Sometimes it’s hard to know what to say, and as we approach December 24th even more so. As we are made increasingly aware, whether it’s through news coverage regarding what head coverings young girls can wear in state schools in some European countries, or controversy when a customer complains that someone serving them is wearing a religious symbol around their neck, religion can be a thorny issue. Many of us do subscribe to some form of worship or a belief system, with varying degrees of commitment and attendance at services or ceremonies. And for most of us, living within the ambit of tolerance, we are happy to keep our religious beliefs to ourselves. That works for 363 days of the year, but on December 24th and 25th a large portion of the Western world celebrates the birth of Christ. The run up to that celebration, both commercial and sacred, is very public in many ways, and it’s virtually impossible to ignore. But not everyone sees the date as of significance, and that too has to be respected. In this day and age some personal restraint is no bad thing, and in many ways for a lot of people holidaying or living on Tenerife is about getting away from some of the mad consumerism in their old lives, and that includes Christmas. Taking all that as read we still want to wish all our readers and clients the best of the season, and hope that one and all enjoy this time of year, however they choose to spend it. And as most of us are working from the Gregorian calendar, we can safely wish you a Happy New Year.

Mamma Mia! December 28th to January 4th
The musical featuring the fabulous music of Abba and which has broken all records in terms of attendance, length
of run and tickets sold in Spain, hits the Sala Sinfónica of the Auditorio de Tenerife in Santa Cruz on December
28th and runs until January 4th during which there will be ten performances. Following the Tenerife run, the musical will move on to Las Palmas, from January 7th to 29th. The story on which it is based, of family and friendship, is enhanced by breathtaking costumes which will take you back to the days of Abba in the seventies and eighties, and of course their wonderfully catchy music. This is bound to be extremely popular and would make a wonderful Christmas or New Year treat for all ages. It will be performed in Spanish but, hey, we all know the words to the songs anyway, don’t we?
Christmas (Navidad) December 24th and 25th
On Christmas Eve (nochebuena), families gather for a special meal, then many attend the midnight mass (Misa del Gallo). In Taganana and La Matanza this is followed by the Baile del Niño (Dance of the Child) where groups of young men wearing typical costume perform the dance and procession in front of the statue of the newborn child inside the church. The small town of Tigaiga near Los Realejos is transformed into a recreation of various places which were significant in the life of Jesus. Most
the magazine
towns and villages are decorated with lights and garlands and hold nativity scene (belen) competitions.
On Christmas Day most local people visit their families. The Tenerife Symphony Orchestra performs a very popular evening concert in the port area of Santa Cruz that night. On New Year’s Eve (nochevieja), there are enormous parties with dancing to live bands in most town centres. With each chime of the clock at midnight, you must eat a grape. Magnificent fireworks displays follow, with champagne and dancing into the early hours.

