New Glasgow connection announced Jet2.com has just announced the opening of a new base at Glasgow Airport. According to the company the move creates up to 150 new jobs and sees the introduction of nine low fare destinations from the Scottish hub, including Tenerife. Hit me with your tickle stick! Ken Dodd, among the UK’s most loved funny men, is a regular visitor to Tenerife and lists the place amongst one of his top get-away destinations. During his most recent trip he was looking for somewhere special to dine, and on the advice and in the company of his good friends Barbara Law and George Reed, sampled the delights of El Molino Blanco, and was very impressed indeed. Beeb in Guía Four BBC productions will be the focus of one of the key workshops in the MiradasDoc, the fifth Guia de Isora international festival of documentary film. ‘The documentary in television’ has been a regular feature of the festival, though previously has focused on Spanish productions. This year though British directors and programmes feature, including nature documentaries such as David Attenborough’s Planet Earth: From Pole to Pole, which took four years to film, Gareth Edward’s End Day, which uses science fiction to predict four possible routes towards global destruction, Fight for Life, a series looking at different patients struggling to survive, and a documentary produced by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, Rolling Stones, Exile on Main Street. MiradasDoc takes place in Guía de Isora from October 29th to November 6th.

Turismo de Tenerife has come up with an excellent and direct way of letting you know what’s going on. 30 large display panels have been installed on the main streets and avenues of Tenerife’s busy tourist zones, in Puerto de la Cruz. Santiago del Teide, Adeje and Arona, promoting events that are happening around the island. According to the island’s tourism councillor José Manuel Bermúdez, the campaign is aimed at “offering our visitors all the information they need to enjoy their stay on Tenerife”. The panels will be updated on a monthly basis, and will also carry information about the nearest tourist info point and how to get there, as well as other information sources for tourists. There are also new information units at both of the island’s airports and at major hotels, to ensure, says Bermúdez, that tourists get the very most out of their stay here.

The European Beach Volley Challenge October 8th, 9th and 10th

The Tenerife Champions Cup 2010 returns to Siam Park, Costa Adeje on October 8th, 9th and 10th. This will be the fourth edition of a competition which is considered a top event in the world’s beach volley calendar and will feature international teams who are sure to delight the audience with their sheer energy. There will be four teams, including the Spanish pair Liliana Steiner and Elsa Baquerizo. There will be nine matches daily, and for the first time the challenge will include women. The Tenerife Champions Cup was one of the four finalists for the

award Major Event of the Year in Spain and Portugal in the Grand Gala Premios Eventoplus. This year’s event takes place over a festival weekend, El Puente del Pilar, so it is sure to be well attended. TheTenerife Champions Cup is supported by the Tenerife Cabildo, Turismo de Tenerife, the Ayuntamiento de Adeje and the Real Federación Española de Voleibol, as well as numerous prestigious sponsors.

The Fiestas de Nuestra Señora de la Encarnación and Santa Úrsula are very important for the borough of Adeje, and virtually take over from the Fiestas Lustrales which have occupied most

of September. These fiestas include religious, cultural, sporting and festive events as well as a traditional Romería (October 10th) in which people from all the surrounding villages take

part. Local people wearing traditional Canarian costumes on board gypsy wagons will encourage you to try various culinary delights and drinks as they make their merry way up the Calle Grande accompanied by singers and musicians. A fun event for all the family and a wonderful opportunity to see how the people of the island, both young and old, care for their culture and keep their traditions alive. The day’s finale is the Baile de Magos that night, for which you must wear traditional costume if you want to attend.

Jane Monheit is a jazz and adult contemporary vocalist and has sung with some of the world’s leading jazz singers such as Michael Bublé, Ivan Lins, Terence Blanchard and Tom Harrell. She has also received Grammy nominations for two of her recordings. Aromatherapy is a word which conjures up thoughts of deliciously perfumed massages, infusions and inhalations. It is the practice of using plant oils, including essential oils (the pure essence of a plant), for psychological and physical well being.

