If someone is asking about coming to live in the Canary Islands it’s hard to know what to advise – if you live here and made the move you often know instinctively who is going to make it and who won’t. But those who are almost guaranteed to get the most out of their time here are those who see the full picture and are willing to take the plunge and find out what the real Canaries, beyond the sea and sun, are all about.

Doing business with Africa For the first time a major international business conference focusing on developing commercial links between the USA, Europe, Asia and Africa will take place outside Washington, here in Tenerife.

The three day conference will be held in the Bahía del Duque from March 30th to April 1st and brings together senior North American, European, Asian and African private sector and government officials with a vested interest in investment and growth on the African continent, including Mohammed Ibn Chambas, secretary general of ACP (Africa, Caribbean and the Pacific) and Lorraine Hariton, from the US State Department. ‘International Partnerships Conference: Doing Business with Africa’ will also be used to strengthen the Canary Islands’ prime position as a logistical centre for negotiations and connections with the neighbouring continent. Local organisation is in the hands of the chamber of commerce, the Tenerife Cabildo and the regional government. For Canarian companies wishing to participate, more information and registration forms are available via www. camaratenerife.com and www.africacncl. org. Abama gallery

Alejandro Tosco Tenerife artist Alejandro Tosco has an exhibition running in the Abama Golf & Spa Resort gallery until February 13th, and it’s well worth a visit. Tosco is considered one of the island’s leading fine artists. Born in Tenerife in

1975 he was, from infancy, surrounded by a family who were well versed in the arts, and is related to Álvaro Fariña and Óscar Domínguez, the latter rightly considered one of the founders of the world-wide surrealist movement. Tosco didn’t hold his first individual show until 2003 but has quickly achieved a national and international acclaim, and has displayed works in New York, Tokyo, Cuba and Paris as well as extensively in Spain. And what is obvious to many is that his Canarian roots are evident in many of his paintings, the colours and textures reflecting his island of birth. You can see his exhibition at the Abama Golf & Spa Resort daily from 8am to 11pm.

New craft market The new Artesan Market opens on February 1st in Torviscas, and will be open daily from 4pm to 10pm. This will be a covered market, providing protection from both the sun and rain, with over 60 stalls which will be selling different items, the ideal place to find something unique and special, either for yourself or as a gift or souvenir. You can find the market in the spacious covered area beside the Torviscas beachfront walkway.

Operación Triunfo Tenerife’s Charlie Karlsen has entered the Operación Triunfo contest, which is similar to the UK’s Pop Idol. 7,000 hopefuls auditioned for this opportunity, and that number was whittled down to 16, so this was an outstanding achievement in itself. A former Wingate pupil, Adeje resident Charlie, 17 years old, has British parents. His wins so far include Tenerife’s Got Talent in 2008, the Granadilla young talent contest in El Médano and the Arona young talent contest held at the Los Cristianos Cultural Centre, both in 2009, as well as the Voz del Atlántico prize at last year’s Universong-Festival internacional de la canción de las Islas Canarias, and the first prize in the international Festival Berliner Perle 2010. Good luck Charlie!

CineEsCena La Laguna is to host the first gastronomic cinema festival in the Canaries, aptly named CineEsCena. This cultural event is planned for March 14 to 19 and the main venue will be the Teatro Leal. The idea is that each year, movie, TV and publicity professionals as well as documentalists

what‘s new will have the opportunity to show their best productions and where gastronomy will be a characteristic element. CineEsCena was successfully presented in the II Encuentro Profesional Innovación en el Sector Turístico and at the MiradasDoc festival in Guía de Isora. One of its main objectives is to discover the gastronomic memories of various locations, and bring the reality and culture of these places to the public via documentaries or the knowledge of well known personalities in the world of quality cuisine.

has now come to an end in the capital and during the three days it took to dismantle the rink while sad faces looked on, the owners have been negotiating with the Arona council to install it in Los Cristianos, a resort which could well be offering sun, sea and ice as well. In Santa Cruz, delegate councillor for the development society, Ángel Isidro Guimerá expressed his profound satisfaction with the project. He confirmed that its objectives had been completed – to offer a different type of leisure activity to the residents of the city, and to give a fillip to commercial activity in the area. While awaiting data regarding the actual economical impact of the project, he admitted that around 1,000 persons per day visiting the rink could only be described as a success. He said he was proud to have fronted this initiative and that working all year to have the rink installed was worth the effort. He added, “it was a very interesting experience, and one which we hope to repeat in the future”.

