Joan Manuel Serrat Hijo de luz y de la sombra, May 25th, 9pm, Auditorio de Tenerife, Santa Cruz

Serrat, considered one of the most important figures of modern popular music in Catalan and Castellano, will perform in the Auditorio in Santa Cruz de Tenerife on May 25th.

Serrat will be performing songs from his latest album, Hijo de la luz y de la sombra, words by poet Miguel Hernández, and arranged

by Joan Albert Amargós. This work celebrated the centenary of the birth of Hernández and, according to Serrat, “as an old friend I wish to celebrate that centenary on stage”. He also says he hopes that the arrangements will bring the poems closer to the public, as Hernández is one of Spain’s “fundamental contemporary poets”, and through the songs he wants people

to discover the soul of the man.

Joan Manuel Serrat, born in 1943 became involved with music at the age of 17, when he got his first guitar. In the early 60’s, he was in a band playing along with classmates at Barcelona’s Agronomy School and performing mainly Beatles songs and Italian ‘popof-the-era’ songs translated to Spanish.

The Catalan singer has been pleasing audiences for decades, and nearly won the Eurovision song contest back in 1968 when he was originally chosen to sing La, la, la. He however insisted that he would only perform in Catalan to the displeasure of the Franco authorities, who replaced him with Massiel who went on to win the trophy.

Serrat’s songs were banned and his

records burned in the streets and the artist himself spent many years away from his native land until Franco’s death in 1975 when he was able to return to Spain.

Delirium Teatro The Konquest of the Canaries, May 29th, 9pm, Auditorio Municipal, El Sauzal

The Delirium Teatro company was founded in 1985 and is based in Tacoronte and have won many awards in the Canary Islands, Spain and further afield for their staging of original works.

The Konquest of the Canaries (La Konkista de Canarias), by Canarian writer Antonio Tabares, is a comedy written for the general public. The show looks at the most important events in the history of the Islands through the ages, from the Norman invasions to the intervention of Castalia,

with the spotlight falling, in various shades, on each of the seven islands. This is a play within a play, as the story unfolds through the eyes and actions of a not-too-successful group of young actors who are trying to stage a conventional play on the history of the Canaries, but whose disastrous efforts are constantly interrupted by a series of incidents which affect their performances.

Alma Pirámide de Arona, Playa de las Américas

A new show choreographed by Carmen Mota premieres at the Pirámide de Arona in Playa de las Américas on May 5th.

Alma (meaning soul), is a work dedicated to dance. This show brings a passionate blend of modern with classical Spanish dance, and of pure flamenco with jazz, recreating the colonial times of flamenco. With all new costumes and stage lighting, this new show is sure to be a great hit. Tickets will be available from the Pirámide de Arona box office.

VII Tensamba Festival From its timid beginning seven years ago in La Laguna, this year Tensamba travels for the first time to Paris, London, Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo. Here in the Canary Islands, more than 30 events between now and June 12 will feature Brazil’s music, culture, cinema and gastronomy.

Tensamba features an exceptional array of Brazilian musicians and vocalists. Also new this year is the inclusion of the best Brazilian DJs at Brasilectro in Puerto de la Cruz on May 8.

Nutrition and your oral health

Nutrition plays an important role in overall wellness, including oral health. Maintaining a healthy diet can help reduce the risk of developing problems in your mouth, including periodontal disease. In fact, including certain foods as part of a nutritious diet has actually been shown to play a role in the prevention of periodontal disease.

Lactic acid and calcium A recent study determined that individuals who regularly consume 55 or more grammes of foods containing lactic acid, commonly found in dairy products such as yogurt, have a lower instance of gum disease. Dairy products are also a good source of calcium which has been shown to lower the risk of severe periodontal disease. The American Dietetic Association advises that adults should consume at least three servings of calcium each day to help keep the jaw bone strong and teeth in place.

