Elegía-Homenaje / El Café de Chnitas SPANISH NATIONAL BALLET, JUNE 12TH, 9PM, AUDITORIO DE TENERIFE, SANTA CRUZ
The Spanish National Ballet perform in Tenerife for the first time in their history and will present two very distinct
dances, different in style, motivation and inspiration, Elegía-Homenaje (by Antonio Ruiz Soler) and El Café de Chinitas The first is a work conceived by Antonio Ruiz Soler, who died 13 years ago and was (and is) rightly considered one of the stars of Spanish ballet. This dance, to music composed by Joaquín Turina, is a personal interpretation of one of the most important events in Spanish dance abroad, featuring
the triumph of Rosario and Antonio in the USA. According to the director of the Spanish National Ballet, José Antonio, E Café de Chinitas is a seductive work, drawing inspiration from the symbols of Dali, using music from songs by Federico García Lorca, and is, says Antonio, a reference point for “el Arte Flamenco”. More information/reservations: Telephone: 903317327 www.auditoriodetenerife.com
Ann Hampton Callaway ANN HAMPTON CALLAWAY & TENERIFE SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA, JUNE 24TH, 8.30PM, AUDITORIO DE TENERIFE, SANTA CRUZ
Ann Hampton Callaway possesses a remarkable voice and an insatiable creative spirit! She is an acknowledged fan of the great American Songbook, and has made her mark as a singer, pianist, composer, lyricist, arranger, actress, educator, TV host and producer. Though possibly best known for Tony-nominated performance in the hit Broadway musical Swing! and for writing and singing the theme song to the hit TV series The Nanny, Callaway is a Platinum Award winning writer whose songs are featured on five of Barbra Streisand’s recent CD’s. She is the only composer to have collaborated with Cole Porter, she has also written songs with Carole King, Rolf Lovland
and Barbara Carroll to name a few. A born entertainer, her unique singing style blends jazz and traditional pop, and her performances showcase her warmth, spontaneous wit and passionate delivery of standards, jazz classics and originals. She is one of
America’s most gifted improvisers, taking words and phrases from her audiences and creating songs on the spot, whether alone at a piano or with, as in this case, a symphony orchestra. This vocal virtuoso has sung with more than twenty-five of the world’s top orchestras and big bands, and calling her the 21st Century’s Ella Fitzgerald wouldn’t be too far from the truth, but she has perhaps a broader appeal, having worked with a handful of other musicians and song writers to break down the barriers between musical styles. Corpus Christi La Orotava, June 10
Many towns decorate their streets and plazas with flower and sand carpets to celebrate Corpus Christi. The most notable of these is La Orotava where the giant 950 square metre carpet is
of a different (usually religious) design each year, taking several weeks to prepare. During its manufacture and when it is complete on Thursday 10th June, this giant carpet, which this year
is based on the Last Supper and three works by Dali with a delightful border of flowers and butterflies, will be contemplated by thousands of visitors. Adding to the magical atmosphere are the surrounding streets which are carpeted with sand and flower petals giving off a wonderful perfume. Finally, a religious procession at 6pm that evening destroys them all. In the words of the poet Quevedo, “is it not perchance the fugitive that remains and lasts?....Do not strive to keep alive what, because it is perfect, must die. Fiestas of San Isidro Labrador continue throughout June in La Orotava, and beautiful Corpus Christi carpets can also be seen in La Laguna, with smaller versions in other towns around the island.
Fiestas of San Juan June 23-24
The arrival of the summer solstice is welcomed on 24th June. On the night before, this is celebrated with bonfires not only on the coasts but in villages at higher altitudes as well. On many beaches the party around the bonfire continues into the early hours, some with fireworks displays. The night of San Juan is celebrated in San Juan de la Rambla, Granadilla, La Victoria, Los Silos, Tacoronte, Icod de los Vinos (San Marcos), Las Teresitas, Puerto de la Cruz, Punta del Hidalgo, Playa San Juan and many more.
On June 24, in various coastal locations, especially Puerto de la Cruz, livestock such as goats are
brought down from the mountainous areas to the coasts to be bathed in the sea.