Sol Meliá, the leading hotel chain in innovation and the use of new technology in Spain, has presented its latest internet project at the international tourism fair Fitur, in response to the new habits adopted by clients who use the social networks. A year after launching the first reservations system exclusively for mobile phone use, which has already exceeded a million visits, the company is continuing to adapt itself to this high tech, virtual environment in which the profile of the traveller has changed radically. A new management strategy which includes joining social networks has been developed. For example, the Facebook page for Sol Meliá’s various brands already has 40,000 fans. Sol Meliá has been monitoring its online reputation for

the last year and improving its response to opinions posted. The design of the company’s online reservations system has also been improved, and by the end of last year the reservations system for the three most popular smartphones, iPhone, Blackberry and Android had already registered 100,000 downloads.

My perfect wedding Marriages they say are made in heaven, but for the wedding of your dreams you only need to travel to Tenerife. Blessed with year-round sunshine, the pretty island is an excellent place to let your special day be a truly unforgettable experience.

Picture the scene; white flowing dresses at golden sand beaches, tropical flora and palm trees in the background, a big blue Canarian sky overhead, an amazing view of the fantastic Atlantic. Could there be any better way to celebrate your big day? Your Wedding Agency abroad offers you also the added advantage that after your big day, you’re already on honeymoon. The Tenerife based wedding planners, My Perfect Wedding (www. myperfectwedding.eu) will be at the London Wedding Show this month.

Carnaval 2011 Carnaval is celebrated in most towns and villages on the island, but the most impressive and renowned are in Santa Cruz and Puerto de la Cruz. Streets and plazas come to life with live music, kiosks selling food and drink, and of course the fun (and in some cases, the anonimity) of fancy dress. Carnaval usually begins in other locations around the island a few weeks later. In Santa Cruz and Puerto de la Cruz, the main events are planned during the first two weeks of March, but many of the contests are held in February, notably to elect the infant and senior Carnaval queens, and the best fancy dress, Murgas (satirical songs), and other singing and dancing groups. The main procession will be on Tuesday March, starting at 4pm. If you are planning to go and see the action, please do be careful with your possessions. You are advised not to take unnecessary valuable items such as jewellery, credit cards or too much cash with you. More events will be published in our March issue.

Mark Kozelek Tenerife Auditorio, February 17th, 9pm

Mark Kozelek is the singer/ songwriter and ex-frontman of Californian band Red House Painters. Here in Tenerife for one concert only he will perform songs from his latest solo album, Admiral Fell Promises, which is recorded under the Sun Kil Moon label. Kozelek has been a prolific song writer for the last two decades, and from 1992 to 1996, Red House Painters released a series of acclaimed albums, showcasing Kozelek’s intense, highly autobiographical songs. However

the group split following a parting with record label problems. In 2000 he began to record solo work, and has released a number of albums since then, showcasing

original work as well re-worked versions of others’ material. Information: 902 317 327, www.auditoriodetenerife.com

Royal Philharmonic Orchestra Tenerife AudiTorio, February 13th and 14th 8.30pm

Acknowledged as one of the UK’s most prodigious orchestras, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra (RPO) enjoys an

10

international reputation for bringing audiences worldwide first-class performances and the highest possible standards of music-making across a diverse range of musical repertoire. This was the vision of the Orchestra’s flamboyant founder Sir Thomas Beecham, whose legacy is maintained today as the Orchestra thrives under the exceptional direction of its new Artistic Director and Principal Conductor, Maestro Charles Dutoit. Frequently found in the recording studio, the Orchestra

records extensively for film and television as well as for all the major commercial record companies. The Orchestra also owns its own record label and is proud to be the first UK orchestra to stream its entire series of concerts live from Cadogan Hall. During the Canary Islands Music Festival the RPO will perform both in the Tenerife and Alfredo Kraus Auditoriums, with the performances in Gran Canaria on February 11th and 12th.

