The motor company and the designers joined hands in this programme developed by the Cabildo of Gran Canaria, with Toyota Street Fashion – a contest aimed at Moda Cálida’s designers – who turned plain vehicles into real designer cars, giving a new meaning to the term ‘personalised vehicle’. Three Toyota Urban Cruisers were given their finishing touches before being displayed in Calle Triana, Las Palmas. The designers selected were Elena Rubio, Delia Miranda and María González, and they were accompanied for the event by designer Modesto Lomba and Inés Jiménez, the Gran Canaria Cabildo’s councillor for industry.

Swan Lake on Ice The Imperial Ice Stars bring Swan Lake on Ice to the Tenerife Auditorium Adán Martín in Santa Cruz from 25th to 29th May. They have performed for three million people across five continents and have toured Australia, New Zealand, Hong Kong, Singapore, Japan, UK, Germany, Spain, Holland, France, Belgium, Finland, Monaco, South Africa, Canada, Russia, and even Cyprus where they performed in an outdoor amphitheatre in temperatures of 40ºC. Some of the dancers started skating from as young as the age of four, and between them they have won over 250 competition medals. The technical team behind the

Imperial Ice Stars have perfected the art of creating on-stage ice rinks to provide the ideal skating surface for the performers. Two chillers, over 16 kilometres of refrigeration pipes and 600 gallons of water are used to create 14 tonnes of ice, all in the space of 34 hours.

The Imperial Ice Stars began in 2004 as a joint venture between two leading producers of live entertainment, Tony Mercer and James Cundall, and businessman and former speed-skater Vladislav Onenin. The Daily Telegraph describes this show as “a great night out for all the family”, and the cast as “simply superb”, whilst the Sunday Telegraph says, “The Imperial Ice Stars are to skating what Cirque du Soleil is to circus; inspiring, original, and great theatre”. The official opening of the new church in Callao Salvaje was attended by Adeje mayor José Miguel Rodríguez Fraga and the bishop of Tenerife His Excellency Bernardo Álvarez. There were obviously a number of different branches of Christianity represented, as was made clear too by the mayor in his brief speech when he mentioned that the church would be open for Anglican as well as RC services in the future. Inside the church, the two hour ceremony, with a full mass and blessing of all the church’s installations, was followed by tapas and drinks outside by the village cultural centre, and everyone seemed more than happy that the church was open at last.

Simone and Trinitario The wedding of Simone Kent and Trinitario Sanchez Rodriguez took place at La Caleta on Saturday 9th April. The ceremony and the fabulous reception, held at the Costa Adeje Palace, were attended by a wide ranging group of friends and family, including the four children they have between them. Simone works at the Castillo San Miguel, and Trinitario is a Chief Inspector in the Policia Nacional hence all those uniforms!

This exhibition is organised under the auspices of the Tenerife museums organisation in conjunction with the foundation established to promote the steamship Correíllo La Palma as a maritime museum and a promotional platform for the Canarian seas. Visitors can look back in time, and see both the life and times of this particular vessel, placed within the context of the political, social and economic times of its service in the waters of the archipelago.

The significant changes in steam boats both as methods of transport, cargo and mail delivery are also explored. The Correíllo La Palma is considered much more than a boat, and is a treasured part of

Born in China, Zuo Zhang started to learn to play the piano at the age of five, studying in Germany. Zuo Zhang has won many competitions and performances in China and abroad including the first prize in the American Gina Bachauer International Young Artists Piano Competition,