Festive makeup
The holiday season is almost upon us and we all want a special look with gorgeous makeup for that big night out. The secret is to play up either the eyes or the mouth, but never both. Either do a ruby red lipstick and simple eye makeup or opt for a smokey eye with a light lip. Whatever look you are going for, you need to start off like an artist does, with a clean palette. Cleanse and tone your face and moisturise, then allow your face a few minutes to absorb the moisturiser or you will never achieve a flawless finish. You will need a few essentials to create the look. These are foundation, concealer, translucent powder, blusher/bronzer, eyeshadow, mascara, brow pencil, eyelash curlers, lipstick, lipgloss and good quality brushes. The first step is to apply a concealer under your eyes and over any imperfections. Always pat onto skin with the pad of your ring finger, never rub.
You then need to apply foundation, if you want a bit of sparkle for the holiday season you can mix a small amount of shimmering pearl lotion to your usual foundation, you only need a little shimmer to look healthy so don’t overdo it. Apply foundation evenly all over your face and neck. With the tips of your fingers, apply dots of foundation on your cheeks, chin, forehead and tip of the nose. Pay special attention to your hairline and jaw line to ensure there’s no obvious line. You want to look natural. Makeup artists swear by foundation brushes to apply products. They soak up less foundation and blend flawlessly. Dust fine, loose powder over your face with a fluffy brush to set your makeup. Next, your eyes, the stars of the show! For a glamorous and sexy effect, you can’t beat the smokey eye look. Smokey eyes have been the trend for quite a while and there’s no sign that this particular style is dying. Step 1: Prepare the lid with an eye shadow base to keep the eyelids oil free and stop eye shadow from melting into your eyelid crease as the night goes on.
health & beauty
Step 2: Eyeliner can make even the smallest eyes appear larger. You can apply this in any colour you choose. Eye shadows make some of the best eyeliners. Deep colours work best, black, brown, grey, violet, purple, blue or green. Choose a palette that comes with three complimentary colours for your eye colour. Using the darkest colour, take an eyeliner brush and wet it, then dab the wet brush into the dark shadow. This allows for a deep, precise line. Holding the skin of your upper lid taut, apply eyeliner from the outside corner of the eye, drawing a line just above the upper lash line. Step 3: Apply eye shadow to your lower lashes. Using an eye shadow brush, apply the deep-hued eye shadow along the bottom lashes, from the outside in. Unless you have wide-set eyes, don’t line the entire lower lid. Instead, stop halfway across. Flick slightly up towards the outer edge. Step 4: Using the lightest shade, sweep a light, shimmery shadow over the lids to your brow bone. Step 5: Using the medium shade, blend in starting at your lash line, blending up to the crease. The key to the perfect smokey eye is proper blending. You want to make sure colours are blended together flawlessly. Make sure your eyes match and make repairs with a Q-tip if necessary. If you want glitter apply a little to the outer third and crease only. To give the appearance of wider eyes, trace the inner rims with a white pencil and dab a little of the lighter eye shade next to the tear ducts. Groom your brows with a brow pencil and brush. To finish your eyes, apply lots of black mascara. It’s the mascara placed near the roots,

Achieve that perfect look by using quality products and following our tips
not the tips that gives the illusion of length. Pull the wand up and through lashes, wiggling as you go. Wiggling separates lashes. Then close the eye and place the mascara wand on top of lashes at the base and pull through to remove any clumps. Curling lashes gives eyes the appearance of being wider and brighter. Shoot warm air from your blow dryer onto the curler for 3-5 seconds to warm it up before curling lashes. It is better to curl lashes after applying mascara, just make sure the mascara is dry first. Hollywood celebrities have been using semipermanent eyelash extensions to achieve that highly glamorous look for years. So why not try some falsies for that special occasion? Professionally applied lashes have the benefit of lasting for two or three weeks if you are careful not to use an oil based makeup remover and they are relatively inexpensive (approximately €10 for strips and €20 for flare lashes). Lips should complement your skin tone, the most flattering lip tones will be one or two shades darker than your natural lip colour. If you are opting for red then the secret is in the undertones. Pink-skinned girls should opt for cherry red. Those with olive skin can wear fire-engine red. Dark skin looks great with deep reds and don’t try to pick the lipstick exactly matching the colour of your Christmas dress. It’s boring and out of fash10
ion. Shades of red and violet tones are at the top of this winter’s trend. Finish lips with a splash of gloss. Finally, to bring a healthy glow to your face apply bronzing powder in sweeping movements over the prominent parts of your face. For a sun kissed sheen dab bronzer powder on your forehead, chin and nose before you apply blusher. Always use a professional full brush to ensure colour is light and well blended. The best shades are warm, golden browns. Only apply blush to the apples of your cheeks. To find out the actual position of the apple of your cheek, look into the mirror and suck your cheeks in and then sweep the brush upwards in an arc from your cheekbone to your hairline. Don’t forget nails, dark coloured polishes are in this season, but they may accentuate imperfections on your hands, wrinkles, pigment spots and protruding veins. Try pink, translucent or beige colours and don’t forget dry cuticles make your hands look older. Rub your hands with special oils. It’s crucial to know where enough is enough. Don’t overuse sparkles. Accentuate protruding parts of your face and body and make sure you add glitz to your shoulders and collar bones. Makeup makes us look sexier, more glamorous and groomed. It exists to make lips more luscious, eyes more striking and skin more youthful. That’s it! Now make up that pretty face of yours and take on the world! And remember to carry a few essentials in your bag for quick top-ups during the evening. Blotting sheets, concealer and your favourite lipstick will see you through the night. The Feng Shui kitchen How to lay out your kitchen according to ancient Feng Shui rules. In Chinese tradition the kitchen is a workshop, a place where all activities come together. Therefore we can apply a floor plan for a kitchen directly to the eight Trigrams. The Trigrams are symbols with three lines showing specific movements. Each of them is connected to a compass direction and gives us detailed hints of what to put in which direction. The following table gives a brief overview of the Trigrams with their appropriate places in a kitchen:
In the north we have the water installations. That can be a dishwasher and the sink. It is pretty logical to put these next to each other, even though the ancient Chinese didn’t know anything about dishwashers. The north-east is a perfect place to store groceries. It is the coldest place in a kitchen and the heat of the sun won’t affect them too much. A refrigerator will consume less energy when put in the north-east corner. A door in the east has some practical advantages. Because it is next to the storage room and the refrigerator, all the shopping is quickly put away.