Take your teeth on holidays Dental Tourism in Tenerife More than two million British citizens who need dental treatment do not have it, due to its high cost in the UK. However, just a trip abroad makes dental care possible for them. According to a public opinion poll undertaken by various forms of media in Britain, two out of every five people do not go to see a dentist due to the high cost. With globalisation and the economic crisis, many Europeans travel to other countries in search of low cost, quality treatments, and this practice has generated the term ‘medical tourism’, and for the dental sector, ‘dental tourism’. Nowadays, Tenerife is also an attractive destination for Europeans, mainly from the United Kingdom, Germany, Ireland and Belgium, who come to this island in search of quality dental treatment at an affordable cost.

dental tourism has become known as a low cost service which, without neglecting quality and personal attention, offers prices up to 70 per cent lower than average Western European tariffs.

Medical Implant With the objective of being a pioneer in the exigent field of implantology and dental tourism, the Dental Medical Implant clinic began in Los Abrigos in the south of Tenerife, only five minutes from the Reina Sofia Airport. The clinic is led

Why Tenerife? As well as the sun and sea, and of course its climate which is often referred to as ‘eternal springtime’, Tenerife has dental clinics which offer a high quality service with professionals who have studied at the best European universities. These clinics also have the latest technology equipment, but despite this, their prices are much lower than the European average. So the phenomenon of 12

by Aldo Della Schiava (Switzerland), and his multidisciplinary team of dental surgeons, maxilofacial surgeons and anaesthetists are guaranteed by the Servicio Canario de Salud (Canarian health service) to apply sedation techniques and anaesthesia at the clinic. The clinic specialises in the delicate sector of implantology and works with superior quality materials, notably Swiss implants. They use large volumes and so they are able to keep costs low and therefore their prices are affordable. Their own dental laboratory allows for versatility, a rapid and trustworthy service, and a reduction of costs in the complex world of dental prostheses. Additionally, for attending to tourists, the clinic has a logistical structure prepared so that they can accommodate patients. They have medical

staff and assistants who speak English, German and Russian as well as French and Italian, and they also offer free transport and multi-lingual hosts so that they can attend to patients from the minute that they arrive at the airport. In this way, they can enjoy a pleasant break during their stay as well as having their dental treatment. Most importantly, the clinic forms part of a network of collaborating clinics in the main European capitals, guaranteeing continuity and dental cover for patients who live or travel frequently within Europe. With this structure in place, the same quality and advantages are offered to residents of Tenerife, hence it is no wonder that this clinic is the one where the most implants are fitted in the south of the island.

For Santa Cruz and the north of the island, Medical Implant offers its services at the renovated Hospital USP La Colina in Santa Cruz. The Winter sales in Santa Cruz Santa Cruz is the capital of Tenerife and also Spain‘s largest port, attracting numerous cruise liners with their many thousands of passengers throughout the year. The city, which has a rugged mountainous backdrop and is steeped in history and character, has excellent shops, restaurants, parks, museums, art galleries, theatre and a vibrant nightlife. Accessed by the TF1 motorway from the south or the TF5 from the north, the city has plenty of parking areas near to the centre, or you could travel by bus (there are regular fast non-stop services) or the local tram. However you choose to get there, a shopping spree is a must. Shopping in the sales is always fun, and you are sure to find some unusual bargains in terms of gifts and clothing in Santa Cruz where there is an ample variety of shops and chic boutiques. There is also a fabulous selection of cafés, bars and restaurants. There is just about everything in terms of food, traditional Spanish or Canarian cuisine, tascas which serve tapas or snacks, international restaurants of all types,

