Easter Easter week, known as Semana Santa, is celebrated in the Canary Islands from Palm Sunday, which is April 5th, to Easter Sunday on the 12th and is the most important religious festival of the year. The bank holidays are on Maundy Thursday and Good Friday. Easter is celebrated all over the islands, notably in La Laguna, Adeje, Güímar, Garachico, Los Realejos, La Orotava, Puerto de la Cruz, Candelaria and Granadilla in Tenerife, in Las Palmas, Terór, Gáldar and Playa del Inglés in Gran Canaria and Santa Cruz de La Palma. The Holy Week presents you with some of the most stunning religious and cultural acts as the people of the Canaries celebrate with fervour, costumes and colour. On Maundy Thursday, most churches
and chapels are opened to the public to view the Eucharistic figures, which have been crafted over the years. There are processions in most major towns, with statues of incalculable historical and artistic value being carried, especially on Easter Thursday and Good Friday when you can see the Magna and Silent processions. The most notable of these is La Laguna with formal processions taking place all week which are said to be the most traditional in all the Canary Islands. In addition to these religious processions, some towns have also developed a tradition for the staging of Passion plays in the street, and in the south of Tenerife, Adeje is worthy of a visit. This is a highly professional production performed by more than 300 actors, most of them amateur. The stages are set all along the Calle Grande and great effort is put into this annual event which takes you from the Last Supper to the Crucifixion. The standard of the individual stage sets and costumes is nothing short of amazing and gets better each year. The real thing begins at midday on Good Friday and lasts for approximately two hours. You will need to arrive early in order to secure a parking place and a good vantage point.

Tonight’s the night
The night Rod Stewart fans have been waiting for is actually May 16th, when one of the world’s best known rockers will play to thousands in Golf Costa Adeje, in Tenerife. This is the second in the Sun Live series of concerts bringing international stars to the islands – the first was the mega Elton John concert last year, and tickets are now on sale through a variety of outlets, including the Island Connections site, www.islandconnections.eu. It’s almost impossible to encapsulate the life and times of Rod Stewart into a few short words. The man from London whose musical career spans five decades, with
hits that are classics in their own right, has merit not just as a singer and performer but also as a songwriter of incredible talent and a great showman to boot. His flamboyant lifestyle has also been highlighted by his liaisons with a series of attractive women. He has been married three times – currently to Penny Lancaster-Stewart and fathered seven children, the first, Sarah Thubron Streeter, born in 1964, and the youngest, Alastair Wallace Stewart, in 2005. He is also well known for his love of football and is a fervent follower of the Scottish national side. Whether we can persuade him to travel to Santa Cruz to see a CD Tenerife game is still unclear – the side do, after all, share the same flag as Scotland, so who knows. Rod, the box is already booked! This is not, by any means, Stewart’s first visit to Spain – in fact he was arrested for vagrancy in Spain for illegal busking in the early 60’s, but it is his first concert in Tenerife. And though he might not break his own record – he played to the largest concert crowd ever, with 3.5 million fans in attendance at Copacabana Beach in Rio de Janeiro for the 1994 New Year’s Eve celebrations, thousands will be there to celebrate an incredible concert.

Around the world on a cruise ship For the last three days Aurora has been at sea on a northwesterly course heading towards San Francisco. It is sunny with a light wind across the decks. As you can imagine, most of the passengers on a world cruise look forward to days at sea, it’s a great chance to catch up on a little sunbathing and to try and finish that novel that they brought on board, also to send and receive emails and write letters to those on dry land.

One of the great benefits of sea days is attending the many activities which are available. Most good quality cruise lines arrange a wonderful programme of events to suit all ages and pursuits. I am surprised how many people think that on a world cruise that they will become bored with nothing to occupy their time. Some people go on these cruises to get away from it all and in fact you will very rarely see them as they prefer to stay in their cabins or sit and read in an cosy corner.

However if you are sport minded and want to be active the list is never ending. You can have a morning stretch in the gymnasium, social tennis, pilates for beginners, line dancing, quoits competition, table tennis, shuffleboard, aqua aerobics, to cricket and golf practice, plus a whole host of other body demanding activities. For the more relaxed life there are handicrafts, painting lessons, ice vegetable fruit carving and cooking demonstrations, bingo, quizzes, whist drives, bridge classes and a whole raft of places to go to be pampered - massage rooms, hairdressers, make up demonstrations (for women), champagne bars, sport bars, a fully equipped library, computer room and photographic demonstrations. Then there are the various official parties like the Captain’s cocktail evening and the unofficial parties that you get invited to, or you may decide to throw your own party in your cabin. Just ask your cabin steward and whatever you want will be provided. Afterwards whilst you’re at dinner or a show, your cabin will be cleared of all debris and left neat and tidy. Each cruise invites some of the best entertainers in the world from comedy to musical, dance to vocal. The ship will also have its own musical groups that play at different locations around the vessel. If you like the theatre, the on board theatre company performs shows which have appeared on Broadway and in London. Don’t forget you also have a fully equipped casino, a fantastic selection of in cabin viewing and there is also a cinema showing some of the latest and newly released films. Some of the finest lecturers you could hope to listen to cover every topic and subject you could imagine. Bored? Don’t even think about it. Eating and drinking is also an important part of your cruise and most good cruise lines take this very seriously. Just to give you an idea of the sort of quantities that a ship like Aurora would have to take on board for an 80 day world cruise, how about 28 tons of beef, 45 tons of poultry,