Let’s see how a Feng Shui kitchen would look
With a preparation area in the south-east, you can overlook the door while you prepare the food, which gives you a secure feeling. Obviously it is a good idea to have the oven next to the preparation area. The south is the hottest place and connected with the fire element. Need some herbs? Just take a step to the right and pick some from the pots with all the fresh grown stuff in the south-west corner of the kitchen. The west is a pretty good place to put some recipe books. If you need new ideas, your collection of delicious recipes would be quickly at hand. Planning a nice dinner needs some inspiration. The north-west corner would be perfect for thinking about the meal. All your recipes are nearby and when a neighbour comes around for a quick chat a small table in this area might be helpful.

Pearls for Girls When it comes to pearls, there appear to be various general misconceptions. This article should help clear up some of them. Misconception 1: pearls can only grow from oysters The first cultured pearls were grown in oysters but mussels have proven to be just as successful, if even more.
Misconception 2: pearls are expensive While oysters usually only have one implant at a time, mussels can accept up to 50 implants and can yield up to 40 pearls from these implants. This makes freshwater (mussel) pearls more affordable than saltwater (oyster) pearls. The growth period for freshwater pearls is longer than for saltwater pearls, which results in a very distinctive nacre quality with high lustre. Freshwater pearl farming has made many advances since its early days, people who once thought that freshwater pearls were inferior to saltwater pearls now find that the best of them are comparable in quality to their saltwater counterparts. Misconception 3: pearls are round and white When we think about pearls, the first image that comes to mind is the big white pearl necklace that our grandmother used to wear. She would keep her necklace in a nice jewellery box and only wear it on those special occasions. Nowadays, freshwater cultured pearls come in a variety of shapes and colours. Natural colours go from white and cream to peach and pink with blue and green overtones. Thanks to recent dyeing techniques freshwater pearls can be enhanced to match the season‘s fashion colours. As far as shape is concerned, only two per cent of freshwater pearls are round. The more common shapes are oval, rice and button but even square or cross shapes can be obtained depending on the shape of the implant. The variety of freshwater pearls inspires designers to create different jewellery at affordable prices. This season‘s fashion trends combine pearls with other materials such as leather, rubber or metal chains. Sitio Litre
Natural beauty and history A haven of peace, pleasure and loveliness, Sitio Litre is one of the most charming spots in Puerto de la Cruz. The private mansion dates back to 1730 and its visitors include William Wilde, father of Oscar, the painter Marianne North, Alexander Humbolt and Agatha Christie. However it is to enjoy the spectacular gardens that today’s visitors flock to Sitio Litre. It is known as the orchid gardens, and there are orchids there, in all their splendid variety, perhaps the best collection in the Canaries, but there is so much more. There are creepers and climbers, bonsai trees and a 600 year old drago, towering palms and water lilies.

Massive koi carp shimmer in a pool near the aquatic plants overlooked by a lush and leafy bamboo, there are walkways and fountains, croquet and hibiscus lawns, trellises and statues, all arranged in alternate displays of sunshine and dappled shade. The mansion’s illustrious visitors have not been forgotten with various areas of the bijou garden set out in their honour, Canarian plants have their own section, there is a small gift shop, some colourful birds singing in a large cage and a comfortable cafeteria and terrace. Colourful masses of bougainvillea and black eyed Susan riot across the roofs and through the trunks and branches of the trees, a huge slipper plant insect