Stress-free beach time with LBF
Sun, sea and skin-care There are so many wonderful advantages to living and holidaying in the sun, the sun has many life-enhancing properties, and in general a day or two spent relaxing by the sea makes us feel so much better, but we are also becoming increasingly aware of the damage over exposure to the sun’s harmful rays can do.
Build up exposure time slowly
Skin cancer is one of the most common cancers in the world, with one of its many causes linked to over exposure to the sun. Sunburn damage to the skin is permanent and cumulative, meaning that the damage from each sunburn episode builds upon that from previous occasions. And even on a cloudy day 80-85 per cent of solar ultraviolet radiation can pass through, damaging unprotected skin. Your skin can not build up immunity either – just because you live here and are more tanned than newly arrived holidaymakers doesn’t give you any extra bonus protection. The only thing that will protect you and your skin is a proper skin care and protection regime. That’s why the general rules about sunbathing apply to everyone, such as avoiding the sun between midday and 4pm. If you have just arrived you should also introduce your skin to the sun gradually, building up exposure, just 30 minutes on the first day, and making sure to use a good after-sun care product daily. LBF (Leading Beauty Farms) have just introduced a superb range of sun protection products under 10

LBF’s Oil-free sun care cream for face and body, SPF 15, leaves the skin moisturised and better toned. Its ingredients include Lycium Barbarum (Goji Berries), Himalayan Raspberry Root extract, Mallotus Bark Extract, Frangipani, and Alba Flower extract, and promises to promote a deep, even and long lasting tan and their after-sun face cream includes blue lotus flower extract, the oils of which are splendid for the face’s health and tone. Getting married in Tenerife Civil and religious (Roman Catholic, Protestant, Jewish and Muslim) marriages can be celebrated in Spain for people over 18. So, you fall within this category and have been looking at exotic honeymoon destinations, checking your guest lists, considering venues, and everything else that is necessary to create your perfect day. The main documents you are likely to need to have professionally translated are: your birth certificate, certificates indicating where you have lived for the past two years – if you have moved around Spain you need one for each municipality. Declaration of faith in the state, copies of your NIE or passport, documental proof of whether banns need to be announced in your country of origin, and finally a certificate proving you are in a position to be married. If you are a divorcee, you will need your previous marriage and divorce certificates. For more information about how to apply for civil or religious marriages here in Tenerife, visit the British Consular website at http://ukinspain. fco.gov.uk/en/help-for-british-nationals/livingin-spain/marriage-in-spain.

It was also the home of the first tourists to visit the island when, in those days before we had airports and motorways, the only way to get there was by a long and arduous journey on horseback from the port of Santa Cruz or Garachico. To enjoy one of the best views of the valley and of the districts of La Orotava, Los Realejos and Puerto de la Cruz, make your way along the TF-
211 to the Humboldt Mirador (viewpoint). The town of La Orotava itself has a good shopping centre and a historical quarter which must not be missed. Here you will find some of the best architecture, civil and religious, in the Canary Islands. This has led to this part of the town being designated as an Artistic and Historical Composite by central government and, thanks to its architectural splendour, an Inventory for Protection of the European Cultural Heritage. Park your car, wander along the cobbled streets and admire the many buildings of interest, including churches and museums which will be open to the public. The best starting point is the Plaza del Ayuntamiento from where you can

craftwork with over 7,000 items from America and Spain on display. The town of La Orotava occupies the upper part of the valley and Puerto de la Cruz, today’s tourist district, occupies much of the coast. One of the first holiday resorts in Europe, in the 17th century it was selected by the Kingdom of Castile as the location for the Botanical Garden for the Acclimatisation of Species from America and Asia due to its exceptional climate. Puerto de la Cruz balances its origins as a fishing and trading village with its past and present role as a tourist resort. A walk through this lively town will take you from Lago Martiánez to the busy Plaza del Charco, a popular meeting place. The chapel of San Telmo, Plaza de Europa, Casa Miranda, Casa de los Iriarte, the parish church of La Peña de Francia and the Customs House, now the tourist information centre, exhibition centre and craft shop, are all places of great interest. 26
The streets are always busy and there are plenty of terraces where you can enjoy a coffee or snack and some people-watching. For some tranquillity, visit the splendid gardens of Parque Taoro and enjoy the magnificent views of the coast, or the beach at Playa Jardín which runs between the Castillo de San Felipe and Punta Brava. The Orotava Valley also includes Los Realejos, a town which combines its agricultural and festive traditions with its own natural beauty. More than 50 per cent of its area is declared to be a natural protected space. The nearby Playa del Socorro has a reputation for great surfing conditions and paragliding.

