Are we living on borrowed time? Only time itself will tell, if that’s not too easy an answer. Both here and back in many of our countries of origin the dreaded Swine Flu doesn’t seem to have caused the widespread shut downs of schools, colleges and businesses we were expecting – or maybe that we were led to believe. The media can bear some of the responsibility for giving this flu the kind of coverage that any politician would give all of their eye teeth and those of their family for, but the less sensationalist press were only publishing the news and guidelines as fed to them by local, national and internationally recognised health bodies. And what it has meant is that people are aware of the presence of the virus and preventative measures that need to be taken. All that being said, things could still get worse before they get better! It will be interesting to look back in hindsight and see what effect the use of mass media and the presence of, for example, the internet, has had in spreading the right kind of news – for instance vigilance when washing hands, sneezing, taking extra care of children and the more vulnerable, etc – has had on the spread of this flu, and whether there have been less deaths than predicted. Hopefully the answer will be a positive one. In the meantime, even though we are living in the warmer climes of Tenerife, we too are approaching winter, with drops in temperatures, especially at night time. So take care, and make the adjustments necessary. Talk to your medical providers about any extra precautions you may wish to take – seasonal flu jabs are already available here in the Canary Islands – and look after yourselves.

Fiestas de San Andrés November 29th
Roll out the barrel on 29th November for the fiestas of San Andrés which are held in several towns in Tenerife, including Igueste de San Andrés, close to Playa de las Teresitas in Santa Cruz. This is when the local wineries open to taste the year’s new wine which in Icod de los Vinos is accompanied by roast chestnuts and salted fish, and includes the ritual of Las Tablas (the boards), in which young people slide down the steep streets at breakneck speeds on greased boards. Scholars indicate that on the eve of St Andrew’s Day, the owners needed to clean the
barrels where the new wine would be stored. Until the early twentieth century they used salt water, so the barrels were rolled down to the coast, producing a tremendous noise which was a precursor to the opening of the wine cellars to the sound of traditional folk songs called Isas, folías and malagueñas. San Andrés is also celebrated in other towns including Puerto de la Cruz, La Orotava, Icod de los Vinos, Fasnia, Candelaria and Arona.

luxury gifts
A MOUAGE luxury from arabian nights For thousands of years, the arabian world has dominated the art of beguiling the senses with the most aromatic fragrances in the world. In the Sultanate of oman the royal Family has brought this art to perfection over the last 25 years. amouage, the perfume of the royals, could also be called the oldest Christmas present in the world. the three holy kings, who came from oman, brought gold, myrrh and frankincense from the precious boswellia Sacra tree to the new born Jesus - ingredients which even today remain the secret of this perfume. It is produced with pure natural essences, everything completely handmade from the beginning. The exotic fragrance from the Royal Family is now considered the national perfume of Oman where it is a classic wedding present which has a deep tradition, even in poorer families, and is regarded as essential. It is now distributed all around the world, always in the most exclusive perfumeries. For the first time it can now be found in Tenerife, in the Xazzperfumeria in Puerto de la Cruz. The name Amouage is created by the Arabian word ‘amwaj’ (wave) and the French word ‘amour’. Waves of motion, this describes exactly what you feel,

according to Juha Erik Turunen who describes his product with a deep passion, you smell the fragrances and listen to the Arabian music in the background. Since 1994, the British General Director David Crickmore has managed the transformation of a classic essence to an exclusive brand name. It now appears in a modern, elegant design with 14 different fragrances for women and men. As well as these, there are classy soaps, exquisite home fragrances, Arabian incense, aromatic candles and an exclusive body care line. Amouage represents a royal lifestyle combined with the magic of Arabian nights – a really exquisite Christmas present, which is after all the oldest one in the world, appreciated by the Holy Kings.