Conventional and alternative medicine working together

Have you ever had a medical problem which, no matter how many times you have returned to the clinic to sort it out, and how many tests have been made, your traditional physician just cannot seem to find a cause? Sometimes traditional medicine is just not enough, and it could be that subconsciously you are harbouring some unresolved emotional issues which are affecting you physically and making you feel unwell. Finding the root of the problem, and having it solved is easy. Yes, you will have to pay, but no more than maybe a facial treatment, even a pot of cream to soften your wrinkles, or a new bottle of seductive aftershave lotion. One doctor in Tenerife was curious enough to question traditional medicine. She was aware from personal experience that some problems were not solely scientific in nature, cases where tests revealed nothing. She knew in her own heart that there is much more to the human body than that which is purely physical. María Nieves Rodríguez has spent 20 years in traditional medicine, working in accident and emergency units, and has more recently spent much time studying alternative medicine and spiritual matters, working with Colin Bloy (founder of Fountain International) to discover what part they played in our physical health. She studied several advanced alternative techniques including cellular regeneration, energy fields and quantum medicine, which works on the principal that each and every cell in our bodies has a memory, and is linked to the others by an invisible network – our energy field which, in turn, is inextricably linked with the whole Universe. Once you can understand this theory, maybe you can see how emotional, spiritual or psychological trauma, guilt or stress, or even events in

the Universe can affect our physical wellbeing and form a blockage. If an area is blocked, in the worst case scenario it could develop into a degenerative disease such as cancer. María Nieves works to release these subconscious blocks from the past which have been recorded in the cells of our bodies. She not only seeks physical wellbeing for her patients, but emotional, spiritual and psychological health too. She seeks to balance various centres – there could be a problem with your skeletal system or an energy field. By moving her hands slowly over your body, she can find the problem area, and says that she does not need to talk much with her patients, just to confirm that you maybe have an ache here, or a pain there. It is, however, evident that she dedicates much time to each and every one. The basis of all treatments is for the patient to connect with his inner self, to recognise who he is and open his consciousness. María comments, “we are more responsible for our own illnesses than we think. We fail to go with our inner selves and we concentrate too much on what’s going on outside, our obligations, being late for appointments, etc.” In many ways, she is right. Ask yourself how many times you have taken your cat or dog to the 13

vet, and paid the bill without giving it a second thought. But generally, you would think twice or maybe three times about caring for yourself in the same way. María Nieves will find a method which is best suited to solve each individual problem, to rectify the course of your own electromagnetic energy and this could be, for example, acupuncture, magnetism, Ayurvedic medicine, homeopathic medicines, Bach flower remedies, or a combination of these and traditional medicines.

She may not necessarily use acupuncture needles, but will often work with acupuncture points. Spain in general is way behind much of the rest of the world in accepting alternative treatments and medicines, but María comments that, “humanity in general is now tending to open up to these ideas, that one form of medicine can complement the other”. She has experience of one and the knowledge of the other, and brings the two worlds together. She would like to find more doctors who have a similar vision. “At the moment, we are saving bodies, but not doing much for their souls”. From a patient’s point of view, you will feel a change after your very first visit to see María. Subconsciously there will be an emotional release and you will feel tremendously relaxed. Cruise winners The lucky winners of the wonderful cruise, donated by Tenerife Sunshine.com last November, flew to Tenerife over Easter to see something of the island and to go off on their spectacular prizewinning trip. Gary Andrews and his fiancée Emma Storey from Leicestershire were not expecting a, “big holiday” this year as they are saving to get married, but winning the Thomson’s Colourful Coasts cruise on board the Island Escape changed their plans. They had a fabulous time, visiting Gran Canaria, La Palma, Madeira, Morocco and Lanzarote on their cruise. Their favourite stop off was Gran Canaria where they coincided with a major rally and had a great time watching that most of the day. They were very impressed with the choice of entertainment on board the Island 26

