publisher’s LETTER
welcome to 2021...
wishing all of us the very best for the year! and despite all the challenges and concerns that defined 2020, which reflexively make us want to forget it as fast as possible, a lot of good things happened, too. from strengthening relationships with family, friends and business partners, to discovering deeper meanings, compassion, dedication and effort, we all developed a greater appreciation of what we have. let’s make these qualities a foundation to build on this year and for the years to come. make no mistake - we all know that we will have to live with restrictions for at least a few more months. therefore, it is more important than ever to support both each other and, from an economic perspective, our local businesses. we are in this together! there are many things we couldn’t do last year. obviously, travelling was one of them. our epic adventures that have taken us to the four corners of the globe have been such a big part of the magazine over the years and we truly miss them. however, we are blessed to live in an area that offers so much, and so we are currently working on an “adventure on wheels”. we will cross canada - again! but in a very different way. stay tuned for updates.

we hope you like the content of this edition. clearly, the focus is on “anything yachting”. the cancellation of the vancouver boat show in its physical form may have robbed us of the opportunity to see the latest and the coolest launches in person, so hopefully our special will help you to find the ‘“new ride”. heads up! we will see you soon!
some highlights to share... As we were facing stricter local restrictions, we had to cancel a few projects that we had planned. Still, we managed to have some fun, especially when it came to testing the SUVs that you will find in this edition. Robbie was wondering if he could save some money using his Defender in the ocean. Well, the iconic SUV did well but we think Robbie should read our Yachting Special if he wants to get any further on the water. Testing the cars in the snow was, well, pretty cold considering we were wearing suits, but fun. Finally, a big ‘thank you’ to the OCHK-Group, Richmond, for creating our new epic keychains.

FALLEN PRINCE THE NUTCRACKER - REIMAGINED Since 2009, Goh Ballet has presented The Nutcracker, setting a tradition for Vancouver to embrace. A professional large-scale production under the artistic vision of former Principal Dancer of The National Ballet of Canada, Chan Hon Goh, the impact of The Nutcracker has been tremendous, bringing internationally renowned dance superstars, local artists, dancers and musicians together. 2020, the twelfth year of the production, saw many challenges for Goh Ballet and with many restrictions due to the pandemic, it was obvious that The Nutcracker would not be able to come back as a live performance in front of thousands of people in the theatre. In an effort to keep the tradition alive, Goh Ballet collaborated with their sponsor partners RBC, Westbank Corp. and Oakridge, with the concept of a virtual rendition of an original dance story on film. Alex, a 20-year-old struggling dancer in Vancouver, separated from his family during the lockdown, spends the pandemic ridden winter in isolation and is forced to re-examine everything that was once familiar and is no longer. Will the “Fallen Prince” be able to continue his pursuit of a career in the world of ballet? Resonating with many who have experienced challenges, hardships and change as a consequence of the global pandemic, this film stands for human courage, resilience and empowerment as we navigate through these unique times. Executive Producer, Chan Hon Goh collaborated with awarding winning director Lukas Dong and released the film for exclusive preview screening from Dec. 18 to January 2. In case you missed it: “Fallen Prince” will be entering international film festivals in 2021. An inspirational way to celebrate Canadian artists with compelling stories. Goh Ballet’s The Nutcracker will be presented live at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre in Vancouver in December 2021. www.GohNutcracker.com

BANG & OLUFSEN BEOGRAM 4000C Renovating the classic design with new technology, Bang & Olufsen is resurrecting its iconic Beogram 4000c turntable. It was the work of maverick designer Jacob Jensen and released in 1972. IC: In fifteen words or less, who are you and what do you do?
TC: Tim Charles, marine industries entrepreneur. Owner of companies including Platinum Marine and Crescent Custom Yachts. IC: Where are you from and how did you get involved in the marine industry? KC: I am a local guy and ship building is part of
my family’s history. My grandfather, Jack Charles, started out as a hobby boat builder and then founded the Crescent brand in 1986, out of Crescent Beach in South Surrey. My uncle established his own branch of the family haulage business, Arrow Marine Services, which is a full-service marine facility, concentrating on the commercial service, repair and maintenance market, in the late 1990s. As a result, I had been around boats all my life, but I was also determined

to forge my own path, as opposed to following in the family business. Subsequently, just over 17 years ago, I set up my own company, Platinum Marine, with the focus of providing servicing and repairs for both motor and sailing yachts. Everything I’m involved in today has grown from those foundations. IC: Platinum Marine is just one of an
array of connected companies that you now own and operate. What is your overall vision? TC: The vision is to be able to provide a comprehensive range of high-quality solutions for yacht owners, from construction, service and maintenance, housing, mooring, sales and procurement. We want to work with clients that have a passion for being on the water in any form, to
help them realise their goals and dreams. In 2015 the opportunity presented to buy the Crescent Yacht name back from the investment group that had purchased the brand from my family in the early 2000s. They hadn’t really done anything with it and, in fact, failed to launch any craft under the Crescent name. By this time, Platinum was employing over 100 highly skilled crafts people in the indusICONIC CONCIERGE

try, many of whom were retained after the original iteration of Crescent Custom Yachts was sold. As a result, it was an easy decision for us to make in welcoming the brand back into our growing family of marine companies and be able to expand our operations to include custom luxury yacht builds. By this time, Platinum was already offering more than servicing and repairs. We had built a reputation for undertaking high quality yacht refits and transformational overhauls, operating out of the former Crescent shipbuilding facility. We had also created CCY Marine, which is a custom boat house, dock and ramp construction company and tapped into our experience to launch WrapBoats, which brings the benefits of vinyl wrap to the marine industry. More recently, we have added Tactical Custom Boats, which designs and builds high-end all-weather, performance vessels that are perfect for the challenging conditions that can be experienced in the Pacific North West. These are a line of aluminium boats that are designed for speed, comfort and safety in all operating conditions. They share the luxury DNA of our other brands, which ensures that whilst we are building robust, dependable, go-anywhere craft, we don’t compromise the build quality or design. We are also involved in both the Milltown and Bowen Island Snug Cove Marinas, so we really do have all bases covered. IC: Tell us more about the Crescent Custom Yachts brand as it stands in 2021? TC: We wanted to create a brand that

put BC back on the map when it came to luxury yacht builds. We have an incredible team of marine engineers, architects, crafts people and designers from around the world and for what we can’t accommodate internally, we have access to some of the best in the business on a partnership and consultancy basis. We are really one of only three companies in this sector in North America and with the other two based in the US, we already have a competitive advantage in that our costs are lower due to the conversion rate of the Canadian dollar versus the US dollar. Additionally, we felt that the existing acceptance of “fixed price” contracts on custom builds that had led to the demise of other successful custom builders, wasn’t conducive to creating a sustainable business model. Consequently, we have developed our own process, which we call the “OBAC” contract, which is an acronym for “open book at cost”. This approach outlines every line item, specific labour cost, material and overhead cost incurred in building a specified vessel and details it at true cost without mark up or margin. By factoring in these costs to create a high-level budget expectation, which is based on the current market, previous project costs and the complexity of the commissioned design, we work with our clients to make sure that their expectations can be met. Once we have created this outline, we can then construct a time frame to develop the detailed information required to define the target budget and the true costs. By attributing the cost of this process to the client and working closely with them throughout this phase, they then own that information, which, should they decide we aren’t their preferred choice to execute on the build,
From a business perspective, we then negotiate with the client the percentage that both parties are happy for us to make as a company, which considers the time frame, overall utilization of labour resources and the risks we incur. Our clients are successful businesspeople and understand that we are also in business to make money. As a result, they appreciate the transparency and being an engaged part of the process. Additionally, we take a different approach to sourcing components that enables us to greatly reduce build costs, as well as the time taken to complete the projects. As a result, the combination of these factors really helps us enjoy a unique place in the market, able to offer incredible quality in everything we do, whilst creating phenomenal value for our clients. IC: What projects are you currently working on? TC: We have just completed the 117ft luxury spec yacht that is on your cover. It will be on route to Florida in early 2021. It’s a beautiful 5 cabin vessel featuring a contemporary, elegant exterior, designed by the renowned Gregory C. Marshall Naval Architects. We are now working on a 164ft commission, with an exterior that has been designed by the same naval architect and an interior that has been designed by the highly respected London company, H2 Design Studio. When complete, this will be the largest yacht ever built in Canada. Additionally, we are in the early stages of the new Tactical Custom Boats project, which I am really excited about and, which I believe, will really help put us on the map in this market. IC: Which other companies do you look at for inspiration? TC: I look at a lot of other businesses for inspiration, but there aren’t really any specific companies out there that
A 2016 145’ Crescent in a special 330 Ton Travelift, which gives unparalleled ability to transfer vessels to the dry dock for service, repair, major refits and storage. Below, the picture shows the inside of the huge Crescent Yacht building with the new Crescent 164’ besides a Tactical T-40.
provide all the marine services we do under one roof, so we are a bit of an anomaly. I am really proud of what our team has achieved over the last 17 years – there are some key people that have been with me for a long time and they are integral to our success. IC: Where do you see naval innovations going over the coming years, particularly in the transition from diesel engines to cleaner fuel sources? TC: As a smaller, privately owned company, we don’t really have the capacity or budget to be able to invest in moving the needle forward when it comes to research and development of the new technology. Our approach involves us keeping abreast of industry developments that are often driven by the bigger companies, for example the likes of Volvo, and incorporating the technologies once they are readily available for the bespoke construction companies. There is definitely a revolution occurring with respect to engine options but the marine industries are probably around 10 years behind the automotive industry. At the moment, there are companies out there that are starting to use hybrid engines and electric propulsion methods, too, but these are on boats that are much smaller than many of the ones we build. These will come but we are at the beginning of the evolution. We have been involved in some pioneering partnerships, for example with some of the companies that develop the vinyl wrap materials. That enables us to understand the limitations of these materials and give feedback from what we learn too. IC: Do you get much time to get out on the water yourself?
TC: Yes, not as much as I’d like but we are a boating family, so it is important to us as a means to relax and spend time together. We have a 40 foot motor yacht and a sport fishing boat, too but I am really looking forward to developing the latest of the Tactical Boats builds, as that will give me the opportunity to take prospective clients out more often too. IC: If you were to retire tomorrow, which of your projects would you be most proud of? TC: Surprisingly not the bigger custom builds, although Mucho Mas, which was the 145ft luxury yacht that we launched in 2017, really put Crescent Custom Yachts on the map. I am really most proud of the Tactical Custom Boats T-40 Express Yacht. It garnered incredible press coverage and created quite ICONIC CONCIERGE

IC: What was your first car, what do you drive now and what is your dream car? TC: My first was a very high mileage S10 Chevrolet Blazer. I now have a Yukon Denali, a C7 Z06 Track Corvette and I also have a KTM 1290 Super Adventure R bike. My dream car is a next generation F1 car modified to fit a “Husky” guy like me! IC: What one piece of advice would you give to your 16-year old self?

I have never been happier or seen something better than when we’ve been there and the weather is good. ON THE COVER: CRESCENT 117 This Fast Pilothouse uses a hull built in Italy, which allowed Tim Charles and his team to shave a few years off the build time. Renowned Gregory C. Marshall Naval Architect from Victoria, BC, redesigned the superstructure and interior. “Many buyers simply don’t want to wait, so we are delivering a completed boat, in this case with a contemporary interior, and if an owner wants to fine-tune and further customize the boat, we can easily accommodate that,” says Time Charles. The CRESCENT 117 offers five sumptuous staterooms, which accommodate 10 guests in plush comfort. She features a full-beam master stateroom with a king-size bed, large wardrobe and an en-suite bath with a Jacuzzi tub. The yacht’s additional staterooms include two king VIPs and two double staterooms with single beds. Each stateroom is complete with its own en-suite bath. The CRESCENT 117 also has accommodations for five crew in three cabins.