The bed should be placed with its head against a wall
During my Feng Shui consultations the bedroom always gets a great amount of attention. It is the most used room in the house, even though we don‘t do a lot in there. But the main purpose is to relax and let your body recover from its daily work, while we have a good night‘s sleep. If we can‘t sleep well, our days are not as vivid as they could be. Kids who can‘t concentrate at school, adults in a bad mood and possibly headaches are quite common, if our resting time cannot give the body what it needs. You definitely know that something is wrong when you start taking pills to calm down. While there are many reasons for sleeping problems, one thing should always be considered: the environment of the bed is the base of a good night‘s rest.
What you don‘t need in a bedroom In my Feng Shui consultations, I had the chance to see a lot of different bedrooms. Often I was under the impression that the inhabitants didn‘t have another room. Stuff like telephones, TV, video, stereos and so on turned the bedroom into a multifunctional place. Good for everything else, but not for sleeping. Beside some lights, there shouldn‘t be any electrical devices in the bedroom. You can‘t watch TV while you sleep and having a mobile on the bedside table is not a good idea either. Mobile phones turned into a ‘must have‘ device and cover many 14
needs. Listening to music, taking pictures and setting the alarm are only some aspects of it. The latter is one reason why some people put their mobiles on the bedside table. The electric magnetic field of a mobile phone (the same is true for a cordless landline phone) can disturb the sensitive body‘s electric magnetic field. Some people are more sensitive to this than others. But in any case it has an effect. So before we swallow sleeping pills we should make sure we avoid these radiations. Mirrors and reflecting objects like TVs are also to be avoided. Part of our brain is programmed to check our environment for potential danger. If we have a small and cosy bedroom, our subconscious has less to do while we are sleeping. Reflective surfaces like mirrors or televisions make the room seem bigger than it is.
Subconsciously we have to observe additional virtual rooms which do not exist. This puts unnecessary stress on our backs. Lights coming through the window will be doubled like everything else and our subconscious won‘t get a proper rest. If you won‘t remove mirrors, TVs etc. from your bedroom, simply put something over them while you sleep.
The proper place for a bed In the bedroom the bed should have the head part against a wall. Never put a bed under a window. It should be possible to overlook windows and doors from the bed, so that the subconscious is more relieved during the sleeping phase. Doors should open in a way that you can‘t see the bed right away if you open the door. That gives you more time to react if somebody were to come in, and again november 2009
lifestyle
It is important to use calming colours in the bedroom
our subconscious will be less stressed. Also avoid sleeping under beams. Something big hanging above our bodies while we are sleeping is another thing that keeps our subconscious busy. Get rid of everything that doesn‘t belong to a bedroom and think about the best position for the bed before you take other aspects into account.
Colours Everybody is different and choosing colours is an individual task. But there are some colours that are generally better for a bedroom than others. During a proper Feng Shui consultation, I always check the client‘s constellation to find out the right colours. For this article I can obviously only revere to some calming colours that support relaxing and regenerating. Yellow and brown colours are in most cases
the magazine
a good idea for a bedroom. They are considered as earth colours and give us a certain stability and security. White, grey or silver can be a good idea, if you have problems getting up in the morning. As I said, colours are different for every person, but you can‘t really go wrong with these suggestions.
If you watch a programme in the living room before bedtime, this is much healthier. The time needed for switching off the TV, going to the bathroom, brushing the teeth and changing, gives us a break to calm down. If you can‘t sleep, some light reading might be a good way of getting tired.
Before you go to sleep One of the main reasons for a TV in the bedroom is the habit of watching programmes right before we go to sleep. If you want to be manipulated that is the best way to do it. If we are half asleep and watch programmes with commercials, the message really can sink in. Beside that, our subconscious is always awake and needs extra capacity to filter this information coming from the TV. Have a TV break before you go to bed!

