Corpus Christi La Orotava and La Laguna, June 18

Many towns decorate their streets and plazas with flower and sand carpets to celebrate Corpus Christi. Most notable of these are La Laguna and La Orotava where the giant 950 square metre carpet is of a different (usually religious) design every year and takes several weeks to prepare. During its manufacture and when it is complete on June 18th it will be contemplated by thousands of visitors. Adding to the magical atmosphere are the surrounding streets which are carpeted with sand and flower petals giving off a wonderful aroma. Finally, a religious procession at 6pm that evening destroys all of them.

The night of San Juan The arrival of the summer solstice is welcomed on 24th June, the night of San Juan, with bonfires not only on the coasts but in villages as well. On many beaches the party around the bonfire continues into the early hours. The night of San Juan is celebrated in San Juan de la Rambla, Granadilla, La Victoria, Los Silos, Tacoronte, Icod de los Vinos (San Marcos), Las Teresitas, Puerto de la Cruz, Punta del Hidalgo, Playa San Juan and many more.

People come from all the surrounding villages, in traditional dress, on board decorated wagons to attend this traditional pilgrimage in honour of the saint. There will be religious acts and processions, and later on folk singing, dancing, and merrymaking with food and drink flowing from the wagons. There will also be folklore and art festivals, sporting competitions and a craft fair. If you are in the south of the island, this is a fiesta not to be missed!

Design a garden I assume anyone who owns a plot of land has thought more than once about garden design. So why not take a look at Chinese gardens and apply some ancient rules from Asia to bring in more harmony? The term ‘Feng Shui garden’ is actually not quite correct, but it is often used for Chinese gardens. The rules of Feng Shui are actually related more to artificial environments like houses. However, there are some Feng Shui rules related to the surroundings of a house and in many cases, houses are connected with gardens. Basically a Chinese garden is no vegetable garden. Anyone who likes to cultivate fruit and vegetables should create a separate area for this purpose.

A real Feng Shui garden serves for relaxation and should offer us a place where we can recharge our batteries. There are two possible ways to achieve this: we can create a garden so that it looks like a picture and offers a nice view from a terrace or a window, or we make a ‘moving’ garden with a path to walk through so we can discover new things on the way. The first variation is better suited to small gardens, while the moving garden needs a bit more space.

The basic rules A garden lives through its plants, but also depends on its decoration. According to the Chinese five elements, plants belong to the wood element and are fed by the water element. Therefore,

water is a must in a Feng Shui garden. This can be a small well or a pond - up to a small stream. Use your imagination to create your personal water feature. What and where to put plants is the essential factor during garden planning. A rule that my Feng Shui master taught me is: â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Trees never grow small!â&#x20AC;&#x2122;. If the garden is connected to a building, this rule is of great importance. If trees grow too near to a house, they might influence the energy of the building in quite a negative way. The roots of a tree have more or less the same size as its stems, branches and its crown. Thus if a tree is too close to a house, the roots can grow under the foundation and damage it. A big tree may block the light - I have seen many cases where branches had to be cut away from windows again and again. Therefore, a certain distance should be kept between tree and house, while shrubs and smaller plants are a better choice near a building.

Another basic rule refers to perfect proportions. Choose a harmonious grade between big and small plants to make small gardens look bigger. Therefore, small, medium and large plants should be laid out in a way that they can overlook each other.

The seasons Plants change throughout the year. Flowers blossom and wilt, tree leaves change their colour. Choose plants so that your garden looks beautiful in every season. A garden can look quite sad, especially in late autumn and winter if it has only broad-leaved trees, so try to plant some evergreen trees and bushes as well to create a nice all-year mix of colours. Flowers blossom at different times. If they are carefully selected you can always enjoy some colour in your garden and thus strengthen its vital impression.

Artificial objects Objects like statues, benches, rocks etc. can be used to make a garden more interesting, particularly if they are not completely visible. If you want to have paths, make sure they are not too straight. Choose smooth curves instead! This gives the impression of a bigger space, especially if you cannot see where the path is leading. Even in a small garden a path ending behind a bush can create the illusion that there is more to explore.

The sun and the wind In your garden you should be aware of the sun and the wind. Find south facing places for putting a bench or other things to sit on. These areas should always be protected from the wind. A chilly breeze can spoil the enjoyment of the nicest looking garden, while a sheltered sunny spot also has its charm in lower temperatures.