Although the term aromatherapy was not used until the 20th century, it has actually been used for thousands of years to create harmony and balance, fight disease and in some cases even to embalm the dead. It is also used as an antiseptic, antispasmodic, decongestant, diuretic and stimulant. Jasmine is also good for respiratory problems, addictions and generally calming tension and stress.

Visitors to the beach at El Médano in early August had no idea they were in for a weekend of fashion, fun and fiesta until the music started pumping out and the beautiful Patricia Yurena (Miss Spain 2008) was escorted onto the catwalk by ten striking male models. North Tenerife While the south enjoys mainly dry, warm and sunny weather giving its characteristic arid countryside, by contrast the north is verdant and green. The prevailing north easterly winds known as Los Alisios, bring cooler air across the sea which, when it reaches the warmer land mass of the island, condenses and forms clouds. Low cloud is common in some areas, and there is more rainfall, hence the lush countryside. When this cooler air reaches the peak of Mount Teide, it meets the warmer and dryer air of the south, and so the cloud heading southwards usually evaporates. Mount Teide acts as a weather barrier between the two areas. The north is typically a few degrees cooler than the south, especially in the winter, so when visiting don’t forget to take a jacket or cardigan. Apart from this difference in climate, 22

while the south has a more modern infrastructure and plenty of leisure activities to offer, the north has a more traditional architecture and rural, laid back lifestyle. The attractive Canarian balconies are in abundance, and there are some magnificent architectural examples to be visited as well as some country manors. The historic centres of the north which are worthy of a visit are the former capital La Laguna (where guided tours are available), La Orotava, Garachico, Puerto de la Cruz and Icod de los Vinos, while the most interesting villages and hamlets are situated within the areas of Anaga and Teno which are also a walker’s paradise. In all these towns and villages, you will find plenty of opportunities to sample the local cuisine.

La Laguna The historic town of San Cristobal de La Laguna, now home of the university, was

declared a Cultural Heritage of Humanity by Unesco in 1999 and contains around 400 buildings which benefit from some level of monumental or environmental protection. To help you to see as much as possible, walking routes have been designed for independent visitors or alternatively you can take advantage of the guided tours which leave regularly from the tourism office. Groups can reserve their own tours on weekdays. There are also guided and self-guided tours of the interior of La Laguna’s churches and temples. La Laguna has too many historical buildings to mention, but some of those most worthy of a visit are: Iglesia de la Concepción, Casa de Alvarado Bracamonte y de los Capitanes Generales (housing the municipal tourism office and the international centre for the conservation of heritage), Santa Iglesia Cathedral, Casa del Corregidor, Convento de Santa Catalina de Siena, october 2010

La Orotava The town of La Orotava conserves its historical centre which remains perfectly separated from modern constructions. It has been declared a precinct of historical and artistic interest and is also listed as a monumental precinct. Balconies and typical Canarian courtyards and patios prevail in the old quarter with cobbled streets, many of which have been pedestrianised. The town has much

history to reveal, not least of which is the origin of the tradition of creating a giant sand carpet in the Plaza del Ayuntamiento and carpeting the streets with flowers at Corpus Christi. Discover all of this and more by taking a leisurely walk through this relatively small area. Begin at Ermita del Calvario (near the bus station) and work your way uphill along the cobbled streets. Eventually you will reach the Ayuntamiento with its big plaza, continue to Hijuela de Botánico, Casa de Los Balcones and the Casa del Turista (where you can stop to buy souvenirs and gifts) in Calle San Francisco. Further on are the Hospital de la Santísima Trinidad, then downhill to the Casa de Lercaro in Calle Colegio, Casa Monteverde and the beautiful Iglesia Matriz de la Concepción. On the corner of Calles Inocencio García and Tomás Zerolo is the monument to the carpet makers, and other locations to visit are the Casa Torrehermosa for crafts,

the Iglesia de Santo Domingo and finally the Ex-Convento de San Benito Abad which houses the Museo de Artesanía Iberoamericana.

