Tenerife Opera Festival Tenerife Auditorium, September 23 and 25
The result of an agreement between the Canarian government, the Tenerife Cabildo and the Asociación de Amigos de la Ópera, this year’s festival begins on September 23rd with the first opera: Falstaff by Giuseppe Verdi. In this Montecarlo opera production, the Orquesta Sinfónica de Tenerife will be conducted by Gianluca Martinenghi. Performances will be on September 23rd and 25th at 8.30pm in the Sala Sinfónica of the Auditorio de Tenerife. During October, on the 21st and 23rd, the festival will continue with Madame Butterfly. Tickets are now on sale, and can be ordered by phone on 902 317 327 (10am to 7pm, Monday to Saturday) and at the box office (between 10am and 3pm Monday to Friday and from 10am to 2pm Saturdays), at the
multiservice terminals at CajaCanarias or via internet from www.auditoriodetenerife. com. Alternatively, season tickets for the two operas can be acquired exclusively at the Auditorium box office.
Concert by Luis Morera Auditorio Municipal, El Sauzal, September 25
Leading member of La Palma group Taburiente, solo singer and artist Luis Morera will be presenting his latest solo album Me sigue cantando el alma in a concert at El Sauzal’s Municipal Auditorium on September 25. Containing 14 tracks, this album combines songs from his childhood with more recent themes, as well as some which he has produced himself. It is the first solo album which Morera has released in six years and contains his own compositions which have a particular reference to the island, such
as Ravelo, Bajo tu cielo, Malagueña and Balada para Julia (his daughter’s name). Luis Morera also interprets some alltime Latin American songs such as La Golondrina, by Narciso Serradell; the bolero by Armando Manzanero, Contigo aprendí; and Gardel’s tango, Volver, as well as the Fito Páez song Yo vengo a ofrecer mi corazón and the expressive Cuando llueve llora el sol by Venezuelan Alí Primera. Fiestas del Cristo and the Festival del Drago Icod de los Vinos, last two weeks in September
Icod de los Vinos means Icod of the wines in English, and wine does indeed play an important part in many of this town’s fiestas. The statue of El Santisimo Cristo del Calvario is a highly revered image, and provokes celebrations in the last week of the month, hence the two fiestas run alongside each other bringing literature and art together. In this cultural festival, as with many others, it is habitual to try the local wines while the statue is taken around the town in processions. The Drago Milenario is an enormous example of a much visited tree, supposedly a thousand of years old with a legend attached to it, and which was declared a
national monument in the year 1917. It is situated in the Parque del Drago, open every day from 9.30am to 6.30pm, which houses many other endemic plant species.
XXV Pinolere Craft Fair 2010 September 3, 4 and 5
In this, the 25th edition of one of the biggest craft fairs in the Canaries, the emphasis is on working with wood.
You can also see all types of traditional crafts being made including typical Canarian instruments, pottery, ceramics, jewellery, textiles, cigars, traditional costumes, paintings, tools, foodstuffs and more. You could even purchase something special and try some traditional Canarian food and wine. There will also be workshops aimed at both adults and children where the public are invited to participate and to learn techniques. This fair, which makes a really enjoyable cultural day out, is open from 10am to 9pm on each of the three days, and there are usually buses running from La Orotava.

Acupuncture
Pins and needles Despite initial scepticism on the part of scientists, a gathering body of evidence points to the efficacy of acupuncture for a number of conditions. A report published by the National Institutes of Health confirmed that, “promising results have emerged” and considered that, “further research is likely to uncover additional areas where
acupuncture interventions will be useful”. Francisco Carrasco Herrera is the Vice President of the Tenerife Acupuncture Association, the only association in the Canaries, and one of the less than 20 in all of Europe, that is recognised by the World Federation of AcupunctureMoxibustion Societies, which in its turn is recognised by the World Health Organisation. Francisco studied nursing and worked in that capacity for almost 40 years but he found that he wanted, “to look for something better than conventional medicine. Too many people have conditions that have no solution and that cannot be.” He believes that everything has a solution and it is only our, “great ignorance” that stops us finding it. He and his wife Olivia qualified together in 1987.