Lexus
IS Sports Saloon Lexus is the name of the luxury division of the Japanese vehicle manufacturer Toyota. It was first introduced into America in 1989 where Lexus was ranked as the highest selling manufacturer of luxury cars and was also named the most reliable brand in the United States. The company slogan is The Pursuit of Perfection. The Lexus IS is as close to perfection as you are likely to find. An extremely stylish and yet sporty saloon, it is fitted with every luxury and safety
feature that you could desire. Standard items include 17-inch 10-spoke alloy wheels, power assisted progressive steering, electronic brake distribution, anti-locking brakes, assisted brakes, electronic stability control, advanced stability control and electronic traction control. Inside the vehicle, there are various airbags for both driver and passenger to protect the chest, abdomen and pelvis as well as the driver’s knee. There are also curtain airbags to cover both sides of the car from front to back, the front seats are designed to prevent serious neck injuries, and the outer rear seats have Isofix fittings for child seats. The central armrest in the rear folds down to facilitate easy loading of the boot, there is tinted glass throughout and the excellent eight speaker six-CD audio system has remote controls on the steering wheel. We drove the 2.2 litre diesel version. Have you ever climbed into a car which is strange to you and yet felt.... just comfortable? Well that is the feeling with the Lexus and it may just have something to do with the electrically adjustable front seats with three memory settings, and the push-button electrically adjustable steering wheel

There‘s lots of acceleration available from the 2.2 engine
which combined, give you no excuse for not being able to find the perfect driving position. The leather seats are nice and squidgy, but once you have sunk into them, they offer perfect back support. All the generous storage compartments simply glide open and shut and the opening central armrest also reveals 12V and auxiliary connections as well as drinks holders.
The Lexus IS not only has dual zone climatisation, but also electrically heated seats. Let’s not just think hot here. With the Lexus, the reverse is possible too, you can chill the seats down and give a whole new meaning to the expression ‘cool’. It’s rather pleasant to be cool all over rather than just the front of your body, as is the case when you use the air conditioning. Other nice finishing touches around the vehicle are the push-button coat hooks, grab handles all round and LED lighting. There’s more once you push the Start button.... We found that at only 2,500rpm this car really does go, and there is still lots of acceleration in fourth and fifth gears. The IS handles very nicely both around town and on country lanes, having positive steering and suspension which rides out

the bumps. Find yourself a parking spot to reverse into and as soon as you have engaged gear, the door mirrors automatically dip down so that you can monitor the kerb as you manouevre. All models have folding rear headrests to give an improved rear view when the back seats are unoccupied. It seems Lexus have thought of nearly everything! Emissions on the 2.2 litre diesel engine have been reduced in the 2009 model and there are more colours and alloy wheel designs to choose from than previously. Somehow, the 2009 model is

cheaper than last year’s, even though Lexus have given this eyecatching sports saloon sharper looks both inside and out, added extra equipment features and made detailed adjustments to give even better handling. The Lexus IS is also available with a 2.5 litre V6 petrol engine.

TIBU explained Martzio Favarin, Marketing Director and part owner of TIBU Tenerife explains the concept behind the new and exclusive nightspot which opened a few weeks ago next to the Las Palmeras hotel. What is TIBU? TIBU is “affordable exclusivity” an international style up market club but with sensible pricing for residents and tourists alike. How is your pricing compared to other bars and nightclubs in the area? We are somewhere in the middle, slightly more than local bars and pubs in the Starco area for example, but cheaper than some of the nightclubs in Tenerife south. Our bottled beers start from 5 euros and all our branded spirits such as Smirnoff, Ron, Gordons, Red Label, Jack Daniels etc are 6 euros. Quality reservas are 8 euros. TIBU only sells top brand spirits. What clientele are you aiming for? The simple answer is an international one, English, Spanish, Scandinavian etc, everyone is welcome, we just ask people to make an effort regarding appearance. What is your door policy? There is NO door charge. However, due to the exclusive nature of the club our
the magazine
dress code is no shorts or vests but smart jeans and trainers are allowed. Which nights are you open and what are the opening times? We are open at the moment on Thursdays which is our “Boutique night” and on Fridays we have special themed nights. Saturday, our busiest night, is “Classic TIBU”. We open at 11pm and have a warm up lounge session with sax and vocal mixes and by 12.30am we are busy. We shut at 6am. Tell us more about the Boutique night.... Yes it’s every Thursday night and the idea behind it is to create an industry/networking night where fashion meets music, giving a chance for local businesses and residents to get togehter and take advantage of the special drinks offers (champagne reception until 1am and drinks at 5 euros). So far it’s proving to be very successful, and every second week we hold a fashion show displaying some of the finest local designer shops Tenerife has to offer. Can you explain the VIP table/bottle service? Yes a group of people will either pre reserve via telephone or request a table on arrival at the club (subject to availability). There are plenty of other seating areas in the club, but a table in the VIP area re-
quires you to purchase a bottle of spirits, for example a Vodka bottle price starts at 80 euros and this is for up to six people. If you do the maths it’s not too expensive considering the price also includes all mixers, and excellent service from our team of waiters from Marbella. What is your music policy? A blend of uplifting sexy vocal house fused with dance floor classics from over the years mixed in a fresh and innovative style. OK Marbella, but why Tenerife? Why not? In recent years Tenerife has seen a big change for the better in terms of clientele, infrastructure, new 5-star resorts etc, also we have seen a higher standard and quality of nightlife from new as well as the existing bars and restaurants in the south. There are many positive reasons to visit and live in Tenerife, now is the perfect time. We are really trying to create a club environment in which fashion, style, good music along with good service and reasonable pricing means that TIBU can really be “affordable exclusivity”. A club that would be at home in any major city in the world, a club that Tenerife residents and tourists can both enjoy and indeed deserve.