“This allusion to the timelessness of an impeccable fit, the longevity of caring craftsmanship, and the season-transcending versatility of classic combinations, reminds us to look beyond the now and to journey into the future,” opines Will Yoshikawa Chen, Managing Partner at Surmesur Custom Menswear in Yaletown. “The concept of a Capsule Collection isn’t new, however the expression of one must be unique to the lifestyle and goals of each person.”, the Master Clothier continues. “Obviously some
classics, such as our Italian-milled Egyptian cotton Yacht Club Chino, or British Prince of Wales checked garments, will show up again and again, albeit in varying expressions for different personalities and seasons.” “That is the beauty of working with a custom clothier...” concludes Mr. Chen, “unique pieces can be created to serve a man in multiple scenarios for a very, very long time.” In other words: STYLE IS ETERNAL!

BALTIC 142 CANOVA PUSHING THE BOUNDARIES OF SAILING
Constructed entirely out of carbon fibre, the strikingly beautiful Baltic 142 Canova is the first long distance superyacht to be fitted with a transverse Dynamic Stability System foil. Popularised by the America’s Cup, it is designed to reduce heel and motion making this yacht arguably the most comfortable cruising yacht of her type in the world. The sliding carbon foil, weighing 1 tonne, will sit in a casing built into the bilge of the Baltic 142 just below the waterline and slightly aft of amidships. When not deployed, only the tips of the foil will be visible, but when in use at speed it will protrude 22ft (6.5m), pushing the Baltic 142 upright with a corresponding increase in speed and reduced pitching motion. Guests on board the Canova are accommodated in three staterooms: A stunning full-beam master suite with a sole space of more than 65m², features a gimbling bed, lounge sofa with working area, walk-in closet, carbon bath tub/sauna and a hidden thread mill. It enjoys optimum privacy with crew accommodated aft, close to the galley, navigation and yacht operation station. There is further accommodation for four guests in two luxurious en suite cabins. Extensive crew accommodation for eight is located aft. Eco-friendliness was another important factor, alongside comfort and economy. The Canova is fitted with a sophisticated diesel electric propulsion and hydro-generating system with a compact and virtually silent electric motor capable of delivering 425kW, reducing the use of fossil fuel and enabling the yacht to be used for up to nine straight hours without the need to recharge. The yacht also carries a seven-metre custom tender equipped with built-in tanks for the purposes of fuel bunkering in remote locations. MAIN SPECIFICATIONS

PACIFIC SUPERYACHT FORUM LAUNCHING THIS YEAR, the Superyacht Forum will begin on June 20th 2021, taking place in Victoria, BC, in partnership with Victoria International Marina. Having been postponed due to COVID-19, this event will now sit comfortably within the Pacific’s Spring/Summer 2021 calendar, bookended by the America’s Cup and the Tokyo Olympics. “Cruising activity is now on the rise,” says Craig Norris, CEO of Victoria International Marina. “Nobody could have seen COVID-19 coming, but there is a positive outcome for us in British Columbia as we have earned a reputation for being isolated on Vancouver Island and people and businesses are listening and adjusting to public health officers keeping COVID-19 exposure to a minimum. Our spirits are high and our community relationships even stronger than before as we head back towards normality.” Victoria represents the gateway to a 27,000-square-kilometre cruising area encompassing the vast province of British Columbia – an incredible, but relatively untapped area for superyachts to explore. It is a region of huge potential to inspire the superyacht owners of tomorrow, but it is also one requiring investment – in infrastructure and a more robust service sector – as well as charter options for those who recognise the market opportunity. The programme that will shape The Pacific Superyacht Forum will take a step away from conventional workshops in order to truly illustrate this region’s potential, from hikes up into the hills to dives deep in the ocean, there will be networking opportunities like no other. It will be a dynamic and entertaining conference programme, broadcast from the industry’s leading superyacht hubs across Europe to a local live audience and a global online audience. “We are excited to showcase our cruising market and deliver experiences you would never have imagined, and that we need now more than anything else,” Norris concludes. Multi award-winning SILENT YACHTS built the very first fully solar-powered production yacht and celebrated the achievement crossing the Atlantic Ocean in their Silent 64 in 2018. This maiden voyage proved the outstanding durability and efficiency of the company’s solar-electric drivetrain even during unfavourable and rough weather conditions. It underlined their claim to build fully solar-sustainable yachts with the possibility of unlimited range and zero emissions, but supported by a back-up generator should the sun disappear. Whilst the Silent 64 is now discontinued, the company have developed a fleet of solar-powered catamarans
devoid of vibrations, noise and fumes, whilst offering unprecedented levels of comfort and pleasure. The advantages of catamarans over monohulls include increased space, comfort, stability and economy. Silent Yachts’ hull designs are simply cavernous, with the Silent 80 housing a port hull garage for a 4.5m tender, and potentially an amphibious car and gyrocopter on floats. 4-6 double or twin guest cabins can be accommodated, plus 2 crew cabins, with the aft master suite including a study, walk-around closet and sauna. www.silent-yachts.com
EMISSIONS FREE
GULFSTREAMTHE G700 MOST INTERESTING ALL-ELECTRIC AND HYBRID BOATS Since the early 1990s, the interest in more fuel-efficient and emissions-free vehicles has driven the evolution of electric-powered automotive performance. In the early 2000s, several large manufacturers started to invest in both hybrid and all-electric vehicles. The marine industry is several years behind the automotive sector in its evolutionary journey, however, as more cost-efficient batteries continue to reduce the In 2018, VITA became the first powerboat manufacturer to achieve Clearwater Gold Standard ratings in recognition of its low environmental footprint. Their 10 metre Vita X is currently the most powerful electric powerboat on the market, and the only boat available with supercharging capability. Vita has also invested in the development and production of dockside supercharging stations, which are installed and operational in several Côte d’Azur locations. VITA X

price of electric vehicles and technology continues to enhance their durability, the appetite for hybrid and electric powered boats is increasing. We found 7 companies that are producing some of the most innovative, ingenious and beautiful yachts, day boats and superyacht tenders that are not just providing sustainable alternatives to power boats but are turning heads on the water. The founder and CEO of Helsinki-based Q-YACHTS, a keen sailor, set out over a decade ago to develop a silent propulsion system for boats. Today, the innovative Q30 offers the same experience of relaxed speed and silence, that sailing offers. Thanks to its innovative Oceanvolt propulsion technology and the hydrodynamically optimised hull, the boat produces minimal noise www.q-yachts.com and wake. Price: €183,000. Q30
Developed for use on the lakes that bejewel their Austrian home region, family-owned company MARIAN BOATS designed a hull that guarantees maximum efficiency and range. Their boat designers and technical specialists responsible for designing their electric motors have collaborated to create unique driving characteristics, whilst the batteries built into their yachts are comparable with those used by Tesla. The Marian Yachts’ range reflects a greater choice than any other electric boat manufacturers in their sector. From the entry level Eclipse
580, to the award winning M800 and recently launched M800 Spyder that features a bowrider deck design to extend the available space, each of their vessels represents intensive development work, resulting in high-quality boats, recognisable for their precision and elegance. Modern lithium batteries and powerful drive technology enable an impressive driving experience. However, their current CE certification is limited to use in sheltered waters. Prices start at €41,400 for the Eclipse 580 and at €109,800 for the M800. www.marianboats.at
Designed in Belgium and built in the Netherlands, DOMANI designed a completely new type of hull, which was built to exploit the power of electricity to make the boat perform on the water to the highest standards, whilst achieving the best efficiency possible. In addition to its performance through the water, the engineering also focussed on soundproofing of the pumps, motors and propellor. Consequently, thanks to these achievements, combined with the shape of the hull, the only audible sound at 10 knots is that of the bow wave. With a power output of 50kW continuous and cruising speed of 7-12kts, the E32 incorporates cutting edge digital technology and the innovative drive system belongs to a generation of boats where sustainability and durability is highly valued. It is available in three body styles: as a chase boat; with a targa roof providing sun protection and the option for solar energy generation; or with an enclosed hardtop, which represents a more cruising oriented design. www.domaniyachts.com They are quite simply beautiful. Swedish boat builder, CANDELA, collaborated with some of the brightest minds outside of the boat building industry, from aviation industry engineers to others that had experience developing hydrofoil technology, and carbon composite materials. The result is the Candela Seven, the world’s first hydrofoiling electric boat, which flies silently above the water, and can travel 50nm at 20kts. It has a top speed of 30kts and can even navigate high waves in open water. www.candelaspeedboat.com CANDELA
Since 2008, GREENLINE YACHTS have been producing mid-size hybrid-powered boats, with the 33 Hybrid becoming the world’s best-selling 10m boat in 2010. Their latest hybrid vessels use power supplied by battery and solar sources, using up to 4x less fossil fuel than a diesel propelled powerboat in similar conditions. All of their models are available with a fully electric drive system and even the diesel-powered models are fitted with roof-top solar panels to power onboard lighting and refrigeration. www.greenlinehybrid.com GREENLINE OC68

FINDING NEMO EXPLORE EXPLORE THE THE WONDERS OF THE SUBSEA FROM YOUR PERSONAL SUBMARINE TENDERS AND JET-SKIS ARE SO YESTERDAY... You want to be ‘in’? You always like to have the latest stuff, the coolest toys? Play James Bond? Well, in that case we have found the must-have item for you: Your very own personal submarine! Pack a picnic, call your buddies or take the family, and off you go, exploring the oceans or finally shedding some light on whether or not there is an Ogopogo in Okanagan Lake!
Triton 3300/6
For years, owners of megayachts have looked into the possibility of adding a small submarine to their collection of water-toys, as means of entertaining family and friends while at sea. However, until now, a 200’+ yacht with some extra storage and a lift or, even better, a support vessel was needed. Two companies who have recently introduced their newest personal submarines are about to change the game and make underwater adventures very much a possibility in the real world... provided you have a few million to spare. U-BOAT WORX NEMO Made by Dutch manufacturer U-Boat Worx, Nemo is the world’s lightest manned submarine. At 5 feet tall and 5,510 pounds, the Nemo not only fits aboard a variety of ships (it’s essentially the same size as two jet-skis and will fit most superyacht garages), but is also light enough to be towed behind a mid-size SUV.

Under water, however, the two-seater offers even more impressive numbers. The craft is able to dive to a depth of 330 feet and reaches a top-speed of three knots. It can stay under water for up to eight hours. You really want one? Not a problem. All it needs is USD 1,060,800 million. TRITON-SUBMARINE 3300/6 Next up is the Triton 3300/6. This sub is truly a gamechanger. Florida-based luxury submersible company Triton Submarines has recently introduced the first six-person acrylic-hulled sub that can dive to a whopping 1,000 meters (3,280 feet). It won’t get you to the Titanic (which lies at a depth of 12,415 feet/ 3,784 m), but it will open a whole new world to you, the ‘deep-sea.’
Cessna Citation CJ2 private jet, and at a top-speed of three knots, the air-conditioned sub has enough battery power and air for excursions of more than 10 hours. “It’s a very exciting submarine,” Patrick Lahey, president of the company says, “but we’re not stopping there. We’re working on a vehicle that will carry three people to 7,500 feet and we’re continuing with a vehicle that will dive to 4,000 meters and carry two people in an even thicker hull. So it’s an exciting time that we’re living in.” The price? Exploring the depths of the ocean does not come cheap. So how about USD 5.5 million?
Dubbed the “salon under the sea,” the 3300/6 features the world’s largest transparent, spherical passenger compartment, which has a diameter of 2.5 meters, providing an immersive underwater view for those on board. The interior space is said to be equal to that of a

WATERPROOF NAUTICAL WATCHES You don’t have to be a seafarer, own a yacht or go diving on a regular basis, to love the look of a timepiece originally made for a skipper or ocean diver. You may never use the complications such as the clever countdown timers, and it is doubtful that you will ever test its water resistance at depths exceeding a few meters, but when a sailing or dive watch has an appealing look, any landlubber with an eye for design will simply appreciate the cut of its jib. Nautical watches are made to last for decades. Have a look at what we found - some interesting and stylish new and classic models, worth taking on the water.