or fast food. The further off the beaten track you go, the better the food is. If you want to buy high quality food to take home, especially those special items, then don‘t forget to pop in to Marks & Spencer‘s Simply Food store in Calle Bethencourt Alfonso, just off the Plaza de España. It may be a good idea to take a bag for frozen food as well! The main shopping areas are Calle Castillo, an old-fashioned pedestrianised area which leads to a network of smaller cobbled streets and lanes filled with shops. El Corte Inglés, near to the bus and tram station, is a large high quality

most areas. There are some excellent museums and art galleries, as well as art in the streets and parks. Opposite the top of Calle Pilar (where you will find the Marks & Spencer clothing store), lies the Parque Garcia Sanabria with its magnificent flower clock. You could take the tourist train tour around the park or explore its botanical gardens and open air international art exhibition on foot. Santa Cruz also has much history to show you. Stroll around the city and see some of the magnificent monuments or visit the ruins of the Castillo de San Cristóbal, beneath the Plaza de España. If you are staying in Santa Cruz for the evening, then you could take advantage of the wide range of entertainment offered at the modern Auditorio de Tenerife or the Teatro Guimerá which dates back to 1849. Spend a day in the city, discover a corner of the real Tenerife, and do some shopping while you‘re there, you‘re sure to have a wonderful time! february 2011

driving Exploring Tenerife is so easy in a Hummer

The most recent versions of the iconic Hummer H2 feature numerous changes which include a more luxurious and comfortable interior, while retaining Hummer’s legendary off-road abilities and ruggedness. An all-new powertrain combines a 6.2-litre V8 petrol engine and six-speed automatic transmission resulting in improved efficiency, while state-of-the-art safety features are now standard. All H2 models (the five-door SUV seating up to seven people, or the double-cab SUT pick-up) are distinguished from previous models by larger openings in the seven-slot grille and the lower grille (to accommodate the increased cooling airflow demands of the powerful V8 engine) and the lower bumpers are painted silver, instead of black. Two new exterior metallic colours are available (Graystone and Solar Flare) expanding the choice to six, while the interior is available in Ebony or Sedona Red/Ebony with leather seat surfaces. The all-new interior features a completely redesigned dashboard, new seats – including an optional third-row seat for two passengers– new door trim panels, controls, rear-seat heating/air conditioning system and a premium audio system. Throughout the cabin there are softtouch materials and new, more tactile controls, while the new instrument panel with a six-gauge instrument cluster features a more refined appearance. The dashboard panel also features new vents which enhance heating or cooling comfort throughout – particularly for the second and third-row seat occupants. The new centre stack houses the climate controls and the premium BOSE audio and surround sound system. Additional comfort and convenience features that are standard or optional (depending on model) include a new rear-seat overhead DVD entertainment system, a satellite navigation 30

system, a rear-view camera system and heated windscreen washer fluid. The H2 now comes with a remote starting system which enables the vehicle’s interior to be heated or cooled prior to driving. The heart of the H2 is an all-new, aluminium, small-block 6.2-litre V8 engine with performance and fuel efficiency optimising technologies including variable valve timing. Lighter and more powerful, the new V8 boasts a 20 per cent power increase over the previous engine. It generates 393PS of power at 5,700rpm and a massive 574Nm of torque at 4,300 rpm. This engine is linked to a Hydra-Matic 6L80 six-speed electronically controlled automatic transmission with two overdrive ratios which help give an excellent balance of performance and fuel economy. For a more responsive driving experience, there is the ‘tap up/tap down’ capability which allows the driver to manually select gears sequentially (one at a time), with buttons on the steering wheel. This combination helps the H2 deliver an additional 1,700 lb (773

kg) of towing capacity – up from 6,500 lb (2,954 kg) to 8,200 pounds (3,727 kg). On-road, the H2 driving experience is quieter and more refined, thanks to new, re-tuned engine air intake and exhaust systems. On- and off-road, enhanced performance is assured by a revised steering system which has a quicker ratio and improved on-centre feel with increased selfcentring. Off-road, the H2’s 4x4 system has even greater ability, in keeping with its legendary status. The transfer case is stronger, the ‘crawl’ ratio is 39.7:1 – an improvement of about 20 per cent, the transmission’s ‘tap-up/ tap-down’ system provides more control on gradients and the new electronic traction control system is standard.