Honda
Civic Type S 2009 The Honda Civic has been around in various shapes and forms since the seventies. Nowadays, it is one of the most stylish midsized cars on the market, manufactured at Honda’s factory in Swindon, UK (in operation for 17 years) where 3,400 workers make 300 cars a day, supplying a global market. For the driver who is looking for a classy, but not too expensive car which is powerful, equipped to a luxury standard, has the passion of Italian design and which with due care and regular servi-
cing is likely to last in excess of 15 years, the Civic Type S is for you. We drove the 1.8 litre petrol engine version with a six-speed manual gearbox. Also available with a 2.2-litre diesel engine, the car is supplied with a conventional remote entry key, which must be inserted and turned to the contact position before using the push-button start. It is extremely spacious inside, seating a maximum of five. The front seats adjust backwards and forwards, and recline fully. The driver’s seat can be raised or lowered and this, together with the tilt and telescopic steering wheel adjustment, means you can find the ideal driving position. The climate control has a great range and in dual mode, the front seat passenger can select the desired temperature from a control on the door. High class upholstery, brushed aluminium trims, sporty aluminium pedals and footrest, and a leather steering wheel with remote controls for the CD/RDS radio system make for comfortable driving while the easy to read multiple information display tells you everything you need to know as it teaches you to drive economically. you know of anything that needs attention. All controls are close to hand and intuitive, including electrically adjustable and retractable door mirrors, and the bonnet and fuel cap release. Ample storage space inside includes the central armrest, door pockets, and a large refrigerated glove box. There are plenty of drinks holders in both the back and the front, plus grab handles and a coat hook. Honda are experts at rear seats which fold down in a 60:40 format to create more loading space. 28
In this case, the boot capacity of 485 litres increases to a massive 1,352 litres. This extra space has been created by an ingenuous relocation of the fuel tank which is now further forward in the car. An emergency spare wheel is optional, and other equipment such as the jack and spare sets of bulbs, can be stowed in neat cubbyholes. There is also a 12 volt power outlet and anchoring points in the boot. The large hatch-style opening makes loading easy. november 2009

A compact but powerful engine far right: The multi-functional information display tells you all you need to know
The Honda Civic Type S has the most fast-acting automatic lights and windscreen wipers we have ever come across, a spot of rain and the wipers are in action, and as you enter a tunnel the lights come on, leaving you with nothing to worry about except enjoying the drive. Equipped with Vehicle Stability Assist, Anti-Locking Brakes and Electronic Brake Force Distribution, this vehicle which sits down low, hugs the road, brakes smoothly, is quiet and smooth, and gives a feeling of safety. The firm sports suspension is standard, and the car has disc brakes all round.
Under the bonnet everything is really compact, but what stands out is the easy accessibility of the battery and items which need to be checked. The Honda Civic Type S is unique, the car attracts admiring glances, and first time passengers remark that it resembles a spaceship inside. You guessed. I liked the car so much that I bought it. If you would like to find out more, or take one for a test drive, go to www.honda.es, or visit your local Honda dealer, Aucasa in Los Majuelos or Las Chafiras where excellent service is assured.

The Porsche Panamera What does the name of this car inspire? If it makes you think of a suave, luxury, low and sleek vehicle packed with power, then you would be correct. Alhambra del Duque take a trip downstairs at the Centro Comercial paris next to the playa del Duque. Step into the restaurant alhambra del Duque and you will think that you’ve been transported to an exotic North african or middle eastern location. Mustafa from Morocco has been in Tenerife for ten years and two years ago he opened the restaurant. He has decorated the dining area with an eclectic mix of colourful Arabian
paintings, ceramics, and artefacts. Overhead are hanging lanterns exuding warm subdued lighting, and Moorish designs in the tapestry on the walls complete the illusion. There is also a large chill-out area carpeted in Persian style rugs with leather pouffes scattered around large hammered brass tables decorated with tall ornate water pipes where you can relax with a cocktail before your meal. The kitchen works from three menus, making typical dishes from Morocco and Lebanon:

