Dee Dee Bridgewater Dee Dee Bridgewater, July 12th, 9pm, Auditorio de Tenerife, Santa Cruz

Dee Dee Bridgewater is a Grammy Award winning American jazz singer and stage actress. She has also won a Tony Award and hosts her own programme, Jazz Set on NPR. Born Memphis, Tennessee in 1950,

her father was a jazz trumpeter and teacher at Manassas High School, and Dee Dee was exposed to jazz early on. By the age of 16 she was singing in clubs in Michigan, but did continue her studies to third level.

After her marriage to trumpeter Cecil Bridgewater, she moved to New York.

In the early 1970s, Dee Dee joined the Thad Jones-Mel Lewis Jazz Orchestra as lead vocalist, starting her jazz career proper.

She has performed all over the world and appeared at top jazz festivals down the years, including the Monterey Jazz Festival in 1973, and has performed on Broadway, winning a Tony for her role as Glinda the Good Witch in The Wiz. She performs here as part of the Festival de Canarias Jazz & Heineken.

Fimucité, Tenerife International Film Soundtrack Music Festival Concert Fimucité, July 9th/10th, 9pm Auditorio de Tenerife

This is the fourth year of this unique festival, dedicated to original scores and sound tracks for international films. Over the years the festivals have paid tributes to some of the great sound track composers, and this edition focuses on the works of, in the words of the festival director Diego Navarro, “one of the greatest composers of film history: John Williams”, with an obvious focus on the Williams - Spielberg creative tandem.

There will be concerts and events happening throughout the festival, from July 5th to 10th in a number of different locations, but fans of film won’t want to miss the concert

in the Auditorio on July 10th, where probably some of the film world’s most famous sound tracks will be played by the Tenerife Symphony Orchestra accompanied by the Tenerife Film Choir. Well known themes will include music from A Streetcar Named Desire, Spartacus and Battlestar Galactica.

Part II is a tribute to Williams and Spielberg and features music from Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark, Amistad, Schindler’s List, E.T., Superman, and many more.

Fiestas of San Roque Garachico, July 3 to August 16

Garachico was founded after the Spanish conquest of Tenerife in 1496 by the Genovese banker Cristobál de Ponte and it became the main port of the island, prospering in trade with Spain, Latin America and Europe.

However from the17th century the town’s luck changed for the worse.

Early in the century they were hit twice by pestilence, followed by a flood in 1645 which killed over 100 people. 14 years later a plague of locusts wiped out the crops and towards the end of the century two major fires swept through the town. The final straw was the eruption of the Trevejo volcano in 1706, which swept down the mountains, and permanently blocked the port. It was the end of Garachico’s great trading days. Miraculously

San Roque. In the Fuegos del Risco, a group of local volunteers, using sacks, pine cones, and various pyrotechnical tricks, recreate the sight of the lava flowing down the mountain to drown the town and block the port. It is an extraordinarily impressive vision and not to be missed.

If you’re looking for a reason to hop on the ferry and visit La Isla Bonita, now is the time. La Danza de los Enanos (the dance of the dwarfs) is one of the most popular events during the fiestas de la Bajada de la Virgen de Las Nieves in Santa Cruz de La Palma. An event celebrated only once in every five years and which lasts for over a month, it gives all of this beautiful island a fine excuse to party. The statue of the Virgen de Las Nieves abandons her sanctuary and comes down to the big city where various acts are celebrated

in her honour. In the first week of July, there are a number of concerts and exhibitions, and then there is the grand week when most of the traditional events take place, including the Danza

de los Enanos. For one whole night until sunrise, some 24 men with giant statues wearing the same costumes (which vary each edition) perform several songs and dances in a closed precinct, then they take to the streets, with more performances for those who haven’t yet managed to catch sight of them. Much more than a dance, it is an emotion which has to be felt. It takes place on July 15th.

There is though another part of our body that too often is neglected, and is just as susceptible to damage from the sun – our crowning glory, our hair. We spend loads of money cutting, setting, styling and colouring our locks, but when it comes to swimming and sunbathing, all too often forget to take care. Result – a head of dry, brittle, often frizzy hair, that takes away from the lovely tanned look we’ve spent ages trying to achieve.

The sun’s light waves are categorised by their intensity. There are three categories of light waves. These are UVA, UVB and UVC. The UVA and UVB can both damage the hair in a variety of ways. They can cause permanent damage to the outside covering of the hair, which is the cuticle and can penetrate into the centre of the hair, which is the cortex and do all sorts of damage.

