be to sample some of the wonderful food the country has to offer. Seafood is plentiful and cheap but restaurants range from the roof top gourmet establishments to hamburger joints and tiny back street places frequented by the locals.

Unfortunately time just slipped away and we were heading back to the ship with fond memories of our visit. At 17.56 we slipped our mooring and set a course that would take us to San Francisco, with three days at sea we were looking forward to enjoying some relaxation, private parties and catching up on some reading. However, on board ship there is always a full programme of events should you wish to get involved.

A typical day may include a natural history lecture with Tony Soper, British science through the ages, bridge tuition, classical piano concerts, art tuition, craft, ballroom dancing lessons, line dancing and art auctions so boredom is not a word that is recognised on cruises of this type.

Royal Caribbean’s Adventure of the Seas, which has sailed year-round from San Juan since it launched in 2001, is to reposition to Malaga in Spain, for five months in 2010. As revealed at the FITUR tourism fair in Madrid last month, the Voyager-class ship will offer 25 five and seven-night Mediterranean itineraries between June and November next year.

As Seabourn Cruise Line prepares to expand its fleet (Seabourn Odyssey launches this June, and Seabourn Sojourn debuts next year), it has also spread out across the globe in terms of itineraries. The luxury line has announced a year-round Asia cruise programme starting in 2010. Seabourn Pride will be based solely

in Asia for all of 2010 and during early 2011, offering cruises to China, Japan, Korea, Thailand, Singapore and Vietnam. Seabourn Spirit will join Pride for a series of itineraries taking in Australia, Malaysia and Indonesia in late 2010 and early 2011 after repositioning to Asia from Europe in November 2010.

Since July last year, new regulations have meant that passengers must check in no later than 90 minutes prior to departure. The 90-minute cutoff was instigated so that cruise ships had time to send US Customs and Boarder Protection (CBP) the ship’s manifest (a list of all passengers on board), for review and get the ship cleared for departure.

d r e a m h o m e DI Y Robert had to fit doors to the utility room and bedroom before creating all that mess. Dinah got on with grouting tiles, painting walls and varnishing doors. The doors kept the worst of the dust out of the bedroom, but not, alas the temporary kitchen. Our neighbours murmured sympathetically about “mucho polvo� (dust) when they came around with their gifts of fruit and vegetables. We have invented a whole range of culinary delights; steak al polvo, chicken al polvo, polvo curry, polvo paella, sausage, egg and polvo and polvo sandwiches, which are very similar to the sandwiches you eat on the beach, but slightly less gritty!

The finishing touches to the small bathroom included a shelf unit from Leroy Merlin and a proper pull cord light switch brought over from the UK.

Dinah’s DIY tip If you have a brush which has been used for gloss paint or varnish, you don’t need to clean it every time you have finished with it. If you are going to use it again for the same paint or varnish, just wrap it tightly in cling film.

Mazda has never been very present in the compact car market, but the Mazda2 has an advantage in this crowded category with its low weight and sporty styling.

This Mazda is unusual as it counters the trend which sees cars getting bigger and heavier each time they’re updated. This new version is not only smaller than its predecessor but lighter by almost 100kg. That may not sound much, but it’s a major achievement in a car that’s safer than before, and which carries more equipment. The benefits of lower weight are reduced fuel consumption and emissions plus improved performance, which in turn are great for your bank account and for the planet too.

Despite being smaller, the new Mazda2 offers more interior room than the previous model, three or five

door options, and it also scores five NCAP stars for occupant protection.

lowered and the steering wheel is adjusted to suit, but we did find the seat length quite short. All seats have adjustable headrests and the rear is fairly spacious.

The boot is well sized and the cargo area is instantly increased when the 60/40 split rear seats are folded down. The Mazda2 is supplied with a spacesaver spare wheel of the get-you-home variety. Innovative, practical storage is carefully presented throughout the car with large door pockets, multiple cup holders and a rather strange magazine rack on the front of the glovebox. To save space, the gear lever extends

from the centre front console, leaving plenty of space between the front seats.

We drove the 1.3 litre Active Plus. On the road the Mazda2 is responsive, doesn’t roll much and is easy to drive briskly, making for a reasonably entertaining drive on a twisty road. The positive yet sensitive electric power steering, unusually for these systems, offers a slightly looser feel than others of this type with reassuring feedback from the front wheels. There is plenty of room in the front, and excellent cruising refinement and comfortable seats make this a better long-distance car than you might expect, and despite the fact that the ride is fairly firm it’s pretty good overall and it does iron out the bumps.

