Our cover this issue is the lovely Candy Dulfer, one of the artists highlighted in our new series of music reviews with Qfm which is launched this month and looks set to be an interesting and exciting addition. Continuing in the musical vein, the Tenerife Opera Festival opens in the middle of the month with Salomé. This one-act opera, based on the French play by Oscar Wilde, is considered to be the most daring of the works created by Richard Strauss. Full of eroticism and sexuality, the opera has dramatic scenes which are hard to equal in the repertory. The premiere in 1905 caused a scandal because of the Dance of the Seven Veils scene, but these days it is better known for its gory finale. The Tenerife Opera Festival is recognised for staging major productions to an international standard. A must for opera buffs. Rosario Flores, youngest daughter of Spanish acting and flamenco icon, Lola Flores, also visits the island this month with a concert in Santa Cruz mid-month. She is perhaps better known to non-Spanish readers as the female bull fighter in Pedro Almodovar’s Talk to her which took a fistful of awards including an Oscar for the best original screenplay and two Baftas for best foreign language film and best original screenplay. However Rosario is also a talented and popular musician specialising in a pop and flamenco style and has been awarded the Latin Grammy twice so far. The annual Pinolere fair makes September a red-letter month for crafts fans and a great place to pick up traditional and modern hand-made items for home and hearth, fashion, treats, buy ahead Christmas gifts or great souvenirs. The kids go back to school, but we can all still enjoy a great day out in the sun. Check out our suggestions for fun above and below the waves and enjoy to the full the remains of the summer weather and light nights.

XXIV Craft Fair Pinolere 2009 Parque Etnográfico Pinolere near La Orotava, september 4 – 6

This year‘s craft fair unites master basket makers, craftsmen and women from all the Canary Islands at the Parque Etnográfico Pinolere near La Orotava between the 4th and 6th September and is based on all

articles made with straw. At this, one of the biggest fairs in the Canaries, you can also see typical Canarian instruments, pottery, ceramics, jewellery, textiles, cigars, traditional costumes, paintings, tools, foodstuffs and more, and it provides the ultimate opportunity to watch the items being made, to purchase something special and try some traditional Canarian food and wine. There will also be workshops aimed at both adults and children where the public are invited to participate and to learn techniques. Last

year, 190 craftspeople took part and more than 32,000 visitors went through the gates. The fair, which makes a really enjoyable cultural day out, is open from 10am to 9pm on each of the three days, and there are usually buses running from La Orotava.

Tenerife Opera Festival 2009 Auditorio de Tenerife, Santa Cruz

Tickets are on sale now for all events, priced at 55, 40, 30 and 20 euros for all the operas, 30 and 20 euros for the Rossini recital and 15 euros for the Martin i Soler recital. You can buy a season ticket (bono) to cover all the performances (except the Martin i Soler recital) giving a discount of 25 per cent,

from the box offices at the Auditorio de Tenerife or the Teatro Leal in La Laguna and there will be a draw for those who buy season tickets, with five money-back prizes. The festival begins with the first of six operas: Salome by Richard Strauss, produced by Pier Luigi Pizzi for the Teatro Reggio Emilia and directed by Lü Jia who conducts the Tenerife Symphony Orchestra. These performances take place on September 17th and 19th at 8.30pm in the Auditorio de Tenerife, Santa Cruz.

Intense pulsed light

Intense pulsed light (IPL), most commonly employed by medical practitioners and aesthicians is a method of photorejuvenation and of hair removal from both the face and body. The Intense Pulsed Light hair removal process has become very popular due to its less expensive and faster procedure compared to laser hair removal. The focused, broad-spectrum light is applied to the surface of the skin by way of a hand-held wand or, depending on the device,

Dermatological Complete Sunblock Specifically formulated to protect delicate and sensitive skins from solar radiation. Full spectrum SPF protection from UVA and UVB rays combined with an effective skin moisturising agent, antioxidants and depigmentation ingredients, thus preventing premature photo ageing. A compulsory complement to depigmenting treatments. Ideal photoprotector for use after peels, laser, microdermabrasions and other aggressive procedures. Its ingredients combine a careful selection of physical and organic anti UVA and anti UVB filters together with cosmetic ingredients made up of skin hydrating, antioxidant and pigmentation reducers.