Research has suggested that periodontal disease may affect overall systemic health. The studies reinforce what most of the public already know, the importance of dairy foods in helping to achieve a healthy lifestyle, including a healthy mouth. Study participants aged 40 to 79 were examined on two 10

periodontal parameters which can indicate gum disease, periodontal pocket depth and loss of gum tissue.

Vitamin C According to a study, consuming less than 60mg of vitamin C each day can put you at slightly higher risk of developing certain types of periodontal disease. According to the Institute of Medicine, the recommended dietary allowance for vitamin C is 60mg per day, or about one orange. The relationship between vitamin C and periodontal disease is likely to be due to vitamin C’s role in maintaining and repairing healthy connective tissue along with its antioxidant properties. Periodontal disease is an inflammatory disorder which increases tissue damage and

loss. Since vitamin C is known as a powerful scavenger of reactive oxygen species, which form part of the body’s antioxidant defence system, low levels of dietary vitamin C may compromise the body’s ability to neutralise these tissue destructive oxidants.

Researchers also found that tobacco users especially had higher levels of periodontal disease if they also consumed lower levels of dietary vitamin C. Since oxidants from cigarette smoking lower vitamin C levels in the blood, smokers need higher levels of dietary vitamin C to help counteract smoke’s oxidants.

Vitamin D Sometimes known as the ‘sunshine vitamin’, vitamin D can help lessen inflammation associated with MAY 2010

health & beauty periodontal disease. Research shows that foods fortified with vitamin D such as milk, eggs, sardines, and tuna, as well as moderate exposure to sunlight, can provide you with the amount of vitamin D required to stay healthy.

Numerous studies indicate that vitamin D and calcium deficiencies result in bone loss and increased inflammation.

Inflammation is a well recognised symptom of periodontal disease, which is why it has been suggested that calcium and vitamin D deficiency may be a risk factor.

Research shows that the best means of obtaining the required amount of vitamin D is from sunshine. According to the National Institute of Health, season, geographic latitude, time of day, cloud cover, smog and sunscreen affect ultraviolet ray exposure and vitamin D synthesis. Ten to 15 minutes of sun exposure at least two times per week to the face, arms, hands or back is usually sufficient to provide adequate vitamin D. People who live in an area with limited sun exposure may want to eat foods fortified with vitamin D such as milk, eggs, sardines and tuna.

We are not encouraging people to forego their sun protection, nor to spend prolonged periods of time in the sun.

There is no such thing as a total UV block. Even the most effective sunscreens currently on the market let through enough UV to allow for adequate vitamin D formation.

Periodontal diseases are bacterial infections which, if left untreated, may cause damage to the bone and even tooth loss. A number of infectious diseases have

been linked with low levels of vitamin D, and it has been demonstrated that vitamin D can suppress pro-inflammatory cytokine production (pro-inflammatory cytokines are molecules which have destructive effects throughout the body). Periodontal disease increases the production of cytokines, but it has been demonstrated that vitamin D can suppress cytokine production, and possibly decrease the risk of periodontal disease.

Healthy Diet Obesity can be the result of an unbalanced diet, which may lack the nutrients known to help prevent gum disease. Also, excessive consumption of sugary drinks such as soft drinks and foods high in sugars, trans-fats, and sodium are often associated with increased tooth decay and can have a negative impact on periodontal health.

Periodontists have known for a while that people who consume less than the recommended dietary allowance of calcium and vitamin C have slightly higher rates of periodontal disease.

Young people are now drinking more

soft drinks and non-citrus juices than milk and healthier beverages, decreasing their vitamin C and calcium intake.

Periodontitis has long been considered an older person’s disease, as more than half of people aged 55 or over have it. We now know that widespread risk factors such as obesity may also compromise periodontal health in younger populations. This is one more finding which shows that healthy nutrition and adequate physical activity are necessary for overall health, and may also help to improve periodontal health by reducing the rate of progression of periodontal disease.

Without the proper nutrients from a healthy diet, the body can have a hard time fighting off infections such as periodontal diseases. Routinely including such things as lactic acid, calcium, and vitamins C and D in your diet have been shown to possibly reduce the occurrence of gum disease. So next time you go to the grocery store or sit down for a meal, remember: eat right to smile bright!

