40, El Musical This musical consisting of Spanish pop music from the top 40 is returning to the Tenerife Auditorium Adán Martín in Santa Cruz from July 6th to 10th. 40, El Musical is based on the popular radio station, Los 40 Principales, and will use the same stage set as used in Barcelona with two former Operación Triunfo contestants taking part: Naím Thomas from Tenerife and Gisela from Cataluña. Houses and patios open so that you can see how life really was for villagers of all ages, and so that you leave Chirche with a wonderful taste in your mouth, there are usually samples of traditional food in the plaza, which will make you want to return again and again.

11th Traditions Day in Chirche Once a year since the beginning of the 21st century, the charming olde-worlde village of Chirche in the district of Guía de Isora becomes a living museum for a day, and this year it all takes place on July 10th. The village residents, all dressed appropriately, celebrate this fiesta by faithfully recreating the customs and everyday activities of this rural area

of the island, the statue of the Virgin, together with that of San Telmo, are taken by the local people from their hermitages down to the small beach at the fishing port. This procession has become extremely popular as the residents share their excitement with holidaymakers. On arrival at the beach, and after the setting free of several doves, the fishermen take charge of the statues to place them on decorated fishing boats for a trip around the harbour, to the sound of much music and horns. The fiesta ends with a grand firework display before the statues are returned to the sanctity of their hermitage.

Santa Cruz celebrates Nelson battle Adeje Bargain Fair The IV Adeje Bargain Fair is taking place in the town on July 9th and 10th and if previous editions are anything to go by there will be no problem finding excellent prices for a huge selection of goods, clothes and shoes, toys and lots more besides. The two-day event will be on the Calles Palo Mayor and Las Jarcias, in El Galeón, Adeje, from 10am to 9pm on both days.

Between the 23rd and 25th July, Tenerife’s capital remembers one of the most significant battles of its history, against Admiral Horatio Nelson’s troops as they attacked the City. The spectacular recreation of this battle, which took place on July 25th 1797 creates lots of smoke and canonfire, both on land and at sea, and the fantastic costumes complete the picture, which attracts thousands of visitors to Santa Cruz.

Fiestas del Carmen Although the fiestas in honour of la Virgen del Carmen, the patron of the fishermen, are celebrated in many parts of Tenerife, the best known location for this festival is Puerto de la Cruz. Each year in this holiday resort in the north

Antonio Tavio Memorial Tournament

Following the success of his last visit to Tenerife, Juanes has chosen the island to close his current tour of Spain to present his latest album P.A.R.C.E. As well as a selection of his greatest hits throughout his career, which include La Camisa Negra, Volverte a Ver, A Dios le Pido and Me Enamora. This great Columbian singer, songwriter and arranger of Spanish pop and rock will be performing at the Adeje Football Stadium on July 30th.

On Wednesday 6th July, Amarilla Golf Members Club is staging a memorial competition to honour founding its president, Antonio Tavio Pena, who sadly passed away on 6th July 2010. The format of the competition will be a four-man Texas Scramble with a Shotgun Start at 9.30am. This will be followed by a barbecue and prize giving. There will be prizes for the winning members team and for the winning visitors team. The entrance cost of €50 includes golf, buggy, barbecue and refreshments. PWA Windsurfing Championship 2011 The place to be for windsurfers and those who love watching this exhilarating sport is El Médano, between July 14th and 20th. The PWA Windsurfing Championship is returning to Tenerife after 15 years with a new name and this year’s event will not only be a sporting one where you can see the best windsurfers in the world, but more of a festival with entertainment both night and day, lots of shops and brands participating, beach stands with

food and clothing, a party tent and lots more. There will also be a car exhibition and the highlight (and a big attraction) will be the raffle organised by the local businesses association in which you could win a Renault Clio Authentic. 48 men and 16 women from all over the world will be competing, including several Canarians. Others are coming from Brazil, the US, Spain, Germany, France, Italy, the UK, Ireland, Japan, Venezuela and more. One of the organisers of the event, Daniel Bruch, currently fifth in the PWA ranking,

is competing ‘at home’ and hoping to get the best result this year. Arona estĂĄ de moda That was the name of the event which took place in Los Cristianos over six days in early June. There were several aspects to the initiative, designed to increase trade for town centre businesses. 54 of these establishments were offering star products at discounted prices, a dozen bars, cafĂŠs and restaurants were offering a tapa and a drink for â&#x201A;Ź3, and 33 fashion shops displayed their goods on the catwalk at the fashion shows, which took place over two evenings on the seafront promenade. This was the chance to see that high quality casual, sports or formal clothing, jewellery and accessories can be found without leaving Los Cristianos, for children and adults of all sizes and ages.