I

There are also significant enhancements to safety systems, including roof rail-mounted full length curtain air bags with rollover sensing system, front seat belt pretensioners, electronic stability control system with rollover mitigation technology, new traction control system and tyre pressure monitoring system as standard. Also new is an emergency brake assist (EBA) system which detects when a driver is braking unusually severely and delivers maximum brake pressure to help stop the vehicle faster and with more control. Despite changes inside and out, the H2’s foundations remain the same, true to the soul of Hummer. The fully welded ladder-type chassis frame gives outstanding strength, stiffness and dimensional accuracy. 31

I

driving

To achieve its exceptional and legendary off-road performance – including travelling through 508mm deep streams, climbing over 406mm steps and rocks, powering up 60 per cent gradients, coping with 40 per cent slide slopes and paddling through deep sand or snow – the H2 engine delivers massive (574 Nm) torque via its six speed transmission and heavy duty 4x4 drivetrain with 39.7:1 crawler ratio and lockable rear differential. The H2 has short overhangs for radical approach and departure angles, and exceptional ground clearance for minimal grounding on trails. Standard 17-inch wheels, heavy-duty independent front suspension and a five-link rear suspension provide superior handling, carrying and towing capability.

A new, four-channel anti-lock braking and traction control system (ABS/TCS) provides optimum control on slippery surfaces. In addition, the ABS is calibrated to detect and adjust its braking capabilities to rough off-road surfaces like gravel and potholes. The new TCS allows the driver to use a two-foot driving technique (one foot on the brake, the other on the accelerator), to achieve the best driving style for negotiating a steep, rocky trail. The TCS also includes the ability to gain traction through a single wheel. A self-levelling rear air spring suspension system is available for extreme offroad and towing requirements. It’s the ultimate vehicle for the independent spirit here in Tenerife. It’s like nothing else! More information on www.hummer.com Comfort and style, on, or off road

Thai Botánico

A unique dining experience I was delighted to see news of the opening of the new Thai restaurant for the south of Tenerife, the Thai Botánico. On a personal level, I was very excited to have the task of trying the food and reviewing this particular restaurant as, when I was younger, I spent many months travelling the beautiful country of Thailand. Some of my best memories are of the amazing food I was lucky enough to try whilst on my travels. One of the first things that strikes you as you enter the Thai Botánico is the absolutely stunning terrace area. To complement the exceptionally comfy furniture, there is a beautifully rich mixture of 34

lush plants and bamboo and a collection of amazing decorative pieces all the way from Thailand, Vietnam and Bali. These include stone Buddhas, mirrored statues and sculptured waterfalls containing images of Buddha - giving a real feeling of being in a restaurant perched on a hillside in Thailand. The interior is simply stunning, a three metre high Buddha stands dominant over the dining room next to a floor to ceiling wine cabinet containing wines from across the globe. Sumptuous furniture, subtle lighting, creating a warm inviting atmosphere and a perfect blend of natural stone, wood and glass, elevate your entire dining experience. There is the superb, friendly

service, which those who have tried Neil Ng´s Slow Boat or any of the other Venture restaurants will be all too familiar with. You will also find a large glass wall showing the very well lit, impeccably clean kitchen where I could see the Thai chefs at work. What’s best, I am very happy to report, is that the food is every bit as good as the food I enjoyed so much while on my travels in Thailand. Every ingredient seems to stand out individually, yet at the same time complement each other perfectly. Lydia, our waitress, was fantastic, she advised me on what dishes to try and how the spice level of every dish can be changed to suit your specific taste, which was great news for me as I have february 2011

Every dish has its own distinctive and delicious taste

never been able to take spices very well. The chefs got my Thai green curry absolutely perfect, the chicken was tender with just a hint of chilli registering on my lips without overpowering the delicate flavours in the food. I tried a variety of dishes starting with their Tom Yam Soup, which was deeply fragrant yet so light and the Phadthai which, being Thailand’s national dish was a personal benchmark for me, and I can happily say that it was just as good as when I was on my travels. What really struck me was the real individuality of every dish. Many of the same herbs and ingredients go into a lot of the different Thai dishes and you would expect some of the dishes to taste similar, however at the Thai Botánico every dish seems to have its own distinctive and delicious taste.