Over the last few years working as a nurse, he began to combine his conventional treatments with acupuncture, using needles to treat, for example, people with chronic pain caused by kidney stones. They started seeing patients in a small way from their home and by the end of the first two years there were queues outside the door of people waiting for treatment until three o’clock in the morning.
Through family connections he met and was accepted as a pupil of a Master of Korean Acupuncture, Shim Ra HyunSeung. It meant five years more study and practice, but Francisco finds that he prefers to use the Korean methods as they give him better results. Fourteen years ago they opened their present clinic in Puerto de la Cruz next to the social security offices and found the pressure of work was soon so high

that they had to restrict the number of days they attended to patients. Some clients attend for depression, problems with losing weight or addiction, but the majority of their clients these days come to them with serious illnesses, tumours or diseases for which conventional medicine doesn’t have a good prognosis such as Parkinson’s or multiple sclerosis. Francisco told us that in most cases they can reduce the amount of medication the patient has to take and the severity of the symptoms and in some cases they have affected cures. Acupuncture has become a way of life for the whole family. Their clinic and home is even decorated with Oriental sculpture, ornaments and furniture which Olivia tracks down, mainly with the help of clients who act as spotters. They are investigators as well as therapists and have several published books including a breakthrough work on acupuncture on the feet [Podopuntura (Nuevo Descubrimiento de La Acupuntura de Los Pies) ISBN: 8495052-36-9] and are currently working on a project for self-help pain control using the point of a pencil or pen. 12
They favour the shorter and finer needles and also offer non-invasive treatment with seeds for children or those with needle phobias. Clients receiving regular treatment have their own set of needles which are sterilised after each use and stored for next time in special tubes with their name and reference number. For those needing a short series of treatment, single use needles are used. All four of their children are also fully trained acupuncturists and two have their own clinics, one in Icod combining her studies as a psychiatric pedagogic specialist with acupuncture in the treatment of Autistic children and the other in Madrid has a practice specialising in animals particularly dogs and she hopes to specialise later in horses. Francisco and Olivia see patients on Monday, Wednesday and Friday between 9.30am and 2pm and 4.30pm and 8pm at their clinic in the Edificio Boca Tauce, Bajo 1 & 2, Puerto de la Cruz (near the tax office). An appointment is advisable to avoid disappointment, call 922 372 412.

Bra size guide You are recommended to check your size once a year, as this can alter with weight fluctuations, hormone changes, etc. You need to take two measurements, one under the bust and one at the fullest point. If you are a large lady, it is advisable to put on a thin, lightweight bra for this purpose, otherwise a bra-less measurement will be fine. Keep the tape level around your body for both measurements.

Southern sands Although locals seem to prefer the fine black volcanic sand claiming it’s easier to dust off, foreign tourists still flock to the lighter coloured, and normally imported, fossil sand beaches or dunes. The south of Tenerife has its fair share of both.
Poris de Abona has one of the quieter beaches on the south east coast
22
Playa de Poris has unusual natural off white sand, the beaches of El MĂŠdano are fed from offshore with fine dune sand and many of the largest beaches in the main tourist areas have imported sand. There is also a spectacular white sand beach bordering the largest artificial wave pool in Europe in Siam Park where the sand was imported especially from Portugal.

Playa de la Arena is a blue flag beach with stunning views to La Gomera

This coastline is protected from the Atlantic swell by the island and most beaches are good for children, however if you want to be on the safe side, Playa la Nea, Radazul, Playa Leocadio Machado, El Médano, Playa las Tejitas, El Médano, Playa de las Vistas, Los Cristianos, Playa Troya, Las Américas, Playa del Duque, Adeje and Playa de la Arena, Puerto de Santiago all offer lifeguard facilities. The larger beaches also have sunbed and beach umbrella hire and most
have showers and toilet facilities. If you are looking for quieter beaches, the south east coast is the best bet. Playa Leocadio Machado, Playa las Vistas, Playa Troya and Playa de la Arena all have blue flag status, but smaller beaches are often controlled for quality and safety by individual councils, such as those in Adeje. Nudism is allowed in Playa de Poris, off the main beach to the left in Playa las Tejitas, El Médano and on the rocks to the left of

