Fuentealta and AECC
Bottled water company Fuentealta of Vilaflor organised a campaign which took place at El Corte Inglés, Avenida 3 de Mayo in Santa Cruz between January 28th and February 5th during which 25 per cent of the proceeds of sale of their water was to be donated to AECC, the Asociación Española Contra el Cancer. Following the campaign, entitled Unete a Fuentealta y lucha contra el cáncer, José María Cortés, commercial director of Fuentealta, and Mónica Rumeu, social work director of CIO (the company which owns Fuentealta), presented a cheque for €1,000 to Don Juan Julio Fernández, provincial president of AECC, which is to be destined towards investigation and the fight against cancer.

what‘s new TUI prize for Hotel Jardín Tecina The Hotel Jardín Tecina was recently awarded the Gulet Hotelo 2011 prize at the prestigious ITB tourism fair in Berlin. The tour operator TUI Austria, under the brand Gulet Touristik, member of the World of TUI, awarded the prize to this delightful La Gomera hotel which has already received an array of awards over the years.
The prize, Gulet Hotelo, is for the best establishments selected from the hotels which TUI markets around the world, hence the Hotel Jardín Tecina is now included amongst the 100 most popular and highly valued hotels in the world. Not surprising really, with its location atop a cliff overlooking Puerto Santiago and the ocean, the Hotel Jardín Tecina complex is surrounded by lush gardens and has all the facilities needed for a relaxing break. The selection for this award is made via thousands of international customer ratings relating to service, installations, gastronomy and activities including sport and entertainment.

La Vieja Morla Tenerife band La Vieja Morla began at the end of 2005 when Jesús Arteaga (Susi) (vocals and guitar) and Oliver Guerrero (drums) started a new project with Adrián Arvelo (bass guitar), and eventually in 2010, solo guitarrist Álvaro Calero joined them. Romería de Tegueste The Romería de San Marcos is possibly the most popular in the Canaries, and is celebrated every year on the Sunday nearest to April 25. It is one of the folklore events on the island with the most participants, and marks the beginning of the romería season in Tenerife.

best folklore artists from all over the Canary Islands meet there. This year it will be the 22nd edition.

Easter celebrations Easter is the most important event in the Christian religious calendar, and the main events take place between Palm Sunday and Easter Sunday (April 17 to 24). The bank holidays are on Maundy Thursday and Good Friday. The most notable towns to visit during Easter are La Laguna, Adeje, GĂźĂmar, Garachico, Los Realejos, La Orotava, Puerto de la Cruz, Tacoronte, Candelaria and Granadilla. There, you can see the Canarian people adding fervour, costumes and colour to some of the most religious and cultural acts. On Maundy Thursday, most churches and chapels are opened to the public to view the Eucharistic figures, which have been crafted over the years. There are processions in most major towns, with statues of incalculable historical and artistic value being carried, especially on Easter Thursday and Good Friday when you can see the Magna and Silent processions. The most notable of

these is La Laguna with formal processions taking place all week which are said to be the most traditional in all the Canary Islands. Additionally, some towns have also developed a tradition of staging passion plays in the street, and in the south of Tenerife, Adeje is more than worthy of a visit. This is an extremely professional production performed by more than 300 local actors, the majority amateur. The stages are set all along the Calle Grande and great effort is put into this annual event which covers from the Last Supper to the Crucifixion. The standard of the individual stage sets and costumes is nothing short of amazing and somehow improves each year. It begins at midday on Good Friday and lasts for approximately two hours. You will need to arrive early in order to secure a parking place and a good vantage point.

The trade fair brings together people in the trade and the

International Dance Day Auditorio de Tenerife Adán Martín, April 29th, all day
International Dance Day (World Dance Day) has been celebrated all over the world on April 29th since 1982. The date was suggested by Pyotr Gusev to commemorate the birthday of Jean-Georges Noverre. It is organised internationally through the International Dance Council, an umbrella council within UNESCO. Among the goals of the Dance Day are to increase awareness of the importance of dance among the general public, as well as to persuade governments all over

the world to provide a proper place for dance in all systems of education, from primary to higher. New health centre Residents and visitors to South Tenerife have a new health facility at their disposal since the International Beauty Life centre opened in Edificio Perla Blanca, Callao Salvaje. At the well attended opening evening the new private centre’s director Dr Daniele Taddei told The Magazine that they were already offering a service with eight qualified doctors and four nurses, including general medicine, cosmetic surgery, orthopaedic and trauma treatment, physiotherapy, and general surgical consultations and would soon be adding a range of new specialities including paediatric medicine and gynaecology to the list. Patients attending can benefit from a translation service with English, Spanish, German, Russian, Italian, Portuguese and French catered for, and the clinic accepts an increasing number of clients holding private medical insurances.