Check with your hairdresser before any colour treatment

and they can penetrate into the hair’s deepest inner layer, which is the cortex. The UVA rays disturb the hair cortex’s fibre-like cells that give the hair its strength and elasticity. It can also damage the colour pigments that create natural hair color. The UVA rays can also burn the hair cuticle, which is the outer hair layer, causing hair to look lifeless and brittle.

UVA rays can also burn and damage unprotected scalp. It is even possible to burn the part of your hair where the scalp is unprotected. UVA rays can damage the skin on the scalp in many ways and activate free radicals, which accelerates aging.

A severe sunburn on the scalp has even been known to cause some cases of hair loss.

Ultraviolet B These are invisible rays that also can penetrate deep into the hair’s cortex or centre damaging the hair fibres. They can also damage the hair cuticle. UVB rays can easily dry out the hair and cause natural and chemical colours to fade.

Protection As with our skin, protection and prevention is better than trying to repair the damage done.

There are more and more hair care products now on the market, specifically designed to protect your hair and your scalp from the sun’s harmful rays. Check the labelling – some products will only contain a sunscreen, whereas others will also have a built in SPF (sun protection factor), and the same rules apply as when choosing a protection factor for skin.

Using natural products, such as coconut oil (maybe mixed with a little conditioner), which you should leave in while sunbathing, will also benefit your hair.

If you swim in a chlorine/chemically treated pool, rinse your hair before your swim, so that your hair absorbs the fresh water rather than the chemicals. If you can bear it, wear a swimming cap. Rinse after your swim too, to rid your hair of any sediment. There is also an ever increasing range of excellent hair protection products that are usually applied before and during your time in the sun, sea and pool. Many of these are also suitable for children’s hair which is finer and more susceptible to damage.

Some people recommend wearing a hat in the sun – though others suggest that a baseball cap acts as an oven and bakes your hair, thus damaging it.

Do try and cut down on hairdryer use – given the weather, hair will dry quickly enough naturally, and as we tend to wash our hair more often while living in the sun, the less over heating applied the better.

If you are going to have a colour treatment, do check with your hairdresser as to the possible effects of sun/chlorine on the colour and bear in mind that any dark tint will most likely fade much more quickly during the summer, more so if you are swimming frequently.

I’d like to be, under the sea…

Diving in the Canaries Because of the volcanic nature of the Canary Islands there are some fantastic rock formations and the sea bottom mainly slopes reasonably gently away from the shore, or gets deeper in steps off the layers of lava, giving superb scuba diving facilities suitable for novices right through to those who are vastly experienced.

The waters off the Canary Islands teem with marine life, and are the home for many cetaceans, and whale and

dolphin watching tours are a holiday feature off most of the islands.

The water is normally clear, giving excellent visibility with an average of approximately 20 metres. All seven of the Canary Islands offer scuba diving as a recreation, but the jewel in the crown for experienced divers is El Hierro, where the waters surrounding it were officially declared a marine sanctuary in 1996. It offers superb diving with sightings of Manta ray on a regular basis. Grouper fish here are almost as big as an adult human and

are extremely friendly.

Practically all of the centres have their own boat, usually a RIB (semirigid inflatable) to access the dive sites, although some of the sites are accessible from the shore. Some of the boats have ladders to make exiting the water as easy as diving from a hard boat, so avoiding the embarrassment of not being able to ‘bounce’ yourself over the side at the end of a dive. The dive sites are all within easy reach of the marinas meaning that the norm is for the boat to return to base between

dives, when refreshments may be taken, making it a very relaxing and friendly experience.

The diversity of the languages spoken by the instructors and staff at the dive centres means you should find a centre that caters for your individual needs, and all have web sites so you can check them out for your particular needs.

Another welcome feature of diving in the Canary Islands is that it is very rare for more than one or two dive groups to be at the same site simultaneously, so underwater overcrowding is not really an issue here. And given the year-round excellent climate there is no peak season that needs to be avoided either.

Once under the water the huge variety of fish and other residents of the deep blue are a delight, be you a regular diver or not. Rainbow and ornate wrasse, atlantic and blue damsel fish, parrot fish, different types of bream, scorpion and rock fish, together with trumpet fish, lizard fish and bastard grunt are in abundance on most of the sites. There are also examples of some rarer species to be found, including atlantic, eagle, butterfly and common stingrays, not forgetting the torpedo (or marbled electric) ray. Nudibranch and cuttlefish are also present. Grouper fish can be found in different sizes at depths as shallow as five metres and during the winter months, angel shark are regular visitors. There are many moray eels - black, brown and fang tooth morays are the most regularly seen. You may even catch a glimpse of streaked gurnard from time to time.

