Fiestas de la Virgen de Candelaria Alcalá, Guía de Isora, August

Locally known as the Fiestas de Agosto, this is the most important time of the year for the people of Alcalá. La Virgen de Candelaria is the patron of this village where the people spend all year preparing for her magic night of celebration, the 15th August. Before this, at midday the statue of the Virgin is carefully placed on board a fishing boat which travels along the coast towards Los Gigantes and back, so that everyone can see the spectacle. All the fishing boats in the area are decorated and they accompany the main vessel until the statue returns safely to land. There is also the traditional setting free of doves. The night of the 15th

is also popularly known as the night of the fireworks, a fabulous display which attracts spectators from all corners of Tenerife as well as the other Canary Islands to enjoy the party which continues until sunrise. During the fiestas, most windows and balconies in the village will be decorated with flags of Spain or Tenerife, and as part of these fiestas, Spanish singer David Civera will be performing on August 12th.

Fiestas de Candelaria Candelaria, August 14th and 15th

For a more multitudinous fiesta, this is the one for you. The appearance of the patron of the Canaries is celebrated on the 14th, with a representation of how the statue was found by the Guanches. During that day, hundreds of pilgrims walk to the town of Candelaria from all points of the island using the old caminos reales (royal paths, or shepherds’ and trading routes). Such is their devotion that some spend the night on those paths, but they all eventually reach the Plaza de la Basilica. The main event is the Romería and the Floral Offering when there will be much folk music and dancing, with

visitors coming from all corners of the archipelago. Later in the month, on the 31st, the Plaza de la Basilica hosts the final of the 15th Festival of Candelaria which is a musical talent contest. This will be followed (from 10pm) with a concert by Canarian singer-songwriter Rosana.

health & beauty

The holidays have arrived, so you’ll probably be going to the beach or spending time in and around the pool. Your body, including all those lumpy bits, will be bared to the elements. What better time than now to attack that cellulite – a condition most commonly suffered by women especially in the thigh and buttock area, consisting of small pockets of fatty tissue just beneath the skin’s surface which result in that uneven ‘orange peel’ effect. Nora Bode’s OxyJet Anti-Cellulite Treatment gives a longer lasting effect than many other treatments, is relaxing and enjoyable, and can enable you to feel proud of your body this summer. To prepare your skin for treatment, your beautician will stimulate the circulation in your legs (or whichever other part of your body is being treated) by brisk body brushing which leaves your skin tingling. She will massage

in an exfoliating cream to remove all the dead skin cells from the area leaving it more receptive to the treatment which will follow. Once this has been cleaned off, you are ready for the important part. Next comes a highly active Anti-

Cellulite Treatment Oil which is massaged well into the skin. This is a very firm and deep massage aimed at breaking down the cellulite, and once the oil has been at least partially absorbed, your beautician will apply the AntiCellulite Spray. This is where the OxyJet system comes in. Using a technique called Oxypuncture, which feels like ‘puffs’ of air against your skin and if anything tickles slightly, the Nora Bode OxyJet Anti-Cellulite Treatment pumps the deepest layers of the skin directly with an elixir of fat burning oxygen, with the highly-active Anti-Cellulite Treatment Oil and Anti Cellulite Spray which have been applied to the surface. Don’t be put off by the term Oxypuncture – there are no needles or surgery involved in this treatment, it is completely painless. When the oxygen, combined with the concentration of

synergenistic active ingredients that stimulate fat combustion and tissue tightening, hit the cellulite stores, the circulation is immediately stimulated. Fat is broken down and the lymphatic system kicks in, expelling waste and diminishing cellulite. As the ingredients dissolve the fat cells, the result is a tightening and firming of the skin, a toning effect and importantly for the cellulite sufferer, this treatment reduces the appearance of cellulite giving a smooth, more toned and firm look and feel. The improvements that you will see immediately following your treatment are clear to see, but that’s not all – the ingredients which have been pumped into the deepest layers of your skin continue working, and you will see even more effects two to three days afterwards. Your skin just continues to improve! One session can give great results, but it is recommended that you have five weekly treatments for optimum effect. The good news is that this treatment is well within reach of 10

even the most modest pocket, takes only an hour, and leaves you feeling wonderfully relaxed. So go ahead, get your legs in shape, be proud of them and show them off on the beach this summer! You can book your OxyJet Anti-Cellulite Treatment at Zenzi, C.C. El Camison, Local No. 53, Playa de las Américas, or phone 922 798 587 and 678 011 341.