The new BMW 5 Series Saloon The launch of each new generation of the BMW 5 Series Saloon is in itself an iconic moment in motoring history. Throughout its 38-year evolution, it has always been relevant, class leading and cutting edge. Inside, dynamics and elegance are represented in one flowing movement from the instrument panel to the door. All the high-quality control elements are ergonomically positioned for a perfect fit as soon as you take a seat. With the BMW TwinPower Turbo V8 engine in the BMW 550i you can enjoy 300 kW (407hp) or an impressive 600 Nm from 1,750 rpm. The secret is the turbochargers in the V between the cylinders. It takes only five seconds to reach 100 km/h. The six-cylinder petrol engines in the BMW 523i, 528i and 535i have won the Engine of the Year Awards six times. In the BMW TwinPower Turbo in the BMW 535i they are combined in one package. The result: 225 kW (306 hp), 400 Nm across a wide speed range and silky smoothness, with fuel consumption of just 8.5 l/100 km. The six-cylinder engine in the BMW 523i and 528i gives smoothness and high performance. It is one of the lightest six-cylinder engines in its class, giving 150 kW (204 hp) in the BMW 523i, 190 kW (258 hp) in the BMW 528i and fuel consumption of 7.6 or 7.8 l/100 km. The six-cylinder diesel engines in the BMW 525d and 530d provide up to 180 kW (245 hp) and fuel

consumption of 6.2 l/100 km. 180 kW (245 hp) and 540 Nm in the BMW 530d, 150 kW (204 hp) and 450 Nm in the BMW 525d. With maximum torque from 1,750 rpm, the BMW 530d reaches 100 km/h in 6.3 seconds while the BMW 525d needs just 0.9 seconds more. The four-cylinder diesel engine in the BMW gives 380 Nm and 135 kW (184 hp), levels most engines never achieve. The engine in the BMW 520d does this on just 4.9 litres over 100 kilometres and with just 129g/km CO2 emissions. A pleasant side effect is that you only have to stop for fuel every 1,400 kilometres. Brake Energy Regeneration replaces energy during braking to charge the battery. As soon as you take your foot off the accelerator the generator engages and converts excess kinetic energy into electrical energy. The BMW electromechanical power steering is only active when you need it. With BMW EfficientDynamics technology, the steering is supported by an electric motor and only works when the steering wheel is turned. Eight-speed automatic transmission not only ensures incredibly soft changes and reduces background noise at high speeds, it also significantly reduces fuel consumption. The Auto Start Stop function switches off the engine when the vehicle is not moving or if you disengage the clutch. The engine starts immediately when the clutch is engaged. This june 2010

BMW EfficientDynamics technology is used in the BMW 520d with manual transmission. Improved aerodynamics and short cold-run phases help reduce consumption and emission levels from the start. Integral Active Steering gives a new, flowing driving feel, with more agility and stability.
With Dynamic Driving Control, fitted as standard, a touch of the paddle next to the gearshift lever changes the level of driving pleasure from Normal to Sport: the engine responds more spontaneously and the eight-speed transmission Steptronic lets the engine rev high before quickly changing up. The Comfort mode is available with Dynamic Damping Control giving both the driver and passengers maximum comfort on longer journeys. With Dynamic Drive the Dynamic Damping Control has been extended to Adaptive Drive. Equipped with active roll reduction, the car glides through bends with ease and comfort. Safety features abound on the New BMW 5 Series. One second and 28 metres. This is how long it takes to take your eyes off the road and read the speedometer. Head-Up Display projects your current speed into your direct field of vision on the windscreen. More data can be displayed here too. BMW ConnectedDrive technology includes Lane Guiding, Lane Change and Lane Departure Warning, pedestrian recognition from BMW Night Vision plus warnings of the possibility of running into the back of the vehicle in front. See the most important things first. A radar sensor with a range of 200 metres constantly measures the
distance between you and the vehicle ahead and recognises which lane the vehicle is in. Up to five cameras give a clear view of any situation. Two front-end Side View cameras provide images which are displayed in the Control Display to give you a clear view when parking. The Rear View camera also provides welcome support. Interactive lane lines in the image show you if the parking space is large enough. You can even attach a trailer to the tow bar without further assistance. The Top View cameras in the wing mirrors complete the package. Superior safety features are included for passengers as well as increased safety for third parties involved in collisions. At the rear of the vehicle the Lane Change Warning uses radar sensors to inform you via a symbol on the wing mirror if there is a vehicle currently in the blind spot or if a vehicle is approaching quickly from the rear. The camera positioned at the front of the vehicle assists the Lane Departure Warning system. BMW Night Vision, part of BMW ConnectedDrive, sees in the dark and warns the driver of any approaching danger located outside the range of the headlights. An infrared reveals objects and persons up to 300 metres ahead of the vehicle. Should the system detect any danger of a collision, the driver receives a warning on the Control Display or on the Head-Up Display.