an articulated arm. This light travels through the skin until it strikes the hair shaft or the bulb of the hair. The bulb is usually where the highest concentration of melanin is located. As the light is converted to heat energy, the bulb and most of the hair shaft are instantly vaporised. The intense heat radiated by the hair also destroys the hair-producing papilla or the entire hair follicle. The pulses of light produced by IPL equipment are very short in duration, so discomfort and damage to nontarget tissues is minor. Most people who undergo IPL epilation generally only experience slight irritation similar to that of a minor sunburn, if any at all. Men undergoing the procedure experience greater discomfort as male body hair is generally thicker than women’s. Depending on the instrument settings and intensity, treating sensitive areas such as the chest and face can result in pain comparable to waxing the same areas; however this pain dissipates immediately. The light that emanates from the IPL wand is filtered to remove any ultraviolet components, eliminating the possibility of UV skin damage.

IPL technology is also employed in the treatment of skin disorders including: n Sun damage induced dyspigmenta-

tion, age/brown spots and vascular changes n Acne Rosacea n Broken capillaries/telangiectases n Vascular and flat pigmented birth marks n Enlarged pores and fine wrinkles (IPL stimulates collagen production giving your skin a rejuvenated look and feel through a painless process without the need for surgery)

IPLs work more directly on the top layers of the skin and do not penetrate deep enough to damage hair germ cells, without potential damage to the epidermis.

Personalise your Feng Shui by Roger Keller

In one of the previous editions of The Magazine I wrote about general Feng Shui rules. While these rules apply to nearly every situation, there are some factors which are more personal. Colours for instance are a typical personal thing. So, how can we determine what is good and what is bad for us? If you would like to improve your personal Feng Shui, you need to follow your intuition. A Feng Shui consultant has many tools to hand with which to calculate your personal constellation and can use this valuable information to improve your personal environment. Unfortunately it is not so easy to make these calculations and it needs years of studying classical Feng Shui to become a good consultant. So, all I can offer in this article is a great deal of common sense and intuition.

Colours Colours are one of the most important decoration tools in our modern lives - they are every-

where and the world has never been as colourful as it is today. In ancient times the colours were much more limited than today and there were only a few possibilities to choose from. The Chinese categorised the colours to the five elements and used them to balance a person’s elements circle, for example, somebody with a weak metal element is advised to use white, grey and silver colours to strengthen this particular element. This explains why we have different

favourite colours, because every personal element cycle is unique. During our lifespan our tastes change and so do our favourite colours. With a personal constellation to hand, it is quite easy to pick the right colour for a person. But our intuition is also a great tool for making the right choice. Young children especially know exactly what colours they like. Once we had a mother on one of our Feng Shui courses. She attended seven weekend seminars throughout a year and after the first weekend she decided to paint her son’s room blue. The next class came and she got more information and off she went painting her son’s room white. After the last session she was so confused that she finally asked us to come around and see her house (we always recommend students not to change anything before the end of the course, but...). When we did her son’s constellation, it turned out that his earth element was quite weak. Her face went pale and all she could say was, “now I know why he is always sitting on his yellow blanket”. Yellow is an earth colour and he picked the only spot with his favourite colour. This little story teaches us to make more use of our intuition. The more grown-up we are, the more disconnected we become with our inner counsellor. That is why we need tools like Feng Shui to get back to our personal needs.

the magazine

Forms Shapes and forms are another big topic in Feng Shui. Do you like to live in a square shaped house or do you prefer a modern architectural home? You have probably had the experience of visiting someone’s house and knowing right from the beginning that you couldn’t live there, while on the other hand, the owners are quite happy with their surroundings. Again our intuition tells us which environment is good for us and which should be avoided. Forms and shapes are also connected to the five elements. Have a look at the table Elements, forms and shapes, for a brief overview of the five elements’ attributes.

Discover your personal constellation As mentioned before, it needs some study and experience to maintain a personal constellation. To make it a bit easier, I put together this little test to get you started. A more complex interactive version is available on our website: www.5elementos.com

lifestyle

Feng Shui Test Wood element I am very confident about my abilities and do what I think I should do, no matter what others think about me If something does not develop as I would want it, I can react with fury or withdraw offended. I am a creative person I can hardly control my emotions in stressful situations I take guidance easily and with pleasure and / or reach my top form under pressure I act courageously and am decisive, even if I do not have all the information I need to hand

Fire element I am a very lively person and an incorrigible optimist I empathise with people well and I enjoy body contact and emotional intimacy I try very much to handle other people with honesty and openness I frequently feel hectic, nervous or restless I am sometimes scatterbrained and absent minded People see me as a charismatic person and are attracted to me