La Orotava
History and traditions The town of La Orotava forms part of the ancient Menceyato de Taoro, one of the nine Guanche kingdoms that Tenerife was divided into until 1496, the year of the conquest of the island. After that, the conquistador Alonso Fernández de Lugo distributed the land and areas occupied by water to the beneficiaries of the conquest, a deed which caused many a conflict. The centre of the town, the oldest part, was declared a Monument of National Historic and Artistic Interest in 1976, and deserves to be discovered in depth. Allow plenty of time to stroll the cobbled streets and appreciate the town’s magnificence, its monumental architecture, its personality, and its attractive Canarian balconies, patios and courtyards, plazas and mansions, some of which are now beautiful rural hotels or restaurants. The nucleus of the town is without doubt the parish church of Nuestra Señora de la Concepción, a unique building in the Canarian archipelago which displays an ample repertoire of artistic styles and seems to have an energy of its own. There are a series of gardens to explore in and about the town centre, one of which is La Hijuela del Botánico (behind the Ayuntamiento),
created to complement the Botánical Gardens nearer to the coast and Puerto de la Cruz, in the introduction and acclimatisation of plants from far off lands. It contains some 100 species from South and Central America, Africa and Australia. Another is the Jardín Victoria, the only Masonic garden in Spain, with recreation and green areas, ample footpaths, a wide variety of flowers and a magnificent mausoleum created by French architect Adolph Coquet in 1882. See if you can decipher the secrets held within this garden’s symbology. Visit the town in the two or three weeks before Corpus Christi in June, and you can see a magnificent sand carpet being created in the plaza in front of the Ayuntamiento building,

If you visit on the day of the Corpus Christi celebrations, you will see the narrow cobbled streets carpeted with sand and flower petals in beautiful designs and emitting almost intoxicating aromas. Outside of the town, a network of footpaths allows you to explore the mountainous part of the district of La Orotava, where you can see unique forms of vegetation, and even a trout

farm. There are recreational and camping areas, and further footpaths which connect with the mountain trekking routes within the Parque Nacional de las Ca帽adas del Teide. La Orotava is also the home of Pinolere, which is famous for its annual craft fair attracting artesans from all over the Canary islands and which takes place early in every September. El Rinc贸n, near the coast, is an area of great interest for its countryside and agriculture, and is the home of three exotic beaches covered in black sand, El Bollullo, Los Patos and El Anc贸n. The Valle de La Orotava is an immensely beautiful area which sits at the foot of Mount Teide and extends to the sea with its green carpet of banana plantations interspersed by reservoirs and houses. This beauty was recognised by German naturalist Alexander Von Humboldt who visited Tenerife in 1799 and was literally brought to his knees by the views. Now a
mirador has been erected in the exact place from where Humboldt loved to gaze at this valley. 11 years after construction began, the Mirador de Humboldt has finally been opened. Not only a marvellous viewpoint, the Mirador also has a cultural aspect. It includes an exhibition room which could also host cultural acts such as concerts or theatrical works, a cafeteria with a terrace, a gift shop selling typical Canarian handcrafts, products and wines, and a tourist information point. To complement the Mirador further, the lower floor houses a restaurant, which specialises in Canarian gastronomy and wines, and which we will feature in a future edition of The Magazine. Finally, occupying a very special place in the precinct is a statue of the German naturalist and explorer, Alexander von Humboldt, who gave his name to this Mirador.

The seating for one of the tables resembles a typical Canarian fishing boat, and the rattan ceiling is hung with fishing nets through which trailing plants wind their way like vines. The atmosphere is further enhanced by the tempting aromas emanating from the kitchen. Jorge is a firm believer in the importance of fresh food, and the difference that makes to a meal. Everything is fresh and cooked to order at Sauco, just like grandma used to make in the days before freezers were invented. Sauco specialises in pasta and pizza, and you may even catch a glimpse of the chef lovingly making the pasta, pastry and bread on the premises. It just couldn’t be any fresher! The 34