Escape, “lots to do every night, but we were rubbish at the quizzes” and at the high standard of the food, “something different each day, Mexican, Italian, Chinese, Indian,” always a wide choice of international cuisine, especially the breakfasts which Gary described as, “awesome. As the customers were mainly British, they had really good British sausages and bacon!” Gary and Emma also spent some time before and after the cruise travelling all over Tenerife, visiting some of the iconic areas and two of the island’s must sees – Siam Park, “brilliant” and Loro Parque, “a great day out. We saw the killer whales twice”. The roadster‘s efficiency and sporty flair come courtesy of powerful new 4- and 6-cylinder engines featuring the standard specification ECO start/stop function. With their superb performance levels, they are up to 25 per cent more economical than their predecessors. With a unique set of safety equipment and a wealth of technical innovations, the SLK once again sets the benchmark in its class. In terms of design, the upright radiator grille stands proud and confident in the wind, facilitating the long and well proportioned bonnet and with its rearward light-catching contours, hinting at the roadster’s dynamic qualities. Alternatively there is the panoramic vario-roof with tinted glass. The third variant is a world premiere, the panoramic vario-roof with Magic Sky Control. This glass roof switches to light or dark as you wish at the press of a button. When light it is virtually transparent, offering an open-air experience even in cold weather. In its dark state the roof provides welcome shade and prevents the interior from heating up when the sun’s rays are very intense. In other words: a feel-good atmosphere at the touch of a button. The innovative draught-stop for the new SLK consists of pivoting, transparent perspex sections attached to the reverse of the roll-over bars. The driver or passenger can pivot them to the centre of the vehicle in a flash, thus taming turbulent air flow. When not required, they disappear almost invisibly behind the roll-over bars. The multifunction sports steering wheel has a flat base and thick leather trim

standard. A sports suspension with harder springs and dampers ensures a systematically sporty driving experience, and as an alternative, a Dynamic Handling package is available. This includes an electronically controlled, fully automatic damping system giving the vehicle excellent suspension comfort even on poor road surfaces, but still offering high driving dynamics. Also included in the Dynamic Handling package are a Direct-Steer system and the Torque Vectoring Brakes developed by Mercedes-Benz. The Direct-Steer system offers more handling and agility than the standard steering, and reduces the amount of physical effort required when parking. In critical conditions the Torque Vectoring Brakes produce a stabilisation of the SLK without any compromises where dynamism is concerned, giving precise steering and full control. Open house Most of us have dreamt, at some stage, of having a personal chef. Someone who has the best contacts for the freshest of prime materials, chooses the best on offer each day and then prepares it exactly how you want it. That dream is now an affordable reality at La Náutica in El Médano. The new owner of this well known venue, Toribio, has a lot of experience in this field and has come up with an exciting concept – fresh food prepared to order, the way you like it best. The restaurant is a delight standing out from the rest for its cleanliness, its marine themed royal blue and white interior and its spacious terrace (right next to a children’s playground) with spectacular views of Montaña Roja, the beach and the kite and wind surfers. The menu is a mere guide. What’s important are the fridges and display cabinets inside and the information your friendly multilingual waiter can share with you. Whether you want a full meal, a snack or tapas, this restaurant can cater for you. They offer a full range of starters including whitebait, fresh battered fish fingers and the Canarian speciality gofio escaldado from just €2.50. Soups and salads start at €3.50. On the day of our visit they had camerones – soft shell shrimp – which had come straight from a local fisherman’s boat into the kitchens here. These can be salty or over-boiled, but not here, they were cooked to perfection, full of flavour and they went down a treat with a glass of white wine as we chatted to

the chef about the options available. They deal with local fishermen from El Tejado right through to Alcalá so the fish menu depends on what the sea delivers that morning. Explaining the menu, the chef told us, “why should I go to the market and buy hake that might be a bit ropey just because I have hake on the menu. I will buy the best of what’s on offer, if the monkfish is the best I will buy the monkfish.” Fresh fish is charged by weight and type and the restaurant also offers cazuelas of fish (casseroles) and real paella, full of chunks of fish and shellfish. Meat dishes are also on offer from €7.90 with an excellent selection of top cuts of beef, chicken or whatever you like. If you fancy a T-bone, order it, and the best T-bone the market has to offer will be bought in especially for you, or perhaps your choice is suckling pig or roast lamb, the same applies. Any cut can be obtained for you and will be prepared for you as you want when you arrive. They also have Spanish style snails and typical Canarian goat meat stew on the menu, with wrinkled potatoes and their own mojo sauces and speciality dishes such as lobster with rice can also be prepared to order. If you are a gastronome and enjoy typical Spanish dishes such as those made with salted fish, here the chef selects the best fish, the best salt and salts the product himself, including making the typical jareas of the Canaries. You can also order elvers and thick Galician Goose barnacles – anything your heart desires. They have an excellent supplier and can fulfil your every whim. The wine list offers a selection from the famous Torres bodega, Canarian wines and includes some from Rueda, Rioja, Ribera del Duero and there’s an excellent choice of sparkling wines. At weekends they always buy in larger fish: swordfish, grouper, amberjack etc., whatever the sea has to offer, and however you want it prepared, it will be done. Some dishes may take a little longer obviously but with a free wifi 34