Even though a Feng Shui garden is drawn up artificially, it should always look natural. n If your garden has different levels, they should be incorporated in a natural way. n Water always flows downhill, thus a pond is appropriate at the lowest point of the garden. n The garden shouldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t look ostentatious. n Small gardens should accommodate smaller plants, so that the proportions remain consistent.

XIV Rotary Golf Charity Tournament Over 80 golfers took part in the recent Rotary Golf charity tournament at Golf Costa Adeje, mostly ex-pat British and Irish residents from the south of Tenerife. Brass in pocket From Yellow Pages manager to Rock Chick supreme, Chrissie Hynde is the living embodiment of what it takes to survive in the tough and mostly male non-pop world of music.

Born and raised in Ohio, Hynde was always more interested in the world of music than any other, and from 1973 to 1978, living both in London and France, sang with a variety of bands, but didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2DC;t make the big time. During the same time she wrote for NME, worked in Vivienne Westwoodâ&#x20AC;&#x2DC;s SEX clothing shop and waitressed, but all she really wanted was to be on stage with a band. In 1978 a producer Dave Hill heard a demo tape and encouraged her to take her time to form her own group. She met up with Peter Farndon and the pair got together with James HoneymanScott and The Pretenders was formed, with their first single, Stop Your Sobbing/The Wait released in 1979, making the top thirty in the UK. Their first album Pretenders, released later that year, went to NÂş one. While the band line up would change over the years, Hynde remained in front, a rarity in the world of male band leaders, earning respect among peers and fans, and becoming something of a punk and rock icon in the 80s and 90s. She has just released a new album, Boots of Chinese Plastic, which is being promoted during the tour that sees Hynde and the band perform in the Santa Cruz Auditorio in Tenerife on July 6th, one of seven Spanish gigs this summer. Tall Ships Atlantic Challenge The magnificent tall ships sailed into Santa Cruz as part of the Atlantic Challenge 2009 on 16th May. Scallops flambĂŠed in Gran Marnier Ingredients

Method

4 scallops per person Butter 70gr Gran Marnier 10cl Lobster or Seafood Bisque 30cl Salt Pepper (preferably Szechwan) Basmati rice 300gr Orange and lemon rind Leeks, 300gr Ginger 10gr Coriander Â˝ bunch

SautĂŠ the scallops in the butter, and once coloured, flambeĂŠ with the Gran Marnier. Simmer to reduce the liquid. Add a little Bisque and leave to reduce again. Season with salt and pepper. Cook the Basmati rice according to the instructions and add the orange and lemon rind. Chop the coriander leaves and add to the rice. Cut the leeks into fine strips, sautĂŠ them in the butter with a little water and the ginger. Add to the rice. To serve, arrange the rice on one side of the plate and the scallops on the other and garnish. 20 minutes Diff

Why do we still purchase in the Canary Islands? Property adviser John Bokobsa from Soviten Gestion SL answers this question: When we talk about the Canary Islands, we always think about the sun. We all agree that the Canaries are the Florida of Europe, and Tenerife, the largest island, is only four or five hours flight time away from anywhere in Europe. Since the seventies, Europeans have purchased property for their retirement so that they can spend the rest of their lives in a sunny place like Tenerife. Today is still the same, German and English people continue to search for properties, but with the economic crisis, they visit several potential deve-

lopments before they make their final decision, and I think that this is a good attitude in order to make the right decision. It is not only for this reason that people still want to buy property in the Canary Islands, but also because the construction quality is much better than it was before. There are lots of properties to choose from in several areas, for instance FanabĂŠ, El GaleĂłn (Adeje), Chayofa, Golf Costa Adeje or Golf Las Americas where the design and the quality of the new developments are much more attractive than they were years ago. I think it is also important to talk about purchasersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; attitudes during this financial crisis.

I realised during the last three months that potential buyers want to purchase a quality or a luxury property with two objectives in mind, the first is to get a good deal and the second is to protect their own investment. The banks today don’t give a good return on their money (around 2.5 per cent or less in England, for example), so purchasers want to invest in property again because they all know that within the next five years its value will have increased substantially. For all these reasons I think that the Canarian market is still attractive for Europeans who are looking to purchase property. I have to add also that if we compare mainland Spain with Tenerife, the stock still available for sale is completely different. In mainland Spain there are more than 800,000 unsold properties, while in Tenerife if we consider luxury homes, we have only 200 properties available. So that’s why it is important for future purchasers to understand that this is the time to buy because the south of Tenerife doesn’t have so many new developments under construction and the properties available for sale will be sold during the next six months. If potential buyers wait too long before they make a move, in the case of purchasing a property under construction, they will have to wait around two years before they can move in to their new home. So it is true that people in general still want to invest in the Canary Islands, it is also true that nobody can take the sun away from this part of Europe.