Dayana Special guest

Dayana Mendoza, who was crowned Miss Venezuela in 2007 and Miss Universe in 2008, was the special guest at Plaza del Duque‘s recent fifth anniversary celebration and fashion show.

On this, her second visit to the Canary Islands, Dayana had escaped from the New York Film Academy for a long weekend in Tenerife. As well as appearing in the Plaza del Duque fashion show, she was here for the inauguration of a new boutique, managed by her friend, designer Daniela Panaro. This boutique, called No pise la grama, is part of a successful Venezuelan company and is the first to open in Europe.

Meeting Dayana face to face, she is definitely one of the most beautiful women in the world. Born in 1986,

in Caracas, Venezuela (known affectionately as the eighth Canary Island), Dayana began modelling at the age of 15.

She enjoyed her year as Miss Universe, having been well prepared physically and spiritually, and says that her best memory is of her homecoming, of the amazing welcome that she received when she returned to Venezuela as Miss Universe – somewhat akin to the welcomes given to favourite football teams. During her reign, she travelled around the world with each country visited, and its culture, leaving a lasting impression on her. Following that busy year, understandably, all she wanted to do was turn off her phone, her PC, disappear, sleep, and sleep some more.

Returning to the real world, despite her original plans to study interior design, the opportunity to join the New York

academy became too tempting. Dayana finds acting school really exciting and she enjoys doing short films. She is in her second semester of a two year scholarship and has now decided to concentrate on acting, so maybe we will see her on the big screen soon.

Meanwhile, Dayana has worked alongside her friend Daniela for some time, and always wears one of her designs. She says, “It’s me, I feel comfortable in them. I love to wear her clothes, I love everything she makes”.

Valle de Guerra, Tacoronte, El Sauzal From the TF-5 motorway, take the TF-154 which joins El Portezuelo with the agricultural district of Tegueste. Continue into Valle de Guerra and to the coastal villages of Bajamar, Punta del Hidalgo and El Pris which is a fishing village with a small beach and several small restaurants specialising in fresh fish.

Returning to Tacoronte, we pass the Anthropology Museum on the right and head down to Mesa del Mar where we park near

some huge seawater pools. Walking through the tunnel brings you to Playa de la Arena, an extremely popular natural beach with a flagstone path which runs along the rocky coast.

The district of Tacoronte is one of the most important areas for the cultivation of grapes in Tenerife. The town centre is steeped in history, has a thriving agricultural market, a busy main street, a natural coastline, and in its upper reaches, on the opposite side of the motorway, Madre del Agua, near Agua GarcĂ­a which is a

worthy of a museum, but also many examples of Canarian architecture including La Casona, a house said to be the oldest building in Tacoronte.

Clustered together are La Alhóndiga, El Calvario and Parque Hamilton. Until the end of the 19th century La Alhondiga was the most important building in town. The upper level was used as a grain store while the lower level was a slaughterhouse, bakers, and even a jail! It is now used for cultural activities and as a base for events promoting Canarian wines.

El Calvario is a walled-in precinct housing a sanctuary with three statues and a large wooden cross, which still plays an important role in the Easter processions. Directly opposite La Alhóndiga is the entrance to the attractive Parque Hamilton, home to many plants, shrubs and trees endemic to the Canaries. It also has a section dedicated to various methods of grapevine cultivation.

El Sauzal is a picturesque and carefully preserved town with beautiful examples of traditional Canarian architecture, well tended gardens, churches, plazas, many good restaurants,

and an auditorium. The area’s main activity is agriculture, the main crops being grapes, potatoes, cereals and fruits. Worth visiting is the Iglesia de San Pedro in the centre, with its distinctive white-washed dome. Nearby is a steep and narrow lane which leads to a leisure area called Los Lavaderos. Lavaderos are pools, supplied with water which runs down from the mountains. Years ago, they were an essential part of everyday life, where the workers and the townswomen gathered to wash their clothes.