zone and these views and comfort, waiting is a pleasure. Sauces available include red and white wine, Vizcaina, Bilbaina, champagne, hollandaise, béarnaise, garlic (ajoarriera), Galician, green sauce (usually with parsley or coriander), Basque, mustard, Rossini, port, or with the essences of whatever shellfish the restaurant has in stock on the day. To get a good idea of the variety on offer we chose monkfish and fillet steak. The monkfish looked as if it had only just stopped swimming! We asked for the chef’s recommendation of sauces and were not disappointed. The monkfish was filleted, cooked whole and then sliced, dressed with a sauce made from fresh giant red prawns and topped with a selection of prawns. Cooking it whole meant that it maintained its firmness and the sauce combined with and complemented the fish rather than overpowering it, the two flavours mingling exquisitely on the palate. The dish gave the full flavour of the sea and is highly recommended to all those who enjoy fish and shellfish in prime condition. We ended up dunking our bread rolls so as not to waste a drop! may 2011

The fillet steak when it came was an enjoyable surprise - we had again left it to the discretion of the chef. Laid on a bed of onions glazed with red wine, the steak was served with fried sliced potatoes and had been cut into strips before flash frying to retain all the flavour and then woven with some beautiful al dente buttered carrots for presentation and flavour. The garnish was rolls of bacon wrapped in grilled red peppers, the slightly bitter flavour of the peppers combining perfectly with the streaky bacon and contrasting with the slight sweetness of the onions. Simply delicious! We had no room for dessert, (too much bread roll and sauce) but there is an excellent selection including home made mousse, tiramisu and Canarian quesillo starting at just €3.20 and if you like some music with your meal, a Cuban singer/guitar player entertains on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7pm onwards and then on Saturdays from 8pm and Sundays from 4pm a

local ‘parranda’ comes by. This can be anything from two friends to eight, who play and sing typical Canarian and Spanish language songs and get the customers’ feet tapping. Tenerife Bluetrail

The tough got going The very latest of the tough double marathon plus races attracted top athletes to sign up for the Ultratrail in Tenerife recently. At midnight on the night of 15th/16th of April, wearing red plaques with their numbers, 167 runners lined up in Los Cristianos to set off on the 95 km race to La Orotava up and down changes in altitude of over 11,000 metres and through some of the most beautiful and most desolate scenery that the island has to offer. Specialist, Miguel Heras, who had flown over especially for the event from his home in Salamanca, soon opened up an impressive lead and by the time he passed Vilaflor he had already

opened up a 25 minute gap and averaged 14 kph on the uphill stretch. The Ifonche to Vilaflor section was considered very tough indeed by a lot of runners and several dropped out at the station in Vilaflor. By the time they reached the Cañadas del Teide and turned off to continue up and over Montaña Blanca some of the runners had frost on their clothing from the extreme cold and couldn’t stop to put on their gloves as that would have been worse. We saw one runner with frost in his eyebrow! By the time the Trail runners of a ‘mere’ 52 kilometres started at 8am from the Parador in the National Park, it had warmed up a little but not a lot. They had blue plaques on their numbers to distinguish them.