Earth element I worry too much and about everything, and tend to bury myself in problems I need stability in my life. I only feel good in peaceful situations and quiet surroundings I give a lot of strength to other people and love to feel needed I tend to deal too much with other people’s problems instead of taking care of my own It is quite difficult for me to ask for something that I need and I often feel ignored The contact with my family and my friends is enough for me

Metal element I always try to keep my life in order; I am a neat and tidy person I am a good organiser and a well structured person I incline towards perfectionism and can be very self-critical I often feel sad and depressed and can be pessimistic I do not allow myself to show my feelings and emotions I love to solve problems with the help of logic and analytics

Water element I have a strong will and stand up for myself and my beliefs My typical reaction to difficult situations is fear. I tend to always assume the worst scenario I am patient and persevering, even if I am not always lucky I like to get to the bottom of things to find out what I want to know. I do not like to accept pre-determined solutions I tend to be sceptical or even cynical I tend to be introverted and would rather keep my thoughts to myself

You can use colours and shapes to strengthen a weak element

How to read your test results Sum up the points for each element. If an element has 0-5 points it seems to be too weak. 6-10 points represent a balanced element and more than 11 points indicate a very strong (maybe too strong) element. If an element is too weak you can strengthen it by using colours and shapes from that particular element. A strong element needs a bit more thought. If the following element is rather weak (for example, strong fire

the magazine

and weak earth) you should strengthen the earth element to get the fire element flowing. There are many other situations and cures for balancing out your personal five element cycle. It would be too complicated to name them all in one article. If you are a healthy person there is no harm in trying out some some things without a making a deep analysis of your personal constellation. But I really recommend professional help if you suffer from health problems.

Xena Fox is well known for the infinite details she includes in her realism works, though actually one of Xena’s particular skills is her versatility. Undertaking private commissions she has turned her hand to various styles including abstract,

sculpture and expressionism. She has given five exhibitions, two of which were in England. The first of these, in Brighton, was in conjunction with the famous wildlife author Steven Savage to raise funds for the East Sussex Seawatch Foundation. Xena was then specially invited to exhibit at the Arundel Nature

This talented local artist also regularly undertakes commercial art projects and can provide the perfect combination of art and sign-writing for those wanting quality publicity. Murals and pet portraits are also a popular choice. Xena is available for commissions by calling: 922 862614 or 616597010.

Submarine Safari

The adventure of a lifetime by Clio O’Flynn

My apprentice, aged four, armed with her SpongeBob SquarePants annual and the words of Yellow Submarine, is ready to dive. We are in the very pleasant San Miguel marina, a growing concern in this delightful corner of South Tenerife, on a hot summer afternoon. The yellow submarine, run by Submarine Safari, is docked off the marina, beside the shop and office (which also boasts an upstairs shaded bar).

26

We enter the very spacious and air conditioned sub, posing first for a top-deck photograph, with places for up to 44 passengers, each facing a large window, so every seat is a ‘good’ seat. Before we know it we are on the underwater trip of a lifetime. Our guide Darren first directs our attention to a safety video (similar to an aircraft, it’s good to know what to do if..). However as we are not in a pressurised cabin there are few restrictions on who can travel – passengers must be over two

years old and a minimum level of mobility is required (to be able to tackle the steps) - and unlike a scuba dive, there are no restrictions on flights after this immersion. As we move out of the port into the sea the underwater residents swim by, some ignoring the odd shaped tube moving through their waters, some more curious. There’s a camera on top of the sub feeding live images to the small TV monitors in front of each seat. Darren tells us the names of the fish we are seeing – parrot fish, barracudas, damsel fish, trumpet fish, even a shoal of grunt fish and what’s nice is that he doesn’t talk

too much, as people are happy to watch and chat among themselves. Visibility is good and as we’re beneath the waves there’s no danger of seasickness. Even though, in a sense, we’re the ones in the goldfish bowl, it feels perfectly natural to be almost sitting on the seabed. Now we approach one or two boat wrecks, and suddenly diver Debbie appears, swimming with the stingrays, which seem totally at ease with her, following her around the submarine as she feeds and plays with them, giving us the odd wave as she swims by. On the way home, given the excellent viewing windows along both sides, everyone gets a chance to see the side of the ocean they missed on the way out. As we approach the port once again, the strains of Yellow Submarine waft through the cabin, and voices young and old are happy to join in “....Sky of blue and sea of green, in our yellow submarine, all together now....” The custom built submarine is spacious and airy with no sense of being cramped, one of only 15 large commercial submarines in the world. There are up to eight one-hour dives a day, Monday to Saturday, and trips can be booked directly through the office, open daily from 9am to 7pm, 922 736629. There are free coach transfers from various zones in the south and south west of the island and several day trips from the north. Group bookings (with discounts) are also available, ask for details when booking.