Paying homage to the Master

Back to the future! The municipal and regional elections on May 22nd saw political upheavals in many parts of Spain and here in the Canary Islands. While electorates in some boroughs voted to return ruling parties with absolute majorities, such as in the case of Adeje, Guía de Isora and Arona, in other parts of the islands pacts were the order of the day. In many cases those pacts saw familiar faces return to positions of power. In Santiago del Teide for instance, and in the Tenerife Cabildo, where the very popular Ricardo Melchior of the Coalición Canarias has been re-elected as president, this time with the help of the PSOE socialist party.

Centro HĂpico del Sur The Centro HĂpico del Sur near Buzanada in the district of Arona provides the perfect environment for horses and their riders, with staff who are totally in love with these beautiful animals. On the weekend of June 11th and 12th, visiting riders and their horses came from afar, including the other Canary Islands, to take part in the Concurso Doma ClĂĄsica Nacional (national dressage contest) with events for teams and individuals, for infants, juveniles and adults. It was a particularly elegant event which benefitted from beautiful weather. Some of the winners are pictured here.

The Janet Whitehouse Memorial Trophy Additionally on June 12th, riders were competing for the 1st Janet Whitehouse Memorial Trophy. A member of the British Horse Society, Jan, who passed away in February 2009, acted as a consultant trainer in dressage during her time in the Canaries and helped so many to achieve their goals. She trained some riders at Buzanada on a personal level, including Charlie Karlsen (Operaci贸n Triunfo) on the horse Opus 2000. Ken and Kate Matthews sponsored the cash prizes for the winners, and the trophy itself consists of the spurs which Jan wore as a rider for about 40 years. An independent outside jury chose Opus 2000 and his rider Paris as the winning combination out of 20 horses. Second came Paula on Jalouzie and third was Ailsa on Emiel. At an emotional presentation, Charlie Karlsen made a short speech and awarded the trophy and prizes to the winners.

Ouzing flavour After hearing several glowing reports on the food served in Taverna El Greco, it was with more than a little anticipation that I headed to the after-dark Mecca of Centro Comercial Safari in Las Américas to check it out for myself. Should the name El Greco leave any doubt as to the type of food offered, the whopping Greek flag on the wall inside makes it clear, and the Zorba-esque music seals the deal -minus the hourly break for the musical fountain extravaganza, a nice companion in itself to outdoor dining. The extensive menu has something to suit everyone, but stands out mainly for its simplicity. Good quality ingredients, packed with flavour, cooked simply but to perfection with an abundance of herbs and spices. Every plate that passed on its way to hungry customers was colourful, neatly presented and generously portioned. To start with you have a range of options, such as hummous with flat bread straight from the oven and stuffed vine leaves. But if

you’re uncertain what to go for and want to sample a range of Greek delicacies, opt for Pikilia El Greco (€9,95) – a selection of eight delicious dishes including tzatziki, hummous, marinated olives, beetroot, butter beans in tomato sauce, green-lipped mussels and a divine creamy feta spread with chilli. Watch the bread intake though, it is incredibly easy to wolf your way through two baskets almost without registering (especially as they bring a new one when they see you have none left) and suddenly find you are almost full. This would be a tragedy indeed, as the main courses are out of this world. Meat lovers are spoilt for choice: the quintessentially Greek kebab, Souvlaki, be it chicken, pork, beef or a mixture of all three, is a winner every time. You can also choose from prime cuts of steak, chicken or the traditional favourite, Mousaka. There are also plenty of fish dishes to choose from, the best of which just take the fresh fish of the day or tiger prawns and cook them to perfection on the barbecue. gem of the whole menu. Its translation of beefburger doesn’t do it justice at all. Think less ‘slab of average meat in a bun with a slice of tomato’ and more ‘two-inch-thick burger of top-quality beef, bursting with herbs, served with a lip-smackingly thick provençale sauce and feta cheese oozing from its core’. Divine. There is a selection of salads available, but you can’t go wrong with the classic Horiatiki (€6,95) – peppers, red onion, olives, cucumber, tomato and the best feta you’re ever likely to eat (not too salty, not too crumbly), dressed to impress with olive oil, vinegar and fresh herbs. If you have room for dessert (and I take my