Restaurant 88 The long wait is over, with the latest addition to the Venture Group of restaurants, the south of Tenerife has a restaurant that delivers on every level.

The luxury Oriental Restaurant 88 is just that bit different, described as a Sushi, Dim Sum and Noodle Bar in an idyllic spot in La Caleta, Costa Adeje. La Caleta has always been a small fishing village, and although there has been much development over recent years, it still retains that magical, laid-back, escape from the real world feeling which continues to attract residents and tourists alike. This is where you can really try the traditional foods which people eat regularly in Oriental countries, and transport yourself to that very special place for a few hours. At Restaurant 88 there are the unquestionable qualities of bespoke, stunningly designed interiors and super professional and friendly staff which have become the hallmark of all the restaurants in the group: Teppenyaki, Bianco and Bianco Duo. With the benefit of one of the best locations in the south and the stunning views of the Atlantic Ocean, Restaurant 88 is elevated to one of the ultimate dining experiences. Restaurant 88 is the first time Robert Ng (Slow Boat Oriental, Teppenyaki, Bianco and Bianco Duo) has worked with cousin Lee Ng. Their fathers first collaborated over 30 years ago on what was then one of the first distributors in the UK of specialist Chinese ingredients. Lee’s father continued in distribution and owned one of the largest companies in Europe, specialising in high end Chinese foods and ingredients. Rob’s june 2010

father moved into restaurants, initially creating the hugely popular and influential Mandarin in Liverpool before moving to Tenerife where he built the Slow Boat group of restaurants. Restaurant 88 brings together for the first time this extensive knowledge of and access to specialist Chinese ingredients and over 16 years of designing, building and running high end restaurants. With such strong connections and rich family histories embedded within the world of Oriental food and restaurants and with both the Eastern 36
and Western perspectives it comes as no surprise that the food in Restaurant 88 is something very special indeed. A lifelong ambition for Robert and Lee, it manages to combine the two elements perfectly - the clean, crisp and sharp flavours of the East with the complex richer tastes of the West. A normal menu at an oriental restaurant will contain up 200 separate dishes. At Restaurant 88 the menu has been reduced to enable Robert and Lee to focus all of their effort and time to perfect the carefully selected dishes. june 2010

Laksa Soup Noodle, served as a deeply fragrant soup with King Prawns and Japanese Udon Noodles. Or try for a main course, Fillet Steak with cracked Black Pepper topped with fresh spring onion. It is a Maki roll which is topped with a layer of salmon, then a further strip of baked salmon skin, blow torched to melting point in order to merge the textures. Tasting the food on this menu, while sat in this stunning restaurant and enjoying the breath taking views, I find myself realising that just as Teppenyaki achieved six years ago, Restaurant 88 seems to be raising the bar once again. Around the world on a cruise ship by Gerald Ruben
The Samoan group of islands lies in the centre of the South Pacific, surrounded in a clockwise direction by Tokelau, the Cook Islands, Tonga, Fiji and the Elice Islands. If that still leaves you a little disorientated, they are 2,300 miles SSW of Honolulu and 1,800 miles NNE of Auckland, but don’t worry, the captain knows where he is going. Since 1899 they have been divided into American Samoa with seven islands and the new independent sovereign state of Samoa (formerly known as Western Samoa) with nine islands. The land area of Samoa is about the same as Dorset in England with the capital, seat of government, and centre of commerce in Apia, which is our port of call. Apia has an estimated population of about 40,000 out of a total of 180,000 plus, it lies halfway along the beautiful north coast of Upolu. The southeast trade winds blow from May to November, when the weather is at its driest and most pleasant. Heat and humidity are highest between December and April when most of the annual rainfall of 114 inches falls on
44
Apia, however Pago Pago the capital of American Samoa gets even more, 200 inches a year. As a matter of interest you might like to know that before the cyclones wiped it out, Taro used to be the staple diet as well as the main export. Now fish is the main export along with copra, coconut cream, and coconut oil, however the big money earner is tourism with the wonderful white sandy beaches fringed by palm trees and dense tropical vegetation making it a virtual paradise for holiday makers.
Photo: t m-t m
Our next stop is Apia, but where in the world is Apia? Well we need to step back a bit and start from the beginning. The very exoticism of the name Samoa is sufficient to conjure up visions of dusky maidens dancing beneath swaying palms.