She will be accompanied by two more dancers for the winter season special dinner show. The dinner show runs from Monday until Thursday. 5 star Music review
Beselch Rodriguez In-diferente (Estudios Multitrack) Duende is one of those words which is almost impossible to describe in any language other than Spanish, but I’ll try to explain its essence. Duende is the feeling in which certain kinds of art, particularly music, move the soul. It’s the perfect imperfection of a flamenco guitar chord, the mortality of a live concert, the transparent expression which only a handful of musicians are gifted with. musicians such as beselch rodriguez. Born in La Laguna in 1984, at the age of twelve Beselch was given a timple as a Christmas present by his grandfather, and by 1998 was sharing the stage with many of the island’s folkloric groups. Ten years and many awards later, we find this twenty five year old with this incredibly individual debut album, which he incidentally composed and produced. Only three timplistas have successfully crossed the boundaries of traditional Canarian folk music to improvise jazz, pop and other genres with this small instrument of the guitar family, a centuries old hybrid of Mediterranean and Central American instruments. Benito Cabrera (featured in last month’s issue of The Magazine), José Antonio Ramos, the Gran Canarian innovator who sadly passed away in 2008, and Beselch Rodriguez. Listening to In-diferente, it is very apparent that this musician has the ability to take Canarian music outside of these islands with absolute integrity. Bossa and jazz enhanced with mesmerising timple solos. World percussion and lounge accompanied by Canarian rhythms. All with authentic, undeniable duende. Qfm’s select tracks;- amigo, No Name bossa, Interminable, currently on rotation at Qfm and www.Qmusica.com. The digital version of this album is free via www.beselchrodriguez.com

5 Star Music Review
Wayne Jones – Saturday Street (2009, D+D Records) At the age of eleven, Wayne Jones and his family left South Wales with the dream of a new life in Australia. In 1963, the only logistical route took six weeks aboard the SS Canberra, yet this voyage was to influence the youngster’s life and musical career. The onboard entertainment was a jazz quartet, and Wayne quickly became addicted to the swing. On arrival in his new homeland, he took up drumming, and passionately pursued and studied this discipline until the age of seventeen, when he discovered his passion for the bass guitar. The bass guitar is traditionally a passive rhythm section tool. Very few bass guitarists aspire to head groups, a few exceptions are Stanley Clarke, Marcus Miller and Mark King (Level 42). These legendary musicians take the instrument to the very centre of the song, with in-the-face slaps and funky chops. Saturday Street embraces this flavour in a very uplifting, palatable form where Wayne fuses pure technique with upfront melodies. The opening number, Strictly Dan, is a punchy homage to Steely Dan’s unique sound, and the final track, I’m In The Mood, features the warm vocals of Cheryl Beattie, the only vocals on the only ballad of the album. In between are ten funky instrumentals, each oozing positivity and style. The cast of supporting musicians is impressive to say the least, and in addition to the obvious genius of the author with his thirteen year old Status Graphite six string bass, James Sandon stands out with some incredibly arresting yet sublime sax solos and fills. Stop press: Wayne has now relocated to Barcelona where he is currently working on various studio and touring projects. Qfm’s selection;- Strictly Dan, Back In Five, Time Traveller. All tracks from this album are on rotation at Qfm and www.Qmusica.com, where the album is also available for mail order worldwide. 42

Around the world on a cruise ship by Gerald Ruben
I hope you all enjoyed our sail by Tin Can Island. However, now we have arrived in Auckland and as you can see as we sail in, Auckland is almost surrounded by water and volcanic hills, and you will soon see why Auckland has earned the nickname City of Sails.
The volcanic core of Rangitoto stands guard at the entrance. As the gateway to New Zealand, Auckland is a wonderful blend of colonial and cosmopolitan with a wealth of attractions to offer. Auckland is situated at the northern end of the North Island of New Zealand. This is the country’s largest city and entry port, it has a population of over one million and it is also the biggest Polynesian city in the world. The people who live here believe that if New Zealand is God’s own country then he would choose to live and work in Auckland. The earliest known settlement in the Auckland area was made by the native Maori tribes in about 1350AD. Since then of course, a lot has changed, but the Maori influence can be seen everywhere you go. There is just so much to see in this city and the surrounding countryside that you can only hope that your ship pays an overnight call. Within a 45 minute drive of Auckland you can experience unspoilt beaches, rural countryside and forests. Volcanoes are a distinctive feature, there are fourteen of them and all are classified dormant, not extinct. The last eruption 800 years ago created the majestic Auckland Harbour island of Rangitoto.