Robert’s step by step guide to hanging a door 1. Measure the width and height of the door and frame. The door will normally be slightly bigger than the frame.
5. Place the door back to the frame. It should be a tight fit. Lightly mark the hinges on door and frame, using a sharp but soft pencil. They should be fitted about 1ft. (30cm) from the top and bottom edge. You may need a third hinge if the door is solid wood.
2. Where you trim depends on the style of the door. For example, a flush panel door should be trimmed by the same amount either side. Likewise for the top and bottom. 3. Offer the door up to the frame. Use wooden wedges to level the door. Make sure it is straight by checking with a spirit level. A 5mm gap is required at the bottom of the door. Mark a line for trimming on the hinge side of the door. You also need to mark a line on the top, bottom or both, depending on the type of door and the amount of trimming that’s needed. Make sure you don’t trim off too much at this point.
4. Trim the door, using a planer. If you are using an electric planer, be warned they are very messy!
6. Take the door away and using the hinge as a template, mark on the frame where it needs to be fitted. Then cut a rebate on the door and the frame with a sharp chisel.

7. Attach the hinges to the door and frame. You will find the wedges useful for holding the door in position.

d r e a m h o m e DI Y 9. Refix the door. Mark the height of the handle and latch. I fix mine at one metre high, but I am 6ft 6in tall! Mark the centre of the edge where the latch is to be fitted. Wedge the door open and with an appropriate sized drill, drill a hole for the latch. Care must be taken that the drill goes in straight and level. Mark the drill bit with a piece of tape to the depth you need. 10. Insert latch into hole, mark on the door where the rebate needs to go for the latch. Using a chisel, cut out to the depth required. 11. Mark on both sides of the door, the position of the spindle for the handle. It is better to drill from both sides, rather than straight through the door. Fit latch and handles, making sure that the latch is the right way around. 8. Attempt to close the door. It will probably not fit. Now mark the door for the final trim. Remove the door, bearing in mind when trimming that the leading edge needs to be trimmed about 2mm extra so that it doesn’t catch on the frame. Use the plane as before.

12. Open and close the door several times, without using the handle. This will give you the position of the latch strike plate. Put against frame, mark the position and cut out with a chisel. Fit into position and the door is now hung!

While Robert continues to remove the damaged roof, Dinah has finished the destruction of the old water tank and the sloping pipe which came out of it. It’s good to know that there has been some progress in the last decade or so. There is now an excellent mains water supply to the property so there is no need to store water. Some of the rubble has been used to raise the level of the courtyard. This is because the whole property is below the level of the road and when it rains, the
house will flood! There are no drains or ditches of any kind to carry the water away. By the end of September, all of the roof had gone. The last chunks were broken up and carted off to the skip. taking account of the coupé styling, plenty of headroom too. The centre back seat really is for occasional use only but a chunky armrest pulls down in its place. The volume of the luggage compartment is impressive at 500 to 1,465 litres, and includes a lockable ski-hatch opening (not available on Essencia model) in the rear seat-back for load-through storage and 60/40 split rear seats. As the bootlid is not of the hatchback variety, you are restricted as to the actual size of items you can load through the gap under the rear windscreen. The spare wheel is a spacesaver. We drove the 2-litre CDTI Ecotec 160hp Sport model. This is an extremely smart and classy vehicle. The driver’s seat can be adjusted backwards and forwards, up and down, for rake and lumbar support, plus the seat can be extended to suit the driver’s leg length. We did find it a bit narrow for anyone with a broad rib cage and the passenger seat only benefits from basic adjustments. There is plenty of storage space, including a spacious refrigerated glove box, door pockets and a central armrest which hides another storage box with grippy drinks holders. The foldable ignition key starts the car conventionally from the steering column. The instrument panel is clear while the computer system gives the driver the usual information, plus exactly how many litres of oil are in the engine. You can even see on which side of the car the petrol filler is located. On the move, the steering is incredibly light and sensitive while all-round vision is good as long as you use the large door mirrors. This car has oodles of acceleration and the gearbox is easy to handle. In top (6th) gear, we achieved 120kph at only 2,000rpm. Excellent soundproofing gives a comfortable and quiet ride. Bumps are nicely ironed out by the low profile suspension and tyres. There is plenty of legroom in the rear and surprisingly,

The Frontos Winery follows the model of the French Chateau, with its own vineyards and controlled productions of wine of the highest quality. Frontos produce young wines, vintage wines and sweet malvasia wines. Their wines are made with the traditional grape varieties of Tenerife.