The Samoans are Polynesian and closely akin to the Hawaiians in the North and the Maoris in New Zealand. Do be careful how you act when you are off the ship, the Samoans are very polite so you should never wear shoes if you are invited into one of their houses, sit cross-legged before speaking, never eat while standing or walking through a village and when passing in front of someone, you should bend and say ‘tulou’ (excuse me) and they will expect you to ask their permission before you take a photograph of them. Women should not wear bikinis, shorts or swimsuits except on the beach and at the poolside. Likewise, men should wear shirts except by the pool.
I
The Matai or head man of the village does no manual work, he looks after the interests of the family and its lands and dispenses summary justice. The Matai also spend a long time talking. The other men work in the family plantations whilst the women take care of the children and keep the house spic and span. Education is compulsory for all children, however enforcing this law is taking some time so you will still see children in the streets selling coconuts, vegetables and handicrafts. In our next edition we will tell you more, recommend activities, markets and eating places to visit, and give you some useful information and phone numbers.

profile
Simply Red The seeds of Simply Red were planted during a 1976 Sex Pistols’ gig at the Lesser Free Trade Hall in Manchester, at which art student Mick Hucknall was one of the many young music fans present, along with original members of the bands Joy Division, The Smiths and The Buzzcocks.
Mick Hucknall, Simply Red
46
Along with Hucknall the kernel of the band first played together as a punk band under the name The Frantic Elevators, splitting in 1984 with only limited local attention and critical acclaim for their final single Holding Back the Years. After the band’s demise Hucknall linked up with manager Elliot Rashman and soon they had a band together…the name Simply Red (a combination of Mick’s nick name ‘Red’ which Mick decided didn’t sound right on its own so, after a few changes, he added the word Simply) came soon after, and the band began to attract record company attention. The rest, as they say, is history. Now, 34 years later, Simply Red are on their Farewell Tour, and will be holding back the years for many concert goers when they play their only Spanish gig, in Costa Adeje Golf, on July 20th, courtesy of Sun Live Festival Canarias. Hucknall’s excellent voice is in as good a shape as ever, and the band’s repertoire is large and contains some classic hits. This will be the last chance to see the group play together.

golf Callaway Golf and Diablo Edge
Unleashing more power and performance in 2010 Callaway Golf wants to give every golfer more power, more fun and more wins in 2010 with the help of its hot new Diablo Edge range of products designed for all levels of player. The new range of Drivers, Fairway Woods and Hybrids (all available in Standard and Tour versions) plus the new Diablo Edge game improvement irons build on the existing success of the Diablo Forged Iron in delivering innovative design and step-change performance benefits to fill your game with power, accuracy, fun and success in 2010. Callaway Staff Professional and The European Tour’s longest driver, Alvaro Quiros, is the face of the new Diablo Edge range and he has already experienced the lightning fast speed and power of Diablo Edge. Available in the Golf Shop Las Chafiras and Costa Adeje Gran Hotel Golf Shop, Diablo Edge Driver is engineered using an ultra-thin four-piece titanium construction with improved aerodynamics. The Diablo Edge Driver generates incredibly high ball speeds thanks to a new precision manufacturing technique which precisely controls the thickness of the chemically-milled Hyperbolic Cup Face, delivering performance and distance even on off-centre hits. The Tour model was born out of feedback and testing from Callaway Golf’s Staff Professionals. It features a conventional head shape, full length hosel, less face progression, deeper and more forward centre of gravity to give the looks and performance (powerful, boring trajectory) more skilled golfers prefer. If you are in Tenerife on a golfing holiday this year and see the ‘win a holiday for a hole in one’ girl at the major golf courses, this is the background to the competition. ‘Win a holiday for a hole in one’ is the brainchild of Paul Smith, who owns two successful golf shops here and the Going Golfing Holidays company. Paul came up with the idea of rewarding a hole in one whilst helping a local charity at the same time. So how does it work? On the Par 3 at the competition stand, you pay a small fee of €10 and if you hit the green you win a sleeve of quality golf balls, a golf cap or a golf towel and if you are lucky enough to get the ball in the hole, ‘a hole in one’, you instantly win a holiday for next year for two people at the 5-star Costa Adeje Grand Hotel in the south of the island. 20 per cent of all takings will be going to the Orabel Children’s Charity. Orabel is a handicapped children’s centre in the south of Tenerife and a worthy cause supported by many on the island. Good luck!