hat off if you do), there are a few houseprepared options that will not disappoint. Baklava, the tooth-achingly sweet filo pastry bites, covered with pistachios and other nuts and lashings of honey go down very nicely with an after-dinner coffee. Chocoholics needn’t worry, either – the warm brownie, served with vanilla ice cream is very tasty and surprisingly light. The service is warm, friendly and efficient, the atmosphere is spot on and the food first class. Prices for starters average around €6, mains around €13 and desserts around €4. Hope and help Speaking to Maria del Carmen Bonfante about Ámate, the Tenerife association for women with breast cancer, is to speak to a woman fired with enthusiasm and 100 per cent convinced she is on the right track. A breast cancer survivor herself, Mari Carmen is President of the association that she and a group of fellow patients formed some five years ago. “We were like a self help group, we used to get together in the café after our appointments and discuss everything that was needed and not at that time available, a social worker, psychiatrist, lymphatic drainage massage. There was only one psychologist for the whole hospital, there were no resources for women to help them get a wig if they didn’t have any money, there were no workshops and no physiotherapists available when your arm hurt. So we came up with the idea of the association as a long-term project. “We started with the psychologist, to be able to offer help to the patients and their families”, they were involved in the creation of books, for example, which help the parents explain to young children what is happening and help them to accept it. The next step was a social worker. Often women who are affected by breast cancer lose their jobs. If they are working in the service industry and they have to have lymph nodes removed, the resulting swelling means that it is just too painful to 38

move beds or carry trays. The financial results for the families can be crippling: “of the women who are in treatment for a year, nearly all end up out of work.” So the association organises training for them in other fields, help with curriculums and preparation for interviews. “There was a waiting list at the hospital of a minimum of two years for physiotherapy, and we had to do something about that, by whatever means. When they remove your breast your body is left lopsided, which leads to problems with your back and shoulder as well as the swelling in the arm. Plus which the scar has to be drained to stop it accumulating fat.” The physio is now working with patients all over the island: in the south, in Icod de los Vinos, in La Orotava. Mari Carmen underlines the necessity of going to a properly trained physio for the lymphatic drainage. “This is not a beauty treatment, lymphatic drainage massage after breast cancer treatment is a specialised treatment that requires a two-year training course.” The team has recently also visited El Hierro to help patients there and is planning a trip to La Palma and La Gomera. Wherever they travel to, they need a local council or association to offer them premises for a couple of days and accommodation. kindly gives them free tickets. As breast cancer survivors, the group members themselves have kept an eye on what is needed and the association has grown bit by bit. For women who can’t afford prostheses or wigs, they can get them from Ámate. To keep the patients mentally and physically fit, they offer various workshops and keep fit classes, such as Pilates, belly dancing, finger pressure acupuncture, Reiki, Bach flower remedies, excursions, dance therapy and laughter therapy. Courses available now include computer studies and handicrafts with recycled items. All events staged to raise money get support from the volunteers at Ámate, but perhaps Mari Carmen’s favourite is the fashion catwalk they organise, in lingerie, swimwear and evening dress. To see women who could have been psychologically destroyed by this disease strutting their stuff, kissing friends and family and waving to the crowd as they display the clothes is a joy. “It’s a message of hope to say that you can live after this and that you can look gorgeous... Ideally they’d like staffed premises in Santa Cruz, Los Cristianos or Adeje and Puerto de la Cruz and accommodation near the hospitals for those who have to travel a long distance for chemo. “We’ll get there, we’ve grown a lot” Mari Carmen states optimistically. Long-term aims? To have a recovery centre for women who have just finished chemo, like the one in Extremadura, with all their treatments and support available. El Médano is being investigated as a possible site for the centre, but it would take a lot more cash than they have available at the moment. “We continue to move forward with a lot of energy and have many dreams and objectives to fulfill, but I’m very happy, we’ve done a lot and come a long way.” Any and all fund-raising activities are very welcome, from all sectors of the public, 40