September 26: Masca ravine. A bus takes you from Los Gigantes to Masca where experts will guide your steps down the ravine for a three and a half hour hike to the beach. There kayaks await you for a three hour sea excursion back to your starting point.

The new lighter, more agile, powerful and fuel efficient Porsche Cayenne made its world debut at the Geneva Motor Show in March. Each model in the range is a trendsetter in terms of efficiency and output and, compared with former models, offers an increase in fuel economy of up to 23 per cent with more performance.

The highlight is the technically sophisticated parallel full hybrid drive-train which combines the sporting performance of an eight-cylinder with the economy of a six-cylinder and a unique ‘sailing mode’ for even lower fuel consumption.

Lightweight materials combined with changes in its overall concept, such as a new active and extra-light all-wheel drive transmission, have reduced the overall weight of the Cayenne S, for example, by 180kg. This has a very positive effect not only on fuel consumption and CO2 emissions, but also on performance, agility, and handling. Consequently, the new Cayenne offers greater driving quality both on- and off-road, together with enhanced safety and passenger comfort.

The principles of Porsche Intelligent Performance: more power on less fuel, greater efficiency and lower CO2 emissions, are manifest in the new Tiptronic S eightspeed automatic transmission featuring a wider spread of gear ratios, Auto Start Stop, optimised thermal management of cooling systems, on-board network recuperation, and intelligent lightweight construction.

Overall, the new Cayenne is 48 mm longer than its predecessor, but its design language represents a more compact and dynamic style which integrates the 2010 Cayenne into the Porsche range. This is apparent when you drive the car as it doesn’t have that cumbersome feel of a large vehicle, it just feels like an extremely nice car.

There‘s a powerful and low emission engine under each Cayenne bonnet

wheelbase. The most significant feature is the rising centre console which extends to surround the gearshift selector giving the high quality interior the typical Porsche ‘cockpit’ character. In the rear, the seat bench can move forwards and back by 160mm and the backrest angle has three different position settings. Electrically adjusted front seats ensure that drivers of all shapes and sizes can find the ideal seat position.

The Cayenne range starts with the 3.6-litre V6 300hp petrol engine. Fuel consumption has dropped by a fifth, in conjunction with the Tiptronic S automatic gearbox, to 28.5 mpg Combined (9.9 ltr/100km) on the NEDC. At 193g/km, the Cayenne S Hybrid is not only the cleanest version with the lowest emissions, but also the cleanest Porsche in the Company’s entire portfolio. The Cayenne S Hybrid features a 333hp drive-train with fuel consumption of 34.4mpg Combined (8.2 litres/100km) and CO2 emissions of 193g/km. In the interaction of the 3.0-litre supercharged V6 and the electric motor, the focus is on overall maximum efficiency. The 34kW (47 hp) electric motor is the ideal partner for the 333hp compressor engine with its high torque at low speeds. Together, they deliver maximum output of 380hp and peak torque of 580 Nm at just 1,000 rpm, with the same kind of performance as the Cayenne S with its conventional V8 petrol engine.

The Porsche interior resembles a cockpit

They are connected to one another by a separator clutch masterminded by the Hybrid Manager computer. This is essential to run the Cayenne S Hybrid either on its electric motor or combustion engine alone, or with both units operating together. Thus, under relaxed driving conditions, you can cover short distances on electric power alone and therefore absolutely emission free (and quiet too). Furthermore, you can drive in this mode at speeds approaching 40 mph (60 km/h).

Also, to ensure fast initial acceleration, the electric motor can provide additional thrust through its ‘boosting’ effect. The transition between the driving modes is inconspicuous, comfortable and fast. At the same time, the combustion engine may be completely switched off at speeds of up to 97 mph (156 km/h), being fully disengaged from the drivetrain when no further power is required.

In this ‘sailing mode’, cruising without power, the drag forces exerted by the combustion engine and their braking effect are eliminated in the interest of lowering resistance and thus further benefitting fuel consumption.