KONTIKI
“Eterna? Never heard of them. Is it one of the new countless Kickstarter watch companies?” That’s pretty much what we hear when we mention Eterna watches. Very few know about this Swiss luxury watch company, founded in 1856 in Grenchen, Switzerland. And very few know that ETA, the largest manufacturer of Swiss watch movements, was founded by Eterna. Eterna has a very important place in the history of watchmaking. It all started on November 7, 1856, when Dr. Joseph Girard and Urs Schild, a 28-year old school teacher, realized that, with the emerging of the Swiss watch industry, there was a big opportunity for a company producing movements. They established the ébauche (horology: an unassembled or generic watch movement) factory “Dr. Girard & Schild“ and started producing both semi-finished and fully finished watch movements. In 1866, Dr. Girard left the factory. Urs Schild continued the endeavour with his brother Adolph. When the production of movements became less profitable, the brothers started producing fully assembled watches. The first pocket watch, entirely manufactured in Grenchen, was presented in 1876 and the name of the company was changed to “Präzisionsuhren-Fabrik Gebrüder Schild” (Precision Watches Factory Brothers Schild), better known as “Schild Fréres & Co.” Urs Schild died in 1888 and his two sons took over the company and released the “Eterna” collection in 1890. At this point, the company was employing 300 workers and produced 180 timepieces a day. The collection was so popular that the Eterna label was adopted as the corporate brand name in 1906: “Eterna-Werke, Gebrüder Schild & Co.” The next big step came in 1948, when Eterna wrote watchmaking history with the Eterna-matic watch movement. Automatic watch movements were subject to wear and tear, affecting their accuracy and reliability. Eterna’s new ball-bearing mounted rotor, mounted on five miniature ball bearings, ran smoothly and reliably, even under extreme conditions. The Eternamatic was a huge hit, and the five ball bearings were chosen as the new logo. The Eterna-matic movement is still in use today. The Eterna KonTiki The popular KonTiki Collection commemorates the groundbreaking expedition that Thor Heyerdahl, an archaeologist and ethnologist, took in 1947 to prove the theory that South Americans migrated from the east and not the west to populate Polynesia. wanted to prove that pre-Columbian natives of South America could reach Polynesia on a primitive raft with help from just the Humboldt current and the eastern winds. Wearing Eterna watches on their wrists, Heyerdahl and five other scientists reached the Raroia atoll in Polynesia after 101 days, on a simple Balsa-wood raft named after the Incan sun god Kon-Tiki. To celebrate this achievement, Eterna designed a collection of rugged and sturdy pieces to commemorate this iconic trip for explorers everywhere. The Eterna KonTiki is available in a variety of styles from the classic automatic Kontiki with pyramid shaped appendices to the Super Kontiki diver. THEBRONZE AGE TIME WILL TELL
Ah, there it is. Your brand-new, shiny sports car. You collected it from the dealership just two weeks ago. And you can already see the first signs of rust in several areas. Fantastic! Wait, what? Well, we highly doubt you would really like to see that happen but in a way, that’s the idea behind buying a bronze watch. Let us explain.... Bronze is one of the earliest metals known to man. Traditionally composed of copper and tin, bronze was first used in weaponry and decorations around 4,000 BC, roughly the same time the first water clocks appeared. So you can say that bronze and horology were meant to be combined. Especially, considering the fact that bronze is also antimagnetic and resistant to corrosion caused by seawater, making it an ideal alloy for your wrist. Over the last few years, there has been an unprecedented boom in bronze watches, making it almost the new “it” metal. In part, it is because of our desire to have something different and unique. Bronze “ages”, it oxidizes on its outer layer and develops a greenish patina that slowly develops over time. No two watches will ever be the same. Some owners will want to maintain that bright bronze colour as fresh as possible, while others even try to find ways to force the aging process. There are watches that are less than two years old but have the appearance of having spent decades on the ocean floor.
GOOD TO KNOW How to speed up the oxidation Your watch doesn’t get patina fast enough? Don’t worry – just use salt water. Fill a container and submerge the watch (obviously, remove its strap before beginning this process) – and wait. The watch can darken pretty quick and may show some real patina after just a few minutes. Take it out and let it dry. If you want more patina, dip it again. Once you like the result, rinse the watch with water and some soap. There are other solutions to “weather” your watch. You can use vinegar or certain chemical fumes to impact the coloration. Good old Google will help you find the right way to get the result you are looking for. Can you reverse the oxidation process? Yes, you can! From using toothpaste followed by polishing or a mix of baking soda and lemon juice – there are several methods for bringing a proper shine back to your watch.

STEFANO RICCI
OCTAGON Florentine luxury lifestyle brand STEFANO RICCI presents its first range of watches: Octagon. Consisting of a Perpetual Calendar, an Annual Calendar and a Chronograph, it is designed with theatrical geometry on eight sides overlooking the spectacle of time. Ah, Florence! The capital of Italy’s Tuscany region is not only home to many masterpieces of Renaissance art and architecture, it is also the home to the eponymous company since 1972. “Florence, the city where I was born, has always been an inspiration for me. Its geometry, architecture and art convey a sense of incorruptible balance in the face of time,” says founder Stefano Ricci. And the octagonal floor plan, the shape chosen by him as a symbol of society and the matrix of his design, can be found in numerous architectural masterpieces, such as the Baptistery, the Dome of Santa Maria del Fiore, the Rotonda of Santa Maria degli Angeli, and the Tribuna degli Uffizi. “When designing my watch, I imagined eight essential chain links enveloping the radial symmetry with a vertical axis, the expressions of time, its calendar or its dimensions,” Ricci explains. “It is a constant stream, guarded by the interpretation of a thread, of which only the beginning can be defined. This woven thread, these details, these elements of the timepiece all lose their physical connotations to become an entire tribute to Florence”.
Measuring 45.5 mm in diameter and 14.8 mm in thickness, including the cuvette, the movements come from a haut-de-gamme manufacturer in Fleurier, Switzerland. The Chronograph features a Dubois-Dépraz tri-compax module and both the Perpetual Calendar and the Annual Calendar feature an astronomical moon phase, which only needs a correction of one day every 122 years. The hand-stitched alligator strap features a white gold folding clasp, with an octagonal buckle that bears eight radial-notched screws.
For his debut in the watchmaking field, STEFANO RICCI decided to produce the Octagon collection in three models: a Perpetual Calendar, an Annual Calendar and a Chronograph. Each one is made in a limited series of 10 pieces with the manufacturing run also adopted for the Diamond Lux Limited Edition versions, which are set with 88 princess cut diamonds, amounting to a total of over 8 carats. The Stefano Ricci Octagon watches retail from about US$110,000 to US$200,000

APOCALYPSE_NOW IN THE MARKET FOR A CONDO? HOW ABOUT ... A BUNKER? The Day After Tomorrow. Doomsday. This time it was very easy to find a fitting title for this article. Yes, what you are looking at is a high-end nuclear underground bunker, a place for the world elite to prepare for the apocalypse. Many of the 1% have chosen to design their own secret shelters to house their families and staff, a booming business that has seen construction at private estates skyrocketing to 700% in recent years. But while some prefer to bunker down alone or with their families, others prefer the idea of a community to avoid the side-effects of loneliness. Most of us would imagine a concrete room filled with cots and canned goods when it comes to a bunker. And as much as the threat of global annihilation may feel as present as it did during the Cold War, today’s high-security shelters could not be more different from their 20th century counterparts.
There are several developers of community shelters, often using decommissioned military bunkers or missile silos with walls up to 9 ft. thick, avoiding the cost of building these structures. Instead, they take these existing fortified structures and add modern power, filtration and water purification systems. They include food supplies for a year or more, and some even include the comforts of a small town with spas, gyms, a clinic, classrooms and even a movie theater and supermarket. One of these companies offering luxury doomsday condos is Survival Condo. An inverted skyscraper, using a Cold War US government missile silo in (or, better below) central Kansas, has been converted to what must be the most lavish and sophisticated bunker-structure in the world. It reaches 60 meters or 15 stories deep, and will shelter up to 75 people for 5 years from nuclear, chemical, and biological threats. Resort-style. And yes, the filters will also prevent COVID-19 from entering the complex (just make sure no fellow condo owner brings the virus with them). Boasting a total of 54,000 square feet, seven floors are for luxury living with condos that have all the goods a luxury
apartment could want with three bedrooms and two bathrooms. If that isn’t enough, the Penthouse is approximately 3600 sq. ft. over two levels and can be completely customized to the buyer’s tastes and needs. Outdoor “simulated view” windows in each unit show “life-like” outdoor views complete with varying light levels that reflect time of day, creating a normal above ground living experience. An owner of one of the penthouses has gone the extra mile, filming Central Park from her own Manhattan loft during all four seasons, night and day. She also had a ‘balcony’ installed, complete with sliding glass doors, and a ‘view’ generated with state-of-the-art projectors. As for the amenities, there is a saltwater pool with water slide, a gym, library, a classroom, a cinema and you can even find a pet park. Not to forget the fully-equipped Medical First Aid Center. A grocery store will pretty much have whatever you desire, including fresh produce: An aquaculture set up is used for raising fish like salmon and hydroponics for growing organic vegetables like tomatoes, lettuces or fruits like strawberries and blueberries. Finally, and just to be prepared, there’s an indoor shooting range. You never know, right? Those damn zombies. But fear not - the Survival Condo also comes with the highest level of military grade security that offers both lethal and non-lethal measures in order protect the residents. According to the developer, all units in the Survival Condo which range from US$1.5 million to US$3 million for full-floor condos, and penthouses starting at US$4.5 million, are sold out. However, a sister structure still has a few units left. According to the developer, only a portion of the total fee is for the actual Survival Condo unit, as the price includes mandatory training, a three-year per person food supply, fully furnished and custom designed interiors, special equipment for registered members, computer access to condo systems, and much more. And should you be wondering if you can stay in your condo even when there is no crisis or problem, the answer is ‘yes’. The fully functional facility is ready for full or part-time occupancy. www.survivalcondo.com

ASTON MARTIN DBX a piece of that promising pie. Mercedes just introduced their Maybach-SUV, Rolls-Royce, Bentley, Aston Martin and soon Ferrari all followed the call to get their share. The fastest, the most luxurious, the most expensive - what had been a domain of sportscars and sedans now opened its doors to the SUV-world. In this first part, we had to pick our favourites in the luxury SUV-category and a price range of $200,000-$300,000. Yes, there are super-low-volume SUVs available from boutique
manufacturers and tuning-houses, but we had to pick models that are accessible through local Vancouver dealerships. “Game On! - and so Robbie and I headed out and met again the next day, both having picked a British-crossover (interesting - both are actually not owned by British companies). Robbie picked the newly updated 2021 Bentley Bentayga, whilst I went the sporty way, deciding for the brand-new Aston Martin DBX. Go to page70 for our picks in the up to $100,000 category.

