As we go to press news has come in that for the first time in 18 months the number of tourists to Spain increased, and that increase is also reflected in tourists visiting the Canary Islands. While it’s far far too early to breathe anything but a whisper of relief, it’s no bad thing to let people know that corners just might be about to be turned. So much of the brunt of this global economic crisis has fallen on small shoulders, those of individuals struggling to keep heads above water – not easy with a financial burden of these dimensions bearing down upon you. And given that most of our readers depend either directly or indirectly upon tourism the effects have been felt heavily. In time of belt tightening luxuries such as foreign holidays are among the first things to go, and they went... No-one wants to be over optimistic, nor start looking to spend, spend spend. And across the board it is forecast that even when the crisis is well and truly over and there is more disposable income around again, people will continue to look for value for money in a way they didn’t do before the financial bubble burst. That’s good news for quality destinations and tourist businesses though, and is the right kind of spur to those looking to emerge from these doldrums. Quality, and a good price:value ratio will win out in the end.

Wine Tasting course Casa del Vino, La Baranda, El Sauzal, March 2 to 5, 6.30pm to 9.30pm

La Casa del Vino La Baranda is a traditional Canarian agricultural estate house situated in El Sauzal in the north of Tenerife. It now houses a museum which offers the visitor the opportunity to learn about the history of wine making on the island. Run by the Cabildo, it promotes the island’s wines under the denominations of origin: Abona, Tacoronte-Acentejo, Valle de Güímar, Valle de La Orotava and Ycoden-Daute-Isora. The building also houses a honey museum. In the years since La Casa del Vino La Baranda opened, it has engaged in many different wine growing, cultural,

gastronomic and artistic activities. There have been many sessions organised for tasting wine, cheese, gastronomy events and educational activities, plus exhibitions of paintings

by some very different artists, and their now famous music concerts.

Easter highlights Easter week, known as Semana Santa, is celebrated in the Canary Islands from Palm Sunday, which this year falls on March 28th, to Easter Sunday on April 4th and is the most important religious festival of the year. The bank holidays are on Maundy Thursday and Good Friday. Easter is celebrated all over the islands, notably in La Laguna, Adeje, Güímar, Garachico, Los Realejos, La Orotava, Puerto de la Cruz, Tacoronte, Candelaria and Granadilla in Tenerife, in Las Palmas, Terór, Gáldar and Playa del Inglés in Gran Canaria and in Santa Cruz de La Palma. The holy week presents you with some of the most religious and cultural acts as the people of the Canaries celebrate with fervour, costumes and colour. On Maundy Thursday, most churches and chapels are opened to the public to view the Eucharistic figures, which have been crafted over the years. There are processions in most major towns, with statues of incalculable historical and artistic value being carried, especially on Easter

the magazine

Thursday and Good Friday when you can see the Magna and Silent processions. The most notable of these is La Laguna with formal processions taking place all week which are said to be the most traditional in all the Canary Islands. In addition to these religious processions, some towns have also developed a tradition for the staging of passion plays in the street, and in the south of Tenerife, Adeje is worthy of a visit. This is a highly professional production performed by more than 300 actors, the majority of them amateur. The stages are set all along the Calle Grande and great effort is put into this annual event which takes you from the Last Supper to the Crucifixion. The standard of the individual stage sets and costumes is nothing short of amazing and improves each year. The real thing begins at midday on Good Friday and lasts for approximately two hours. You will need to arrive early in order to secure a parking place and a good vantage point. Alternatively, you may be lucky enough to catch the rehearsals on the days running up to the event.