The Cayenne Diesel has a 240bhp (176 kW) threelitre V6 engine offering 550 Nm of power. In the new Cayenne, this powertrain now offers 20 per cent lower fuel consumption, with a Combined mpg of 38.2 (7.4 ltr/100 km), increased from 30.4 mpg (9.3 ltr/100km). Consequently, CO2 emissions are 195 g/km. juLY 2010

The maxim of more power on less fuel is demonstrated by the Cayenne S, which now features a 400hp high-torque 4.8-litre V8 petrol engine. With 15hp more than the prior model combined with greater economy, this new engine offers significantly better performance overall. Fuel consumption is down by 23 per cent, with a Combined mpg of 26.9 (10.5 litres/100km). This is the model we drove, and we found its acceleration, braking and steering absolutely excellent.

Greater efficiency is also an attribute of the Cayenne Turbo, with its 500bhp (368 kW) twin-turbocharged 4.8-litre V8 returning 27.6 mpg Combined (11.5 ltr/100 km) in the NEDC and also 23 per cent less than its predecessor.

Standard equipment on every Cayenne includes Porsche Traction Management (PTM) all-wheel drive, leather interior, dualzone automatic climate control, front and rear parking sensors, cruise control, audio system with 7-inch touch-screen, eight-way powered front seat adjustment, 18-inch alloy wheels, front and rear electric windows, and a 100-litre fuel tank. Our Cayenne S was also equipped with a sun roof, BOSE audio system, heated seats and sensors all round including warning lights on the door mirrors which inform you if there is a vehicle in your ‘blind spot’.

We were most impressed with the tailgate.

Push a button to open, and the struts take care of the rest. Push another button to close and the tailgate lowers and closes automatically. No struggling. There are three driving modes: Sport, Normal and Comfort which sets the suspension low, a useful feature for helping you to get in and out of the vehicle.

Fitted to every Cayenne S, S Hybrid and Turbo is a Porsche Vehicle Tracking System (VTS), a sophisticated vehicle security package approved to Thatcham Category 5 standard.

Fujiyama Fujiyama is a Japanese restaurant which has been open for more than four years, situated in the heart of Los Cristianos in the south of Tenerife, only a minute’s walk from the pedestrian area and the beach.

The words of Martin Luther King seen more than appropriate in the case of this house and the man who created it.

What started life as a 33 square metre box with no electric and water is now a beautiful family home nestled in the hills of the municipality of Granadilla, with stunning ocean views to Gran Canaria.

Martin who is a long time resident of Tenerife, had always lived in apartments here, where you

could hear every noise neighbours made. He dreamed of finding a place where he could have peace, quiet and solitude.

When he was shown ‘the box’, his first thought was no, it seemed too close to neighbours and not what he was searching for, but the agent left him for an hour to sit in his car and study the land. Finally a plan formed in his head, an image was created and by the time the agent returned, Martin had made his decision. He bought it.

It is hard now to imagine exactly how this dream became reality, but after years of work and planning, a magnificent, original home now stands in place of the ‘box’.

It is full of rustic charm, and hard to believe that most of the property is only a few years old.

Turning in to the house from a small hidden entrance you enter this secret haven, with its mature gardens with lots of little areas to down the odd gin and tonic.

Attention to detail, interesting corners and a cosy homely feel greet you as soon as you open the door, and rooms off a courtyard with a tranquil water feature give a real Spanish feel.

When you first see the photos of what Martin bought you instantly think “the man was crazy�, but he had a dream and the grit and determination to follow it through. The work was all done by Martin and a small team of helpers, at the most three but usually just two.

The house is a perfect example of what can be achieved by an unskilled, untrained person who has a clean sheet to work from, imagination, and the willingness to learn, to source materials economically without compromising quality, for example ends of lines for tiles, bath fittings, and large quantities of all the consumables such as screws, cables, piping etc. After four years of working three to four days a week, Martin had become a competent carpenter, plumber, passable sparky and adept at foreseeing problems.

Every part of this house was thought out, designed and built by Martin. He is The lounge theme is carried through to the dining area but with a lighter touch.

Past, Present and Future with Javier Cabrera, joint owner of the Monkey Bar & Grill and the Monkey Beach Club

Javier Cabrera certainly isn’t just monkeying around. He is a very well educated man who speaks perfect English.

He was born in Santa Cruz in September 1975 and attended the Colegio Aleman, spending all his childhood and teenage years in Santa Cruz as his family had not at that time entered the world of tourism. However, the stage had already been set long ago by his great grandfather, one of the pioneers of tourism in Puerto de la Cruz in the 50s and 60s, who also began the construction of the Gran Tinerfe hotel in Playa de las Américas but sadly passed away before it was completed.

The family returned to tourism in the mid to late 90s.