A NEW DIMENSION 2021 ASTON MARTIN DBX SO SHOULD THERE EVEN BE AN ASTON MARTIN SUV? In a perfect world, the British car manufacturer would only build stunning sportscars. In reality, the crossover market is huge and too important not to capitalize on it. And there is one thing I can say about the DBX - it delivers its own brand of beauty and features those sexy lines with its muscular shoulders that Aston Martin is known for and that have made me a fan. Therefore, if I have to pick a crossover in the ultraluxury market, the DBX would be on top of my list. The DBX is Aston’s first SUV and is built on a brand-new architecture. At the moment, there’s just one engine option for the five-seater - the same 4.0-litre twin-turbo Mercedes-AMGsourced V8 that you find in the DB11 and Vantage, here producing 542 hp and 516 lb-ft through a 9-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive. Add a triple-chamber air-ride, a bunch of electronically-controlled differentials, electric ride control and lots of other up-to-date tech. The result is a sprint to 100 km/h in 4.5 seconds and a top speed of 291 km/h. Impressive, although not as fast as some of the rivals. But being the fastest is not what an Aston Martin is about, and the DBX was

developed to cope with anything from mud to the racetrack, utilizing one of six drive modes (GT, Sport, Sport+, Individual, Terrain and Terrain+). On the inside, the DBX doesn’t disappoint either. You’ll find a herd’sworth of cow, and if that’s not enough, Aston Martin’s ‘Q’ Department will most likely get you whatever you desire. There is enough room for four people, and on occasion, you can squeeze in a fifth, but with its sporty shape, you won’t find as much legroom as, let’s say, in the Bentley. The folding rear seats split 40:20:40 and I should mention that there are 632 liters of cargo space plus an additional 62-litre compartment under the trunk floor. The DBX is a driver’s car. The seats give lots of comfort and support, the steering wheel feels fantastic and the Mercedes-derived infotainment unit is well placed. There are lots of useful toys (I had to get used to the DBX hitting the brakes for me at times, though) and even the ‘base’ stereo system with its 14-speakers and 800-watts is fantastic. Bottom-line: The DBX hits all the targets for me. It looks and feels Aston and is actually pretty practical.
LUXURY LEVELS 2021 BENTAYGA V8 JUST OPEN THE DOOR AND HAVE A PEAK INSIDE. That’s it. That’s all you have to do to realize that this is one of the most beautiful interiors out there. Nothing more to add. Who cares if it goes zero to a hundred in 4 or 5 seconds when you sit in the most comfortable seats, smell some of the finest handstitched quilted leather, touch finely knurled buttons placed in an abundance of crafted wood and can stretch out your legs in the rear of the car and enjoy a cup of Earl Grey? But okay, I guess you would like to hear that despite all of this the Bentayga is a genuine off-roader. So here we go, a bit more of the 2nd generation Bentley Bentayga. The Bentayga has been a huge success for Bentley with more than 20,000 cars sold since its introduction and, more importantly, with 70% of its customers new to the brand. We actually drove it back then and published a story and although I always liked the posh interior, the overall look of the car wasn’t really for me, something just wasn’t right. Well, the fully refined design of this second generation with every panel at the front of the car reshaped brings it closer to the Continental GT and Flying Spur. The overall proportions finally work, even the rear-

Hitting the road, Bentley’s 4.0-litre, 32-valve dual twin-scroll turbocharged V8 petrol engine actually does the 0-100 sprint in exactly the same time as the DBX - 4.5 seconds, and with de-activating four of its eight cylinders in suitable conditions, you safe on fuel. Should you want to dominate the racetrack, go for the W12 “Speed” model. The fastest SUV Bentley has ever made takes you to one hundred in 3.9 seconds and reaches a top speed of 306 km/h. Also, an ecological hybrid Bentayga will be available, too. The great outdoor-adventure. If you really have a desire to take the Bentayga through the mud, do it. E JUST FOUND OUT WHAT YOU CAN GET WHEN YOU ARE WILLING TO SPEND MORE THAN $200,000 ON AN SUV. IN THE SECOND PART OF OUR STORY WE WERE ASKED TO FIND THE BEST SPORT UTILITY VEHICLE FOR LESS THAN $100,000. LET’S SAY YOU HAVE A LUXURY SEDAN, AND/OR A SUPERCAR IN THE GARAGE BUT YOU NEED A RIDE TO BRING YOU AND THE FAMILY UP THE MOUNTAIN IN THE WINTER. IS THERE ANYTHING STYLISH WITH A TOUCH OF LUXURY THAT YOU CAN GET WITHOUT SPENDING A FORTUNE? YES, THERE IS!
$100,000 is a lot of money. Not too long ago, it would have bought you a top-of-the-line sportscar, or a prestigious luxury sedan. Times have changed, though, and these days even a well-equipped middle-class sedan gets you very close to this magic number. So what can you get for an amount that many spend on a new watch? Something with lots of power, tons of luxury touches, and some head-turning style thrown into the mix, too. Actually, you can go several ways here to really find what you are looking for. If you want the over-the-top luxurious interior with all the tech-gimmicks that are available, you will have to spend the six-figures on a smaller SUV,

The brand-new Land Rover Defender. Admittingly, quite the head-turner with its reimagined look of the British legend.
Our mission to find the “best bang for the buck” up-to $100k didn’t have any extra rules other than finding an SUV that would do the job transporting the family and moving some cargo, and the same time would look stylish enough to leave the car with the concierge at the next gala-event (fingers crossed - we miss

THE ROLE MODEL 2021 BMW X5
YOU CAN GET BEHIND THE WHEEL of the BMW X5 starting at $77,500 - which gives you a lot of extra money to spend on options to get to the $100k mark. Or, you can opt for the performance model, the M50i, which sets you back $93k, and just pick a few things in addition to this already well-equipped SUV. Either way - the X5 is a true winner in this contest, offering quality, performance and styling. The idea was to find an SUV that effortlessly blends on-road driving satisfaction with modern technology and a posh cabin—and the 2021 BMW X5 does just that. It also enters the 2021 model year with a few updates and adds the xDrive45e plug-in-hybrid trim to the lineup. From the outside, especially when ordered the M50i, or with one of the optional M-packages, the X5 has a bold and athletic look. Proportional, it is one of the best looking SUVs in its class. Inside, the cabin is lined with highquality materials and, depending on the options chosen—a myriad of luxury features. Everything looks and feels high-end, and the seats must be some of the best out there. The X5 comes standard with heated

front seats, a panoramic sunroof, dual-zone automatic climate control, a power rear liftgate, rainsensing windshield wipers, and customizable ambient lighting. The M50i adds some extra goodies you can also order for the other models, such as remote start, soft-close doors, acoustic glass, a leather dashboard, heated front armrests and steering wheel, and the very cool gesture controls. Overall, the interior space is generous for adults in both the first and second row, but the optional third row is for kids only. We opted for the M50i with the new N63 4.4L TwinPower Turbo V8, M Sport differential, M Sport exhaust system and model-specific M GmbH suspension. It has all the power you need and sounds fantastic. It also comes with a more sculpted look and a few other “M” accents. The X5 set the tone more than two decades ago, and it hasn’t stopped since. If you are looking for a highquality SUV with great brand recognition, a luxurious interior and state-of-the-art technology, paired with one of the best intelligent allwheel-drive systems, head over to the Brian Jessel dealership and take it out for a test-drive.
REIMAGINED
2021 LAND ROVER DEFENDER YES, I ACTUALLY BOUGHT IT! That’s how convinced I am that this is the best value in the up-to $100k class. It’s a Land Rover after all. Even my nanny back at Dickson Manor drove one! And Motor Trend just named it the 2021 SUV of the Year. The all-new Defender is available in several versions, from the 2-door 90 S, starting at $59,700, all the way to the 110 X that I bought, which sets you back at least $96,000. With the Explorer Package and a few other things, the total was a bit more than $100k, but it really adds to the look of the Defender. The new Defender is actually a retro, a modern interpretation of the legendary model from the early 1980s, which in itself was a reimagined version of the original Land Rover Series which was launched in 1948. But back to the 2021 model. As much as I like the look of the twodoor 90 model, the four-door 110 is just more practical, and I definitely wanted the turbocharged-and-supercharged 395-hp inline-six P400 engine so I have enough power to haul a car to Area27. The X also comes with an air suspension, and

an 11.5 inches ground clearance means that I can ford through 35.4 inches of water (which I actually just did!). Inside, the cabin is a bit of a mix between premium and utilitarian, and I like it. Exposed rivets and a structural magnesium beam that runs the full width of the dashboard give it a very cool rugged appearance. Everything sits where it should, with a trapezoidal extension of the dashboard for the shifter, climatecontrol, starter and driving mode switch. The 110 has lots of room for up to 5 people, and once you fold the rear seats you get a large cargo bay for the Home Depot-run. Off-road, I doubt anything in this class can do what the Defender is capable off. The new platform is both lighter and three times stiffer than a traditional body on frame. Add the cross-linked air suspension, automatic center and rear differential and an electronic brake-based front “differential,” and even intense off-road situations are easy to master. There’s even a ground-view camera which lets you look at the surface the front tires are currently traversing! And there you go - the Defender is the ultimate off-road grand tourer and my clear choice. ICONIC CONCIERGE

SUPERCAR SANTA MAKE-A-WISH CHARITY AUCTION
In the lead up to Christmas, Iconic Concierge, joined a number of supercar owners and car dealerships in answering the call from The Luxury Alliance Group, organizers of events such as The Hublot Diamond Rally, to help raise funds for Make-A-Wish Canada. More than 430 “Wish Kids” had their wishes postponed due to the pandemic, and while the ability to grant wishes that involve travel and gatherings have been greatly impacted, we can still help through our donations. The idea was to create and auction-off miniature “ride-on” versions of some of the supercars driving around Vancouver, and in the end, 20 little masterpieces were purchased and donated for the live online bidding, organized by ADESA Auctions. Some of the ride-on-cars were even sold again after the auction, with those extra proceeds being donated to MakeA-Wish. Thank you so much! In the end, more than $31,000 were raised on December 5th, making sure that our Wish-kids will get their dreams fulfilled: Joshua will visit Legoland and Matteo will finally see elephants in the wild. On a personal note, we would like to thank LEGO Canada for teaming up with us, and putting some of their amazing Technickits under Joshua’s Christmas tree.

KEVIN MICHAEL COSTNER is best known “for his impressive portrayal of rugged characters with complex emotions.”
a role in Silverado. This became the breakthrough for Costner, who consequently enjoyed wider access to more propitious film roles.
Born as the third son of Bill and Sharon Costner on January 18, 1955 in Lynwood, California, Costner remembers his teenage years as a period when he “lost a lot of confidence”, having to make new friends often moving around different parts of California as his father’s career progressed.
Following roles in smaller films such as Fandango and American Flyers, Costner appeared alongside Kiefer Sutherland in an hour-long special episode of Steven Spielberg’s Amazing Stories. 1987 proved to be the year that he finally achieved star status in Hollywood. Directed by Brian De Palma, Costner would star alongside Sean Connery and Robert De Niro in The Untouchables. The same year, he took the leading role in the thriller No Way Out and finished the decade with two more acclaimed movies, Bull Durham (1988) and Field of Dreams (1989).
Being actively involved in sports, he became interested in acting and dancing during his last years at California State University in Fullerton. Costner graduated with a BA in marketing and finance and, soon after, married Cindy Silva. Although he had a strong desire to become an actor, he chose instead to work for a marketing firm in California. It was Richard Burton who would change Kevin Costner’s mind. On the flight back from their honeymoon in Puerto Vallarta, they had a chance encounter with Burton, who agreed to speak to him. Costner told Burton that he would prefer to avoid the drama that followed Burton and asked if he would have to tolerate that if he became an actor. “You have blue eyes, I have blue eyes. I think you’ll be fine,” Burton replied. Him and Costner never met again but Costner credits him with partially contributing to his career. Costner quit his marketing job and relocated to Los Angeles with his wife. He started to take acting lessons, whilst working jobs that allowed him to develop his acting skills. These included giving tours of celebrities’ Hollywood homes, working as a truck driver and crewing fishing boats. In 1978, Kevin Costner made his film debut in Sizzle Beach, USA, which was only released in 1981. A few brief roles followed before, in 1983, he landed a bigger part in Stacy’s Knights. Costner then made a brief appearance in the Ron Howard film Night Shift (1982), followed by a role in Lawrence Kasdan’s The Big Chill (1983) alongside highprofile stars, including Tom Berenger, Glenn Close, Jeff Goldblum and William Hurt. Unfortunately, his scenes were removed from the final cut. However, Kasdangave him a second opportunity in 1985, offering Costner