Finally the utmost in adventure is offered by Playa de Antequera in Igueste de San Andrés (also nudist). Access to this most peaceful of beaches in a dreamlike bay is only possible by a boat trip from San Andrés or Santa Cruz or by a three hour guided hike through the hills, but the tranquillity and privacy on offer make it well worth the effort. august 2010

Mercedes-Benz AMG convoy Mercedes-Benz dealers Victoria S.L. have always been known for their high level of customer care. As well as their excellent after sales service, they also organise events for their clients from time to time including golf tournaments and tennis or padel matches.

Most clients were very happy with the vehicles they drove

30

One warm and sunny afternoon in July, ten clients gathered in anticipation at Victoria S.L., Las Chafiras for the second event of this type, the convoy. The vehicles arrived from Santa Cruz on two transporters, and one by one were driven into the showroom. This was an AMG convoy, so the vehicles were either AMG models, or they had been supplied with the optional AMG package. This pack includes front and back skirts with a black insert, side trims, sports steering, Agility Control, AMG six-spoke 18-inch alloy wheels, and larger perforated disc brakes with the Mercedes-Benz logo. Vehicles with V6 or V8 engines are equipped with dual exhaust pipes trimmed with chrome. Among the collection were a C 63, E 63, ML 63, SLK 55 and SL 63 (all AMG models) as well as an E 250 CDI, S 400 Hybrid, E250 CoupĂŠ, GL 320 CDI, GLK 350 and a C 220 Estate (all with the AMG package). The clients each chose which of these fabulous vehicles they would prefer to test drive, and eventually the convoy set off along the TF-1 motorway turning off towards Arona. This was no slow drive, the convoy was led by a staff member who set a fairly fast pace and the clients were expected to keep up, even on narrow, twisting mountain roads. This resembled a high class rally. There were several stops along the scenic

route to Vilaflor, at each one the clients played ‘musical cars’ and chose another one to put through its paces. By the first stop though, there were already one or two clients who didn’t want to be parted from the vehicles they had been driving! At the beautiful rural hotel in Vilaflor there was a refreshments stop, and then the journey resumed, after yet another change of car for the clients who were now becoming experienced test drivers. There were more stops on the way back, via Granadilla and San Miguel, and by the time they arrived back at Victoria S.L. most clients had driven all the vehicles that they wished try out. TJ and Terry of GT Motor in Las Chafiras declared the SL 63 their favourite, as did Miguel Ángel from San Miguel and Ana and Manuel Álvarez of Adeje, although their son Austin preferred the ML 63.

Ricardo from Los Gigantes preferred the ML 63 as did Alejandro Aguirre from El MĂŠdano, both stating that they liked the 4x4 aspect and that the vehicle was fast and felt safe. Rafael and Yolanda from Fontamira SL in Los Cristianos voted for the E series. They have a C series and said that this was better, safer and more comfortable. Overall though, by far the most popular vehicle and one which the driver did not part company with, was the white SLR AMG brought along by LĂśbnau who told us that he produces the best olive oil on the island. However, the most any of these clients could hope for was a ride as a passenger in this stunning vehicle.

South of the border... La Taquería The history of La Taquería Cantina Mexicana began in 1995. At that time there were very few restaurants of this type in the Canaries, and even fewer offering such typical Mexican dishes, made from products imported from Mexico. The inspiration for La Taquería Cantina Mexicana was the authentic Mexican cantinas. Their objective has always been that from the moment a client walks through the door of their restaurant, they enter a unique atmosphere, making dining – whether for lunch or an evening meal – an experience which goes much further than tasting the best Mexican food with an authentic Mexican flavour.