Garachico Garachico was the main trading port of Tenerife until the volcanic eruption of 1706 destroyed the port and much of the town. Founded by Cristóbal de Ponte in 1496, the town still guards architectural evidence of its past in the form of the mansions, convents and churches which escaped the effects of the eruption. In 1980, King Juan Carlos awarded the municipality the fine arts gold medal for having dedicated so much attention to its artistic and historic heritage and for the care given to its streets, plazas and gardens. The town has also received many other national distinctions and awards. A walk through the town is highly recommended, and don’t miss the Parque 23

de la antigua Puerta de Tierra (where there is a large wine press), Castillo de San Miguel, Monumento al Emigrante Canario (from where there is a wonderful view of the town and port, as well as the flow taken by the lava during the eruption of 1706). Also, it is worth wandering through stone paths which wind their way around the beautiful natural rock pools which are very popular for bathing.

Puerto de la Cruz Puerto de la Cruz is where tourism began in Tenerife, in the 19th century. Even then, many Britons visited the town and this influence is clearly visible. The origin of this can be seen from the Plaza Viera y Clavijo where the old Hotel Martiánez began touristic activity in 1866. Taking a walk through the Paseo Aguilar y Quesada, popularly known as the palm tree walk, you can see the cliffs of Martiánez where significant archaeological evidence of Guanche activity has been found in caves. Arriving at the coast you can see the 24

black volcanic sand beach of the same name, Playa de Martiánez, and the Lago Martiánez, a magnificent leisure area designed by the Lanzarote artist César Manrique. Heading up into the town, walk through Calle Iriarte, and head for Plaza de Charco and Plaza de Europa. This is the old town where you will find many buildings (including top restaurants) which have magnificent courtyards, interior patios and galleries, and of course typical Canarian balconies abound. Don’t miss buildings like the Casa de Miranda, the old Customs House, the archaeological museum, Iglesia de San Francisco and of course the fishing port. Playa Jardín is a wonderful location for sun worshipping, and two attractions which should not be missed are the Botanical Gardens and Loro Parque.

Icod de los Vinos The historic town of Icod de los Vinos also belongs to the categories of heritage of cultural interest and historical precinct. The town’s construction began

in the 15th century, and it has been added to and adapted according to private and social needs over the years. Nowadays, Icod has a vibrant and popular shopping centre within the old town where there many buildings and plazas worthy of a visit, including La Iglesia Matriz de San Marcos, situated within La Plaza Andrés de Lorenzo Cáceres which has pretty and well kept gardens. From here there is a good overhead view of the famous Drago tree. The church houses many works of art and also acts as a museum. The Iglesia de San Agustín looks over the Plaza de Leon Huerta and was constructed in the mid-16th century. The church houses various tablas and sculptures and has preserved its original arches. Climbing the main steps in the Plaza de Los Cáceres, you arrive in the Plaza de la Pila or Constitución which is surrounded by marvellous examples of Canarian architecture dating back to the 17th and 19th centuries.

Its top speed is electronically limited to 155mph. The XFR grips the road, no matter what you put it through, with the new electronically controlled suspension system keeping the body taut and flat even when you’re tearing around undulating and winding roads. This car also contains the biggest ventilated disc brakes and includes a faster steering ratio. The Jaguar XFR is the British company’s (supposed) rival of the BMW M5 and the Mercedes E63 AMG. Juan Ayza Albiol (Benicarló 1968) studied cooking in the Castillón hotel school. He finished his training in a number of different restaurants and hotels in Spain and the Americas, including the Gran Casino de Cataluña and the Hotel Tres Reyes in Pamplona. Later on, he joined the Meliá hotel chain in the Caribbean, opening Spanish restaurants in the Meliá Puerto Vallarta and Meliá Cancún. He was also involved in a Spanish gastronomy fortnight in Mexico with a number of other top