The Thai Botánico is the newest addition to Venture Restaurants, which already includes Teppenyaki and Bianco at Safari, Bianco Duo in Los Cristianos and Restaurant 88 in La Caleta. It is a joint venture between Robert Ng owner of Venture Restaurants and his brother Neil Ng, owner of the famous Slow Boat restaurant in Puerto Colón. The two of them combined have over 35 years experience in running some of the most popular and successful restaurants on the island and Thai

Botánico is a demonstration of all of that experience and more. This is a unique dining experience in itself, finally there is a great authentic taste of Thailand in south Tenerife for us all to enjoy. The Thai Botánico is located upstairs in the ever popular Safari shopping centre. Whether it be a light lunch or an evening feast Thai Botánico is a definite must for tourists and residents alike. Pierre Luigi Collina

Top ref Regarded by some as the best referee of all time, Pierre Luigi Collina, was visiting his family in Tenerife recently and has given his backing to an interesting proposal which can only be beneficial for the island’s prestige. Collina is a member of the referees committee of the UEFA and twice a year, top UEFA referees gather together for training and maintenance sessions. The suggestion was put forward that Tenerife’s Top Training Centre more

than meets the standards for these get-togethers, as does the hotel that has been proposed, the Jardín Tropical. After inspecting the venues, Collina agreed that both installations are up to the level necessary and the suggestion will be going forward to UEFA. If it’s accepted the proposed date for the meeting here would be the end of January 2012. Roberto Konrad, owner Tenerife Top Training, Pierre Luigi Collina and Ferdinand Lammertsma

Wolves in Tenerife One of the UK’s top rugby league sides, the Warrington Wolves, were in Tenerife recently for some ‘warm weather’ training. Not for the first time the team used the facilities at Costa Adeje T3, Tenerife Top Training, and coach Tony Smith told us that they had returned as they were so impressed with the standard of the centre as well as the

The winner of our fabulous Island Escape cruise from November was Gary Andrews. He and a companion will be on a marvellous Thomson holiday cruise, courtesy of Tenerife Sunshine early this year at a date to be agreed. This was without doubt our biggest prize and our biggest reader response yet in The Magazine. As Gary is a UK resident, a friend of the family, Gina Case, agreed to collect his gift certificate from Tenerife Sunshine’s Saloni Balani.

FITUR The Canary Islands stand at the Feria Internacional de Turismo in Madrid was inaugurated on January 19th, by the president of the Canarian Government, Paulino Rivero, and the vice councillor for tourism, Ricardo Fernรกndez de la Puente Armas. This international tourism fair is considered the third most important in the sector, behind the WTM in London and the ITB in Berlin. The Tenerife Cabildo used their time at Fitur to concentrate on increasing charter and scheduled air connections to the Island.

Fiestas of San Sebastián The fiesta of San Sebastián is one of the most significant of the year, not only for the people of Adeje, but also for the thousands who come from all over the island bringing their animals to be blessed, and thousands more tourists who specifically book their holidays in Tenerife to coincide with this event held on January 20th and which is estimated to have been celebrated since the 16th century.

The fiesta was attended by people of all ages

40

The location is a little corner of Costa Adeje called San Sebastián, which is next to La Caleta and the stars of the day are the animals who have been brought along to be blessed following their traditional dip in the sea at La Enramada beach. It is a sight to be seen, Adeje council estimate that around 30,000 people, young and old, were there to enjoy it. If you weren’t one of them, why not make a note in your diary to be there next year?