Wake up gorgeous! Part 2

Permanent eyeliner beautifies and enhances eyes. The thought of someone working close to your eye with needles may make you feel a little uncomfortable but understanding a little more about the structure of the eye will help you to feel more confident.

each bottom lash and in a more of a stippled or connected dots technique. Due to the natural salt we have in our tears, the bottom line will always fade a lot more than the top and give a softer effect but a very important one. Without bottom definition, your eyes tend to look droopy and tired. Done correctly, which means, not done with a thick application, the liner will

The eyelids act to sweep dirt from the surface of the eye, protecting it from injury, and helping distribute tear fluid. Permanent make-up is applied with a closed lid – thus protecting the eyeball at all times. The lid is held firmly, but gently, in order to get enough stretch for pigment retention in that area. The part of the eyelid which is worked on is thicker. An experienced technician will be able to apply some darkness in between the eyelashes to give the appearance of a fuller and thicker lash base. It is an area in which you simply cannot get conventional eyeliner, the line you get with over the counter products, ends up accentuating the thinning of your lash line instead of plumping it up. This lash enhancement gives you a brighter and more open eyed look. It is natural and cannot be easily detected as added. You can go to sleep, wake up, swim, sweat, etc. without ‘tell tale panda eyes’. For those who want a more dramatic look, a bit more thickness or darkness to the upper lash line can be added to make the eye appear even more outstanding. The lower liner is definitely treated a bit differently than the top liner. It needs to be put in between 12

actually make your eyes ‘pop’. If not done in just that precise way, a thick black liner will tend to close the eye up. The choices in colour for eyeliner have basically come down to black and black brown. Colour can actually be applied as a shadow above the liner (permanently or by conventional means) if desired, later. If you understand colour theory, the reason why you should not rim your eyes with a medium or light brown is that those browns tend to have too much warmth or red tones in them and can give your eyes a rabbit eye, pink effect. A very important tip is that eyeliners should not go past the last lash in any direction, top or bottom. This is due to the fact that if done in the outer area of the eye, you could experience weeping or bleeding of the colour under the skin, where it is not supposed to be. An experienced technician will decline to pass these parameters. Better safe than sorry in these instances! If you are considering permanent make-up for the first time, you should ask lots of questions. First, ask where and for how long the technician trained. Good technicians have received weeks of training. How long has she been qualified? Ask to see where the procedures are performed. Does the area look clean and comfortable? Ask to see photographs of her previous work, do you like the results? Permanent cosmetics are just that, permanent, so take advantage of the many benefits and

Organised by the Hindu community of the south of Tenerife and the Adeje council, the colourful all day fair brought the sounds and spicy aromas of India to Tenerife with numerous stalls selling authentic Indian and Indonesian food, typical Indian ornaments, jewellery, pictures, rugs, t-shirts, shoes, books, bags, and a large bargain clothing and accessories area. Decor Internacional decor internacional was founded 33 years ago by José Manuel pérez and isabel Mesa in a premises of only 20 square metres where they provided upholstery services, sold fabrics and made curtains. they still do all that today, but their once tiny shop grew into a large store in los realejos supplying an enormous variety of fabrics and products for the home. Now Decor Internacional is well established on the San Jeronimo industrial estate at La Orotava and in Calle Galcerán, Santa Cruz, and on February 5th, a new store was opened, in Barranco Las Torres, Adeje with a well attended party where the guests enjoyed drinks and exquisite snacks..

Bentley

Continental GTC Launched in March 2006, Bentley’s luxury, elegant and modern 2+2 convertible can reach a top speed of 195mph (312km/h), with a sophisticated all-wheel drive system, state-of-the-art 12-cylinder engine, advanced air suspension and ultra-stiff body structure. With the roof stowed you immediately notice how the interior is beautifully framed by a continuous strip of stainless steel which runs around the waist line. The GTC has a stunning cabin which uses exquisite Bentley design with an unrivalled standard of craftsmanship, utilising natural wood veneers and leather hides of the finest quality. These give a contemporary yet timeless appearance. The unique seven-