especially now that many of the big supporters, administrators, banks etc. are cutting back on their charity contributions. Ámate have various items made up for sale to raise funds from t-shirts and car stickers to bracelets and also sell the special scarves which give 100 per cent protection from the sun. Golf events, charity lunches, sponsored walks, sponsored slims, sponsored no-uniform days, tapas and wine tastings, catwalk fashion shows and the Walk for Life have all played their part in raising cash in the past. Some of the most significant guests from the food and beverage industry enjoyed Aperol and Aperol Spritz. They all loved it! Aperol is the perfect aperitif. A glance at the Canarian state flag is enough to show the importance of the Dogo Canario in the islands. Modern in zoo-technical aspects, the Dogo Canario, formally known as the Presa Canario is ancient in its form and origin. The first reference to these animals is in the papers of the Tenerife island council from 1516, shortly after the Spanish conquest. There are numerous references to these canines in the 16th and 17th centuries in official paperwork, mainly referring to their work as guardians and cow herders, which leads one to believe they were strong, robust, but at the same time agile. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s undoubtedly the prototype of the Presa EspaĂąol introduced by the conquerors and derived from the Dogo de Burgos, the Perro de Toro de Salamanca and the Alanos. At the end of the 17th century and into the beginning of the 18th century, the English began to settle in the Canaries, mainly in Tenerife and Gran Canaria, for commercial reasons. They brought with them their culture, customs and their dogs, amongst which the most outstanding were the Mastiff, the Bulldog and the Bull Terrier â&#x20AC;&#x201C; at that time all fighting dogs. It was a period 42

when dog fighting was at its peak in popularity in the UK and they introduced the â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;sportâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; into the Canaries. So much so that breeders here began to cross the Presa EspaĂąol and the Bardino or Pastor Majorero with the more temperamental English breeds, resulting in a dog that was perfectly capable of guarding, herding cows and fighting.

This was the golden age of the Presa Canario until the middle of the 20th century when in 1936, at the end of the Civil War, dog fighting was abolished. Over the years breeding was reduced to such an extent that they almost became extinct, but interest was revived in the 70s, and breeding started again, mainly from small breeding groups in Tenerife and Gran 43

Canaria. In 1987 the Spanish commission for dog breeds gathered data to publish the official racial pattern of the breed which was standardised and approved in 1989. In 2001, the breed was accepted by the FĂŠdĂŠration Cynologique Internationale (FCI), an international federation of kennel clubs, but in exchange they lost their

Tenerife Ladies Match-Play Champion Becky Brewerton fired a four under par 68 in the strokeplay format at the Tenerife Ladies Match Play on Sunday 12th June, earning a one shot victory at Golf Las Américas. The 28-year-old from Abergele in North Wales played superb golf to hold off the challenge of Australian Nikki Garrett and Spain’s rising star Carlota Ciganda, who shared second on her professional debut. It was Brewerton’s third victory as a professional following wins at the 2007 English Open and the 2009 Spanish Open. She had previously finished second three times in Tenerife, including once on the same golf course as an amateur in 2003.

She had secured the most comprehensive victory of the opening day on Friday 10th, when she defeated Australian Kristie Smith 8 and 6 in the matchplay format. She then ousted 79-time tournament champion Laura Davies in the second round of matchplay on Saturday 11th with a birdie on the 19th hole. As one of the last eight players in the event, Brewerton went into the final round full of confidence and earned the early advantage with birdies on the second, fifth and seventh holes. At the seventh, she hit a rescue club from 210 yards to set up an eagle chance, but just missed from 12 feet. At the par-five ninth, she dropped a shot after missing the green with her second shot, but hit the turn one ahead at two under par. She holed a bunker shot for birdie from the right side of the 10th green, then, after finding sand again on 11, she dropped a shot but quickly recovered, sinking a seven-footer on the par-three 13th. There was a ‘hairy moment’ on 14 when her tee shot came to rest behind some palm trees resulting in a second shot which flew the green, but she played an excellent chip to five feet and holed the putt for par. She dropped a shot at the 15th, but two-putted for birdie from 35 feet at the next. After signing off with a birdie on 18,

there was a tense wait by the clubhouse with both Ciganda and Garrett able to tie with a birdie. However Ciganda’s second shot found water and Garrett missed a 15 foot birdie putt, allowing Brewerton to claim the €40,000 first prize. Brewerton hopes that the win will kick-start her season, as she has recently recovered from a foot injury, which started in Portugal. She said: “This is the main start of the season coming up with some massive tournaments. I’m absolutely desperate to make The Solheim team so I’ve just got to try and make as many points as possible.” Although Solheim Cup points were not awarded, her performance will certainly have caught the eye of European Captain Alison Nicholas, who will be making notes for her team selection ahead of the big matchplay event at Killeen Castle in Ireland from September 23rd-25th.