In 1990, Kevin Costner decided to try his hand at directing and producing. He partnered with producer Jim Wilson and founded the production company Tig Productions. Their first film, Dances with Wolves (1990), in which Costner starred, was nominated for 12 Academy Awards and won seven, including two for him personally (Best Picture and Best Director). The same year saw the release of Revenge, in which he starred alongside Anthony Quinn and Madeleine Stowe. The next projects consolidated his existence in Hollywood. Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves (1991); the Oliver Stonedirected JFK (1991); The Bodyguard (1992); and Clint Eastwood’s A Perfect World (1993) all became box office hits and won critical acclaim. In 1994, Costner took the title role in Wyatt Earp, but soon experienced a difficult period in his career. Widely considered as commercial disappointments, the science fiction, post-apocalyptic epic Waterworld (1995) and The Postman (1997), received universally negative reviews. The Postman, for which Costner accepted both lead and directing roles, at the expense of taking the lead in Air Force One (1997), even received five Golden Raspberry Awards, including Worst Picture, and more personally, Worst Actor and Worst Director. Costner’s reputation sank to an all-time low, despite the mixed reviews that his subsequent project Message in a Bottle (1999) rceived, although this barely broke even at the box office.
“Failure doesn’t kill you... it increases your desire to make something happen.” Trying to get back on track, Costner decided to do another Western. Open Range (2003), which he directed and starred in, was no Dances With Wolves but received more positive feedback.
Upside of Anger (2004), Rumor Has It... (2005), The Guardian (2006) and his first psychological thriller, Mr. Brooks (2007) helped Costner to somehow rebound from the box-office failures. In 2010, he starred in The Company Men alongside Ben Affleck, Tommy Lee Jones and Chris Cooper, and was considered for the Quentin Tarantino film Django Unchained. Eventually, however, scheduling conflicts prevented him from participating in the project. Instead, he played Clark Kent’s adoptive dad in the Superman reboot Man of Steel (2013). The three-part miniseries Hatfields & McCoys (2012) earned Costner several awards, including the Golden Globe Award for Best Performance by an Actor in a Limited Series or a Motion Picture Made for Television.
Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit (2014), Molly’s Game (2018) and The Highwaymen (2019) are some of his latest movies. In 2019, he did his first voice-over in The Art of Racing in the Rain. Since 2018, Costner has been appearing in the television series Yellowstone. Costner married Christine Baumgartner in 2004 and has seven children. He enjoys singing in his country rock band Kevin Costner & Modern West. In 1995, Costner founded an educational center, Tatanka: The Story of the Bison, in Deadwood, South Dakota, where he also owns the Midnight Star Casino.

his university years in India, graduating with the top GPA at Agra University and decided to pursue his MBA. He accepted a $1,000 scholarship from UBC and left Madhu, Praveen and Peeyush in Modinagar to get his MBA going and set up the family’s new life in Canada. “At this time,” Praveen shared, ”my dad was really missing his family. He wanted us to be there with him and worked for hours as a busboy in the UBC cafeteria while doing his MBA to try and earn enough money to bring us over from India.” Eventually, Hari decided not to complete the program and left to pursue his Chartered Accountant designation. He began articling with Arthur Andersen as he knew he could make good money doing so and eventually, have the opportunity to bring his family to be with him. Two years later, Praveen was now five years old, he, his mother Madhu and brother Peeyush were finally able to move to Vancouver to join Hari for their new life. Shortly thereafter, Praveen’s sister, Vandana was born. “We grew up very modestly in East Vancouver,” shared Praveen, “I went to Killarney High School in my younger years and then as things got better with my dad’s work, we moved to the West Side and I ended up graduating from Magee High School”.

PRAVEEN VARSHNEY | FCPA, FCA | VARSHNEY CAPITAL
WELCOME BACK TO A NEW ISSUE AND A NEW YEAR! With hindsight literally being 2020, here’s to a 2021 filled with abundance in all areas of life for you and your family. To kick off a fresh season of Creating Impact, I am excited to share the story of another amazing entrepreneur whom I’ve had the pleasure of knowing for a number of years. He has a big heart and a deep focus on investing in growing companies that provide both a positive return for investors and the planet. Through embracing this ethos, he has proven that both “doing well” and “doing good” are not mutually exclusive. Praveen Varshney was born in October 1964 in Modinagar, a town in the state of Uttar Pradesh, India and was the first of three children of Hari and Madhu Varshney. Hari, Praveen’s father, was the main breadwinner for the family, working as a manager in a local factory. Two years after Praveen was born, his brother Peeyush came along and soon thereafter, Hari’s friend told him about the start of the MBA program being offered by only a few universities in the world, one of them being the University of British Columbia. Hari had done very well in

After graduating, Praveen decided to follow in his father’s footsteps, attending UBC. However, he was considering a very different path at that time, sharing that he originally wanted to become a teacher. “My parents strongly suggested I pursue other areas of study and so I decided to go into sciences which I loved, thinking I’d be an engineer. Well, it became quite the eye-opener. I failed physics and had a C+ average GPA. I knew I had to move on from sciences and thought I’d try business so I joined the Faculty of Commerce”. Praveen was loving the knowledge he was gaining and, just like his father Hari, decided to pursue the CA designation. “In the third year, I got a job at KPMG. I was learning all the different areas of accounting and was preparing for the UFE exam to get my CA. I literally failed every practice exam that I wrote but then, on the real exam where I needed 240 out of 400, I got 242 and passed!” (Despite barely passing his CA exam, Praveen would later go on to receive the FCPA, FCA (Fellow of Chartered Professional Accountants), the highest honour for CPAs in 2015, following in his father Hari’s footsteps). After graduating with his UBC BComm, Praveen began working full-time in audit at KPMG. Wanting to learn more, he decided to apply to work in the tax department but there were no spots available so it forced his hand to leave KPMG and explore other opportunities. “I had a couple of different gigs in accounting after
I left, working with a few groups and doing some consulting. Then I decided to join my dad and his partner, Raj Chowdhry at their practice. They were doing some cool things at the time and I felt it was a great fit”. At this point, Praveen was now around 25 years old and through family friends, got introduced to a lovely young woman named Anuja. Six days after they first met, they got engaged. “One of my first life goals was to be married by age 25,” shared Praveen, “I don’t know why, it just felt like the right timing in life to get married”. Around the same time, Praveen was about to learn one of his most-important lessons in business and investing. “I was 26 years old and my dad and Raj approached me with an investment opportunity they were working on. It was going to get split 40% for each of them and they offered me 20%. I told them I didn’t have the money so I couldn’t participate but they smiled and said they didn’t ask me if I had the money! The lesson here is to do your due diligence because if it’s a good enough opportunity, you can always find the money! So I did my due diligence and saw just how great it was. My Father and Raj ended up lending me the funds for the deal and when we cashed out, I paid them back. It was such a valuable lesson to learn. Don’t let not having capital be a reason why you don’t participate in an investment opportunity.” This would prove to be a cornerstone event that truly shape Praveen’s career and life. A year later, Pravenn was now 27, he got married and shortly thereafter, he, Hari and Raj formed a junior public company to explore the opportunity for diamonds on a property staked in The Northwest Territories. The company eventually merged into Mountain Province Diamonds and ended up discovering a large kimberlite pipe full of diamonds. They formed a joint venture with De Beers, called the Gahcho Kue Mine. It ended up becoming a multi-billion dollar venture with the stock going from $0.40 cents to a high of $9.00. The mine is still active today and in fact, at 157.4 carats, the largest “gem quality” diamond ever found in the mine was just discovered on December 17th, 2020. “This was my first deal,” Praveen shared with me. “I thought all deals would end up being like this, which of course they were not! With this one though, I had an immense feeling of pride. We created hundreds of jobs and created a lot of wealth for many people. The mining

town, the workers, First Nations - everyone benefited from it. This is what really stoked my fire for the model we still run today, called Public Venture Capital (PVC).” Following this venture and still at the tender age of 29, Praveen decided to take on a start-up in the casino business. “We worked with the First Nations bands in California to get a business called Thunderbird Casinos going. Using our PVC model, and with the strong financial results, the stock went from $0.25 to $6.00 a share. We also did the first ever listed convertible debenture in the history of the stock exchange. It had a 10% coupon and as the stock performed, the bond tripled in value. It was a fun industry to be in at that time.” It was now the mid 90’s and the internet was starting to really take off. Praveen shifted his focus and founded his third start-up, an Internet Service Provider (ISP) called Axion Internet. “Business was booming!”, Praveen explained ecstatically, “we were signing up over 1,000 clients a month and at the same time, things started shifting as more and more providers came online. Consolidation quickly began and I decided that we would become a consolidator instead of being consolidated! We started purchasing small ISPs and struck a deal to merge with a larger company called Look Communications at $3.00 a share. Look’s stock had a meteoric rise to $27 which we benefitted from but when the stock came back down, I didn’t want to ride that roller coaster so I killed the deal. I took Axion back and then we eventually sold to a large ISP called Uniserve.”
At this point, Praveen was 30, he had reached certain significant financial goals he had set for himself. “It is all about creating value for others. The M.O. is that you must ALWAYS treat other people’s money better than your own and through creating value and wealth for others, you know that as a big shareholder yourself, you’ll do just fine!” Fast forward to the new millennium. With a solid track record and a great reputation from their 10+ year run in starting and growing businesses, the Varshney family opened their family office in downtown Vancouver in 2000. “With Varshney Capital,” Praveen shared, “we wanted to manage our own money and be hands on investing in great entrepreneurs and lending our experience, expertise, wisdom and contacts to help their companies grow, thrive and exit”. This particular time in life is also when Praveen first got a taste of impact investing, defined as investments made into companies, organizations, and funds with the intention to generate a measurable, beneficial social or environmental impact alongside a financial return. “The first company we invested in was called Carmanah Technologies, a manufacturer of solar-powered LEDs” explained Praveen. “The founder, Dr. David Green, was incredible and working together, we helped take the company public and grow it to $75M in revenue in five years and so the stock was another ICONIC CONCIERGE