Marine Fun Exciting, exhilarating, educational and fun – these are just some ways of describing this excursion which really lives up to its name. Using inflatable launches, this wonderful adventure leaves Los Gigantes and takes you alongside the cliffs, the stunning rocky Masca coastline and on to the Punta de Teno lighthouse, clinging to the coast and popping in and out of caves on the way. Timing is flexible, as is the size of your party. Two people can travel in one launch, which allows for you and a guide. Two companions could travel together in the second launch, and if needed, a guide would travel in the third launch with an

additional party member. Boats two and three would follow the leader. During the trip you will have the opportunity to take the wheel yourself and really feel part of this excursion. Stops are included so that you can take pictures or dive in for a swim (in the caves as well). Although jumping in is not obligatory, wetsuits and lifejackets are provided for your safety. You could just relax and admire the beautiful scenery – clear turquoise water, 600 metre high jagged rocks with multi-coloured layers, the local flora and fauna, and you may even be lucky enough to see flying fish, dolphins, baby barracudas or other inhabitants jumping out of the sea to greet you. It’s pure unadulterated fun which

The new E-Class Coupé offers a very special combination of fascination and efficiency. Its classic coupé side aspect with no B-pillars and fully retractable side windows give it a particularly sporty look with a definite Wow! factor. Despite traditional Mercedes-Benz styling elements, the Coupé has its own, distinct identity. It is also the world’s most aerodynamically efficient series-production car. Its standard-fit Agility Control suspension adjusts automatically to any driving situation, combining driving pleasure and excellent handling with maximum comfort. The newly developed luxury automatic climate control system regulates the temperature, volume and distribution of air in three zones to meet the requirements of the driver, front and rear

passengers in a choice of three modes. For your convenience, all functions of the info-entertainment system are at the fingertips of both the driver and front passenger. The seats are electrically adjustable for height and backrest angle as standard. The high, sporty seat backrests have a practical Easy-Entry function to make access easier for rear-seat passengers. king system are also features with which this new series sets standards. The new diesel and direct-injection petrol engines combine efficiency with a seemingly effortless power delivery, taking the car to top speed in no time at all. The engine line-up includes the E250 CDI Blue Efficiency, which makes the Coupé one of the most economical vehicles in its class. On-demand activation of the steering and fuel pumps, the use of tyres with low rolling resistance and an alternator control system which takes account of the current driving situation as well as

the vehicle’s electrical power requirements, plus outstanding aerodynamics all contribute to this vehicle’s economy. We drove the version with the turbocharged V6 diesel engine with common-rail direct injection. This E350 CDI BlueEfficiency engine develops 231hp and returns an average 41.5 mpg. Pure effortless power. Other versions are the E250 CGI BlueEfficiency with a four-cylinder 204hp direct-injection petrol unit and a five-speed automatic transmission, the E350 CGI BlueEfficiency 292hp petrol engine and the top of the range model,

the E500 Coupé, has a 388hp V8 engine offering the performance characteristics of a sports car. Even this engine returns an average consumption of 25.9 mpg. Charity Golf Tournament

Sporting legends Sign up now for a once in a lifetime experience to try and pit your golf skills against three sporting giants. Former world champions of darts, John Lowe and Eric Bristow, and Willie Morgan, Scotland and Manchester United footballer are all taking part in a charity golf tournament at Amarilla Golf on September 20. The organisers are hoping to gather together at least 18 teams of four players and your team can bid to play with one of the sporting legends. John has been running an annual charity golf tournament in Tenerife since 2005 with the help of the hidden driving force behind the event, John Webster of Summer Days/Summer Nites. This year’s tournament is in support of AMATE, a Tenerife based charity for victims of breast cancer

and their families. The price per player is just 45 euros including the round of golf, a buggy, entry fees to the competition and a barbecue with all the participants in a marquee afterwards. Nonplayers can enjoy the feast with the celebrities for just 10 euros. But the fun doesn’t stop there. In the evening everybody is welcome at Summer Days/Summer Nites from 7pm onwards for an exhibition darts game between the stars and the chance to stand up at the oche with one of them. One of Tenerife’s favourite singers, Morgan, is flying in to entertain us too. There will be raffles and auctions all day and night for top prizes including holidays. This event looks set to be the charity golf event of the year. If you want to be involved as a team or to join us at the barbecue, contact the club on 922 730 319 to book with your credit card.