Playa de la Caleta, Adeje. Playa las Tejitas is also excellent for walkers although the view may not always be desirable. Playa las Vistas is the best area for surfing, but the beaches par excellence for windsurfing and kitesurfing in the whole of Tenerife are to be found in El Médano. Equipment hire and schooling is readily available. If you enjoy diving, there are schools and facilities along most of the coast and Playa las Eras in Fasnia is of particular interest. If you are looking for something different, the beaches in Arico, Tajao and Las Sardinas both offer striking formations of sandstone which create a dreamlike atmosphere. Sadly, the excellent Playa Los Guios in Los Gigantes, which offered wonderful opportunities to swim under the awesome, massive, ancient cliffs is still not open at the moment due to a rock fall, but the picturesque harbour with its many bars and restaurants is still very much worth a visit. Along with Puerto Colón it is one of the main departure points for the whale and dolphin visits, including in kayaks where you can really get close to these wonderful marine animals. Finally a lot of work has been done in the last few years to improve access for the disabled, especially on the larger of the tourist beaches. On the Sinpromi website, the island association for the disabled, www. portalturismoaccesible.org <http://www.portalturismoaccesible.org/>, the following beaches are recommended as fully adapted for disabled needs: Playa de Troya, Playa Torviscas and Playa Fañabé and Playa del Duque, Adeje and Playa de las Vistas, Arona.

Mogu Lounge Situated in the centre of the chic Plaza del Duque shopping centre in Costa Adeje, the Mogu Lounge is the place to relax and enjoy a glass of quality wine, choose a refreshing beer, and nibble on tapas which have been designed to complement all the drinks offered which also include the best coffees and truly amazing cocktails. Mogu only opened in March 2010 and has already built itself a fine reputation.
Enjoy all this in a relaxed atmosphere with a highly professional service and attention to detail which you will notice on your very first visit. Luca Avanzati and Ricardo Sfragaro are two Italians who, despite their youth, have a remarkable amount of academic qualifications and professional experience in cafés and cocktail bars. Both treat their profession as an art, and their friendly attitude makes it very clear that as well as selling the best products and offering an excellent service, Mogu Lounge is distinguished by its magnificent team. “I think up a new cocktail, and the next day I can make it”, says Luca who, like Ricardo, is very happy to work in Mogu Lounge where everyone works with an authentic passion. “When I see a customer eating or drinking something, enjoying it and looking happy, that is the best possible satisfaction that I could have”, comments Ricardo. Creativity and fantasy are also welcome here. Try an Avanzati cocktail or a Sfragaro coffee, created by these two Italians - they are the best on the menu!

Rock Story, the latest presentation by Viana Shows at Exit Palace in San Eugenio is an impressive musical stage production. The cast of 16 international musicians, singers and dancers interpret three shows to perfection: The Dream Musical of Abba, The Pulse concert of Pink Floyd and the We Will Rock You concert of Queen, all supported by sophisticated laser lighting, thought provoking videos, magnificent stage sets and an extremely talented dance troupe. A string of Abba hits are guaranteed to have you singing along. Excellent musicians, fabulous costumes and choreography mix wonderfully to take you back in time. When the mood changes to Pink Floyd, you are treated to fascinating lighting effects, music par excellence, videos and some amusing touches which combine to create a fascinating performance. complemented by a highly skilled trapeze dancer who cavorts gracefully on sheets and ropes. Finally the sounds of Queen rock the audience with lots of familiar hits, a wonderful piano performance by the female keyboard player and four male dancers who perform cartwheels and somersaults. Only first class musicians and singers can tackle songs such as Bohemian Rhapsody and Barcelona, and they do so faultlessly. Rock Story is a magnificent and breathtaking show during which the unexpected provokes gasps of delight. The usual standing ovation at the end is well deserved. You can see Rock Story on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays and tickets are available from hotel receptions, agencies, or on the door. Exit Palace is located at Exit 29 from the TF1 motorway, near Siam Park.