There is a great all round view from the driver’s position, helped by the presence of large door mirrors and a good rake to the windscreen and bonnet.

This car feels tightly assembled, and its interior appears robust. Though the dashboard is entirely made from hard-surfaced plastics, its appearance is of acceptable quality - good enough that you don’t feel you’re driving a budget car. The 1.3 litre engine didn’t startle us, despite the Mazda’s lower weight, but ours was quiet with a fair amount of acceleration for its size. It’s certainly not slow.

Servicing costs should be low, as are its insurance groupings. Mazdas have the reputation of being

exceptionally reliable, their pricing is competitive, and the standard equipment on the Mazda2 is slightly more generous than is usual for the money.

Mazda deserves praise for building a smaller, lighter car when most other manufacturers are moving in the opposite direction. The Mazda2 has first class safety features plus ISOFIX child seat fixing points, so peace of mind is assured. It is more than 95 per cent recyclable - a good figure. Toluene use during manufacture has been reduced by 60 per cent and cadmium, mercury and chromium have been completely eliminated from its components.

All in all the Mazda2 is a brilliant little package and it’s difficult to find any faults with this not so little sporty and compact car, which must be why it was voted World Car of the Year 2008.

It is excellent value for money with prices starting at 11,600 euros (with metallic paint at an extra cost).

This stylish and tasteful restaurant is hidden at the end of a narrow lane leading to the Las Carabelas apartments in San Eugenio Bajo with car parking nearby. It is well worth seeking out, whether for a lunchtime or an evening meal.

Hugo and Mei Mei opened China Town 18 years ago, and specialise in cuisine typical of south-west China.

The Frontos Winery follows the model of the French Chateau, with its own vineyards and controlled productions of wine of the highest quality. Frontos produce young wines, vintage wines and sweet malvasia wines. Their wines are made with the traditional grape varieties of Tenerife.

Heide Marie Fahle exhibition The artist Heide Fahle presented 32 of her latest works at her third exhibition entitled Rumours of Colour at the Museo de Pescadores (Fishermens’ Museum) in Puerto de Santiago on Friday 6th February 2009. The exhibition was officially opened by the museum’s director, José Francisco Morales, and the Alcalde of Santiago del Teide, Juan Gorrín accompanied by María Candelaria Pérez, councillor for culture. This was followed by a group of Canarian folklore musicians who entertained the guests with traditional songs and music.

The Museo de Pescadores in Puerto de Santiago

Heide was born in Germany, came to Tenerife in 1970 and has resided here since. She studied Fine Art in Berlin, then studied with Vicki Penfold in Tenerife in 1988, and has completed various other courses in art schools including the Academy of Art in Salzburg and St Martin’s College in London.

She makes impressionistic paintings using oils, egg tempura, watercolour, and acrylic colours. Her subjects are flowers, landscapes and nudes, with some of the work displaying an interplay of layers to create a fantasy world where reality and dreams seem to

Bougainvilla

Following the recent bout of wet and windy weather, do not be surprised if your bougainvilla has lost all its flowers and leaves, and is looking pretty sick. But don’t despair! Your plant will most probably be full of new leaves and flowers in a matter of weeks.

Bougainvilla is an extremely colourful tropical vine, with spiny, cascading stems which end with colourful bracts of red, orange, purple or white which hide small insignificant white flowers. You can buy the cascading variety or a more compact and bushy type whose flowers form plumes of colour. It originates from

the coastal areas of Brazil where it was discovered in the 1760s by a French botanist who named it after a Canadian friend. It has become very popular used as hedges, on trellises, or in hanging baskets and can be grown in the garden or in containers on your terrace, giving you lots of colour and privacy You can even train them to grow as trees.

Bougainvilla likes most types of well drained and fertile soil. Keep the soil moist, as they do not like to dry out, but on no account stand the container in water.

A healthy plant will consume lots of water during the summer months and much less during the winter.

The Iberian peninsula has been producing pottery from Neolithic and Roman times to the present and the Canarian natives, the Guanches also left behind a rich legacy of pottery. Through various courses beginning in 1984, Fabián has studied all over Spain and here in the islands learning to dominate the art of making ceramics using moulds, turntable, hand modelling and using the rolled sausage method of the Guanches.