bow, three-layer, soft fabric roof with heated glass rear screen operates electro-hydraulically and provides peerless acoustic damping and exceptional refinement during use. The symmetrical theme of the fascia, echoing the shape of the Bentley wings, is reflected through the cabin and onto the leather hide tonneau cover which has carefully positioned stitch lines, highlighting its form and craftsmanship. The front seats have a sculpted back giving an additional 30mm (1.2 inches) of knee-space in the rear. The inner roof is trimmed with a very high quality fabric which resembles the slung headliner in the original coachbuilt Bentleys. Though craftsmanship remains as important as ever, these enduring skills have been complemented by 21st century technology allowing, for instance, wood veneer to be dramatically curved in a way that would simply not have been possible in the past. Continental GTC owners will lack nothing inside their car, which is equipped with the latest advanced cabin technology. As well as the electro-hydraulically operated soft fabric roof, it has power-latching doors and fully adjustable electric front seats (also heated with an optional massage function), climate control and an

To ensure occupant safety, an advanced rollover protection system is installed beneath the rear headrests. If the car’s onboard computer senses that the car is about to roll, two reinforced steel hoops are deployed in a split second, working in conjunction with the exceptionally strong

advanced infotainment system. Other standard features are keyless entry and ignition, consolemounted start/stop button, electronic park brake with move-off assist, stainless steel-faced foot pedals and driver’s footrest, and comprehensive anti-theft and immobiliser systems. Generally, the GTC has most of the features which you would expect from a 2010 vehicle. The GTC is powered by Bentley’s W12 twinturbocharged 6-litre engine, tuned to deliver that legendary wave of torque from low revs. The rear suspension system improves the ride and refinement while the high-tech, all-wheel-drive system with Torsen differential for exceptional stability and grip in any conditions is driven by an advanced six-speed automatic gearbox with manual change mode and paddleshift controls. Our Bentley, a May 2008 model, had also been equipped with the Mulliner range of options which consist of aluminium fascia panels, contrast stitching to seats and door panels and embossed ‘Bentley’ to seat facings, 4-spoke wood and hide steering wheel, lambswool rugs for front footwells, deep-pile carpet mats with hide trimming, a choice of premium veneers and Mulliner alloy fuel filler cap. The exterior features include twin bi-xenon headlamps with integrated washer jets to the front, high-intensity LED tail and stop lights and a discrete high-level stop-lamp integrated 34

windshield frame to protect front and rear passengers. The driver can select from four pre-programmed suspension settings from Comfort through to Sport. These settings automatically adjust the computer-controlled shock absorbers to ensure that the car reacts in the right way to your driving style. At speeds above 152mph (245km/h), the suspension automatically lowers the car to ensure that aerodynamic lift is kept to a minimum, benefitting high-speed stability. The advanced continuous all-wheel drive system gives the vehicle astonishing traction and poise whatever the weather. The GTC also incorporates Bosch anti-locking brakes, traction control and an Electronic Stability Programme (ESP), both of which can be disabled at the discretion of the driver. These driver aids offer additional security and control over the car’s dynamic potential without being intrusive, thereby ensuring the unique Bentley driving experience remains undisturbed. La Torre del Mirador La Torre del Mirador, as its name suggests, sits like a watchtower over the ocean, offering wonderful views across the sea to La Gomera. It is situated in an idyllic spot beside the coastal path between the hotels Bahía del Duque and Mirador and makes an ideal stopping place during a walk, day or night.

This delightful restaurant is managed by the Sides family. Cristobal Sides divides his time between La Torre del Mirador and his other well respected restaurant, Garibaldi. La Torre del Mirador has a capacity for some 350 diners, and consists of a series of airy terraces and sophisticated rooms, some of which are distinctly cosy. Resembling a Canarian mansion, it offers a touch of elegance and comfort. Each of the eight independent and intimate rooms can seat from 10 to 22 diners and create a wonderful atmosphere for sampling the magnificent variety of culinary delights and national wines on offer. They are also ideal for corporate or business events or presentations. All nationalities are welcome to dine, lunchtimes or evenings, inside or out on the terraces. The ample menu contains an exquisite variety of local, national and international dishes, achieving a perfect blending of flavours, textures and presentation. The speciality of La Torre del Mirador is Ensalada de Atun en Escabeche (salad with marinated tuna), Salmon Ahumado con Pan de Melba (smoked salmon with melba toast), Cherne á la Marinera (cherne fisherman’s style) or á la Bilbaina.