Halftrail runners set forth with green plaques from La Caldera for their 21km run at noon and it was here that the adapted route for the physically challenged was also raced in and around La Caldera. For the Ultratrailers and the Trailers, this section must have been a nightmare, after a long run already and a long downhill stretch they suddenly had to turn uphill again to go up towards Los Organos. The finish line at La Orotava was well supported and each runner cheered in as he or she arrived. All along the route, local police, Guardia Civil, army, Red Cross and even three cars of the Canarian regional police were on hand to

help and support along with a huge number of volunteers. Just over 30 runners from all the categories had to abandon â&#x20AC;&#x201C; a low figure considering the toughness of the test. All the runners, in all categories had special microchips tied into their boots to register automatically when they went through certain checkpoints and to act as location devices should they become lost. On arrival at La Orotava the runners were bussed to a local sports centre where they picked up their belongings, showered, and regained strength with the aid of drinks, yoghurts, plĂĄtanos and paella. A group of volunteer physiotherapy students were also on hand with their professor to succour the weary and aching with their skills.

Windsurfing Championship In July, the Professional Windsurfers Association (PWA) World Tour comes to El Médano, a town which is already a windsurfers’ paradise. The Daniel Bruch windsurf club has many enthusiastic members, most of whom are resident in the town. Daniel Bruch and his friend José Manuel have organised this year’s event which promises to bring lots of sport, entertainment and fun to the area, and hence many very welcome visitors. Daniel is a professional windsurfer who first began surfing at the age of 13. Two years later, he began to windsurf with a friend and since then he hasn’t been able to stop. He began competing at the age of 17. Three years later, he took a break during which time he worked in his father’s TV and satellite business. Five years on, he decided that fitting TV aerials and the like was not what he really wanted out of life, and besides, he only had time to windsurf at the weekends. A change was needed. First he opened a business with his girlfriend, but later on decided to concentrate on the sport and training. He had an ambition – to be one of the top 10 windsurfers. His persistence paid off as two years later he reached the 7th position, in the third year 11th and last year he reached number 5. He told The Magazine, “for everything I’ve done, I’ve seen a reward”. This has required much investment and time, as at the age of 25, backers are hard to find. Having achieved this much, and been one of the top five, he still says he will carry on fighting until he reaches the top. He has travelled far and wide and seen many windsurfing

venues, which made him wonder why we don’t have a PWA Tour event in El Médano. The conditions couldn’t be better, with so many windy days, especially in the summer, not to mention the wonderful surroundings. He commented, “usually it’s either one or the other – weather or surroundings”, but El Médano has it all, especially during July and August. He says, “it has been 15 years since we had this event in El Médano and I’ve been pushing to get it back. That last El Médano event in 1996 was the first PWA event I entered”. He told us that he tried for three years running to get it back, and for various reasons including the economic crisis, it wasn’t until the third try that he struck lucky. We asked Daniel (pictured right) what was involved in organising this event. First of all, he told us that funding, or sponsorship, had to be gained, and this year’s main sponsors are the Ayuntamiento de Granadilla, the Tenerife Cabildo and the Canarian Government. He says that the PWA asks for many things which you have to provide, and then of course the event has to be publicised, in the press, on TV and radio. Daniel is still seeking more sponsors, as he says that they only have the minimum at the moment and the PWA Tour is costly to bring to Tenerife. The 2011 event will not only be a sporting one, it will be more of a festival with entertainment both night and

day, lots of shops and brands participating, stands on the beach with food and clothing, a party tent and a possible skating competition or exhibition. There will also be a car exhibition and the highlight (and a big attraction) will be the raffle organised by the local businesses association in which you could win a car. 48 men and 16 women from all over the world will be competing during the week, including a good number of Canarians. Others will be coming from Brazil, the US, Spain, Germany, France, Italy, the UK, Ireland, Japan, Venezuela and more. During the event, Daniel says he will take off his organiser’s vest and compete at his home spot in El Médano (he’s going for the top!). Some events have yet to be confirmed, as there has been a high level of interest with many ideas coming forward. We will publish more information in our next issue.