LuxurytheinCountryside Have you ever dreamed of living in the countryside but didn´t want the long tiring drive home after work or doing the shopping? Well, here could be your solution. Finca Santana is a beautiful country residence that is set in large very private grounds on the hillside just above Los Menores, which is only 10 minutes drive from the centre of Playa de las AmÊricas, so close to the hectic resort but a whole world away. 42
This stunning villa is set in its own grounds of 14,000 square metres with the most amazing views to the south. The land is in the centre of two barrancos (ravines) which offer total security to the villa. The gardens have all been beautifully landscaped with a full watering system and the kind of plants and bushes that are very low maintenance. So you can enjoy the beauty without a lot of hard work, just go and pick the lemons for your favourite sundowner. In addition to the terraced gardens there is a large greenhouse at the back of the villa where you can grow september 2010

The John Lowe Charity Golf Classic
Charity Bullseye Grab your clubs and hurry down to Amarilla Golf for the best organised charity golf match of the year on September 18. Legends of Darts, John Lowe and Eric Bristow are repeating their successful fundraising visit of last year, this time accompanied by Bob Anderson. All the cash raised will go to Amate, the Tenerife based breast cancer charity. Many sponsors and golfers are repeating after last year’s triumphant event as the excellent organisation and conditions of the course have made it a must-attend day. Three times world champion John, the inspiration for the event, has been running an annual charity golf tournament here in Tenerife since 2005. If you want to take part call the club at 922 730 319, fax 922 785 557 or email info@amarillagolf. es to book. The rate is just €50 per person and includes entry fees to the competition, the round of golf, a buggy and a barbecue afterwards. If you want to go along and watch and join us at the barbecue (for just €10) or bid for the pleasure of playing alongside John, Eric or Bob, please call David or Jean Hill on 922 737 288. There will be entertainment, a raffle and an auction so the barbecue will help make it a fun day for non golfers as well as the golfers. Amarilla Golf have once again made a superb effort in containing prices for this very worthy cause and grateful thanks are due to them and their wonderful staff.

Around the world on a cruise ship by Gerald Ruben
We hope everyone had a terrific time in Apia and that no-one was left ashore. What happens next is taken from the ship’s log and will be repeated nearly every time the ship leaves her berth: 1. All tours returned and security checks complete 2. Hands to forward and aft mooring stations 3. Local pilot on board 4. Engines and thrusters on bridge control

5. All persons on board, striking gangway 6. All pre-departure checks complete, ship ready to sail 7. Let go all lines forward and aft 8. All lines gone fore and aft (indicating TRUE departure 9. Vessel thrusting off the berth 10. Ship starts to move ahead 11. Commence manoeuvre to leave port 12. Local pilot disembarked 13. Master rings off the engines as ship is full away on passage towards Christmas Island. We now have two days at sea before we arrive at our next destination, so here are a few facts and figures. These interesting snippits of information are from the Artemis Grand Voyage, during this cruise we travelled 37,269 nautical miles or 42,859 land miles (one nautical mile is 1.15 land miles, the fuel economy was 48.9 gallons per mile. 52.5 gallons of fresh water are used by each person per day, however this includes

water used in the galleys for food preparation. There was a total crew of 575 persons. Now this is the interesting part, 29,964 bottles of wine were drunk, “we did our best”, but look at the food consumption! 18 tonnes of beef, 9.7 tonnes of lamb, 7,717 chickens and 871 ducks, 250,000 eggs, 25.7 tonnes of melon 4393 bottles of spirits and 54,192 cans and bottles of beer. Now it’s time to turn our attention to our next destination, the Island of Kiritimati, also known as Christmas Island (but not to be confused with Christmas Island in the Indian Ocean),
the magazine
situated in the Line Islands group of the republic of Kirabati in the Central Pacific Ocean. It’s not that well known as in 2003 the population was only 100,000. There was no television station and almost half of the country consists of a large lagoon and more than 100 lakes. It’s a big atoll and probably the oldest atoll in the world, rising sea levels could have a disastrous effect on Christmas Island with severe droughts still a problem today. More about Christmas Island in our next issue.