10X in return. Around the same time, our first child, my daughter Jaiya, whose name means “victory” in Hindi, was born. This was a somewhat serendipitous moment, having my first experience with impact investing at the same time I became a parent. It really put things in perspective for me and from that moment on, it has been a core focus of our investing: How can we make the planet better for future generations and use business as a tool to create the sustainable changes needed, without neglecting charity and philanthropy either?” Two years later, in 2002, Praveen and Anuja welcomed their second child, their son Aneesh. Praveen shared that Aneesh’s birth further engrained the focus on impact and at that time, he started to think about the future in the context of three main considerations: 1) Just because something is legal, doesn’t mean it’s good or right. 2) How do I leave things better when I “check out” than it was when I “checked in”? 3) What is my legacy? Will anyone show up at my funeral and what are people going to say about me at it? Around the same time, the Varshney family and the Feller family co-founded a company called MOGO (short for Money On the Go). They purchased the brick & mortar company Payroll Loans, sold off the physical side of the business and took it online. “Furthering the focus on impact,” Praveen explained, “we wanted to ensure that MOGO would educate consumers and increase their financial literacy to keep them out of the cycle of debt. We created an intuitive, user-friendly app and offered free credit scores so that people would know how to keep their credit strong and not get trapped by the big banks and credit card companies. Over the years, we’ve added more and more functionality and now you can even buy bitcoin with the MOGO app.” Mogo listed on the TSX in a $50M IPO in 2015. Fast forward to the present day. The
Varshney’s holdings are around 10% mining, 40% real estate and 50% impact investments. Their impact investing is done through two funds they co-founded, called Pyfera Capital and Humanitas Smart Planet Fund. In their social impact portfolio are companies like NEXE that create products from plant-based packaging like single serve coffee pods; Ronin8 that recycles e-waste; Little Kitchen Academy, a franchise to teach kids as young as three how to cook. Praveen is particularly excited about his new social housing real estate company called 3H Properties. In tandem with the impact investing focus today, Praveen shared his business and investing philosophy: “To do good business, with good people and make more money so we can do more philanthropy and help more people! Money is just a tool, don’t hoard it! Hold onto it gently, create a nice karmic loop, think of it like a river and let it flow…don’t dam the river! Be interested and be interesting! It’s amazing to see the people they’ve become. It was evident on a family trip a few years ago when Aneesh said to Jaiya, “Jaiya, I’ll tell you something. I’ll make all the money and then you can give it all away!”. This simple statement made us feel very proud”. Another “rocking chair” legacy achievement was Praveen receiving the 2020 Greater Vancouver Board of Trade Wendy McDonald Diversity Awards Outstanding Mentor award for his career of mentoring. In closing our candid conversation, I asked Praveen to share some words of wisdom as if he was talking to his younger self and as these responses always seem to do, his made me reflect on my own life. “Take time to discover what you’re passionate about AND what you’re good at. Focus on where those two intersect and double down on your strengths, forget trying to improve on your weaknesses! Remember, the universe has a grand design, let it play out. Say yes to a lot of things like meeting new people. You never know what might come out of a random interaction – that piece of advice or a contact could become your “luck”! LIVE LONG & PROSPER
by Dr. Oliver Finlay
It seems there is nothing like a global pandemic to bring people face to face with their mortality and question what impact their lifestyle is contributing to their health. In a year where many governments finally found the answer to how they can persuade their citizens to take more exercise (impose strict lockdowns and then sit back and watch as everyone suddenly wants to exercise outside for at least 2 hours a day) and the media opened the majority of news bulletins with headline statistics describing the status of each nation’s health, sickness, death or political trends, it’s been hard to escape the fact that life is fragile. Aging is the ubiquitous decline in physical function that happens over time in practically every species of living thing, with the rare possible exceptions such as hydra or jellyfish and some trees, such as gingkoes or bristlecone pines. However, whilst the idea of extending human life or even achieving immortality has been the stuff of legends from time immemorial, in recent years the science dedicated to understanding longevity has attracted significant resource and credibility. To this end, a celebrated community of scientists is emerging. They are harnessing scientific and technological advances in an attempt to understand the complex biological mechanisms of aging, with the hope of either slowing or even reversing the process. The shared goal of this group is to address the single greatest factor for heart disease, cancer, diabetes, dementia and many other forms of modern-day suffering: aging. Many aspects of the science relate to both the identification of genetic factors and understanding the essence of epigenetic modification (non-genetic influences on gene expression), which can inform us as to how lifestyle choices related to diet (composition, timing or volume),
exercise and our environment, can affect our own personal ageing journey. Whilst much of this research has concentrated on the effects of substances such as metformin, rapamycin, senolytics, acarbose, resveratrol, NMN and 17alpha-estradiol in studies on yeast cells, mice, fruit flies and a diverse range of other laboratory animals, there is little conclusive evidence to support their use as part of an anti-aging regime in humans. So, whilst we wait for these laboratory pioneers to make giant leaps for mankind by commencing human clinical trials, is there anything we can do to proactively fight aging whilst we wait? Well, it appears there is. There are a number of companies that are already providing critical screening services to help us understand how our bodies are programmed genetically and how aspects related to diet, exercise and environment, can influence these markers. Subsequently, we can begin to understand which choices to make when it comes to living a healthier life. DNAFit and 23andMe are two of the companies that are focused on identifying your genetic coding and how you are predisposed to certain traits, behaviours or disease states. Additionally, such tests are able to provide interesting information about your ancestry, which was an added bonus. This test is very easy and pain free. Once you register on their website, you are sent out a home testing kit, which requires you to simply provide a saliva sample in a collection tube and send it back to the laboratory. Several days later, your genetic code has been deciphered and you can download your results from your personalised account. continues page
THE MOST CELEBRATED NAMES IN THIS FIELD INCLUDE: Dr David Sinclair, a controversial Harvard Medical School professor of genetics, who has had countless discoveries published in some of the world’s most respected scientific journals, receiving numerous scientific prizes and honours in the process. His work has centred around the mechanism of aging and the family of proteins called sirtuins, that exist in all living beings, remaining dormant until activated through certain stressors, which Sinclair has shown to enhance health and extend life in yeast cells and mice. from University of Alabama at Birmingham and the Scientific Director of the American Federation for Aging Research, who has also received multiple awards for his work seeking to discover underlying causes of aging with a long-term goal of developing medical interventions that slow the age-related decay in human health. His work has investigated the DNA methylation clock which describes how small chemicals called methyls which attach to DNA, and affect which genes are switched on or off, which can give us information about our biological age. More recently, he has been involved in the early detection and analysis of a range of blood proteins that are now being detected and analysed that also give some indication as to biological age.
Dr Felipe Sierra, a geroscientist whose work has pushed for a better understanding of the ways in which the basic biology of aging is a major risk factor for age-related diseases such as cardiovascular disease, cancer, diabetes and Alzheimer’s. Dr S. Jay Olshansky, whose research to date includes work on estimates of the upper limits to human longevity, forecasts of the size, survival and age structure of the population, and the pursuit of the scientific means to slow aging in people. you to submit your 23andMe results to combine your genetic tests with your biomarker profile, which they state provides an additional layer of insight to inform the program. Whilst the analyses undertaken by both InsideTracker and Molecular You are intended to inform a personalised wellness program as opposed to providing medical care, results which stand out as warranting further investigation are reviewed by a physician. If indicated, clients are informed immediately and advised to seek medical consultation.
InsideTracker and Molecular You are two companies that take an epigenetic perspective and instead concentrate on identifying the biomarkers that identify the non-genetic factors that influence gene expression. As Molecular You CEO and Vancouver local Dr Rob Fraser explains, “whilst the genes provide the template, the proteins and metabolites are the actors that indicate what’s going on now and are even responsible for switching the genes on and off. As such, these biomarkers in the blood act as more accurate markers of health risk”. Fraser explains that by comparing the biomarkers found in a complete blood culture, with the findings of evidenced-based research, it is possible to act upon their findings by making informed changes to exercise, environmental or dietary aspects of one’s lifestyle in time to prevent the onset of disease.
I found these reports both extremely easy to interpret and the plans relatively easy to follow. What was particularly interesting was that whilst I would consider myself to have a healthy diet and follow a strict fitness regime, the results of my blood analysis suggested that there were significant changes I could make that would tailor my choices to my body, rather than making “best-guess choices” based upon blanket advice to the general population. Within a week, my shopping list had been overhauled at the grocery store and I made some slight changes to by training program. Whilst I noticed some slight improvements in my energy levels, I will be interested to see the differences in my biomarkers when I am tested again in 6 months’ time.
Fraser continues, “A disease state is not immediately initiated in response to a change in our environment, you see a time lag and sometimes this can be as long as 10-15 years. As a result, a blood analysis can identify the consequences of a status quo and guide actions that can be undertaken to prevent a likely future disease state such as cancer, diabetes, heart disease, kidney failure or the like”. He is particularly excited about the recent findings of their research which suggests that even conditions such as autism or Alzheimer’s can be prevented if the precursor states are identified early enough. The challenge that Molecular You has noticed is that, to date, seemingly healthy people haven’t been overly interested about their health and this only changes if they get sick. As such, they have been working with more progressive and holistic health care providers to combine care in patient populations. Additionally, they have attracted a number of corporate clients who are invested in the long-term health of their employees and see the benefit both from a productivity perspective, as well as a financial one. Meanwhile, pharmaceutical companies such as Roche are starting to show an interest in their work in an attempt to establish whether responses to medicines can be enhanced with a more widely encompassing approach to healthcare. Health insurance companies, however, seem to be more slow-moving and require more long-term data sets to inform changes in their policies. Given that the complete blood culture obviously requires blood samples being drawn, it is not as painless as the saliva-based DNA test, but this still isn’t a complicated process. InsideTracker arranges for a phlebotomist to visit you at home, whilst Molecular You work with local labs that you can visit to have your blood taken. As with the DNA tests, once your sample is taken, you are contacted several days later once the analysis has been completed. You then receive an in-depth review of your results and a personalised program which guides diet, supplementation, exercise, meditation, sleep and other choices you can make to help improve your biomarkers. Additionally, InsideTracker enables

Whilst the results from biometric and genetic tests will provide specific information related to your individual dietary and exercise requirements, there are some general guidelines that will improve everybody’s chances of living a long, healthy life. Here are three tips to include in your new year’s resolutions. EXERCISE
Inflammation is a normal response that the body uses to help
protect itself from harmful stimuli and, as such, plays a critical role in maintaining the body’s immune system and heart function to keep you healthy. It can occur in response to fighting bacteria, viruses or fungi and when the body is exposed to allergens, injury, over-training, stress or trauma. However, chronic inflammation has negative effects on the immune system and on aging. Regular exercise can reduce markers of inflammation by 20%60%, whilst resistance exercise has the added benefits of increasing lean body mass, metabolic rate and bone density. Aerobic exercise will also strengthen your heart and immune system, improve your mood, help manage your weight and prevent chronic disease such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease. As a result, incorporating both resistance training and cardiovascular exercise in your daily routines will have a positive effect on your longevity and quality of life.
fat levels whilst concurrently reducing inflammation. There is also support for the theory that intermittent fasting may directly protect DNA against oxidative damage, which is a major contributor to the aging process. Intermittent fasting can be conducted either by limiting eating to specific time windows in the day (time-restricted feeding), by fasting or reducing the number of calories consumed every other day or by adopting the 5:2 method, where fasting takes place two days a week, with normal eating patterns being retained on the remaining 5 days. As with any changes in diet, you should consult a doctor or dietitian before beginning intermittent fasting.
DIET
SLEEP
Whilst it is impossible to recommend specific dietary modifications to suit the great range of individual variations in the general population, there are some universal guidelines that are well supported by the scientific evidence. These include reducing refined sugar and alcohol intake, increasing the consumption of fresh fruit and vegetables and minimising the amount of processed food in the diet.
Poor sleep patterns have been shown to impair glucose metabolism, with sleep deprived individuals experiencing higher blood glucose spikes in response to food. These are related to impaired insulin responses. Additionally, sleep deprivation has been shown to negatively impact immune function, metabolism, cognitive performance and alertness.
Research shows that alcohol sales have increased by considerably since the start of the pandemic. This increase in alcohol consumption increases the risk of mental health disorders and chronic diseases including heart disease, liver disease and certain cancers. By abstaining from alcohol for a sustained period, such as taking part in Dry January, research has shown that sleep, energy and concentration levels can increase, blood pressure can fall, whilst glucose and cholesterol markers can improve. These can all have a positive impact on general well-being. Whilst the challenges of navigating peer pressure to drink are not insignificant, by choosing non-alcoholic beers and wines, sold by brands such as GrĂźvi, or ordering the mocktail option at the bar for a month, studies have shown that even 6 months later, as many as one third of people continue to drink less. Intermittent fasting has also seen an increase in popularity in recent times, with numerous studies illustrating its many benefits. These include improvements in brain function, memory, weight, insulin resistance, high blood pressure and circulating
Sleep is important for the body’s repair and restoration processes, as well as hormonal replenishment. Most people should aim for between 7-8 hours of sleep per night, whilst short afternoon naps of around 30 minutes have been linked to improved mental and physical performance. Sleep quality is also important and the avoidance of caffeine, intense exercise and screen exposure in the four hours before bed should contribute to improved sleep results. If your schedule makes it difficult to always get 7-8 hours sleep each night, research has shown that a catch-up sleep (a recovery night of at least 10 hours sleep in one spell), or banking sleep (increasing sleep times pre-emptively to offset the detrimental effects of upcoming sleep deprivation), can help mitigate the effects of reduced hours in bed.