Thank you for the music It‘s probably ABBA-out time that the stage show of what is easily the most popular musical around at the moment comes to Tenerife. Mamma Mia! will be in the Auditorio de Tenerife from December 28th to January 4th and in Las Palmas in the Teatro Perez Galdos from January 7th – 29th, and tickets sales are high for both venues. This is the official Spanish version of the show – but even if your bi-lingual skills are a bit lacking, the music and the costumes will more than delight in what is a wonderful stage show, billed as fABBAloso! by Spain’s La Opinion, and as the ABC paper said, “Gracias por la musica“ (Thank you for the music), which is the same in any language. Over 40 million people all around the world have fallen in love with the characters, the story and the music that make Mamma Mia! the ultimate feel-good show! Writer Catherine Johnson’s sunny, funny tale of a daughter’s quest to discover the identity of her father before her wedding on her Greek Island home sees the best ABBA songs (and
there are a lot of those) woven into the lighthearted tale, with some great dance numbers, and to-die-for costumes. Whatever decade you were born in, this is a great fun time for all the family.
Win two tickets to a performance of Mamma Mia! In the Tenerife Auditorio on January 3rd at 6pm To win answer the following question and send your answer, along with your name and a contact telephone number, by mail, email (Magazine@icmedia. eu) or fax (details on page 4). The closing date for receipt of entries is Friday December 18th. Winners will be drawn and notified on Monday December 21st. Island Connections Media Group staff and their families are not eligible to enter. One entry per person only. If the first name drawn is unavailable after a 24 hour period, the second name chosen will be deemed to be the winner and so on. The winner will have until 2pm on Wednesday December 23rd to collect their prize.

Los Muelles de Génova Palm Mar
Da Vinci Ristorante Pizzeria Grill
Situated on the top floor of the commercial centre, Da Vinci is owned by Domingo who opened his first pizza restaurant in Playa de las Américas in 1977. He loves the position at Los Muelles de Génova and sees it as a quality area with a high standard of clientele who are mainly English, German and Belgian. The Italian chefs at Da Vinci create quality food made with fresh and natural products. 40
We decided to try a pizza, which we designed ourselves with our favourite toppings and watched while the chef created it. The pasta is fresh and the pizzas are genuine Italian, suiting those who prefer a finer crust. We followed this with a delicious pannacotta for dessert which was drizzled with forest fruits. Dine in the elegant rustic/Italian atmosphere of Da Vinci and experience the very best of Italian food. Domingo’s favourite phrase is, “come and taste it
for yourself”. Da Vinci will be open during the festive season, on Christmas Eve until 8.30pm, Christmas Day until 6pm and New Year’s Eve from 6pm to 11pm.