traditions

Even the no-man’s land between the summer high tide mark and the coast were exploited by our island predecessors. The salters, or salt makers used this fringe to make the most of the crystalline waters off the coast to make sea salt. Nowadays with artificial beaches and increased offshore pollution there are sadly few areas which are still fit for production and even fewer where this arduous task is carried out, but visitors to La Caleta de Interián in the north west of the island can still see the salt pans along the coast and, during the summer, watch the 15-20 salters at work. Salt gathering areas are passed on from one generation to the next, or left to friends who will carry on the work. We spoke to Candelaria Méndez Báez, known locally as Inma, who has been collecting salt for 25 years since she moved to the area. She has always enjoyed local traditions and does her best to learn as much as she can and pass it on to the younger generations. A neighbour who became a close friend had her own salt collecting area. Each of the gatherers has their own salt pans which are respected between themselves and by passersby and, so far, by the administrations. The neighbour’s daughter had no interest in such hard work, so Inma helped her and in

44

time inherited her site. Later another neighbour left her a further section and she works around 20m2 of salt basins each summer. Collection is only possible in June, July and August. The first task is to clean the salt flat with fresh seawater and a good scrubbing brush, before rinsing and drying out thoroughly. If the walls of the collection basin are damaged they need to be mended with stones and cement. Once the basins are cleaned the salters begin to fill them with buckets of water from seapools which already have a higher concentration of salt than the open sea. It takes around 15 buckets of saltwater to produce one bucket of salt and Inma collects about 200 kilos of salt over the summer. The water filters a little initially,

but soon begins to pool. As the crystals form on the surface of the water, every day the salters crisscross the surface with their fingers to drop the flakes back into the saline solution and continue the evaporation process. Depending on the amount of sunshine and the temperature, it takes between four and seven days for a pool of seawater to become a salt flat of collectable marine salt and if there is a storm or an unusual high tide, all the work has to start again from the very beginning. No special clothing is needed, just something comfortable and safe footwear for the rocky beach and the only tools used for collection are a spoon and a bucket! Traditionally the salter makes the sign of the cross in the water before gathering the salty harvest. The salt is still damp when it is collected and needs to be drained. In olden days february 2011

it was strained through cloth, but nowadays it is more common to use a plastic bag pierced underneath with a skewer. The final drying out process is under full sun on a fine weave cloth and any impurities are picked out at this stage. The resultant salt is brilliant white and truly delicious. Salt has become demonised to some extent in latter years, but it is still essential in the diet. It has formed an important part of the human diet for centuries. Gandhi organised a 240 mile march to force the British to abolish the salt tax in India and it was used by the Romans to pay their troops. Before fridges and freezers it was highly prized as a preserving agent and for hundreds if not thousands of years it has been used in religious ceremonies, beauty treatments, medicine and by witches in rituals for purification, protection and blessings. Perhaps this latter could be one of the reasons why the salters still work in La Caleta de InterĂan as popular legend affirms that it has a long history of witchcraft.

David Shaw David and Barbara Shaw first came to south Tenerife on holiday in the early 80s and bought an apartment. It was a good time to buy, and they could see that Tenerife had a brilliant future so they bought two more and started renting them out. Their clients became friends and saw the potential too, buying their own apartments. David was asked to manage their rentals. At that time, Unijet had an incentive scheme – if you sold ten flights you would get one free. It wasn‘t essential to be a travel agent, so when people calling David for accommodation asked

46

about flights too, he was able to oblige. David also kept busy delivering yachts built in the UK to locations in Europe and beyond. Eventually Barbara suggested that they move to Tenerife, as David could continue doing the same job. Meanwhile, Unijet was growing, with three to four weekly flights linking the UK with Tenerife and they needed someone to work at the airport. Barbara took the job, and that is how they began in the travel business. Eventually, Barbara suggested that she and David opened a travel agency. At that time, you couldn‘t do this without a Spanish partner, but they found a person who they thought was