HE CHALLENGES THAT THE PANDEMIC HAS PRESENTED to those intent on a healthy lifestyle have been numerous. The mental health threats inherent with working from home became more apparent as 2020 progressed, with cases of burnout, depression and divorce increasing. Meanwhile, whilst physical activity is scientifically recognised as being the natural antidote to managing one’s psychological wellbeing, the options for engaging in regular exercise diminished as fall made way for winter. As the nights drew in and the blue skies were infiltrated by rain clouds, iron-clad will-power and dedication to fitness became imperative for those seeking to maintain summer
After turning the spotlight on healthy home-working habits in the last edition, the ongoing disruption to social integration and access to leisure facilities raised the question, “just how can we best workout from home?” The initial answer, as is often the case, is “it depends”. As with creating any sustainable habit, it is important to identify a varied selection of activities that are enjoyable, because without the internal motivation, the external motivation will soon be exhausted when the novelty wears off. It is also important to do an environmental assessment and evaluate what one’s living arrangements will permit. 400 square feet downtown Vancouver apartments feel even more cramped with exercise bikes taking pride of place in the living room, whilst downstairs neighbours in timber-framed buildings aren’t renowned for their tolerance of high impact exercise sessions, or the dropping of weights in the apartment above. After conducting some thorough research, we’ve identified some fitness industry classics, shopping channel pretenders and the latest offerings from the tech world to highlight some of the best options on the market. We explain why each might just be the thing that keeps the winter comfort cushion under control and lays the foundations for the summer body.

OYO & NOVA HOME GYM |
www.oyofitness.com
It started with the SpiraFlex Resistance Exercise Device, invented by Paul Francis, which was used by over 50 NASA crew members to maintain bone and muscle in zero gravity during their 5 to 6 months on the International Space Station. Francis also helped developed the Bowflex Revolution home gym before founding OYO Fitness to incorporate the technology into fitness equipment that can be used for exercise at home, office, or on the go. We tested the updated OYO NOVA Gym, which provides up to 40lbs (18kg) of resistance in each hand in all planes of movement, yet only weights 2.5lbs (1.12Kg) and folds up. Simply add a FlexPack, each rated at 10lbs (4.5kg), and use the T-Handle grips with steel inserts to follow one of the more than 100 exercises. OYO even have 18 weeks of free programs and more than 50 exercise-videos online.
APPLE FITNESS+ |
www.apple.com/ca/apple-fitness-plus
Apple have built upon their fitness ring concept that measures activity (calories), standing duration (time) and exercise (time) throughout the day. Apple Fitness+ is the interactive service built around the Apple Watch and taps into this gamification approach by combining studio style workouts with the inspiration to close the activity rings. The heart rate metrics, calories burned, and comparative community intensity are all displayed on whichever screen you are working out in front of (TV, iPad or phone). The flexibility of the system enables you to train from home, the gym, your hotel room or even in your local park. The platform has strength, HIIT, core & yoga workouts which require minimal equipment, and there are additional options for those that have a rowing erg, treadmill or exercise bike at home. AI will learn from your routines and starts to suggest new workouts or trainers that match your preferences. “I liked the variety of work out sessions, both in terms of duration, exercises and playlists. Plus, the more I used it, the more I started to piece together multiple classes to build fun and comprehensive sessions of an hour or more in duration. As an athlete, because the service caters for a wide range of fitness levels, I did find some of the workouts a little on the light side but as Apple build out their library of classes and the AI develops its understanding of my preferences, I’m sure this experience will get more infrequent.”
CONCEPT 2 ROWER & SKI ERGOMETERS |
www.Concept2.com
Concept 2 began back in 1976 with the aim of selling composite racing oars and in 1981, founders Dick and Pete Dreissigacker created the Concept 2 Indoor Rower, which soon became the bestselling rowing machine in the world. The rowing ergs are now used daily by Olympic athletes, cardiac rehabilitation patients, individuals at homes or in gyms. In more recent years, the company has added the SkiErg and the BikeErg but have remained dedicated to providing high quality products and training programs direct to customers. Akin to gym-based group workout providers such as CrossFit or F45, Concept 2 release a workout of the day and was one of the first to create an online training community by connecting participants for individual or group training sessions and indoor racing events. Whilst the Concept 2 products may not appear as novel or flashy as some of the newer products on the market, class endures, and the products are renowned for their quality and are easily stored at home.
FUSION MOTION HOME GYM |

Promoted as an “all-in-one gym” that “has everything you need to build muscle and burn fat -- all from the comfort of your living room!”, this device with its attachments helps to get you in shape with pushups, work your core with the ab wheel and shred your arms and legs with thick heavy resistance bands. The kit comes with a squat rack, door anchor and different resistance pulleys which can be attached to the rack in several different ways, each time changing the resistance. The board itself can sustain an additional 100lbs of resistance on each side. A training guide offers 200 different exercises and the whole gym can be easily taken apart without tools and stored away.

MIRROR |
www.mirror.co
As the name suggests, the start-up acquired by Lululemon in the summer of 2020 for $500 million offers a mirror that transforms into an interactive home gym. When it’s turned off, it acts as a simple full-length mirror, however, when it’s on, users can engage in weekly live classes, on-demand workouts and one-on-one personal training sessions. As you’d expect from a company owned by Lululemon, yoga classes and cardio classes are a staple but unlike any of the other home training options, boxing classes are also an option along with over 40 other genres, with work out durations lasting from 5-60 minutes. As with Apple Fitness+, heart rate, calories and exercise intensity can be displayed on screen if Bluetooth is enabled, whilst AI tracks your results and uses the data to build a personalised program. Taking a leaf out of Zwift’s playbook, Mirror will soon also seek to tap into the community vibe. It intends to allow users to “faceoff” against each other in work outs, earning points for hitting in kick boxing sessions or maintaining heart rate zones, sending virtual high-fives to other members, enabling them to search and follow friends, as well as spotlighting members who hit milestones in workouts. “The only drawback? The Mirror is currently on sale in 18 stores in the USA, before rolling out to the rest of the country and Canada later in the year.”
TRX |
www.TRXtraining.com
TRX is a well-established name in the home fitness industry. Founded upon the principles of suspension training, TRX can be used to build strength and cardiovascular health whilst burning calories for fun. The TRX suspension training system is based on seven basic movements – the push, pull, plank, rotation, hinge, lunge and squat – which are all employed to provide a full body workout. Following on from the success of their initial suspension products, the company has expanded its range to include an array of functional training tools, in addition to a library of online conditioning, recovery, strength and yoga classes through its TRX On Demand service. The TRX suspension system is probably the most discrete of all the training devices we cover here and is easy to both store or transport, meaning it’s a go anywhere solution that can be used at home, in a hotel room and even at your local park or beach (or indeed anywhere that has a solid anchor point from which to attach it to).
For those that would normally rely on spin classes in the winter when the bike is put away at the end of the summer, this system allows subscribers to use their own bike and, with the addition of a smart trainer, their output is detected in realtime, allowing them to race against other users. Interaction is enabled and as a result the platform has created a very engaged online community. When the 2020 Tour de France was cancelled, Zwift partnered with the event organisers to create a virtual course that mirrored the official route, which allowed subscribers to ride the stages and some of the proriders even joined along the way. Zwift has been a huge hit with cyclists and triathletes, with groups even training together from the comfort of their own homes. The quality of the immersive experience means that you feel compelled to ride on even when your session is complete. For those that prefer running to cycling, the system also works with the use of a treadmill as opposed to a bike and trainer. Additionally, if you are working towards a specific goal or are in need of some guidance, Zwift have teamed up with Pkrs. ai which employs machine learning to provide personalised coaching.
PELOTON |
www.OnePeloton.com
Peloton is the industry darling with a well documented success story over the last 3 years. Arguably responsible for revolutionising the fitness industry, the company has proved that working out at home is a viable alternative to committing to a gym membership. Founded in 2012, Peloton combined talent in technology, hardware & production to chase the vision of recreating the community and fun of a boutique fitness experience at home. As with Zwift, Peloton’s core business model centres around biking & treadmill workouts. However, similar to Apple Fitness+, there are app-based classes for yoga, strength, HIIT workouts, meditation and outdoor running and stretching. Where Peloton and Zwift differ is that Peloton requires you to purchase their own brand exercise bike or treadmill, so the entry price-point is more significant. The monthly payments are also much higher than for Apple Fitness+ for the bike sessions although only slightly more expensive for the exclusively digital membership. “Peloton is renowned for its extensive content library and slick production quality. However, given the current delivery delays caused by increased demand during the pandemic, I was unable to try out the product to evaluate whether the higher price tag is justified. Apple Fitness+ and Zwift offer very professional and engaging experiences, with the former adding to its content library daily and the latter adding a more realistic experience for cycling and triathlon enthusiasts.” ICONIC CONCIERGE

10 THINGS ... EVERY GENTLEMAN MUST EXPERIENCE When we look back on our lives one day, we certainly want to be proud of what we have done, and we want to believe we really lived to the fullest. What does it mean to “live your life to the fullest?” The obvious list of experiencing true love, discovering our purpose, or raising a child is great, but the following is more specific, lighter, and perhaps a bit easier to complete! I would argue that there are a select few experiences that will definitely round off the list of things that, while they may not complete your life, they will at least make you a bit more interesting. Start checking these off your list as soon as possible: GET A SHAVE FROM A REAL BARBER – There is something both exhilarating and relaxing about a person holding a sharp razor against your neck, and for some reason you just feel connected to the essence of being a truly oldschool gentleman. DRIVE AN EXOTIC CAR – Not everyone will have an opportunity to purchase one of these member-extension devices, but it is an absolute must that at some point in your life you get behind the wheel. The feeling of getting pulled back in your seat while the engine screams can elicit an amazing visceral experience.

ABROAD
EDITION 4 - MONTE CARLO, MONACO AH... MONTE CARLO…where the Billionaire’s playground is smaller than NYC’s Central Park yet packed with places to channel your inner James Bond. Where residents have the highest life expectancy in the world, citizens are not allowed to gamble, no one pays income tax and there is one policeman per 100 residents. There is also 24 hour video surveillance almost everywhere making it one of the safest places on the planet. There is no airport, even private planes arrive in nearby Nice, take a helicopter instead.. one lands every 20 minutes during the season. A few musts for the gentleman abroad:
CASINO DE MONTE CARLO - Whilst the rest of Europe was banning gambling, this belle epoch palace was being erected… the Casino even saved this principality’s economy. Until recently, profits funded the government, now tourism and banking help; no one pays taxes. You won’t see Prince Albert, even the Royal Family is not allowed into the gaming rooms, but glam rules. Jackets & ties are a must after 8 but why not go all out and wear a tux! Bond always did. The largest win was over a million dollars by an unknown Italian gent playing www.montecarlosbm.com/en/casino-monaco/casino-monte-carlo roulette.
FORMULA ONE GRAND PRIX - An at least once in a lifetime sporting event, the Monaco race is the most glamourous of the Formula One circuit. It is also one of the oldest and most dangerous races. First held in 1929, the track is uniquely challenging. In order to qualify for the series, a race must be held entirely within one country. In such a small place, this results in a track which passes through a tunnel, narrows dramatically in spots and has very sharp turns. In 2021, the race weekend will be held from May 20 to May 23. Purchasing individual day tickets allows spectators watching the race from different vantage points. Whilst Grandstand B is renowned for providing an exciting atmosphere, viewing from a yacht raises the lux factor. www.formula1.com LA NOTE BLEUE - Their new water misting system makes sure you never get too hot so rent a lounger and umbrella for the day, sip rosé, have a nibble and enjoy the best located beach club in the city. Make sure to stay for the live jazz concerts Wednesday thru Sunday nights … pure magic! www.lanotebleue.mc