Annual benefit tournament This year’s annual benefit golf tournament will take place on Friday May 1st at Golf Costa Adeje. Usually some 80 to 100 players participate, with their green fees going to charity. Additional funds are raised with sponsorship donations. The money raised goes to local charities in the south of Tenerife, for example Asociación San Juan, a day centre in Adeje attending to the special therapy needs of some 30 adults and 40 children with a programme for reintegration within society; Amisur, a day centre in Cabo Blanco for young people with certain deficiencies which helps them to obtain work; Orobal in Los Cristianos, an association of parents of mentally handicapped children; Hermanos de Cruz Blanca in Las Chafiras, a centre organised by monks for some 30 male residents with deficiencies and handicaps, and Parroquia Santa Isabel in El Fraile, a day centre for young people, getting them off the streets and back on track. Rotarians are professional people who help out where local authorities have insufficient social workers to deal with the problems of handicapped or socially deficient children or adults. The Hotel Sheraton La Caleta transformed its gardens on 15th March to host the exclusive Cásate Conmigo bridal fair which gave visitors the opportunity to see the latest designs in wedding dresses during several fashion shows, watch cooking demonstrations given by the hotel’s chef, admire demonstrations of bridal hairstyling and enjoy live entertainment. There were also demonstrations of banquet layouts so that bridesto-be could visualise the various possibilities for their own special day. 200 people who attended entered into a draw for stays at the hotel, a wedding dress, jewellery, accessories and spa treatments. Gregory de Clerck, the hotel’s general director was pleased with the success of this fair and said he was sure there would be a second edition in the future. The fair’s success was made possible with the support of the many sponsors which included Ideal Jewellers and Tenerife Pearl.

Strelitzia
There is something quite unreal about the Strelitzia which encompasses a genus of five species of perenniel plants native to South Africa. They are named after the duchy of Mecklenburg-Strelitz which was the birthplace of Queen Charlotte of the United Kingdom. It is often referred to as the bird of paradise flower, and in South Africa it is known as a crane flower. The leaves are large, somewhat resembling those of a banana plant but longer and more pointed, and the flowers emerge from a stout spathe which sunbirds perch on when they visit to pollinate the plants. The Strelitzia should really be renamed the patience

plant, as you will read in most specialist books that it will not produce any flowers until it is several years old. Your plant should be watered thoroughly and then left to almost dry out before watering again. They do not like being over-watered and in the winter months the soil should be nearly bone dry before watering. When new growth begins in the spring, they should be given phostrogen plant food once every two weeks. Ideal for gardens or big terrace pots, Strelitzia needs as much sunlight and fresh air as possible during the summer, and should be fed once a week to encourage new leaf growth and flower spikes. The flowers take a few months to grow to full size and then take a

because its roots will try to stretch the pot wider, or you may see a thick tap root pushing its way through the bottom of the pot. Do not be tempted to put your strelitzia in an expensive pot as you may have to break it to remove the plant. It does very well in a loam based compost with grit, picon or bark chippings to aid good drainage.

Yo ho ho! One of the first crops introduced to the Islands by the Spanish conquerors was sugar cane. It was cuttings from the Canaries that were transported to the Caribbean and South America to found their famous plantations. From 1984 wide-scale cane planting ceased, but the Islands’ famous rum distilleries live on.

At Distilerías San Bartolomé, the sugar cane was once brought in and spread all over the patio before being chopped, loaded into hoppers, triple pressed and finally the resultant liquid ‘guarapo’ was distilled to make the sugar alcohol eau de vie which forms the base for the company’s products. The old equipment including the steam engine is still installed in the original 1948 building. The company search out the best ingredients in the world to make sure their end product is the best. Sugar alcohol arrives from South America and South Africa, sugar from Germany and Brazil, oak chips and barrels from America. which may include toasted American oak chips before being blended with some of the alcohol stored in the barrels to secret recipes to make the final rum or liqueur. The resultant liquid goes to a high powered filter containing 23 different sheets of cellulose before storage in further vats to complete the aging process before being bottled. Modern manufacturing methods have been almost completely automated and the factory can produce 8,500 bottles an hour. The plant is spotlessly clean with a sealed production line to ensure hygiene. Bottles arrive on pallets fully wrapped but are still cleaned with high pressure water jets then dried thoroughly to ensure the product is not compromised and that the label will stick properly. Stainless steel tubes and a simple and fully automated system of vents and valves move the liquid from place to place and the plant’s production manager, Don José, proudly told us that each ingredient is fully traceable and the manufacturing process has achieved ISO 9000 status. From the batch number of any of their drinks, the company can tell you exactly when and where the sugar, bananas, honey etc. were made. Clever sensors control the quality and quantity of each bottle produced and they even include an anti-theft chip in each item. Batch numbers are printed on each

How to play Sudoku The aim of the puzzle is to enter a numeral from 1 through 9 in each cell of a grid, starting with various numerals given in some cells -the ‘givens’. Each row, column and 3x3 block must contain only one instance of each numeral.

How to play Futoshiki Just like Sudoku you must fit digits into a grid of squares so that no digit is repeated within a row or column, but unlike Sudoku the 3x3 squares are replaced with greater-than and less-than symbols. The numbers 1 to 5 must fit into the 5x5 grid so that no number is repeated in a row or column, and so that the inequality (greater-than and less-than) signs are obeyed.