He began working in the Canarian Hands Ceramic Workshop in Playa de las Américas in the summer of 1987 for two years, moving to the Leo Rancel Ceramic workshop in Ten-Bel then Valle San Lorenzo between 1989 and 1992 before creating his own workshop, Adjona in Arico Viejo. In 2000 he started combining his own workshop work with a job at a locksmith’s workshop in Granadilla for two years with the intention of combining both techniques in the future, but from 2002 he has dedicated himself full time to his own workshop at Calle La Degollada, 10 in the old town.

He runs his own classes too and has organised courses in conjunction with the specialised ceramics school of Puerto de la Cruz.

His bread and butter work is for small gift items, many of which are decorated with Guanche symbols, he also makes some picturesque hand crafted crib figures, large and small plaques and bowls, coffee and tea sets, candle holders, jugs and vases of all sizes and shapes and made to order pieces for your home or business.

His designs and artistry have also captured the imagination of architects and his talent has been employed in decorating buildings such as the Hotel Anthelia Park in Playa de las Américas.

He designed and executed a tropical forest with a Canarian sea view background using the ‘dry cord’ method, a technique which originated in southern Spain in the 15th century. The design is first drawn on fired clay with a special crayon made of manganese mixed with oil or wax. The different colours of glaze are then painted on between these crayoned lines to create an effect that mimics mosaic.

The crayon prevents the colours running together during firing. Rather like batik but with ceramics.

Originally used for making geometrical designs to decorate the walls and floors of buildings, this technique created a freedom of design that eventually

The home in comfortable suburbia, the comfortable car, the comfort of respect engendered by the big job and fat pay-check. Comfort or anaesthesia, life was slipping away. From self-conscious, dyslexic, artloving, style-monger to hard-bitten go-getting, selfassured bastard in just a few years. That’s no way to develop. The soul screams: “you’re wasting your true self, letting yourself down. You’ll never find what you’re looking for in this mire.”

I’m leaning into the wind on the headland, toes curled over the edge, arms outstretched. I wonder: Is it time to fall in silence, through purifying space, or to jump far into the darkness? Perhaps I can fly. Riding the updrafts into the evening sun. Close your eyes and empty your mind. The time has come.

A deserted beach, barefoot in cooling sand; a minute figure in the vast landscape. The cliffs cast deep indigo shadows. So this is it. Inside. Tapping the essence of life and putting all else in its place. “Looking for

Pam

Pam arrives with her newly acquired zimmer frame, chauffeured by her daughter in the familiar aging Golf. She sets her good leg on the gravel in the crisp sunshine of our first spring day, and levers her body to near vertical, her centre of gravity somewhere between her legs and the frame. She greets me in her precise Queen’s English, despite 45 years in Ireland, grips her handbag and tools firmly, and shuffles towards the pottery door.

She is still alive, still a force in her surroundings.

Her fine white hair is set and her lipstick just so, a statement of the greatest importance.

She exudes the joy she feels at finally being able to leave the bungalow to return to her class, after her spell in the geriatric ward, and MRSA which nearly carried her off. Five years without fail she’s been coming to the Thursday morning workshop, the longest standing student, always seated in the most comfortable chair by the heater. And as she settles into her new project – an elephant, her life rolls away behind her, hills in shades of green and brown, rich valleys and streams, the war, marriage, careers, children, grandchildren, accolades and achievements all woven into her regal train.

To the others, it’s just a morning class, but for Pam it’s a statement of vitality, a measure of existence.

She’s sculpted cats and dogs, stallions and donkeys, portraits of the family, gifts and treasures, struggling to make best use of her arthritic fingers and fading concentration. But in each small piece is a gift of her life-force, an attachment which holds her from her inevitable end.

I sometimes question whether I have run my course with teaching, but then I think of Pam and I have no need to question why I do this.

Just like Sudoku you must fit digits into a grid of squares so that no digit is repeated within a row or column, but unlike Sudoku the 3x3 squares are replaced with greater-than and less-than symbols. The numbers 1 to 5 must fit into the 5x5 grid so that no number is repeated in a row or column, and so that the inequality (greater-than and less-than) signs are obeyed.