Only 10 minutes from the Reina Sofía airport, yet secluded from the hustle and bustle of busy resort areas, those lucky enough to live in this quiet and exclusive residential area situated between Guaza mountain, the protected natural space of Malpais de Rasca and the Atlantic Ocean, now enjoy all the benefits of the new commercial centre Los Muelles de Génova which not only attracts those who live in the vicinity, but also those who come from further afield. Not surprisingly, the centre is also becoming a gastronomic hub for Palm Mar. All establishments benefit from excellent design with individual terraces and easy access to the street via lifts, escalators and ramps.
Chopstix Chinese Restaurant and Sushi Bar
Owners Ou and Ji Ming Ni also fell in love with Los Muelles de Génova. On the top floor with magnificent sea views, Chopstix not only offers a standard Chinese menu but also specialises in fresh Sushi and other unusual dishes including Frogs’ Legs with Onions, and Ants on the Tree which are very popular with Spanish clients, and Pollo sin Número which the Belgian clients love and which we tried.

Before that, we sampled the delicious sushi and sashimi (see photograph). Chopstix offers high quality food with amazing value and excellent personal service. All food is prepared and served by their Chinese staff and chef (the owner, Ji Ming Ni) who has worked for six years in New York. Inside the restaurant, enjoy your food surrounded by traditional Chinese décor which has been given a modern, clean and fresh twist. This is the place to go for something a little
different or unusual, and represents excellent value for money. Chopstix will be open throughout the Christmas and New Year period with their normal menu and prices.

Maxine’s Wine Bar and Restaurant Maxine and Andy came to Tenerife seeking a new challenge and decided to open a quality yet affordable restaurant in Palm Mar which clients could manage to visit regularly. Maxine’s Wine Bar and Restaurant offers an international wine list which assures variety, consistent quality and value for money. The food menu was designed by chef Rob McGarrol adding an Australian touch to many of the dishes following his experience there last year. It includes a good choice of fresh dishes which have been carefully sourced and lovingly prepared, at realistic prices. There are regular favourites as well as dishes offering the diner a different experience. We started our meal with the fish platter which consisted of mussels, langostines, whitebait and fresh salmon with homemade tartare sauce and dill mayonnaise, 42
and followed this with the delicious Thai Style Fish – seabass roasted with Thai spices and served with wild rice. The spices complemented the fish perfectly without masking its own delicate flavour. Our Rib Eye Steak was cooked to perfection, tender and juicy, served with fresh vegetables and potato wedges. The freshly made irresistible desserts are to be particularly recommended, especially to chocoholics. We tried the chef’s signature dish, the hot chocolate fondant. A soft, rich filled chocolate sponge
which when cut into, oozed hot chocolate from its centre. It was complemented with cool vanilla ice cream. We also tried the chocolate delice and Cointreau soaked orange slices. Smooth, rich and chocolatey, perfectly complemented by the capuccino cream, and to die for! Children are welcome, there are standard high chairs, non-breakable plates and cups, or they can be kept occupied with plenty of activities while the adults enjoy their food. Come along to Maxine’s, relax, enjoy quality food and wines in a quiet but modern atmosphere inside, or take in the views of the cliffs and ocean from the terrace. We waddled away totally satisfied, and promised each other that we would return soon.

Chocolate delice, espresso cream & Cointreau orange segments Ingredients
Method
160g sugar 8 teaspoons water 2 whole eggs 4 egg yolks 369g dark chocolate (50 per cent cocoa or more) 750ml whipping cream 2 oranges 2 shots of Cointreau 2 shots of espresso
To be prepared one day in advance. Segment the oranges and leave to soak in the Cointreau. Whip 500ml of the cream and leave in fridge. Melt chocolate until nice and smooth and without lumps. Add sugar, water, and eggs to a metal or glass bowl and cook over a pan of simmering water until the mixture has doubled in size and has reached the ribbon stage of cooking, be sure to never stop moving the mixture as we don’t want scrambled eggs. Now add
the chocolate to this mixture. Fold this mixture into the whipped cream until you have a nice consistent mousse. 3/4 fill 10 to 12 fluted glasses with the mixture and leave in the fridge to set. With the remainder of the cream, whip and add the cold espresso. When the mousse is set fill the rest of the glasses with your coffee cream and add two orange segments. Serve.