Expect live music, tons of atmosphere and the most amazing signature cocktails which change with the seasons. If it’s on the menu try The Divine Celebration cocktail, made with meringue, gin, limoncello, orange, grapefruit and lemon juice. It was created by Florian Pomaret to mark the 150th anniversary of the hotel, Princess Grace’s favorite venue. Rumour has it Prince Albert pops by for a drink now and then! www.montecarlosbm.com/en/bar-nightclub-monaco/the-bar-americain COLLECTION OF VOITURES ANCIENNE - Prince Rainier III began collection in the late 50’s, eventually overwhelming his garage space. By 1993 he decided to put the near 100 cars on display for the public, opening this specially designed 5 floor museum. Albert II shares his father’s passion and has refined his collection. The cars range from a De Dion Bouton to a 2013 Lotus F1 and include the Bugatti Type 35, driven by Willan Grover-Williams when he won the first Monaco Grand Prix in 1929. An axle addict’s dream. www.mtcc.mc/en
OPERA GARNIER DE MONTE CARLO - Opened in 1879, with a performance by Sarah Bernhardt dressed as a nymph, it has been a draw for opera’s greats ever since. Built to add a bit of culture to the community, this over-the-top ornate space with divine acoustics is a fairytale place to see a performance. If opera isn’t your thing, look for stars like Patti Smith, Jane Birkin & Lana del Rey or attend the annual Jazz Festival. www.montecarlosbm.com/en/shows-monaco/opera-garnier-monte-carlo

AGAINST THE GRAIN TWO VANCOUVER ENTREPRENEURS AND THEIR QUEST TO INNOVATE THE WAY WHISKY IS PRODUCED, TRADED & CONSUMED. AND YOU CAN BE PART OF IT.
HOW DID IT BEGIN? IT ALL STARTED ON A RAINY DAY IN VANCOUVER. Keith Trusler was just doing some research on some high-end, rare independent bottlings for a private event he would be hosting, when his friend Peter Kefalas, a local real estate and investment entrepreneur, joined him for a dram. “I remember that I showed Peter what I had found, and he said ‘why don’t we do this?’. And so we started digging.” They found a few non-Scottish companies but none based out of Canada. “We had another drink or two, did some brainstorming, and came up with “The Modern Whisky” as an independent bottling company.” A couple of years later, the company has been founded and a small team is currently purchasing casks of new make spirit to build an inventory.
WHAT DO YOU DO?
KEITH TRUSLER Co-Founder & Master Cask Steward
WHISKY HAS LOST RELEVANCE. WE WILL CHANGE THAT. As new consumer trends are emerging, there is a great thirst (pun intended) for an evolution of the category. The industry is showing early signs of disruption (at the production, financing and marketing levels) and we intend to capitalize on that opportunity. Our plan is to work with creative independent distillers, free-thinking investors, and bold industry forerunners to innovate the way whisky is traded, and consumed. Our brand will resonate with a younger generation. Growth in the whisky market is projected to come from 24 to 39-year-olds and includes a strong female consumer base. We will create an exclusive community of like-minded whisky enthusiasts to invest in the purchase of undervalued whisky assets. We will also conduct trades with retail brands, distillers and other investment groups to achieve solid returns for our shareholders, while, at the same time, create retail offerings to increase fund value and branding.
WHO DO YOU DO IT FOR? FOR PARTNERS. FOR DISTILLERS. FOR RETAILERS & CONSUMERS. First of all, Modern Whisky is an investment fund for whisky enthusiasts who will also learn more about promising young independent distillers, innovative distillation techniques, evolving market dynamics, trends and forecasts, and of course… frequent tasting and networking with like minds. Then there are younger, independent distillers who create unique and collectable small batches, representing rich fodder for the brand, which focuses on individuality and independence. The retailers find us attractive because we offer a unique range of products that come at high quality, and are highly marketable due to the marketing and the innovative nature of the curation. Finally, the consumers are looking for a whisky that is unique, characterful and distinctive with an interesting taste profile and curious backstory. We aren’t going to change the minds of the old boys club, they’re going to stick with Macallan. But the market is growing more in the 24 to 39 age group. Our future lies with these people.

“
We believe that whisky is something we can all enjoy and while we honour and respect the fine art and tradition of the industry, we strive to modernize it and make it relevant to a wider spectrum of people.
By rethinking whisky, we intend to start a movement, encouraging experimentation, creativity, expression and collaboration. This is not your grandfather’s dram. Modern Whisky is for the independent free thinker. People of character who challenge the norm.” CO-FOUNDER PETER KEFALAS & DIRECTOR PETER POULOS
HOW DO YOU DO IT? THE DYNAMICS OF THE MARKET CREATE OPPORTUNITIES. The limited partnership accepts funds from an exclusive group of whisky enthusiasts. It uses those funds to purchase whisky from small batch independent distillers (whose product is yet to be commercially appreciated), as well as more established distillers (whose product will be in an immature form) and warehoused under controlled conditions by each distillery. The product curation team selects different types of spirits, at different stages of maturity, from different distillers; in order to create an asset base that has potential in multiple classes. At the very least, the simple act of maturing the spirits provides a stable return on investment. We enhance the return rate by trading the assets with other entities as the dynamics of the market create opportunity. We also build a brand that positions our efforts favourably among the fastestgrowing customer segment, maximizing the disruption trend towards transparent and democratic brands.
HOW CAN I BE PART OF IT? ALTHOUGH WHISKY IS MADE TO BE ENJOYED BY THE MANY, THIS INVESTMENT IS ONLY FOR THE FEW. Whisky falls into a category of alternative investments. The value of whisky as an investment has risen significantly over the last decade, and although the inventory is liquid, the investment is not. There will be a number of rewards along the way, but just like maturing Whisky, it is an unhurried long term investment. The initial opportunity is only open to accredited investors and will be capped to 50 people. These founders can expect bespoke whisky experiences ranging from private tastings to distillery visits, annual bottlings of single casks exclusive to the founders, and collaboration opportunities for private label bottlings of Modern Whisky as the spirits mature.

CULINARY HIGHLIGHTS In our first column of 2021, we look back at some of the culinary highlights from last year. 2020 was the most difficult year we as a community have ever experienced, especially for the hospitality industry. During the first three months and ongoing, it continues to be a challenge for restaurants to survive the new environment. Everyone has had to make many adjustments to ensure the health and safety of customers as well as staff. Through it all, these dining establishments keep going, cautiously opening their doors to limited customers and to “Our City Tonight” TV. We are grateful that we can continue to showcase the talent of these superb chefs of Vancouver. Here is a look back at some of our memorable dining adventures during an incredibly stressful year gone by. OEB BREAKFAST CO OEB Breakfast Co (1137 Marinaside Cres, www.eatoeb.com) opened in 2019, and their concept was to take traditional and familiar brunch dishes then add a few creative touches to make a unique version (how about Canadian Lobster & Shrimp Crepe, or Perogies & Duck?). We enjoyed sneaking away from work for a late brunch which has included a delightful French Toast Trifle with Brioche, Meyer lemon curd, market berries, pistachios and torched pavlovas. ANCORA

SEASIDE PROVISIONS
Lunches are always about variety and whether we filmed spotlights or simply were looking for a break from the day, there were many wonderful options. Along the seawall in False Creek resides a great place known for its Peruvian-Japanese fusion: Ancora Waterfront Dining and Patio (1600 Howe Street, www.ancoradining.com). This is a lunch or late afternoon favourite for us and we like to order from the Nikkei Bar. Chef Sebastian makes a world class Ceviche Mixto with baby scallops, shrimp, squid, mussels, seaweed, and calamari. The menu has great selections anytime during the day or evening. On the other side of downtown you’ll find Coast Restaurant (www.glowbalgroup.com). Though they have a solid reputation among evening diners, some may not be aware of the superb lunch offered which is ideal to treat yourself to in the middle of a hectic work day. Chef Max Katsuno is the guy behind our lunch favourites: Mango California Roll with Dungeness crab & avocado & the “Friday Lunch Specials”, which often included the Sushi Special, with ahi tuna, mango, cucumber, avocado on rice. If you’re on the North Shore, a must visit is Seaside Provisions (125 Victory Ship Way, www.seasideprovisions.com). Located in The Seaside Hotel, this Lonsdale Quay-area/Shipyards District restaurant is a perfect spot for a post 3pm late lunch or “happy hour snack”. The menu is about “regional creations” with something for everyone in your group. For us, standouts include the Sablefish with prawn cake, cauliflower puree, broccolini, macro kelp and kabayaki butter as well as the Wild Rice & Quinoa Bowl with vegan coconut red curry, cauliflower, roasted sunchoke, cherry tomato, and some of the freshest, most delicious oysters in the Lower Mainland.

MOLTAQA
Post work, we enjoyed dining (and filming) at a number of great places including Hapa Izakaya (1193 Hamilton St, Yaletown, www.hapaizakaya. com). This cozy, energetic after 5pm spot has won awards for its creative take on Japanese cuisine (the Ebi Mayo with tempura prawns in a spicy mayo is a must). From Yaletown, take a leisurely walk over to the Science World/ Mount Pleasant area and you’ll find Bodega on Main (1014 Main Street, www.bodegaonmain. ca). This iconic restaurant with authentic tapas and Spanish wine will take you (virtually) to beautiful Spain. The menu offers a wide variety, but for us a favourite is the shared Paella Senyoret, a gentleman’s style paella with peeled and de-shelled seafood including lobster. For wonderful Moroccan cuisine, visit the colourful and delicious Moltaqa Moroccan Restaurant (51 West Hastings Street, in Gastown www.moltaqarestaurant.ca). TUTTO RESTAURANT & BAR

CIBO TRATTORIA
We wrapped up filming in 2020 at the recently opened Tutto Restaurant & Bar (901 Homer Street, www.tuttorestaurant. ca). “Try a little of everything” at this relaxed, but elegant new restaurant, and we loved the Spaghetti di Mare with squid ink pasta, an abundance of fresh seafood, roasted cherry tomatoes, lemon herb crumb plus the delicious Funghi e Tartufo pizza with roasted wild mushrooms, summer truffles, with taleggio. LEON BRIDGES In September we stopped by Cibo Trattoria in the Moda Hotel (900 Seymour Street, www.cibotrattoria.com). Nestled in a cozy room, perfect for the colder and drearier winter months, Cibo offers a wide selection of food and wine. Try the Maltagliati all’Amatriciana with guanciale, onion, San Marzano tomato, and pecorino.
We will continue to share this city’s culinary magic. Food, as always, provides a deep sense of comfort and is meant to be shared. Here’s to a happy and healthy 2021.

ARMANI /CASA TURNS 20 The Vancouver Showroom Celebrates with the Presentation of the New Collection “It has been exactly twenty years since, with the launch of the first Armani/Casa collection, I began to structure the project of a total lifestyle, extending my vision and aesthetics to interior decorating. Today, Armani/Casa has become an established design force and still represents now, as it did at the beginning, a stimulating opportunity, the place where research and experimenting give life to objects and environments that reflect my idea of design, luxurious and essential. Thus, unique, sophisticated atmospheres take shape from a taste for the most precious materials, enhanced by pure lines, exquisite craftsmanship and natural, harmonious colours.” -- Giorgio Armani
THERE IS A TASTE FOR DECORATING INTERIORS. It tells of a sense of beauty –contemporary yet deeply rooted– where every material, every object, every detail attests to an original fusion of creativity and expert craftsmanship. That taste engendered the Armani/Casa project, which celebrates its twentieth anniversary today. Originated from the curiosity of exploring new environments – emerged as early as in the 1980s with the Logo Lamp, which at the time became the hallmark of the entire line– and fed by the extraordinary ability to imagine subtle exchanges between different sensibilities and cultures, the project represents the practical extensions of the aesthetic ideal of Giorgio Armani beyond the confines of fashion. Every object is the result of a complex, painstaking process from research to design, from experimenting to the final production. In a close dialogue with the best Italian master craftsmen, which reveals a renewed interest in rediscovering processes used by small local manufacturers, every element of Armani/Casa –furniture, home accessories, wall and floor coverings and textiles– tells a story.