Around the world on a cruise ship by Gerald Ruben

In our last edition, we travelled to the South Island of New Zealand, docking at Lyttleton. However the reason you have come here is to see Christchurch which was really founded by John Robert Godley. His idea was to form an Anglican God-fearing community in an English setting, which from an architectural point of view he most certainly succeeded in doing. From a moral point of view he did what he could by requiring every settler to provide a certificate signed by his local parson saying he, the settler, was sober, industrious and honest. As you can imagine there are a lot of churches and a beautiful Anglican cathedral which was consecrated in 1881. Moving outside of the city of Christchurch you will come to the Canterbury Plains where the scenery is stunning and criss-crossed by fast flowing rivers. It is here where you will find the famous sheep rearing area of New Zealand. Literally millions of sheep produce the world famous Canterbury lamb. A visit to a sheep farm is a must, they put on a terrific show which you will remember for the rest of your life. It is also here

in the Canterbury region that you will find some of New Zealand’s finest wines. It is the country’s fifth largest planted area and is dominated by the two giants of the region, St Helena and Giesen. However there is a whole host of small boutique vineyards producing some really great wines.

The reason why the wines are so good is that the North Island enjoys low rainfall, and the warm days and cool nights enable the fruit to ripen slowly with high acidity and extract. There are ample opportunities to visit some wineries whilst you are off the ship and you won’t starve either. Several wineries offer fresh wholesome lunches featuring an array of local specialities, such as eel and salmon, patés, and cheeses. Most wineries in this region will have a restaurant attached to the vineyard. Some points to note whilst you are ashore, taxis do not usually cruise for hire and tipping is not expected. They can be found at stands and hotels. In the case of an accident, contact the Christchurch police on 111 or 3793999. The currency is New Zealand dollars but all major credit cards are accepted. To hire a car you could try National Rental Cars, tel. 0800800115. Canterbury offers a terrific variety of restaurants to choose from, ranging from cheap and cheerful to haute cuisine. Please note that smoking in all hospitality venues, including bars, restaurants, cafés and casinos is strictly prohibited. This is the case throughout New Zealand. Don’t forget to check what time you have to be back on board as the ship won’t wait. 47

callaway Diablo edge

Hybrids Designed with a very thin crown and VFT (Variable Face Thickness) Technology to save weight and increase performance, the Diablo Edge features additional perimeter weighting, combined with a large sole ‘footprint’ which delivers straighter shots, more often. The centre of gravity in each model has also been specifically located to promote certain shot shapes. In the standard model with an offset hosel and a low, deep CG which provides a high launch trajectory with maximum forgiveness, whereas the Tour model has a less offset hosel, and an even lower, forward CG which provides a more

penetrating ball flight with additional workability, preferred by higher swing speed players. It has been put to good use on tour already by Callaway staff professionals Nick Dougherty, Anton Haig, Alexander Noren, Thongchai Jaidee, Niclas Fasth, David Drysdale and Danny Lee.

The Diablo Edge and Diablo Edge Tour are each priced at €159 (£139)

callaway Diablo edge

Irons Callaway has engineered the Diablo Edge Irons with a 50 per cent lower and 17 per cent deeper centre of gravity, a game improvement feature that makes the sweet spot more accessible to the lower impact locations produced by amateur golfers. The strategically placed CG and large cavity back design will help all golfers generate longer, more consistent distances whilst maintaining a forgiving and high trajectory ball flight pattern.

In sets of eight clubs, Diablo Edge GRPH are priced at €899 (£649), and Diablo Edge STL at €699 (£549).