Families would also go there to collect the fresh water for domestic use, filling barrels or smaller vessels which they would either carry home on their heads, or on barrows. Nowadays, beautifully restored and tastefully planted out, this forms an attractive and quiet leisure area.

La Baranda, a 17th century Canarian farmhouse, is located on the outskirts of the town. Now owned by the Tenerife Government, La Baranda houses the Casa del Vino (House of Wine) and the Casa de la Miel (House of Honey), which promote local wines and honeys, and their respective museums.

Hispano-Suiza History The name Hispano-Suiza still sets pulses racing, because of the company’s legendary history in both automobiles and aviation. For more than a century, its brand image has evoked quality, innovation, ruggedness and lightness, qualities which are just as much in evidence today. It was the car of Pablo Picasso, Greta Garbo and even Albert Einstein.

It all began in 1899 when Marc Birkigt, a young Swiss engineer, set up shop in Barcelona and developed an internal combustion engine for the company La Cuadra. In 1904, Birkigt and Spanish banker Damian Mateu established their own company, contributing, respectively, capital and patents, and La Cuadra was renamed HispanoSuiza, in honour of the nationalities of its two co-founders. Former Spanish King Alfonso XIII (the grandfather of today’s King Juan Carlos I) should have been involved in the start up of the company.

In 1911 Marc Birkigt set up a Hispano-Suiza plant in Levallois, near Paris, to manufacture automobile chassis and engines, and in 1914 the company opened another plant near Paris, in Bois-Colombes, to assemble and sell luxury cars manufactured in Spain. By 1916, it was supporting the war effort by producing aircraft engines, especially for the SPAD VII flown by French ace Georges Guynemer. His squadron was known as The Stork, and this emblem was adopted by Hispano-Suiza in honour of the valiant pilots of the First World War. 28

Following the war, the company applied its expertise to cars, aircraft, boats and trains.

Hispano-Suiza introduced the elegant H6 32CV, nicknamed the French Rolls Royce, at the first post-war motor show, and decorated it with the Stork emblem. In 1923, Hispano-Suiza became an independent company, no longer a subsidiary of the original Spanish one.

Hispano-Suiza continued through the Second World War, dedicating all its resources to weapons, and supplying engines, propellers and guns for French fighters. After the armistice, the Bois-Colombes plant was requisitioned. Some of the machines and tools were shipped to Tarbes, in southwest France but bombing by the Allies partially destroyed it.

Hispano-Suiza emerged from the war weakened, but determined, manufacturing jet engines for Rolls-Royce, specifically the Nene and the Tay, and then it developed a more powerful engine, the Verdon which powered the historic Dassault Mystère IVA. Between 1950 and 1970, the company came up with a series of innovative solutions for transport and nuclear markets including power transmissions, ejection seats (under Martin Baker licence), turboprops, braking systems, landing gear (Concorde and Caravelle), industrial gas turbines, turbochargers for diesel engines and robots for nuclear facilities.

From the mid-seventies there were a series of mergers and the like, but the name remains the same and Hispano-Suiza has never stopped.

and two Germans are backing today’s development of the project. They are looking for an industrial plant in Zug, Switzerland although they still have not received confirmation that they can use the name Hispano-Suiza.

And now.....

The new Supercharged V10 Switzerland’s latest limited edition production car made its world debut in Geneva in March, reviving a name which once adorned some of the world’s most expensive cars. That tradition has not been broken, this vehicle retails for a mere €700,000. At first glance, that seems just a little excessive, considering that it is largely based on the Audi R8 5.2, which sells for €163,210 in Germany.

Look a little deeper and you will find that while the company does in fact start off with an Audi R8 5.2, they completely take it apart, stretch the front of the spaceframe, fit a completely new interior (you do get door pull handles, a Bang & Olufsen stereo, vents, and more for your money) and replace each body panel. That doesn’t leave much of the Audi R8. The long, low, angular looks were designed by Erwin Leo Himmel (Audi 19821994, VW Group Design Centre Europe 19951999, Fuore 2000-2007), and the body is made entirely of carbon fibre, reducing the vehicle’s weight by 30 kilos.