Javier studied business and economics at the University of La Laguna and finished the course in Madrid before travelling to London to study for his Masters in tourism in 2003. His father, José Fernando Cabrera, currently in his second term as president of the hotels association ASHOTEL, also studied in the UK. In January 2004, Javier began working in the family’s businesses. He opened his first restaurant in May 2004 in partnership with his brother Carlos – this was the Monkey Bar & Grill in Playa de las Américas – a business which has proved extremely successful and with which Javier is very happy.

from highly regarded property developer Santiago Puig. The existing beach club had been open since 1977, and the brothers closed it for ten months to refurbish everything from toilets to sound systems. The Monkey Beach Club opened to the public in April 2007.

Javier says, “Beach clubs have been successful around the world, in Monaco, Marbella, even Miami, and this was missing from Tenerife”.

Regarding the brothers’ partnership, Javier says, “Carlos is very creative, he has a degree in design, so he comes up with the ideas for décor, menus, t-shirts, etc. He also loves to cook and has many ideas which he conveys to the chef who has the skill to turn Carlos’ ideas into reality. I do more of the administrative work, managing the office, human resources and all the business and juLY 2010

financial side of things. It’s a good combination, well balanced”.

Javier told us that their latest project was to take over the nighttime operation of the Magic Lounge Bar. Jimmy Gómez, a successful entrepreneur, and his brother Pep are still in charge of the daytime running. Javier says, “They make a great job of that. We are just going to push the nighttime, club side of the venue, Magic at Night”. He says there will be different named parties including the Golden Mile Night Party, Monkey Magic and the 14-hour Love Sensations which begins at Monkey Beach and finishes at Magic. This is because under local laws, the Monkey Beach Club has to close at 12.30am.

In this regard, Javier told us about a new association which has been created by four businessmen in the South Tenerife leisure trade which includes bars, restaurants, pubs, discos, excursions, water sports, spas and lots more.

They have had two meetings already with the local authorities to put proposals to them which are intended to improve the harmony between local residents and the leisure businesses.

For the last two years, another association called Costa Adeje Nights has been operating to help business owners to share the heavy cost of advertising, especially with large billboards in key areas such as the airports, which can reach as much as €6,000 a month. Individual venues found it impossible to pay such high fees alone.

Talking of the current marketing policy for Tenerife, Javier told us his thoughts, “the authorities have associated ‘luxury’ tourism with older people and have forgotten that younger people spend a lot of money too. In Arona, they see the need for young people to come here again and they know that we are no longer competitive with other destinations. We have a good, high standard destination which could do with being organised a bit better. Tenerife seems to be on a permanent renewal and renovation.”

When asked about his secret of success, Javier was in no doubt: “Location. We have two venues in the best places, the Golden Mile in my opinion, is the best commercial centre in the Canaries.

we are lucky because our construction on Playa Troya is legal. We also do something different from the rest. In the Monkey Bar & Grill you can relax, eat, drink, have fun and there’s different décor and music. The Monkey Beach is a real beach club which we didn’t have before. There are clubs along the coast, but none of them have a real beach. Ours is unique.”

If you are thinking of starting up a new business, Javier advises you to consider the concept and location first, and focus the business on demand.

“We did this in the Monkey Bar & Grill 18 months ago, we changed the menu because it was too sophisticated and we moved towards a grill menu”.

Of the things which Javier considers most important for the future of Tenerife, he suggests, “more flexibility in the coastal laws, and a clear activities law because at the moment it takes five to ten years to open a bar legally. The process all needs to be simplified”. It is comforting to know that it is not only non-Spanish people who find the process very long and drawn out.

He feels that Tenerife has a chance but that the 48

mentality of the people (both public institutions and private businesses) has to change. “It is a complete destination, we have great weather, beaches, hotels, good cultural tourism. We have everything here on a small island including snow on Mount Teide in the winter. We just need to all pull in the same direction and someone, who we don’t have at the moment, needs to develop a common strategy regarding what we want to sell, and we all have to follow it”.

For the future, Javier says, “I have the capacity to open more venues, but the restrictions of the law are so stringent that I will not open any more until this changes”.

Born into a Tenerife family, he concluded, “I am proud of the island where I was born, I’m grateful for all the chances that Tenerife has given me in my professional life. I think we have to fight for Tenerife. We have all the ingredients for one of the best destinations in the world”.

Alejandro Sanz Alejandro Sanz is one of Spain’s leading singer/songwriters, and will perform at the Adeje football stadium on August 28th (10pm).