competition Places are obviously limited so book early to avoid disappointment. Please be aware that if you need to cancel and do not do so at least 48 hours before the event, your card will still be charged with the full amount due. The main sponsors of the event are the Players Golf shop near McDonalds in Las Chafiras and Amarilla Golf Club who have offered a very special rate to the organisers for the event. The cost of sponsoring and putting a stand on a tee starts at just 100 euros (contact Dave Hill on 922 737 288), 15 have already been sold. The same gentleman is in charge of gathering in raffle prizes if you wish to donate a case of wine, a weekend in a hotel, spa treatments etc. Don’t miss the golfing event of the year and it’s all in a good cause!

Rinconcito Garlic chicken has now arrived in Los Abrigos. Not only can you enjoy crispy garlic chicken at the Rinconcito in Los Abrigos as we did, saving a trip to more traditional venues, but also a magnificent carvery on Sundays and a full menu all week except Mondays when the restaurant is closed. The garlic chicken, at only €4.95 for a generous portion, is easily affordable. Crispy on the outside yet moist and tender inside, and served

with Canarian potatoes, mojo sauces and alioli, it is as good as, if not better than any you will find elsewhere on the island. We finished our meal off with a beautifully presented barraquito coffee to die for. Rinconcito is indeed a cosy corner, situated amongst the fish restaurants on the idyllic seafront with views of the small fishing port. There is an additional access by lift for the disabled or those wishing to take advantage of easy parking behind the restaurant. Dave and Donna, with their chef Phil (formerly from La Finquita) also cater well for vegetarians and children, and their drinks prices are more than reasonable. They make every effort to ensure that good food and drinks are easily affordable. It is easy to see why the four course Sunday carvery is already popular. Priced at only €10.95, it runs from 1pm to 9pm. It includes a selection of starters, three succulent roasts plus eight steamed or roasted fresh vegetables and all the trimmings, homemade and freshly cooked, followed by a selection of homemade desserts and a coffee. The children’s carvery for under 12s includes a soft drink and ice cream for €4.95, and of course there is a vegetarian alternative available.

Simple and delicious, this typical Spanish dish is ideal for an easy starter, a tasty snack with a glass of the red stuff or a light supper. Catalonian in origin, it may become the next ‘in’ dish as no less a fashion setter than Victoria Beckham has been spied succumbing to its charms.

Method Toast the bread, rub over the surface with the cut side of the garlic cloves and the cut side of the tomatoes. Top with a dribble of the finest olive oil and Montesano Jamón Serrano and serve.

Candy Dulfer

Funked Up and Chilled Out Tenor saxophonist Hans Dulfer crossed over sacred boundaries. The 1970s Amsterdam jazz scene had no place for a jazz musician who collaborated with punk rock and R&B artists. His pioneering ambitions eventually cost him his famous jazz club, Bimhaus, which was at the time subsidised by a Dutch government who could not accept his visions. But his legacy would live on. In 1975, his six year old daughter picked up his saxophone. By the time she was 14 years of age, Candy had converted to the Tenor Sax, and had her first band, Funky Stuff. Feeling cheated on by the jazz community, she pursued her father’s philosophy. She’d immerse herself into any style of music which captivated her attention, then see where jazz might fit in. Many of us will remember the diminutive figure who accompanied Dave Stewart on Top Of The Pops in 1990 with the top ten hit Lily Was Here. Stewart later co-produced Saxuality, Candy’s first solo album, which effectively silenced the critics who branded Candy a one hit wonder. A talented female jazz musician with incredible sex appeal didn’t 40

fit into any of their boxes, so what they didn’t understand, they ignored. Nine albums later, we’re presented with the sassy double album, Funked Up and Chilled Out which continues to defy the critics and the purist jazz-heads in fine form. The first disc is a collection of twelve Funk, R&B, Reggae and crossover numbers, brassy, edgy and percussive. The fifth track CD 101.9, is a jazz-funk homage to the New York FM station of the same name which broke Candy onto the US market in the early 90s, and features the voice of veteran presenter Russ Davis dubbed from an old cassette recording her father made at the time. Candy’s favourite track, My Funk, features the voice of Pete Philly, one of the most prominent rappers in the Netherlands. Flick to disc two, and we’re in chill-out mode. Ten smooth jazz and ambient compositions. Testament that down-tempo can still be uplifting, this is the CD to coincidentally leave cued up in your sound system whilst off on that date. Or to tenderly wind down to after that manic night out. Qfm’s select tracks: Sunrise, CD 101.9, Cruise Control, Be Cool. september 2009