The suspension is all uniquely Hispano-Suiza and the centre-lock 22-inch aluminium-titanium alloy wheels are fitted with Michelin Pilot Sport PS2 tyres, 275/25 front, 295/25 rear. Customers can choose a six-speed manual or auto-clutch manual gearbox. Supplying the power to all four wheels is a 5.2-litre V-10 which has been modified

by Motoren Technik Mayer (MTM), and fitted with twin electric superchargers which, together with other modifications, boost output to 739hp and 516 pound-feet of torque. That’s enough to launch the car to 62 mph in 3.4 seconds and onward to a top speed of 211 mph, and to make sure the car stops in a hurry, it has carbon ceramic brakes fitted as standard.

Orders are being taken now for delivery in six months, and plans are already underway for a hybrid version with a 150-horse electric motor driving the front wheels, providing a total of 889 horsepower and short-range electric-only propulsion for city centre driving or shopping trips. There is a convertible version planned for 2011 too, based on the new R8 Spyder. Hurry up and get your name on the list as Hispano-Suiza only plans to build 20 to 25 of these handmade supercars each year, creating about 40 jobs.

Alicia Keys Alicia Keys is singer, songwriter, pianist extraordinaire, producer, author, news correspondent, award winner, philanthropist and actress.

For her, prosperity isn’t measured financially but through passion, self-fulfillment and life experiences. It’s this philosophy which has made this songstress a master of endless promise and impressive achievements Born and bred in New York’s Hell’s Kitchen, she was strongly influenced by music from many different generations and disciplines including the essential music of Nina Simone, Donny Hathaway, Marvin Gaye and Stevie Wonder; classical compositions of Frederic Chopin, Erik Satie, and Leontyne Price, as well as urban lyricists such as Tupac Shakur, The Notorious B.I.G., Jay-Z and the Wu-Tang Clan.

From the age of seven, she began formal training in classical piano and jazz stylings of Oscar Peterson, Fats Waller, and Marian McPartland with her instructor Margaret Pine, and later attended the Professional Performing Arts School and was introduced to the art of songwriting and producing.

She was discovered by manager Jeff Robinson in Harlem when she was 14 and went on to perform anywhere she could, from tiny clubs to street corners. Two years later, she received a 46

scholarship for and briefly enrolled in Columbia University before leaving to pursue a music career.

The road was far from being easy, but Alicia’s eclectic education and early life lessons inspired her musical hybrid of soul, hip-hop, jazz and classical.

Nowadays, she continues to be active in various humanitarian projects as well as music, film, and production. To date she has won 13 Grammy awards out of 24 nominations, 10 out of 15 Billboard awards, three out of eight MTV awards,

and the list goes on. Her most recent success was the smash hit Looking for Paradise, an English/Spanish language duet with Alejandro Sanz. Now she is set to appear here in Tenerife, in the Port precinct, Santa Cruz on June 6 at 9pm.

Summer specials The summer and with it, the classic summer tournaments at Tenerife’s golf courses are just around the corner. As with every summer, local golfers can take advantage of various trials, tournaments and championships every weekend until the end of October.

Once again, we will have the classic hotel tournaments at the southern golf courses. Hotel Jardín Tropical will be celebrating its popular event on June 5 at Abama, and on the same day Spring Hotels have organised their tournament to take place at Golf del Sur. On June 26, Villacortés will be repeating their tournament at Golf Las Américas where the Iberostar Anthelia tournament will also take place, closing the season on September 18.

The Mercedez-Benz and Cadena Ser tournaments are scheduled for May 22 at Golf 48

Las Américas and June 26 at Abama respectively.