La Taquería Cantina Mexicana is a unique place where you can enjoy the food, the atmosphere, the décor, the music, live performances, and much more in the company of friends or family, turning the soirée into an unforgettable experience. La Taquería is much more than a place to go to for a snack or to dine, it is a meeting place where you can celebrate your finest occasions such as birthdays, company dinners, Christmas dinners, baptisms or communions. After dinner, the restaurant is transformed into a party atmosphere with live music which makes you want to stay longer and enjoy the fun over a Margarita or two.

restaurants At La Taquería Cantina Mexicana they are constantly revising everything which they offer to their clients. For example, they regularly update their menu with the intention of maintaining the curiosity of their clients and surprising them with new dishes. They always have a wide range of dishes on the menu, all of which combine in a balanced manner, top quality ingredients amongst which are a wide variety of products imported directly from Mexico. The basis of nearly all their dishes, and their star product, is La Tortilla de Trigo, (wheat pancakes) handmade fresh every day in their central kitchen. Emilio has a manufacturing side too, he makes and sells the tortillas wholesale, they are also made to a traditional Mexican recipe and the machinery is specially made in Mexico for professional manufacturing. A fundamental part of this restaurant is of course drinks, especially the Margaritas and beers. And because they love to enter into

the spirit of every important occasion, the restaurant is decorated for Christmas, St Valentine’s Day, Noche de San Juan and many more fiesta days. The special décor is always relevant to the specific day, without losing the authentic personality of La Taquería. Last but certainly not least, is the live music. They always include the latest in Mexican music in their extensive repertoire – in fact it is not unusual to see a real Mariachi band. When we visited La Taquería, we had a fabulous meal, starting with a jug of Margarita, which everyone seemed to have! We chose lemon, but the most popular is Strawberry, followed by Mango. Margaritas are made to order using fresh natural fruit. There is a large choice of dishes for vegetarians included in the tempting menu. Choose from a wide range of Totopos, Nachos, Quesadillas, Sincronizadas, Chimichangas, Flautas, Volcanes, Taquitos, Tacos, Burritos, Enchiladas, Fajitas, or even Chili con Carne, Pork Ribs, Buffalo Wings

and Stuffed Jalapenos. There are also fish, steak and chicken dishes, pizzas, and a range of fresh and crispy salads, plus some wonderful concoctions to fill tortillas with. There is also a special children’s menu which includes pizzas, chicken nuggets and a Mexican dish called Baby Taquería. With such a wonderful choice it is difficult to decide what to have, but Emilio is a great host and he is happy to explain the menu to first time visitors. They have a choice of five dishes to share. We had the Tex Mex dish which consisted of Flautas, Quesadillas, Taquitos, Chimichangas, Nachos and Burritos de Pollo. It was a great way to sample lots of dishes, and they were all delicious. There were four dips including the most delicious guacamole, probably the best you will find.

the magazine

The other dips were cheese, a slightly hot one, and a sweetish one. Sadly we had not left enough room for one of La Taquería’s delicious homemade desserts. Cielito Lindo is not only a popular Mexican song, but also a deep fried tortilla filled with apples, pears and raisins, served with ice cream. Another delightful dessert is a speciality of the house, Tarta Taquería, layered biscuits, cream and Baileys. The restaurant has a lovely intimate feel, and is nicely lit. So like Speedy González, get on down to the cantina for a perfect meal and a great party atmosphere afterwards. Find La Taquería on the main road in Guargacho. For reservations, call 922 731 313.