From there the Balmoral will sail across the Atlantic, arriving at the Titanic site on April 14th/15th,
exactly 100 years on from the tragic voyage, where a memorial service will be held to pay tribute to more than 1,500 passengers and crew who perished on that fateful night. The voyage will then continue to Halifax, Nova Scotia, the final resting place of many who were on board, before sailing on to New York, the Titanic’s ultimate planned destination. This is obviously a unique event and such is the interest in the 100th anniversary of the Titanic it is highly recommended that bookings be made as soon as possible. Nine cabin grades are already sold out, many to families of the victims. Prices vary from 2,595 pounds (more than 2,800 euros) to 7,995 pounds (nearly 8,700 euros).

Golf Pro Tip of the Month The pro tip of the month is about grip pressure. Most of the players I know, from scratch golfer to weekend golfer, struggle to grip the club with a soft even grip pressure throughout their swings. As a result the club face can’t rotate freely at impact with the subsequent loss of power and slice. Here I am over the ball where our arms and hands should feel relaxed.

I have now reached the top of the back swing, where my club glided there thanks to a soft, even grip pressure. Try to imagine that the club feels like a tube of toothpaste with no cap on.
Here we go! The transition, the most critical moment of the golf swing. Most golfers would now re-grip their clubs with tons of pressure, with fatal results in the trajectories of their shots. We should continue to maintain light and even grip pressure. An even grip pressure is the secret for power and balance. Let’s have a look at what happens when we achieve this.
Just perfect! The back of my left hand is facing the target. My hands are remaining passive through the impact which will deliver the intended trajectory and power. That’s because I was able to keep the toothpaste in the tube! Had my grip pressure increased coming down to the ball, this would have never been possible and I could not square up the club face to the target. Let’s have a look at what happens with the wrong grip pressure and position.
Oooooooopsss! May Day! May Day! Golf ball flying far right! And short distance! The toothpaste is being spread all over the deck. If I gripped my knife and fork this hard I would starve to death! Remember, grip it softly throughout your swing with an even grip pressure. Hit it high and watch it fly - there are no bunkers in the sky!

The New Big Bertha Diablo Driver 100% titanium for explosive power and distance with a wicked new attitude.
FREE HEAD C OVE R
Airmail your playing partners. That’s your first thought on the tee box. And the all-titanium Big Bertha Diablo Driver will help you do it, bringing wicked power and distance to go along with the generous sweet spot. Our new Edge Technology provides a high Moment of Inertia (MOI) and an optimised centre of gravity (CG) location for Draw or Neutral models, so you get long, penetrating ball flight with the shot shape you desire. Hyperbolic Face Technology in a titanium face cup increases ball speed across the entire face for more distance, even on miss-hits. Edge Technology also helps golfers square the club face at impact, especially when swinging aggressively. The Big Bertha Diablo Driver performs like no other all-titanium driver we’ve ever created. After all, long is good, but longer is better. So go ahead, knock the hell out of it.
hyperbolic Face technology Hyperbolic shaping is the cutting edge of driver face design. Mathematics and engineering combine to create Callaway’s highest ever ball speeds across the entire face.
edge technology The unique shaping of the all-titanium club heads allowed the engineers to move weight in specific locations to achieve the optimal CG location and ball flights for the Draw or Neutral options with a higher MOI. It also helps close the club face at impact so golfers can better release the club with power.
Draw and Neutral head Shapes Provides golfers with the opportunity to select a driver that will most benefit their swing type and promote their desired shot shape.
Big Bertha Diablo Golf Ball Straighter Distance, Softer Feel The results surprised even us. A golf ball this soft, and with this much feel, shouldn’t be able to go this far. The new High-Resiliency core is not only soft, but also fast, which means you’ll never sacrifice distance for soft feel. Plus, this golf ball’s unique low spin properties mean that players who impart too much spin off the driver will see more distance and less severe hooks and slices. The
Big Bertha Diablo Golf Ball offers lower driver spin and softer feel than most golf balls on the market for superior accuracy off the tee and better feel on every shot.