Mauri Sanchis Groovewords

If we were to state that Mauri Sanchis is one of Spain’s most ‘international’ musicians, it would be said in a complementary tone. Mauri was born in Valencia, 1974, and like many musical innovators, taught himself the disciplines of keyboard with genuine analogue instruments such as the Hammond, Moog, Clavinet, Wurlitzer and Rhodes pianos. Mauri cut his musical teeth in the key of Blues with his first band, Progressions. In 1995, he relocated to the US to study, and learned not only perfect 42

English, but also tuned into the ‘authenticity’ of jazz, blues and funk. In 2003, his debut album Less Is More received critical acclamation throughout Spain and beyond. Three years and numerous tours later, Good Vibes was released, and Mauri was hired by the prestigious German label BHM, the only Spanish artist to ever have achieved this milestone. Groovewords is a melting pot of Jazz, Blues, Gospel, Funk, Rock and Soul. The album was recorded across five countries, in seventeen different studios, featuring twenty three musicians. For the first time, lyrics adorn a Mauri Sanchis album, including those of R&B icons Keysha, Deveron Patterson and Roy Young. Randy Brecker and Chuck Loeb are included on the international guest list, with Kepa Junkera, Sole Gimenéz and Javier Vargas proudly representing Spain. This album is organic Retrofunk, warm soul ballads, haunting blues. A team of genuine musicians thumbing their noses at artificial loops and samples with ingenuity and flair. Remember the name – Mauri Sanchis. Qfm’s select tracks: El Ghetto, The Shark, Make It Simple.

Music from these albums is currently featured on Qfm 94.3 and www.Qmusica.com, officially ranked as the Canary Islands’ most listened to online broadcaster. (Independent Source – Shoutcast Relay Server Stats, January to July 2009). september 2009

Inspiration and style Would you like to venture out of the ordinary, and use cosy and functional furniture in your home which is casual and yet sturdy, combined with made to measure soft furnishings with top class fabrics? Why not try rattan or wicker furniture? Generally, the term wicker refers to products derived from cane, seagrass, water hyacinth, abaca, banana or other natural materials. It‘s stronger than you think, but nevertheless light and easy to move around, which is important when it comes to cleaning. Wicker furniture is weather resistant so it is also ideal for your terrace or balcony, and it looks good as well. Comfortable and durable quality

Around the world on a cruise ship by Gerald Ruben

Just back from a wonderful cruise aboard Royal Princess which took in the Holy Land, Turkey, Egypt, the Greek Islands and Italy. I will report on this later as we are now going to Pago Pago. We left Honolulu at 18.00 hours and a course of 199 degrees true was set for Pago Pago. We had four wonderful sea days in the North Pacific, the temperature varied between 24 and 29 degrees but with a slight breeze it was very comfortable. These sea days are very relaxing, especially if you have just experienced a hectic period of land excursions and it also allows time to catch up on letter writing and emails. There are several interesting lectures to go to plus you can find out what on board friends did at the last port. Since we left Honolulu on Thursday 5th February and arrived in Pago Pago, Aurora has sailed 2,269 nautical knots at an average speed of 20.7 knots. On Tuesday 10th at 06.42, she entered the fine natural harbour at Pago Pago. At 07.19 Aurora commenced her swing bow to starboard, and by 07.32 she was backing down the quay. At 07.45 Aurora was alongside her berth and the order was given to commence ‘running lines’. By 08.22 we were all

fast alongside our berth with clearance granted for the first passengers to proceed ashore. As you all know, almost every time a ship enters port she has to pick up a pilot and Pago Pago is no exception. However there is a nice gesture made by the Pago Pago pilots in the manner of the presentation of a Lava-Lava, a colourful sarong worn by the island people, meant as a welcome gift to the Captain of the cruise ship. So what has the island got to offer and what is its history? Pago Pago is American Samoa. The Samoan group of islands lies in the centre of the South Pacific, surrounded by Tokelau, the Cook