Alma

Pure dance, pure soul, pure magic For a night of intensity in passion and dance see Alma, the tenth show Carmen Mota and her son Joaquín Marcelo have brought to the Pirámide de Arona in South Tenerife. Unlike recent shows, Alma represents something of a return to more traditional dance roots for Mota. The first half of the show sees the excellent troupe perform a number of different routines, interpreting the fusion of Spanish dance with styles from other cultures, including tango and jazz. Capricho Español is emblematic of Mota’s theme of the fusion of the traditional

38

with modern movement and is set to music by Rimski-Kórsakov. Improv, choreography by young dancer Antonio Najarro, shows the group dynamic on stage beautifully. Bailando con Desconocidos bears the emotive touch of Joaquím Marcelo, with tango at is most seductive. Najorro also choreographs Jazzing, which combines a host of styles with brilliant use of castanets. The first part concludes with a stunning dance, by Marcelo, Aires, using the Jota dance from Aragón, with such energy and enthusiasm, bringing the audience to its feet in appreciation. The second half of Alma sees a traditional harbour setting with live music and song, using the pure Flamenco roots from Andalusia. Interaction between the singers and dancers is reflective of the place Spanish dance has in the country’s social history and traditions, but integrates dance traditions from other parts of the Latin world. If you plan one night out this year make it Alma. The show is on six nights a week (Mon/Wed, 7.30pm, Tue/Fri/Sat 9.30pm, Thur 10pm), there is a 30 per cent discount for residents and children under 12 free (and they supply great booster cushions for smaller patrons). When Nelson invaded Santa Cruz On July 25th Santa Cruz in Tenerife celebrated the anniversary of the defeat of British Admiral Horacio Nelson in a battle for control of the city in 1797. The popular event, with battle simulations taking place at strategic points throughout the city, sees volunteers dressed in the army uniforms of the day, lining up to re-enact the battles which saw Nelson’s only defeat in battle, not to mention the loss of his arm. This year the event was dedicated to all the boroughs of the island who came to the capital’s defence and helped local troops to an historic victory.

Around the world on a cruise ship by Gerald Ruben

We have stopped at Apia in Western Samoa, right in the centre of the South Pacific. We gave you some background information, and now it’s time to leave the ship and take a look. Don’t miss seeing the fish market and being amazed at the variety of fish on sale, and the flea market at the site of the old produce market. Sit down, look at the ocean views and have something to eat and drink. Two miles from the centre up on the Mulinu’u Peninsula are the royal burial grounds and both Parliament houses, old

and new. In the centre of the island is the house of Robert Louis Stevenson which is now a museum. Back in town is one of the most famous hotels in the South Pacific, Aggie Grey’s. The building used to be the British Club and is well worth a visit. Feasts play a big part in the lives of the natives and include roast suckling pig, chicken, crayfish, octopus, breadfruit, taro and vegetables. The local non alcoholic drink is known as kava, muddy looking stuff and mixed by the chief’s daughter, the other stuff is called Taupou. Drowsiness is the first effect produced and after a considerable intake, a state of euphoria is reached similar to

Since I was there I am sure that there a lot more eating places have opened. Do let me know. Activities: surfing, windsurfing, snorkelling and scuba diving, tennis and golf. Taxis are available but establish the fare as far as possible before getting in, there is an excellent bus service, but timetables may not be kept to, so make sure you can get back to your ship on time. Car Hire: you must get your licence endorsed by the Transport Control Board before vehicle hire (their office is opposite the flea market).

Just sintillating... Sintillate, the elite clubbing brand which set the world alight 11 years ago with their exclusive lifestyle parties all over the globe, have finally arrived here in Tenerife and with it their founder Gary Sewell. Sintillate was conceived by Gary Sewell and co founder Kevin O’Shea. The idea was to bring the worlds of showbiz, fashion and business together in a relaxed party environment, mixing different types of people and ages together. Sintillate was launched at K Bar in Chelsea in 1999 and was successful from the very start. They were the first to use a website as an interactive socialising network showing photos of people at their parties after the event and allowing people to post theirs (the prelude to Facebook!). The Times soon published a full page article about this exciting marketing concept giving even more stimulation and interest to their events. The idea then followed to take this party around the world to prestigious locations such as Marbella, Ibiza and Dubai with thousands of loyal followers travelling to weekend events. We wanted to know more about Gary Sewell, the 46

man behind Sintillate, so here we have an exclusive interview to find out more about the man who has the glamorous lifestyle that most of us can only dream of, who has many celebrity friends, spent Christmas in Sandy Lane, Barbados with Simon Cowell, Philip Green (the billionaire owner of the UK’s largest retail group Arcadia) the Sugarbabes and last year’s winner of the X Factor, Alexandra Burke. Gary was surprisingly a doctor, not the type of background one would expect for the founder of the most elite party