Around the world on a cruise ship by Gerald Ruben At 0200, shipsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; clocks were retarded one hour to GMT minus 10, and with all prearrival checks complete, the first line was sent ashore at 0737. At 0830 clearance was received from the local authorities allowing passengers to proceed ashore. Honolulu is forged from volcanoes and home to mysterious Polynesian gods. It is also modern with soaring structures and the hustle and bustle of city life. It is part of a 1,600 mile long chain of islands which forms the Hawaiian archipelago and was born between 25 and 40 million years ago. At around 500 AD and after journeying across several thousand miles of open ocean in flimsy double hulled canoes complete with pigs, chickens and dogs, the first Polynesian settlers arrived . They founded several small kingdoms, and then proceeded to spend most of their time at war with each other. However it was in 1959 that President Dwight D. Eisenhower proclaimed Hawaii the 50th state. There are no extremes of temperature and with the cool trade winds being constant, even the sunniest days are comfortable. garlands of flowers which they welcome you with as soon as you step off the ship. When we arrived we took the all embracing tour as there was just so much to see and enjoy. Taxis are widely available, but it is advisable to agree a price before setting off. Waikiki Beach is one of the most famous beaches in the world, ideal for surf boarding owing to an underwater ledge which extends a mile out from the shore. Expert riders often travel at about 40 miles an hour. Places to visit include the Iolani Palace which was the Royal Palace of King Kalakaua and his sister Queen Liliuo. It was built in 1882 in Victorian-Florentine style. The Bishop Museum and Planetarium is a memorial to the Princess Bernice Pauahi Bishop. It contains

hands-on exhibits of Hawaiian life. Foster Botanical Gardens are famed for their collection of orchids plus a whole host of other tropical plants and flowers. The Polynesian Cultural Centre operated by the Mormons is certainly worth a visit. It opens at 1.30pm and there is a fantastic canoe show with dancers and rowers which starts at 2.30 pm. Closed on Sundays. Further afield, seven miles from your ship is Pearl Harbour. As this is now a war grave, flip flops and swimwear are not allowed. Leave plenty of time to visit as queues are not unusual. Opens at 7.30am and closes at 5pm. Eating here is not a problem as there are so many high quality eateries - in fact you are spoilt for choice. However, a few worth considering are Chart House, La Salle, Michels, Chals Island Bistro and Fishermanâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Wharf. The official currency is the US Dollar. Banking hours are 8.30am to 4pm Monday to Thursday and to 6pm on Friday. Time to return to Aurora as we will be departing at 1800 and heading towards Pago Pago.

Golf Pro Tip of the Month The pro tip of the month is about grip pressure. Most of the players I know, from scratch golfer to weekend golfer, struggle to grip the club with soft even pressure throughout their swings. As a result the club face can’t rotate freely at impact with the subsequent loss of power and slice. Here I am over the ball where your arms and hands should feel relaxed.

I have now reached the top of the back swing, where my club glided there thanks to a soft, even grip pressure. Try to imagine that the club feels like a tube of toothpaste with no cap on.

Here we go! The transition, the most critical moment of the golf swing. Most golfers would now re-grip their clubs with tons of pressure, with fatal results in the trajectories of their shots. We should continue to maintain light and even grip pressure. An even grip pressure is the secret for power and balance. Let’s have a look at what happens when we achieve this.

Just perfect! The back of my left hand is facing the target. My hands are remaining passive through the impact which will deliver the intended trajectory and power. That’s because I was able to keep the toothpaste in the tube! Had my grip pressure increased coming down to the ball, this would have never been possible and I could not square up the club face to the target. Let’s have a look at what happens with the wrong grip pressure and position.

Oooooooopsss! May Day! May Day! Golf ball flying far right! And short distance! The toothpaste is being spread all over the deck. If I gripped my knife and fork this hard I would starve to death! Remember, Grip it softly throughout your swing with an even grip pressure. Hit it high and watch it fly - there are no bunkers in the sky!