Qfm 5 Star Christmas
TOP 40 Stanley Clarke
38 Christmas In Rio Christmas music has been given a rather poor reputation over the years, stereotyped as either one hit wonders, annoying pop or elevator music. So The Magazine and Qfm have teamed up this season to compile a list of 40 festive songs with kudos, typical 5 Star Qfm style! The Qfm Festive Top 40 will be presented on air on the 24th, 2pm to 5pm by Maria Couso (Spanish) and Theresa Willson (English).
Roomful of Blues
40 White Christmas A great version of this classic in a unique Louisiana blues style from this eight piece ensemble with over 18 albums to their name.
Natalie Cole
39 Carol Of The Bells Recorded in 1999 with the London Symphony Orchestra, from her The Magic Of Christmas album.
44
The bass maestro’s closest shot at a seasonal tune, just right for a Christmas day on a Tenerife beach.
The Emotions
What Do The Lonely
37 Do At Christmas
The classic 70’s soul blues festive ballad, originally released as a single with the stereo version on side A and a good old fashioned mono edit on the flipside.
Malene Mortensen
36
Driving Home For Christmas
Chris Rea’s 2001 hit, remade with surprising bossa-jazz style by this Danish popstress.
Diana Krall

Santa Claus is Coming to Town
Over to Canada for a swinging version from this prolific vocalist’s twelfth album since her 1993 debut.
Charles Brown
34 Santa’s Blues From his 1994 album, Charles Brown’s Cool Christmas Blues, a mix of uplifting and downbeat tunes from this bluesman whose first ever album, released in 1961, was a compilation of Christmas covers.
Mel Tormé
33 The Christmas Song Mel co-wrote the original version of the Christmas Song along with Bob Wells in 1944, this version brings the classic to this century courtesy of a Sonny J remix.
James Brown
32 Soulful Christmas The title track from the 1968 album, one of six albums he released that very same year. (The Godfather of Soul genuinely was the hardest working man in the music industry!)
music Smokey Robinson

Of all the versions of this duet, we’ve chosen this offering from the ex Stray Cat lead man’s new project. He’s still got that 50’s swing which he honed during the 80’s, and it proliferates in this meticulous reworking.
From the 2007 album, Happy Christmas Chill, a refreshingly cool version fusing smooth jazz and electronic rhythms.
Poncho Sanchez

Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas
Christmas celebrations are still outlawed in Cuba. This Texas born multi instrumentalist and composer obviously felt the need to create some Afro-Cuban festive numbers to ruffle the tinsel of his Caribbean neighbours.
Art Garfunkel & Amy Grant
28 The Decree
From The Animal’s Christmas Story, an ancient legend converted onto vinyl by Jimmy Webb, featuring these outstanding vocalists with a school choir.

This is one of the two originals penned by the dynamic duo for their 2006 Home For Christmas. The title speaks volumes, and John Oates’ vocals strike some sensitive chords.

Now Behold the Lamb
Genuine gospel-soul composer and producer who began his career in 1992 by forming a 17 piece choir.
Stephanie Mills
23 This Christmas The grammy award winning soulstress letting us know how R&B sounded before hip-hop crept in through the back door, this track from her 1991 Christmas album.
Warren Hill
20 Santa Baby Absolute seductive, wicked sax work to get things loosened, so to speak, at the office party!

The Christmas Blues
This year’s only festive release to make this list, from Bob’s brand new Chistmas In The Heart album which is rather disappointing due to the amount of cover versions, not what we’d expect from the USA’s legendary poetic songwriter. We forgive him slightly for including this track, and because he’s donating the proceeds of the album to charity.
Aaron Neville
21
Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!
From the 1993 platinum Aaron Neville’s Soulful Christmas, we’ve picked this track for its uplifting old style R&B feel.
Michael Doucet
We Three Kings
Try to imagine a classic Christmas carol played Cajun style. You can’t, really, can you? Just listen!
Pepe Castillo
18 Aguinaldo Jibaro Traditional Puerto Rico festive folk with a warm, tropical ambience.

Here Comes Santa Claus
In addition to working as Rod Stewart’s guitarist for seven years, Jeff has a rather impressive solo career behind him, and this instrumental is typical of his ice cool playing style.

Santa’s Coming (AKA Santa Claus Is Coming To Town)

Brian Culbertson
8 Jingle Bells A great funky piano version of this classic to get even the most Scroogelike character into the festive spirit!
Aretha Franklin
7 This Christmas Sweet and sour lyrics from the Queen of Soul released last year, remarkably her only Christmas album of her fifty year career.