a perfect candidate. That arrangement lasted for a year. The Spanish partner was happy to be bought out, and the couple continued on their own. They had purchased their Parque Margarita premises well before they started the Travel Shop, which really took off as pre-Travel Shop, there were restrictions on the sales of charter flight seats. David told us, “I believe we were the first to sell charter flights to ex-pats going back to the UK”, and commented, “it was just good at the time, people were coming here and wanting to buy property, and it was being snapped up before it was built”. Even unfinished projects such as the Hotel Conquistador and the Torres del Sol complex, where the developers had earlier run out of money, were bought up in the mid-80s. However, by the 90s, everyone was selling charter flights, including ‘cowboys‘ who had an off-putting effect on customers. “Nothing lasts for ever”, says David. In 2008, Barbara began to miss the winter season and her family, and they decided to move back to the UK. The Travel Shop goes on, with David‘s reliable team looking after business here. Meanwhile, back in the UK David still delivers yachts but he has had a pet project to work on. He told us, “in readiness for moving back I had bought a house near Eastbourne. It‘s a lovely spot, it looks across the South Downs to the sea and in the middle of this view is a lighthouse. When, by chance, it came up for sale, I bought it in an almost foolhardy way”. The Belle Tout lighthouse has an amazing history, it was built in 1832 and decommissioned in 1902. At one time the BBC bought it and used it for filming. It was featured in the remake of the film Brighton Rock and the series The Life and Loves of a She-Devil. It sits on an eroding chalk cliff 300 metres high and in 1999 it was moved back from the edge. All 850 tons of it were jacked up and underpinned, and with 22 computer controlled hydraulic jacks it was february 2011

moved back 57 feet. The support beams are still in place, so in the case of further erosion it can be moved again. David and Barbara have lovingly and painstakingly restored this lighthouse and converted it into an extremely unusual and attractive bed and breakfast venue which is proving popular for short breaks. The rooms each have a different design: Old or New England, Beach Hut, Captain‘s Cabin, and there is even the circular Keeper‘s Loft which is the original and quirky lighthouse keeper‘s bunk room. For more information about accommodation for an unforgettable UK break and the history of the Belle Tout lighthouse, go to www.belletout.co.uk. Finally, David’s advice: “Try to recognise an opportunity when you see it. Many people do. Many people regret not doing so. You have to take a risk or two, and sometimes you’ll get it right!”

St. Valentine’s Day is when love and affection between intimate companions, or even anonymous lovers, is declared. Traditional Valentine’s cards have now largely been replaced by text messages, emails and ecards, but in many cases, gifts are still given which can be utterly romantic, funny or just plain useful. competition

Holding court at Carnaval If you’re a seasoned carnival cavorter, you can skip to the bottom of the page and find out how to win two tickets for the Gala for the Election of the Queen. If, however, you have yet to discover the joys that await, read on. Tenerife’s ‘Carnaval’ is rightly considered one of the best in the world, ranked by many second only to Rio. Starting in February the party will carry on for weeks on the streets of Santa Cruz, with scheduled events like the Murgas (satirical songs) and Comparsas (dance) competitions taking place alongside various all night parties with live music. And of course there are the queens, queens of every age, sex, creed and colour, and the three elected queens, the junior and senior behind one of the main events of Carnaval, the Gala for the Election

of the Reina de Carnaval. This year the event takes place on March 2nd in the Recinto Ferial. The costumes the women wear are constructive creations, huge, moving on wheels around the stage, and the wearers themselves have to have shoulders as well as nerves of steel to literally carry it off. There’s a fair sprinkling of singing and dancing throughout the evening, it’s really a riot of colour. If you’re not lucky enough to see the election, don’t worry, on Friday March 4th (7pm) and Tuesday March 8th (4pm) there’s a huge parade through the city’s main streets featuring all the main participants and winning queens. And a word to the wise, if you are attending any of the street parties or parades, make sure you get into the spirit by dressing up yourself.

Win tickets to the Election Gala of the Reina de Carnaval We have two sets of two tickets to give away to this great fun event, on March 2nd. To enter, answer the following question and send your answer, along with your name and a contact telephone number (essential), by mail, email (Magazine@icmedia.eu) or fax (details on page 4). The closing date for receipt of entries is 10am on Friday February 25th and the winner will be drawn and notified later that day. Island Connections Media Group staff and their families are not eligible to enter. One entry per person only. If the first name drawn cannot be contacted within 24 hours, the second name chosen will be deemed to be the winner and so on.