There are also steaks, lamb chops, Iberian pork, chicken, tuna and bogavante (like lobster) dishes as well as 22 delicious homemade pizzas, so what do you choose? We selected our starter from the daily board, Goat’s cheese salad, and followed

with a Carbonara and a Pizza Sauco. We decided to order a few dishes and share them between us. The salad was beautifully presented, the grilled goat’s cheese perched atop a selection of crisp fresh leaves, the most predominant of which was rucula (rocket), and garnished with slices of orange, halved cherry tomatoes and walnuts – a deliciously light way to start a meal, and a dish to be savoured. certainly didn’t disappoint us either – it was mouthwatering, rich, creamy and yet light, a wonderful example of how fresh pasta makes all the difference. The Pizza Sauco arrived in all its splendour, made with typical fine Italian pastry and topped with tomato, ham, cheese and garnished with chopped fresh tomato and rucula, an absolutely wonderful combination. Don’t leave Sauco without trying one of their homemade desserts – for example lemon sorbet, banana flambée or tiramisu, and to accompany your meal, there is a wide selection of predominantly Spanish and Italian wines as well as a full bar. Sauco is thoroughly recommended to anyone who appreciates food made with really fresh ingredients, served with a smile. Offering three levels and lengths of walk from 340 metres to 1,272 metres, the shortest of which is wheelchair and pushchair friendly, the routes take you through a lovely part of the evergreen forest just next to the parking area at the Cruz de Carmen. St Patrick’s Day
Irish eyes were smiling There may be only 4.5 million people born in Ireland but there’s over 80 million worldwide claiming some link to the Emerald Isle, and lots of them were in South Tenerife on March 17th. Entering Playa de las Américas from lunchtime on St Patrick’s day you might have been forgiven for thinking you were in a sunny corner of the auld sod. Regardless of country of origin, everyone was Irish for the day. Green, white and orange balloons fluttered from every bar terrace and awning, thousands of merry revellers were dressed in all kinds of costumes, from the sublime to the delightfully ridiculous to the downright silly. There were more than a few pretenders to St Patrick’s throne, but it was all good fun and great craic!

Tenerife Ladies Match Play Tenerife is to host the spectacular Ladies Match Play between June 9th and 12th at Golf Las Américas, Arona.

Tenerife Ladies Match Play is a new creation by Turismo de Tenerife. It is a professional tournament which is part of the Ladies European Tour, and whose playing characteristics do not yet exist within the programme for this professional ladies circuit. The Cabildo first vice president and councillor for tourism, José Manuel Bermúdez, indicated that this tournament will, “convert the island into the world capital for this sport for several days, as happened in previous years”. He emphasised the importance of this event, not only from the sporting perspective but also from the promotional point of view, as
the island will be seen as a privileged location for year round golfing, a sport which attracts thousands of players who also take advantage of the island’s other attractions during their stay. The new Tenerife Ladies Match Play will be reserved for only 32 players, the first 30 from European Professional Ranking and two guest players, which will ensure exclusivity. As the game format will be fundamentally Match Play (direct eliminations prior to a day of Stroke Play), the tournament will be even more exciting, with each hole having a special importance. Also, 2011 is the year of the Solheim Cup, and Tenerife Ladies Match Play offers an excellent opportunity for European players to practice in Match Play mode, which will without doubt be decisive in the eagerly awaited duel against the North American team for the Solheim Cup. Turismo de Tenerife has put the company Deporte & Business in charge of running the tournament. They have designed a playing format which establishes, for June 9th, a ProAm with individual classification for the professionals which will permit the first table of eliminations to be established. In the following days the final 16 will be selected on June 10th and the final eight on June 11th, while June 12th will be reserved for an 18-hole round of Stroke Play in which the eight best players will take part. All these players will be classified at the same time and will all win a cash prize. april 2011