Islands, Tonga Fiji and the Ellice Islands. Since 1899 they have been divided into the now independent nation of Western Samoa, with nine islands and American Samoa with seven. Tutuila is the largest on the American side with Pago Pago its capital. It is 18 miles long and six miles across, only one third the size of the Isle of Wight. Well within the tropics some 14 degrees south of the Equator, they benefit from the south east trade winds which blow from May to November when the weather is at its driest and most pleasant. The population of American Samoa is about 65,000 of whom 95 per cent live on Tutuila. The indigenous people are of Polynesian origin and are believed to have inhabited Samoa for 25 centuries. It is a beautiful island with towering mountains and a jagged coastline. The locals are really friendly and go out of their way to welcome you. Eating out really means eating out. If you get an opportunity go to an Umu feast. A traditional Polynesian earth oven is used and dishes include baked coconut cream in taro and banana leaves, raw fish marinated in coconut cream, lemon juice, chilli and onions, papaya pudding, chicken, fish,

roast suckling pig and root vegetables. Local crafts include baskets, bags, fine mats woven from pandanus leaves and carved wooden items such as kava bowls. Taxis are available but do agree the price before getting in, local buses are a must as they are converted commercial trucks gaily painted with flowers and full on music. The official currency is the US dollar, and some places accept major credit cards. There are some excellent beaches especially Bare foot beach and bar. Called Alega, it is a typical South Pacific beach with coconut trees growing in the sand and small shells dotted around. Modest attire is expected in town. Do not stretch your legs out in front of you when sitting down or eat while walking through the village. Sundays are observed as in Victorian England and visitors are asked to respect this custom. At 18.00 with all mooring lines gone, Aurora thrust bodily off her berth and proceeded ahead passing several moored tuna boats. Once clear of the offshore reefs a course was set for Lautoka. However before arriving at our next port we will experience the amazing Tin Can Island.

Golf Pro Tip of the Month Upper cut for distance Every golfer wants to hit their drives a long way. To maximise your distance, let me give you a tip on the ‘upper cut for distance’. As you can see in this picture, I have set my alignment stick at the height of the teed up ball for my driver. This is a great launch angle to maximise distance. Make sure when you tee it up that the middle of the ball is level with the top edge of your driver.

On your backswing make sure you create lots of width. I mean make sure that at this position your arms are well away from your chest!

Top of the backswing. We should make sure that we have reached the top with a broad shoulder turn and with your back facing the target. 90 per cent of your body weight should be on the inside of your back foot.

As shown in this picture, where I am using my driver’s head cover as a boxing glove, you need to create for yourself a mental picture of hitting the ball with your driver as a boxer would deliver a lethal blow with his upper cut. This analogy of upper cut into driving a golf ball will help you with your launch angle and subsequently will improve your yardage.

To get yourself into a powerful finish posture you should try to unwind with lots of freedom in your shoulders and hips until you try to make your right shoulder the closest part of your body to the target when you finish your swing. Try this on the range to boost your confidence and your distance!

Why you need to get your clubs re-gripped The Golf Grip is the only point of contact between the player and the club so it is essential that the grip both feels comfortable and performs well. Golf grips which are worn or shiny will give less grip to the player (especially in wet weather) and can cause the club to slip in the hand and decrease the accuracy of the shot. Grip deterioration is a gradual process, so often you don’t notice that your grip is in bad condition until you feel a new one. Worn grips can also cause you to grip the club harder than you are supposed to, which again can cause irregular shots. So don’t needlessly drop shots in your game, make sure your grips are in good condition.

Choosing the correct grip size Having the correct grip size is essential for all players, as a grip which is too thin can often cause an early release, resulting in a pull or hook. A grip which is too thick for a player will often cause the player to block or slice the ball. A larger grip (midsize or Jumbo) would benefit n a player with large hands n a player who consistently draws or hooks the ball n a player with arthritis who struggles to hold a smaller grip n a player whose fingers wrap around the grip and dig into their own palm A smaller grip (ladies, ladies built up) would benefit n a player with smaller hands n a player who consistently slices or fades the ball n a player who requires more club head ‘feel’ n a player whose fingers do not fully encircle the grip

Grips The Golf Pride is one of the most popular grips in golf today and combines an exclusive, state-of-the-art rubber blend compound with a computer designed, non-slip surface pattern for maximum playability, comfort, and confidence.