The Canarian Golf Federation has organised the Canarian Amateur Championship for May 13 to 15 at Golf Las Américas in which 90 golfers with the lowest handicaps can participate. Also under the umbrella of the Federation, there will once again be the Fred Olsen Challenge which will take the most promising young Spanish professional golfers to La Gomera between June 24 and 27, with a preliminary Pro-Am on June 23.

And that’s not all, the IX edition of the Tenerife Ladies Open once again offers us the opportunity to enjoy four days with a selection from the panorama of European feminine golf from July 1 to 4 at the spectacular Buenavista Golf Course. As a preliminary, only the fortunate few will be able to take part in the popular Pro-Am, playing with some of the best female professionals in the world of golf. If you haven’t MAY 2010

yet reserved your place for this tournament and are available, confident in your drive and your putting, then come to Buenavista Golf on May 29 to play in the Plazas ProAm Tenerife Ladies Open tournament.

A new tournament begins this summer at Golf Costa Adeje on June 5. It is a beneficial tournament for Ingenae Yami to raise funds towards the construction of a village for orphaned children in South Africa.

place during the summer holiday season: the classic Aymerich circuit at Golf del Sur and the IV Circuit Tenerife-La Gomera with trials in which six golf courses in the province will compete.

New TaylorMade drivers Introducing the R9 SuperTri driver, which combines FCT and MWT with three movable weights in a 460cc head, marking the ultimate unification of TaylorMade’s major driver technologies with maximum size to deliver massive distance and forgiveness.

The R9 SuperTri was made possible by two crucial developments by TaylorMade engineers that saved enough weight to allow FCT and MWT to coexist in a 460cc head.

The first is better, more widespread use of TaylorMade’s Ultra-Thin Wall technology throughout the clubhead. The second is a new, lighter FCT sleeve that does everything the former one did while weighing three grammes less.

FCT + MWT + 460cc = Supreme Adjustability, Distance and Forgiveness The impact of incorporating FCT and MWT into a 460cc head is enormous. The larger head is more forgiving, and its CG is two millimetres further back in the head than the R9 driver, making it easier to launch the ball higher and with more spin, helping players gain more distance. At the same time, the inclusion of MWT with three weights promotes a side-to-side trajectory change of up to 75 yards.

Inverted Cone Technology (ICT) is also a crucial piece of the R9 SuperTri’s makeup.

Though it’s milled onto the back of the clubface where it’s out of sight, ICT plays a critical role by dramatically increasing the area of the clubface that delivers fast ball speed, promoting more distance on off-centre hits.

The R9 SuperTri’s clubhead is sleeker than previous R9 driver heads, thanks to a reshaped crown which reduces wind resistance. Though the shape is more aerodynamic, the face is the deepest (62mm) TaylorMade has ever incorporated into a driver with MWT, and is deeper than most other competitive drivers currently on the market.

Visually, the R9 SuperTri clubhead is a killer, thanks to its new shape and its black-onblack colour scheme, including a black PVD clubface last seen in the R7 SuperQuad.

The R9 SuperTri is equipped with a Fujikura Motore 60-gramme shaft, which is five grammes lighter than the Motore 65 used in the R9 driver. In addition to being lighter, the Motore 60 makes it easier to launch the ball on a higher launch angle and at a higher spin-rate, which helps many players achieve longer carry for increased distance.

The R9 SuperTri unites four viable performance technologies: FCT, MWT, UTW and ICT. Never before have four such impactful, performance enhancing technologies been combined so effectively in a single driver. Plus, there’s the superior aerodynamics of the new crown shape.

The R9 SuperTri and R9 SuperTri TP are the most advanced, highest-performing drivers TaylorMade has ever developed. The distance producing power and shot straightening abilities created by their combined clubhead size, clubhead design, performance technologies and shaft specifications make them clubs that no golfer should be without.

The R9 SuperTri includes three weights (16-gramme, 1-gramme, 1-gramme) and an FCT torque wrench. It’s available in four lofts (8.5, 9.5, 10.5, 11.5) and five shaft flexes (L, M, R, S, X). RRP is €379 (£329).