Christmas Blues (Live)
Blues Traveler front man John Popper and guitar legend Eric Clapton teamed up for a live Christmas concert in 1998, the project ended up as a live album the following year. Great bluesy jam, with the odd Christmas lyrics thrown in!
Margie Joseph
4 Christmas Gift
The brothers, reduced to a duo through the sands of time, managed to record a festive album before Ron Isley was jailed for tax fraud. He’s due for release in 2010, so there’s still a chance that The Isley Brothers can hold their record of charting in every decade since the 1950’s.
Donald Fagan
2 Snowbound A timeless creation from Donald, produced by his old Steely Dan colleague, Walter Becker, from the Kamakiriad album, a concept album set in the future where the author travels through the USA to a newly formed continent in a steam powered 100 per cent ecological car. In this track, he stops in a mountain town with a beautiful hitch hiker, and they both become snowbound…..
1 To be revealed! This track is a simple acoustic piano and guitar composition. It is not a cover version, its title does not mention Christmas, and there are no bells or chimes in it. But there is no song which sums up the essence of seasonal ambience more than this one. Listen to Qfm 94.3/6 or wwwQmusica.com on the 24th of December, 2pm to 5pm, and discover what the Qfm Number 1 festive track of all time is! And from all of the Qfm Team, have a stylish Christmas and a great 2010!
Another old school R&B veteran, the lyrics, energy and feeling put into the vocals just can’t be matched by today’s disposable pop culture.

Golf Pro Tip
Chest to chest 1
In this monthly edition I would like you to learn how to pitch it close. The pitch shot is a recovery shot where the ball spends more time flying than rolling and with a sound technique we can actually impart loads of spin and drop ‘n stop the ball. This is how we do it.... The chest to chest action
2
1. We should select the most lofted wedge in our bag (either sand wedge or lob wedge). Place the ball in the middle of your stance making sure that your stance is about hip width. 2. Take the club back with the rotation of your chest, letting your wrist hinge gradually. The length of your backswing must be in proportion with the distance we have to play.
3
4
3. Make sure you start your downswing with your chest rotating left of the target and it is crucial that you hold the wrist hinge at impact exactly like you had it at your backswing with your hands remaining passive at impact. This is only possible if your left hip keeps turning left of target. This is the secret for backspin. 4. When you get to your finish posture, make sure that it equals the length of your backswing or slightly longer, always making sure that the knuckles of your left hand are facing the sky. When you use this technique the ball leaves the clubface with tons of backspin and will land like ‘a butterfly with sore feet’.

Going Golfing at the Golf Shop Paul, Bill and Muriel Smith are not only the proud new owners of the Golf Shop in Las Chafiras, but also the very successful owners of Tenerife’s longest established golf tour company, going-golfing.com. Easily visible from the TF-1 motorway, the Golf Shop links well with the tour business as they have clients from all over Europe who can not only book their tee times and hotel accommodation, but also take advantage of splendid offers on shoes, clubs, bags and all golf related items, right down to tees. Paul has considerable golfing and customer service experience so he knows the needs of golfers. He plans to stock all the top named brands in golf for clubs, putters, wedges, golf bags, shoes and clothing like Callaway, TaylorMade, Adidas, Cleveland, Titleist, Foot Joy, Ashworth and Cobra. Muriel helps out in the ladies department which stocks the latest in clothing, shoes, gloves and also clubs for the fairer sex. They also have an in-house golf club repair workshop where you can also renew grips, lengthen or shorten clubs, and they will even replace or renew shafts. A large range of both club and putter grips are in stock and there are special offers on re-gripping. In the shop right now they have reduced the prices of several products to make way for all the new stock which has been ordered. Some wonderful bargains on the clothing side 52
are to be had like reductions on ladies Callaway shoes and Calloway gents shorts. New in are Callaway Ashworth Adidas Daily Sport and TUp both for gents and ladies. On the club side they have reduced all Odyssey Putters and Calloway wedges by 30 per cent. If you are new to golf they have a full set of clubs (irons, woods and putter), bag and shoes, Paul says he will also throw in balls and tees, everything you need to get started for only 300 euros. There are also gloves by all the top manufacturers, tees all shapes and sizes, soft spikes for your shoes, aircraft carry bags, trolleys and much more. The Smiths will go out of their way to help you, the customer, in any way they can, giving you a good deal along the way. Opening hours are Monday-Friday 9am-6pm, Saturday 9am-2pm.