Melchior the man
Avuncular in aspect and generally smiling, as a popular and respected politician, Tenerife’s Island President, Ricardo Melchior, is the exception that proves the rule. The last time we interviewed Ricardo in 2003 he was talking about retiring in early 2008 yet here we are in 2011 and he is standing for election for another term. When we reminded him of this, he laughed and affirmed that this would be, “the last time for sure. We have some very important projects on the go which I wanted to see through.” One of these is the recently inaugurated Neutral Access Point network, linking the Canaries and Western Africa with 42
the rest of the world which is an enormous business opportunity for the islands and will mean that the, “neighbouring countries will have the opportunity to develop”. Others are the projects for the northern and southern trains. In addition Ricardo feels that, “the island is in a difficult situation economically and socially, this is definitely not the time to jump ship”. A dedicated political life leaves little time for hobbies, but Ricardo still manages to squeeze in time for a few. Music is a great love, Classical, melodic, folk music and some rock and ecclesiastical music. Classical choices include Tchaikovsky, Beethoven and Brahms, a melodic favourite is Sinatra and his rock choices settle on the Scorpions, Buddy Holly, Elvis, The Rolling Stones and The Beatles. On folk music his choices are not restricted just to his Canarian favourites of Los Sabandeños and Benito Cabrera, but take in Celtic music both from Galicia and from Ireland and Wales. His enjoyment of the written word is restricted these days – he’s far too used to speed-reading the mountain of paperwork that forms part of his remit, but two books that have been constant companions for the last 40 years are La Incógnita del Hombre and La Conducta en la Vida by Alexis Carrel and more recently The World is Flat by Thomas Friedman. hobby, but for Ricardo it’s more about relaxing than what he might catch. He still goes through the same routine he would have carried out as a child, finding the worms and treating them to make suitable bait. He fishes from a rock using a long fixed rod. It’s precious private time and, “a good reminder that man isn’t as bright as he thinks he is since most of the time the fish beat us” he laughed. Massively influential in the promotion of the Tenerife wines and the improvement, in particular of the bottled wines in the island, it’s not surprising that wine is another interest of this genial individual. “Wine is fundamental in our culture and very significant in the Latin and Mediterranean culture in general,” he underlined. The Tenerife viticulture will undoubtedly figure in the book that he is planning to write, when he retires, on the land and traditions - the things that are meaningful to Tinerfeños and Canarians. Gardening is another pleasure, possibly one bred in the bone, as among his ancestors are the famous gardeners and rose breeders the Scottish Booth family who worked in Hamburg for many years. One of the gardens they created there is now a protected listed garden Ricardo proudly told us, and they

created a new rose hybrid, the Queen of Denmark, of which he has an example in his garden. His family and much loved animals will also benefit in Ricardo’s retirement plans and he will undoubtedly be able to spend more time on his unusual hobby of collecting the regimental batons carried by officers of British regiments. He already owns over thirty examples. A long holiday is also likely to figure on his retirement wish list. In all his time in public office here he will not go far from the island or for more than five days during a holiday period, as the Cabildo holiday time coincides with the month in the year when there’s most likelihood of forest fires and he feels he should be close. In a long political career he has met many important figures, but although Bill Clinton, Simón Pérez, Juan Pablo II and Desmond Tutu 44
are among the people who most impressed him, the first name that passed his lips was Mother Theresa of Calcutta, whom he was lucky enough to have as a neighbour during a flight from Madrid to Rome. In the past, Ricardo has spoken of how the importance of dreams and belief in what you are working on are as important as hard work and putting in the hours. He still has that vision and that drive. He believes it’s not only necessary for him to face each day with, “happiness, strength and conviction” but to be able to generate and spread that enthusiasm to others. It’s something he has successfully dedicated his life to both in and out of politics and will unquestionably continue into retirement whenever that comes along.

Auditorio Infanta Leonor The new auditorium for the district of Arona, situated next to the Los Cristianos Cultural Centre, was inaugurated on March 11th by the alcalde, José Alberto Gonzalez Reverón in the company of councillor for culture Miguel Ángel Méndez, Cabildo president Ricardo Melchior and Cabildo director of culture Cristóbal de La Rosa amongst others. Guests enjoyed a programme of entertainment which included performances by the Teatrokdos company, a trio formed by Candelaria González (soprano), Pancho Delgado (guitar) and Jeremías Martín (piano), singer Fabiola Socas accompanied by Polo Ortiz, as well as the Orquesta Sinfónica Contemporánea and Coral Nova Pax, accompanied by the Ballet de Tenerife.

Michael Bolton
Sun Live Festival Canarias have gone across the Atlantic to find their next concert star, and Michael Bolton will take to the stage at Golf Costa Adeje on July 8th. One of the great American singer/songwriters, Bolton has a string of hits to his name, has sold more than 53 million albums worldwide, with Billboard Nº Ones, not to mention two Grammys for best male singer, American Music Awards and many more accolades for his songwriting skills. He has a star named after him on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, but in July he will walk onto the stage at Golf Costa Adeje, following in the footsteps of Elton John, Rod Stewart and Simply Red who have helped convert the Sun 50
Live Festival Canarias into a name that means the best in music for South Tenerife. Most of Bolton’s recordings are original material; however, he has also written songs for such artists as Conway Twitty, Barbra Streisand, Kiss, Kenny Rogers and Kenny G among many others. He has also worked with BabyFace, Diane Warren, and Bob Dylan and as a singer has performed with Plácido Domingo, Luciano Pavarotti, José Carreras, Tony Cetinski, Lucia Aliberti, Renée Fleming, Zucchero, Patti LaBelle, Celine Dion, Ray Charles, Percy Sledge, Wynonna Judd, and BB King. According to Gaspare Bertolucci, artistic director of Sun Live Festival Canarias, this will be Bolton’s first concert in the Canaries, and of course it’s april 2011