brand in the world. On leaving university he started work as a podiatrist (foot doctor) and practised in a London hospital with the health service for over two years. Becoming frustrated with the regimented way the health service worked, when an opportunity came along to change career he didn´t hesitate. After allowing a hairdresser friend for whom he had done some hair pictures in return for free hair cuts to enter some of the pictures in a hair modelling competition, he was noticed by the Elite modelling agency who offered him part time work. He was told by his health service boss that he had to make a choice, model or doctor but not both, so he dramatically changed his career to modelling, becoming the face of ‘94, swapping his doctor’s coat for a glamorous life travelling the world and working with all the top super models, such as Christy Turlington, Naomi Campbell, Kate Moss, Claudia Schiffer, Cindy Crawford to mention just a few. A career of 10 years followed, working in America, Paris, Milan and Sydney for Right: Gary on his last visit to Tenerife

designers Calvin Klein, Paul Smith, Versace and Dolce & Gabana, and even launching a modelling career for his ex- SAS Dad who after doing a photoshoot with Gary in Crete gained his own successful modelling career, one highlight of which was opening the Red or Dead fashion show. It was while in Sydney after 10 years of modelling that the idea of Sintillate was born. Kevin, his friend, a retired businessman, wanted a new challenge and Gary, ironically fed up with the travel, wanted to settle down in one place for a while. Sintillate was born, and quickly built up a loyal following and the successful formula was then taken around the world. Such celebrities as Beyonce, the Black Eyed Peas, Madonna, David Beckham, Justin Timberlake and even Liza Minelli were seduced by the Sintillate concept, celebrities and partygoers mixed and the success grew. So what is life like for Gary, how does he spend a typical week and what does he think of our beautiful island of Tenerife? He has a lifestyle that is the envy of many, travelling usually three weeks out of the month and splitting his time between Marbella, Ibiza, Dubai and now Tenerife, but enjoys his time at home in London with his best friend in life, his dog, Alfie, who at the moment is in a bit of trouble with the Royal Mail after trying to bite the postman’s bag. Gary has received a warning that if Alfie

tries this again the post won’t be delivered any more. So even with such a glamorous life Gary still has some of the more normal troubles of life…. also, ladies, you will like this news, he is single, one downside of his lifestyle is that it is very difficult to maintain a steady relationship, but as Gary says, he sees his future with a family of his own and is hoping to find “the right lady for him” sometime soon. Gary told us that he has a strong belief in Tenerife and its fantastic climate, but he believes it does have an image problem, it is raw, underdeveloped and badly promoted in the UK. No-one out there realises just how much Tenerife has to offer, fabulous hotels and restaurants, golf, windsurfing, surfing, and a host of amazing places to visit the whole year round. By bringing such a well known high class brand to Tenerife, Gary hopes to help change the way people think, let‘s hope so. On the face of it, Gary Sewell looks like one very lucky man, but as he says, everyone has luck and opportunities in life, some unfortunately don’t recognise them, some see them and are too frightened to act on them, and some see them and bravely reach out and snatch them. Gary is definitely one of the latter. Sintillate is now in south Tenerife every Thursday night, for more details go to www.sintillate.co.uk. august 2010

The IV Tenerife - La Gomera Circuit 2010 The third test in the circuit was celebrated at Golf del Sur on July 18th with a great level of participation. The 183 players once again took advantage of a marvellous day and showed their competitive spirit at this late stage of the circuit. Golf del Sur is the only golf course in Tenerife with three competition greens: Links, North and South where there is the added attraction and difficulty associated with the two lakes which affect holes 3, 4 and 5 of Links and the area

around hole 3 of North. Also, the proximity of the sea and the stunning barrancos around which the golf course has been created give the players even more enjoyment during their game. During this event, all the sponsors were thanked, especially Francachela Catering & Services, the sponsor of the day, who have suupported this circuit for the last three years.