chefs. He left Mexico, a country he loves and which has influenced his cooking to a great extent, for Puerto Rico where he worked in Ramiro’s de San Juan. When his Caribbean adventures ended, he returned to Spain and was appointed head chef in the Hotel Bahía del Duque in Costa Adeje, Tenerife, where he remained for three years until 1996 when he opened his own restaurant, El Rincón del Arroz in Los Cristianos. In 2006, he was awarded the regional cuisine prize by Tenerife daily, Diario de Avisos and every year since 2000 his restaurant has been recommended by the Michelin Guide. Juan focuses on Mediterranean cuisine, especially rice. His wife Manuela says, “so many tourists leave Spain with the wrong idea about paella”. El Rincón del Arroz has 20 different paellas on the menu, made not only with fish and seafood, but with meat or vegetables, or a mixture of the two as well. As Juan studied in Castillón, the home of paella, he prepares the most authentic versions which include vegetables and duck, lobster, chicken and rabbit, or vermicelli paella amongst others. You can even order his paellas to take away, they are extremely popular and make an alternative fast food. Apart from paellas, El Rincón del Arroz offers the finest food in the Sea and Land section of the menu. Cruising tourism began in Tenerife in the 18th century, when the first English visitors arrived on the island by sea, some of them to pass a few months in Tenerife and then sail onwards to the British colonies. Among these colonials who used the port to take on provisions, were also the first tourists to visit the island, and they were very different from those who visit us nowadays. Since those early times, and especially in the last decade, cruising as a form of tourism has evolved incessantly. Cruising is now is one of the main activities in the tourism sector and its growth has been constant. Only five years ago, 38,000 Spanish citizens chose cruising for their holidays, but nowadays that figure has grown to more than 600,000. Despite the fact that cruising is traditionally a winter option, the Ports of Tenerife receive cruise liners practically all year round. Their location in the Atlantic and their configuration as a destination consisting of several islands not separated by a great distance, each with its own characteristics, was one of the main reasons for the launch of the brand, Cruises in the Atlantic Islands, which was officially presented in 1996, and designed to promote the ports of the Canaries and Madeira at the main tourism trade fairs. The decision made by the main English tour operators to choose the Port of Santa Cruz de Tenerife as the base for their cruises of the Atlantic and the African coast laid a milestone for the islands

The security which surrounds the port installations has been the cornerstone and the reason why the main international shipping lines continue to use our port as an independent base par excellence in the Atlantic. Of the 582,835 visitors who passed through the ports in the province of Tenerife last year, 121,524 – some 20 per cent – arrived at Santa Cruz de Tenerife. This type of traffic gives a significant boost for the island’s economy, providing an average of between 28,000 and 30,000 associated overnight stays per season as well as 192 flights – 80 for German tourists and 112 for English. The significant role played by the Canaries in the European cruising trade was revealed in the latest study published by the European Cruising Council, where the Islands are mentioned as one of the preferred destinations in the Continent, and where their role in boosting the number of cruising tourists registered 48

annually in Spain was emphasised. As well as the increase in the number of port of call stop-offs by cruisers, cruising tourism is a significant supplier of resources for the province’s economy. One aspect which the Ports Authority of Santa Cruz de Tenerife believe in, and which they continue to strengthen, amongst other things, is ecological tourism. The cruise liner only occupies space for a matter of hours, and the tourists who disembark spend more money than conventional holidaymakers. Cruising is characterised by its dynamism, with modern day offers which are not only innovative but competitive as well. This sector is in expansion, with a growth predicted in Europe of between 5.5 and 8.5 per cent up to 2011.

The near future The Ports Authority of Santa Cruz de Tenerife expects to close 2010 with a total of 377 cruise liner visits, which is an increase of two per cent, with possibly

more than 600,000 visitors on board – which would be an increase of five per cent on 2009 when we received 580,605 cruising tourists. During the next few months we are expecting the first stop-off, on Christmas Eve, by the new Disney ship, Disney Dream, at Santa Cruz de Tenerife. Previous to that, in October, we will be receiving the Queen Elizabeth II during her inaugural voyage. Once again the port will be used as a base by ships belonging to AidaCruises and Thomson, Costa Concordia and MSC Fantasia during their voyages. Finally, during November, when the work of prolonging the pier at the port of San Sebastián de La Gomera will be complete, the German ship Mein Schiff will have the honour of inaugurating the new infrastructure destined for cruise liners. For the first time, a cruiser of more than 200 metres in length which can carry 1,800 passengers will be able to dock in La Gomera. october 2010
